Teacher to rockstar | K.K. Shailaja on her new book ‘My Life as a Comrade’
It is my experience that interviewees are rarely interested in you. Occasionally, at the end of the meeting, they may lean back and ask a couple of cursory questions about your work. But, on a Wednesday evening at the Kerala House in Delhi, K.K. Shailaja had barely walked into the room before I was peppered with half a dozen questions. Where was I from, what did my parents do, do I have children,…

“You didn’t fail—your idea failed. Try something new.”
Last week, David and I were invited to be delegates at a G20 event at Guru Nanak Dev University, which is just up the road from Khalsa College.
One of the panels at this event at GNDU was on entrepreneurship. While this is not exactly my field, I am glad I was compelled (by my status as a delegate) to attend. One of the panelists, an esteemed professor of business from Mumbai, offered the thought that I have chosen as my title.
I would say that my idea—as conceived—has failed.
Without getting into too much detail, I will simply say that several factors have contributed to this: my own naivety at what could be accomplished with a group of actors with whom I do not share a common language (unlike Kerala—where I did my first Fulbright), some particularly nasty departmental politics that became clear to David and me a few weeks after arrival, a lack of communication concerning hindrances to my project work plan, and (what I perceive) as the global effects of COVID on the current college age student. One toxic presence has done more than anything else to dismantle what I planned to accomplish. I have kept quiet about this in my blog and hoped for the best.
I am disheartened, but I also need to look at what my essential goals were for this project:
• To connect young people with survivors of Partition in order to foster understanding about the experiences of those who came before them
• To guide a group of young artists in creating original material based on interviews with Partition survivors
• To provide a way for said young artists to share their original work with an audience.
All this will be accomplished.
• I have accompanied students on interviews with people in their 80’s and 90’s who survived Partition, and witnessed the effect their stories and these connections have on my students. I have been deeply moved by the experience of sitting in the presence of these survivors.
• David and I are working with these young actors to create, albeit slowly, original monologues out of those interviews. I understand that students at Khalsa College (and perhaps more widely in India) are not as accustomed to writing their own material, so this is a big “ask” we are making. Many are rising to the challenge beautifully. And some very generous translators have helped us to understand what is being written.
• And we will have a sharing. It will not be a full-scale production, as we first envisioned. Given the amount of rehearsal time that has been taken from us due to various roadblocks- a full production would not be possible. We have been given a goal of the first week in April (before exam preparation begins). With that date in mind, we had to let go of the idea of a full production last week. But we will have an invited sharing at the college, and I also hope to have a lecture/demonstration at the Partition Museum and a local cultural center. I need to remind myself that if David had not been able to accompany me, these sharings would have likely been all I would have been able to offer.
I am turning my focus to things I can control (and my little living space has been getting daily cleanings-- this seems to be my way of gaining some control.) Following the advice, I am "trying something new."
• I am booking performances of The Belle of Amherst at several colleges in Kolkata, one in Assam, and (hopefully) one theatre in Nepal.
• I have been awarded a regional travel grant to spend two weeks teaching voice and speech at an actor training program in Nepal.
• And I have been invited to serve on the panel to interview Fulbright applicants among Tibetan immigrants in Dharamshala in May.
I have met a lot of great people here. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. And my students are absolutely lovely people. When I am with them (those who show up) my spirit cannot resist being lifted. So-- I’ll share a few pictures of these exuberant, brave young people—and move on. The idea failed. I did not fail. And I believe these young people will take something meaningful away from this experience—as I know David and I will.
I “owe” you all a post about our wonderful return to Kerala. Maybe now that I have shared the not-so-pleasant, I can go back and share those beautiful memories!

Maybe this has something to do with it
MARUTHONKARA, India: It was more than two weeks before doctors even realised what they were treating, the fourth outbreak in five years of the lethal, brain-swelling Nipah virus in India’s Kerala region. By then, hundreds of people had been exposed to the bat pathogen.
Halting the disease’s spread required deploying an army of workers, who put this village and eight others on partial lockdown for two weeks, surveyed more than 53,000 houses for signs of illness and tracked down 1,200 people who had come into contact with infected patients, according to the World Health Organization.
Ultimately, six people were infected, and two of them died. Though Kerala’s response to contain the outbreak drew international praise, the quick spread of the virus and its impact on tens of thousands of people illustrate what many scientists and world health leaders say is a weakness in public health policy: relying solely on disease containment. Governments, they say, must also control land development and protect animal habitats in areas where there is high risk of pathogens leaping from animals to people, a phenomenon known as spillover.
[...]
Reporters compared ecological conditions across the globe from 2002 through 2020 with those that existed at the time of past spillovers, identifying 9 million sq km – covering 6% of the Earth’s land mass – where conditions were ripe for pathogens to jump from bats to humans. Nearly 1.8 billion people lived in those jump zones in 2020, an increase of 57% since 2002.
The analysis focused on bats because they are linked to many of the deadliest disease outbreaks of the past half century, including the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Though its specific source is still unknown, the virus that causes Covid-19 is related to coronaviruses found in some horseshoe bats, a type common in tropical Asia. Kerala is one of the likeliest places on earth for spillover to occur, the analysis showed.
[...]
Nipah, which comes from bats and causes a lethal, brain-swelling fever in humans, has been linked to the deaths of two dozen people in Kerala since its first, surprise appearance here in 2018. A 1998-1999 epidemic in Malaysia killed at least 105. Hundreds more have died in near-annual outbreaks in Bangladesh since 2001. Nipah is classified as a priority pathogen by the WHO because of its potential to trigger an epidemic. There is no vaccine to prevent infection and no treatment to cure it.
edit: I guess not if the ban is months old
seriously, what the fuck is this about?
they've just outright banned the tag for an indian state that's home to over 34 million people

Middle East Complementary And Alternative Medicine Market To Reach USD 51.40 Billion By 2030
Middle East Complementary And Alternative Medicine Market Growth & Trends
The Middle East complementary and alternative medicine market size is expected to reach USD 51.40 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 22.77% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) include remedies or treatments that are used instead of or as supplements with conventional allopathic treatments. The various types of complementary and alternative medicines include remedies based on traditional alternative medicine & botanicals, mind-healing techniques, body-healing therapies, external energy, and sensory healing.
The Middle Eastern region and its cultures offer lucrative opportunities to players in the complementary and alternative medicine market, owing to a history of commonly practiced spiritual healing techniques and herbal medicine, such as Unani, for the treatment of several disorders. As a result, traditional practitioners are a vital part of disease management in the region. Traditional alternative medicines and botanicals include naturopathic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and traditional Arabic medicine.
Due to the increasing burden of chronic diseases and the rising popularity of alternative medicines, several new healing centers are being launched in this space in the Middle East. For instance, in July 2021, the Lootah Group of Companies, in partnership with Kerala's Santhigiri Group, launched the Santhigiri Holistic Healthcare Centre in Dubai, which offers a range of complementary and alternative medicine varieties such as acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and yoga. Such centers are likely to boost the market over the forecast period.
The Middle East region has witnessed significant social and economic impact due to the coronavirus pandemic. The government authorities in this region are keen on promoting the use of traditional alternatives in COVID-19 treatment, however, it is imperative to cater to the conventional research standards devised for all the other drug candidates. In addition, in the recent past, WHO has also acknowledged and stated that CAM exhibits several benefits, that may assist in the effective, safe, and maximum at-home management of COVID-19 symptoms.
Furthermore, an increase in the geriatric population in the region is expected to boost the market growth in the region. According to WHO, in 2050, 80% of older people (above 60) will be living in low- and middle-income countries. Commonly, older people are increasingly choosing CAM treatments, especially acupuncture, herbal products, bloodletting, medical massage, cauterization, and religious rituals. In addition, certain disease conditions such as back pain, insomnia, Alzheimer’s disease, and colds are associated with the use of complementary and alternative medicine among older people.
On the other hand, key challenges faced by the Middle Eastern population using complementary and alternative medicine, are the lack of well-documented data pertaining to the efficacy of CAM therapeutic interventions, lack of robust support from doctors, physicians, and professionals toward incorporation of CAM in conventional treatment options, and fewer number of CAM training programs. However various conferences are being held in the region on complementary and alternative medicine to overcome the challenges associated to CAM therapies. For instance, CAM therapies 2022 conference organized by Pulsus is scheduled on the fifth and sixth of December in Dubai, UAE. Such platforms in the region are helping to share, promote and encourage advancements in complementary & alternative medicine.

By intervention, the traditional alternative medicine and botanicals segment held the dominant share owing to a history of commonly practiced spiritual healing techniques and herbal medicine, such as Unani, for the treatment of several disorders

By distribution channel, the direct distribution segment held a larger share in 2023. This is attributed to the high rates of self-prescribed use of complementary and alternative medicine products, particularly botanicals and traditional medicines
Saudi Arabia dominated the global market in 2023 due to the growing popularity of CAM coupled with the presence of government bodies is expected to drive market growth in Saudi Arabia
The UAE is projected to grow considerably in the future due to the increasing popularity of CAM in the country. For instance, according to a survey conducted by DHCC (Dubai Healthcare City), around 48% of the country’s people tried CAM and around 55% were happy with the results

Check Reviews and Ratings: Apps like Uber and Ola show user reviews, which help in picking a reliable driver. For local operators, you can search online reviews or ask locals for recommendations.

Titan vs. Kalyan Jewellers: A Deep Dive into Share Price Trends—A Comparative Analysis
Titan Company Limited and Kalyan Jewellers India Limited are two well-known names in the Indian jewellery and watchmaking industry, each with its own brand identity and market presence. A comparison of Titan's share price trends to those of Kalyan Jewellers provides valuable insights into investor sentiment, market positioning, and the companies' growth trajectories in the context of the dynamic Indian stock market.
Titan, a part of the Tata Group, has established itself as a leading player in the jewellery, watch, and eyewear sectors. The Titan share price has historically reflected the company's robust growth strategy, innovative product offerings, and strong brand equity. Titan's share price movements are often seen as indicators of its operational excellence, expansion initiatives, and overall health of the consumer goods sector in India.
On the other side, Kalyan Jewellers Share Price tells the story of a company that started from a single showroom in Kerala and has grown into a pan-India and international jewellery brand. The share price of these jewellers has been subject to market dynamics influenced by their expansion strategies, the volatility of the gold price, and the changing preferences of Indian consumers towards jewellery purchases.
When analysing the share price trends of these two giants, several factors come into play. First, market sentiment towards the jewellery sector, influenced by economic conditions, gold prices, and consumer spending patterns, plays a significant role. Both companies have faced the challenges of fluctuating gold prices and economic slowdowns, which are reflected in their share price volatility.
Moreover, the impact of regulatory changes, including taxation policies and hallmarking standards, on the jewellery industry has been a critical factor affecting investor confidence and, consequently, share prices. For instance, policy measures aimed at formalising the gold market and promoting transparency have generally been positive for organised players like Titan and Kalyan Jewellers, as reflected in their market performance.
The performance of Titan and Kalyan Jewellers in the stock market also highlights their respective business strategies. Titan's diversified portfolio beyond jewellery, into watches and eyewear, offers it a hedge against the volatility of the gold market. This diversification is often cited as a reason for Titan's consistent market performance and investor confidence. In contrast, Kalyan Jewellers, with its focus primarily on jewellery, has embarked on an aggressive expansion plan, both domestically and internationally, to capture a larger market share.
Furthermore, the adoption of digital and e-commerce platforms by both companies, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been a key factor influencing investor sentiment. The shift towards online sales channels has not only opened new revenue streams but also expanded the customer base beyond traditional retail boundaries.

New AI Technology helps India emerge as the World’s Technology
Forget chai and samosas; India is serving up a sizzling dish, and that is none other than the new AI technology! Yes, the land of vibrant colors and ancient wisdom is fast becoming a tech hotspot, and new AI technology is the secret ingredient. Brace yourself for a journey through India’s AI adventure, where algorithms dance with chai masala and robots dream in Bollywood beats.
Table of Contents
Tech Tiffin: A Feast of Talent and Innovation
Spice Route to Success: A Blend of Policy and Investment
Curry-fying Every Corner: New AI Technology Across Industries
Challenges with a Chutney of Solutions
The Future is Masala-fied: A Taste of What’s to Come
Conclusion
Tech Tiffin: A Feast of Talent and Innovation
India has the brains, and boy, does it use them! India has the third-largest pool of IT skills in the world when compared to the IT hub of the world. This makes India an ideal breeding ground for new AI technology. Engineers create algorithms like magic tricks, while startups pop up like chai stalls around the neighborhood, each bursting with creative ideas. From healthcare solutions identifying diseases with eagle-eyed precision to chatbots that speak the native language like your bestie. The new AI technology is brewing up a storm of technological advancement in India.
Spice Route to Success: A Blend of Policy and Investment
India is not simply putting turmeric into the AI pot and hoping for the best. The government has a Michelin-star recipe, with initiatives inspiring the business hub of India such as the National AI Strategy and the Digital India program adding texture. On one hand, these initiatives create a conducive atmosphere for new AI technology to thrive, and on the other, the investors—they’re like foodies, pouring in billions to sustain this new AI technology-driven feast. What was the result? A hot ecosystem of hybrid workforce where startups thrive and ideas get funded faster than you can say “baingan bharta!“
Curry-fying Every Corner: New AI Technology Across Industries
Not to place all its eggs in one basket, the new AI technology is altering the role of IT in every sector. From Mumbai’s hectic streets to Kerala’s tranquil pastures. For instance, farmers employ AI-powered drones to monitor crops, physicians use AI algorithms to diagnose ailments, and even the old game of cricket is given a technological boost with AI-powered coaching. It’s like a delectable thali, with each dish featuring its own distinct AI flavor, isn’t it?
Challenges with a Chutney of Solutions
Of all, no technological journey concludes without a few mishaps, and the technological advancement in India is no exception. Data privacy problems, moral dilemmas, and a shortage of skilled workers are among the obstacles confronting India’s technology growth. But, just as a skilled cook deals with tricky spices, India has a chutney of remedies in its arsenal. Robust data protection rules, code of conduct frameworks, and measures to close the skill gap are keeping the AI flame burning resiliently.
Indian technology is backed by government funding. The Aarogya Setu app, built by a government-backed consortium, is an AI-powered app that tracks COVID-19 contacts, has over 200 million users, and has contributed significantly to India’s pandemic management. Another such instance is eNAM, the National Agriculture Market, a government-initiated platform that uses AI to connect farmers directly with buyers, eliminating middlemen and improving farmer incomes by an average of 25%.
The Future is Masala-fied: A Taste of What’s to Come
India’s AI adventure is merely at its inception. In the past, India has used AI to track COVID—the infamous Arogya Setu app. eNAM is another AI revolution that transformed agriculture. Among the budding startups is Niramai Health, which uses AI-powered thermal imaging to detect breast cancer early, reaching 5 million women in rural areas without access to conventional mammograms. CropIn is another ag-tech company that combines AI and satellite imagery to provide personalized farm advice, increasing crop yields by up to 30% for millions of farmers across India.
From Jugaad to Juggernaut, India’s AI is joining hands with global technology. India-US Joint AI Development Centre, established in 2023, focuses on developing AI solutions for healthcare, agriculture, and disaster management, with potential benefits for both nations. Then there is the India-UK AI BRIDGE Program, which fosters joint research projects between Indian and UK researchers, leading to breakthroughs in areas like climate change mitigation and intelligent urban planning.
The future seems as promising as a plate of pani puri. Consider AI-powered smart cities that regulate traffic and pollution, individualized education suited to each student’s needs, and even robots that do bhangra with you!
Conclusion
As they say, the sky’s the limit, and India has the spice to make them all sizzle. So, the next time you envisage India, acknowledge that it is more than just temples and tigers. It’s also a country where AI aspirations simmer and the scent of invention permeates the air. Prepare for a world where chai meets code as India leads the way in serving up the future, one artificially intelligent creation at a time! I hope you had a fun and informative time learning about the latest technological exploits of India. Stay tuned as we bring in more exciting tech news at The Tech Insider.

From The Kerala Story to Zara Hatke Zara Bachke: 5 films of 2023 that haven’t arrived on OTT yet
Films like The Kerala Story and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke attained success at the box office but have still not arrived on any streaming platform yet.
The arrival of OTT happened in India almost a decade back. But the rise in watching online content boomed from 2020 onwards as the cinema halls were shut during that time to combat COVID-19 pandemic. Even after the cinema halls opened and started running to packed capacity, a section of the audience has been eagerly awaiting the release of some films on OTT. Every noteworthy film has been arriving on OTT eight weeks after its release. But there are some films who haven’t arrived on streaming platforms even months after their theatrical release.
The subject of this Rajkumar Santoshi directorial was enough to generate interest – Mahatma Gandhi and his killer Nathuram Godse having a debate over their respective ideologies. However, it literally went unnoticed at the box office because of an absence of a big star and, more importantly, the makers deciding to release it alongside Shah Rukh Khan’s biggie Pathaan, which became a runaway blockbuster. But there is enough interest in the film because, as mentioned above, for its subject. Surprisingly, there is no news about its OTT release yet.
The Kerala Story
The Sudipto Sen directorial is the biggest surprise on this list. Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, Sonia Balani, the movie told the story of young girls being lured into relationships by evil men in order to get them converted to Islam. Despite not a single big star associated with it, it went onto earn a mammoth Rs. 242.20 crores. Hence, it remains a mystery as to why it hasn’t arrived on OTT yet.
Zara Hatke Zara Bachke
This is another major surprise on the list. The Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan starrer looked like an OTT film but the makers released it in theatres. It became a surprise hit of the year as it went onto earn a very impressive Rs. 88 crores at the box office. Despite it being over six months since the film released in theatres, it still hasn’t got a release on any streaming platform as yet.
The Lady Killer
Directed by Ajay Bahl, the film had decent face value because of its lead cast of Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar. But The Lady Killer got a tiny release in theatres and that too without any publicity and promotions. Normally, this happens when the makers are more interested in its OTT release. However, three months after its miniscule release, the film hasn’t arrived on streaming yet.
Ganapath – A Hero Is Born
Filmmaker Vikas Bahl’s movie was in the news for it being a rare Bollywood movie to have a dystopian theme. It also had known actors like Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon and Amitabh Bachchan in pivotal roles. However, Ganapath – A Hero Is Born just bombed at the box office. More than three months after its theatrical release, it still hasn’t arrived on OTT. This is a surprise considering the popularity of its cast.

Vehicle Scrappage Policy
The Vehicle Scrappage Policy, launched on August 13, 2021, is a government-funded programme to replace old vehicles with modern & new vehicles on Indian roads. The policy is expected to reduce pollution, create job opportunities and boost demand for new vehicles. Several countries including the US, Germany, Canada and China have introduced vehicle scrappage policies to boost their respective automotive industries and curtail vehicular pollution. Large automakers are onboarding this policy by launching scrappage centres including CERO by Mahindra & Mahindra (2018) and Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu by Maruti Suzuki and Toyota (2019). This policy also supports India’s ‘Green India’ mission, as it creates space for a cleaner fleet of vehicles.

According to the new policy, commercial vehicles aged >15 years and passenger vehicles aged >20 years will have to be mandatorily scrapped if they do not pass the fitness and emission tests. The policy does not treat a vehicle as scrap just because of its age, but considers other factors such as quality of brakes, engine performance and others. The objective is to phase out old cars, reduce urban pollution levels and stimulate automotive sales, which continues to record slowdown amid India’s post-COVID recovery phase. Additionally, the vehicle scrappage policy is also said to be a part of a larger stimulus package majorly requested by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to stir their demand.
Under the policy, automated testing stations and scrapping facilities will be set up in phases. Currently, 75 stations are proposed under Phase 1; this count will gradually scale up to 450–500 stations across the country. The government has also welcomed private players to invest in setting up such stations through partnership with the state governments. The government also plans to set up 50–70 facilities for scrapping vehicles in the next 4–5 years. An automobile industry body—the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)—has urged the government to allow dealer workshops to function as inspection and certification stations, as establishing new ones may not be commercially viable and delay the policy developments and implementation.
The Vehicle Scrappage Policy extends many obvious benefits, besides pollution control and improved road safety factor. Union Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari has highlighted that raw materials derived from scrapped vehicles such as copper, rubber, steel, aluminium and plastic can be reused in new vehicles, which can help reduce the price of new vehicles and subsequently, boost sales.
Some incentives for scrapping old vehicles and buying new ones are as follows:
Manufacturers can give up to 5% discount for buying new vehicles
Zero registration fee for new vehicle purchase
Owners can receive scrap value equivalent of 4–6% of ex-showroom price of new vehicles
States can give up to 25% and 15% rebate on road tax for personal and commercial vehicles, respectively
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), India is home to 2.1 crore vehicles that are older than 20 years, with the highest number in Karnataka (39.4 lakh), followed by Delhi (36.1 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (26.2 lakh), Kerala (20.6 lakh), Tamil Nadu (15.9 lakh) and Punjab (15.3 lakh). The policy will likely result in the following projected gains:
30% boost for the Indian automobile industry, from the current Rs. 4.5 lakh crore (US$ 61.46 billion) turnover to Rs. 10 lakh crore (US$ 136.59 billion) over the coming years
Export component of Rs. 1.45 lakh crore (US$ 19.81 billion) in the current turnover is likely to go up to Rs. 3 lakh crore (US$ 40.98 billion)
Decrease India’s huge Rs. 10 lakh crore (US$ 136.59 billion) crude import bill
Attract new investments of ~Rs. 10,000 crore (US$ 1.37 billion) and create as many as 35,000 jobs
The Vehicle Scrappage Policy has been welcomed by most states. Most car dealers in Gujarat have expressed optimism at the new policy enforcements. Mr. Pranav Shah, Chairman, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) in Gujarat, believes that the scrappage policy will boost sales of new vehicles on the back of proposed discounts on new car purchases against vehicle scrappage certificates. Other experts in the industry have stated that the turnaround time of cars will reduce, generating more demand for new cars. The state of Maharashtra is outlining SOPs (that will be soon rolled out) for setting up digitised scrapping centers. The Delhi Government issued a public notice prohibiting plying of over 15-year-old petrol vehicles and over 10-year-old diesel vehicles. The owners of such vehicles have been advised to get their vehicles scrapped through authorized facilities at the earliest, failing which the vehicles can be impounded.
The Tamil Nadu govt. has reported mixed responses towards the scrappage policy, raising concerns of owners of second-hand or third-hand cars as they may have a tough time finding potential buyers. Additionally, some stakeholders from the state also believe that a well-maintained car fetches a good price irrespective of its age. Mr. Wilson Joseph of BRK Automobiles, who owns a used cars business in Chennai, expressed doubts over how the policy will cater to the second-hand cars market. The policy has received a similar response from lorry/truck owners in the state.
However, at a broader level, the policy has a good mix of incentives for new vehicle buyers and automotive dealers and hence, is anticipated to generate positive results in the near future. This will also pave the way for a whole new business segment—‘Scrappage Facility’—which will flourish in a well-organised manner. Additionally, the policy addresses the intent of all stakeholders from exporters, importers, car dealers, micro, small & medium enterprises (MSMEs), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end consumers. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, while introducing the policy stated, “The policy is an important link to achieve the circular economy of waste to wealth. It will also energise India's auto sector and metal sector under the principles of reuse, recycle and recover.” The Vehicle Scrappage Policy is expected to truly touch every aspect of the automobile industry in India, the result of which is expected to churn in the years to come.
