Clade of the Day: Glossophores

Welcome to Clade of the Day, where we cover different groups of organisms on the collaborative project Sagan 4. Today's clade is the subclass Glossophores, which includes the gulpers and their extinct relatives.

Gulpers are a group of fauna on Sagan 4 which might not immediately be recognizable as plents at all, as they are among the most anatomically derived of the chloropods. They are characterized by their bipedal posture (though some early species were quadrupeds), prehensile tongues, and prominent, often fang-bearing barbels. All modern species have a coat of "plent cotton" as their integument, which evolved during the ice age. Many species produce electricity inside their tongues to stun small prey or defend themselves against predators.

61 glossophores have been recorded on the wiki. The majority of species, even when non-gulper glossophores existed, are true gulpers, and their patterns of evolution and extinction has in general resembled a series of evolutionary grades--from basal gulpers, to dome-heads, to tasertongues, to cottoncoats.

Gulpers once produced a sophont species.

The sagon was actually the second sophont species to evolve on Sagan 4, and it is a sister species to all living gulpers, having appeared shortly before the snowball event. Using its electric tongue, it was able to master fire early on and would use it to smoke out prey, which it would then chase down as a pack. Sagons used butchering tools to cut up their catches, which were then cooked with native roots and berries to make elaborate meals. They are known to have had a religion where they worshiped Sagan 4's moon, Mason, which has a huge valley or sea on its equator facing Sagan 4 which resembles the pupil of an eye.

Unfortunately, mastery of fire and cooking would not remain unique to the sagon. Following the snowball event, its cousins diversified and produced a form which accomplished fire usage and cooking with only a fraction of its brain power, as the ability to produce a spark using the tongue required no tools. However, no other gulper ever gained the power of language and collective imagination, which still sets this brainy offshoot apart from its successors.
