As I promised @elodieunderglass (ty for the reminder), pictures of my finished (ish) crazy quilted notebook covers.
If you haven't previously heard of crazy quilting, it was a HUGE craze among housewives in the late 19th century, which revolved around patchworking and appliqueing together irregularly shaped fabric scraps and then embellishing the shit out of them.
I embarked on this project because after filing away the idea of crazy quilts from a coffee table book my spouse picked up in a charity shop a year or so ago, I saw a couple of people on youtube sharing their work; and because I needed covers for my next junk journal.
I cleaved pretty close to the base principles of the style - using precious scraps, making as much of them as possible, and creating a canvas for lots of embroidered embellishment. These two 5x7ish pieces barely used up any volume of my accumulated scraps so there will be more crazy quilting in my future, once I think of ways to make use of it.
I'm very pleased with how the compositions came together, and it was lots of fun picking the embroidery thread colours to speak to all the different patches. Actually the whole things was stupid fun and I worked on barely any other projects or, in fact, chores while Iw as working on it. Next time I will probably match the weight of my fabrics more closely (mostly bc the velvets have made things lumpier than I'd have liked), and I'll prewash the old bits retrieved from my nan's sewing box bc when I rinsed the embroidery pen out from the wild rose piece the pink bled and I was quite lucky it was mostly synthetic patches around it.
Under the cut for an inventory of scraps used (all out of stash)
"love" embroidery, from a magazine kit released ca 2018/19
orange & pink flower print, velvets, floral corduroy, ribbon, and pink twill all from my Nan's sewing box
Pink silk leftover from my wedding dress, flower print and the translucent silk the spider is mounted on from a scrap bag - all from Beckford silks (they don't carry the scrap bags on their website but they're well worth a visit in person if you're in the neighbourhood)
The other printed silk was a tunic of mine which stood up poorly to wear
Blotchy yellow and rust silk from a natural printing demo
Green corduroy and black flower print viscose from Will's sewing projects
Blue and fuchsia check from my old pjs
planets print quilting cotton bought for a hat band from the remnants bin of the friendly local fabric shop
green leaf ribbon leftover from an Audrey ii costume

I’ve loved the look of Victorian crazy patchwork for a long time, so I’m happy I’ve finally tried it. It’s so much fun! Starting with a small project like this was smart, but I’m already planning my next (probably good because I have way too many scraps)

🗣🗣🗣 DRAMA GOING DOWN IN THE SCRAP HAPPY QUILTERS FACEBOOK GROUP!! 🚨🚨🚨🚨
Sorry I'm too lazy to transcribe all the screenshots
Anyway
A lady called Vanessa posted this quilt in the group

Someone made a complaint about it for being political (lololol if only they had seen some of the political quilts that are out there) and the admins took it down, and now people on are losing their minds

Statement from the artist:

Anyway I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these comments. There were lots in opposition to the horror of a political quilt lmao

“Grandma’s Quilt”
This is a quilt for my mother that I binge-sewed to finish as a holiday gift! It is a crazy quilt my grandmother had started who knows how long ago which I found in storage last year and decided to finish. My grandmother had done fifteen 14” blocks and I made five more to fill it out.
It is all hand sewn (except the binding). No idea how long I worked on it in total, all I know is that hand quilting without a hoop or some other type of tensioning rig is a stupid and slow endeavor and I had to restitch a bunch of areas 🙃 DO NOT ask what the back looks like. I cut some corners to finish on time, too.
All in all, turned out well! I will not be making another anytime soon, though. My mother had always wanted one of these, so one and done I think haha.
Thanks for looking!

Happy Fan Joy July, Oma!!!

Oma, thank you so so much for making Fan Joy July and sharing it with us! Our fandom, our artists, writers, readers, etc have loved seeing or taking part in this crazy challenge.
This is our gift to thank you- from artists all around who were affected by, or got gifts from, or took part in Fan Joy July. We all love you so much- so we made letters/art for this (Zelda themed!). Many said that they had already wanted to make/write you something, and this gave an opportunity.
One of the things I've loved about this month is how community/interaction centered you made it. The challenge was for yourself to make art each day (you absolute maniac /affectionate)- but then others joined. This July we saw or made art or fics with recommendations. Every day you made art for a writer with a scene from one of their fics, and inspired others to do the same, and writers even wrote every day for an artist based off an art piece they made! This led to a month of gift giving- everyone interacting and getting love for creating.
You truly led to a month of Joy for a lot of loz/lu fans- making the name "Fan Joy July" quite accurate
Thank you, Oma
Thank you for the gifts you gave all of us and the way you inspire others
Additional ramblings and art credits below the cut :P
I'm so grateful to all my artists who stepped up so we could do this when I asked- almost 36 hours and 19 artists. The art is like patchwork, with all these different styles, both traditional and digital put together. But that's exactly what happened- we all got drawn together, just like the other month-long challenges. It's so cool how art always connects people.
The artists who participated are @zolanort @la-sera @nancyheart11 @galenfeadraws @shade-pup-cub @arecaceae175 @isasan347 @ghosthoard @smilesrobotlover @unexpectedstormy @skyloftian-nutcase @knight-of-aether @uniquevoidflowers @jinxedruby @windwakingwhale @skyward-floored @xaeorian @blarefordaglare and me Thank you to all of you- You are all so cool and I'm glad! If I accidentally missed tagging or listing someone please let me know I'm so scared of if that happened djskdjdkd
There are letters based off of the colours/theme of each of the Lu boys- it's mainly Zelda and linkeduniverse themed... but we couldn't not have frogs for Oma! I did a frog, his name is Froggy and I'm very proud.
Here's a picture with a list of who did what-

Normally I would apologise for my handwriting, but you guys would just tell me it looks good anyways and honestly it does look good. :D Sorry for the ink splotches tho, and I hope you can read it.
We did this for you, Oma, because... well you are awesome /gen. You gave us the opportunity for a great month and we wanted to say thank you for all the joy you brought us so... thank you :)
Art :D
As for everyone who said they wanted to talk to Oma or other Fan Joy July artists who they loved sharing this month with... feel free to tag and share in the reblogs. Share the joy I guess- there's enough to go around :D
Happy Fan Joy July, Oma :))
#fan joy july#fanjoyjuly#<honestly considered putting a shortcut for that phrase in my phone with the amount of times I said it in DMs and this post#I hope the final result is put together ok- this is my first time doing something this crazy. like a patchwork quilt of love :)#thank you again to all my artists yall came through- this place really is like a family#linked universe#linkeduniverse#smoll art#art#Lu#Loz#lu twilight#lu wild#lu four#lu time#lu sky#lu wind#lu chain#lu fic#lu flora#lu legend#lu hyrule#lu warriors#lu wars#lu fierce deity#Lu first#yep those two are there too#Oma#did I really just tag all those arsonists? yes yes I did apparently#my very favourite froggy friend

doing Sam's outfits is slightly harder than expected because I'm fighting the urge to just put him in cute outfits while I'm trying to draw what I think he would Actually wear. not just what he'd slay in, but what he would actually own and wear under the given circumstances.
like I keep picturing him in mock/turtlenecks for work, classy but comfortable, and I just Feel like he wouldn't actually wear an off the shoulder top with a scarf as a shawl and a choker to stand in for the mockneck vibe, even though it would Slay. I feel like he'd think that's too Scandalous for work, at least since he hasn't worked there that long, it's not time to get Wild and start showing Shoulder yet.
I also don't think he'd own a gorgeous fitted dress with gold chains and a slew of gold jewelry. Not because he would never want to wear it but because He Doesn't Make That Kinda Money.
I do think he'd own a silly little onesie tho. As a treat.
#ramblings with major#the magnus protocol#tmagp#samama khalid#alice was so much EASIER cuz shes BEEN THERE for almost TEN YEARS it would make SENSE for her to care less about dress code#and i already decided shes obsessed with flannel and does diys in her spare time so her making a patchwork skirt#of work-appropriate length and wearing it isnt that crazy#but sam tho.... he doesnt strike me as a diy type. he'll sew up a hole but thats about it he's not gonna handmake a garment#i think hes at least somewhat stylish tho. he knows what kinds of items he likes and they look good together he can piece together a Fit

Attempting to fit the crazy quilt panel onto the book cover it was built for.
Genuinely so pleased with the way the composition has come out, I just hope that the variation in fabric weight doesn't scupper a meat finish too terribly much

Permanently tormented by my desire to share the plot and development and arcs that my oc stories involve except that that would take an insane amount of work and skill that I don’t have. Laying down and dying…………. can u guys look into my brain and see it instead
#I been trying writing again#FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!#not to mention the src as it stands as a narrative is already kind of fundamentally flawed#because in a lot of ways it’s just a patchwork of like 3 other ocs stories#it’s not good webcomic material! wasn’t really meant to be one#and yet#I really really really really want to tell the story of how ripley and Jeremy became friends!!#I love them so MUCH!!!#U GUYS NEED TO SEE THE SHIT IN MY BRAIN!! I've been really inspired by the visible mending ideas on @wastelesscrafts page, and decided to give it a shot on my cat-scratched couch.
Details on the process below the image description for anyone interested.
[Image ID: Three pictures of the back right corner of an olive green suede couch, each image from a slightly different angle. There is a hole in the fabric just below the back of the armrest, roughly the size and shape of the sole of a shoe. The hole has been patched with a cream-colored fabric with a thick, textured weave. The surrounding area of the couch has loose threads from cat scratches. End Image ID.]
This corner of the couch is their absolute favorite scratching spot, and they made a hole down to the wood that was bigger than my hand. I didn't bother making the edges pretty because I expect that they'll have this destroyed soon too, though I'm considering adding vines & flowers if it holds up well over the next month or so.
I used scrap upholstery fabric in a color I thought looked nice, and embroidery floss (3 strands, not 6, too hard to get through fabric) that matched the couch. I would list what stitches I used but honestly there was absolutely no method to the madness. Some combination of determination and desperation seemed to do the trick though.
Even with thimbles this was murder. The thick fabrics + the upholstery padding made this really tough, I wouldn't recommend this if you have issues with finger mobility, strength, or sensitivity.
Funky project, would spend a day on it again, but only after my fingers heal.

Each grain gripped tightly
As if to slow time itself
Silently slipping through fingertips
Secrets to healing and health
Come from letting go
Palm up
Filled with sand
Times arrow matches on
Heeding no-ones demand
To slow down
Or turn back
Slipping through fingertips
As if a handmade hourglass
Could save each minute
The way time stood still
When those hands were intertwined
Under sheets, in the dark
Cradling a gentle spark
