i feel like perhaps shondaland is setting up for theloise. even if theo wasn’t in this season… traces of him were still around? they made subtle references. the book in the drawer. things eloise said that mirror her conversations with theo. how broken she looked when colin said she’d never been in love. the reference to emma (idk if you’re familiar with the story but emma and harriet literally have a fight bc emma ruins harriet’s relationship with a farmer of lower class).

he wasn’t there but in essence, eloise’s story was still deeply tied with his.

it feels like they’re testing the waters and taking time to write out her story. or they’re teasing bc they know it’ll increase the hype. maybe i’m being optimistic but i do feel like there’s still a chance? besides. calam lynch has such “period drama male lead” potential :’)

i don’t think bringing theo in as some long lost heir to a lord would do their story service. it HAS to be eloise breaking out of the society mould and joining likeminded people in a pursuit to revolutionise society and rights for women and the marginalised. their last conversation was theo accusing her of only “dipping her toes in his waters” and not fully committing to the “radicalism” she claims to enjoy. so her story moving forward has to be her committing to her beliefs and actually fighting for something bigger than the superficial and discriminatory ton. she needs to embrace her rebellion in its entirety and make her society understand and embrace it too.

I said that this scene was important for Feyre not because of ANYTHING that had to do with Rhys. This scene was important to Feyre because she needed to learn how to rely on herself. She was used to relying on Tamlin or Rhysand in her new life. So much so that she forgot she relied on herself and her instincts most of her life. Feyre wanted to be apart of the war coming. She wanted to help. So she needed to learn how to be collected and calm and rely on herself in order to survive. In war it’s messy. It’s dangerous. You are risking your life every second. Every choice you make risks your life. Now, was this scene dangerous? Yes. Could Rhys have taught her this an easier way? Yes. BUT you need to remember that this scene was in order to prepare to go steal the Book from Tarquin. Would that be an easier situation to be in? No. Would it be less dangerous? No. So, as much as I felt for Feyre. As much as I wish Rhys did it differently, I understand why. He didn’t do it to “prove her love” the ring just happened to be there. And, let’s not forget that Rhys was there the WHOLE time. Do you really think that he’d just let her die? He would’ve stepped in if she needed but he can’t coddle her. She needed to learn to stand on her own two feet.

Rhysand UTM was terrible. He was cruel. He was a monster. Because he HAD to be. He had to play his part to free Pyrithan. He is a morally grey character and they do things that most people don’t agree with that’s the whole point.

I’ve stated my opinion on the pregnancy situations many times. But basically, I think the whole situation was utter bullshit and SJM using Feyres pregnancy to give Nesta a redemption arc was bullshit.

Rhys not telling Feyre about the pregnancy and trying to find a way to fix the situation wasn’t okay. Madja should’ve told her. Rhys should’ve told her. Everyone should’ve told her. I really wish we got the pregnancy from their povs just to get into their heads and thought processes.

so, the saint martin's press boycott.

I was offline for a few days a week or two ago and during that time SMP made an (okay) statement, R4A deliberated and eventually accepted terms and declared an end to the boycott, people got mad at R4A because the statement wasn't good enough, R4A panicked a bit and basically ended up disbanding/deleting their content. I don't know all the details of everything, but here's some summarised thoughts, since I have been one of the only people posting about the boycott on here:

firstly - I did see SMP's statement and think, eh, it was better than their previous ones, but it was still noticeably very vague on the catalyst of all this (it mentions Islamophobia and Gaza but it's not really centred or as emphatic as it could be) - so I totally understand people being angry that it was seen as good enough. The boycott is because of anti-Palestinian bigotry and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

However, people upset at R4A started claiming that there were no Palestinians/Muslims in R4A, that it was all white people, which are both untrue. There were accusations of sucking up to SMP bc people want arcs/money and typical internet dogpiling and threats, which is... not really productive at all, to say the least, and starts to drown out reasonable criticisms.

Some people (the ones that feel safe enough to come forward, which is not everyone, due to said threats) have come out and discussed exactly why R4A decided to end the boycott. Mari's video here is worth watching - essentially it's that SMP clearly made massive steps to meet the demands, and the ones they didn't they're legally not able to (ie any explicit reference to the employee or what they said would probably get them sued).

A large group of (primarily bipoc) SMP authors have started talking about how they were working behind the scenes to urge SMP to respond - and reiterated that yeah, there's no legal way for them to comment on what the employee said and did.

I think most people understand strikes/boycotts are about negotiation, not necessarily getting every single demand. And it's an immense achievement to get a major publisher to respond and make changes. The way R4A fell apart at the end is pretty disappointing - they genuinely had the platform to make a lot of change going forward, and I hope that the change that was made isn't going to be undone because of that.

It kind of seems like the people who are encouraging continuing to boycott have changed from a marketing boycott in order to bring change to just a 'this company did a bad thing so don't engage with it ever' boycott. Which is valid, but said company has no incentive to meet the demands in that case.

But I also totally understand the opinion that the point of this - racism against Palestinians amidst a genocide - has been pushed to the side. It's extremely reasonable to be angry while watching an ongoing genocide. It's very reasonable to want someone with such despicable views to be fired (even if there's no actionable way to make that happen, and that was never an r4a demand). SMP also hasn't made any kind of statement about the unsolicited sex toys they sent people either, so like....there's that too.

I haven't decided exactly what I'll do - I've only read two SMP books since this started and tbh there's only a handful of other SMP books I'm interested in reading. But I'm considering, if I do decide to post those, donating the cost of a book to a GFM/esim/etc any time I read/review a SMP book. That feels like the most direct thing to bring things back to the point.

Dottore making a medicine that actually does work!! you can move around like normal, no longer as tired, and ofcourse- Dottore is thrilled. He’s done it, he kisses them and he takes reader everywhere, every single place he wanted to- he checked everything, they were fine…until suddenly, they fainted and he basically finds out that the medicine could only make everything good for a short amount of time before putting reader in the most excruciating pain possible after, so sadly, zandik curses himself and gets back to work :(( he dosent care about the sacrifices, he dosent care what he has to give and what gets taken away as long as you don’t. He’s a committed man and he’s committed for until after life. Literally will reincarnate with you if he can because he will *not* let go.

TO THE FLUFF THOUGH! zandik taking atleast 1 hour everyday to do something that you like because he realizes that you miss him (and he misses you too). At first he was wary because he wanted to ensure that he could get you cured as soon as possible, but he couldn’t handle it if you were all sad and gloomy either. He didn’t want you to think of yourself as a burden and god forbid, you try to leave again (referring to that one ask where reader leaves bc they feel like a burden,, in feel like he’s be so damn scared…even if he won’t admit it). It was always a pain when bad weather came around, specifically thunderstorms. There were a few members scared of them, some more than others and it would result in the older ones to look after them, even if they were scared themselves.

Thunderstorms didn’t scare you as much and although you weren’t part of the unnie line, you still provided comfort to others, including the older ones.

“In case of a blackout, there’s some candles and flashlights in the cabinet.” Yves stated as she stood up, making her way over to the cabinet she was referring to and opening it for everyone to see. The mention of a potential blackout only seemed to further worry Choerry and as you looked over at her, you picked up on that. Her leg was bouncing and her arms were crossed. You’ve always paid close attention to her and her mannerisms.

See, you and Choerry may not have had the closest relationship due to you both being complete opposites, but that didn’t mean you didn’t care for her. If anything, you cared too much for her. Part of the reason being the fact that you have feelings for her and that she’s one of your members. It was expected of you to care for her. The issue is that you were so closed off when it came to her and she never knew why, but you knew very well why.

“I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight.” Choerry murmured, to which you chuckled lightly. “It’s just rain, you’ll be fine.” You reassured before standing up and heading to your room, separating yourself from everyone. She watched you the whole way until you were out of sight.

“Don’t worry Yerim, you’ll be okay.” Haseul spoke softly as she patted her on the head, smiling. “Y/N is probably going to sleep in another room so she doesn’t have to deal with me.” Choerry half-heartedly joked, causing the others to let out a few laughs while shaking their head at her comment.

Unbeknownst to you, Choerry would often get hurt at your coldness towards her. She would see how you’d react to some of the other members and wondered why you wouldn’t be as warm with her as you were with them. There were also quite a few times where her feelings got hurt because of tone of your words.

After your departure, everyone eventually retreated back to their shared rooms and went on about their day. Soon enough, you heard a knock at the door and the only person you could think of it being, was Choerry.

“It’s your room too, Yerim.” You stated, not bothering to look up to the door and continuing to read your book. The door opened and there stood an awkward Choerry. “Right, sorry.” She spoke sheepishly, avoiding any possible eye contact with you and made her way to her side of the room.

You didn’t even acknowledge her and to her, it definitely stung but she chose to brush it off since that’s just how you were. However, she didn’t know that you were still able to see her in your peripheral vision, a small smile on your face as you noticed her trying to get comfortable in her bed.

You both were just doing your own thing and due to the silence on the other side of the room, you assumed she was just on her phone. It was like that for a few hours and you’re sure at one point she actually fell asleep, but woke up after there was noise heard from outside of the room. It was around 8pm, and that usually signaled that someone was cooking in the kitchen.

However, that wouldn’t be the only sound to be heard when a booming noise came from outside, startling Choerry. You heard some screams coming from the kitchen so you assumed it scared a few of the girls as well.

You looked over at Choerry, who now had the blanket over her head. You knew how terrified she was of thunderstorms and you honestly felt bad, really bad.

Another rumble from the sky was heard and a whimper followed after that. You were certain that the sound came from Choerry and it only made you feel worse, wanting nothing more but to hold her and assure her that’s everything is okay.

“Choerry..” You whispered, causing her to slowly lower the blanket to where only her eyes were visible. You found that incredibly adorable but you didn’t let that distract you from your original motive, which was to comfort her.

“You should come over here, I know you’re not a big fan of thunderstorms.” You continued as you lifted up your covers, that were just waiting for her to get under.. You could tell she was very hesitant.

“Why do you care?” She asked, her voice much lower than you’re used to. Hearing that felt like a direct hit to the heart. If only she knew how much you truly cared.

“Because I do, now you can come here or i’m coming to you.” You spoke, your tone cold but a slight softness to it. Before Choerry could say anything back, lightning struck and thunder followed, causing her to scream and cover her ears. “Guess i’m coming to you.” You mumbled to yourself before pulling the covers off you and stepping out of bed.

You made your way over to her and kneeled down once you reached her bed. “Can you move over, please?” You asked, to which she scooted over without saying anything. You climbed under the covers, sitting up and facing her.

You opened your mouth to say something but of course, you were interrupted by another roar outside. Choerry immediately held onto you and hid her head in your neck, completely catching you off guard. Your hands were awkwardly ghosting over her until you snapped back into reality when another whimper left her mouth, causing you to wrap your arms around her.

She gripped onto your shirt tighter as a way to prevent you from leaving. As if you’d leave her especially in a time like this. If anything, you would stay here for as long as she wished, and also because you wanted to.

“I’m not going anywhere, I promise.” You whispered into her hair, using your free hand to caress it. You were holding her very closely as the commotion outside continued. You were sure it was going to go on for awhile, but you were willing to comfort her for the time being.

“Why are you doing this?” Choerry whispered, clearly confused by your actions. The question confused you at first, but you understood why she would question your actions.

“Because I want to, Yerim.” You spoke, coming off harsher than you had intended to, which was not at all. She muttered a small ‘sorry’ and went quiet. You realized how you sounded and mentally facepalmed yourself.

“No, I’m sorry..” You softened your tone, causing her to lift her head from your neck and look at you. “Why are you apologizing?” She asked as her eyebrows furrowed and she placed her hand on yours. Such a simple action, yet it made your heart skip a beat. The fact that she always remained sweet to you despite you not being the same towards her, was mind boggling to you and it only further affirmed the feelings you felt for her.

“I’m always so cold towards you and I truly don’t mean to be.” You began, looking down and avoiding eye contact with her. Even though you couldn’t see her, you could tell she was listening attentively once she squeezed your hand gently.

“I just- I like you so much and I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to handle and process my feelings, and I know it seems that I don’t care about you but I really do. More than you could ever know.” You confessed, feeling significantly more self-conscious now that you’ve let everything out.

A few seconds of silence passed and you slowly looked up to see her reaction, fearful of what it might be but still curious. You were met with a smile and it caused your lips to curve into a smile. Her smile was contagious on its own.

“I feel the same way..” She admitted and your eyebrows furrowed. Of course, you were more than ecstatic, but you didn’t understand how she could reciprocate the feelings when you didn’t treat her as warmly as you should’ve.

“I know what you’re thinking, but there’s a reason for why i’m more sensitive when it comes to you.” She continued after noticing your visible confusion. “But-“ You didn’t have a chance to finish when lips connected with yours, leaving you stunned. Before you could reciprocate, Choerry pulled back.

“I’m so sorry!“ She quickly apologized, feeling extremely flustered. “I thought-“ She was interrupted by you cupping her face and placing your lips on hers, once again. She melted into the kiss and you did the same. It felt magical and butterflies were erupting in your stomach.

Eventually, you both pulled away with a smile and put your foreheads together. You couldn’t help but giggle and she joined in, softly shoving you until you fell back onto the pillows. She laid next to you and rested her head on her hand, smiling down at you. Your found yourself blushing when you noticed the loving gaze she was sending your way. Words could not express how you felt at that moment.

I don’t know if this has been discussed to death already since I wasn’t around when it first aired but… Nero didn’t give Sporus a ring. It was the other way around. Tradition dictated that the wife of the Emperor would present him with a ring at the feast of Calendas, so it was sort of the public confirmation of Sporus as Poppea brought back to life. Unless they meant a wedding ring?

secondly i mean yeah tom was def referring to a wedding ring, which adds to the whole air of like. either tom is reading a book full of misinfo/historians postulating with dodgy sources, or he's just editorializing to fit his own life bc there's also nothing out there irl that suggests poppea's death was related to stairs. like that's tom's thing that he said bc he was kinning nero too hard and had au kin memories or something. so it makes sense that it's also tom's own idea, coming from his modern perspective of course, that nero would give sporus a wedding ring to symbolize the union. he's just emphasizing to greg in the moment that the characters that he's relating back to the two of them are capital M Married.

but also.. ok obviously nero and sporus's actual history is not a 1:1 and the real significance is what tom gets from the story, which is to say a mirror into his own life and a way to see himself in history and not feel afraid of his homosexuality bc he gets to look at it through a roman context, etc. it's how he bends it to communicate something to greg. but looking into it i found something pretty fucking interesting that i feel like i've never seen discussed either:

which is like... really just another point on how convoluted all these in-universe meta parallels are bc that feels like it could simultaneously be a shiv equivalent that's in some ways more accurate than poppea, since it actually happened before sporus, but also like a better greg equivalent than sporus? like if tom's relating roman history to himself didn't have to involve a wife dying, pythagoras might've been the allegory he brought up to greg instead. or maybe not bc it wouldn't have allowed tom to retain his masculinity in the situation.

idk but yeah this is crazy and i would also love to see some fic or art or something where sporus-greg gives tom a ring. but at the same time maybe i wouldn't since the real ring in question was not a romantic one. but maybe also that doesn't matter bc it's not like the irl nero and sporus were very romantic anyway and it's all about what they get from the story etc etc

Title: galaxy on fire Pairing: Thrawn x OFC Rating: M (eventually) Warnings: violence, torture, blood (eventual mentions of past assault, slavery. eventual sexually explicit content) Other Things: Enemies to friends to lovers, SLOW BURN, both the Empire and Rebels suck, touched starved, competency kink… I don’t know what else lol Summary: Born into slavery on the Outer Rim, Celena thinks she finally has a surefire plan to buy her freedom from a Hutt crime family. But everything goes wrong when she’s caught by Imperials and accused of being a Rebel and just when she thinks things can’t get any worse she meets a certain Grand Admiral…

Note: This may or may not be the start of a longer fic. I’ve had this idea in my head for a while now and I haven’t posted fic in YEARS because normally I don’t want to post anything that’s not finished and I don’t finish anything but… idk. Here I am, lol. I like the idea of someone just trying to exist in this galaxy with no ties or love for either side. I know that most fic on here that people want is x reader fics but as I sometimes tldr introspection I don’t think I can pull that off for an x reader fic because I don’t want to tell anyone how to feel lol. So enjoy I guess, maybe I’ll write more. I might also rewrite this bc I’m not happy with it. I just wanted to bang this intro out and see what happens so… BASICALLY I DON’T KNOW WHAT I’M DOING!!

Note 2: Also I realize that this is like confessing to sins but I haven’t read the new Thrawn trilogy. I am an expanded universe girlie and I have never emotionally recovered from them axing all of that. I’ve based this Thrawn mostly off Rebels with the EU in the back of my mind. Will I read those books? Maybe? I know Zhan wrote them and I trust him but I am a bitter, petty, salty bitch SOOOOO. There will likely be some references to things and characters from the EU (most likely Mara Jade and Thrawn’s reasons for joining the Empire). Sorry not sorry. If when I read the canon books I may incorporate parts of that. IDK.

PRELUDE

“I will ask you again, Rebel Scum,” Governor Pryce’s voice was cold as ice. “Where are the Rebels who sent you?!”

Celena’s ears were ringing and her vision was blurry. They had been like this for hours, with her strapped to a gurney and Pryce torturing her and yelling, demanding to know who sent her. It would have been funny if it hadn’t been so painful, the fact Pryce was so convinced that Celena was with the Rebellion when in fact she hated the Rebellion.

Almost as much as she hated the Empire.

Celena had been caught trying to steal a weapons cache just outside of the Imperial base on Lothal. The most curious thing about it was she had been alone. It was daring to be sure but it raised the question of who sent her. She was human, late twenties with brown skin and long almost wild dark hair. She would have been beautiful if she hadn’t been strapped down and covered in blood and grime. 

“I already told you,” Celena raised her head to look up at Pryce. Her head was throbbing from the gash in it and she could feel blood trickling down her cheek. “I’m not with the Rebels.” “Do you really expect me to believe that?” Pryce leaned closer to her. 

“I don’t care what you believe,” Celena winces. “It’s the truth.”

Pryce sighs overexaggeratedly and takes a step back. “There are other ways of making you talk,” she gestures to the IT-O hovering in the corner of the room. “I simply wanted to give you the opportunity to say it on your own terms.”

“Wow,” Celena rolls her eyes. “How generous of you. With all the torture I totally missed how nice you are.”

Pryce’s nostrils flare and she hits the button controlling the shock treatment, sending another course of electricity and pain through Celena’s entire body. Celena tries to hold back her scream but fails and her scream seems to only make Pryce more excited. Almost like she was getting off on this. 

“I’ll give you one more chance or this is going to get very painful for you,” Pryce says menacingly. “Where are the Rebels who sent you?”

Celena can tell Pryce is getting annoyed and she can’t help but be amused by that. A smirk tugs on her lips one that seems to make Pryce even more annoyed. “Do your worst.”

Pryce snarls, she’s about to bring over the IT-0 droid when the doors to the room slide open. She freezes when she sees who has entered the room. “Grand Admiral,” Pryce tenses slightly. 

“Is this the thief?” Thrawn says, not even looking at Pryce, instead his attention is on Celena. 

Celena doesn’t say anything, she just looks at Thrawn. Her eyes narrow slightly as he moves to stand in front of her. She doesn’t seem impressed or scared of him. 

“I was just about to use the serum on her,” Pryce replies.

“You’ve been questioning her for hours Governor,” Thrawn is still looking at Celena. “And she has yet to break. Perhaps you are losing your touch.”

“I just need more time Grand Admi–” Pryce is cut off by Thrawn raising a hand to silence her. 

“You are done here Governor, you may go,” Thrawn says dismissively. Pryce bristles slightly, for a moment it looks like she’s going to protest but then she leaves. Celena chuckles weakly. “Ohh… she didn’t like that,” Celena muses. “No,” Thrawn says. He continues to stare at Celena, as if he’s trying to figure out who she is just from looking at her. “If you’re going to torture me I’ve had worse…” Celena winces as she raises her head to look up at him. She’s realizing now that unlike all the other Imperials he isn’t human, she makes a slightly confused sound. “Something amuses you?” “You’re …not human.”

“How observant of you.”

“And you’re with the Empire? …why?”

Thrawn raises a brow. It was curious to him that this woman would think to ask that when she was the one captive, she was the one being tortured. And yet she was curious about something that to him was trivial in this moment.

“What is your name?” Thrawn asks instead of replying.

It was a question that Pryce hadn’t bothered to ask her.

“Celena.” “Celena. No surname?”

“...no.”

“Are you a Rebel?” “Your friend seems to think so.”

“Governor Pryce has a tendency to be… overzealous in her methods,” Thrawn leans in closer to Celena, as if he’s studying. “Is that what you’d call it?” Celena scoffs slightly. She feels uneasy under the gaze of his glowing red eyes. She’s met Chiss before so it wasn’t his eyes that unnerved her it was something about the way he was looking at her. 

“Are you going to tell me your name?” she asks. 

Thrawn tilts his head. “Thrawn.”

“...your actual name.”

Thrawn pauses a moment. “Mitth’raw’nuruodo.”

“Mitth’raw’nuruodo,” she repeats. She doesn’t seem to struggle saying his name as most humans would. There is barely even a hint of an accent as she says it.

Thrawn is surprised but he doesn’t show it. He doubts this woman is with the Rebels. The Rebels wouldn’t have sent someone to do something so risky alone. Which made the question of who she really was all the more interesting. He moves to the side of the gurney Celena is strapped to and presses a button, the straps retract and the suddenness of it sends Celena falling to the floor. She hits the floor hard and groans softly. 

“Bring her to my office,” Thrawn finally looks away from her, focusing on the Stormtrooper standing by the door. “I will question her there.”

Thrawn leaves the room, leaving Celena on the floor. Every part of her body aches, now that she’s on the ground it even hurts to breathe. This hadn’t gone how she hoped it would. And inwardly she feels sick. She had been so sure her plan would work she hadn’t really thought of the alternative. Or maybe at this point, she didn’t care. Getting caught by the Imperials was no worse than what she had to go back to. The Stormtrooper yanks her roughly off the floor. “Get moving Rebel Scum!”

Thrawn watches Celena as she uses a damp cloth to wipe the blood off her face. When she got to his temporary office he had a cloth with a bowl of warm water waiting for her as well as food. There was something different about this woman, something he found intriguing. And since torture hadn’t made her talk, he would try something else - something less crass than the interrogation droid.

“Do you always stare,” Celena asks, lowering the cloth so she can fully look at Thrawn. “You aren’t a Rebel,” Thrawn says simply. “That much is obvious.” “To you,” Celena replies, her eyes going down to the food. “It’s not tampered with,” Thrawn tilts his head. “That would defeat the purpose of bringing you here.”

“Why am I here then?” Celena lowers the cloth. There is still blood on her face. It’s dried and it’s itchy on her skin but that feels like the least of her concerns right now. What she needed was a way out here. 

Thrawn doesn’t say anything right away. “I must say I’m impressed you withstood Pryce’s torture. Most would break under such duress.” 

Now Celena is the one who is quiet she looks at the plate of food - basic bread, likely from those portion packets she had gotten so accustomed to eating. 

“I take it you have met my kind before,” Thrawn says.

“Once,” Celena replies. She doesn’t want to elaborate on that. Instead, her attention goes to the few art pieces in the room. 

Even if this was just a temporary office for Thrawn before he went back to his ship he liked to be surrounded by art. He had made sure to bring a few pieces with him, after all if he was going to be here for any length of time he needed something. He had brought one of Sabine Wren’s paintings with him, it made sense considering the Ghost crew’s ties to Lothal. And it would give him more time to study it, to understand it – to understand the Rebels. 

Celena begins to wipe at the blood and grime on her face again, moving the damp cloth down to her neck. Thrawn watches her, he studies her. With some of the blood removed there really is no denying she is beautiful, it wasn’t attraction just a simple fact. He squints slightly as she wipes away the dried blood from her neck, there is a mark there…

“I know you are not a Rebel, Celena,” Thrawn stands up and moves to stand behind her chair. He leans down, putting a hand on Celena’s head to move her so he can get a better look at it. “What are you–” Celena tries to pull away from him. “This mark,” Thrawn stares at it. It isn’t just a mark, it’s a brand. “You belong to the Hutt Cartel.”

Celena pulls away from him, dropping the cloth and standing up. From the way she pulls away it’s clear she doesn’t like being touched. She crosses her arms over her chest as she glares at Thrawn. “And if I do?” 

Thrawn straightens and puts his hands behind his back as he looks at her. “The Hutts would not be foolish enough to send you to steal from us and considering how you still have that brand,” he pauses for a moment. “Did you think you could give them the weapons cache in exchange for your freedom?”

Celena moves her arms tighter around herself. “Does it matter?”

“I suppose it does not,” Thrawn takes a step closer to her. “At least not to most of the Imperials here.” “You’re Imperial.”

“Yes, I am.”

For a few moments, they stood there, staring at each other. Something about the way Thrawn looks at her makes Celena’s skin crawl and soon she has to look away. Instead of looking at him she turns her attention to the painting in the corner of the room. 

“You like art?” Thrawn asks.

Celena says nothing, she takes a few steps closer to it as she takes it in. The shapes, the colours, they all seem to have meaning and for a brief moment she feels a pang of jealousy. This artist had a story. A purpose. Thrawn watches her, her reaction to the piece makes him more curious about her. 

It was hard not to be curious. Besides… she could become useful later. Connections to the Hutt Cartel, connections to the Outer Rim.

“This was painted by a Mandalorian,” Thrawn moves so he’s standing next to her. 

“This is a story,” Celena says, still looking at the painting. “I doubt you’re supposed to have this.”

“I like to collect art from my adversaries,” Thrawn says. “It allows me to understand them better. Their motivations.” “I doubt the artist likes you have this then.”

Thrawn almost chuckles. “No, I doubt she does either.” 

Celena turns to look at him then, her brow furrowed. “So what are you going to do with me then?”

“I am going to give you a room, with a proper bed,” Thrawn replies. “You will stay here until I decide what to do with you.” Celena’s mouth opens to say something. “Do not mistake this for kindness Celena. I am merely deciding how useful you could be to me. Until then you will be locked in a room. I suggest you don’t try to escape.”

Celena stares at him, there is something almost menacing about the way Thrawn says that. She knows if she tries to escape he won’t stop whatever will happen to her. It also seems clear that he knows she has nothing to escape too. Go back to the Hutts or stay here and just wait and hope that she may have a better outcome.

She didn’t have a choice. So she forces a smile. 

“With Imperial hospitality, how could I refuse?”

Ohhhhh man I also read (was assigned) Into the Wild in high school and got Intense about it and never watched the movie because of my Feelings about Dramatizing A Real Person's Tragedy. The going to Alaska on a whim was definitely not a good or informed choice but I was so obsessed with the idea that one could just. Leave. Also I remember fixating on the fact that he changed his name and having a lot of feelings about the way everyone calls him Chris McCandless even though he was going by Alex at the end of his life. In retrospect, very Egg of me but I still think it's interesting.

can i say something i think that also maybe bothered me about his whole leaving thing. i’m like fully understanding the Urge to Leave. i feel that urge often. sometimes i even take it! but idk. something about him waiting to finish college always. annoyed me slightly? and it was. why did he not just. leave before going to college. like i get the urge to tell your parents to fuck off as well (and also i have heard that there was domestic violence involved, which to be clear i want to read his sister’s book after this but i’m not super up to date on that aspect of the story, but i’m not just saying uwu about this and brushing over it), i just feel like he seemed to be really against handouts and money but that was the only reason he survived as long as he did. the friendliness and kindness of people got him fully to alaska (and as soon as he was cut off completely from his community, that’s when tragedy struck). which is fine of course! but a lot of people seem to ascribe communist belief systems to him but the further i get into the book the more his tale seems like a proto-libertarian going out to live in isolation while still benefitting from his fellow man but not wanting to admit that was what he was doing. you know what i mean. and that’s not even getting into the fact that he clearly cared deeply about international humanitarian issues as evidenced by the fact that he donated his (extra) college fund, but i don’t understand how that never translated to him doing ANYTHING mutual aid related rather than trying his hardest to become a one man island. i mean, it’s fine if you want to live your own life, i think he’s just always kind of struck me as a bit of a hypocrite because of this even aside from the was-he-right-to-do-it debate, his personal aspirations and beliefs seemed misaligned from how he was actually living his life yanno.

also it is absolutely wild that they just never refer to him as alex in the narrative now that you mention it. tell me your book was written in the 90s without telling me your book was written in the 90s (because everyone just fucking automatically accepts given names now???? bc why wouldn’t you????)

Idek who in my audience would still be on the h*p bandwagon but tbh I say this as a pitch both for ppl who still have nostalgia for the property and ppl who enjoy being haters (I mean, if you can withstand the salt without also getting just so so so burned out hearing about JKR’s bigotry, I know it hits me sometimes too), the Shrieking Shack Podcast is excellent in terms of critical analysis of the wizard books while also just being extremely funny. I swear the hosts xeecee and Liz have a wire tap into my brain, in terms of sense of humor and just voicing the problems I have with this stupid franchise.

I understand the stance of people who are avoidant of the franchise completely, but I do think having a better understanding of how and why the books ultimately failed and veered off in quality definitely helped me demystify the franchise as this like, untouchable thing of quality I was too attached to to ever give up but instead as a flawed work that I had grown out of and was far more at peace with letting go. I also think it helps me articulate to other people why the artist is not separate from the art. Her worldview is imbedded into her books, and especially later on, that’s why they were so mean-spirited and awful. No matter how much I liked the series as a kid, I think the distaste for the pernicious aspects of the franchise has been an… effective deterrent for me going back. And while I don’t have the energy to get into terminally online arguments, I think critical analysis is useful as a skill to give people who also have a skewed and nostalgia colored view of the franchise.

I will addendum that their perspective on the first few books is a lot more charitable and while I do agree w their thoughts, hearing nice things abt the franchise might feel distasteful in this climate, (I know it is for me) so if that’s the case and you have no problem starting in the middle I recommend starting around book 4! That’s when you start to get much more of a mixed bag.

And if you wanna hear basically nothing but wall to wall dunking, start with Deathly Hallows. Jumping in cold to a seventh season is rough but I promise it’s so worth it. I re-listen to the podcast All The Time when I’m between interests, and I tend to skip the early seasons and just go straight for the bad stuff. I’ve probably gone back to the DH season so many times. It’s brutal yet somehow completely earned. I’ve never seen anyone so thoroughly articulate my long held feelings that DH is a failure of a capstone on that franchise on all levels structural, thematic, and moral. This is not me pretending I had clairvoyance into the future bc there was plenty of shit that snuck past me as a kid (hello, book 4 was my favorite for forever) but when I read that book in like 5th grade I could just feel something was deeply wrong.

Also they just wrapped up the season where they were reading midnight sun and twilight at the same time and it’s been great. It’s way more lighthearted which has been a nice palate cleanser & I do think they’re a bit charitable toward twilight but the thing I appreciate is that their critique is more substantive than just the common reactionary low hanging fruit talking points & they have actually brought up the neglected topic of racism within the books

Also if you’re just starting and the news topics + freebies / goofs segment they do at the beginning and ends of the episodes throws you off , I get it. I love shriekcast & I do find the segments funny but they’re not everyone’s thing, and I do scrub through that stuff sometimes bc it can be long winded. For reference It usually lasts abt 30-40 min sometimes shorter and occasionally way longer.

Hunter manages to shove all the junk into one corner and make the start of a fairly presentable bed in the other corner by the time the human re-arrives in the Boiling Isles and throws open his door hard enough to smack it against the wall.

“You took my advice!” shouts the human, at the top of her lungs.

“Hiiiiii,” says Hunter, hands over his ears. The human takes a deep breath. Hunter closes the door in her face. “Byeeee.”

There's a lot of lines I've written over the years that make me laugh, but Hunter and Luz as a funny sibling duo…. Every time I reread this fic I giggle at this scene. 

😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?

OH ABSOLUTELY there's a few lil ones… I think the one I do most often is namedrop other fandoms/charcters? This happens a lot in my KH fics. Like I'll have a TWEWY reference or character show up for like one second and then never again. Just for funsies and also flavor and also bc I love twewy. 

Sometimes I will also set up scenes specifically to make readers think the worse happened/some guy died or whatever and then it gets revealed its something funny instead. I do that a lot too djhsfgkj

🎢Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

LABYRINTHS OF THE HEART. I love all I've written but nothing will ever come close to Labyrinths. It was freshmen year of college and stuff was happening irl and that fic just. Went places. I had so much fun with it.

Oooo I gotta think about this one... hmmm, I think, I've always been a daydreamer and as a kid I used to be annoyed I couldn't "reread" my daydreams like I could my favorite books?? so I decided I just had to write them down eventually I think jhdfkgj

Of course in my mind before i could write down my ideas I had to actually get GOOD at writing (kid brain. My logic is silly, write whatever and whenever u want, u do not need "skill" to get started but ANYWAY) that's also how I started writing fic, for writing practice!! And now years later I'm still at it haha

Oooooh, a lot of readers in Labyrinths guessed the final plot point, which is that Varian will become the moondrop… most of my fics don't tend to have major twists though, I think…? There's one other fic I've written that has a HUGEE twist, but it hasn't been revealed yet and no one's guessed it yet, so ;)

i have a player and xehanort on the island fic in the works (exploring his possible childhood, character study and legacies kinda thing), and its still veeeeeery rough draft (like. basically still just notes) but I do have this exchange!!!

✅ What's something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don't mean to?

The above exhange: "i love you / that isn't what I asked / but it is my answer" has actually shown up in a few fics! It's a common theme I guess u could say... its a conversation that means something to me and I think it is changed slightly by the context of every story, so I keep bringing it in jhdfgkj

Other things that crop up a lot....Found family for sure! Uhhh the phrase "rolling the thought like candy on [their] tongue" shows up a lot without my meaning it too djhfgjkh

Oh!!! Honey!! Honey shows up a lot. I think honey is fantastic. Did u know it lasts forever? Also it has great medical properties--Anyway I think you get the idea haha

thank you darling 🥰 i’m so happy this is your favorite part because it’s definitely my favorite since part two (part two didn’t perform well in terms of notes but that was suuuuch a fun part to write) he is such a softie he just hides it well, like he’s been whipped for a while now let’s be real. and yeah i really like having lead girlies that actually try to stand up for themselves and set boundaries. obviously their relationship isn’t anything close to healthy, and i never set out to make it anything but the chaotic, toxic mess it is anyway. she’s also a sweetheart and went through so much with her mother and peter already that i think she has a lot more patience than most and a better ability at understanding them. most of which i feel can be contributed to her experiences with peter when he was struggling with his addiction. it’s no easy thing to be someone’s support during that process, whether they’re getting sober, relapsing, or in the height of their addiction, and it requires a lot of maturity and patience, so i feel like she has been prepared for harry’s issues so to speak.

the book :( yeah. oh and i SO forgive him every time too. i’m not under the illusion that he doesn’t behave in very unproductive and unhealthy ways in his interpersonal relationships, but i also know, because i created him lol, everything that made him this way and his true thoughts/feelings on things behind the hard shell, so i have a very big soft spot for him and forgive him every time as well.

also, the motorcycles weren’t planned. i mean, i knew i vaguely wanted to do a scene of them riding motorcycles but i wasn’t chomping at the bit to write it. the parts i’ve been dying to write are the more domestic scenes of them, harry starting to open up, and introducing the parallels between this story, as well as harry’s character, and papillon. i read a quote from his tattoo artist about papillon inspiring his butterfly tatt and have had that planned as a motif of the story for a bit.
