India was able to save more than 3.4 million lives by undertaking a nationwide Covid-19 vaccination campaign at an unprecedented scale, according to a Stanford University report.
The campaign also yielded a positive economic impact by preventing a loss of $18.3 billion, the working paper by Stanford University and Institute for Competitiveness titled 'Healing the Economy: Estimating the Economic Impact on India's Vaccination and Related Issues' released by Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday suggested.
According to the Stanford report, the direct and total impact of vaccination varied from about $ 1.03 billion to $ 2.58 billion if minimum wages are considered within the age distribution category.
“The same, however, varied from about $3.49 billion to $ 8.7 billion if GDP per person employed (constant) is considered. The cumulative lifetime earnings of the lives saved through vaccination (in the working age group) rolled up to $ 21.5 billion. Moreover, since vaccination also saved the lives of the elderly, this indirectly helped prevent the health infrastructure from getting overwhelmed and thereby allowing for a more judicious use of the existing health infrastructure,” the report suggested.
Mandaviya said much before Covid-19 was declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in January 2020, processes and structures to focus dedicatedly on various facets of the pandemic management were put in place...
The Stanford working paper refers to a Lancet modelling study which estimated that in India around 3.4 million deaths were prevented by vaccination in the year 2021, an estimate based on officially reported deaths in India.
The paper also highlighted the impact of the lockdown and referred to the health ministry’s statistical analysis that the Covid-19 tally could have reached about two lakh (0.2 million) without lockdown by April 11, 2020.
Due to lockdown measures, the actual cases only went up to about 7,500 by April 11, 2020, making a case for the lockdown stronger."

Politico notes that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen talked about the possible dangers of TikTok during a debate this evening in Maastricht with the front-runners for the EU's 2024 election. Considering the example set by the US, where TikTok faces a national ban unless sold by its parent firm, ByteDance, she did not rule out an EU ban.
Von von Leyen emphasized the apparent risks by pointing out that the European Commission was the first global organization to forbid TikTok on business phones. "We know exactly the danger of TikTok," she continued.
The EU is presently looking into the app for potential legal violations, including a program that gives users gift cards in exchange for watching videos, which might be against EU laws prohibiting features that make apps more addictive for young users.

Bill Nelson claims that the United States is competing in a race to the moon against China.
Nelson: To begin with, I rarely deliver speeches on China, but I frequently encounter inquiries about the country. The reason it holds significance is because I am well aware of China's actions on Earth's surface. For instance, they have claimed ownership of a portion of the South China Sea, namely the Spratly Islands, and declared that others should keep away.
I prefer that they don't reach the South Pole, as it is a restricted region where we believe the water is located. The South Pole is filled with craters, making it difficult to find suitable landing spots. I don't want them to arrive there and claim ownership, telling others to stay away.
It should be done for the global community, for the advancement of science. That's why I believe it's crucial for us to be the first ones to achieve it.

KFC Malaysia has temporarily closed its locations nationwide, citing difficult economic conditions. Local media had earlier reported that the boycotts stemmed from the fast food chain's alleged ties to Israel. Malaysia, a country with a large Muslim population, is a devoted supporter of the Palestinian cause. Like in some other Muslim countries, boycott movements against Israel's military campaign in Gaza have targeted certain Western fast-food brands there.

21 cases of Covid-19 subvariant JN. 1 detected in India, authorities on high alert
With the fresh cases of coronavirus subvariant JN.1 emerging in India, Indian authorities have been on high alert. The subvariant JN. 1 is being investigated by the scientific community as the authorities work on curbing its spread already. As per NITI Aayog member (health) Dr V K Paul, as of now, 21 cases of COVID-19 JN.1 sub-variant have been detected in the country. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is focused on the genome sequencing of the variant.
Out of the 21 cases, 19 cases have been detected in Goa while Kerala and Maharashtra have recorded one each.
First found in late 2023, the JN.1 (BA.2.86.1.1) variant of COVID-19 is a descendant of the BA.2.86 lineage (Pirola) of SARS-CoV-2. The BA.2.86 lineage (Pirola) first emerged in August 2023 and showed more than 30 mutations in the spike (5) protein unlike the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XBB lineages. The mutations make the variant highly risky with a high potential for immune evasion.
The JN.1 subvariant has been classified as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization.
Head of Pulmonary Medicine at Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. Rohit Kumar said, “COVID is an RNA virus that changes its form from time to time, and new variants of it emerge. And now a new variant has emerged, which has been named JN.1. However, not a single case has come to light in the capital, Delhi yet.”
"We are on alert, keeping an eye on the Corona cases. Testing of patients is also being done, and the patients who are coming positive are also being sent for genome sequencing. So that new variants can also be detected, but till now no case of new variants has been reported in Delhi," Dr Kumar said.
"If there is a sore throat, cough, cold, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, consult the doctor immediately. Especially those already suffering from respiratory diseases and asthma patients need to take special care. The doctor mentioned that during this season, individuals with serious diseases should be more careful, as those dying due to Covid often have pre-existing serious conditions such as heart disease and diabetes," he added.
