I love Andrew Minyard as a criminal justice major. Just imagine the possibilities that could happen!! He'd 100% write a paper about nature vs nurture that is about himself and Neil (only if you read between the lines can you tell that tho)
Oh man!! An idea is coming into my head as I think about this!!
Okay, okay, so imagine the following.
Andrew is in his The Serial Killer's Psyche class when he learns about the more recent recent killers, including The Baltimore Butcher.
He lowkey becomes fascinated with the whole thing.
(It's the knives)
And goes down a rabbit hole looking into anything and everything regarding the Wesninski family.
He learns that Nathan was married and had a son, Nathaniel, with a member of another known mafia family from across the Atlantic, Mary.
The son would be the perfect killing machine for these two.
But then he learns that Mary and Nathaniel died tragically in an unknown form.
"The family wants to keep their privacy in these hard times." The press says.
Despite Andrew researching for days (he even went to the library once!) He can't find any record of how they died, but their death certificates have the same time stamp on them so at least he knows they died at the same time.
After finding out as much as he can about the family, he is (and he would never admit this to anyone at all ever) solely on the side of the cops in believing that Nathan Wesninski is The Baltimore Butcher despite there not being enough evidence, etc etc.
Having learned all he could, he all but forgets about the Wesninski family.
Fast forward to the next semester when Kevin tells him they are going to Arizona because he found them a new striker.
As Neil is trying to catch his breath from Andrew hitting him, Andrew is suddenly excepiencing a new phenomenon to him "familiarity"
For some reason, this flight risk reminds him of someone, but he can't quite remember who.
This is new.
Not remembering something.
Is his memory failing him for the first time ever?
He blames it on his meds and moves on
Everytime he sees Neil after he moves to Palmetto, he has the same feeling.
Ever. Single. Time.
It is increasingly aggravating and intirely too intresting.
After weeks spent trying to remember who Neil reminded him of, filing through every person he's ever encountered, and Neil's skitish behavior, he decided that Neil must be a threat.
Why else would his instincts tell him not to trust Neil?
Why didn't he react to the Moriyamas coming south that fall?
Why couldn't he fucking remember where he knew Neil from???
His shell cracked a little bit and he decided on impulse that Neil was going to Eden's with them
Andrew was practically vibrating with rage by the end of that night.
"Who are you?" Andrew asked.
"Wha- I don't understand? I'm Neil?"
"No. I know you, but I've never seen you before." Andrew watched as Neil tensed, wondering what was running through the runners head.
"We don't know each other." Neil made as if to walk away, but he didn't make it far before he had to grab the wall to stabilize himself.
"I know you." Andrew said, grabbing his shoulder.
"No, you don't." Neil shoved him.
"Do you work for the Moriyamas?"
"You think I'm a mole?" Neil scoffed, but it was more slurred with the drugs in his system.
"You're something. And I know how to properly dispose of a body." Andrew said lowly, threatingly, putting both hands on either side of Neil, caging him him.
"So do I." Neil's voice was steady, and he shoved Andrew back as far as he could before taking off.
Neil feeds Andrew half-truths the next day at Wymacks, saying that he must have seen him on the street somewhere. He honestly had no idea why Andrew recognized him.
Andrew doesn't believe that, but he believes Neil's half-truths about his family and lets him go.
Eventually, the familiar feeling is exchanged with actual recognition, and the books continue on as normal
UNTIL
Andrew gets out of Easthaven and sees Neil with his blue eyes and Aubrun hair and brused face, and Andrew freezes for only a moment.
But for that moment, it's like a Christmas tree lighting up in Andrew's head.
Neurons firing and connecting dots he didn't know went to together.
Nathaniel Wesninski stood next to his family
Nathaniel Wesninski protected his family while he was in rehab
Nathaniel Wesninski has been alone with Kevin every night for the past 4 months
Nathaniel Wesninksi was a runaway
Nathaniel Wesninski was alive
Nathaniel Wesninski
Andrew doesn't know what to do with this information yet, so he does nothing
He goes about his decided itinerary for the day
He still doesn't know what to do until "I never understood why he liked knives."
Everyone else was thinking Riko, but Andrew was thinking Nathan.
He decides then and there that he's not going to say anything until Neil tells him.
Neil's "I'm Nathaniel" hits Andrew like a gut punch.
He already knew it but now it's confirmed.
When Neil goes missing, Andrew was the first to tell coach about Nathan's release from prison.
He persuades Coach (read: stares down repeating "Baltimore") to take them to Baltimore because that's where Neil is.
Books go on as normal
Life seemingly goes back to normal after summer break.
They start the new semester with significantly fewer worries, and Neil is figuring out his newfound freedom.
Andrew is in his Advanced Psychology class when Nathan Wesninski is brought up again.
The professor - fortunately for her sake - doesn't mention Neil or Nathaniel at all but assigned them an imaginative assignment
They are to pick a serial killer and study what is known about their at home life and write a paper about what it might be like to grow up in that kind of enviroment
Andrew was going to ignore this assignment, but Neil found out and thought the whole thing was hilarious.
Neil finds out that Andrew was entirely too fascinated by the Wesninski family.
"You liked me before you even met me."
Eventually, they decided that Andrew didn't have to write the paper.
"Mr. Minyard. It is your turn to present."
Andrew and Neil walk to the front.
"This was a single person assignment, Mr. Minyard."
"I think a first-hand account is better than anything I could have come up with. Don't you think?"
"First hand?"
"Hello Andrew's classmates. I'm Nathaniel Wesninski, but please call me Neil. Fair warning. If you ever call me Nathaniel, I will kill you."
They spend the rest of the class basically ragging on Nathan the entire time

i'm a sucker for amputee neil, especially when he has a service dog, and double especially when uncle stuart becomes dad!stuart. this fic is just amazing, and though there are many chapters it isn't that long and is an easy but very moving read. i love it! go check it out! I just find it kind of hard to believe that Andrew Minyard majored in criminal justice. Like I get that he was medicated and wanted something funny, but I think going into criminal justice would be too expected and he wouldn't want people to think that he's doing it to try and save others like he didn't get saved or whatever.
But I do agree he would pick something funny or for shock factor. My guess is he would pick philosophy.
1. I imagine that he tried to pick the major that would be the least worthwhile. Medicated Andrew would absolutely just want to waste people's time.
2. Aaron would hate it, which would make Andrew all that much more committed. Aaron, who is relentlessly dedicated to the pre med track, would be pissed that he's picking something so "useless". Even Nicky chose a major that might benefit him and he never even planned on going to college.
3. I actually think Andrew wouldn't hate it. He would always have an excuse to pick a fight with people in class for the sake of "moral discussion" or whatever. His eidetic memory would come in handy for memorizing different texts so he would be great at proving egotistical, rich boys wrong by pointing out their hypocrisies. Plus, he wouldn't have to take anything above the most basic science or math credits and most of his homework would be reading.
4. Kevin-history major-Day would want to talk to him about his classes so, so badly. Andrew would absolutely get a kick out of denying him that.

I believe that even with all the overwhelming Andrew Minyard content, we can never give the love this precious soul deserves.
Andrew Joseph Minyard deserves all the love in this universe.
He is very loyal.
Like, because he was often left behind most of the times in his past, it’s kind of ironic how Andrew understands the concept of family.
How willing he is to fight for his family, keep his family- even if it doesn’t show in the most obvious ways.
Friendly reminder that Andrew Minyard strike deals with people because he thinks it’s the only way to make people stay.
Friendly reminder that he is willing to go through hell and back for his family to the point of even hurting himself.
Because he could give less shit if he gets hurt. This MF is willing to go all in in protecting “his” people even if it kills him because he just don’t see anything worth living his life all the while secretly doing the best he could because he wants his family to succeed and that’s just-
Isn’t it ironic that everything Andrew Minyard are for are also the same things that ended up hurting him?
Like this kid honors promises to a fault and ensures hope when necessary (eg Kevin and Neil) when his life consisted nothing of false hopes and broken promises.
Did you know that the second character in the book to say the word fine the most is Andrew? While Neil says fine as a defense mechanism, Andrew mostly says the word to assure others that they’re going to be okay when they’re overthinking.
He also really values consent and that first kiss with Neil, when he pushed him and said he wasn’t in the head space to give it? That scene is underrated af.
Also, for someone who got lied to all his life, Andrew is so honest. He tells the truth in all its ugly glory because better terrible truths than kind lies.
Honesty suited Andrew because he was an instigator at heart and his opinions were often unpopular.
Andrew Minyard is not a good person- doesn’t try to convince someone he’s a good person.
He threatens people, he can kill without a second thought. I think this is why most people view him as “psychotic” but if you do read the times Andrew act out on violence, they’re mostly because they’re provoked by inappropriate behavior slash words.
Like with Nicky, and the things he says about Neil and Kevin. I really like that Andrew acts on that because as violent as it is and as much as I love Nicky, he tends to oversexualize someone and say unnecessary and inappropriate things.
I love how Andrew doesn’t act like he likes people. Doesn’t feel inclined to make someone comfortable. 
And honestly, who can blame him when most of the foxes see him as a monster? Like I love the foxes but they’re judgmental assholes.
I really hate this about the books, like I can defend why the upperclassmen and even his own family sees him as such but it just gets to me.
Because for me, out of all the people there is in the world, the foxes should’ve been the first people to understand that Andrew was human with real feelings- that he didn’t have to act on a certain way.
I will never get over about how until the end of the book, the rest of the foxes still sees him that way.
As someone who went thru a lot of shit, Andrew was such a comfort character. Personally, I feel like his character arc was one of the best ones I’ve read.
He’s coping, still coping- and that’s okay.
Y’know what I love about Andrew most? He actively goes to therapy. In a way, despite seemingly giving up on everything, kid is willing to fix himself.
And maybe the results are slow or next to none but so what? He doesn’t have to recover immediately and honestly, reading AFTG back in a time when I was pressuring myself to heal fast because I was too frustrated with everything- reading Andrew was like getting washed by a cold bucket of water.
Recovery takes time. Healing is a process. And it could even take years and no matter how long it takes, it’s okay ✨
Also, another thing I like about Andrew’s character was that Nora made a point about not forgiving abusers. Most books tend to send that message (which is disgusting) but with Andrew’s character, it’s clear that you don’t have to attach yourself to your abusers.
Forgiving abusers is not a necessary part of the healing process. 
 This is getting dark so to lighten things up a bit, Andrew has a sweet tooth. He loves ice cream.
Also, he majored in criminal justice and I know Nora said he did that just to be a troll but I like to believe that deep inside, he wants to help those who are in a situation like him and actually make the world a better place.
Andrew knows what to do when someone’s breaking down. Like, with every character, his apathy aside, he always knows how to act.
Also, he’s one of those annoying even-if-I-don’t-make-an-effort-I’m-talented-af-and-can-still-perform-well-so-sue-me assholes and normally I hate those type of characters but Andrew was an exemption. 
Like, we do not talk enough about the fact that he asked Wymack to choose between numbers 1 - 5 and only let that number of goals in of the opposing team that night before shutting down the goal completely.
Or that he only let 13 of the ravens’ shots - the nation’s best team - in and that is oh my gods where do I even begin with Andrew Joseph Minyard being a superior goalie I cannot-
Also the fact that Andrew completely shut down the goal when Neil freaking asked him to- who is this man? 
What a simp. What power. 
I hope in the AFTG universe, someone out there is doing the god’s work and compiling his saves. Like, I don’t normally watch sports stuff cuz I hate sports but I would pay good money to see that yes sir I will.
We could talk about Andrew’s saves more but that just deserves its own post cuz it’s chef kisses
We do not talk enough about Andrew’s eidetic memory. Seriously, we don’t.
Also, you can say all you want that he’s an emo kid but kid has good fashion sense.
Andrew seriously has the best lines in the series. Did some of them made me choke and wheeze and cringe? Yes. But did most of them make me cry like a bitch and hit my heart right where it hurts? Also yes.
“Congratulations are in order, I suppose! Since I have none to give, I will tell the others to respond appropriately.”
Also, some of them were lowkey Shakespearean and I refuse to believe that Andrew doesn’t read Shakespeare-
Seriously, he’s so extra but he’s also so traumatized and such a gay disaster I can’t-
He’s five foot short.

Andrew ‘criminal justice major’ Minyard is so good at picking apart arguments that he has with his teammates and when they tell him that he can’t do something he’s like ‘Well actually…’ and goes on a tangent on how and why he can legally do the thing he is about to do leaving his teammates speechless and with the regret of starting on him when they should know better.

Ok now I've been thinking about it and I really actually prefer the idea of andrew not going into exy professionally.
It's what neil and Kevin love and he plays it because he's good at it and it get his family through college. Of all things that he doesn't care about, he doesn't care about exy either. And I kind of like the idea that as he heals and learns to find his own passions and interests and desires, exy isn't necessarily included in that. He doesn't need to love it just because the people around him do.
And like I dont think there's anything WRONG with him deciding he likes exy and wants to keep doing it. But I like picturing a scenario where he seeks out and finds and chooses a passion or career of his own instead of just learning to care about what he's fallen into. I like imagining him healing and growing to a point where he can look at the world around him and seek out his own interests and drives without anyone else's influence.
Idk professional exy player andrew minyard just doesn't do it for me the same.
So like some things I could see him getting into:
Writing: with how carefully he picks the words he does say (as few as they are) and with the pop culture and classic lit references he makes, I can imagine him actually getting really into reading and writing. @gahhhastly and I were talking last night about him and we decided it would make sense for him to be like... a selectively avid reader. Specifically, he'll go out of his way to read books that have been banned and stuff like that. But anyway I can definitely see him maybe learning to express himself in a journal or in letters in a way he can't or doesn't want to out loud. And I feel like he'd find that he has some incredible stories to tell.
Music: Maybe I just listen to too much music and make too many playlists and love the idea of band aus too much, but I kind of like the idea of Andrew getting into music. Maybe one day he decides to pick up guitar. Or maybe he learns he naturally has a decent singing voice and so he decides to work at that and cultivate that skill. Or maybe he writes shit down and realizes he likes finding melodies to go along to his lyrics. Maybe he just plays some instruments and decides to commit to it. Idk I can just picture it really well. I like the idea of him getting involved in something that definitely clearly requires passion to achieve, but still maintaining himself as a person and just... sliding that quiet passion into his life in the form of skill building and commitment.
Criminal justice: this one is harder to picture tbqh mainly just because I personally don't have any idea what types of things go into being a lawyer (he definitely wouldn't take the cop route lmao). And ik I personally don't like when people write him as a social worker because it is always glaringly obvious how little they clearly actually know about the profession and what it entails. But like I can imagine him initially going into that major because he's a petty little shit, and then maybe finding that he actually finds it very interesting.
Activism and community assistance: I can see Andrew just saying fuck it and working to do some social justice work, or work with non profits, or charities or what have you. Like maybe less on the person side of things and more on the system side of things. More concrete work with less involvement with cases, but still working towards goals that he personally cares about. I also just love the image of him and Renee doing habitat for humanity together or something. Like can you imagine scary antagonistic andrew minyard showing up to build houses or help run a soup kitchen or something alongside Literal Angel Renee Walker? Good image
I feel like there are so many other possibilities. This is just what came to mind immediately. Let andrew minyard find career interests outside of exy 2k21

I love how ass-backwards our understanding of Neil is, like literally the first paragraph of the book we get the whole mom-died-in-a-car-fire traumatic backstory but we don't get basic shit like his hair colour or even his NAME until the second book??? Go king give us nothing

what if the foxes looked at neil's obviously fake name/ID, his avoidance of doctors/hospitals/cops, his refusal to talk abt his background or his family, his "french mom," his shifting accent/sporadically british vocabulary & his three languages and decided that he was clearly an undocumented immigrant that needed to be protected at all costs
matt makes it about three months before quietly offering to marry neil to help with his "situation." neil has never been so confused in his life.
