Enterographa crassa

This crustose lichen has a thick, waxy thallus that grows in lumpy patches surrounded by a black prothallus, often resulting in a mosaic-like pattern as separate, abutting thalli spread across the substrate surface. It varies in color from pale gray to brown to olive to green, and has immersed, black apothecia which vary in shape from dot-like to script-like. E. crassa grows on shaded, smooth-barked tree trunks and shrubs (and occasionally rock) in mild-temperate, European woodlands.

One of the weirdest plants I've ever seen is Corynaea crassa, which a colleague found when we were on a trip to Cerro de la Muerte in Costa Rica. It's a parasitic plant with a large underground structure and these weird flowering structures aboveground, with no photosynthetic leaves or stems. In the Andes, this plant is sometimes used as a male aphrodisiac (supposedly it doesn't work for women). It seems to like high elevations, but has multiple hosts it can parasitize.

I finished what I was working on tonight, but I’m not going to post it until I’ve slept and then checked it for errors.  But I did a cooldown doodle.

Decided to put Dokuta back in the vault and pull out a different vintage monster boy.  Crassa hasn’t had a drawing in a while.  He immediately started doing this really smug face when I started the sketch.  I went along with it, but I’ll probably regret it.  I don’t know what exactly it means that he’s playing with one of his own flowers but it’s probably really inappropriate.  If he offers to pollenate with you, just tell him you’re allergic.

The original Nature Microbiology paper is such a fun read too! Going from a traditional food, isolating and identifying the fungus, characterising and comparing the genomes, growing it on various foods and checking what it does (to them), and finally, doing a taste test with the original food to show its potential among new consumers! What a dream paper! It’s so goddamn cool!!!

A lot of things in this article sound delicious but most of all this meat, grain and vegetable sausage they infest with the fungus so it all breaks down smoother. There are three whole kingdoms of life in that one sausage. Give me that. They say the fungus tastes like anything from pineapple to cheddar cheese depending on what it's mixed with and how it's cooked

Ruschia crassa

Ruschia is a large genus in the Aizoaceae, or Ice Plant Family, with over 200 species. But only a small number of these are seen in the nursery trade, and there are all sorts of interesting discoveries to be made if one starts investigating this group. While most of the species have flowers in the pink-magenta-purple range, Ruschia crassa is an exception with its white flowers. It is also unusual in the way its leaves clasp the stems, only curving outward a bit at the tip. This trait is shared with several other related species, but it gives them a unique look. R. crassa comes from South Africa’s Great Karoo region.

#2664 - Gaultheria crassa - Scarlet Snowberry

Also known as Gaultheria rupestris var. parvifolia, and Gaultheria rupestris var. humilis.

Another endemic New Zealand snowberry, most abundant among subalpine and alpine scrub on the South Island, and among shrubland on the eastern side of the Southern Alps.

It's quite likely that the ten species of Gaultheria in Aotearoa evolved from South American species, and that Australia's examples evolved from Aotearoan ones.

Unfortunately, introduced herbivores such as chamois, goats and tahr find the shrubs extremely palatable.
