It all started in December of 2018, with a sneak peek on social media from the author and screenwriter of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, J.K. Rowling, who, after announcing the completion of her newest screenplay, posted the following phrase on her Twitter: “Rio de Janeiro had better brace itself.”
A month earlier, Rowling had already made a mention about 1930’s Rio de Janeiro in a tweet that led to curious speculation from Brazilian fans of the franchise: what did old Rio have to do with the creator of Harry Potter?
In the following weeks, it was discovered that the author had set her newest film creation in the marvelous city of Rio. The project’s production team, following her lead, began to plan trips to Brazil in order to film certain older areas of downtown Rio and use them as backgrounds for the 3rd episode film of the film series. And Brazil Production Services was the Brazilian production company chosen to head the production unit in Brazil of this international mega-blockbuster.
When Warner Brothers contacted BPS, the job at hand involved the mapping and scanning of dozens of buildings and areas in downtown Rio de Janeiro, where several buildings from the city’s colonial, imperial, and turn-of-the-century periods are located. This material would then be used by the film’s visual effects team to digitally reconstruct the city circa 1930 by way of computer graphics. The idea was to do something big, exploring the city’s beautiful backdrop that could transport the fans to a magical version of Rio de Janeiro of that time.
However, the coronavirus arrived in Brazil in March of 2020, causing the production plan and the script to undergo dramatic changes.
Actor Eddie Redmayne, in an interview, spoke about the final version of the film that was released worldwide in April 2022: “The whole section that is set in Bhutan was meant to be set in Brazil … we were meant to travel and go and shoot there. Then COVID hit.” The actor lamented the cancellation of Rio as a main location – and so did we at BPS…
And so, what was supposed to be an intricate shoot in Rio showcasing some of its most interesting architecture turned out to be a production with only one of these locations. This location was a quick shot at an iconic location in Rio, in which the magical community of the city celebrates the victory of Vicência, a character played by the Brazilian actress Maria Fernanda Cândido.
The location in question was none other than the big house at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, a world-renowned location with that also features Rio’s famous statue of Christ the Redeemer in the background.
The beautiful house was scanned by the BPS team using LIDAR technology, which, according to the company’s Executive Manager Valéria Costa, is a tool widely used for building digital environments nowadays. The technology captures and measures properties of reflected light falling upon structures and, from that data, accurately documents a building’s 3D characteristics, providing the post-production team with high quality raw material to work on for the creation of digital backgrounds.
Anyone who blinks might miss the lightning-fast appearance of Rio in the final version of the film, but at least it gave a taste, however small, of Rio’s beautiful scenery. In short, after months of doubt as to whether or not Rio would be the setting for the film, the image below was what was left of the author’s original conception in the final form of the film.
Although disappointed with the shrinking of Brazil’s participation in the project, we look back on the experience philosophically affirming that one scene is better than no scene at all, right?

2022 in a nutshell
Had my first Omakase experience; which cost my date $900 for 2 pax. It was so, so good. I will never forget how rich the uni was, the lobster broth and how fluffy abalone tempura could be
Had my first cat-fished experience twice this year. One had no neck (and no, he isn’t fat) and the other had the audacity to meet me looking so far-fetched from his profile (he still had his jawline in his profile pic)!!!
Had 2 dudes randomly deleting our entire convo on Telegram and un-matching me on apps IN THE MIDST OF A VERY ENGAGING CONVERSATION. Bro???
Had 3 times Stay-home-notice when I have no covid.
Had covid from clubbing after being successfully avoiding it for 2 years.
First time making out with a dude this young in the club, prolly 24 or so.
Got ghosted 251061563 times by dudes randomly in the midst of a really good conversation - no, really, wtf
Papa got admitted into hospital
My close friend got diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BP)
Papa got diagnosed with brain cancer
Shuttling between hospitals visiting papa and my friend
Clients giving trouble at work
Close girlfriend who is constantly late on me for so long, confronting me on why am I avoiding her
Friend’s parents refused to let her take her BP medicine, even though my friend wants to eat her medicine
Sissy got married
Papa refuses to eat medicine
Papa passed away
Friend got better
More ghosting from random ass dudes
Sissy moved out
Had a minor eye op to remove 2 styes and 1 chalazion
Slipped and fell. Multi-fracture on my 5th metatarsal bone and had bone displacement
Travelled out to Phuket in a wheelchair for Company Retreat - all of the above for the first time, in an aircast ( which apparently, is a Singaporean invention!!!)
Bought Bhutan tickets, bought Hokkaido Biz class tickets
More quarrels at home regarding money, helper and assets
Settled administrative papers
More fucked up clients
Birthday was great - no need to wait for a girlfriend that is always late, and then I can’t be angry because it’s my birthday
Me blogging this.
I need this year to end, ASAP.
I am so, so tired. It comes to a point where I don’t mind being taken out of this life - is living supposed to be this difficult though?
All the bad things must end with this year. 2022 shall be the WORSE year of my life and nothing more. I am done with hospital visits and calls. I am done with administrative work.

Your dream city?
If you live in a metro city, chances are you adapted to make peace with it. Traffic, distances, lack of schools, hospitals, and so on.
So when someone says they are building a new city, you stand up and take notice. What is their vision? What are they building? Can others emulate them?
Neom in Saudi Arabia and Gelephu in Bhutan, are new cities being built. Bhutan has long eschewed growth at all costs, preferring happiness coexisting with development. But a rapid migration of the young, especially post covid, has made them think again.
Gelephu is a thousand square kilometers of land area being modelled as a new city in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Just for context, the country Singapore is approximately seven hundred kilometers.
Mindfulness, wellness, health, serenity are some themes. Education that serves these themes. Nestled amidst nature. Tourists are welcome.
Neom is a new city being built in Saudi Arabia, the size of Belgium. Its theme is new age, modern, the use of green materials. It is open for business - financial services and technology but also health and wellness.
So if you could pick at will, which one would you pick and why? You could easily say both given the quality of life you have today. You could say neither, too comfortable with the friends and family you have nearby.
Moving, they say, is as stressful as a divorce. But India for example, has cities that are broken. If you have lived long enough, you may not notice, but the city takes a toll on your mind and body.
The air quality, the noise pollution, the traffic, lack of affordable schools and hospitals. The list is endless. Building in cities that are habited is hard.
So we need new cities, built from scratch. With a vision that cannot be altered no matter what the commercial interest.
What would your dream city look like?

Bhutan, after prioritizing happiness, now faces an existential crisis https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bhutan-emigration-crisis-60-minutes/
Are all the solar punk friendos looking at Bhutan as a model of an actual functional society based on things other than consumption? Bc look at how it runs now. There's problems, of course, that's what this article is about, but... So many good things too.

BHS talks of automation in corrugated industry
At the recently concluded IndiCorr Expo 2024 in Mumbai, BHS talked about how its automation solutions can help reduce input costs and improve margins for players in the corrugated industry. Ajay Bhardwaj, sales manager for India at BHS, highlighted the company's focus on minimizing reliance on manpower.
"We are going to help customers by reducing the dependency on manpower, adding more and more automation—not just on the corrugated line, but beyond it,” he said.
BHS has been working on introducing automated systems to streamline production, such as automated conveyor systems that enhance efficiency from the exit conveyor to the work-in-progress and final goods areas. Bhardwaj pointed out that this development aligns with the growing demand from customers for automation, particularly after Covid-19.
Asked about the Indian corrugation industry’s adoption of automation, Bhardwaj noted a significant shift post-Covid. He explained, "Before 2020, the industry was very low-tech, with basic jobs and simple machines. However, we have seen a major shift since Covid, with customers moving from semi-automatic to fully automatic machines."
This trend, he said, has led to the industry's embrace of technology that not only automates production but reduces costs by cutting electricity and glue consumption, as well as minimizing wastage. This is especially important as 80-85% of product cost in the corrugated industry is paper.
Bhardwaj highlighted the advanced technology BHS offers for reducing wastage, specifically in managing paper splices during job changes. "Our splice technology allows customers to manage all five paper joints within a 3-5 meter length, significantly reducing paper wastage," he explained.
Looking to the future, Bhardwaj expressed optimism about BHS’ growth in the Indian market. He said since starting operations in 2011, BHS initially sold only one machine by 2015, but the company has since gained momentum. "From 2016 to now, we have increased the number of corrugators from 4-5 to over 20," Bhardwaj said. He attributed this growth to the introduction of more suitable products for the Indian and African markets, such as the 2.2-meter and 1.8-meter working width corrugators, which have been well-received in India.
Bhardwaj said BHS’s journey in India has been spurred by key partnerships with major customers in the corrugation industry, which have placed repeat orders.
In addition to its success in India, BHS has expanded its footprint to neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, selling multiple machines in these regions.
Bhardwaj concluded by expressing confidence in the company's trajectory, saying, "With our continuous innovation and strong customer relationships, the growth we have seen since 2019 is set to continue."

India’s Role in the SAARC Tech Initiative
India’s leadership in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Tech Initiative has played a leading and an important role in driving technological advancement and regional development. By leveraging its growing technological capabilities, India has fostered collaboration among SAARC member states, paving the way for collective progress. This initiative emphasizes digital infrastructure development, cross-border technology exchange, and innovation in sectors like e-governance, telecommunications, and education, ultimately benefiting millions of people across South Asia. India's efforts have not only addressed shared challenges like digital inequality and infrastructure deficits but also strengthened regional ties.
A prime example of India’s influence can be seen in the realm of digital infrastructure. India’s Digital India program has set a regional benchmark for digital transformation, inspiring neighboring countries to enhance their technological landscapes. Collaborative projects like cross-border fiber optic connectivity between India and Bhutan (as discussed in the previous blog) have dramatically improved internet access in the latter, enabling significant advancements in e-governance, online education, and trade relations. India’s role in providing both technical expertise and financial backing highlights its commitment to boosting the digital economy throughout the region.
India’s success in e-governance has also left a lasting impact on SAARC member nations. By promoting the digitization of public services, India has set an example that countries like Bangladesh and the Maldives have begun to follow. Bangladesh’s national ID system, inspired by India’s Aadhar program, has streamlined government services and reduced fraud in welfare distribution. Such initiatives demonstrate India’s capacity to export its technological advancements to neighboring nations, ultimately improving governance and public service delivery.
The SAARC Tech Initiative’s focus on education and innovation has further showcased India’s leadership in fostering regional growth. India's advancements in educational technology (EdTech) have provided scalable models for other SAARC countries to follow, particularly at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Indian platforms such as BYJU's and Coursera India have expanded their reach to neighboring countries, offering courses and resources to students in Sri Lanka and Nepal. Additionally, cross-border teacher training programs facilitated by India have helped improve digital education methodologies, making quality education more accessible in remote areas.
In the telecommunications sector, India’s contribution has been especially notable. Indian telecom giants like Jio and Airtel have expanded their services to Nepal and Sri Lanka, bringing affordable mobile connectivity to previously underserved areas. This improved access to telecommunications has had a profound impact on these economies, particularly in rural regions, where internet access was once limited. The role of Indian companies in transforming telecommunications across the SAARC region reflects India’s commitment to regional connectivity and digital inclusion.
India’s startup ecosystem has also played a vital role in fostering innovation within the SAARC Tech Initiative, with many startups getting name and fame through international media like shark tank. Collaborative efforts through startup exchange programs and incubator partnerships have created opportunities for entrepreneurs across South Asia. Indian accelerators like T-Hub in Hyderabad have partnered with counterparts in Bangladesh to provide mentorship, funding, and market access for tech-based startups. These collaborations not only promote technological innovation but also address local challenges, fostering sustainable growth.
Despite these, the SAARC Tech Initiative faces challenges, particularly political tensions between member nations. Disparities in technological infrastructure between countries also pose obstacles to seamless collaboration. However, India’s role remains crucial to overcoming these barriers. By continuing to promote regional cooperation in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cybersecurity, India can help future-proof the region and address common concerns such as climate change, agriculture, and disaster management.
India’s leadership in the SAARC Tech Initiative is both a responsibility and an opportunity even though the initiative is at its beginning stages. By fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, India can continue to drive regional progress and uplift the technological capabilities of South Asia in the future. The success of this initiative reflects the importance of regional cooperation in the digital age and underscores that technological advancement is a shared endeavor that has the potential to benefit millions across borders.

Beth Whitman - completed the Grand Slam Plus with Racing the Planet. This included running 5 separate events, each 250K, across Georgia (the country), the Namib Desert in Namibia, the Atacama in Chile, the Gobi in Mongolia and Antarctica.
Beth is a traveler first and foremost. With 35 years of travel experience, each year she spends three to four months abroad, combining her love of adventure with vacation and business.
For 15 years she has been running WanderTours, focusing on women-only tours, where she encourages and inspires women to dive deep into cultures and to challenge themselves by getting out of their comfort zone.
She recently discovered running and, at age 50, ran her first marathon. She then discovered ultra-running and has been using these as an excuse to explore remote destinations around the globe that few people ever see.
Most recently she completed the Grand Slam Plus with Racing the Planet. This consisted of running five 250K stage races across four deserts: the Gobi in Mongolia, the Atacama in Chile, the Namib in Namibia, Antarctica and, the one non-desert race, a run across the country of Georgia.
While many people have completed these races, she is part of a small group of competitors (only seven women!) who have completed them in a year's time (OK, slightly longer due to Covid).
***
We first spoke with Beth - Feb 11th 2020 - Running her 1st Marathon at 50, completing the Snowman Trek in Bhutan.

She asked “If you could do anything in the world, what would you do?”
The only thing that kept running through my mind over the past year is to honestly escape.
Escape in longing of finding myself.
To simply put it, I honestly wish I could just book a ticket to Nepal/Bhutan and go on a solo hiking trip with my phone completely off.
Retreat and disconnecting myself from the world and in hope of reconnecting with myself.
Tuning in to my own feelings. Cutting off all responsibilities and worldly distractions.
Slowly unrevealing and peeling myself to the bare bones. The core. The basic necessities.
Sometimes I do miss covid times, the lockdown times to be exact. Everything seems so much simpler. The world seemed hectic and deadly but life was so much simpler then and I weirdly, do miss it.
Over the years, we go back running on autopilot, going into the routines and eventually forget who we truly are. Forget what was truly important.
But sadly, the mere thought of ditching one’s responsibility and switching off completely seems like a fantasy. At least for now.
