Viral shedding by asymptomatic people may represent a subset of total infections, but uncertainty remains regarding how much they contribute to totals.
Viral shedding may antedate symptoms, usually two days.
Viral titers are highest in the earliest phases of infection, 1-2 days before the onset of symptoms, and then in the first 4-6 days of illness in patients without immunosuppression.
When Is COVID-19 the Most Contagious?
Researchers estimate that people who get infected with COVID-19 can spread it to others 2-3 days before symptoms start and are most contagious 1-2 days before they feel sick.
&
How long after exposure will you test positive for COVID-19?
Depending on which COVID-19 variant you've been exposed to, you may test positive 3-5 days later. If you've been exposed to the virus but don't have any symptoms, wait for 5 days before you get tested. If you test too early and you do have COVID-19, you may falsely test negative.

In today's the-world-is-a-flaming-disaster-and-healthcare-is-fucked news: the hospital I work for dropped its mask mandate today for healthcare professionals and patients/patrons alike except for a "few" departments. We treat a lot of pregnant folks and akrejalwkerjlawkejrlawralwkerjlawkejrpro31027497-34831 *twitches and falls to the floor in error error error*

tumblr just nuked @milf-adjacent's blog with zero warning, no explanation from staff or e-mail whatsoever. her blog has been a vital resource for documenting COVID-19, and she did nothing ban worthy. she seems to be another target of the transmisogyny being carried out by staff.

I don't understand people who think wearing masks only applies to COVID. As soon as their COVID test comes back negative they stop wearing a mask and it's like... it's not COVID but you're still sick, I would have thought we learned something about the transmission of disease from the pandemic we all lived through.

Accepting that we are all going to repeatedly contract a virus that causes cumulative vascular damage, is accepting that the most vulnerable among us will die. Layered covid mitigations, starting with wearing a high quality respirator, says no to preventable infections and "acceptable" death.
Image Description: Dark grey and red text over a grey scale background. The background is an image of an N95 respirator. The dark grey text reads, "Say NO to preventable infections". Red text offset behind the grey text reads, "Acceptable death".

[image id: two screenshots of four tweets by user lisa_iannattone on Twitter, posted on 19 December 2022 at 1:14 p.m., reading sequentially: "It's absolutely wild to me that we're pretending that the higher than average number of respiratory tract infections and the pandemic of adults with pneumonia this year is not a warning sign of immune impairment. This is literally how immunodeficiency would present. In clinical practice, we we want to screen for the possibility of an undiagnosed underlying immunodeficiency syndrome, "how many respiratory infections do you get in an average year?" and "have you had pneumonia more than once?" are the 2 first questions we ask. There's been more pneumonias among my healthy adult friends & acquaintances in the last 6 months than among my immunosuppressed patients in the last 6 years. Something is clearly off. And healthy adults with pneumonia is not a viral transmission dynamics issue. This thread blew up and some people aren't sure if I'm suggesting immunity debt. Definitely not. Staying healthy doesn't make you sick, pathogens do. As for the immunity "gap", it's likely a contributing factor but doesn't explain adults with pneumonia. It's SARS2 I'm worried about.
end image id]
hey, the pandemic is not over. wear a mask.
in case this is unclear, immunocompromised, immunosuppressed, and other disabled people are not getting sick the same way as healthy adults because they are masking the fuck up and/or still largely being forced to isolate, while many many “healthy” adults are not. just because you are healthy doesn’t mean you are immune to long-term effects from covid. anyone can become disabled at any time. immunity debt is not real.
do your part to protect yourself and others. not wearing a mask is worse than ableism. It’s disablist.
Please at least wear masks in public indoor, and crowded outdoor spaces. Make public spaces safe and accessible for everyone.

It’s kind of insane (and unfortunately predictable) how western society acts when it comes to public health, specially after the pandemic. The amount of times I see people not wearing masks when they’re visibly sick or see people say they don’t want to wear masks because it’s uncomfortable to wear… you know what’s actually very uncomfortable and outdoes your feelings about wearing masks? BEING SICK.
Seriously, it should not be controversial or considered weird to wear masks when you’re sick; it should be THE BARE MINIMUM TO WEAR A MASK WHEN YOU’RE SICK, COVID OR NOT. How any of these people are able to go outside while sick and not care about other people’s health is insane to me. Despite the obvious fact that being sick affects everyone’s health, what about the people who are most vulnerable?
Wearing masks while sick should be the norm and honestly we as a collective should shame people who are sick and not wearing a mask in public.

(via COVID levels reach highs ahead of holiday travel season)
Why it matters:
Beyond the tens of thousands of continued annual deaths & high chance of complications in the acute phase for elderly & immunocompromised patients, Long COVID (COVID-induced chronic illness, brain damage, and/or disability that can last weeks, months, or become permanent) is still a major issue that can affect anyone, has no cure, and no effective treatments.
Scientists that study Long COVID are still masking in public indoor spaces:
Tumblr media
What you can do:
Wear a fitted KN95 or N95 with no gaps. COVID is airborne; if your mask has any gaps (like surgical masks) you are pulling it into your lungs.
Isolate ~5 days prior to gatherings and test correctly right before the event (same day).
A negative test is not a 100% assurance you’re clear. It’s common to be asymptomatic and test negative for 4-5 days post infection, until viral load peaks.
Air filtration and ventilation make indoor environments safer. Use HEPA filters on High; open windows.
Cancel plans if needed.

Hiii I hope youre doing alright. <3 I remember you mentioning you use a certain mouth wash to help with covid protection and Im just wondering what mouth wash it was? Im not sure what ingredients to look for so I figured Id ask. Tysm for the help! I hope this isnt too annoying to respond to. 😅🙈
Hi I love asks like these bc I love sharing information and this is straightforward n easy to answer!! I hope you don't mind me answering publicly bc I think more people should know about this!!
Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is the mouthwash ingredient that kills covid virus in the mouth and upper throat!
Ideally paired with other preventatives, it can drastically reduce risk since it reduces the amount of live virus at the point of infection. I use it right after being around people I don't live with, and during long events I have a travel bottle in my purse to refresh every couple hours. I use this mouthwash (under $4 for a big bottle): https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Alcohol-Free-Multi-Action-Antiseptic-Oral-Rinse-Zesty-Mint-33-8-fl-oz/26441079
(If you end up buying it elsewhere, double check for "Cetylpyridinium chloride" in the active ingredients. Some search results are misleading.)
Nose sprays can also help mitigate covid risk: https://www.okdoomer.io/nose-sprays-offer-a-last-line-of-defense/?ref=ok-doomer-newsletter
Fun fact, even if you DO get covid, studies have shown the fewer virus particles you're exposed to when you first get infected, the less severe the infection itself is likely to be for you!!

#maybe im being pessimistic abt this. im not saying u should wear a mask every waking moment of your life god knows i cant#but also. hell no i dont trust u if anything i distrust u ppl even more after how things played out for the past 3 years#like there are situations where it might be inevitable catching covid. most of my family members are nurses and in constant contact#but there are also a ton of ways to make that risk low as possible like masking and wearing a face shield and having sanitizer#for me its not enough to just say oh we're in a small group and we're all vaccinated#motherfucker your kid is sick from preschool EVERY TIME WE VISIT. of course ill be wearing a mask she gave me covid last year#also no the fuck it isnt seasonal the cases go up because lack of caution makes the virus spread and mutate especially around times when#ppl gather. add that with virus transmission in cold weather and its a matter of different factors increasing the risk of spread#im also tired of ppl not understanding that i wont be their responsibility if i do get sick. maybe they can help me recover#but at the end of the day the risk of death and long term health is all on me. i cant change that#the govt barely gives me accommodations what makes u think theyll do anything for every individual case of long covid or worse#im so tired. im so tired#i dont even know if its possible to want this to be over anymore i just wish we didnt have to deal with this in the first place#ALSO COUGH INTO YOUR SLEEVE SERIOUSLY HOW IS THIS SO HARD TO REMEMBER#oh its just a cold/dry throat its not like i have covid or anything. no!! its basic hygiene!!! how is this so hard to understand!!!!!!!!!!#and no this isnt abt whether people have the means to protect themselves this is me bitching abt my relatives not taking me seriously#vent#my art#myart#doodles#covid 19

I still mask because:
I don't want any of my disabilities to get worse
I'm still young and I want a long future. I really *do* want to live my life
I'm afraid of the unseen damage that could be done to my body that medical professionals would brush off or minimize
People seem to care less about getting people sick now (less covering mouths when coughing/sneezing, coming to gatherings sick without telling anyone, minimizing flus and vomiting bugs as no big deal, etc). Even if it's not covid, I have a deep fear of sickness and I don't want to catch *anything*.
Being covid-concious is barely a thing in my country
I hope even one person will see me and think about wearing a mask themself
😷
