Special feather care.

When I took this picture I was wondering a bit what this crow was doing, but looking at the pictures on my computer I noticed little specks on the feathers and zooming in I saw ants.

So my guess is that this crow was anting. Anting is a known behavior. Birds sit down in a place with lots of ants. Scientist think they do it because the ants secrete liquids that contain chemicals such as formic acid, which is sort of an insecticide and helps the bird to get rid of ectoparasites. There are other theories as well.

I know barely anyone has seen this bird irl since it’s been extinct in the wild since 2002, but have you done the ‘Alalā ( hawaiian crow ) ? They are currently the most endangered corvid species ( about 120 individuals as of january 2024 ), I would die for them and I want everyone to know about them

Always water your food. At least this crow does it, because the food will be delivered to the crow chicks in the nest.

And here a close-up. The light was quite good for letting the black feather shine.

On the coast, it hunts in salt marshes and tidal flats, and scavenges on the beach. Inland, it ranges through swamps and along rivers.
