summary: after making the mistake of proposing to a corpse who wants to keep you as his own, all you want is to make your way back to the man you’re supposed to marry: katsuki bakugou 

Now when he opened his eyes he was dead as dust his jewels were missing and his heart was bust So he made a vow lying under that tree That he’d wait for his true love to come set him free Always waiting for someone to ask for his hand

prequel - according to plan - k. bakugou (corpse bride au) 

you were unsure if you were dreaming or not. before you, in a bar, sat a cluster of skeletons. very much alive skeletons. 

and there were... “are you...zombies?” your voice shook. 

someone gasped. “excuse me?” 

“i...i’m sorry, but i-” 

“how offensive! dearest midoriya, this is the person you intend to marry?” 

your hands shook. “what?” 

“they proposed to me in those woods. the woods where i was waiting for years. they must have meant it.” the boy who you’d come to know as midoriya took your had and led you down. he fixed his raggedy tuxedo, ripped, with the stench of something rotten. he squeezed your arm. “it was delightful! dear, you got your vows just right!” 

you tugged your arm back, still shaking. “that’s not...i had no idea that you-” 

you crashed into something while walking back. a skull landed in your hands. 

“please put me down,” the skull said politely. 

you shrieked, tossing the skull across the room. 

midoriya rested a hand on your shoulder. “dear, is everything alright?” 

your heart was beating so fast you thought it would bruise your rib cage. “i...i’m not supposed to be here. you’re all...you’re all...” 

you swallowed and looked around the room. midoriya blinked patiently. his eye popped from its socket and landed on the hardwood floors with a wet splat. a worm peaked out from inside his socket. “they’re quite attractive,” it said wriggling around. “good find.” 

“oh, shush,” midoriya said, flicking his temple. the worm groaned as it wiggled back into place. he leaned down and grabbed his eye from the ground, turning around in a courteous manner, pulling the socket open and pushing his eye back in. “sorry about that, darling.” he gave you a smile, much too nonchalant for what just occurred. 

you stepped back, slipping on the spot where his eye had landed and flipping onto your bum.  “you’re all...dead!!” 

the bar rustled collectively, offended. 

“darling.” midoriya reached down and extended his hand for you. “so are you.” 

“no, no you don’t get it. i’m alive! i’m from...up there! with living people! who have skin and brains and-” 

“denial is something we all go through, dear.” the bartender wandered over to you, wrapping their bony fingers around you arm and tugging you up. “but you could be a bit nicer about it.” 

“i’m...i’m not dead. i’m not denying it.” 

midoriya smiled sweetly. shock passed through the crowd. he hid a bit of a pain behind the toothy grin, his white cheekbone slightly revealed by a patch of rotting skin shriveling back. 

“perhaps they are a breather,” someone in the crowd muttered. 

you nodded frantically. “yes. yes, i belong...i belong up there.” 

a tiny skeleton, most likely belonging to the frame of a tiny child, poked your leg. “look! they’re still soft!” 

you gasped, pulling back. “please, i don’t even know who you are!” you looked back to your supposed husband, wearing the ring that was supposed to be around katsuki’s finger. it fit perfectly. “where am i?” 

your mind finally cleared. you weren’t dreaming. these were skeleton’s. these were rotting people. these were corpses. 

you shuddered when midoriya let out a giggle. his eye suddenly popped out, the green worm-like thing peaking out and curling in his socket. “do they have cold feet?” it spoke with a voice. the worm had a voice. midoriya struggled to catch his eye before popping it back in. 

“sorry,” he chuckled. “maggots, you know.” 

“where am i?” you repeated. 

“well,” he began, “it’s quite a long story.” 

“one we don’t mind telling,” said a blue woman. 

“simply put,” said the skeleton dragging its fingers along the piano in a grotesque melody, “our sweet midoriya is a dead groom.” 

two skeletons at a pool table continued. “our gorgeous, deceased groom. when he was younger, how long ago was it?” 

“not too long.” midoriya sat down at the bar. “i haven’t been dead for that long, have i?” 

the skeleton continued as the rest of the bar burst into chatter about his story. “when midoriya was alive, he was swept off his feet by quite the fine fellow, however that fellow was cruel at heart. selfish and cold. all they wanted was some cash.” 

“c-cash?” you managed to utter, still trying to process how a skeleton was speaking without a tongue. 

“indeed. his family forbid it, so they curated a plan to marry in secret.” 

you waited on edge for a conclusion. 

“our poor baby was tricked into bringing their family’s riches just to be murdered.” 

a shocked sound fell from your lips. the bar erupted with more shatter, the walls shaking with blaring instrumental music and a debate on whether the story was told correctly or not. 

you took your chance and escaped up a hidden stairwell. compared to the noise rattling the building, your footsteps were nothing more than a mouse’s small paws. 

you crept away, finding yourself in a small town identical to the one you were supposed to be in. blue people, rotting people, skeletons, decomposing bodies withering and wasting away playing poker on the sides of the streets. 

it was a constant habit to check behind your back, desperate to see if there was anything ghostly lingering there. 

it was most shocking to find that the dead were not writhing in pain, nor were they rage-consumed spirits. they were normal people, even within death. 

“y/n?” 

a shiver trailed down your spine as a smooth voice called your name. you ran, finding yourself between small nooks and crannies as your name continued to echo throughout the town. 

panting, you found yourself at a dead end. there was a balcony right up above, and you began climbing the moment you mounted your foot upon the first imperfection in the bricks. 

you climbed, climbed until you reached the top and grasped on to the railing. you hooked your hand around something stiff and...brittle? 

you nearly fell as you shrieked, pulling your hand back, but you weren’t stupid enough to let go of midoriya’s ankle. 

“you could have used the stairs, silly.” he reached down and pulled you up with ease. his eyes glistened in the dead moonlight. “you can see everything from here, can’t you? it’s gorgeous.” 

you agreed, voice shaking terribly. midoriya paced to the bench stationed against the wall opposite of where you guys were standing. he patted the spot next to him—a silent invitation. 

with a gulp, you sat down beside him, keeping your limbs nearly crushed to your sides to avoid making contact with him. 

your mind wandered, searching for some reason, some excuse to go up to the surface. 

“oh,” midoriya broke the silence, “i have a wedding gift for you.” he reached down. concealed beneath the bench was a medium-sized box. you held it in two hands, shaking it softly and hearing the contents rock hesitantly inside. 

unraveling the crusted, old red bow, you opened the box. inside was a single ring, the stone set in it a small, shimmering sapphire. 

“i suppose, since we’re married—” his fingers fluttered, letting the golden ring flash in the dead moonlight, “—that it would be formal for you to have a ring yourself. here.” his bony fingers took your hand, resting it in his skinless palm. the sterling silver ring slipped around your finger perfectly, conforming to the shape and size of your hand. 

you swallowed. “thank you.” 

“of course.” he grinned proudly, dimples pressing into his cheeks. 

you sighed, finding a bit of comfort with the ring hugging your finger. “my mother would have never approved of such a thing. might have made some snarky comment about the color or size. then again, she never really approved of very much.” 

midoriya paused, pressing a thoughtful finger to his freckled chin. “perhaps, she would have approved of me?” 

a light bulb blinked to life in your mind. “well, i’m not quite so sure. perhaps we should go and meet her.” 

his emerald eyes brightened, shimmering. “that’s a splendid idea! please, show me to where they are buried.” 

“well,” you tilted your head, “the issue is that they’re still. well, you know.” you pointed to the sky. 

midoriya’s jaw dropped in a soft gasp. “oh, they’re still alive. well, i don’t believe that should be too much of an issue.” one bony hand curled around your fleshy wrist. he was oblivious to the feeling of your thundering pulse. 

“come along now, dear.” midoriya led you away from the balcony. the two of you traveled through the town, whizzing past the once-living. you followed him up a narrow stairwell, winding and twisting until you reached an open room that was near tumbling over onto the street. 

you almost worried over the possibility of it hurting people if it did. 

behind a long, wooden table stood a (you guessed) a man, hunched over with age that was purely composed of bones. he still had chunks of jet black hair clinging to his bare skull. 

he fixed a pair of goggles upon his eyeless sockets, squinting. you cringed. 

“midoriya? what could you possibly need at a time like this?” 

“aizawa, this is my newlywed spouse, y/n.” 

“i heard of a wedding in town. guessed it was you with all the waiting you’ve been doing by that stupid oak tree.” 

“yes, well,” midoriya cleared his throat, “we came here to request your assistance in getting, well.” he pointed up. “up there.” 

“to the land of the living? whatever could you want to do with them?” 

before midoriya had a chance to speak, you cut in. “personal reasons, kind sir. is there anything you can do about this? anything at all?” 

the skeleton you’d come to know as aizawa fished into a bag, flipped through pages of about three books, and came out with a raven egg. “when you want to come back, just say hopscotch.” 

midoriya clapped his hands together, laughing giddily. “hopscotch!” 

aizawa cracked the egg, and a creamy, cloud-like substance came flowing out, the color of pure gold, dazzling with sparkles. 

it engulfed both you and midoriya, and soon the two of you found yourselves back where he had dragged you to the land of the dead. 

although it’d been merely a few hours since you left, the moonlight felt foreign on your features. the pale beams blessed your face, the fresh air washing your cheeks in blissfulness. 

“i’d almost forgotten how gorgeous the moonlight was. and the moon is full!” midoriya exclaimed like an excited child. 

you agreed to his comment humbly. “i should probably alert my parents that you’re here. so, you know, they don’t freak out or anything.” 

he nodded understandingly. 

“wait here. i’ll be back soon,” you lied. 

“alright.” 

you positioned him on a rock, hands firm on his shoulders to add emphasis to your need for him to wait there and not move. “no peeking.” 

he giggled brightly. “of course.” 

“promise?” 

midoriya smiled, toothy grin flashing white. “promise.” 

you felt trust settle in the centre of your chest before sighing. midoriya turned around, and you darted in the opposite direction, footsteps crunching lightly in the fresh coat of snow. 

despite you two barely knowing each other, you felt that midoriya truly wasn’t one to distrust you unless someone gave him a reason to, nor would he break a promise so easily. 

while you’d blatantly lied to him, you didn’t feel all too bad about it. you couldn’t deny the guilt prodding at your temples to turn back as you rushed away to the bakugou estate, but you just wanted to go back and tell katsuki that you, in fact, did not have cold feet about the sudden marriage arrangement and wanted to marry him immediately. 

katsuki and you were both equally nervous upon meeting one another, but looking back on it, it was something you two already had in common. you wouldn’t mind falling in love with someone like that, and you were sure it wouldn’t be an issue for love to blossom overtime. 

rain was beginning to sprinkle down from the clouds, as if in warning to turn back to midoriya. you rejected the offer to redeem your lying self and raced all the way to the towering mansion of the bakugou estate. 

without a second thought (or anything thinking done at all), you began climbing the slippery bricks. the rain started pounding on your back, the droplets thick and heavy on your back. 

you hurled yourself over the ledge, landing on the platform that was katsuki’s balcony. the only thing separating you and him was the glass doors, which you pushed open without hesitation. 

he let out an audible gasp and turned to view your soaked figure standing in the doorway. “y/n? what are you doing here?” 

only a day, barely a few hours over, and you’d already learned to adore the harshness of his voice. 

“Katsuki,” you breathed, huffing out hot breaths that curled in clouds before you due to the rain. he caught you in his strong arms, letting you lean on his chest despite the rainwater leaking from you to his suit. 

“come by the fire.” he led you to the cracking flames, sweeping a blanket over your shuddering body. “are you an idiot? all this cold could have gotten you killed.” 

despite his rough wording, you knew he meant well. “katsuki, despite what any of the people have told you, disregard all of it. i do want to marry you.” 

the shock on his face was unmistakable, deep red eyes flaring wide. 

“i know. i vanished at one of the worst possible times.” you cuddled yourself deeper into the thick blanket. “but truly, i do want to be with you. and i believe we can love each other. in time, i believe we will.”

midoriya tapped his foot, awaiting your return, hopefully with good news. 

“i don’t have a good feeling about this. they’ve been gone for a while.” 

midoriya shuddered, knocking on the side of his head for a bit until the red and white spotted worm came flying out of his ear. “go eat someone else’s brains out for a bit, todoroki. i’m absolutely positive y/n has a valid reason for taking such a long while.” 

“really?” the spotted worm came inching towards midoriya, leaving a trail in the snow. “why don’t you go ask them, then?” 

“that would be breaking my promise to them. stop trying to switch the truth on me.” midoriya crossed his arms like a child. 

todoroki inched closer. “a promise goes both ways, yes? you’re fulfilling your part just fine. how can you be so sure that y/n is, too?” 

midoriya hesitated. “well, that’s part of marriage. trusting one another.” 

the spotted worm scoffed. “do you recall that just an hour ago, they were screaming and running from you and telling you they should be married to someone else?” 

having enough, midoriya stood, fists clenched. “alright, then, if you’re so sure, i will ask them.” 

todoroki wiggled to the side and pointed with his slimy tail in the direction of your footsteps.

katsuki trailed a finger down your cheek before patting you down with a towel. “what happened?” 

“promise you’ll believe me?” you said. 

you could see the bits of distrust lingering in his eyes, but katsuki nodded anyways and continued patting your damp forehead. 

“i’m married to a...a dead man.” 

“what?” he halted his work. 

“it was completely an accident, but it happened. everything is still so blurry, and i can barely recall anything.” you stood, gently pushing his hand from your face. you began pacing his room, shoes and clothes dripping onto the floorboards. 

katsuki stood and held your shoulders firmly, putting a stop to your heavy footsteps. “I believe you. thank you for-” 

the doors suddenly flew open. raindrops invaded the room, wind raging along with it. 

midoriya brushed off his outfit. “i’m so sorry, darling, but i just-” his eyes flew wide as he let out a soft gasp at the sight of you and katsuki standing scarily close. he marched up to your side and took your arm, tugging you to his side. “darling? who are you with?” 

katsuki shriveled under the dead gaze of midoriya, but refused to back down. instead, the blonde puffed his chest. “who are you?” 

midoriya held out a dainty hand. “their husband.” 

katsuki was still taken aback even though you’d already told him. as if he didn’t really believe you. 

you took note of his offence. “no, katsuki.” you reached for him, but miserably, you were pulled back by your husband. “as i told you, it was an accident! i never meant to marry him!” 

you heard your supposed husband’s gasp fall from his lips, and before you could think to apologize to him or any anything more to katsuki, you were pulled back to the balcony, and the word hopscotch was being uttered right near your ear.
