TMNT 2012: Monster AU
Remember that 2012 Halloween toy line where the Turtles were monsters? So I made a little AU based around that where the Turtles and all their friends are monsters or something else...
Tumblr media
Leonardo - Mummy, was a royal that was given new life thanks to the Egyptian gods. Often bickers with Raph over who’s the superior royal (Leo’s actual royalty, Raph just claims he is causs ego)
Raphael - Vampire, calls himself the Prince of Darkness. Massive ego. He’s in love with the vampire slayer who’s hunting him down and wants to drink her blood to make her his vampire queen.
Donatello - Frankenstein’s Monster, created by Casey and very intelligent despite just been created and given life. Struggles to speak. Has a special connection and bond with April who uses to her powers to mentally communicate with him so she can hear him speak fully.
Michelangelo - Werewolf, his wolf transformation only comes out at a full moon so he’s his regular self the rest of the time but people think he’s more fun when transformed
April - Basically Carrie minus the abusive parent. Her father worries for her and her powers losing control and hurting those she loves, she feels like a freak but then she meets the Turtles and feels at home and slowly learns to control her powers.
Casey - Dr Frankenstein. A mediocre scientist, he created Donnie to prove he’s the best but turns out his creation is smarter than him and he hates it.
Karai - Gorgon (basically Medusa) and yes she can turn peoples into stone if you look into her eyes. Often wears shades or a blind fold to avoid eye contact.
Splinter - Ghost, a wise spirit who’s haunts the Turtles and friends.
Shinigami - Witch (shocker), usually everyone ago to for spells to solve their problems (Ex: Raph once went to her to make him a love potion, and once Slash asked her to help cure his “condition”), but she just messes with them and makes spells that just make their situation even worse.
Mona Lisa - Vampire Hunter. A Van Helsing and is hunting Raph down. Refuses to fall for his tactics and tricks (no matter how charming he is!)
Leatherhead - A sea monster like creature (like the creature of the black lagoon). Was an outsider and loner, bad social skills, but then met and befriended Mikey. He’s slowly opening up more and more when with him.
Slash - Something similar to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, he’s got two personalities that clash (Spike and Slash), he hates it and wishes to be freed from this “cruse”.
Renet - Average human, she’s dating Mikey and he desperately tries to hide the fact he’s a werewolf from her. She already knows.

📍Tourlida,Mesolongi Greece 🇬🇷
The lagoon of Mesolongi is considered the largest in our country and in essence it is a coastal lake - washed by the sea from the alluvium of the Acheloos river. The depth of the water on the coasts is ideal for the creation of salt flats and thus huge quantities of excellent quality salt are produced, while several fish farms operate with the particularly famous Messolonghi roe.
The lagoon and its ecosystem is protected by the well-known RAMSAR Convention and is also an environmental park. What is worth visiting by car, on foot or by bike is Tourlida.
It is a small inhabited island in the Gulf of Patraikos which is about five kilometers from the center of the city of Messolonghi. There is also the so-called "Black Salt" in contrast to "White", due to the lower quality of salt produced.
It got its name from a species of seabirds that existed there, the "turlids". It was an island until 1885, until that year a road was built by filling up the sea, while for the construction of the road the materials from the excavations made for the construction of the port were used.
In Tourlida you will also see the famous pelades, the traditional houses built in the water, which were originally built as homes for local fishermen. It is said that in recent years they have lost their romantic image and are now mainly used as holiday homes. Although it seemed to us an image of decline and abandonment, nevertheless this settlement still fascinates the visitor.

Sewer Monsters in Love
Sewer Monsters in Love, 21185Lalande, 2021
The "three kobolds in a trenchcoat" joke is pretty familiar these days, but fewer people remember Benjamin Grimm using the same flimsy disguise. This is a shame, because it's a much better fit for the premise of Sewer Monsters in Love (SMiL).
You, as the title says, are a sewer monster. You are in love with someone who lives Above, and you dream of even just being able to tell them. In order to live your dream, you are wearing a trenchcoat and a fedora (no, not a trilby, a fedora) and leaving your peaceful home to learn how to live amongst the humans.
And when they say "sewer monster", they mean something less Creature from the Black Lagoon and more Dianoga or Shambling Mound.
The game's weak point is character creation. There are five defaults (Man-Thing, Dianoga, Worm that Walks, King Rat, semi-anthropomorphic albino alligator) and you're told "make it up from there." The system is simple in the "gets out of your way" manner that I generally don't care for, but which is at least not broken. 2d10 + two stats + one skill + dice for bonuses, everything's an opposed roll, there's one "toughness" pool that is both your hit points and your emotional fortitude. When your toughness goes to zero, you slink back into the sewers for the night.
The art is not just the strong point, it's the centerpiece. The game is done in the style of a graphic novel, with the rules as text pages sandwiched between a comic of the monsters doing their thing, which is interspersed with a comic of people playing the game. It's done well. I've read enough awful examples of play to be genuinely surprised at how well SMiL is written. The art is in two different styles, but by a single artist. Their work is reminiscent of Joe Kubert for the monsters, and Fiona Staples for the framing story.
This game helped remind me that itch.io is not just a madhouse of ten million one-pagers, it also has some amazing work by some very dedicated people. 21185Lalande, in addition to being a red dwarf 8.3 light years away from us, is just the writer/publisher. The rest of the team is the artist, 411Gliese (same star), and main playtest GM HD95735 (again, same star). Lord I wish I had a playtest GM for my own game design.

Do you have book or author recs? Thank you! ☺️
I’m afraid I haven’t kept up with my reading in the past few years. Last thing I read was “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jeanette McCurdy (so good holy shit” but I think everyone knows that book by now. So I am going to rec some of my favorite and comfort books.
Tumblr media
This is my favorite book of all time. I absolutely love the way Peter S. Beagle writes. If you love the movie, the book makes the movie so much better. The graphic novel is also a favorite, it’s gorgeous.
Tumblr media
I can remember reading Allie Brosh online eons ago. Her first book has the best depiction of depression I’ve ever seen. And the second book in particular means the world to me. I got it a year after my brother’s passing and her talking about her grief over her sister’s death helped me understand my grief and pain. They’re equal parts hilarious and gutting. Absolute favorites that I reread every year if I can.
Tumblr media
Anything Carrie Fisher. Just like Allie Brosh she’s equal parts hilarious and gutting. I read this book when I found it at the thrift store I worked at and it’s stayed with me through three moves and more. Read all her stuff, she’s brilliant and I miss her constantly.
Tumblr media
This was one of the books my mom had on the shelf she told me not to look at. I constantly looked at it. The artwork in it spoke to me and stuck with me all through my adolescence. There’s a piece of art that I believe is part of my monster fucker origin. But the story is nice and short and it’s really fun.
Tumblr media
As a child my mom put on the universal monster movies between Disney viewings to save her sanity. Creature from the Black Lagoon was a marvel to me. The underwater scenes were my favorite. So this book and the creation of the character was the perfect read for me. Millicent Patrick is one of the coolest people to ever exist.
Tumblr media
Two of my favorite Beauty and the Beast retellings I think Robin McKinley is pretty much on everyone’s list. Beast is a really fascinating retell from the Beast’s pov, and it still strikes me to this day. (Don’t tell anyone but I stole the Beast book from my high school back in the day).
Tumblr media
When I turned 18 these were the books mom bought me for my birthday. Granted, this was also the woman who let me read Interview With a Vampire way too young so I dunno why she thought this would be such a shocking gift. Anyways, these books really introduced me to erotic writing and are probably the reason I’m even here today.
Tumblr media
Shout out to @monster-bait this book is so much fun and the characters are enchanting. I really want to get her new book but I’ve been broke and I love having physical copies. (Also I haven’t been reading lately and I’d feel bad if the book just sat there).
I’d love to have suggestions and if any of you have books out there you’ve published you’d like me to read please let me know! I’d love to support my fellow writers here before I buy anything else.

oooo can you give us a little info on the essay? sounds really interesting
Ok so the place is called Silver Springs, and it is perhaps the biggest artisanal spring in the world. People have been using the springs since the early Pleistocene, but tourist activity started in the late 1800’s when glass bottom boat tours got started. This escalated into making it the premier spot for Floridian tourism from like 1910-1970, when Disney changed tourism and how Florida was viewed by the US public as a whole. During it reign as king of tourism, Silver Springs had so many weird shenanigans such as invasive herpes monkeys, the creation of a specialized park for black US Americans, and the filming of several movies, including creature from the black lagoon.
Here’s my favorite source I used in the paper I wrote.

The other day, on a Universal Monsters page, I was surprised to see LOTS of comments whining about the new monster animatronics for Universal Studios Epic Universe Monster expansion (opening later this year.)
Mostly they were upset that the classic monsters didn't look like their 30s counterparts. I thought they did a good job of reinventing them while paying homage to the originals. Frankenstein's monster still has that (to me) annoying flat head (which is NOT in the novel!) and the face is definitely Karloff.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon looks almost identical to his movie version except with sharp teeth added. And then you get the whining"Gill Man doesn't have teeth!" So? It's a slight change and it works because there are fish with teeth like that.
One person even said the Frankenstein monster looks like he's wearing Goth Rock pants. (Because they're ripped up). That's not even supposed to be the original monster. It's Victoria Frankenstein's creation.
The Wolfman is the 2010 version, which was an Oscar winning practical effect until studio meddling replaced it mostly with CG, the practical version won the movie an Oscar. But the CG replacement insulted Rick Baker so badly that he retired. That was Rick Baker effects. (An American werewolf in London, Thriller...) He's iconic.
And I admit it, the 2010 Wolfman does look better than the original. And I'm glad it's not the 2025 Wolfman (that so far, doesn't look good at all...)
Dracula is a completely new redesign but we barely see him and I don't think he looks bad at all.
And the invisible man is perfect! :-P
I think the people complaining are too invested in their own Nostalgia. They don't consider that sometimes change is good.
They say these look awful but don't consider that we could be subjected to bad Disney-style back-lit projected faces (that no one likes!)
These are gorgeous. They look like real entities. And they have very fast, and very fluid movements.
It's weird when you see "Fans" of Universal monsters dismissing a new incarnation out-of-hand rather than appreciate that there is a new incarnation.
They couldn't possibly make them exactly like the 1930s monsters. Yes, they have the rights to them but some of the effects are really dated. i.e. Frankenstein monster's elevator shoes. Having Dracula never show his fangs (in the first Bela Lugosi Dracula movie). And yes, even The Creature from the Black Lagoon not having teeth.
I've wanted Universal to have year round (not just Halloween) acknowledgement of their monsters for a long time and now they're getting the most advanced animatronics ever made. Can't they be grateful?
It's okay to be critical but they were out-right hating on them at a glance, not even watching the video, just some stills.
