The Day After
The government called the presidential election for Maduro. Many question the results.
Roughly an hour after the opposition said that they only had access to 30% of the official voting tallies -a key document to audit the election results- because Venezuela’s election authority (CNE) had blocked the transmission of the results to the totaling center, the President of the CNE, Maduro hardliner Elvis Amoroso, announced these results: with 80% of the transmitted votes and with a participation of 59%, Nicolás Maduro won with 5,150,092 votes (51.20%); landing Edmundo González Urrutia in second place with 4,445,978 votes (44.2 %).
Also, Amoroso apologized for the delay. Although Venezuela’s elections system is quite efficient, the CNE still waited until midnight to give the results. Amoroso said the delay was due to some sort of sabotage and asked Maduro’s prosecutor general to open an investigation. Prosecutor Tarek William Saab had said before that he would be holding a press conference the next morning at 11 am.
One hour after message, María Corina Machado and González Urrutia talked to the press. “I’ll go first,” said Machado, “Venezuela has a new president elect in Edmundo González Urrutia. It was an overwhelming win… We won.”
“It was historic,” she continued, “four quick counts gave the same results as exit polls, and right now we have more than 40% of the official voting tallies that confirm it. Edmundo González Urrutia won with 70% of the vote against Maduro’s 30%. It’s the presidential election with the largest victory margin in Venezuelan history.”
Machado went on to say that “the whole international community knows what happened, but most importantly Venezuelans know… The members of Plan República, the military citizens, also know…”
Machado asked people to pressure until all official tallies have been printed and that they should stand behind the polling station witnesses.
González Urrutia concurred, and said that “their fight continues until the will of the Venezuelan people is respected.” When asked if they were calling people to the streets he said they weren’t, that this was a movement of peace.
Some international reactions: Anthony Blinken gave a message immediately after the results were made public and asked for a recount. Chile’s Gabriel Boric questioned the results and the Government of Costa Rica was very frontal in saying that what happened in Venezuela was a fraud. On the axis; Nicaragua, Cuba and Bolivia congratulated Maduro.

Disclaimer: this is an unpleasant TMI post regarding the harrowing chronicles of being a vagina-haver...
So, when we came back from Costa Rica on Feb 4, I brought back strep throat, and I recently finished a 10-day course of antibiotics for that. But other things were coming up around the time I was finishing that off, so I went to urgent care last Sunday to find out that I not only had a UTI, which I've had a few times before, but I had my very first yeast infection as well. 🙃🙃 What a joyous occasion... 😑 So I got two separate antibiotics for those.
And yet, cut to today, where I had a follow-up tele-visit to find out that 1) the strain of bacteria of my UTI is a pretty bad one and resistant to many kinds of antibiotics, so even though just this morning I finished my original UTI antibiotics, I'm going to get another 3-day course of one that's stronger. And the real kicker is 2) I also have BV, which is totally new to me and I had to look into it. Seems like whatever fuckery that caused the first two things would be involved with that too, I assume. But that's ANOTHER antibiotic that will be a 7-day course; and that one is strictly no alcohol, so that's a nice cherry on top.
I wonder what the fuck happened. All I can think of is a combo of stress from traveling and then the strep antibiotics wiping out my system and causing other problems, and being sexually active during all that... Must've been a perfect storm.
I'm so tired of being on antibiotics. 😭 Just want to be fixed, I haven't been healthy since we got back which will be 3 weeks come Sunday.
Just chugging kombucha over here... 🥲

The Costa Rica anon sent another drop to Lonesome, saying that the pictures will be sold to E!News. I guess they read the discussion about how the tabloid didn't add up, and are now course correcting. Lol.// Would like to apologize for my earlier question about “E!Mag” 😂 I now understand. Also, I’ve never known E! News to show up at a hotel lobby on Costa Rica to get pap pics. 🤣 For real they would be taken by someone like Back Grid or Splash and sold to outlets…and E! Isn’t one of the preferred ones for that.
LOL, all of this is just such a troll. I'm still of half a mind that a Chris/Alba shipper got pissed off at my "London chronicles" asks yesterday and came up with this to show how amazingly in love the couple is.

Turkish tea, chamomile, matcha
(From Tea Asks)
turkish tea: where have you travelled?
I've taken "normal" vacations to a few places - London, Paris, a small town I don't remember the name of but somewhere between Toulouse and Carcassonne, once to Nassau - but the majority of traveling I've done has either been for my own academic reasons (e.g. a conference in Hong Kong, going to Arecibo with an astronomy professor for whom I was writing software, a glee club tour of Brazil, a band trip to Costa Rica) or because my spouse was going to a conference and so I came along just to see a cool city (Honolulu, Cardiff, Krakow, Lausanne).
Also one year my spouse had conferences in Venice and Cardiff within a month of each other, and we convinced the entire engineering team of the tiny company I worked for to do a half-work, half-vacation retreat where we got airbnbs in Venice, then Munich, then Vienna over a three-week period, so that was a lot of fun (I loved Munich's entire-island-spanning science museum, and really should go back there again someday since the time we had wasn't enough to see all of it).
chamomile: comfort movie?
Hmmm. I don't know that I really have one? I mostly watch things if other people are watching them with me, and play video games if I'm just entertaining myself. But if I had to pick one, it would probably be one of A) The Road to El Dorado, B) Bringing Up Baby, or C) Star Wars: A New Hope.
matcha: favourite book?
I am very bad at picking favorites of anything, so here are a few:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will always hold a special place in my heart, it being a book that I memorized much of as a child. I suspect it was very influential in shaping my sense of humor.
This Is How You Lose The Time War, by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, is probably the best book I've read in recent memory. I would describe it as a queer enemies-to-lovers story against the backdrop of a massive war fought across all of time and space between two incredibly technologically advanced civilizations. It's partly epistolary, and the writing is absolutely beautiful. And of course there's lots of time travel.
The entirety of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
The Murderbot Chronicles, by Martha Wells. One of my favorite protagonists.
I wrote the post up to this point and now any time I try to add more and save or queue the post it reverts to this state, sitting in my drafts, which is weird. I'm gonna try just posting it outright and see what happens

Sarah J Maas KoA Tour Highlights
Tumblr media
Here are some compiled highlights from SJM’s KoA tour in Chicago, October 25, 2018.
Sarah was vacationing in Costa Rica, about five years ago, when the last line of the entire ToG series popped into her head. It made it through the cuts and it is now the last line of KoA.
Lysandra was not supposed to be a main character, BUT she was driving with her husband when she saw in her head Lysandra shifting and turning into a giant ghost leopard and ripping some man’s head off. Then she had to include her more.
Sarah is super heavily inspired by music. Each character has a theme song.
Aedion is such a fanboy over Rowan. He was his idol. When they first met, Rowan gave him a knife which Aedion ADORES to this day.
The series, when Sarah was only sixteen and writing it, was previously called Queen of Glass.
Abraxos was inspired by Sarah’s cousin’s dog. His name was Buddy and he was found dumped at the side of the road, half dead, and used for dog fighting. He was a “bait” dog. Even though he had had a horrible experience in life, he was still the sweetest most trusting dog ever. He couldn’t be broken... and neither can Abraxos.
Sarah wrote fanfics for her own early drafts where Aelin and Rowan were not together. The fics mainly consisted of “badly written” Rowaelin smut.
Chaol is an ugly crier.
The glue the publishing company purchased could only bind 1,000 pages. Sarah’s final final draft of KoA was 1,020 pages. The editors worked to squeeze it in so KoA could be bound without falling apart.
There are a lot of things we do not know about that Sarah knows about in the world. For example: Ansel’s backstory and what lies in the Staghorn Mountains. Some of those secrets will be revealed in The World of Throne of Glass.
The World of Throne of Glass will be coming out next year (sometime) and will chronicle the wars, and give glimpses into TEN years after the events of KoA. We will see some OG characters.
If the characters were in the Great British Baking show, Aelin would lose because she would accidentally burn her cake, get upset, throw it out, and get kicked off the show. Rowan and Chaol wouldn’t be into it because they don’t like sweets, Aedion would try his hardest and only keep passing rounds because he’s charming and hot, Nesryn would do awesome because her dad is a baker, and Dorian has fine tastes and would be Nesryn’s top rival. In the end, Nesryn would win.
Taran is adorable.
She teased she doesn’t know if the series (or any spinoff in the world) is over yet. She said: “Maybe I’ll write another seven books” and the audience cheered immensely, and also commented “the door is not shut”.
CRESCENT CITY, her new book she has been working on in her free time, will have ACOTAR level of smut and gore, is set 2000 years or so in the future of its own world. Science+Magic. She sold the book with a one page synopsis and a Pinterest board.
ACOFAS is like the “christmas special” in her mind.
She has written 200 pages of the Nessian book already. It will be a full length installment.
Each book coming after the Nessian one will have their own pair, and at least one will be set 1,000s of years before Feyre and Rhys. They will come out after Crescent City.
If Rowan and Aelin “survive and are able to have children”, their godparents would be Lysandra and Aedion.
If Rowan and Aelin had a daughter who went out on a date, she would look up and see a white tailed hawk stalking her. At the restaurant they would eat at, they’d see Lysandra and Aelin looking up above a menu watching. When her date meets Aelin she’d be a ball of flame and super intimidating: “If you hurt my child I will burn you”.
If Lorcan had a daughter, he would secretly love doing her hair and dressing her up.
Aelin and Nesta both read smut.
Feyre and Rowan are the most like each other, so are Aelin and Rhys.
If Aelin and Rhys ever fought, Aelin would fight dirty and Rhys would not. It was a hard choice, but Rhys would win at the end of the day.
Aelin is the most like Elsa. Rowan: Shang because he is cute when he is angry, he’d be Zazu when he shifted. Feyre: Mulan because she sacrificed so much for her father. Rhys: Flynn because he would be upset that someone got his nose wrong on a wanted poster.
And that’s it guys! That was a lot of typing.
Tagging: @propshophannah, @aly-of-the-wildfire, @aelin-and-feyre
I had so much fun at this event, and I got to meet some sweet people from Tumblr. Sarah is heavenly, as well.

Apollo 11 brought a message of peace to the Moon - but Neil and Buzz almost forgot to leave it behind
by Michelle L.D. Hanlon
Tumblr media
President Richard M. Nixon welcomes the Apollo 11 astronauts aboard the USS Hornet, the recovery ship for the mission, where they are quarantined. From left to right: Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. Aldrin. NASA
“How about that package out of your sleeve? Get that?” is certainly not the most famous phrase uttered by a human while on the Moon. And the items nestled in a small packet that astronaut Buzz Aldrin had stowed in the pocket just below the shoulder of his extravehicular mobility unit were certainly not mission critical. They were sentimental objects, intended to be left on the Moon purely for symbolic and commemorative purposes.
Tumblr media
Apollo 15 astronauts David R. Scott and James B. Irwin left a commemorative plaque on the Moon in memory of 14 NASA astronauts and USSR cosmonauts. The tiny, man-like object represents the figure of a fallen astronaut/cosmonaut. NASA
More than one hundred sites
You may be surprised to learn that a partial catalog of human-made objects on the Moon fills more than 20 single-spaced pages. There are more than a hundred sites on the Moon with evidence of human activity. The sites contain materials from the European Space Agency, Japan, India, Russia, China and the United States. Not only do these sites contain ongoing experiments, they hold invaluable data. For example, engineers are hoping to examine these materials to determine how they have fared after continuous exposure to the elevated radiation levels on the Moon. Along with scientific equipment, robotic landers and other objects left behind to lighten the load for the return home, there are a number of memorial and tributary items.
But perhaps most important, these varied objects, and their position on the lunar surface, alone can reveal the true story of humanity’s history on the Moon. A chronicle which celebrates the persistence and passion of hundreds and of thousands of scientists, engineers and aviators throughout human history who have supported the effort to “slip the surly bonds of Earth” and reach the stars.
I am not a historian. I am a space lawyer and have made it my mission to develop the laws we need to protect historic artifacts and sites in space. I co-founded For All Moonkind, the only organization in the world dedicated to preserving human heritage in outer space, to assure that archaeologists, historians, scientists and tourists are given the opportunity to learn the valuable lessons of our past.
Messages of peace
Buzz Aldrin and fellow Moonwalker Neil Armstrong chose to go to the Moon with an Apollo 1 patch. It was selected to honor the ultimate sacrifice of astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, who perished in a fire during the first test of the Apollo command and service module. The astronauts also chose to remember their fallen Soviet competitors and carried with them two Soviet medals, honoring cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, who died in the Soyuz 1 spacecraft in 1967 and Yuri Gagarin, the first man to orbit the Earth, who was killed in an aircraft in 1968. Aldrin and Armstrong understood that even as Americans raced the Soviets to the Moon, success would be shared by all.
That’s why they also carried a small gold olive branch – a global symbol of peace – and a silicon disk about the size of a United States half dollar. Inscribed on this disk in microscopic text are messages from the president of the United States and leaders of other 73 nations solicited by Thomas Paine, then head of NASA. The messages, intended to be left on the Moon for posterity, are poignant, proud and congratulatory. Some speak of their own national heritage, others salute the courage of the three humans who strapped themselves into a rocket and catapulted into the unknown. From Afghanistan to Zambia, the messages have one common theme: peace.
Tumblr media
The Apollo 11 lunar module shows the stainless steel dedication plaque. The signatures are of the three Apollo 11 crew members and President Richard Nixon. NASA
Neil Armstrong’s favorites
According to his biographer, James Hansen, Neil Armstrong identified three favorite messages. The president of Costa Rica hoped the Moon landing would produce “new benefits for improving the well-being of the human race.” The king of the Belgians remained “deeply conscious of our responsibility with respect to the tasks which may be open to us in the universe, but also to those which remain to be fulfilled on this Earth, so to bring more justice and more happiness to mankind.” Finally, the president of the Ivory Coast asked that the first human messengers to the Moon “turn towards our planet Earth and cry out how insignificant the problems which torture men are, when viewed from up there.”
I personally find the message of the president of Mexico rather prescient as he noted “in 1492, the discovery of the American Continent transformed geography and the course of human events. Today, conquest of ultraterrestrial space – with its attendant unknowns – recreates our perspectives and enhances our paradigms.” He went on to remind that human migration to space carries with it “a new far reaching responsibility.”
Tumblr media
The figure shows a gold replica of an olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace, an Apollo 1 patch and a silicon message disk. NASA
Forgotten?
Space historian Tahir Rahman, who has published an award-winning book that tells the full story of the Messages of Peace, recounts that Aldrin and Armstrong nearly forgot to leave the disc and other mementos on the lunar surface. Indeed, according to NASA records and transcripts, it wasn’t until the Moonwalkers were climbing back into their spacecraft for the return journey to Earth when they realized their oversight. At the last minute, the disc was tossed from the ladder and settled in the regolith without pomp or circumstance. Once in the capsule, Armstrong verified that “the disk with messages was placed on the surface as planned.”
The mystery is not that these busy astronauts almost forgot to leave the disc behind. After all they were pretty occupied being the first humans to set foot on the Moon. I think it is strange that the two most popular films about Apollo 11 released in the last year, “First Man” and “Apollo 11,” make no mention of the disc and its moving and hope-filled messages.
On July 20, 1969, the world united to celebrate the most remarkable technological achievement in human experience. And in that celebration, our leaders focused on our common hope for peace. This is the lesson of humanity’s effort to reach the Moon. I believe this is the history that we must embrace. It is our responsibility to explore space in peace, together as a species.
Let’s not forget, or forsake, the lessons of our past. The first step is to protect the sites which chronicle our history on the Moon. And hopefully, along the way we can recapture the goodwill that Neil and Buzz left behind.
