i want to escape from princess lessons AU. in which damen is clark, laurent is letty, and they are - as always - caught in a game of laurent's own making

“You’ve caught me,” says Laurent, “again.”

“Well,” Damen says, adjusting Laurent’s body over his shoulder. He carries Laurent like he weighs nothing, which Laurent finds deeply, deeply irritating, “I did say I would always catch you.”

“Charming.”

“Aren’t I?”

Damen laughs. Laurent resists the urge to kick him in the stomach.

Despite Laurent’s protests, Damen only puts him down when they get back to the palace. There is no one around to watch them, thank the gods, but Laurent’s cheeks still heat when Damen places his hands on Laurent’s waist to steady him. If his own hands wrap themselves around Damen’s arms, then it is simply because he needs the extra stability.

“So,” Damen starts, smiling in a way so self-satisfied that Laurent immediately feels a headache coming on, “you think I’m charming?”

“Whatever gave you that idea?”

“I’m sure I could jog your memory.”

“Brute.”

“You have a leaf in your hair,” says Damen, suddenly. He reaches out, hand hovering just above Laurent’s head. “May I?”

Laurent wants to say no, wants to say you’ve already caught me once today, I won’t be caught again, but Damen is watching him with too-bright eyes and a kind of affection Laurent has only just begun to comprehend, that Laurent finds himself saying, “You may.”

Carefully, Damen plucks the leaf out of Laurent’s hair. His fingers brush softly against the strands, displacing the leaf, and Laurent wouldn’t even have noticed it if he weren’t paying attention – but he is. His skin prickles with goosebumps at the sensation, and he hopes that Damen doesn’t notice.

“There,” Damen says, soft enough to be a whisper. Then, “Will you let me catch you again next time?”

“Do I have a choice?” Laurent says. He means for his tone to be more dry, more derisive, but instead the words come out sounding entirely too genuine. “Somehow you always seem to be one step ahead of me.”

“That won’t do,” Damen says. He steps closer. Like this, Laurent thinks, Damen’s affection is so warm it burns the both of them.  “All I ever want to be is right next to you.”

Draco was sitting at his desk. He was surrounded by mounds of paperwork he still had to get done as soon as possible. His supervisor wanted it to be done by the end of the day, though Draco knew that wasn’t possible. Not today at least.

He hadn’t been able to concentrate on anything from the moment he had sat down in his office that morning. Every little sound coming from the hallway into his office was too much. Every flicker of light, every moving shadow was too much. It was impossible to focus.

The only thing that wouldn’t leave his mind was the project he had submitted earlier that day. It was something he had been working on for weeks, months even. He had spent days on end trying to perfect it. He had put so much work into it. And after all that time, it was finally ready to submit it.

Now the only thing he could do was wait for the approval of his supervisors. There had been some responses from his colleagues already. They had been mostly positive, complimenting him on his hard work. But Draco was still waiting.

He was bouncing his leg now, his fingers tapping repeatedly against the wooden top of his desk. He couldn’t take it anymore. When were they going to answer, dammit? The day was almost over already.

He pushed his chair back abruptly and was about to stand up and start pacing around his small office when someone knocked on the open door. Harry walked inside, his face lit up with that very charming smile of his. He carried two large cups of coffee and gave one to Draco, the smile still in place.

However, it only took one look at Draco’s face for the smile to disappear. Harry frowned. “What’s wrong?”

Draco turned the warm cup of coffee around in his hands. He chewed the inside of his cheek. “Nothing’s wrong.”

Harry took a step closer. “Okay, then,” he said, taking a sip from his coffee. “What’s on your mind?”

Sighing deeply, Draco turned away from Harry, avoiding his questioning eyes. “The project.”

Carefully, Harry sat down on the worn armchair in Draco’s office. “You submitted it?”

“Mhm.” With his cup still in hand, Draco leant on the edge of his desk, following the pattern in the rug with his eyes. “I still haven’t gotten any reaction from the higher-ups and it’s driving me crazy!” Draco’s voice rose in volume. He was squeezing the cup now, anxious frustration boiling in his veins.

Harry stood from his chair and walked over to Draco, placing his cup on the desk. “Can I touch you?” he asked softly. When Draco nodded, he wrapped his arms around Draco’s waist, pulling him closer. “It will be fine,” he said quietly, his voice not much louder than a whisper. “You’ll get your answer soon. I’m certain they will approve and then–”

Harry was cut short by a small piece of paper folder like an airplane flying into the room. It landed in the middle of Draco’s desk.

Inhaling sharply, Draco reached for the paper with shaking hands. He unfolded it slowly.

It didn’t take much time for him to read the words that were written on it. And it took even less time for tears to fill his eyes and stream down his cheeks. “They rejected the project,” he whispered, letting the paper fall onto his desk.

His hands were shaking now, his breathing becoming short. “I had already thought of so many ways it could benefit us. It could change some important things! And I thought we could do it and make things better. But they… they just…”

A sob wrecked through his body, his shoulders shaking.

“Hey.” Harry pulled him closer, one of his hands resting at the back of Draco’s neck and rubbing calming circles into the soft skin there. “It’s okay, Draco, my love. Even if these arseholes rejected it, it doesn’t mean you didn’t do a great job! You did an amazing job!”

But Draco shook his head. “It just feels like they don’t care about me. Whenever I suggest something, even if it is as small as more quills to write with, they turn me down immediately. They don’t care. It doesn’t matter how much work I put in every single day, I’m not important enough. I don’t belong…”

“Oh, Draco,” Harry whispered, leaning in and placing a tender kiss on Draco’s forehead. “My sweet, sweet Draco. You are important, to me and to so many other people.” He wiped a tear away from Draco’s face. “I don’t give a flying shit what these heartless bastards think of your project or of you. And, honestly, neither should you. But I know that’s easier said than done.” He huffed a humourless laugh, shaking his head. “For all I care, they can come kiss the great Harry Potter’s arse.”

A quiet chuckle escaped Draco’s lips at those words. He looked at Harry with watery eyes. “Thank you.”

Harry looked back at him, that charming smile appearing once more. “Of course, love. Anytime.” He let go of Draco and extended a hand. “Ready to go home?”

Draco nodded, a small thankful smile playing around his lips. Harry was right. He shouldn’t care what other people think about him, especially not his stupid, annoying supervisors. As long as he could be himself around the people he loved, he had nothing to worry about.

With new growing confidence, he took Harry’s hand, their fingers automatically tangling together. “Yes, please. Let’s go home.”

And if he had any say into it, he would never return.

Okay as promised, here's a breakdown of how I feel about each October writing challenge so far + if I'll be doing them next year.

Whumptober

Okay, this one pushed me to my gd limits as a writer but holy hell has it made me grow. I'm really proud of my work with this one so far and very happy with how I split it up into different fics + two one shots. People's engagement with the Keith fic has been incredibly rewarding. Terms and Conditions is probably one of my favorite things I've ever written in terms of how hard I worked on it and that hard work paying off. The change in quality from rough draft to finished product has made me much more confident in both my editing and writing skills.

I will 100% be doing this one next year.

Flufftober

Another challenge I've really enjoyed. Though, I consider it less of a challenge than a fun little pallet cleanser. The drabbles I've written for it have been a nice way to relax over the month.

Kinktober under the cut, minors keep scrolling

Kinktober

I was a bit reluctant to participate in this one in general. Even if the original creator disappeared off the internet, their commitment to defending loli/shota and people jerking it to fictional CP was... troubling to say the least and left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole event. So, maybe I was a bit negative/nervous going in.

While there are some fics in the collection I've really enjoyed writing, most of them have felt like a chore. I also can't help but feel thats somewhat reflected in the quality of those pieces, which I hate.

I've also realized I really prefer using sex more so as a medium to show off different emotional vulnerabilities of characters and exploring how they approach sex as a reflection of their traumas and insecurities. I feel like writing smut in a vacuum of PWP has really taken a lot of that out.

I can't help but think of You and I Were Fireworks and the second chapter sex scene there. It showcases how James is hurting, his desperate need for Keith, and Keith doing things he normally wouldn't for James sake. It communicates how each is going into rekindling this relationship and how James has changed from being very passive in his relationships for fear of rejection to taking charge. Also the lack of impulse control on James' part helps hint at just how convinced he is that he's going to die in this war.

I feel like I haven't reached that same level of storytelling in any of the Kinktober fics, even the ones I've enjoyed writing.

I'll finish the month out, but I don't think I'll be doing this one again.

Is an angery boi. Not really, he’s just used to being one of the taller ones, so the fact that you are taller than him is pretty weird to him. 

Once when he was picking on Ben for being to short Ben just went straight to you and you resolved the problem, to Jeff’s displeasure and Bens humor.

Is slightly surprised. Honestly, to be taller than him is a very rare thing, so he’ll take it in stride because he honestly doesn't care.

Masky

Fine. Be that way. He kinda cares now. A little grumpy about it, but all you gotta do is lean on his shoulder with a smug grin and he’ll shut up.

Height doesn't matter to him. He will use the fact that he’s shorter than you to his advantage though.
