Motivated to talk about selkieverse Cenn and Pisci's deal due to... (checks) two-day-old post. Cenn, as previously noted, is a selkie. A yellow-bellied water snake, more specifically. They're the second in their family line after their dad hit the insanely unlikely chance of being a "genesis" selkie. Pisci's not a selkie and in fact doesn't know a whole lot about how the whole thing Works.

Neither of them have had much contact with other selkies, and don't have much idea of how this whole "selkie thing" works - they're mainly guessing from what they can gather from observation, but they're on a bit of a time limit at the moment, because Cenn's pelt is currently Gone as a result that massive lack of knowledge - no pre-existing connections to other selkies means there aren't a whole lot of people who can clear that up, and Cenn's father wasn't exactly... around much? (fun fact: a lot of species of bug can store sperm from previous partners and just kinda... use it when they want eggs. also he's dead but that part's not really related)

Selkie pelts are valuable. Insanely valuable, in fact. As a result of this, Cenn's pelt got sold off as an older belonging they "probably don't need anymore", and they found out about that when they hit the edge of the range and started feeling the associated discomfort - and then sort of had to chase that further or run into that particular wall again. Pisci's following them because as their friend, seeing them hurt like that scared the shit out of her, and she's that specific level of ride-or-die that'll go on a trip halfway around Bugaria for her one friend.

Fortunately, they have a built-in detector for the conditions that the pelt is in. Unfortunately, they don't really have much guide for where the pelt is, beyond a vague pointer of "what direction is it in?" which isn't always helpful. Even more unfortunately, they have no damn clue about any of the general etiquette around selkie pelts, so they're wandering around looking for a specific selkie pelt while not indicating why they want that, and they stop being very forthcoming about what they're looking for after a few poor reactions, which... isn't great for impressions.

Day 23: What is your favorite type of whump setting?

in terms of temporal setting, I really enjoy present day stuff - I enjoy the familiarity of the setting, and in terms of writing I don’t have to constantly google shit like ‘when was the cotton ball invented’ (real thing I’ve actually done). that being said, I do also like historical, particularly wartime, situations. anything pre-1900 is usually a bit too early for me though - I like some degree of modernity. favorite historical time periods for me include WWII and the cold war.

going for place, I like urban settings most of all. back alleys where the whumpee gets beaten up out of sight of passerby, bustling streets for them to stumble through with a gunshot wound hidden beneath their jacket, abandoned buildings to explore or be tortured in, cars to be hit by, the list goes on. I generally love any setting that feels real, and cities are so good at that. they’re gritty and dark at the right times, but they’re also places where whumpee & friends live and work and exist, yknow?
