If you don't mind me asking, who were your tes ocs?

Ah im being visited by the ghost of Hyperfixations past. I'm giving a warning that the art here is older, some more so then others.

SO I had a few characters.

But my main oc who I've had since i was like 13 is Eliana. She's changed a lot over the years. I was, suffice to say, pretty obsessed with her for quite awhile.

She was my main PC for Skyrim, and she primarily did the Dragonborn stuff alongside Dawnguard and the like [i split up the different plotlines among different characters]. She's a battlemage, uses a combination of fire magic and sword work, and tends to wear more lighter armor for dexeterity based moves. Originally from Hammerfell, she came to Skyrim on a rather personal mission before, yknow, all hells broke loose and oh boy! Suddenly you're expected to save the world and also you're not entierly mortal, have fun with that.

(Also fun fact, while obviouslly not by name in universe, she has type 2 waardenburg syndrome, which is why her eyes are discoloured + has hearing loss)

El's generally a pretty friendly and sweet girl, but she very much tends to get caught up in her own head, and struggles a lot with the balance between power and responbility, and uh, quite a lot of ptsd and stress by the end of it. theres a lot more but uh, we would be here forever lmao.

and uh. i guess ill give a brief overview of the others under the cut. I had vague ideas of a lot of them exisiting in the timeline and their interactions overlapping.

Laymus is an imperial who originally grew up on a farm with a lot of siblings. He struck out on his own in hopes of taking a stronger control of his own life, and because there wasn't really much for him there. Primarily a hunter, Laymus had an unfortunate encounter with a werewolf... which, left a substiantial impact on his being. He specializes in archery and fighting from a distance... at least, most of the time. [yea he's a werewolf lol. i was gonna do the companions quest with him but never got around to it. i usually play as him when im playing with survival mods, its very fun. he was also one of my earliest forays into having a transmasc oc ]

Faelynn is a bosmer, but was actually raised in Cyrodiil by her adoptive father, who ran a tavern there. She is considerbly older then some of my other characters, and long since outliver her human parent. She had a fascination in poisons from a young age, and after an... incident, became far more invested in them. She is the character I play through the dark brotherhood with, specializes in daggers and poison, alongside alchemy.

Erion is an aldermi character of mine, someone who's family has ties to the thalmor, an area of which he does not connect to. He has a rather.... unfortunately complicated history with his family, that was made all the more interesting by an encounter with Nocturnal at a young age...

He focuses on shadowy skills, a master of sneaking and not being seen when he doesn't want to be. He is the one i do the thieves guild questline with.

Adra is a dunmer, and grew up with a particularly strong set of daedra worshippers, which, suffice to say, has some complications with her background. She vaguely remembers her mother, but has little concept of who her father could even have been. She struggles a lot with self esteem and has a tendancy towards jealousy of those she percieves as doing better then her.

She specializes as a mage, primarily in destruction magic, with a knack for electricity and lightning. She is a student at the college of winterhold.

and that covers the main ones! Or, at least the ones i play the game with anyway. Honourable mentions are Valia and Ashanta, who are Eliana's mothers.

These two met during the battles between Hammerfell and the Aldmeri Dominion, of which Ashanta was a warrior on Hammerfell's side, and Valia was a healer of whom defected, their paths crossing. Its quite a tale in and off itself!

Valia died prior to the start of skyrim.......... the aldmeri are particularly kind to defectors, we shall say.

And then i have a few others. Anja is a nord background character concept I made, who runs a bakery in Riverwood [inspired by me learning about the history of bread making and the important of a baker in a town]. She also ends up adopting some of the orphans in the game lol. Allian is my oblivion character who wasnt ever super developed, i should get back to that... he's an imperial, and is actually Laymus' uncle.

I'm pretty sure I have a few more somewhere but uh. yea! thats the base up of it. hope you were prepared for my great overview XD XD

— now to start off, i wanna say i do ship daniel, dottie WITH rylan and june- in a polyamorous thing- this isn’t a headcanon i just don’t talk about it much.

rylan and june both love candy apples. specifically yellow ones covered in caramel, and they make them from ‘scratch’ which is an all day thing since it’s actually very hard to do.

june genuinely had no idea rylan liked her until he began to give her small presents such as candy or little drawings- and she fell for him cause that’s fucking adorable

june brings rylan dead animals- this is soley based on the fact that my kitties used to bring me dead bugs and birds and meow at me until i clapped for them. it’s like little gifts

rylan is possessive of june, especially around other werewolves, and will hug up on her if he feels she is too close (but he’s not crazy like in the actual series lol).

june has a pinterest board on rylan and what he reminds her of.

rylan plays soccer, and when he practices he likes to make three straight goals for june- since i made her birthday march third which is 3/3.

since rylan can’t handle strong smells, june uses vanilla and strawberry pound cake perfume, but only on her wrists and heels.

rylan smells like caramel and june really fucking loves that.

june is chubby and a bit self conscious, but so is rylan- so they’re constantly arguing like- ‘you’re not allowed to body shame yourself only i can do that to myself’ kind of thing.

they’re in soft love and you’ve encouraged me to later make a full headcanon list on my poly one. maybe. if people like that but i love you smsmsmsm thank you for drawing art mwah mwah

hi vic! i was wondering how you decide on and create the “official” covers for your fics as well as for each individual chapter. do they have meaning? also when do you decide on the cover, is it while you’re writing or is that process completely separate and comes after the writing. they are always so stunning and one of my favorite parts when you release a new chapter!

heeeeyyyyy 🤩 the posters and art i choose are also one of my favorite parts so i’m soooooo happy that you like them too!

so i make very extensive pinterest boards for each story and as i go collecting ideas there i kind of find the vibe i’m going to go for in each story. i took a much more classic approach for FoG (even though not all of the pieces were classical works) and i chose them in terms of the events of each chapter/something that i felt paired well with each individual chapter title/the obvious recurring bird imagery. so like for chapter 8 the fisher king i wanted something in nature (like growing things/new beginnings/healing) but also something representative of ellie bc i felt that was her most important moment with joel and that piece reminded me so much of her tattoo. and then like i chose the goldfinch for the masterlist cover bc it’s one of my favorite books / paintings of all time and i felt it just fit both birdie and joel.

for someone’s wife there are no chapter titles so they’re more like mood of the chapter/plot derived and i went for a more modern/funky/colorful vibe for this for some reason. i chose that first blue painting of the two people embracing bc it seemed so melancholy and idk like yearning? desperate? something like that? there are several mentions of blue curtains for some reason throughout the story and it reminded me of that detail.

i do kind of mark different pieces as i’m writing that i think will either work for a moodboard or a chapter poster but as i pre write almost everything (someone’s wife is completely finished) i have most art chosen already as of now. so far i’ve planned out until about chapter 7ish i think. i made the first three chapter posters weeks and weeks ago and they’ve just been sitting in my drafts lol

but also sometimes just nothing works and i struggle really hard to find the right piece for a work (this is happening to me right now with the first FoG drabble i wanted to post) because it’s like not a specific thing i’m looking for just a mood/i’ll know it when i see it type thing.

Do you have any types for new artist with aphantasia? You're the first ever artist i've met who has it like me and i find myself struggling a lot ):

Tips? Mostly just use a lot of reference and don’t be afraid to work through a sketch a lot to get it to look the way it’s supposed to, I’ll often grab a whole limb and rotate it with the transform tool then draw over again. Drawing like this feels like... you get better at packing on the pieces and finding the combinations that work instead of trying to realise an idea that was already formed, at least for me.

I only have digital tips but it might be worth learning to photobash your references -- photobashing is taking prexisting photos, textures and stock, then putting it together and painting over to get the image you want. It’s used a lot in concept art but I’ll use it to make location references for my stories because I can’t visualise the locations at all. Like this, and after I’ve done this I can just reference the final image instead of bashing my official art (never posted this pic btw, only refer back to it) --

Another thing to try is I know that it’s very hard to think in 3D when you can’t think visually at all so it might be worth trying to stylistically lean into the flatness and make use of the fact that you’re drawing on a 2D plane. One of my favourites I’ve done is this (below) where there’s not REALLY an in-front or behind in a fully realised way but I tried to stack/overlap different features like I was laying thin slices over each other, then differentiated it through values instead of perspective. 

It might be good to put some extra attention into the light and dark balance of your stuff because Things Being Different Colours (Or Textures) is usually something the aphantasic brain can grasp better when it comes to differentiating parts of your piece.

The other thing with this particular piece is I couldn’t grasp the composition so I ASKED FOR HELP. @xxtrashcatxx​ and I share these characters so I simply asked her for direction and she sent stained glass windows and a pose she’d drawn of two people hands clasped. When we work on the official Dies Irae illustrations she outright draws the thumbnails for me because collab powers with someone who can make mental images. So connecting with artist friends can be a great help. 

Scaling down a bit, it also um might take longer than average to grasp art basics because you’re basically training your hands to think for you instead of just drawing. Finding your Aesthetic might be more a conscious choice you have to make, I know when my visualisation skills were GOING (because I used to have them, just a little bit, when I was younger, then developed brain issues lol) I spent a while artistically lost because the idea of drawing cool things didn’t occur to me when I could no longer see the cool things in my head. Sometimes you need to look at other art to be reminded of what you’re allowed to DO. Or maybe I’m just boring inside LOL

Now I very intentionally keep reference folders, pinterest boards, inspiration hoard, got my reblog sideblog, just as much intentional guidance as possible. Running theme here is if you need the help, use it. Look at to tutorials. Do studies or appropriations when the original idea just won’t come, there’s a reason my therapy art is highly-referenced adaptations of classical art or just a plain portrait sometimes. Original Idea Original Pose Original Composition is what I consider a high effort piece, but to chill out and draw for fun I’ll often just reference stock photo poses or magazine covers instead, it’s lower stress that way and I still get the practice in.

I don’t know a lot of artists with aphantasia besides @iliothermia who does the most delicately and lovingly detailed transmasc art I’ve seen and is a massive inspiration to me, in part BECAUSE of his aphantasia; the fact that someone with the same kinda brain as me is already making the kind of art I love the most and doing it such a tender and well-realised way gives me ARTISTIC HOPE FOR THE FUTURE WOOOOO

Do you get on Facebook every day?  Yeah pretty much all throughout the day. I used to never use it, like never ever; but back in college all announcements were coursed through Facebook so I was technically required to be on it regularly, and it was from there that I began to see memes and start to be more active. I’m a shitposter more than anything though and I rarely ever post stuff of my own. How many FB friends do you have?  I have 679 at the moment but I want to get rid of like 500 of them; it’s just such a long list to go through so I never get to proceed with my unfriending spree lol.

Have you ever been on a deleting spree?  HAHA I just mentioned that. I’ve always wanted to, but like I said 679 is already such an exhaustive list for me, and that’s considering I only started touching my Facebook in like 2019. I can’t imagine people who started Facebook in like 2009 and have 4000 friends aka most people I know.

Have you blocked a lot of haters?  I don’t have haters; at least I’m not aware of any that I have. Not that it’s something I care about at this point.

Do you get bullied online a lot?  No, but that’s also because I don’t really open the channels for people to send in hate. I don’t have Q&A handles like Curious Cat and I never pick out that option in Instagram where people can send in questions.

What's your favorite Facebook app?  Oh I never use Facebook for their apps. Are those still even a thing...? Anyway, I mainly go there to be on the hunt for stupid memes I can reshare or to watch videos that are either funny or informative.

Are you a fan of selfies?  I don’t mind if other people do it, but I think I’m honestly bad at selfies so I almost never take them. I’ve never figured out my angles or what filters look ok on me.

Has anyone ever called the police on you because they didn't like your status?  No but I have had my posts reported because they were deemed ‘offensive.’ Which is weird because my posts that have been taken down are those that speak out against disgusting men, which says a lot about Facebook runs their shit more than anything else.

Are you in any facebook groups?  I’m in nearly a hundred groups, both private i.e. for school purposes, and public.

Are you the admin of any groups?  Nah. Too much time and effort needed out of me.

Do you report abuse to group admins whenever you see it?  Yes. I report the post then leave the group.

What could make Facebook better?  They could put more effort into detecting and banning troll farms.

What year did you start using Facebook?  I made an account in 2012 because of a high school class that required us to upload this specific video-format homework onto Facebook (which in hindsight is such an insensitive homework considering that was nearly a decade ago when the Philippines was still severely behind in internet connection speeds?? Ugh). But I didn’t start actively using my account until around two years ago.

What kind of things do you post on YouTube?  I’ve never posted any video on there, not even private ones. I’m also not the type to comment.

What do you like to watch on YouTube?  These days YouTube serves as a stress reliever for me, which is to say I would typically go for humorous BTS-related compilations because there are sooooo many hilarious channels that make these great videos haha. Occasionally I’d go back to channels or series that I used to frequent, like Good Mythical Morning, Buzzfeed’s Worth It and Unsolved, Try Guys, Watcher, etc.

Do you watch any vlogs? If so, what ones are your favorite?  Hm probably Jiwoo’s, though her channel is called Mejiwoo. I find her content calming and conversational and basically fun to binge-watch when I’m not looking for anything super super particular to watch.

Do you think twitter is stupid? Hehe show me at least one person who doesn’t think so. < Coming from someone who regularly uses Twitter, agree. It is crazy stupid but stupid is what I’m there for. Which is honestly not always such a bad thing to me - I like that people are more themselves, more stripped-down, vulnerable on Twitter. People always seem to want to show off their best selves on Facebook and Instagram, so I’m actually kind of grateful that there is at least one social media out there where people can just be their clumsy, goofy selves.

How often do you tweet?  Probably a maximum of five a day. Nowadays I’m on there mostly to just scroll through my timelines.

Did you have a myspace when you were in high school?  I started an account in like 4th grade when Myspace was ~big, but I didn’t find it fun and everyone my age was on Friendster anyway, so I was largely inactive.

Do you use myspace now?  No. Is it still even around? I have no clue.

2019 Debut YA Covers Megapost (part 1)

I’ve fallen off the wagon of keeping up with cover reveals even a little, and there were a whole bunch in the past few weeks, so to get back up, i’m gonna try to do quick and dirty rundowns of as many 19 debuts as have had cover reveals (that I haven’t already talked about) as I can this week! HERE WE GO (these are in no particular order):

1) BLOODLEAF by Crystal Smith

Oh Bloodleaf, you expensive little TOG rehash. What have you brought us. This is another Billelis creation, and I actually like the type! The hypercondensed slight serif feels appropriate but fresh for YA fantasy and the color scheme, the central flower image, and the silver thorns are all really working. BUT I have the exact same issue that I had with the updated Dark of the West cover; the “fancy border with illustrated story-relevant elements” thing doesn’t really work for me when it’s uneven and almost-random the way this is. The crown, moon and tree up top are so symmetrical and balanced that you expect the same thing in the opposite corners, and instead you get a castle with a lot more visual weight than the others, plus a raven and a bow that are just...... hanging out? This would have been a stronger cover with the additional symbols completely removed; the flower and thorns are plenty of visual interest alone.

2) THE PIONEER by Bridget Tyler 

I am obsessed with this one. I don’t know a damn thing about the book, haven’t seen it hyped on twitter or anywhere else, but this cover is gorgeous and perfect and evocative; there’s DEPTH and DRAMATIC COLOR and it’s got BISEXUAL LIGHTING and the outlined type is INTERESTING. It’s an aesthetic cousin to the UK Edition of THE DEVOURING GRAY that i talked about here and it looks like a movie poster and I want it on my wall. 

3) ENCHANTEE by Gita Trelease

Poor Enchantee has already had a cover redesign (old on the left, new one on the right, with the face). It was for the better, although they didn’t address my biggest issue with the original, which is that tYPE. The even-width, sort of chalkish calligraphy SCREAMS “art director’s instagram” and “cloyingly cute NEVERTHELESS, SHE PERSISTED posters you can buy on Etsy”, and “chalkboard signage your high school friend pinned to her WEDDING INSPO pinterest board”, rather than. Yknow. Sexy Magic Revolutionary France, which is the book. Where is the CONTRAST. where is the impression of ACTUAL INK. (Also: I didn’t crop these weird, the type being cut off/ a tangent on the edge there is Actually Like That.)

The Lipstick-ed face DOES say Sexy Magic Revolutionary France, so I appreciate its presence and also think it looks good (it def is victim to looking a little like a tumblr graphic, a phenomenon i have mentioned before, but that’s pretty harmless here); and the gold paint splotches and red-blue starry textures are pretty! They could have done a less halfassed job getting the vivid blue cropped around her chin, but. C'est la vie. I like it and I’m actually super hype for the book itself.

4) THE FEVER KING by Victoria Lee

This is......... a weird one. I love the colors! the blue and purple (veins?) lightning is really striking (LOL) and the texture is super visually interesting. I’m very curious to see the print choices eventually; I think matte vs glossy vs texture vs foil could make a big difference in how this one feels overall. I sort of wish SOMETHING was different, just to make this a little less symmetrical or abstract, whether that’s a different text layout or an additional focal point in the imagery or whatever, but I do think it fundamentally works as-is.

5) FOUR DEAD QUEENS by Astrid Scholte

Thanks, I hate it! this shares a lot of problems with the Burning Glass cover and everything I dislike about lazy object covers generally: the imagery is unclear at first glance (what a waste of all that detailed rendering) and not evocative of anything in particular in terms of mood, setting, or themes, and the type’s layout COULD NOT BE MORE BORING + is an ineffective use of the space and has a totally unnecessary glowy effect. The “spotlight” effect could generously be considered to be a visual signifier of the ~ murder mystery element but. oof. is a 90s crime drama aesthetic really what you want your secondary visual to be on what seems to be a pretty serious YA fantasy book?

(Okay, it could be worse, at least the hierarchy is clear and sensible. but that DNA crown, lmfao.)

6) AGAIN, BUT BETTER by Christine Riccio

I got a couple requests for this one, and I really like it!!! i think the illustration style is SO cute and the whole layout is simple but effective. The little touches like the birds in the corner and the placement of “a novel” are all perfectly balanced; it’s a more successful version of the illustration on WHAT IF IT’S US (and a few others, like HOT DOG GIRL by Jennifer Dugan; that general style + palette is a trend right now) and the concept of the line across and the girl coming into full color is a clever little representation of the coming-of-age story elements.

7) HOUSE OF SALT AND SORROWS by Erin Craig

I really! WANT! To like this cover! I think the layout and rendering of the text and the various nautical effects are sophisticated and pretty! HOWEVER COMMA! It’s just so low-contrast. This entire cover has the same single gray-green color and [lack of] depth; it’s like an intricately detailed dining room table. Nothing, not even the text, stands out immediately, so your eye wanders looking for a focal point; the title is readable, but not.... amazingly so. Kind of an unfortunate misfire despite having some of the most thoughtfully designed ~ fantasy ~ text I’ve seen in a while.

8) WE RULE THE NIGHT by Claire Eliza Bartlett

This is, quite obviously, another Billelis creation, so we’re back to talking about the various foibles and failings of art directors trying to integrate type with his illustrations. And this one. uH. IT’S ROUGH, although the bigger question here is why that gorgeous, intricately rendered phoenix (?) isn’t centered on the damn cover. (neither is the.... fortress? on the bottom.) It’s so symmetrical that it’s clearly meant to be! Perfect centering and a tighter crop would have done a lot towards offsetting...... whatever is happening with the type, which feels VERY awkward. I do think the sort of ~random placement of words could work with a little more thought but into it, but as it is. Woof. It’s cohesive enough that I still feel okay about it as a cover overall, but some sTRANGE choices happened there.

Also, having looked this up, it’s actually dieselpunk? IE vaguely fantasy WWII? And as with our last vaguely fantasy WWII book (RIP Dark of the West’s OG cover) that is..... not being expressed. Here, I would say that a different typeface, one that feels more militaristic/ modern as opposed to ~ high fantasy ~ might have been the play.

Update and Plan

Hello, my dear followers! How are all of you doing? I hope you’re doing great!

I thought I would make this little update post to explain why I haven’t been posting much recently except for the occasional reblog. 

The end of May and the beginning of June have been very busy for me. Quite a few things have happened in this span of time. 

I was a junior marshal for the seniors of my high school. They’re graduation was at the end of May. We had graduation rehearsal and then later that week we had graduation. It was actually a lot more stressful than I thought it would be, since all I was going was handing out the program sheets and then walking to sit behind the graduates (at least I wasn’t the chief marshal.) But maybe it was stressful because I may have a little bit of social anxiety (I’m not sure). I get really nervous around large crowds when I know they’re looking at me. 

Then my (dad’s mom) grandmother was in the hospital. She’s better now though, but she has to stop smoking and that’s a little difficult for her. 

I also went to my cousin’s high school graduation. It was really nice, but as soon as my mom, my grandmother (my mom’s mom), and myself were about the leave it started pouring rain so we couldn’t go get our car. Luckily, one of the graduates had already been out there and was soak so he offered to get our car for us. That was really nice of him.

And lastly I just recently went on a trip to Ocracoke Island, NC with my mom (she had a business trip and brought me with her). I hung out with some of my family over there. That was only my second time over there. I hadn’t been there since 6th grade, so six years since I’ll be a senior in high school this upcoming school year. 

I’m also going to be working on a few scholarship essays for the next few weeks or so because I’ll be starting college apps this upcoming school year. Fun!

I’ve been reading books as well. I haven’t done that in a while because of school. Oof.

So, now for my plan, I guess.

I want to build up my queue so that I don’t have to make posts every week while I’m working on the scholarship essays. So, I won’t be posting much for the next few weeks. Here’s some of the things I plan on making:

WIP Intros for each of my named wips.

A masterlist! I need something to organize the mess that is my blog lol. It’ll have stuff about me, my other social media, my wips, and random stuff.

Character drawings! I drabble in digital art so I want to work on some art work for my OCs.

How I plan my novels. I’ll show how I set up my notebooks for planning.

Pinterest boards for my wips! I need to organize them a little then I plan on making them public and providing a link to them.

Character Intros. I don’t really talk much about my characters, so I want to introduce them.

Some book reviews maybe.

My TBR list. There’s a lot. I haven’t been able to read them because of school.

Book recommendations.

Playlists for my wips! I have to put them together though, but they’ll eventually be on spotify. 

I want to try and make some mock book covers for my wips. I’ll try lol.

While my blog and digital photo books have taken over my hobby time recently, my heart is more in the realm of paper crafting even if it’s been almost a year since I tackled a project. The days are just too short to do everything I want to do, so sometimes things get put aside for a while. I know that eventually I will circle back to my paper crafts and put my obsessively over stocked craft room to good use again.

I have always been drawn to other crafters who excel in the field and have an entire bookcase dedicated to books written by fellow memory keepers sharing their tips and tricks. So, when I realized that there was a quilling artist located in Maine, I knew I had my letter Q locked up. I too have tried my hand at quilling, but on a much more simplistic and less successful level. 

Stacy Bettencourt creates incredible designs that bring paper to life. When I scrolled through her website, Mainely Quilling, and looked and the portfolio of designs she has done I am truly in awe. I recommend visiting her Pinterest board to see the range and scope of her work. It is impossible to pick a favorite although I find her quilled lobsters especially interesting probably because I love all things connected to Maine.

Stacy was kind enough to answer a few questions for me about her quilling art.

How long have you been quilling?

I have been quilling since late 2014.

Are you self-taught or did you take any lessons?

I am completely self-taught as are most quillers. It’s a medium that works easily and has a lot of possibilities. I think that perfectionists and control-freaks excel at it as we get to micromanage hundreds of teeny weeny pieces of paper and they have to do what we make them do – or else! (To the rubbish bin…) lol

Do you find your other art skills have helped you with your quilling projects?

I think that having innate artistic ability allows quillers to achieve excellence with their work and to create truly masterful artwork, though I have seen people with no “known” artistic talents become quite amazing quillers. Maybe it’s more to do with details and patience and persistence than artistic flair? I’m not entirely sure how it works. I think that my background in art has helped with presentation and color choices and balancing and knowing what people might like to look at.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I find inspiration in my daily life mostly. I get ideas when I think of something that interests me. I love adapting photographs and illustrations into the quilled medium. I like to remake line art. I often make things that I loved as a child – hence the horse, my mother’s house, the church, the lion, etc.

Is there a piece you’re especially proud of?

I’m especially proud of the lion and the horse. The horse was truly a labor of love as she took me over forty hours to complete. The lion was around 30-40 total. The art of quilling isn’t something you can whip up in a few minutes like a sketch. Projects often go on for days, even weeks.

What has been the most challenging piece you have made?

I can’t decide which piece was the most challenging as they all have their moments but in different ways. I tend to move from one extreme to another and with this come new techniques and… of course… challenges. My mother’s house was the first multi-layered piece I did and I had to create new techniques to make it work in four separate layers. The horse was completely “combed” (a technique) and I had to use the paper as paint to create the color gradients and shading. That was a new thing for me.

Are there any tips you would give to someone starting out with quilling?

The tips that I would give to anyone starting out with quilling is to begin with a small assortment of tools and paper. It’s very inexpensive, around $20 will get you through the initial phase where you decide if you like it or not. Google and Youtube are your friends when it comes to learning techniques and finding simple patterns to try out. And possibly the best thing to do is join an online quilling community like the one that I formed last year: Contemporary Quilling. The groups are filled with a wide range of quillers from beginner to expert and you will learn more than you think is possible while gathering inspiration and confidence with your own artwork.

When someone commissions you for a piece, what is the process?

The bulk of my commissions come from someone seeing a piece that I’ve posted on the web somewhere. They use the contact form on my website or message me through my Facebook page. We have a discussion about what they are looking for and I figure out a price for them. Once that’s settled I require a 50% non-refundable deposit to begin the piece and 50% prior to delivery. Most of my customers are from the US and they span from California all the way to the northern tip of Maine.

She also shares tips and tricks on quilling on her website including tutorials which cover everything from tools of the trade to the difference in paper widths and how it impacts your design. I especially liked her video on boucle, beehive, popcorn, continuous scroll. I had no idea how easy this one was to do. And by easy, I mean trying it on a random strip of paper. It would not be easy to use it in a design and make it look as amazing as she does. But, I am going to try it out on my next scrapbook page.

She sells some of her items through her Facebook store, and can be contacted directly for commissions. Wherever your imagination can take you, I’m pretty sure Stacy can follow turning strips of paper into intricate designs full of precision and whimsy.
