my aunt used to be a beauty pageant kid. had long, beautiful red hair with a curl pattern that made hairdressers jealous. her mother would pay people lots of money to spend hours styling my aunt's hair

predictably, as a young adult, my aunt cut all of her hair off. buzzed down to the scalp. she still keeps it pretty short- long enough for curls to develop, but only on the top of her head. she says she can't stand the feeling of her hair touching her ears or neck.

recently she's started collecting and styling wigs. she'll even wear them, occasionally, to a fancy event or if she just doesn't want to be bothered by distant family when she goes shopping. and she spends hours styling these wigs, even though she doesn't use them all that often.

i asked her about it. she said that sometimes, growth looks a lot like regression with a twist. that she's reclaiming something she enjoyed as a kid, and could have enjoyed more. she said she's practicing having agency, and that it's a skill that doesn't come very naturally for her. having agency, i mean. she's really good at styling wigs.

can you believe that we have fanfiction. that we have websites dedicated to fanfiction. that there is a place that you can go and read tens, hundreds, thousands and thousands of pieces of writing that strangers have made. people who are not "writers". people who come home at the end of the day and have feelings and say, i am going to put that into words. i am going to share those words. short, long, sweet, sad, horny, funny, wonderful words. we are all just human and we all love to make and remake and share that with others. can you believe that.

People who don't hyperfixate will never know the slightly horrible, completely impossible-to-replicate feeling of being so intensely invested in something it possesses you, takes over your waking thoughts and rides some weird line between being excited, anxious, and stressed as hell while still being entirely some other beast.

Karim vs. Ezran: Who's the Better King?

Even though those two had only a certain amount of screen time, you could tell who's the better king. While Karim isn't a king yet, you can tell how bad of a leader he is. He immediately disrespects Ezran and barely listens what he had to say. He kept looking down on him not only because he's a human, but also a kid to boot. Even before that, he never asked himself on why a soldier would be loyal to him. Let alone start asking questions. He just went with what one soldier said and just rolled with it. Believing it could win his title back. It's abundantly clear that he was just as arrogant as his eldest sister.

Ezran on the other hand, he wanted to avoid repeating past mistakes. He actually thinks things through before he gets too reckless. While he still has a council of people around him, he doesn't let them completely influence his decisions. He takes everything to consideration and does what he believes is best for his people. He may be young, but he actually does a way better job of being a king more than people give credit for.
