Support women's rights to look dead!#I have been waiting for this scene for ages...the ghost girl entourage is such a good look for WWX.#And by gods does the audio drama actually do something interesting with one of them.#Namely that we actually get to see WWX talk with them and learn about who they were and what they left behind.#I love necromancer characters but it's way too common for them to be like ā€œGo! It adds a lot of flavour!#MDZS is a little hit or miss with this. I think the fans do a lot of the work with making Mo Xuanyu a bigger character.#Yi City has this in spades. Even though we don't individually get character backstories#We get many painful reminders about how these 'corpses' were people.#We also get a few lines about how WWX used whatever corpses he could get his hands on (including grandparents - Woof!)#MDZS often (but not always) likes to remind us that every sacrifice and every ghost was a person.#It is so close to nailing the landing regarding the deconstruction of the necromancer character.#Anyhow. Made a FANTASTIC discovery today regarding the meaning behind Boothill's fourth eidolon, I'm so happy!!! Most of it is just cowboy references, like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eidolon 1: Dusty Trail's Lone Star- cowboy lingo, the Lone Star of Texas
Eidolon 2: Milestonemonger- more cowboy lingo, someone who roams and wanders
Eidolon 3: Marble Orchard's Guard- yet more cowboy lingo, a term for a graveyard (a fave of mine, because for me it evokes the image of a Church Grim <333)
Eidolon 4: Cold Cuts Chef- ????
Google didn't really provide much on Eidolon 4 like for the first three. Before today I had assumed it was just another movie reference of some sort, since Boothill is like entirely based on/inspired by old Western films.
"Cold cuts" are basically lunch meat/deli meat. It's precooked meat that doesn't need any kind of preparation- you can literally just eat it cold. Since it didn't seem to be a movie reference, I thought oh, maybe it's a nod to his lifestyle? Boothill is unhoused and lives on the run from the IPC with little rest, he doesn't really have the means to cook. Precooked, easy food like that would be a godsend for someone in his circumstances.
Anyway the original Chinese text gives it an entirely different, MUCH wilder meaning fjadskljfkld
Tumblr media
love how they chose "celebrity chef" to show his expertise and/or fame in this fjkdlsja
Because no, "cold cuts" isn't cowboy lingo for anything, but cold meat specifically is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's how you refer to a corpse.
"Cold Cuts Chef" is not a title talking about his cooking ability, or his life's circumstances, or anything as mundane as that, IT'S ABOUT THE FACT THAT BOOTHILL SPECIALIZES IN DEALING DEATH, THIS MAN IS EXTREMELY SKILLED, AND GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES, AND WHAT HE DOES IS MURDER!!!!!
#AND I LOVE THAT FOR HIM!!!!!!#*dreamy sigh* there is so much blood on his hands#I love morally dubious men <3#honkai star rail#hsr#honkai star rail boothill#hsr boothill#boothill#I know this eidolon's title is not a reference to any form of cannibalism. I know that.#But GOD I hope that's an in-universe rumor that spreads about him through the lower ranks of the IPC grunts JFKDLASJDKLFJ#I think he would lean into it so hard. he would have so much fun with it.#Boothill is hiding in the shadows waiting for the right moment to strike. He's listening to these two grunts gossip about him.#'Wow did you hear about that crazy cowboy. I heard they found the bodies with pieces missing.' Boothill has the biggest grin.#'I heard one time they didn't find the bodies at ALL.' 'That's terrifying!' Boothill has to bite his scarf to keep from cackling.#He keeps telling himself no no he can't reveal himself yet he's waiting for the patrol switch he has a goal today!!#'Thank the Preservation this place is safe. I wouldn't wanna be off-planet with a scary guy like that wandering around-#-especially if he really is eating people.' 'Surely that's not true though right? ...Right?'#Well. Look the point is he held out as long as he could ok.#And unable to resist the temptation any longer Boothill melts out of the shadows from behind them#right in between the two of them#and his voice is practically right in their ears as he tells them#'What'd ya think I got the teeth for?'#run boys run KFLAJKLFDJSKLFJDKLSJFDK

the gorgug-porter conversation is interesting to me because like. yea for the overwhelming majority of the conversation porterā€™s being shitty & trying to fit gorgug into a box that gorgug just does not fit into by trying to make gorgugā€™s relationship with his rage more focused on the aggression aspect of it. but then thereā€™s also this specific thing that brennan brought up again in the ap, which is that gorgugā€™s relationship with his rage is wholly ā€œthis is a tool i use to protect my friends.ā€ which isnā€™t a bad thing! but thatā€™s his Whole relationship with it, & gorgug seems to place next to no value on his rage in relationship to himself. which is problematic, because itā€™s first & foremost his rage.
being raised in a household with a sort of toxic positivity largely meant that, whether or not it was his parentsā€™ intention, gorgug internalized the message that more traditionally ā€œnegativeā€ emotions such as anger are the wrong response to something. part of the reason he prioritizes his artificing is probably because itā€™s ā€œfixingā€ things. in comparison to being a barbarian, which gorgug associates with ā€œbreakingā€ things. good vs. bad behavior, in his eyes.
itā€™s a totally unacceptable bar to measure a 16 y/o by, but i do think part of porterā€™s reasoning for not letting gorgug multiclass is him recognizing that gorgug generally does not value anger as a valid emotional response to something, at the very least for himself. & that directly conflicts with what being a barbarian is, because whether you like it or not, that rage is what fuels you. but again, barring a kid from pursuing something they deeply care about in part (not entirely, porter has a lot of more bullshit reasons) because of their fundamental values & world outlook is crazy.
so yes, 98% of porterā€™s reasoning is pretty shitty, immature, rife with a toxic view that thereā€™s only one proper way to access rage, & generally not a good thing to do as a teacher, but also within that reasoning is the 2% of ā€˜there is a fundamental part of yourself that you only value if you can use it to take care of other people & you need to accept that as something that can take care of you, too.ā€™ but thatā€™s something to discuss with a therapist or a guidance counselor, not something that should hugely impact gorgugā€™s academic future.
#gorgug thistlespring#fantasy high#dimension 20#fhjy#fhjy spoilers#btw these r just my personal opinions u r 100% free to disagree#gorgug & his rage interest me so deeply because of how deeply that rage existing seems to be against gorgugā€™s own will#like mechanically classes are choices & you can switch stuff around any time. but gorgug as a barbarian always felt like an unwilling choice#like that 14 y/o kid did not want to have rage. & that really interests me.#iā€™ve seen people before be like ā€˜what if gorgug dropped barbarian & went full srtificerā€™ but i feel like that simply canā€™t happen??#mechanically yea sure but it always felt like a core part of gorgug that the rage will always be there & itā€™s a matter of how you channel it#idk. dnd classes narratively being treated as ā€˜you can not lose this part of youā€™ even though you technically can#gorgug could be lvl 19 artificer & heā€™d still have 1 level of barbarian. because that is part of who he is.#btw i donā€™t think porter truly cares about gorgug valuing his rage only as a way to be a human shield#i think porter just sees that as ā€˜wrongā€™ but like. not as in ā€˜you need to take care of yourselfā€™ & more ā€˜you arenā€™t conformingā€™#he thinks itā€™s wrong for the wrong reasons. the nastier ā€˜this is how you should beā€™ reasons#ppl being like ā€˜we r being too hard on porter. itā€™s an 150% courseload gorgug will be overwhelmedā€™ i think r missing the point bc like.#that is 100% a valid reason to not approve gorgug for multiclassing! but thatā€™s also 100% not the reason porter rejected him.#that whole interaction was basically porter shoving his percieved version of conformity down gorgugā€™s throat. was v neurodivergent kid coded#no hate to anyone saying that last point btw these r all just opinions#thinking about last ep wilma & digby being like ā€˜youā€™re a great barbarian. youā€™re so great at it. but look at what you made!!!ā€™ like.#they would never mean it like that. but when you only understand half of your son he is going to prioritize the half you do.

What's the Wardi cultural take on Akoshos sleeping with/partnering with/marrying other Akoshos?
It's not highly regulated to a degree that there are overwhelming cultural norms about it. There's a lot of societal focus on akoshos being theoretically suitable sexual partners for both men and women due to being dual-gendered, but not to an extent that relationships with One Another are stigmatized.
They also largely get to escape from the most severe concerns about penetrator/penetrated power dynamics because they're not regarded as Men (they're regarded as dual-gendered, and they're a female social class on every practical level), there's no status of manhood to Lose by receiving sexual penetration. The only real thing you see in that department is people assuming that one acts as 'the man' and one acts as 'the woman', but this is largely due to preoccupation with a notion of sex being Penetration With A Penis (and that Penetration With A Penis means that one person is in a Man's Role and one person is in a Woman's Role). But this will not be regarded as unnatural as in same-gender male relations, akoshos will Have to take up a position in this sexual dichotomy if they want to have Real Sex (Penetration With A Penis) with each other, and this is not unnatural and doesn't involve gaining or losing status since they are simultaneously male and female, not men.
So like you might see individual culture critics finding stuff to nitpick about it as their annoyance of the week or a singular Guy here or there who thinks it's weird, but this isn't a widespread norm. The vast majority of people don't give a shit about akoshos having sex with each other. The worst thing you're likely to experience Solely by virtue of being in an akoshos-akoshos relationship is someone asking you (probably with genuine curiosity) which one does the man stuff and which one does the woman stuff.
Akoshos also don't experience Hard expectations for marriage (though there are societal pressures that make marriage an attractive safety net all the same, ESPECIALLY marriage to a man) so unofficial life-partnerships between akoshos are pretty much the Only same gender partnerships between unwed people that are going to go unquestioned. ((Sworn brotherhood is technically a same gender life partnership for men that is Functionally similar to marriage (in that it's a kin-making practice between unrelated adults), but the tradition is Built upon the assumption that both parties will be married to women and that a primary goal of this kinship is to provide security for both parties' wives and children)). Marriage obligations in general are more lax in the economically secure but not Wealthy lower mercantile classes (as obligations to support and perpetuate one's family are universal, but these obligations can be filled simply by having at least One son who can get hitched, and marriages in the lower classes have no political functions and therefore there's less reason to ensure All your children are wed (there's still incentives like dowry, but this is not desperately needed when a family is economically secure)). So akoshos in this class group tend to have a Lot more freedom in terms of their life arrangements and chosen partners (though still experience the limiting frameworks of structural misogyny in other capacities).
The only thing that is out of the picture is akoshos/akoshos marriage. Marriage in this society has a predominantly reproductive function, the concept of reproductively non-viable marriages is generally considered absurd. This is not JUST this culture's form of homophobia, as marriage is a very practical arrangement at its core - both in a reproductive capacity and as bedrock for the patriarchal blood-kinship family system that forms the core social unit. The idea of same gender marriage isn't just absurd because 'ewwww weird' it's like, that Cannot work within this system, it Cannot fill core functions of what a marriage intends to do here, the ways on which marriage and kinship are BUILT makes same gender marriage practically (rather than just socially) untenable.
The sole exception to the 'marriage = reproductively viable" rule is that akoshos can be married to men (which in practice is almost always as a remarriage after a man has secured At Least an heir). This has a Little bit of internal logic here in that they perform predominantly female social roles (thus are suited to being a wife, even if they can't bear children) (and also on practical levels of them having the same legal status as women) but it's really more of a 'this is just how it's always been' kind of thing. A lot of the older pre-Wardi identity dual-gender roles that got mashed together under the 'akoshos' name would have involved marriage to a man as a second wife/concubine, in addition to his primary wife who would bear his children. Men potentially having multiple spouses has not been retained as a cultural practice, but the notion that an akoshos Can be a wife to a man has survived into modern day legal and doctrinal practices around marriage.
So like this being said, marriage as it is legally defined is only between a man and a woman, a man and an akoshos, or a woman and an akoshos. In practice the latter two are comparatively VERY rare- a man/akoshos marriage cannot provide children (though an akoshos can practically fulfill all other obligations and duties of a wife), a woman/akoshos marriage Can provide children (and while akoshos cannot function as a male heir, these children Will take their akoshos-parent's family name (though the wife retains her father's family name)), but akoshos are legally grouped with women in terms of rights and privileges (including being permanently under legal domain of their father unless they have been legally handed off to a male husband) and Cannot provide hard power patriarchal support that this family system is built upon and therefore depends upon, which makes these marriages socio-economically insecure. They can obviously still be a good partner and parent, but this is not the same as having the Legal hard power of a patriarch.
Akoshos marrying each other would be reproductively and socially nonviable, and is treated as a similarly absurd concept to a man marrying a man or a woman marrying a woman. It's just not a part of the marriage and kinship framework, it's not a thing that you can Do.
#Akoshos are also probably like.... 1-2% of the population. Like its an Accepted gendered space but not a large one so it's less#'managed' in a lot of senses#It's actually kind of hard to 'access' the akoshos space to begin with. Like parents look for Signs In Early Childhood and most#akoshos are typically assigned their gender early.#If you don't manage to access this space there's a good chance of being Stuck as a man with any deviance from your expected#gender roles being the HIGHLY unaccepted 'male effeminacy' which is a VERY different concept than (though obviously has tensions With)#being akoshos. A lot of akoshos self-label as adults after losing support from their families in part for being '''effeminate men'''#(this is also kind of the only instance in which gender self-identification occurs on a basis that will be Broadly accepted. Though#this happens in the context of already being detached from one's familial support network and people not knowing you self-assigned)#There are also certainly Some cases where akoshos self-identify as adults and this is accepted by their fathers. For a variety#of reasons but unfortunately often it's going to be like-#'we must have missed something but whatever. glad our kid is actually supposed to be this way and isn't just effeminate'#Also much less likely to be accepted if they're an expected male heir without brothers to take up the role in their stead#And VERY unlikely in upper classes where family members are public figures. If you've been introduced as a man here you're probably#out of luck.#(Like you'll see accusations that adult-assigned akoshos are just pretending in order to disguise being male effeminates)#This position isn't freedom from gender norms or like. The equivalent of an accepted trans identity. It's its own assigned gender#space in an Expanded but strict binary with expanded but strict roles#Also the societal trends over centuries are showing signs of increasing collapse between the notions of 'effeminate man' (bad)#and 'akoshos' (normal). At this point the concepts are still very separate but the current societal trajectory is leaning towards the#akoshos role being phased out of its normalization (in tandem with Wardi culture becoming more intensely patriarchal with#the collapse of Wardi groups into one identity)#Like 600 years ago there was NOT a concept of 'effeminate man' and proto-akoshos roles were a#more central concept that enveloped divergences from expected masculinity. Whereas now the akoshos space is significantly narrower#and the concept of 'effeminate man' exists in tandem as a stigmatized descriptor. And things have gotten to the point of#people claiming that ''effeminate men'' will 'pretend' to be akoshos#The akoshos identity becoming stigmatized/phased out isn't inevitable but the tensions around it are definitely growing#Though there's also a sense that Peak Patriarchy has been hit and you're starting to see people pushing back at these norms in fairly#notable ways. There's not going to be like. A feminist revolution but civilian women getting more political freedoms (while the overall#context stays patriarchal) is a likely outcome which could also have side benefits of relaxing masculinity standards Somewhat

For reasons to be expanded upon at a later date (because I love the little bits about Boothill and possible paranoia/betrayal canon gives us so very dearly HNGH) I think Boothill like... He won't let himself fall into disrepair or anything of course, but he reeeeeeeeeeally does not like letting other people poke around at his body. It's a necessary evil to him. He does whatever maintenance and repairs he can himself. He started out with a massive knowledge deficit, simply because he didn't really have any exposure to that kind of technology until he left Aeragan-Epharshal, but he's taught himself a lot since then, he worked really hard at it!
Anyway, the point being, Boothill generally isn't super trusting of people.
But I think he would come to make an exception for Himeko, since he trusts Dan Heng a lot, and Himeko is one of Dan Heng's once-in-a-lifetime dearly beloved companions.
Himeko is so unflappable, I don't think she would even bat an eye about anything he throws at her, either. Like she enters the Parlor Car one morning (she's always the first one up) and Boothill is already there, waiting for her.
"Mornin', Madam Navigator."
"Good morning, Mr. Boothill."
And despite the fact that he blatantly broke into the Express (Pom-Pom is NOT happy about this JDKSAJDSKL), Boothill tips his hat, greets her politely, and is nothing but respectful when he says he has a favor to ask of her. Except it won't stay a favor long, of course- he has every intention of paying it back.
Himeko never agrees to things blindly, but she does bring up that all the knowledge Boothill contributed during the Charmony Festival was essential to preventing the universe from being pulled into Ena's Dream. And they were able to hold onto the Jade Abacus because Boothill used Tiernan's burial relic to summon the Galaxy Rangers instead. The Astral Express owes him a debt of gratitude, and besides, he's a friend of Dan Heng's. Of course she'll try to help him.
Boothill fidgets a bit, quickly brushes off the thanks, and tells Himeko he's having a problem with error codes. He keeps getting the same one, seemingly at random times, but the darn thing has no obvious cause. Dan Heng mentioned Himeko had been the one to rebuild the Astral Express. He knows it ain't the same, but it's not like he's askin' for any major repairs or nothin'. He was wonderin' if she could just take a look, maybe offer him some insight, since she seems to be somethin' of a mechanical wonder.
So Himeko walks him back to a another car, where she goes to tinker with machines without them crowding her bedroom. It's all neatly laid out and organized, and it only takes a second for Himeko to locate some specific device with a long cord. Instead of plugging it in herself, she holds the end of it out to him, like an offer rather than a demand, and Boothill visibly relaxes a bit. He still eyes it just a little warily for a second, but he accepts and plugs it into the port on his side.
Himeko pulls up the list of all recent errors, and they really are all the same. Boothill has had multiple temperature alarms over the past couple of weeks since the Charmony Festival, and they know it's not the environment, because Penacony is mostly dreamscape and kept mild year-round. The long-forgotten natural deserts are too far away.
Boothill is staring from the corner of his one good eye, so Himeko turns the hologram to let him see what she's doing easier. They don't appear to be false alarms. His internal temperature spikes and then slowly lowers again, high enough that if it lasted it would eventually cause damage.
One option is for her to start rooting through personal data, figuring out what he was doing at the time of each code, and tracing cause and correlation.
Instead, Himeko reads out the timestamps, and asks Boothill if he minds sharing what was happening around him when it occured.
Two weeks ago: He and Dan Heng went to explore Dreamflux Reef and found a bar- nice place, good atmosphere. Woman runninā€™ it was a doll. Boothill left fer not even two minutes to get them drinks (Dan Heng knows like nothinā€™ about liquor, Madam Navigator, can you believe this guy) and when he came back, someone had already stolen his seat and was hittinā€™ on Dan Heng! Dan Heng didn't even care, just shooed ā€˜em off. Boothill laughed and said not to let him get in his way if he wanted to meet someone. Dan Heng looked at him like he'd grown a second head. Why would he want to leave with someone else, when he came here to be with Boothill?
Twelve days ago: While laying low- er, just rustlinā€™ up some grub- in the Moment of Blue, Boothill passed Dan Heng with March and Caelus playinā€™ on the beach, buildinā€™ sandcastles and the like. When he passed by again almost two hours later, they were still out there, with Dan Heng pullinā€™ March through the water on her inner tube and Caelus hanginā€™ off the back of it. He swam so fast! You'd think he was part water snake or somethinā€™. He looked happier ā€˜n a cat in a sunbeamā€¦ He has a nice smile, doesn't he?
Eleven days ago: Boothill was killinā€™ time in Dreamflux Reef when he turned the corner down a shady alley and saw Dan Heng, surrounded by three men demandinā€™ ā€œprotection money.ā€ None of ā€˜em stood a chance, they were all on the ground before Boothill even blinked! So cool! Boothill wants to see that spear of his closeup- Anyway, Dan Heng stepped on one of ā€˜em on his way out, hahaha! Boothill stepped on the same guy a second time as he hurried to catch up.
Eight days ago: Here on the Express, actually. Boothill had mentioned beinā€™ curious about the archives, and Dan Heng personally invited him.
(ā€œI remember that day, I saw you in the hall.ā€ ā€œWas there any problem with the heating that day?ā€ ā€œNo, none. I don't think the temperature has anything to do with these error codes. I have a different theory, keep going.ā€ ā€œIf ya say so.ā€)
Boothill was fascinated by an entry on aeons, and from a single question he asked about Lan, the two of ā€˜em ended up talkinā€™ fer hours. About aeons and Paths and Emanators, Acheron and Self-Annihilators, the Sea of Nihility, Tiernan, the Nameless and the Galaxy Rangers, their burial relics and their customs. Dan Heng finally just started writinā€™ and editinā€™ the entries in real time, with Boothill pointinā€™ things out and tellinā€™ him what to add in. They were at it so late that Boothill ended up sleepin' on a couch in one of the cars.
He'd figured there had to be something to make Dan Heng chatty- he'd caught just a glimpse of it that first night they met, sittinā€™ at the bar in the Reverie together. He'll have to ask about the archives more often, if it gets him all revved up like that.
One week ago: After that night of energetic discussion, Dan Heng was apparently hyped up, because after he'd downed some of Himeko's coffee (ā€œYou had some too, right? What did you think of it?ā€ ā€œIt was great, even better'n chewinā€™ bullets!ā€ "Thank you! That was my newest brew, I can't wait for everyone else to try it.") he actually asked Boothill to go hunting with him. Boothill asked who their target was, and was surprised when Dan Heng pulled out photos that looked like they were from March's camera, of all things, instead of a bounty or wanted poster.
And as he sat there, studying these pictures, Dan Heng explained that he wanted to hunt down these specific memory zone memes to record them into the archives. Planets with so much memoria are a rarity, especially with the Stellaron's activity thrown into the mix, which has surely affected the local ā€œwildlife.ā€ He might not get another opportunity like this for a long time. And Boothill had talked last night about his extensive expertise in tracking and hunting, so he should have plenty to offer here, Dan Heng would like to learn from his experience and see how he does things!
And oh, Madam Navigator, by the time Dan Heng was done speakin', his eyes were practically sparklin'! Just lit up like the sun! Boothill could scarcely believe it! The two of them couldn't even wait another day, they set out that very morning. It had been a long, long while since Boothill had tracked someone- er, somethinā€™- without the intent to capture or kill. It wasā€¦actually really nice. Nostalgic, but in a good way. It might even have been his favorite day on Penaconyā€¦soā€¦farā€¦
Boothill trails off as a couple of realizations crash into him. All the temperature alarms he's spoken about thus far- they've all happened in the company of Dan Heng. And now that he's thinking about it, he's pretty sure even the ones he hasn't yet talked about were with him, too. Dan Heng has been responsible for all of his error codes, every. single. one.
The screen in front of Himeko suddenly refreshes to the top of the list, displaying a new notification for the current time. Alert! Core temperature above normal range.
Himeko's knowing smile is sly as a snake.
Wwwwwelp, would ya look at the time, Boothill has some errands to meet, people to run, yā€™know how it is, he should really get goin'-
ā€œOh, Mr. Boothill? About that favor.ā€ And Boothill jolts to a stop in the doorway because fudge, he can't just leave without hearing her out. He'd given his word. He has no problem running out on someone he thinks deserves it, but Himeko really had been kind to him to try and help him out. Her voice is just as knowing as her smile, Boothill can't turn around to look at her, or else he knows he won't be able to disguise the sound of his cooling fans kicking on.
ā€œDon't make Dan Heng wait too long, ok~?ā€
ā€œY-Yes, ma'am.ā€

something Iā€™ve been thinking abt is how many people think Makoto is immune to despair. I donā€™t think he is. I think becoming the ultimate Hope was BECAUSE he felt despair. He wouldnā€™t have fully reached that point without Junko. Makoto becoming such a beacon was his last attempt to avoid completely falling and it wasnā€™t because he didnā€™t feel despair, it was because he was too damn stubborn to allow everything to go to waste and he refused to sacrifice his beliefs for someone elseā€™s. His inner monologue tells me he DID experience the same new low the other suvivors did in the final trial, but at the point where he had the choice to give up and die, he looked at the others and he looked at Junko and he couldnā€™t allow it to happen, not out of self preservation, but because the idea that Junko would have control over their lives made him FURIOUS. and that utter refusal to die kicked in, wether luck or otherwise, and he made the concious effort for one last push while something in him was breaking. He had to be broken in order for the Ultimate Hope to come through so aggressively, bc it could only exist in the face of the Ultimate Despair. He snapped the same way she did, but in the other direction. In what could have been his final moments he chose to embody everything Junko wasnā€™t, and every single optimistic and luck fueled ideal in him suddenly charged forward and pushed him. It was a combination of the final straw and a choice. Makoto isnā€™t immune to feeling despair, heā€™s just too stubborn to fall into it of his own volition. I think thatā€™s why I like that scene in DR3 so much. People were SO SHOCKED Makoto actually fell for the tape, that he actually became despair for a moment. I saw people getting mad or disappointed, saying it was pathetic and Makoto seemed to fall from some sort of pedestal for them. Honestly part of me wonders if that sort of mentality, which clearly people had in universe, affected Makoto a bit. Like he started to see himself as less of a person, subconsciously. Prompting him to take more risks, less self preservation, act way more bold. It seems he has to be reminded a lot not to put himself in danger by his friends, to not do something too reckless. All over the place I would see in regards to that scene either this frivolous ā€˜oh this was just angst drama with no meaning behind itā€™ or ā€˜he can do better than that. heā€™s so weakā€™ or ā€˜come on, thereā€™s no way heā€™d fall into despair, heā€™s the Ultimate Hope!ā€™ This kind of mentality, which was kind of ironic considering Ryota was there the entire time saying the same thing and treating Makoto the same way. Like Makoto was superhuman. Like Makoto didnā€™t feel despair the same way ā€˜normal peopleā€™ did. In a way that was also how Munakata saw Makoto. Makoto stopped being a PERSON to the world when he became Ultimate Hope, he became a concept, a belief system, much the same way Junko ascended beyond herself. But the difference is that treating Makoto that way is the opposite of the reason Makoto became such a representative for hope. He wasnā€™t doing something no one else could. He was doing something everyone had the chance to, he justā€¦ was a little more optimistic, a little more stubborn, a little more ā€˜gung-hoā€™ about things. He just took the lead where no one else did, where no one else knew they even COULD in the face of Junkoā€™s unstoppable force. She had overcome the biggest threats and obstacles in the world, what could one person do? And the answer Makoto found was, anything. Everything. It doesnā€™t all rest on Makoto, heā€™s just the one that was inspired to try to do what seemed like the impossible. But as evidenced by the change in his friends after that trial, itā€™s clearly not something only Makoto is capable of. The others pulled out of despair thanks to Makoto, but it was their choice to do so.
ā€œButā€¦ this world is so huge, and weā€™re so small. What can we doā€¦? No, we can probably do anything. Yeah! We can do anything!ā€
#makoto naegi#Danganronpa character analysis#Danganronpa#danganronpa thh#danganronpa future arc#I fucking love Makoto Naegi man.#I think thereā€™s a fine line of nuance to Makoto thatā€™s easy to miss bc he doesnā€™t really make it known#heā€™s not a pushover and heā€™s not overpowered. heā€™s a people pleaser but he will say what needs to be said#heā€™s an immovable object and the exact opposite of Junko but heā€™s also just a normal guy whoā€™s optimistic and (un)lucky#he isnā€™t invincible but he has immense power to his words the same way Junko did#if anything his superpower is being kind above all else. heā€™s compassionate to some of the worst people in the world.#he was even conpassionatr to an extent to Junko. he didnt want her to kill herself despite everything sheā€™s done#and he still acknowledges that for years she was a classmate and friend.#I do think the more he learned abt what she did the more heā€™s come to actually hate her though#post the first game he always refers to her without a suffix to her name which is one of the most subtle rude things you can do#it means you have zero respect for the person youā€™re referring to#and he speaks about her with some venom he doesnā€™t use for anyone else in the future arc#heā€™s not incapable of feeling negative emotions#I really liked the future arc scene bc it showed that Makoto DID experience enough despair to have overcome him if he didnā€™t refuse#and that it still affects him deeply. people treat him like heā€™s either this perfect ideal Chad or this baby chick whoā€™s so delicate#and no one really focuses on how makoto shoulders so much and yet is still vulnerable.#honestly that guy was DUE for a mental breakdown even without the tape. it would have happened eventually#I actually wrote one based on him finally hitting a breaking point after giving so much of himself away and keeping nothing for himself#that his issues that he shoves down constantly finally canā€™t be held down anymore. Hajime helps him bc he knows how that feels#it was a LONG time ago that I wrote that but honestly if I can remember where i was going w it I might finish it#it was initially an rp but I could make it a fic#anyway. the point is Makoto is SO much more complex than people give him credit for#the most fundamental thing about him is that heā€™s normal and thatā€™s ok! thatā€™s what helps him rise!

Jasico Bingo Challenge: Cuddles
ā€œI wouldnā€™t call that cuddling,ā€ Nico says, arms crossed defensively over his chest. ā€œI would call it sitting near one another.ā€Ā
Across the infirmary, awaiting medical attention from the busy Apollo kids, Annabeth rolls her eyes. ā€œHe had his arm around you.ā€Ā
ā€œYou put your arm around me all the time,ā€ Nico rebuts.Ā
ā€œYou were leaning on him!ā€Ā
ā€œI was tired!ā€Ā
Annabeth slumps sideways in her cot and stares at him, unimpressed.Ā
Nico refuses to budge. Cuddling is not resting your head on someone when they offer to let you nap on them! Cuddling is, like, prolonged, sideways hugging, or something. He and Jason do not cuddle, and even if they did (which they do not!) they wouldnā€™t do it at the campfire, for Heraā€™s sake.Ā
ā€œFine,ā€ Annabeth concedes without averting her intimidating gaze. ā€œWhat about when you two took a nap under Thaliaā€™s Pine? That was definitely cuddling.ā€Ā
Heat rises up to Nicoā€™s ears. He turns around to face the countertop, littered with empty bandaid packaging and unportioned nectar. ā€œIt was not, and youā€™re weird for remembering that.ā€Ā
ā€œYouā€™re weird for refusing to admit you like cuddling with Jason,ā€ Annabeth says. Sheā€™s long since perfected that Iā€™m right, youā€™re wrong, shut up tone, the one that makes Nico bristle.Ā
ā€œHow does that make me weird?ā€ he grumbles, slicing even squares into the pan of nectar. ā€œI spent the last, like, four years of my life doing everything I could to avoid human contact. How is it weird that I wouldnā€™t want to admit to something like that.ā€Ā
For a few moments, Nico almost mistakes Annabethā€™s silence for a victory. He finishes with the nectar and turns back around, ready to gloat and everything, and is instead met with the worst possible thing: Annabeth Chase wearing her planning face.Ā
ā€œNo,ā€ he says immediately, putting a hand out, as if he can physically ward off whatever bullshit heā€™s about to get dragged into. ā€œNo.ā€Ā
ā€œI think we need an outside opinion.ā€Ā
ā€œI think youā€™re concussed, do not go spreading my personal business to camp!ā€Ā
ā€œNot camp,ā€ Annabeth flaps her hand at him, and does not refute the concussed accusation. ā€œBut definitely some trusted individuals, who have insight into your cuddling habits.ā€Ā
ā€œIā€™m not above getting on my knees and begging you to drop this,ā€ Nico says. Heā€™s fully serious. He will do it. Anything to stop this from going any further, anything.Ā
Annabeth glances him up and down, like sheā€™s sizing up how serious he might be.Ā
He clasps his hands together.Ā
She flops back in the cot. ā€œNope. Iā€™m too invested now. I think Iā€™ll ask Hazel, first-ā€Ā
ā€œDude-ā€Ā
ā€œ-and then Connor, he knew you when you were a baby, heā€™ll have some good insight.ā€Ā
Nico buries his face in his hands and groans.Ā
Annabeth Chase gets her concussion treated, then turns around and runs back to her cabin to draft an honest to the gods survey to hand out to what she deems as a trusted, reputable group.Ā
Any group with Connor Stoll and Percy Jackson in it is anything but reputable, in Nicoā€™s mind. As soon as he hears that Annabethā€™s really gone off the freaking deep end about this, he finds the darkest corner of camp and hunkers down to hide.Ā
The best thing to do when Annabethā€™s got an idea? Weather it. Sheā€™ll either find her own solution, or sheā€™ll lose interest. Nico hopes, for his reputation's sake, she doesnā€™t get any further than the distribution.Ā
Upside to this shitshow: Nico has time to clean his cabin, finally. A valid reason to tell Will that he genuinely cannot come do archery practice today, a valid reason to kick any and everyone off his porch, lock his doors, and play CDs on his radio as loud as he can tolerate.Ā
It is, unfortunately, one of his most productive days as of late, and as Nico lays on his newly-swept floor, sweaty but satisfied, he almost forgets the whole situation occurring at the hands of one stubborn daughter of Athena.Ā
Almost.Ā
ā€œNico?ā€Ā
Three knocks on the cabin door.Ā
ā€œI can hear your music, I know youā€™re in there. If you want me to go away, thatā€™s totally fine, I just- yā€™know, want to make sure youā€™re okay. Iā€™ll leave you alone in a minute.ā€Ā
Nico rolls over, squishing his face into the hardwood for one deeply satisfying moment. Then, with all the reluctance of a man who is going to face embarrassment head on, he pulls himself up and trudges to the door.Ā
Jason, at the very least, has the decency to look worried rather than amused. Heā€™s got his hands in the pockets of his shorts, his head tilted off to the side, his glasses off-center like they always are. Heā€™s frowning, kind of. He looks like Mrs. Oā€™Leary when Nico tricks her into thinking heā€™s got a treat for her.Ā
ā€œIā€™m alive,ā€ he says, as dry as he can manage. The CD skips.Ā
ā€œThatā€™s good,ā€ Jason says. ā€œI, uh, hear Annabethā€™s keeping herself occupied.ā€Ā
Nicoā€™s temple pulses with something not-quite-achey, but nearly there.Ā
ā€œJust- come in,ā€ he huffs, stepping aside. Dammit. ā€œIf anyoneā€™s going to explain it, I would really rather rip the stupid bandaid off.ā€Ā
ā€œLaughing at me feels kind of insulting, going to be honest,ā€ Nico mutters while Jason hunches over himself, cradling his stomach, downright howling.Ā
ā€œSheā€™s- Sheā€™s up in arms- about cuddling!?ā€Ā
ā€œI donā€™t know! I donā€™t know, Percyā€™s stupid bullshit is rubbing off on her and sheā€™s losing braincells, Jason, sheā€™s losing her mind. We need to find something new for her to build so she stops trying to instigate shit in my private life!ā€Ā
Jason slumps sideways onto the floor, half-laughing, half-panting. His leg presses solidly to Nicoā€™s like this, sitting side by side against his bed.Ā
Nico turns his head up and away and forces himself not to notice.Ā
ā€œShe just cares about you,ā€ Jason says. He stays down. Nico can practically feel how hard Jasonā€™s heart is pumping from all that laughter.Ā
Jerk.Ā
ā€œShe cares about drama,ā€ Nico says, though he knows itā€™s not totally true. Piper has gotten her more involved in the social life of camp, which is a good thing, really. Nico thinks itā€™s really cool that Annabeth has been able to come out of her own shell, after spending her whole life trying to prove herself, trying to be above everything, better than, the best.Ā
But does she have to do it at his expense?Ā
He rubs his hands over his face and sighs.Ā
Jason sits back up.Ā
ā€œAre you really that upset about this?ā€ he asks, his voice softened into a tone Nico got used to hearing in the days post-Cupid, the tone of a hero. ā€œI know itā€™s still hard for you, to be comfortable and everything-ā€Ā
ā€œIā€™m not upset about it,ā€ Nico says. Admitting it makes his cheeks flush, but itā€™s the truth, and Jason has more than earned that with him. ā€œIā€™m justā€¦embarrassed.ā€Ā
ā€œAwe, whyā€™s it embarrassing? I mean, I get from your perspective, yā€™know, why you might find that embarrassing, but even if taking naps and stuff is cuddling, itā€™s not like itā€™s hurting anything,ā€ Jason says. Then, softer, maybe hesitant, he adds, ā€œright?ā€Ā
Nicoā€™s heart tugs annoyingly into his ribs. ā€œItā€™s not hurting anything, Jason, Iā€™m notā€¦I donā€™t know. I just feel a lot of things, I guess? And itā€™s a lot of, like, I-I donā€™t know how to react, when people poke fun at something Iā€™m still- still getting comfortable with. I like being comfortable with you.ā€ He pokes at the rips in his jeans and continues to ignore how much of Jason is pressed up against his side, how natural it feels to just sit with him like this.Ā
ā€œI like that you like being comfortable with me,ā€ Jason says, his own version of teasing, though one that Nico knows and understands and likes. He knows that Jasonā€™s reassuring him by prodding at him like that.Ā
The next track on his CD starts to playā€”Jason turned the volume down, but didnā€™t shut it all the way off. Theyā€™re both too awkward in pure silence, but sitting together when thereā€™s other background noise that means they donā€™t necessarily have to talk has become a staple of their hang-outs. Thereā€™ve been many an afternoon where Nico sets up on the floor of the Zeus cabin with his new, growing Mythomagic collection, while Jason sketches out temples at his desk.Ā
Theyā€™re so comfortable around one another, nowadays.Ā
Nico brings his knees up and nestles his chin on them, frowning at the opposite wall.Ā
Are they maybe too comfortable? If other people are starting to look at them interacting and put weird labels like cuddling on it? Isnā€™t cuddling something people who like each other do, anyway? Friends donā€™t cuddle.Ā
Nico feels his ears burn hot at the implication. Is that what Annabeth was trying to say? Does she think Nico likes Jason?Ā
He brings his arms up to cover his mouth. He chews on his lip.Ā
ā€¦does, Nico like Jason?Ā
Ā (to be continued)Ā

Kinda started rereading Dressrosa and... Although I always chalked up the similarities between Crocodile's plan to take over Alabasta and how Doflamingo took over Dressrosa as nothing but Oda reusing similar plot elements but in a slightly different way (just to show us what could've become of Alabasta had Croc gotten away with his schemes, what Luffy helped prevent from happening to begin with)...
Robin's reaction to hearing the story of Dressrosa and HOW Doflamingo took over the country, that simple little "...!!", actually does kind of speak volumes
Tumblr media
Like if you wanted canonical evidence to Crocodile having been "inspired" by Doflamingo, then yeah, Robin would be The Person who would pick up on that, she'd be the person who'd be like "hey, that story sounds awfully familiar to what Crocodile did", since he was her boss
Do want to note that, timeline-wise, Doflamingo only took over Dressrosa 10 years ago, where as Crocodile had been Scheming and establishing his position as the Hero of Alabasta for 16 years. Like Croc's intent to obtain Pluton and create his military nation utopia absolutely pre-dates Doffy's takeover, so that wasn't and can't have been inspired by Doflamingo at all. It's more just the plan and method Crocodile ended up going with (framing the king (through a bloodbath) and putting the country in a position without a ruler where he could just yoink it for himself with ease) where the similarity becomes more obvious. But it is also kind of where it ends. Doflamingo wanted Dressrosa because he felt like he was entitled to the island (as his family had been its original rulers and he was a Tenryuubito), and was using the island for his own gains (Smile manufacturing etc, for his dealings with Kaidou), all while having a great distain and hatred of the world and how he had been "wronged" (=Tenryuubito rights revoked). Meanwhile... yeah, Crocodile wanted to create a "utopia", only targetting Alabasta because he believed Pluton was there and because Pluton would be needed for his ideal military nation. That minor difference and Crocodile's clear and great distain and hatred of Doflamingo combined...
Yeah, I dunno, this is just interesting to me. God I need Robin and Crocodile to have a lil reunion chat
