——————
Ford shook his head at Stanley who was seated in front of a new computer now placed in the living room, “I’m still confused on why we should be posting the ad listing “online” rather than the local paper, or putting up flyers around town.” Ford used air quotes for emphasis, he still found the whole idea strange, he liked the computer for being a tool he could use to further research. He didn't like it so much as a vessel for finding candidates for a job he was offering, the thought that he had no idea who was communicating with him unsettled him a bit. Especially knowing the kind of work he was going to be having this future assistant… well assist with.
“Because yer never going to find someone with the qualifications yer asking for in this town” Stan looked over his shoulder at a crossed arm Ford. “Hiring someone for a summer job who has a PhD in Application Math, whatever that means-“
“Applied Mathematics, Stanley” Ford interrupted.
“Whatever it is you're not going to find that here, you and fiddleford are probably the only people in this town to actually have a college degree” he said with a chuckle, turning back to the computer. He was clicking around on some website that Ford had never heard of, let alone just recently finding out what the internet was. “I'm setting up a job listing on some of the local college websites, ya know for people that are studying or just done studying”. The clicking of the mouse and the typing of keys continued as Ford ran the motion through his head, overthinking perhaps every outcome of Stanley posting that job listing. Ultimately though Ford knew he was right in that, no one with at least a degree in Applied Mathematics was going to be residing nearby.
“Just please be careful about the information you include in this job posting, try to keep it minimal as possible. If they ask more questions about specifics you can let them know that I can explain in person.”
Stan looked over his shoulder, his eyebrows slightly downturned with a smirk rising on his face, “I didn’t realize you had hired me to be your assistant, you're going to have to cough up if you want me to do this for you”. Ford groaned in annoyance of his brother, “Stanley you know I don’t know how to use any of that”.
“Exactly why you're going to want to have me help you out with this”, Stanley moved his arm to drape across the back of the chair he was in, looking more directly at him. “That’ll be twenty dollars”, he held out his hand expectantly at his twin. A beat of silence passed between the two as they had a small staring contest, both men’s brows furrowed at the other.
Ford finally reached for his back pocket after he felt he had glared at his brother enough, he slipped a twenty dollar bill from the leather wallet and practically slammed it in his hand before walking in the opposite direction without a word. While Stan on the other hand, was more than beaming when he saw Ford’s hand fall to his back pocket, Stan half shouted as Ford strode out of the room.
“You’ll thank me later when I find the perfect candidate!” He laughed as he said it and returned to more clicking and typing around the website.
Ford returned to the lab to finish up some things before the kids were scheduled to get there later in the month. When they returned from the long months at the ocean, Ford wanted nothing more than to work on something in his lab again. He loved feeling the anticipation of a project becoming something, but of course he knew he could easily get carried away. After Dipper and Mabel left last summer, before Stanley and him were going to head out, he had made a major discovery while working in the lab. He had discovered an atom that was capable of recreating a direct clone of itself and in as many atoms he could count. He continued to work on the project until Stanley was practically dragging him from the house to leave to sail around the world.
While sailing towards one of their final destinations at the end of the trip, Ford finally opened up to Stanley about his worries of falling into the same pits as before. He was worried that he would become too involved, as he already felt himself doing as they were leaving for their trip. He also desperately needed some alone time from Stanley, but he didn’t mention that to him while they were on the boat.
“What if you hired someone to help you with the project?” Stan had offered a possible solution, while he had sat in the boat looking at Ford who was deep in thought over his dilemma. “I mean obviously the last time that happened, it wasn’t great either…” He trailed off after the look on Ford’s face became apparent, regretting the thought of his old college friend.
“I know the last time wasn’t great” Stanley pushed forward, “but maybe if you have someone hired to help with the smaller stuff. Things like using the calculator or something, whatever the small stuff even is to you” he said the last part under a fake cough which earned him a glare from his brother. However, the idea wasn't… terrible, Ford thought. He pondered over the possibilities of having someone helping him out, along with having the two kids upstairs to bother him. If he were to have someone who he didn't have to know that well take on most of the minor details, the equations and such, he would be able to prioritize the best parts of the project while also having time for his family. At least, that’s what he had hoped for when Stanley initially offered the idea.
“That could be a good idea…” Ford said after taking several moments to ponder the possibilities. “I would need someone who could do advanced mathematical equations, with room for equations that could possibly extend what they know…”. Stanley just looked at him deep in thought, wondering how there could be that many things to think about, the answer seemed clear to him.
Back in the lab, Ford could hear Stanley groaning loudly about some ‘unknown error message’. He continued to monitor and take note of the atoms under his advanced microscope for a while, waiting until Stanley had further news of any postings. He wondered what his new assistant would be like, if they could have the same passion for knowledge and understanding as he does.
———
A few days had passed, Ford falling into old habits quickly, holing himself up in the lab for hours upon hours. The only time he was seen over the last 48 hours was to grab more coffee from the kitchen, he caught naps in between work, falling asleep over his piles of scrap paper filled with numbers and letters. Ford had not anticipated how much mathematical reasoning was going to follow the atom cloning discovery, he was falling behind on moving forward with more discoveries on the atoms, but over hundreds of miniscule details that needed solving kept him at the desk. Stan walked down on the 49th hour of Ford’s lock down in the basement, opening the door noisily and making as much noise as possible on the way down to let him know he was on the way. Ford was scribbling away on the nth page of scrap work, crossing out failed attempts of solving equations as Stan broached the lab floor.
Stan awkwardly cleared his throat at Ford when he didn’t turn around, even though Stanley was sure to have made enough noise on the way down. Ford turned his head over his shoulder, his body seeming to not want to move from the space it had cramped into. He raised his eyebrows in a questioning manner, as if asking ‘What? Im busy’. Stan gave a huff of annoyance before starting,
“I have about 3 applications that I thought were worth looking over, most of the idiots who applied didn’t even have math degrees. All they see in the listing is free housing and they flock like birds trying to claw their way in” he said with a slight chuckle. He strided over to Ford’s desk, as Ford leaned back finally interested in what Stan was saying. He took the papers from Stanley and began to look over them. He began thumbing through the few resumes, looking over each one carefully noting that all three people had at least some qualifications in mathematics. He looked up to Stan and gave him a tight smile.
“I appreciate you getting these for me, I’ll reach out to the ones I feel are qualified.” A beat passed between them, Ford paused for a second wondering if he should just return to work at this point or if Stanley had something else since he hasn't made any move to leave.
“I think the one on the bottom will be the best fit.” Stan said with a certain look in his face that Ford couldn’t place, as he turned to leave. Ford looked at him as he walked towards the stairs with a questioning look on his face, wondering what could have led his brother to place a preference on one of these resumes even though he didn't know what applied mathematics was. As Stan trudged up the stairs Ford called to his brother,
“I'll be sure to look at that one, thank you Stanley.” Which made Stanley pause and turn to look at Ford, a distant smile on his face as he nodded and continued up the stairs. Ford turned back to his desk and pulled the resume on the bottom up to the top, the header in nice bold letters a fine print used, he noted.
Y/N YL/N
He also took note that this was the only two-page resume offered to him, with the education list taking up most of the room. Several universities/schools were listed and his eyes read over the names and degrees that followed. He read all the way to the bottom where it listed your highschool with graduation dated in 1999. He noted this person was in their early 30’s with several bachelors degrees in several sciences, two master’s degrees in statistics and biology, and of course a Ph.D in applied mathematics. The latest graduation listed was University of Oregon masters program in statistics for April, which he noted it was now early May noting it would be fresh on the mind. He moved your resume to the back of the small stack, looking over the first two he skipped over, and honestly he wished he saved yours for last. The first two were jokes compared to the advanced knowledge you listed, he set the first aside after noting that the education list was no longer than a paragraph, and the second resume didn’t take long to set aside either as his eyes raked in the many spelling errors.
He read over your resume again looking for a way to contact you to set up the interview. He noted the phone number and email in the corner of the first page, and made to move upstairs to the kitchen phone. As he stood up however, his muscles almost molded into place from sitting at the desk, stopped him from moving further. He groaned as he began to stretch himself out, thinking about how he couldnt wait to stop looking at math problems for hours on end.
Heading back upstairs he reached the phone and quickly gazed at the microwave clock, 3:49 pm. He was glad it wasn’t later than five, as he picked up the corded receiver and began to punch in the numbers. The phone rang a few times before your voice fluttered over the phone, “Hello?”. Ford cleared his throat awkwardly, “Hello! Yes, is this Y/N YL/N? Oh it is, great, this is Stanford Pines calling about a job posting for the assistant position. I was hoping to set up an interview to discuss further details of the position.”
“I was just wondering if I would hear back from this offer,” the light voice on the other end laughed a pleasant laugh a little before continuing, “I’d love to join you for an interview regarding the position, I’m free anytime, anywhere this coming week and the next.”.
Ford offered a time for tomorrow at the local diner, which he provided the address to. The voice on the phone wished Ford a great rest of his night and that they would see him tomorrow. Ford wished them the normal pleasantries he hated to conduct while making mundane phone calls such as these. He was slightly relieved to find you weren’t completely strange, at least right off the bat. When he hung the phone back on the hanger, Stan suddenly spoke, causing Ford to jump from the lack of warning.
“So did you end up going with the one I said?” Stan looked smug as Ford met his gaze, knowing damn well he scared Ford on purpose. Ford rolled his eyes after he settled after the slight scare,
“Unsurprisingly, as you could probably assume. You shouldn’t have even bothered with the other two. One only had a few community college classes under their belt.” Ford turned to make more coffee, he figured he would stretch his legs now as he was planning on working on some more equations before the meeting tomorrow. Stan gave a hearty laugh, “She’s also quite the looker, surprised me when I was pulling resumes”. Ford gave his brother a look as he asked, “Can’t you make your picture anything you want online?”. He remembers when they got the computer last time the kids were here, Dipper had shown him how he had his profile for online DD&MD. He absolutely didn’t understand it, but Dipper assured him this summer he would teach him. Which would benefit him from not having to pay Stanley anytime he needed something done the modern way (this was not often).
“Yeah but this was on a college website, everyone has their picture I think. It looks all like student ID’s… Oh don’t look at me like that! I looked at all of their profile pictures. She just happened to have the best looking picture.” Stan finished with a shrug and a laugh. Ford had looked at him like he was crazy for looking through all the people who applied profile pictures before feeling the need to ask, “You did give me recommendations on experience, not looks correct?”.
Stan shook his head, “I know you would kill me if I passed on a math nerd over an actual good looking girl” he laughed, turning “I'm going to head out gotta meet some people, don’t wait up for me.” Stan said as he was walking out the door, grabbing the keys as he slammed the door. Ford shook his head and decided to take his brother's word for it, his mind replaying what his twin mentioned, “quite the looker” as if that could have any effect on anything. Ford thought he didn't care much at all for how a person appeared as long as they could solve these problems that's all that mattered, and maybe that they were decently pleasant to work with. He couldnt help but reflect back to the phone call, your light and airy voice filling his ear with pleasant sound, at least you didnt have a horrible voice and he could probably get used to hearing that voice more often, he thought. Ford filled his cup with coffee and headed back downstairs not giving the interview tomorrow much more thought than your voice on the phone.

Hello there! This is my first time I am requesting something, but I came up with a Matt Rempe request: You met him some time ago. Your friends and family know you are talking and being friends with a guy, they just don’t know who. Reader is pretty strong with what their goals are and one of those is finish college and go to graduate school in another country. Reader is quite busy all the time and is determinate to achieve their dreams. Therefore they think is not appropriate to have a relationship when they know they won’t be able to commit to one in the meantime. Matt knows this and he tells reader that he will wait, even thought he just confessed. He supports the reader to achieve their goal, reader manages to do it, after some time, Matt kept his word and is still in love with them and they go full on that relationship. You can add the paparazzi craziness after they announce it and the whole thing. Also, Matt is beaming with happiness and can’t stop talking about their future together.
Tumblr media
It’s been a wild few years since you first met Matt Rempe.
Back then, your priorities were set like stone: finish college, get into graduate school abroad, and build the career you’d dreamed of for years. Relationships? Not on your list. Even when Matt entered your life with his infectious laugh and endless support, you made it clear: your goals came first, and you weren’t ready to commit. But he’d just grinned at you, his voice warm as he’d said, “I’ll wait for you.”
You’d been skeptical. He had a rising career in hockey, a world brimming with fast-paced action and high stakes. The thought of him waiting was… well, it felt too good to be true. But he did. He checked in on your late nights, even timed calls around your study schedule, often staying up just to hear about your classes and projects, and cheering you on whenever you felt doubts creeping in.
Through grueling exams, applications, and countless sleepless nights, Matt was there, encouraging you. And somehow, that distance between you became the quiet rhythm of your friendship, blooming into a love you didn’t even realize was growing.
When you finally got accepted into grad school overseas, he’d been there on the other end of the phone, practically shouting with joy. He’d told you, “You’re doing it—you’re really doing it!” as if your dreams were as important to him as his own.
Time passed, and every time you returned home, you noticed the way his gaze softened, like he was saving that look just for you. Despite his own growing fame, he never once let his own world overshadow yours. Matt kept his promise.
Finally, after years of late-night talks, shared milestones, and enduring distance, you both knew it was time. No more holding back, no more what-ifs. The announcement took the internet by storm, and the frenzy that followed was unreal. Paparazzi swarmed, trying to get every bit of the story, and suddenly, you were both the latest headline in sports and entertainment news.
But through it all, Matt was just beaming. He couldn’t stop talking about your future together, openly sharing his excitement with anyone who asked. He’d been so patient, and now that he finally had you, he couldn’t hold back. And in his interviews and stories, there was always this glow—like he’d won the biggest game of his life.
“I always knew I’d wait for you,” he told you one evening, his hand resting over yours. "And every minute was worth it.”
Your journey together had only just begun, but this time, it was a love you could fully commit to. And as he wrapped his arms around you, whispering promises about the life you’d build together, you knew that no goal had ever felt as fulfilling as being with him.

008. Kindness
♡ Pairing - Vash x Reader
♡ Word count - 1.1k
♡ Warnings - none
♡ Description - You continue to send Vash letters.
Part of the 150 Bullets drabble series on AO3
Part 1 ---- Part 2 ---- Part 3 (you are here!) ---- Part 4 ---- Part 5
Tumblr media
The next letter comes a week later on a Tuesday. The one after that, two weeks and two days. And the one after that, just four days later.
You’ve made a habit of writing at nearly every post office and leaving it to be picked up by Vash if he chooses. He tries to resist and leave the letters there, but loneliness and the want to know how you’re doing always wins. He’s returned to a town more than once just to get a letter.
This week’s letter comes from a little town called Bangs. The mailwoman hands him the letter from the top of her tomas, and he gives her the twenty-six C-cents for handling it.
The paper inside is pink this time and smells a bit like almond lotion. Your curving and slanted writing greets him:
                Birdie,
I’ve managed to add three new towns this week to the roster. There’re only a few people in each who are willing to join in on the book exchange, but a win’s a win. HQ says I’m doing great, and they’ve already gotten a few applications from some teenagers in the towns to apply for college in the bigger cities.
In fact, they’re moving me to a new route soon. One that’s a bit more challenging due to it being so far out and away from most other places. I’m getting my own tomas for it since the towns are so spread out. I’ve drawn the map they sent me on the back…in case you ever want to visit.
I hope you’re doing well. I wish I could see you. I know you’re getting my letters. Write to me, please. Even if you don’t think we should travel together anymore, we can at least be friends, right?
Forever yours,
       ______
P.S. What do evil toma lay? Deviled eggs.
He’s surprised to find two blank pages nestled into the envelope. You really want him to write you? After abandoning and dodging you for nearly two months? But he shouldn’t be surprised. You’re always adjusting to his boundaries, always making sure he’s comfortable, even if you disagree. You’re too kind for your own good. The least he could do is tell you he’s okay.
So, he writes back.
                ______,
I’m doing fine. I’ve got a few jobs lined up in the town I’m in right now. I was able to help nurse someone’s grandma back to health here too. I’m doing my best, just like you are.
He taps at the paper. What else should he say?
I’m sorry I I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. You’re making a huge difference by helping build up people’s education. It will help so many people in the future.
What do you know about the region you’re getting assigned to? I’ve only been around there a few times, and I’m sure it’s changed since then.
Best,
              Vash
P.S. Why can’t you ever trust stairs? They’re always up to something.
He’s left with an extra page to write with, but just stuffs it in his pocket. He doesn’t have much of worth to say right now; he still feels bad about…everything. He finds the postwoman again, who takes the new envelope and trots off on her tomas, and that’s that.
The next letter comes on the road as a courier passes by on her own walk back toward a town called Ferret’s Claw. She hails him, and hands it to him. “Already paid for,” her gravelly voice says, then continues trotting down the path of dunes.
Vash watches her leave before he opens and scans it over.
                Birdie,
I’ve heard about you helping the Plants in the region. You’re not as sneaky as you used to be. That, or people are a lot more talkative about the talented, young, handsome man going around fixing Plants.
                Sure sounds like you.
I’ve had to deal with some bandits on the road. Been chased a few times. Luckily they either aren’t great shots or don’t have their own toma to chase me on. They seem to be young kids with nothing better to do. I hope the more we spread education, that will lessen.
                Be careful around here, birdie.
                                                                                                Forever yours,
                                                                                                                ______
A blush rises to his cheeks when he reads over the “talented, young, handsome” line again. Leave it to you to still get his stomach fluttering with butterflies, even at a distance. Vash lets a breath go through his nose, then folds the letter, putting it in his “letters pocket,” so dubbed now after receiving them. He brings out the spare piece of paper from the previous letter and begins to write, using his knee as a ‘desk.’
                Mayfl______,
Don’t worry about me; I know how to run handle bandits. You should be more careful, though. Do you still have that knife you got from the pawn shop?
I won’t be staying in the region long. There’s a call coming from somewhere else, and I need to go to it.
He taps the paper, looking up and around as he thinks. Should he tell you where he’ll be? He’d like more letters…
It’s coming from a town in the east, I know that much. Hopefully I can get there in time.
                Be safe.
                             Vash
P.S. There are three types of people in the world: those who can count, and those who can’t.
There. That ought to be enough.
And when he’s in the east, he isn’t as surprised to find a letter waiting for him at one of the towns.
Birdie,
I’ll keep writing to you if that’s alright. It gets lonely on the road, and I don’t doubt you feel it too. I love getting your letters.
HQ says I’ll stay in this region for at least a few months. Please let me know where to send my letters; I promise I won’t follow – I’ve got too many people relying on me and the books now. But I’d still love to hear from you. Tell me about what you’re up to, any adventures, even the shoot-outs you’re in. I’ll worry, but I’ll know you’re okay with each letter.
I hope you’re well. I hope you find happiness wherever you go.
                                                                                Forever yours,
______
P.S. What do you call a can opener that doesn’t work? A can’t opener.
And Vash does write back. Even if it’s so much less than what you write, he keeps you updated.
Vash wonders, when he’s writing his next letter, if this should stop. He’s leading you on; he hasn’t stopped contact like he promised he would. He looks down at the paper and crumples it in his hand, then opens and smooths it out again. Your kindness is like a drug he can’t quit. It’s selfish, but he wants to keep you, like the letters he keeps in his pocket. Is it so bad to want one friend in the world?
Maybe. Perhaps not.
And so he writes.

Clickety clack! Clickety clack! Clickety clack! Clickety clack!
The sounds of your keyboard were the only thing heard in your freezing room, not like you could tell with your blasting headphones.
You shivered for the hundredth time. Your legs become sore from remaining crossed, your neck ached at your hunched over posture. In turn, you sat up. You let out a strained moan as you stretched your limbs. Your laptop was set to the side as you stood to stretch even more. The headphones were moved to be around your neck, rubbing your ears as some kind of relief.
As much as you’re determined to get your work turned in on time, your mind was distracted. The nervous pit in your stomach grew by the hour, part of it was relieved and the other, saddened. You have a scheduled meeting with your counselor in a half hour.
It’s just a half hour, no need to get all worked up. But you grew impatient, you felt like time was moving purposely slow just to screw with your emotions.
Like before, you were distracted. You couldn’t get your piece turned in on time if your own head hates you.
You changed into appropriate clothing or the weather. It was chilly out but not too cold. Just some simple sweats, sneakers and a hoodie. You brought your necessary items with you in a small bag and headed out, making sure you locked your door. Then, out You went to the campus.
You put your headphones back where they belong, and played your music. You took your usual path to the counselors office, walking random floors until you arrived on time. You arrived at their office and knocked on the door.
“You can come in, (Y/n).” You open and quietly shut the door, seeing your counselor sitting at their desk. They typed a few more words before turning their attention to you, “I noticed on your application that you’re open to internships. Are you still interested in them?”
You slip your headphones off and take a seat, “Still not sure if I am.” You admit, “I don’t think I can do work without getting paid.”
“Well, you’re just in luck.” The counselor types a few more things into their computer and turns the monitor to your direction, “Alchemax is a multinational chemical corporation. The CEO is willing to hire an intern.”
You lift an eyebrow, “A Chemical corporation? But I’m a writer.”
“I know you are but the CEO has high connections all over the place. Every student who has worked with the CEO or even worked a simple job in Alchemax now is making lots of money doing what they love. Their majors were completely different.”
You look back at the monitor, then to your counselor, “...I’m not sure if I want to do an internship with Alchemax.”
Your counselor sighs, “You do understand that Mr. O’Hara is one of the major donors. He’s the only reason that the community college is still up and running. It would be a tragedy if he stops donating money.”
Money. Of fucking course. It’s always about the money.
Your head hangs low, “This may be the chance to push your writing career forward. In the future, when you look back, you’ll be filled with guilt knowing that you had a chance. So, what will it be?”
“...I’ll do the internship.”
“That’s the spirit! Write up an email, have me as your referral, and then send it to Mr. O’Hara. I’ll write down his email.” They began writing down on a post it note, “You’re making the right choice and it’s like I told you in the beginning of your first year, I know you will become a great writer.”
You paced around your room. This feeling wasn’t nervousness, it was pure panic. Why did you let your counselor convince you that Alchemax was good enough? No, it wasn’t! You knew nothing about chemicals!
And the research wasn’t enough. There was no way a learning writer could ever work with a company with the complete opposite!
You paced around your room. This feeling wasn’t nervousness, it was pure panic. Why did you let your counselor convince you that Alchemax was good enough? No, it wasn’t! You knew nothing about chemicals!
Your email was finished, ready to be sent off. But you couldn’t. How could you not? This was your dream, to become a writer. Yet you didn’t want to become one where all eyes were on you, you wanted to be a simple writer, nothing all.
“It would be a tragedy if he stops donating money.”
You hated it. The feeling where everything was put on your shoulders and it counted on you. You couldn’t afford it if Mr. O’Hara does stop donating. You fucking hated it. You clicked send and began beating yourself up on how weak you are.
Alchemax Building // 12:50 PM
It’s almost been an hour. Where is this O’Hara guy?!
Your leg bounces up and down, as you continue to look back at your phone only for time to slowly move by. You sat here for over an hour after the receptionist told you it would only be a few minutes. A FEW MINUTES.
Why did you say yes to this again?
When you thought about leaving, the evaluator pinged and the doors opened. It revealed a disheveled and annoyed man who kept his eyes focused on the doors.
You take a deep breath as you stand, “Um, excuse me?” But he walks right by you, “Excuse me!” You say, louder this time.
The man responds with a heavy sigh, “Yes?”
“I’m (Y/n) (L/n), I’m a student at the (only) community college and I sent an email about an open internship.”
“Lyla.” He said and a woman appeared next to his head, “Were there any emails about the internships?”
“Well yeah, I read them all to you.”
“A heads up could’ve been nice.”
“Yeah yeah, I gotta check in on the R&D before they blow out another window.” She disappears.
“Right. This way.” He leads you to his office, opening the door and letting himself in first. You enter behind him, the door closing.
“As you know, I’m Miguel O’Hara, CEO of Alchemax.”
“I’m aware.”
Mr. O’Hara sits down with a heavy huff, “And then you must be aware that there is no need for an intern.”
You freeze in place, “I’m sorry?”
“If I remember correctly, you’re a writer applying to Alchemax.”
“I understand that but-”
“What purpose does a writer have in Alchemax? What purpose can you provide to the company?” He lifts an eyebrow, clearly trying to piss you off and sadly, it was working.
It was amusing to him. You could see the cocky smirk on his face as he waited for a response.
“The company was given to you. You then became the leader in rebuilding structures and in general, Earth. after numerous incidents (which is strange). But there have been gray areas in your company’s past which people like to bring up. You are thriving for change, and but at the same time, you hate change. I want to help you towards your goal and you don’t like people helping because you know you could do it yourself. The reason why the public kinda… hates you.” You now mumble, your head hanging low in embarrassment.
Shit! I said too much!
“What was your name again?”
“...(Y/n) (L/n).”
“I give you two weeks.” He sighs, “If you don’t screw anything up in those two weeks then you have a job here.”
“Thank you very much, Mr. O’Hara-”
“But if you do, then you go back to your community college and don’t even bother to try to come back. Do you understand?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Good.” Mr. O’Hara leans back and opens his laptop, “Lyla is down at the Research and Development Department, make sure the insights are correct. She’ll explain it to you.”
“Um, of course.”
“Tenth floor.” He said before you walk out the doors of his office.
Did you forget that your heart was racing the entire time? Or that you wanted to punch him in his face?
R&D Department // 5:22 PM
“Here at the Research Department, we keep the company competitive. We stay up to date on any new material and we’re always trying to improve. But we also keep an eye on the market, any incidents.”
“Incidents?”
“I thought you told it to Miguel. Alchemax rebuilds anything after an incident dealing with whether it be a building or someone doing something stupid, Alchemax is always to the rescue!”
“I need you to pass these to Dr. Octavius and put a rush on them. She’s been asking for them non-stop.” The man shoves the stack of papers into your hands and returns to his desk.
You held back the urge to sigh and curse at the man. But you have no standing here. You were a simple unpaid intern for two weeks. If you screwed up your chance, then you can kiss your dreams goodbye.
Did I tell you how much I hate it here?
“Of course I can.”
If I know where her office is.
After minutes of looking at name plates, you finally find her office. You transfer the papers to one arm and knock on the door.
“Those better be the reports I’ve asked for.” You hear.
“Yes, they are.” You respond.
“Then come on in!”
You carefully enter her office and see that it was more of a lab than office. A strong smell immediately hits your nose and you try to keep yourself composed to make it to where the lady seemed to be looking through a microscope.
“Don’t be shy.” She said, still not looking away, “Come on over.”
You reach her desk, setting the files down, “Is that all?”
Finally, she looks up, eyeing you up and down, “A new employee? Wow, it’s a surprise that Miguel finally got his head out of his butt.”
“I’m sorry-? No, no, I’m just an intern… For two weeks.” You correct her.
“Ah! The classic two week deal.”
“He’s done this before?”
Dr. Octavius nods with a smile, “He’s done it to most of the new employees here. Me especially. He never did like my drive and focus on science.” She uses her leg to pull up a rolling chair next to her.
You sit, mainly because you didn’t want to go back onto that floor, “I’m listening.”
“The press was all over one incident when I blew up a room after I came up with another idea. Who would’ve thought a collider would explode and so he put the two weeks rule, if any of us does something stupid, we’re done for. No excuses.”
“And there is no excuse for this.”
You jump out of your seat and turn around, Mr. O’Hara stood at the door, “You have around three more hours before you have a break. Care to explain?”
You open your mouth to speak but Olivia stands and places a hand on your shoulder, “I asked her for her opinion on some new tests and if she could hand these results to you.” Handing you a thin file.
You walk over to him and hand them to you, “Leave.” He tells you, “And go home.”
You hurry out the door and not look back.
“What are you trying to do Olivia?” He asks.
“I don’t know what you mean.” She pulls off her glasses and starts to clean them.
“This isn’t the first intern that you asked for an opinion. You do understand that they are interns, interns. They have no say, they have no experience in whatever they are doing.”
Olivia puts them on and lets out a playful sigh, “And you do know that I have to warn the interns that a simple mistake ruins your mood. Everything ruins your mood.”
“They can drag the company to the ground.”
“Is that what you’re angry about?”
“She’s my intern.”
“Then shouldn’t you be teaching her?”
Mr. O’Hara shakes his head and walks out, slamming the door on the way.
“Now that is a man with issues.”

Some middle of the night thoughts about the enrollment process at Night Raven College as I desperately try to draft up a story but there’s so much about this school that I just don’t understand!
(slight spoilers for Book 7):
In the beginning of the game, it’s heavily stated that not just anyone can get into NRC, the Black Carriage has to arrive for you, something Grim had been waiting for for a while
I had always assumed there would be some kind of application process and basically you don’t know that you’ve made it until it shows up, right?
we find out from Lilia that he had received his acceptance letter like 500 years ago out of the blue, no application needed. Thus debunking my previous theories
But that was 500 years ago, surely the process must have changed?
It could have, but it’s implied that Lilia only changed his mind once Malleus was accepted. He fished out his old letter from the archives and was able to enroll simply because he had it
Even Crowley said he’d never imagine someone would show up with a 500 year old acceptance letter
SO, based on purely the way Crowley is when it comes to school traditions, I don’t think much - if anything - has changed
So to sum up what we know (or what makes sense to me so far): Teenagers across Twisted Wonderland’s only hope of going to NRC isn’t some mysterious Black Carriage randomly appearing at your house to whisk you away like I dreaded- it’s a mysterious Black Envelope arriving at your house to congratulate you on getting in!
At least you get some kind of heads up which is nice, right? There must be some way of accepting your enrollment via the letter, then the Carriage loads you up in your coffin come the start of the school year to bring you to orientation
(Don’t even get me started on orientation, I’ve been trying to crack this code between the game and the manga and I just can’t make heads or tails out of how that process is so if anyone has any ideas I’d love to hear them, otherwise I’m just gonna make up my own thing for my fanfic)
Anyway, I know it’s a long shot but I hope we get more school lore in future chapters/books. Like how come Ramshackle is abandoned if it used to be a dormitory and why is it the only one not connected to the hall of mirrors? What was the associated color for the dorm? The characteristics of the students that were sorted there? Disney I beg of you, as someone who adores the Haunted Mansion- I need the lore!
Okay, end of my rant. If anyone had anything else to add, I’d greatly appreciate it!

I've been taking my Mid Year as an Engineer in Adamson University as a 1st Year to college. May I ask that if you have any advice about going through college?
First of all, congratulations.
Second, oh boy, college. The bane of my existence.
I speak as someone who had a better time as a graduate student than an undergraduate student. But I will give you tips that I used to get by in college, and should have really taken to heart when I had the chance.
First and most important, it is okay to change your major if you cannot handle the coursework or do just don't like the major. Obviously, it is good to pursue a major that has a guarantee chance of you getting a stable job in the future, but if you can't handle the coursework, then you are going get burnt out and your grades will drop. I chose a major that I ultimately despised and I could not handle the coursework and I broke down crying in the middle of many of my exams. Don't be like me, make sure you can enjoy and handle the coursework.
Two, build good connections with your professors and classmates. For a few reasons. One: your classmates and professors can help you understand the material if you cannot. Especially those really smart classmates who seem to just break the curve and ruin it for everyone else. Two: your professors can help you build connections with other professors, and their recommendations can help get you hired for an internship, job, or even a volunteering opportunity. Job and graduate school applications tend to ask for references and letters of recommendations. If you don't have any work experience just yet, those academic references can help you get a good job. Three: sometimes professors can be extremely lenient with their courses depending on the situation. If you build a connection with your professor and they know how hard you word, and you are on the boarder between a B and an A, they might just be kind enough to give you that A.
Three: If you do have to take a GRE course, try to take off a GRE course that knocks off multiple requirements. Same for the elective major courses. If you're able to complete them and get a good grade, then it will save you time and money and you'll be able to graduate faster.
Four: Have proper time management. Make sure to take proper breaks. Don't overwhelm yourself with work. If you're unable to properly finish the course, be sure to drop it before there are any charges to your account. Colleges do charge you if you drop a course right before finals. And if you do need to take a gap year, that's fine too. It's not defeat. It's just recovery.
Five: Don't feel bad if you do get a C. C's do get degree.
(If anyone else wants to add their two cents in, go for it. College can be difficult and advice from others who have gone to college would be beneficial.)

dumb
i finallyyyyyyyyyyyyyy went to the national aquarium yesterday omg and had a grand old tiiiiiime and took a ton of pics and videos and i thoroughly enjoyed myself and will elaborate on the enjoyment in the near future!
but first i need to whine about an annoyingly unhappy thing that was hanging in the back of my mind for a lot of the time.
i went with both of my parents, which was fine, bc thats who i wanted to go with.
but i really would have fucking preferred to do it sometime around the FIRST time i asked to go, which was when I was ohhhh, i dunno, A CHILD??? When I was 10, 11, 12, and still aspiring to have a career in zoology. And there was never ever ever a reason why we couldn't go, other than that my parents ~didn't feel like finding parking.~ i can't even tell you all the shit my family has never done together SOLELY because ~it's hard to find parking.~ everyfuckingbody else on earth can find parking! everyfuckingbody else on earth can deal with a lil inconvenience if it means getting to do something fun/memorable or giving someone they love something special. but not my lame ass family!
so, here i am now, a whole 29 years old, FINALLY having a nice day at the damn aquarium with my parents.
and i'm looking around at all these tiny children having the time of their lives with their parents and i couldn't help but feel jealous. :/ I wanted to be a 10 year old running around and demanding that my parents pick me up so I can get a better view of what's swimming near the top of a tall tank. I wanted to nyoom through the gift shop and try out all the different toys and flip through the children's books, blah blah.
anyway, we get to the part of the aquarium that has the touch pools where you get to just fuckin pet stingrays and shit! and i was so excited bc there are so many sea creatures ive always wanted to touch! i touched a horsehoe crab and a jellyfish! IVE ALWAYS WANTED TO PET A JELLYFISH!!! And I was thrilled about it!
but neither of my parents would pet anything!
which i mean, obviously that's their right, and they dont have to touch anything they dont wanna touch, but it just made me feel super isolated and outcast and reemphasized just how utterly alone i've always felt within my own family. literally NOBODY that im related to delights in any of the same things I delight in, and it fucking sucks.
which i mean, duh, that's what ~friendships~ and ~peer groups~ are for, but i feel like most people have at least a LITTLE BIT in common with their families. songs they can listen to together and equally enjoy. places they're equally excited to go to. activities everyone looks forward to with genuine eagerness.
i have none of that and i really really really wish that wasn't the case.
also? a lottttttt of the staff who stand by the exhibits and share ~fun facts~ about various animals/plants/etc were high school volunteers. that's so fucking neat!
and in the back of my mind i was so hyperaware that if i had known about such a volunteer opportunity when i was in high school, there is 0 chance that my parents would have been willing to drive me up to baltimore a few days a week. even if it meant having something fantastic to add to my college applications. even if it meant getting valuable exposure in a career field i was interested in at the time.
i mean, ok, baltimore is about 45-60 minutes from here, which IS a bit of a drive, i know.
but where the fuck else around here would there have been an opportunity to immerse myself in something that was so perfectly aligned with my deepest passions and desires? where, within a 10 or 15 minute drive of my home, would i have been able to stand next to a death adder's terrarium and tell guests all about their extremely potent neurotoxic venom or that even though they're morphologically very similar to vipers, they're actually elapids like cobras and mambas?
nowhere! nowhere!
maybe i could have volunteered down at the rinky dink lil nature center near my house and told 2 people per day that the snake in the tank that's clearly labeled as a corn snake in bigass letters is a corn snake.
just, my enrichment and my exposure to the thing i loved most in the world wouldn't have been worth a few hours of my parents time on weekends and that makes me really kinda fucking sad because now im an entire real life grown adult with 0 of the connections or confidence or skills that i'd need to start living a life that actually incorporates my favorite things on a regular and sustainable basis, and now it's MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY PROBLEM to try to fill in all the gaps that my parents were content to leave wide open just because they didnt fucking feel like nurturing the person i truly was.
honest to god, i cant look at a place like the national aquarium or the national zoo or any place like that, and feel like i deserve to even volunteer there. i dont feel like i deserve to even sweep the fucking floor. i'm watching the custodial staff mopping down the floor in the dolphin viewing area and all i can think about is how much i don't deserve to even do that. (which, obviously, isn't to say that being a custodian isn't an Important Job that requires its own skillset, but it's not a skillset that you need 4 years of overpriced education to excel at).
bc my dumb brain can't stop thinking: if my own damn parents didn't think i was important enough to expose me to things i was interested in even, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY would literaally anybody else think i'm worthy of anything at all?? if i'm not important enough to be driven to an amazing volunteer opportunity as a kid, why would that same place think i'm important enough to let me volunteer there even if i did have a ride???? when there are soooooooooo many other kids who ARE important enough for their parents to go out of their way to help them reach their goals?
___________________
AND YOU KNOW WHAT????
my parents did spend significantly more money than most parents spend on their kids for my violin stuff. my violin is Pretty Dang Expensive. they paid out the ass for me to go to tanglewood one summer. they drove me once a week to my violin lessons, which took up a couple hours of their time. i'm appreciative.
but i'm ALSO keenly aware that i literally didn't ask for any of it.
the only thing i DID ask for was to just play the violin in general. but i specifically remember being an orchestra major in middle school and asking my parents if i could take private lessons outside of school, and they unceremoniously told me that no, you greedy little child, we're not paying for more private lessons when you're already in the free music program at school.
but the second i got into high school and my orchestra director told my parents to put me in private lessons, nevermind the fact that i already had free lessons with a very decent teacher at school, my parents signed me up on the spot.
when my violin teacher told my parents to send me to tanglewood, they did. when my violin teacher told my parents to buy me a new, professional quality violin, they did.
they did all of those things because someone who Wasn't Me said it was important.
shit, i remember being like 15 and wanting to get a lil part time job working at petsmart, and they told me i couldn't do it, because they didn't feel like dropping me off or picking me up from the petsmart 10 fucking minutes away from our house.
lmao can you imaginnnneeeee all the confidence and self-actualization i could have developed if even one single thing i asked to do was facilitated and nurtured by my parents?????
and now i have to struggle to learn this shit on my own because it's Not Their Problem if their adult child is struggling??
i hate me.

My father, born in 1924, said as a boy, hitching a ride on a train because his family couldn't afford a car, he never imagined he'd see a man walk on the moon. He talked about that still when he was in his 80s (he lived to 92). He bought his first computer when he was 77 (and learned to use it), although he was also a licensed Ham Radio operator (K9RWP), and built his own radios.
He lived through a lot of that, and it's just the technology. Social changes were almost as rapid. My grandfather's family hid their native ancestry to keep their younger siblings out of boarding schools. My grandmother marched for suffrage in 1916 in St. Louis, so she (and her daughters) could vote. Her children went to high school where the black kids were stuck in the attic. Her grandkids voted a black man into the White House.
In 1970, Alvin Tofler AND Adelaide Farrell wrote the book Future Shock, which talked about the psychological issue, for both individuals and societies, of too rapid a change in too short a period of time to mentally process. In 1972, Orson Welles narrated a documentary about it. Social and technological change has only accelerated since the book's publication.
Tumblr media
I'd add that I think this may be one of the problems when "older" people seem to give "dumb" advice to younger generations. The social environment has changed SO much, older people are often not aware of the changes. I regularly try to explain predatory lending practices used on college students and the ballooning debt to people who graduated college when I did and...they just don't get it. It's so far from their experience, it's hard for them to wrap their minds around. (Some refuse to get it, but others seem genuinely shocked.)
Unfortunately, this creates a chasm between social Elders and youngers, so that the youngers disregard (and disrespect) Elders as "out of touch." My native-raised brain can't quite wrap my mind around that disrespect, although I "get" it at another level. There's still a lot of plain life experience we can share. We just probably can't help you much with your job applications.

Weeklies: Improving
Tumblr media
Good day, learners!
Our projects have experienced significant growth over the week. We used our Second Brain system as a tool for tracking progress, listing priority tasks, and reviewing the relevance of active projects. This allowed us to accomplish more and procrastinate less. We did encounter several instances of procrastination over the week, but they’re within our control.
This week’s highlight is the completion of the YouTube course on Rhetoric and Composition: College Fundamentals. We watched the final six videos, which emphasized the concept of the editing phase and how the skills we learned can be applied to different areas of our lives in a concept called transfer. You'll soon see in this blog the experience and the summary of the lessons we learned from the course.
Next up, we're currently in the initial stages of creating our first digital product: an e-book. There's only one other person who knows about this venture (hi Aei!) among my multiple groups of friends. We figured that while waiting for results from the applications we sent out, we have to figure out how to make profit, albeit passively. The challenge for this venture is its current stage: creating the product. Will it make money? It’s worth trying. After continuous revision and the production of the final output, there remains a list of things to do, including the marketing involved to gain traction and the technicalities involved such as copyright and business registration. We'll tackle those obstacles once we're there.
Fortunately we have a network of people that could help in the pursuit of this venture. We were never known for our practicality, so this desire to publish a book isn't mostly stemming from money. Like we reiterated, it’s a dream to just get our writing out there in any way possible, and consequently add value to those who read them. Overall, this project is exciting because sales is fairly new to us.
The job hunt continues, because the bills are starting to pile up. Because of this, we’ve released our next round of applications last week, and there’s more to go for this week.
Another area of learning includes my other project that I’m hesitant to reveal just yet, since it's still in the early stages of development. We don’t even know where the project is currently headed to! We learned a little bit about the philosophy of existentialism, and I can't wait for this philosophy to be reflected in my future compositions.
We've commenced yet another project, called the 30 Days of Scripture Reading, which is our philosophical undertaking of Christianity. Some existentialist philosophers are also Christians, including Soren Kierkegaard and Fyodor Dostoevsky. We stated during the blog introduction that this polymath undertaking is our personal attempt at living a meaningful life. Right now, existentialism seemed the best option to live our life, but the toolset we could gain from reading the Scripture might be valuable in this undertaking.
Maybe an entire lifetime will not be enough for this journey; there’s just too many questions arising from newfound answers. Integrating our learnings from the book Thinking Better, a shortcut might be helpful. Similar individuals have already carved out a path for a life we aspire to have. It would save us a lot of time to traverse and, in turn, enrich those paths for the next generations. This is how existentialist philosophy has deepened our personal search for a meaningful life.
Finally, here’s a list of a few media that we consumed this week:
Two videos from Ali Abdaal’s mini-series on the 4 most important brain chemicals (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins) with neuroscientist TJ Powers; [1, 2]
A video on making time for reading from Odysseas, another YouTube channel; [3]
A Crash Course YouTube video on Existentialism; [4]
“The Answer is Not a Hut in the Woods” [5] by YouTuber exurb2a, which tapped on themes of being lost in your 20s, adventure, and the people we meet along the way; and
Three podcasts on existentialism.
We also went with two other groups of friends (college and high school), had a virtual meetup with Anne, and maintained a continued effort to communicate with some of our friends. Some of these “social responsibilities” stressed us out on certain days, but the good thing is that we didn’t act on those stresses right away. Instead, we carefully thought of what we could do next time in order to reduce the impact of these stresses. Overcommitting has always been a problem of ours, but sometimes those commitments do pay off. Either way, we’ve learned how balance should ultimately be the goal.
Those are the things that happened this week, and like we always say, keep wandering and chase what excites you.

ADA's Winter Uniform
❛❛Welcome to Abigail Doudeauville Academy, also known as ADA, a prestigious institution and the dream school for every girl in the world. ADA offers comprehensive basic education for young women, complemented by a range of extracurricular activities, those that not only enhance your daughter's abilities but also provide her with a competitive advantage when she prepares her college applications. Without a doubt, ADA stands as the optimal choice for shaping our girls' future.
ADA, the dream school for every girl in the world.❞
Tumblr media
A girls-only school is highly prestigious and praised, only families from the upper class of society can afford to take their daughters to attend such a school; this is the initial setting of the story. Ever since the first versions of the story in my head, I wanted the beginning of the story to take place in a (stereotype of) girls-only school, not only because it adds a bit to the story, but also because I always thought Nijigasaki school was quite "rich"! Since it is a very prestigious school, I decided that the navy blue color could best indicate this, since it gives off a "rich" color vibe (although I admit that the first colors thought of were wine and pink). The light yellow parts provide a contrast that I really liked, along with the school crest that seems to be in gold on the coat. As for the design, there is not much to say, it is what I think of when they talk about a school for girls only, although I admit that this stereotype comes from the animes and mangas that I read and watch.
Tumblr media
Since it is a very demanding school, there are few loopholes for you to be able to "customize" the uniforms - unlike the original Nijigasaki uniform; In addition to the mandatory pieces (coat, skirt, yellow bowtie and a long-sleeved shirt that must be white), the skirt must be below the knee and above the heel and a pair of dark-colored shoes (usually brown). And there are no variables for different years! Unlike Nijigasaki as well...
The only "variables" are the opened coat(which Mia and Ai wear) or the oversized coat (which Rina, Kasumi and Kanata wear). The rest of the characters wear the uniform in the "default" way.
Trivia: The name of the school came from its founder who was French, a piece of lore that my friend invented (she was the one who gave the name to the school)
Tumblr media

Why hello traveller! Welcome to my portfolio for Algonquin College's Animation program! I have been accepted after my 2nd attempt, and so now I upload my portfolio for future applicants to have a good reference for what the college accepts! Unfortunately when I was applying, I could only find a handful of examples for this program, so now I will add myself to that collection.
Here is a link to the portfolio requirements:
Now we begin!
First up are gesture drawings! Warning for drawings of nude people, although there's nothing explicit.
Tumblr media
2 minute
Tumblr media
5 minute
Tumblr media
Various times
Next are the long figure drawings!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The past 3 were actually drawn from lil' statues, so that's an option if you... happen to have nude statues? I dunno lol. I drew these in an art course.
Now my self portrait.
Tumblr media
Page of hands and of feet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Try to really emphasize drawing with form in these.
Next are perspective drawings! It's recommended you have at least 2-3 examples for this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I put these objects in just because I had em, they're not necessary. :)
Now for the fun part! Personals!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally we have the drawing aptitude test, and the Wendy action poses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not going to include my cover letter, but note that is a requirement as well.
Good luck to all those applying! If you happen to have little questions I'll try my best to answer them in my ask box, but I would always recommend going to the program coordinator for the most accurate information! They're info is at the bottom of the portfolio requirements pdf.
Another thing is it's a good idea to also apply to Algonquin's Foundations for Animation and Illustration program! (previously known as Pre-Animation) When I first got rejected I was accepted into Foundations and it really helped me strengthen my art to apply for animation! Also you don't even need a portfolio for it! It's just first come first served! :)

Originally set up as a joke, Dogecoin and also its spin-offs came to be one of the most successful cryptocurrency to buy. Dogecoin was unidentified for many financiers for a long time till Elon Musk started tweeting about it. Then it acquired momentum as well as its cost skyrocketed.
Among the brothers claimed that he considered just how Dogecoin was as soon as a portion of a dime and currently its 10s of countless bucks so possibly the very same could happen with Dogecoin. Turns out he was right and hes got millions on his account to prove it.
Tommy as well as James say:
Prior to coronavirus, we made use of to earn a living shooting wedding celebrations. Our company almost fell apart as couples terminated their ceremonies throughout the pandemic. We had videoed no more than eight as opposed to 30 or 40 that year. We were on the edge of personal bankruptcy.

Breakthrough in computer chip energy efficiency could cut data center electricity use
The findings are important because a data center can consume up to 50 times more energy per square foot of floor space than a typical office building, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. A data center houses an organization’s information technology operations and equipment; it stores, processes and disseminates data and applications. Data centers account for roughly 2% of all electricity use in the United States, the DOE says. According to the U.S. International Trade Commission, the number of data centers has risen rapidly as data demand has soared. In the United States, home to many firms that produce and consume vast amounts of data including Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft and Google, there are more than 2,600 data centers. The advance by John Conley of the OSU College of Engineering, former Oregon State colleague Alan Wang, now of Baylor, and OSU graduate students Wei-Che Hsu, Ben Kupp and Nabila Nujhat involves a new, ultra-energy-efficient method to compensate for temperature variations that degrade photonic chips. Such chips “will form the high-speed communication backbone of future data centers and supercomputers,” Conley said. The circuitry in photonic chips uses photons — particles of light — rather than the electrons that course through conventional computer chips. Moving at the speed of light, photons enable the extremely rapid, energy-efficient transmission of data. The issue with photonic chips is that up until now, significant energy has been required to keep their temperature stable and performance high. The team led by Wang, however, has shown that it’s possible to reduce the energy needed for temperature control by a factor of more than 1 million. “Alan is an expert in photonic materials and devices and my area of expertise is atomic layer deposition and electronic devices,” Conley said. “We were able to make working prototypes that show temperature can be controlled via gate voltage, which means using virtually no electric current.” Presently, Wang said, the photonics industry exclusively relies on components known as “thermal heaters” to fine tune the working wavelengths of high-speed, electro-optic devices and optimize their performance. These thermal heaters consume several milliwatts of electricity per device. “That might not sound like much considering that a typical LED lightbulb uses 6 to 10 watts,” Wang said. “However, multiply those several milliwatts by millions of devices and they add up quickly, so that approach faces challenges as systems scale up and become bigger and more powerful.” “Our method is much more acceptable for the planet,” Conley added. “It will one day allow data centers to keep getting faster and more powerful while using less energy so that we can access ever more powerful applications driven by machine learning, such as ChatGPT, without feeling guilty.”

Why does anyone study any sort of pure science? Engineers commonly argue that the study of pure Physics or pure Maths has no practical applications when in fact so many things that are essential to our society came from those "merely theoretical" fields - such as the transistor, computers, the internet.
It seems clear that they would also fail to see the value in degrees in pure humanities. I mean understanding clear communication, how government or the economy works, how we think about knowledge itself (a field of philosophy mandatory to anyone getting a PhD) might be essential, but is it practical? After all practicality is everything isn't it? You have to be *materially* useful. You have to produce.
Then again, most of my professors see no real value in Engineering degrees, they say it's just a glorified technician, since so many of them are capable of doing the same things an engineer might just by reading a few materials - Let it be clear that I don't agree, that is just a very common thing to hear in the Physics department. No matter that you actually need someone to finalize products, make sure that they are safe and up to standards. To them material practicality is useless, what matters is the knowledge and content produced. So maybe different people value different things? Could that be why their degree is valuable to them even if you don't see it?
And hey, if you are looking for practical applications of the humanities just think of editors or translators, teachers and reviewers, librarians, archivists, curators, the people who make sure the vast cultures we have are properly maintained and endure without being forgotten, the people who inform and communicate, who guide what content will be available for you to see and enjoy.
What you wear is defined by them, the way you speak, the way you write, the things you buy, what you choose to eat. Who do you think writes all those adds? Or that magazine you like to read telling you what the best movies of the season are?
Everything is interconnected, you can't advance one area of knowledge without inadvertently advancing all others.
Also, just to note, people you might think are just "hanging out" in college and aren't really passionate about getting a degree because they seem to be stuck on a roadblock that is "not technically difficult" aren't actually lost, going to college for the sake of it, or just hanging about or anything like that. 9/10 times the tiny roadblock you think you see is really a giant iceberg in the shape of poor mental health and what those people really need is support and understanding, not judgment. So maybe just try to be a little more understanding in the future?
literally all that is standing in the way of me and my degree is
-a paper on captain america being propoganda
-editing a synthesis essay
-a paper on the wild wild historians of the french revolution
-submitting some kind of online training thing
and yet. here i am.
