Useful adaptive stuff
So, up front, my issues include: EDS, POTS, RA, sjogren’s and a number of other issues which make me tired, dizzy and in pain a lot of the time. I’m going to list some things that help me, and other things that I’ve tried that haven’t helped me as much. YOUR MILEAGE WILL VARY but I welcome and encourage people to add to this with things that work for them. Below the cut: More comfortable computing, lightweight power wheelchairs, showers, and medication management.
First issue for me is making computers and especially typing work. Requirements: elevated legs, neutral neck position, minimal shoulder stress, neutral hand and arm positions on bad pain days.
I used to do my computing from a recliner, but it was very hard to position a laptop or monitor in a good space, even with a stand. What works better: an XL twin adjustable memory foam bed (would replace with full if I had the space) next to a wall, with a laptop mounted to the wall on an arm. The adjustable bed frame was <$400, the mattress was about the same, the wall mount was $60-70.
This all requires a USB keyboard or two. Why two? Because I can get a Logitech K360 for $20-ish most of the time, but split keyboards cost $90 or so usually. I don’t always need a split keyboard, just when I’m in a bad flare or changing meds. But two $20 wireless keyboards ON SEPARATE DONGLES will work as a split keyboard, just prop everything with enough pillows and your hands in relaxed, natural positions near your hips with each keyboard angled just right. It takes me about 5 minutes to adapt so that it’s natural to use two instead of one, but I touch type. The K360 is particularly good for “bounce and clickiness”... it’s quiet but not silent, and gives good feedback for key presses but doesn’t require a lot of pressure. They’re also pretty resiliant to dropping, kids, and liquids, though my resident product testers have managed to test a few of them to destruction. When I was using a recliner I had a bad habit of putting the keyboard behind my head and then being surprised when it rocketed off the back like a catapult and it still lasted a year or more being dropped (or flung) multiple times per day.
It also requires a good mouse. Track pads and laptop keyboards are from the devil for ergonomics. I like the Jellycomb upright mouse. It’s a natural, wrist-friendly thing to use, and does not exacerbate my wrists or hands. It works best for me on a green pillow that sits next to me on the bed. Other super useful gadget is the Logitech K480 wireless bluetooth keyboard. This is heavy enough to be stable and can act as a stand for a phone or tablet, and lets me type in my wheelchair without coping with a whole laptop. It’s sturdy, stable, and can be synced to 3 devices via a little wheel. It makes my phone an actual useful tool for Google Docs.
Second issue for me is getting out of the house
Dizziness, a tendency to fall off my feet and six different conditions with “fatigue” as a side effect had me 90% housebound even before Covid19. Insurance paid for a big power chair (magic words are “occasionally have a hard time getting to the bathroom) when I was sicker than I am right now, but I have no good way of getting a 434 pound wheelchair in and out of my minivan, which complains and acts like it has no shocks when I transport the thing the hard way (ramp, husband, tears, hypermobile party tricks are required to get the thing into my vehicle).
But 97% of the time I don’t need the heavier chair for errands, though it’s a godsend for getting out in the neighborhood and conventions. What works better for me is a lightweight folding power chair. There are a variety of these, but they all have a similar design. The batteries go in the supports of the chair. The chairs run 40-50 pounds without batteries, the batteries add about 8 pounds each. They have kick brakes in the back which can turn the chair into a manual transport chair. Even at my tiredest, I can unlock and lock the brakes, tip the front of the chair up while standing behind it, and wheel it into my minivan without a ramp, without folding it. Alone. And on bad days, whoever’s helping me to the car is usually happy to roll the thing in for me... and they’re shocked at how easy it is.
But traveling, it went easily onto the plane without getting broken, and fit in every single taxi we tried, even sedan ones, folded. Better, the one I have, the Electra HD, has a wider seat (I added my own better cushion) and a higher weight limit (400 pounds) than some models. I’ve seen this general class of chair as low as about $1800 and mine was more like $3200 because higher weight limit. This thing means I don’t have to factor in my ability to walk into whether or not I go somewhere. With a helper, I was even able to tackle the Underground in London last year, though I would not repeat “going down 7 flights to Piccadilly” with my husband and a random stranger shlepping the thing while I hobbled after it again. It’s light enough that random strangers can and will help you lift the thing in a pinch. Battery life is LONG.
A big, solid power chair is very nice if you have to be in it all the goddamn time and are only taking public transport on accessible buses. I can lie down with my big chair. But I don’t usually need to do that when going to the store or the doctor. A lightweight chair is far more essential to getting out of the goddamn house for me, a part-time wheelchair user.
Third issue is showers
I find showers exhausting and while I can take a very fast shower without losing it for the rest of the day, if I want to dye or cut my hair, I need to be in there longer than I can stand. So I sit. There are cheap, comfortable plastic bariatric shower chairs for under $30. I think mine is a Carex? Also, a shower with a handheld unit is a lot easier to get clean with. I like the kind with a dual head so that I don’t have to choose between water on my head and getting the rest of me clean. Shower chairs are something worth getting for almost anyone who ever has to shower tired, disabled or not.
Fourth issue is sorting supplements and medications
I have tried the little flip top pill minders with 7, 14 or 28 slots. I have tried jumbo versions of same. I have tried little 2x3 plastic baggies. I have tried dixie cups and then pour into the plastic baggies. I have tried the rainbow cups that screw into each other but are never around when you need them. Best solution for large numbers of supplements (the number of vitamins I take is not large compared to an average multivitamin but I can’t take multivitamins, I have to take the individual things. Which gets bulky.) For a while I was using plastic condiment cups, like people use for ketchups in restaurants that don’t use packets, but I didn’t like the idea of using plastic all the time, even if I do reuse them several times each. FabriKal Greenware has a “portion cup” that is cheap and does the trick. They’re made from plants (it’s a sugar-based polymer that requires commercial composting, but otherwise it functions like plastic without being a petrochemical.) This is good because I can make a variable number of cups (25 seems to work best at this point), filling is easy (just line ‘em up and drop things in) and the lids pop on without too much trouble, and they stack. Mot people won’t need more than a 2 oz cup. Don’t forget lids.

Coronavirus Outbreak LATEST Updates: The first batch of 326 Indian nationals stranded in the UK due to the coronavirus-linked global travel restrictions arrived here from London early on Sunday morning. The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 39,834, while 17,846 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, the Union Health Ministry said. Saturday also saw Maharashtra crossing the 20,000 mark, as per official figures released by the state health department, with the state now accounting for one-third of the total confirmed cases in the country, while large numbers of cases continued to get detected in Gujarat, Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the testing capacity for COVID-19 has been ramped up to around 95,000 tests per day and a total of over 15 lakh tests have been conducted so far across hundreds of government and private labs. However, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the two new cases in his state -- two foreign returnees who had reached Kerala on 7 May in two separate flights under a massive ongoing evacuation plan of the Central Government -- is a warning for all states to be on an alert to strengthen their "mitigation efforts and preventive measures." Many more similar flights from abroad are reaching Kerala and several other states over the next few days under what is being called the 'Vande Bharat' mission. Besides the arrival of a large number of Indians stranded abroad, experts have also warned that the numbers may rise further in the coming days due to the ongoing movement of lakhs of migrant workers being facilitated by trains and buses to help them reach their native places. On Saturday, the situation remained worrying in India's major hotspots like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chennai, among others. While Mumbai cases reached 12,864 cases, with the metropolis now accounting for more than of Maharashtra's total infections, the adjoining Thane district crossed the 2000-mark. In Chennai, the number of cases linked to the Koyambedu market cluster reached 1,867 with the market for vegetables, flowers and fruits eclipsing the Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi (in which about 1,500 people from Tamil Nadu had taken part in March) for the dispersion of the virus. Besides, reports of fresh infections in the Central Armed Police Forces, which is responsible for providing security along the border as well as securing key industries and establishments, presenting a fresh challenge for the Central Government. Goa, on the other hand, which is classified as a green zone with no coronavirus positive case as of now, hinted that it may allow holding of music classes and reopening of some state-run libraries in a phased manner on the condition of maintaining strict social distancing norms. Cases from states: Maharashtra crosses 20,000 mark On Saturday, Maharashtra reported 1,165 new coronavirus patients, taking the tally of COVID-19 cases in the state to 20,228. The state also reported death of 48 patients, taking the death toll to 779, said a health department official. Among those died of COVID-19 on Saturday was a 51-year-old police constable from Maharashtra's Nashik district, an official said. This is the sixth death of a police personnel due to COVID-19 in the state, the official added. Meanwhile, in Gujarat, the number of coronavirus cases in Gujarat climbed to 7,797 on Saturday with 394 new cases coming to light, while death toll rose to 472 with 23 more deaths, a senior health official said. Of the total new cases, 280 were reported from hotspot Ahmedabad, along with 20 more deaths on Saturday, taking the total case count to 5,540 in the district and fatalities to 363, a health department official said. In Gujarat, the number of patients who died in 24 hours since Friday evening — 23 — was the lowest in the last seven days, Principal Secretary (Health) Jayanti Ravi said. Four COVID-19 deaths were reported in Tamil Nadu on Saturday with the state recording 526 more positive cases, including a five day old baby, taking the total number to 6,535, the health department said. The deceased were all women, with three hailing from Chennai and one from Ramanathapuram. With this, the death toll has gone up to 44, a health department bulletin said. Of the total of 526 positive cases, Chennai continued to lead the numbers with 279, followed by Villupuram 67 and Chengalpattu at 40. In the National Capital Delhi also, 224 new COVID-19 cases were recorded to take its tally to 6,542. In Delhi, there was also confusion over the death toll as the data from the four hospitals showed more fatalities than the number reported by the Delhi government. Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain said there is no reason to hide anything and not a single case will go unaccounted for, but gave no explanation for the discrepancy. There has been a mismatch in the numbers of West Bengal also for several days with the state government's figures being lower than that of the Union Health Ministry. On the outskirts of the National Capital, Noida reported its second COVID-19 death while its total cases rose to 216. The overall figure for Uttar Pradesh also rose. Rajasthan recorded 76 more cases, while 36 new cases were detected in Karnataka too. In Bihar, five Bihar Military Police (BMP) personnel tested positive, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 579. In Assam, a dental college student's test came positive. Central forces report 116 new cases The growing number of infections in five Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) - CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF and SSB - under the command of the Union home ministry, has emerged as another challenge for the Central Government. On Saturday, at least 116 fresh coronavirus infections were reported by the uniformed organisation, taking the total number of positive personnel to over 650, officials said. Of the new cases, CRPF accounts for 62, BSF 35, CISF 13 and ITBP reported 6 fresh cases. As of now, the total active cases in these forces stands at 231 in CRPF, 256 in BSF, 48 in CISF and 100 in the ITBP. Five personnel of these forces have succumbed to the disease, a senior paramilitary officer said. After home minister Shah's review, the AIIMS in Jhajjar has been designated as a special coronavirus facility for the CAPF personnel apart from their 200-bedded referral hospital in Greater Noida. Health ministry revises policy for discharge The Union Health Ministry has also revised its policy for discharge of COVID-19 patients under which only those developing severe illness or having compromised immunity will have to test negative through RT-PCR test before being discharged by a hospital. Moderate cases of COVID-19 and pre-symptomatic, mild and very mild cases need not undergo tests before being discharged after resolution of their symptoms. According to the rules till now, a patient was considered fit to be discharged if he or she tested negative on day 14 and then again in a span of 24 hours. Political tussle over migrant trains continue The bodies of sixteen migrant labourers who were mown down by a goods train in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district were brought to Jabalpur by two bogies attached to a special train. From Jabalpur, the coaches were further sent to Shahdol and Umaria, said a police officer. Karnataka, which has been at the centre of a controversy over the state government disallowing migrants to leave the state, clarified on Saturday that migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons can hire and use buses provided by state-run road transport corporations on payment basis for travel to other states with relevant permissions. However, the political tussle over special trains for stranded migrant lbourers continued on Saturday with Union home minister Amit Shah, in a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the state was not allowing trains with migrant workers reach the state and termed it as an "injustice" towards these workers. The state government, however, dismissed the charge by saying 6,000 stranded workers have already been brought back, and the state has given green signal to 10 trains carrying more such workers. This claim was rejected by Indian Railways with officials too saying that there was no proposal on record so far with the national transporter to run any more 'shramik' trains to the state. According to reports, so far only two trains ferrying migrants have reached West Bengal. The railways, however, on Saturday night said it had received "clearance" from West Bengal for running eight special trains to the state to ferry people stranded outside due to the ongoing lockdown. On Saturday, a war of words also erupted between the JD(U) and the AAP over train fares of 1,200 Bihar-bound migrant workers, with the Arvind Kejriwal dispensation saying that it bore the cost of ferrying the migrants, a claim rejected by the JD(U) which said the party was speaking half-truth on the issue. The ruling Janata Dal (United) in Bihar said the AAP-led Delhi government has sought reimbursement of the payment and accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of resorting to "cheap politics to gain popularity". Meanwhile, NCP chief Sharad Pawaron Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak to the chief ministers of states, who are not allowing migrants to return home. "I humbly request our @PMOIndia Shri Narendra Modi ji to intervene in this matter by talking to the CMs of the respective states who are not allowing these people to come back home," Pawar said in a series of tweets without mentioning any specific state. 362 people from West Asia arrive in Kochi As for Indians stranded abroad, two Air India Express flights carrying 362 people from Oman and Kuwait arrived at the international airport in Kochi on Saturday night. There were a total of 362 people, including eight infants in the flights which landed here from the two Gulf nations, a Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) spokesman said. Official sources said all the passengers would be subjected to COVID-19 rapid test at the airport before being transferred to their respective destinations by special taxis and KSRTC buses. They will go into quarantine after completing formalities at the airport. Another Air India Express flight from Doha, carrying 177 passengers and six infants, is expected to arrive here early hours on Sunday, sources said. Another special Air India flight carrying 177 Indians has left Kula Lumpur for Trichy, Tamil Nadu, ANI said. According to sources, three other Air India flights - from Singapore (with 243 passengers), from London with (329 passengers) and from Manila (241 passengers) are expected to reach Mumbai on Sunday. Globally, nearly 40 lakh people have tested positive for the deadly virus since its emergence in China last December, while approximately 2.75 lakh people have lost their lives. However, nearly 13 lakh people have recovered too, including nearly 2 lakh in the US and over 1.4 lakh in Germany. Germany and South Korea are among those countries that have been seen as having successfully avoided large number of deaths by their extensive testing and contact tracing measures. But, worries mounted on Saturday about fresh outbreaks in both the countries following various lockdown relaxations, thus raising the risks associated with reopening of economies. Don't Buy the Airline Industry's Snow Job on Inflight Hygiene
I love travel and unlike some railfans I am not usually given to slagging on the airlines. Nevertheless, I do think the airline industry (especially in the USA) has lots of rage-inducing practices and I have always resented the industry's insistence that treating passengers well is diametrically at odds with controlling costs- that has always been a false dichotomy in my opinion- and I am especially disappointed with the ongoing degradation of the front-cabin (business and first class) experience. Now covid19 is crushing passenger airlines, and this supposedly "profitable" industry has shoveled up $25 billion taxpayer dollars, roughly 25 years' worth of Federal Amtrak subsidies, with every indication that they will ask for more in short order. Meanwhile, the very business model of airlines as they have operated to date is now in question and the industry refuses to address the questions. To be clear, I am not referring to the temporary problem of lack of demand due to economic conditions and travel restrictions: I am talking about the business model predicated on packing people into a tiny space that is irritant and uncomfortable for many hours without basic provisions for health or sanitation. Taxpayers are owed more than what this industry is offering in the way of a get-well plan before they throw good money after bad.
Let's get something straight: social distancing is and always will be impossible on an airliner, except maybe if you are the only passenger or one of a very small handful of passengers on a widebody jet. That's not where the industry's unaddressed existential threat lies though. The airlines are now hard at work reminding everyone about how the "hospital grade" air filtration on their planes is keeping air travel safe. They will tout that most (in other words: not all) modern airliners are equipped with HEPA air filtration. Well, congratulations! You're employing the same air filtration technology I can get in a 12-pack of filters for the furnace in my basement for an average extra cost of about $1.50 per. Despite the fact that these filters are cheap commodities, I still wonder if the maximum recommended replacement interval is being observed in the same industry that can't bring itself to properly maintain their fleets overall. Moreover, all the talk about the air purification systems on mainline jets like Boeing 737s is in plain denial of the fact that at least half of passengers end up spending part if not all of their journey on a regional jet. I wonder why they aren't talking about the air filtration systems on Canadair CRJ-200s or Embraer 145s? Could it be that planes that barely have enough space for each passenger's overnight bag don't have much of an air purification system?
Air filtration aside, the reality of air travel and health is that it is not the cleanliness of the air that endangers your health during a respiratory pandemic. The problem is the dryness of the air. On average, the relative humidity in a modern airliner cabin is a parched 12% and it is almost always less than 20%, lower than the 30% threshold for discomfort for humans. Dry air irritates pretty much all types of human tissue including the skin, the lungs, and the sinus passages. This causes postnasal drip, coughing and sneezing. The air inside planes is so dry that it will cause many people to sniffle, cough, and sneeze even if they aren't sick, and if your skin is dried out and itchy, you're going to touch it. This is why people get sick when they fly: in addition to being in a very tight space with a bunch of strangers for several hours, you and your fellow passengers are coughing and sneezing and scratching in that tight space. Fomites and moisture droplets are getting sprayed everywhere constantly: the seats, the carpets, the tray tables, the armrests, the seat belts- not just the things you think you can avoid touching. Even worse, there are plenty of substances for those droplets and particles to cling to: many is the time I've sat at a window seat to be grossed out by the greasy haze left by a previous passenger who slept with their head against the window and thought to myself what kind of petri dish must the interior panels on this aircraft be? Whatever gets drawn into the HEPA filters is going to be trapped there, but I think its a safe bet that most of the particles and droplets stay anchored to whatever surface they land on.
There is an urban legend that airlines routinely dial down the amount of fresh air that is drawn into cabins to save fuel and this has been debunked- the ratio of fresh to recirculated air on a plane is basically factory-set and cannot be adjusted inflight and there is rarely any prescribed reason for ground mechanical personnel to change it either- slow-onset hypoxia will kill a person before they realize what is happening, so this is a bit more serious than saving a few bucks on fuel. The moisture content of cabin air, on the other hand, is something that can be altered. Airlines are so loath to do anything about it due to the cost of retrofitting humidification systems to planes as well as the cost in fuel and space of hauling a tank of heavy water aloft that it isn't even being considered in the realm of possibility. Picture that tiny 50-seat Canadair CRJ-200 once again, which on a good day gives you about as much personal space as you might have in the back seat of a fully loaded car, and ask yourself where and how we might retrofit this aircraft for improved cabin air quality. The answer is simple: the days of traveling like this are over. Planes like the CRJ-200 are flying bio-exposure labs- you won’t share more of your fellow passengers’ bodily materials without having a one-night stand with each of them.
Beyond misleading people about irrelevant cabin air quality, what are the airlines going to do to keep passengers safe? They will block off the middle seats on planes, but this accomplishes exactly nothing except to make passengers a little more comfortable (and to this extent I applaud it). They will make you wear a mask- and this is a good thing, but only until you take that mask off to have a drink or eat something, which you are welcome to try to avoid doing on an 8-10 hour flight. Despite this reality, I fully expect anyone who isn’t able to abstain from eating or drinking for the duration of the flight to be cuffed and stuffed upon arrival. They might end up blood testing passengers or requiring health documentation to fly, and frankly, these seemingly drastic measures might be the only hope for air travel. Expect the cost of the test or certifying yourself to be a new ticket tax, because, well its not like you gave them $25 billion or anything like that, right? If you are expecting things like planes getting sanitized between flights or even cheap yet thoughtful things like a personal bottle of sanitizer and a mask at your seat so that even people who have been unexpectedly separated from their luggage have the appropriate supplies, forget about it: they can't even figure out how to afford to give you three ounces of peanuts. Rest assured that despite whatever risk their practices introduce for you, the airlines intend to make you fully responsible for any bit of nastiness you might be exposed to on board.
I am not a germophobe and I accept reality: I am not going to say that you should hop on a train for your next hygienic travel experience. Are you more socially distanced in a sleeping car compartment than on an airliner? Yes, but only somewhat, and if you're traveling in coach its basically the same as flying from that perspective. Obviously, the safest way for most people to travel intercity during a pandemic is via automobile, as long as you are careful and have the right supplies (having your own car makes this much easier though). Unfortunately, you're not going to be able to hop in the family truckster for a trip from Miami to London. I haven't been able to find any information on the moisture content of passenger train air either, but I am pretty sure its very different from an airliner since railroad car ventilation systems are not subject to the same mechanical constraints. I have personal experience to back this up: I have spent weeks crisscrossing North America and Europe on trains and have never experienced such a thing as an "Amtrak cold" or an "Amtrak flu." Considering the challenges associated with maintaining cleanliness on a train making a fifty hour journey, that says a lot. As far as cleaning supplies or masks go, well, people who take Amtrak cross country have been bringing family-size spray cans of Lysol on board since the 1980s- nobody with experience would leave home without one.

COVID19 Updates: 07/17/2021
World: A vaccinated Foo Fighter tests positive for covid, the concert that unvaxxed were banned from gets cancelled (oh, the irony)
Thailand: NEW: Thailand reports 10,082 new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase so far, and a record 141 new deaths
Japan: Tokyo reports 1,410 new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase since January, as the city prepares for the Olympics
France: France reports 10,908 new coronavirus cases, up 143% from last week and the biggest one-day increase since May
US: U.S. COVID update: More than 41,000 new cases, biggest one-day increase since early May - New cases: 41,445 - Average: 30,566 (+1,663) - In hospital: 23,492 (+688) - In ICU: 5,906 (+237) - New deaths: 349
Florida: NEW: Florida reports 8,225 new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase since April 13
California: Los Angeles County reports 1,902 new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase since March 5
Israel: Israel faces the prospect of another lockdown only a month after social distancing and mask rules were dropped, amid a fourth wave of Covid-19. LINK
UK: UK Health secretary Sajid Javid has tested positive for Covid-19, despite having received both vaccination jabs. LINK
Japan: BREAKING: Officials report first confirmed case of coronavirus at the Olympic Village in Tokyo
UK: "The warning light on the NHS dashboard is not flashing amber, it is flashing red” Jeremy Hunt has warned Boris Johnson may be forced to reimpose lockdown restrictions LINK
France: In several cities of France they're on the streets, again, protesting against the vaccine passes and mandatory vaccination of health workers A speaker tells the crowd “The vaccine does not protect as Macron says: in Gibraltar, despite 99% vaccinated, the epidemic is starting again."
RUMINT (US): Locally, in my neck of the woods, I learned last night that a gentleman, outdoorsman, hunter, sportsman, worked with the youth sports groups passed away from Covid. I don't know if he was vaxxed, but the caught Covid on vacation while traveling with his family. He was treated locally. I learned this on a Friday evening. This is going to happen more and more. Imagine being on your hard-earned vacation, contracting Covid and dying. The world is not showing compassion and mercy.
RUMINT (NYC): Long Island here. For the most part adults are not wearing masks anywhere. I’d say about 50 percent of kids are still masking up when indoors. All social distancing and restrictions have been lifted and there are crowds everywhere. Restaurants, bars, amusement parks, movie theaters and beach’s. Lots of summer tourists. Starting to have outbreaks at summer camps. If the parents of the sick child are vaccinated they do not have to quarantine and can go about normal life. I know of 2 kids who have caught symptomatic Covid in the last few weeks. 1 child has spread it to the whole unvaccinated family. So far the other child’s family (who is vaccinated) has not shown symptoms but we don’t know if they are symptomatic due to the vaccine. Have a feeling things will get messy in the next 6 weeks.
UK: #COVID19: The London Underground's Metropolitan line has been suspended and others are facing disruption after the amount of people being pinged by the NHS COVID-19 app left the service short-staffed LINK
UK: Here's the data for for the % C19 mechanical ventilation bed occupancy is of all C19 beds. This is really surprising. Given the avg age has dropped from 42 in the Jan/Feb peak, to 28.5 now, that MV is now @ 18% up from 14% then, wow... yet more evidence Delta's more vicious. I would have thought a younger cohort with Alpha would be hospitalised less, need less O2 and MV. The data suggested Delta does more of all of these in the young, enough to make the avg higher despite the avg age being 13yr lower. Not good.
World: A FINAL WARNING TO HUMANITY FROM FORMER PFIZER CHIEF SCIENTIST MICHAEL YEADON LINK
UK: Covid cases will stay high for MONTHS after passing 100,000 in two weeks and a new lockdown may be needed by September, say experts LINK
World: Tom Frieden: The Delta variant appears to be more than two times more transmissible. One explanation is that that it's "stickier": the virus gets into your lungs more easily and then invades the lung cells more effectively.
Japan: Olympics-Czech Olympic team staff member tests positive for COVID-19 LINK
Vietnam: Vietnam reports 3,718 new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase on record
RUMINT: The biggest issue coming is the cold weather, the virus is aided by the cold whereas the UVB rays and the heat has no effect on it. So if we are having massive spread in the summer in the northern hemisphere then what happens when it hits 60F? Then the 40’s then 20’s. Very depressing.
Netherlands: 964 people got infected at an outdoor music festival, despite admission being granted only to those who were vaccinated, tested negative, or were infected previously LINK
World: WHO warns of a new, more deadly “COVID-19” mutation: Lambda. LINK

London records zero Covid-19 daily deaths for first time in six months as cases soar elsewhere in Europe Public Health England (PHE) statistics from Sunday showed no fatalities within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test in the UK capital, while the country as a whole recorded 19 deaths. The last daily record of zero deaths in the capital was on September 14 before a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic struck Britain. The data for Covid-19 deaths is usually lower on Mondays due to a lag in authorities reporting numbers over the weekend but the latest stats will be seen as a positive sign given the region was recording more than 200 daily deaths in January. The news comes as England’s “stay at home” order was lifted Monday and Covid-19 restrictions were eased, allowing two households or groups of up to six people to meet outdoors. The country has been in full national lockdown since January 4, after a new, more transmissible variant of coronavirus was discovered in southeast England. Outdoor sports facilities such as tennis courts, swimming pools and golf courses have been permitted to reopen, and organized outdoor sports with an unlimited number of people have been given the thumbs up. Weddings are no longer limited to exceptional circumstances but are only allowed a maximum of six attendees. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged caution amid growing cases elsewhere in Europe. “I know how much people have missed the camaraderie and competition of organized sport, and how difficult it has been to restrict physical activities — especially for children,” Johnson said. “I know many will welcome the increased social contact, with groups of 6 or two households now also able to meet outdoors.” The UK has the highest Covid-19 death toll in Europe, with more than 126,000 fatalities, according to a Johns Hopkins University (JHU) tally. While Monday marks the most significant easing in England since schools returned on March 8, many businesses remain shuttered, people are still being encouraged to work from home where possible, and travel abroad is still prohibited. The rules are set to be relaxed further in coming weeks provided the UK vaccination program continues unhindered and infection rates don’t surge. More than 30 million people across the UK have now received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine and the country’s National Health Service is preparing to administer millions of second doses in the coming weeks, according to the UK Department of Health. The next stage of lockdown easing is due to take place no sooner than April 12 when non-essential retail will be allowed to reopen. At the same time, restaurants and pubs will be able to serve people outdoors. Germany considers new measures Elsewhere in Europe, infection rates are soaring amid a third pandemic wave. On Sunday German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested additional measures may be needed in the country to halt the ongoing spread of Covid-19. The number of coronavirus cases in Germany now stands at 2,782,273 after an additional 9,872 instances were identified, the German agency for disease control and prevention said Monday. The Robert Koch Institute said the country’s death toll stands at 75,913 — including 43 new cases in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile the seven-day incidence rate now stands at 134.4 per 100,000 inhabitants. In a rare interview with public broadcaster ARD on Sunday night, Merkel stood by her apology over proposing and then scrapping Easter restrictions, admitting mistakes had been made. Last week, the longtime leader walked back on her plan to impose a new hard five-day lockdown over Easter. Although there are restrictions on social contact and gatherings, businesses will now only be closed as usual on the public holidays of Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. As Covid-19 cases rise across Germany, however, Merkel said that in addition to testing, further measures were being considered and could be introduced soon. “For me, contact restrictions, restrictions to go out, are very important means to stop the exponential growth of the virus. Plus to increase testing in schools twice a week and the industry, where I am not yet content with the current enthusiasm, where I have said clearly that we then need to legislate, and soon,” Merkel said. Merkel deflected a question over whether she’d send Germany into another hard lockdown, instead suggesting that more people needed to work from home and that more testing for those going into work was needed. She added: “We have to ensure that schools can only open if they can test twice a week, although even twice is not a lot.” More than 75,000 people have died in Germany from Covid-19, according to JHU data. Doctors sound alarm in Paris France is now entering a decisive week, with the country under pressure from a rising number of patients in intensive care. Doctors warned Sunday that hospitals in Paris face being overwhelmed and are preparing to triage patients in the next two weeks as a result of the critical conditions. In an op-ed, published in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, 41 intensive care (ICU) and emergency doctors wrote that in the next two weeks “we are almost certain about the number of ICU beds that will be needed and we already know that our capacities will be exceeded at the end of this period.” The doctors pointed out a “glaring mismatch between needs and available resources” in what they call a “disaster medicine” situation. “We will be forced to select which patients get access to the ICUs and which do not in order to save as many lives as possible. This triage will involve all patients, Covid and non-Covid, especially regarding access to critical care for adult patients,” they wrote. The Parisian doctors wrote in their op-ed they had “never experienced such a situation, even during the worst terrorist attacks in recent years,” referring to the November 2015 terror attacks in Paris that killed 130 people and wounded 494. There were 1,429 patients in ICU in the Ile-de-France region (where Paris is located) as of Saturday night, which accounts for more than 124% of the number of ICU beds in the region, according to data published by the French health authority, Santé Publique France. The pandemic has killed more than 94,000 people in France, according to JHU. The French coronavirus strategy led by President Emmanuel Macron, who is up for re-election next year, has so far resisted a third nationwide lockdown — against the advice of his Scientific Council — because of the impact it would have on mental health and the economy, Macron has said. Instead, the government has favored a 7 p.m. curfew, as well as regional “reinforced health restrictions,” in place in 19 areas. While schools remain open in these vicinities, non-essential stores have closed and the movement of people has been limited to a 10-kilometer (six-mile) radius unless they have compelling business or health reasons to travel further. Medical workers have urged the French government in recent weeks to impose stronger national restrictions, in light of the more contagious B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant, which was first identified in the UK and is now dominant in France. At the end of a tense EU summit on Thursday night, the French president denied any failure in his decision not to implement a lockdown at the end of January. “We didn’t have the explosion of cases that every model predicted,” he said in a press conference. “There won’t be a mea culpa from me. I don’t have remorse and won’t acknowledge failure,” Macron added. A defense council is expected to decide on a possible tightening of measures on Wednesday.
