Summary: You are in the early phases of your relationship with Satoru where you haven't even kissed each other yet. Taking things comfortingly and achingly slow. Unfortunately for you, you’re reminded of his ‘Uncommitted Fuckboy’ & he reassures you through it. Warnings: None really, just extreme fluff and comfort and Satoru being a care-giver and a Daddy pro max!
Your brother came back from a gathering of sorts, it was all related to Jujutsu High and being a third-year there, he was privy to a lot of information you weren’t. Though now that you’re dating his Sensei without actually telling him, your questions & curiosities have increased a tenfold. “So, how was your day?”
Your brother came in, opened the fridge like a racoon in a dumpster & took out a Coke zero, clearly tired & a tad annoyed. “S’ good.” He chuckles, rolling his eyes. “Something very funny happened today.”
You irked a brow, mostly all the funny things are related to your now boyfriend. "What happened?" You asked, curiosity bubbling behind your eyes.
"There's this sorcerer- her name's Mei Mei, she flirts with Sensei so hard it's hilarious!" He cackled, manspreading on the dining table seat after microwaving the sandwich and sighed. "She was all like- 'of course Satoru kun, you can help me can't you?' because she was assigned a mission which was seemingly hard." You felt a pang of anxiety touch your chest at that, nodding with a faked smile. Can't show your brother you're affected by this after all.
"H-heh, funny… what did he say?" You inquired, and your brother shrugged. "Said he would help." You bite your lip, of course- Satoru is not someone to refuse his aid to anyone. Even you knew that about him… but clearly, did he not pick up the signals? "Shyeah- of course." You waved your hand dismissively. "I think they have done it definitely." Your brother snickers. "I mean- Sensei is so popular I'm sure all the female sorcerers would've wanted a piece of him." He groans, "So annoying to me though."
You smiled, not able to maintain this conversation without it affecting your core. Satoru was gorgeous, he could pick a finger at anything and would get that for himself. There was absolutely no doubt about it. Which is why… it's concerning as to why he is dating someone like you. Someone so normal, someone miles away from the Jujutsu world. Someone who had no place in his world. He was utterly sweet to you as well. So far you haven't had any arguments with him either. A defeated sigh escaped your parted lips as the thoughts multiplied and cluttered your mind. You went to your room to sulk. As if being a Corporate baddie wasn't enough. Now you also need to take account of what's happening in Jujutsu world with your boyfriend. Sickening…
As if to balm your insecurity with reassurance, Satoru's name flashed on your phone screen in a phone call. "Hello.." You answered the phone hesitantly.
"Oh hello Little One! How are ya? Just checkin' up on you. Hope you don't mind that mm?" "No, not at all, I've just come home from work. How are you?" You tried to sound as normal as you can, the lower octave of your voice not gone unnoticed despite you stiffening yourself up to sound as normal as you can. "Something the matter Princess?" The nickname slipped out of his lips so easily, right now you wonder if it's so easy because its meaningless. "Nah, nothing's the matter. My brother just came home you know? So I was just talking to him about er- school and stuff." You answered half-truth. Satoru's head tilted to the side, tongue clicking. "Something that pissed you off?" He asked softly, and you nodded your head yes, but your voice lied. "Nah, s' al good. Don't worry. Maybe I'm just really tired you know?" "Mhm, gotcha~ maybe, you are tired… you know what can help? A sugar rush." Satoru snickered over the phone and you sighed. There is no way you can escape this man's gaze if you were to meet him right now. "Nah, really tired. Headachey too…" You excuse yourself, biting your lip and squeezing your eyes shut at the silence on the other side. "Alright, take rest." Satoru sounded genial and soft, and with that you heard the beep of the call disconnecting.
You were starting to get angry at yourself, why does it even matter. You two haven't even been together for a month yet. This is truly pathetic…
You shoved all the thoughts off your head, journalling them off. Whatever… who cares. Yeah, whatever…
The next few days you tried your best to ignore Satoru, picking up his calls and answering in one-word sentences, declining his proposal to meet for dates or to just catch-up. Until you finally saw him one day at your home. You gasped, blinking when you opened the door and found him manspreading on the couch as if he owned the place.
"Sah- Satoru what`" "He's just here to be a nuisance." Your brother's voice chimed in from his room. "He needs something from me." You glanced at Satoru, who quickly removed his blindfold and made sure his eyes stared right into you. "Well, not my fault you can't search for the scroll I handed to you brats." He shrugged, of course an excuse… he wanted to come and see you. "Hello, Y/N san!" He chirped excitedly, and you waved him a Hello right back; gulping. "How have you been?" Satoru asked again, you nodded with a half-smile. "I'm good, Gojo San, are you good, too?" "No, I'm not… and you know why." His tone was soft, tender, as if he didn't want the pressure of his words to get to you.
"I- I see…" You looked down at your feet, looking back up at him. "You said you'll work late today." He almost whispered, shit- you completely forgot about that excuse you made for him,
"Oh yeah- ahem, well yeah… I will freshen up and login again." You grinned, trying to save your sorry ass.
"No" Satoru simply denied your statement.
"You are going to freshen up, and then utter why you're behaving this way." He didn't sound easy this time, you were hearing him speak to you sternly and seriously for the first time ever. You can't blame him though, he's worried… and it only warms your heart more that he is worried.
Before you could open your mouth, your brother came back to the drawing room. Stomping and giving him the damned scroll. Ugh- timing!
"Jaa- see you two!" He grinned, head-patting your brother and looking into your eyes.
Before you could say anything further, you found yourself back in your room. Answering his call…
"Are you getting out of the house or should I carry you out myself in front of your brother?" Satoru almost sung, and you knew there was a tad bit of a truth laced to that threat.
"I'm getting out." You rolled your eyes.
"Aw, that's a good girl."
The moment you were outside, Satoru teleported beside you, hand intertwining with yours and helping you walk in fucking air. You blinked, not registering how this is happening. It was like invisible stairs that take you to the breath-taking sky. Stars have just started to pop up as the night blanket wraps the city of Tokyo.
"What's bothering my baddie?" Satoru hums, and before you could answer, he interrupted again. "Don't say nothing else I'll start being really paranoid and restless, that's no good is it?" He coos, leaning in to make you feel more comfortable.
You finally decided to speak up, pouting and telling him everything about Mei Mei and what your brother told you. Then telling him how that made you feel truly.
He chuckles, rolling his eyes and cupping your face preciously. You blinked, taken aback by the sudden stance of affection but not leaning away. You wanted this… you wanted him to touch you, to soothe your worries away. "I can't believe my silly little girl would be so stressed about something like this It's nothing. Even if Mei Mei flirted, I would never return her affections or anyone else's." He smiled, "You know why? Cause I really want no one else but you Little One. I would never lose this." His eyes observed you once more, hands squeezing your face tenderly. "For something meaningless… I would never do anything to risk this, never. I promise you."
His words echoed in your ears and you couldn't help but nod a little with a smile. "Sorry- I just, you know it's not been a lot of time to us and-"
"So what!" Satoru giggles, "Time is a construct, and definitely not a measuring parameter when you're dating someone like me. Or if I am dating someone as amazing and kind and yet, fierce and firm as you." He winked.
"I promise you sweet Princess, I would never, ever… let anyone near me." His sincerity touches your heart, and you leaned in, wrapping your arms around him in a tight hug.
"Aw! I get a hug! Good sign!" Satoru beams, kissing the crown of your head and rubbing your arms comfortingly.
"Let me show you now the skyline looks, neh?"

“Y/n!” You boss calls your name from a few cubicles down. You were new to Willams, having just moved from America and the Baseball industry into Motorsport.
“What’s up?” You ask, leaning against the frame of her cubicle.
“Erica is out sick, can you do her sponsorship activation in an hour?” She asks, looking a little frazzled, holding out a folder with some papers to you. You nod and take them, reading the summary sheets on your way to the car.
Your first assignment working with the drivers, thankfully you are used to ad shoots. They were relatively easy, taking pictures for the portfolio, schmoozing the sponsor, and helping marketing keep things in order.
“Coffee?” One of the sponsorship interns offers you, and you furrow your brow.
“Mark, that’s not in your job description, you don’t have to bring me coffee,” you take it anyway.
“BOGO deal. Figured you would like it since you weren’t planning on being here,”
“Favorite intern, right here. I’ll hook you up wherever you want to go after this,” you laugh, navigating through the site. Mark reads the briefs you brought along as you introduce yourself to the media team and the sponsors.
“Hi, I’m Logan,” One of the drivers introduces himself to you, his American accent making your ears perk up.
“Y/n, nice to meet you,” you extend your hand, your mother taught you manners.
“Georgia?” He shakes your hand, curious on placing the accent.
“North Carolina born and raised,” you smile, ignoring the pleasant warmth of his hand.
“Not many Americans around here. What do you do?” He asks. It’s a relief to you, everyone assumes that you are a sports journalist or work in marketing, but he had the decency to ask.
“Corporate partnerships. Getting the team money so you can race,” you explain briefly.
“That’s so cool, I wish I could ask more, but Albono is calling me over,” he waves goodbye.
“You’re in looooove,” Mark teases, standing beside you.
“Shut up. Offer rescinded,” you blush slightly as the blond driver glances back at you.
A few months later you are in America for the Miami GP. Williams did a competition with one of your accounts, so you flew in a week ahead to make sure everything was set, and the working remote was a plus. One day you took advantage of an old connection and got a free ticket to the Marlins game, and got to tag along with them as they worked. The real bonus was the better food and suites, but you didn’t expect to see a certain blond driver throwing the first pitch.
He wasn’t expecting to see you either. Ignoring the marketing intern, he jogs over to where you and your friend are talking.
“Logan! Hi,” You smile, quickly turning to introduce him to your friend, but Logan is one step ahead of you.
“You are here early,” he smiles back at you.
“My account is sponsoring a VIP trip to Miami contest for Williams, so I’m making sure everything is ready to go,” you explain and he nods.
“Have you seen your family?”
“Yeah, they flew down the other day, I got them grandstand tickets,”
“What are their names? I can get them a paddock pass for FP1 and FP2,” Logan says and the marketing intern looks antsy beside him.
“Here’s my number, text me,” you hand him your business card and apologetically smile at the intern.

For some reason, it didn’t take a second thought to accept Logan’s invite. You had the day off tomorrow, your parents were busy, and there was really no reason not to. Your bag was packed and you were in Logan’s pickup truck before you knew it. The radio is on the top 100 station, and the windows rolled down slightly on the highway, the ocean air washing over you both.
“What do you miss most about America while in England?” Logan asks and you pause for a second.
“Peanut butter and jelly’s, they don’t taste the same. What about you?”
“That’s not what I miss most, but it’s a valid answer. I think I miss the Florida beaches, especially at dawn,” he says, letting a calm silence settle in.
“I would agree with that, but make it North Carolina,”
“Thanks for agreeing to come with me, the house feels so empty,” Logan looks at you. You nod, pushing some stray hairs out of your face.
“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be shown around by a local,” you grin, locking eyes briefly with him.
“I know this great place for dinner,” he says as he turns off the highway. You learned about him on the drive, including that he owns a beach house and doesn’t live with his parents.
You both walk into the small restaurant, his hand instinctually going to yours before he quickly stops before you notice. You don’t see the way his heart races when you smile at him. You don’t realize that he’s noticed you around the track and sponsorship events, and how he finally built up the courage to introduce himself. He is so excited to take you to a restaurant that specializes in southern comfort food.
“Logan, you didn’t,” you gasp as you look over the menu, your heart swelling.
“I thought you probably missed a taste of home,” he smiles sheepishly.
“You are the best,” you quickly decide on your childhood favorite. The both of you get to know each other more over the meal and flirt a bit while you’re at it.
“I forgot how good that restaurant is,” Logan says as you both walk out of the restaurant, his arm gently going around your shoulder. You blush, but make no attempt to move it. The ride to his house is short.
“Get changed, Logan, we are going for a beach walk,” you tell him after he shows you the guest room. No more than five minutes later, you are both barefoot on the beach, you in a Williams hoodie and shorts, Logan in an unbuttoned shirt and shorts.
You don’t really know when your hands first brushed and connected, but you didn’t attempt to stop it. Logan admired you against the moonlight and soft crashing waves.
“Lo?” you ask as he seems elsewhere.
“Can I kiss you?” he asks softly, turning towards you. All you do is nod, his soft lips brushing against yours as you pull him closer, properly kissing him.
“Wow,” you breathe, a blush covering both of your cheeks.
“I guess I’m not immune to your southern charm,” he teases, causing you to giggle.
“I guess not,” you agree. The walk back to the house is comfortable, and he kisses you goodnight outside your bedroom door. You wake up early for a run, quietly heading downstairs only to find a shirtless Logan doing the same thing.
“Morning run?” He asks with a smile.
“Yeah, you too?” You ask back and he nods. You both finish tying your sneakers and put on headphones. He leads your morning run, knowing the streets better than you. You both stop into a coffee shop a few blocks away for breakfast before heading home.
“I’m gonna shower then head out to the beach if you want to join me later,” Logan tells you before heading to his room. Once you finish your coffee, you do the same. There are two towels out on the beach in front of Logan’s house, Logan occupying one. After grabbing your book and applying sunscreen, you join him.
“Blue is a good color on you,” he compliments your light blue bikini.
“What are you reading?” You ask him as you lay down.
“The Great Gatsby,” he observes your book cover.
“Good choice,” you hum as you get immersed in the book. Fifteen minutes later, you see Logan set his book down out of the corner of your eye. He rolls over and you quickly bookmark your book.
“Do you know how hard it is to read while next the a beautiful woman?” Logan asks and your lips quirk up into a smile.
“How hard?” you ask, smiling as he pulls you closer to him, happily kissing you.

“Logan, look at this,” you show him your phone, as you lean over the kitchen island. He sets down his water bottle and takes a closer look.
“I’m surprised they even care about me,” he says, brushing it off. There is a public beach a few houses down, so it isn’t uncommon for someone to stray off it.
“I didn’t think about what would happen within Williams,” you sit on one of the stools. Logan moves to sit beside you, grabbing your hand.
“It’s fine, we can fill out the necessary paperwork. There isn’t a conflict of interest, we are in the same department, it will be okay,” he reassures you. You peck his lips and sigh.
“I’m sorry someone saw us, that makes it harder for you,” you frown. His hand moves up to your cheek, rubbing soft circles with his thumb.
“I’m not. I’m happy to be seen with you,” he smiles before going to start lunch.
“I’m glad I met you,” you tell him, happy to be with someone who isn’t afraid to be in public.
“Me too. Would it be too early to call you my girlfriend?” Logan asks, finishing the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches you both have been craving.
“Normally yes, but with you, I would be more than happy to be your girlfriend,” you squeeze his hand. Logan kisses you briefly before starting to eat.
A few hours you make your way back to Miami, Logan having a team meeting that evening. The two of you didn’t see each other much the rest of the week until free practice.
You lead your parents into the Paddock area, taking them to Williams hospitality. You had told them about Logan and they were very excited to potentially meet the driver.

“Hi Babe,” Logan hugs you when he enters hospitality, stopping to say hi before grabbing coffee.
“Hi Lo, ready to meet the parents?” You ask nervously, he kisses your forehead. The rest of the weekend flies by, he charms your parents, you meet his parents, and before you know it you are in England again.
By the time Austin rolls around, you both are inseparable. The team finds it cute how Logan will follow you around like a puppy dog when you are at the GPs and he is free.
“I’m so glad I saw you at the Marlins game,” Logan whispers, his arms wrapped around you.
“I love you,” you whisper back, tilting your head to kiss you.
“I love you too,”

When you got paired up with your workplace's assigned asshole, you were more than concerned for your career than ever. 
Miguel wasn't easy from the start. Arguments were one after the other, followed by complete silence in the lab due to the inability of either of you to take accountability. You had never really heard him talk or engage in conversation properly unless it was to scold or correct you for making, according to him, a quintillion mistakes. 
It stretched you thin, you were close to asking the higher-ups to give you another partner, but you knew that they would ignore your protests so you put up with it. Besides, talking smack with your friends outside of work helped. Though, you knew that they were getting a little tired from it as well. 
After a particularly harsh argument with him, you couldn't retaliate with anything witty to say. You sulked in your own corner of the laboratory for a while, until Miguel silently placed a small, steaming hot cup of coffee on your desk. 
That moment had triggered the beginning of your actual relationship. Sometimes, the room would still be strung tight with tension, but it was better than awkwardly hanging around each other and waiting for yet another fight to start. It slowly turned into Miguel giving you rides home, Miguel buying more than just coffee for you, and Miguel staying at your place after he dropped you off.
Then he quit. 
Or did he get fired? Liberated, in corporate terms. You didn't know the full story, you got a new lab partner one day, Miguel was gone, there was no coffee on your desk anymore. There was no comfortable silence. 
It was difficult to get a hold on him with the moments that followed, you knew well that he had a tendency to brood, but never for this long. He didn't leave you on read, your messages weren't even going through. You searched his name up on social media and found nothing, a thousand other Miguels but not your Miguel. You reached out to his brother after a lot of thinking, but he couldn't come up with an answer either because his family didn't know where he went either. 
Perhaps it shouldn't have upset you as much as it should have, Alchemax viewed their employees as expendable toys. You didn't mean to get attached to him, but you had breached that line very long ago ever since the first shouting match. He was your friend now, no corporation was going to get between at least trying to talk again. 
When you had gotten a message from an unknown number, there were only two possible answers. A telemarketer or Miguel. Likely possibilities, a fifty percent chance for either. You thanked God that it was the latter. 
The power that was held in that conversation had changed the trajectory of your life forever. Miguel helped arrange a time for you to meet, the second you caught sight of him, it erupted a feeling in you that you just couldn't bring yourself to describe. 
He still looked like him, but otherwise different. His face looked more sunken in, eyebags, lines you hadn't seen on his face before. He was definitely taller, his physique was more built as well. What caught your attention the most though was his eyes, crimson red and deliberately drained of light. 
Miguel, what happened to you?
It was a long, overly extensive talk. You shouldn't have broken down over it, the events that lead up to his timely demise at his job. It wasn't your place to cry over his misfortunes, but he looked like he didn't have it left in him to cry so you took that place for him. Alchemax was your breeding ground for innovation and evolution of human society, a little shady around the edges, but you knew that you'd still be helping people in the end. After this, your hopes in that place had been quashed. Clearly if they were heartless enough to treat one of their top geneticists like this, they wouldn't be any better towards the safety and care of the populus. 
So you quit your job immediately. Miguel invited you to Spider Society and you gladly agreed, you were in no position to really decline. Besides, it was a good way to get you back on your feet again. You had become acquainted with the people that passed by in what used to be headquarters back then, Miguel trusted them with his life it seemed (despite him not being able to admit that himself though).
You'd find yourself in HQ more than in your own apartment at that point, you enjoyed being there. You had closer friends, Spider-People were better company than mad scientists anyway. You helped Miguel make this new, exciting thing from foundation to the top. It helped you become more social, it made you more comfortable opening up to people again. 
You just didn't know that it was doing quite the opposite with Miguel. 
You had blamed yourself for not noticing sooner, for not picking up the details that he wasn't doing as fine as he thought he was. When you found the doors to his office locked, you already felt your heart begin to race. You called out to Lyla and she was more than willing to answer back, "He's going through something, he hasn't really been taking his Rapture doses recently and-"
"Let me handle it," you said, firmly. "I can help him. I can fix it." 
Lyla looked at you, just looked. She didn't feel, she wasn't supposed to feel exactly. She could act like it, her programming allowed her that at least. She made perfectly calculated decisions and perfectly calculated reactions to them, when she noticed a problem, she was supposed to fix it. 
You weren't as accustomed to Lyla as other people, but you were aware of that as well. In spite of that, she still managed to be the light in conversations most of the time. Literally, when it was the dead of night, just you and Miguel strewing and caking together more reports, she'd find ways to make it more entertaining. 
That means if Lyla looked at you like she did, with so much uncertainty and inner conflict. It was like her code turned to beat like a human heart, you could hear it in the swift moment of silent she'd left you in. The hiss and whir to Miguel's office doors reeled you back in, Lyla sighed. She shouldn't sigh, she never sighed. 
"Do the right thing," she wished you off. God, I hope so, you thought to yourself. 
It was dark, obviously. You were used to it, ever since Miguel told you about how sensitive his senses can get, you didn't really mind at all. There was still light that peeked from the corners, a small monitor here and there, maybe a secret window you just didn't know about. It was cozy sometimes even to evade the blinding sunlight and stay in the darkness with Miguel. But that's not at all what it felt like when you entered. It did not embrace you, it suffocated you.
There was no accompanied noise either, no beeping from a monitor, no whirring of a machine, and no idle chatter with him and Lyla like there would always be. It was the purest form of silence, the sound of your breathing and the small pats of your shoes against the cold, metal ground was all you could hear. 
Miguel's platform was placed high up, there was absolutely no way that you could get to him without using a web shooter. Unless you could somehow convince him to lower his platform, which you really didn't want to do in the case you might accidentally say something stupid. 
"Miguel?" You yelled, stupidly. Though, it would be more stupid to try and propel yourself up to the height of his platform. One option results in humiliation until the end of your life while the other option could result in the end of your life. You weren't really looking forward to experiencing the latter.
You thought you heard him mumble something, but before you could call out his name again, he answered back. "Get out." 
The absence of cruelty in his tone was prominent to you already. He didn't have the heart to speak so coldly to you in the first place. No, he sounded scared, fearful, whether it was of you or himself, you were yet to find out the reason why. The priority right now was to talk to him, properly.
"Are you sure about that? I have a, uh, really important work file that I need you to review! The multiverse is at stake here, Miguel. Come on!"
Silence. For a few seconds. Before you heard the unmistakable click and whir of his platform, it makes its slow descent down towards you. Miguel begun to enter your vision, he had a chair pulled up and he was hunched over on his desk. Rare, you knew he liked to work when standing (oddly enough). 
"You're a bad liar," he grumbled, not even facing you as he said it. You sighed as you stepped onto the platform, placing your hands on your hips. 
"I wasn't lying, but your doors were locked and Lyla told me that there was something going on here." Miguel mumbled something else under his breath that you couldn't catch, he simply goes back to what to whatever he's doing. Which you really couldn't allow, but you couldn't push yourself into this. With him, there was always some sort of process. 
You took the moment to observe your surroundings, it was unbearably messy in here. A feat that he'd somehow been able to achieve despite being way past the age of papers, there was clutter everywhere. From beakers, liquids of mysterious origin pooled around from here to there, and even... Blood?! 
Your attention had snapped back to Miguel and that's when you had started to notice, how his shoulders rose and fell faster than usual, his hands ruffled in his hair, the rapid successions of his breath. 
"Miguel," Shock the process. Shock waiting. He clearly wasn't okay, you knew that to the fullest now. In three short strides, you were already by his side. "What's going on?"
He shook his head. Okay, you didn't want to press him too hard into talking, but this wasn't something that you could leave alone. Hesitantly, you placed a hand on one of his shoulders. He flinched, so did you, but right now, you needed to be the strongest person in the room so you kept your hand there. 
You tilted your head to the side, just so you could see his face, but he avoided your gaze. What entered your sights however was a discarded needle gun, yet to be picked up, and a few claw marks on the table. 
So this was the Rapture that Lyla was talking about. You hadn't a single clue what it was when she mentioned it, you pretended because you thought that she'd lock you out if you hadn't. Even then, there isn't much you could deduce aside from the fact that it was a drug Miguel had to take. You heard very little about the Rapture studies back in Alchemax, it was very classified, and you wish you would have pried more. 
"Do you need help with that?" You asked, trying to keep your voice as level as possible. Your thumb drew small circles into the muscle of his shoulder, his hands fell from his hair to his sides. He slumped back against his chair with a big sigh, and he nodded. 
Shakily, you picked up the gun. There was no seat for you to take, so you decided on sitting on the table. When you leaned down, the nanofabric of Miguel's suit had dissipated, revealing the fullness of his arm to you. You attempted to steady your hands over the exposed skin, Miguel doesn't even wince as the little needles pierce through. 
It will probably take a little while for the vial to empty out. You stewed in the silence with Miguel for a while, you'd usually use this as an opportunity to make conversation, but judging from his current state, he probably isn't one for talking. 
You released the breath that you were holding in when it was finished, you set the device for the side. Your hand remained on Miguel's shoulder the whole time and it tightened as you asked, "Is there–"
"No. No, I'm sorry. I'm just-" Miguel took a deep breath. "I'm- not ready to talk about it right now. It's a lot, sorry for bothering you."
He still wouldn't look you in the eye, you looked down to his hands and saw him tugging and pinching at the fabric of his suit. He'd calmed down a little now at least, but still. You couldn't help but feel like you've failed somehow, you tried to put on what's supposed to resemble a smile to him. "Okay, that's fine." 
When he dismissed you and let you (told you) to leave him alone, you promised yourself that you'd wait. You'd wait for him to be ready.
But maybe he never will.

Memo to self
[some spoiler from Network Effect and Systems Collapse]
ART is considered as an individual and second-in-command of missions after Seth, and also has the same title and position both in the teaching faculty and the freeing-former-corporate-colonies side business as Iris, though most of the students and lower-level personnel it interacts with don't know what its full capacity is.

So, with only small number of upper-level university personnel knows about what Perihelion is capable of. That means, its crew is very special, carefully selected. After re-reading both books, I am still confused about them, though. Some of them only get mentioned briefly. So, I made a summary for myself. Please correct me if I am wrong:
Seth (he)
 Captain of the Perihelion. He is Iris’s father with Martyn. When he meets Murderbot for the first time on the planet of lost colony, he is sceptical. But once he understands that Murderbot is indeed Peri’s friend, he relaxes. He is tall, has very dark skin, with less hair than most SecUnits. When Murderbot was captured by the infected colonists, he tries to stay behind to save it, despite severe injury. He seems to like high-carb protein diet, and ART threatens him to inform Martyn and iris about it. He initially objected to Tarik being assigned to Perihelion, owing to his past working for Corporates. He seems very mild mannered and does not come across as the leader of anti-corporate missions.
Martyn (he)
Probably a bio expert. One of Iris’s fathers. He has lighter skin, with short white hair. He asks, “How many SecUnit friends does Peri have?” to which Iris says, “No, Dad, this is the SecUnit Peri told us about, the one it was going to bomb the colony over.” Martyn told Murderbot about ART’s creative accounting. He also told it that Iris and ART had been interacting since they were both babies. ART, Murderbot, Martyn and Matteo came up with full containment protocol. Towards the end of Systems Collapse, he was in a second team in negotiations with the separatists with Iris and Kaede.
Iris (she)
  Daughter of Seth and Martyn. She has augments for extra feed connectivity and storage, but nothing for vision. Dark brown skin, and wears a woven bracelet. She has curly puff of hair tied up in a headband/scarf thing. Smaller and slimmer than Ratthi, but not much bigger than Amena. She grew up with Perihelion since she was a newborn baby, and Perihelion was also newborn AI. Murderbot realises that Iris is ART’s Ratthi (its best ally). She shows leadership qualities, being able to keep her cool in difficult situations. She has the same title and position in the teaching faculty in PSUMNT as ART.
Kaede (she)
  She is about the same size as Iris, but her skin is lighter, and her hair is yellow. She says, “Peri has a very dry sense of humour.” When Murderbot was rescued, Kaede suggests that they should put together a run box so that they can isolate the contaminated to code to delete. She also helped (with Thiago and Ratthi) in rebuilding the organic components in Murderbot’s back. She was also going over the scans of what little was left of the alien remnant from ART’s drive. Thus, she may have studied biochemistry and neurology. She seems to take things in her stride. When Ratthi and Tarik were having sexual discussions, she was just reading her feed, eating snack, and states, “I’m not getting involved in that, either.”.
Karime (she)
  In Network Effect, Pin-Lee was consulting with Karime and Iris about documents to dispute Barish-Estranza’s claim on the colony. She is the primary negotiator on ART’s crew. She is older than Mensah, according to ART’s personnel file. Calm and non-threatening. She has marital partners back at the university’s primary site.
Matteo (they)
  About the same size as Iris and Kaede, and has lots of dark hair in braids. They says “And we don’t like Barish-Estranza,” to the PreAux people. They was also going over the scans of what little was left of the alien remnant from ART’s drive with Kaede and Tarik. They could be a bio-medical expert. Worked with Arada on medical upgrades.
Turi (they)
  About as young as Amena. ART yells as Turi to put their laundry in the recycler when Mensah was about to board. Turi is in charge of ART’s accounting, and has to keep a hardcopy ledger because otherwise ART would alter their data. So, accounting might be their field of expertise. If Turi is allowed to do accounting for ART, and is let in on the BIG secret about special AI bots, Murderbot could be mistaken about their age. Unless Turi is a genius, skipped many years and finished higher education early.
Tarik (he)
  When Murderbot tells Seth, Iris, Kaede, Matteo, and Tarik that it called Perihelion ART, standing for Asshole Research Transport, Tarik says, “You definitely know the real Peri.” He used to be in a corporate combat squad, and forced to kill. He hates corporates. He also has a security speciality. He was new and had been with the crew for the previous 387 corporate standard day cycles. He is on board ART as a mission specialist, as he has a good knowledge of the tactics that corporates employ.

In the wake of the George Floyd protests, tech companies promised to hire more minorities. One company that claims to help them do it is Gem, and although you might not have heard of it, you’ve probably heard of some of its 1,200-plus clients: Reddit, Dropbox, Robinhood, Discord, Zillow, Stripe, Affirm, and Grammarly, just to name a few. Although Gem’s software is primarily used for things like non-race- and gender-based recruiting, payroll, and benefits management, John, (not his real name) — who worked for Gem as a sales development representative through a B2B outsourcing firm from March to July of 2021, told us that the prospective corporate clients he talked to were most interested in Gem’s “diversity enhancing” capabilities. Essentially, they had race- and gender-based hiring quotas and wanted to use Gem’s software to meet them. He said one prospective client, an executive at the Bay Area-based AI and robotics research arm of one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, told him explicitly: “I need more black candidates this month.”
According to its website, Gem’s software allows recruiters to track “gender and race/ethnicity throughout the entire hiring funnel.” Essentially, it appears to include a comprehensive race and gender tracking system designed to help companies fill race- and gender-based quotas with precision. For example, in a 2021 diversity webinar posted on YouTube, a Gem employee seemed to explain how the software could show how many candidates a company would need to reach out to if it had three engineering positions open, but didn’t want to hire men for them (in her words: “wanted to give women a chance”). In the same video, she demonstrated how to break down each stage in the hiring funnel by race, and explained (but did not show, probably for privacy reasons) how companies could further track how their recruiters’ own efforts break down along the lines of the company’s race- and gender-based hiring quotas, so that the company may “hold them accountable.”

All this requires a lot of data. According to a recent LinkedIn post by Gem founder Steve Bartel, this data can come from three sources:
Self-ID: the demographic data collection on job applications
Manual override: the recruiter reports your race and gender based on visual cues such as your LinkedIn profile picture
Predicted: Gem’s proprietary AI determines a candidate's race and gender based on machine learning (Bartel notes this is only for aggregate/anonymized use, meaning that the UI doesn’t allow recruiters to see which race was assigned to individual candidates)
John told me that, of Gem’s features, its race- and gender-identifying AI was the biggest selling point. “A key part of the pitch was to tell clients that Gem uses AI and machine learning to determine race and gender.” (This is especially ironic, given the panic about “racist AI” that has consumed every discussion about artificial intelligence for years.)
“One thing that cracked me up was that recruiting/DEI buyers at companies would ask, ‘Is this legal?’” John told me. “Not because they were offended by how obviously racist the software was — they loved what they saw. The concern was pushback from their legal team.” He said this question was asked so frequently that Gem’s Chief Legal Counsel had a prewritten response to the question that would be passed along to clients who asked.

The "Diversity Recruiting" section of Gem’s website offers a slate of what it calls “Case Studies” — essentially customer testimonials — where companies explain how they used Gem to hire based on race and gender.
In a case study for payroll firm Gusto, Gem seems to indicate the company used its “Candidate Rediscovery” tool to hire based on candidates’ race and gender. In Gem’s language, Gusto used the tool to “unearth talent who is vetted — and diverse — ultimately reducing time-to-hire.” In other words, companies could use Gem’s software to find people with specific racial and gender-based characteristics that meet the position’s requirements and hire them quickly, while weeding out similarly qualified candidates who are, presumably, white or male or both.
In a case study about the telecommunications company Twilio, Gem seems to describe how one of its senior recruiters was able to avoid hiring men with their tool:
Gem’s metrics have also helped [the recruiter] zero in on stages in the interview process where the team is falling short on equitable gender hiring. “For one division, we intuited that we were hiring more women than the average team—and we were! We were prepared to roll off our passive sourcing efforts for that division, but I don’t like to make a move without looking at all the data first. That’s where Gem came through.” [The recruiter] dug through the data in more detail and discovered that the proportion of male candidates was actually increasing quarter over quarter—so much so that, by Q3, they would have made significantly more male than female hires. “If we hadn’t had access to that data, we wouldn’t have been able to identify that trend and strategize on how to allocate our resources properly.”
This is easily interpretable as: We thought everything was fine until Gem showed us that by Q3 we might hire a disproportionate number of men in a division that a disproportionate number of men applied to work in. It's worth noting that when announcing massive job cuts in 2022, Twilio’s CEO bragged that the layoffs had been carried out through an “Anti-Racist/Anti-Oppression lens.”
In another testimonial from Chili Piper, an inbound conversion platform for B2B revenue teams, the company’s Talent Ops Manager says she used Gem to discover that URG (under-represented group) candidates were dropping off after the company stopped including a video submission in the application (itself seeming to indicate that a significant proportion “URGs” were being advanced through the hiring pipeline because of their race or gender). She successfully lobbied to bring the video submission back and modified the assignment. “Now it’s like, sell us a new smartphone: something that really levels the playing field and lets us see candidates’ creativity, communication, and approach in action. It’s not necessarily entrenched in experience in tech and SaaS sales.” Since then, the company has “seen a decisive shift in the demographics of candidates who make it to the interview stage of our process. We have seen a 54% increase in URG candidates and a 31% increase in female-identified candidates making it to the first round of interviews. Offers extended to, and offers accepted by URGs have increased.”
In other words, Chili Piper's testimonial seems to indicate that Gem showed the company that when it stopped asking applicants to submit a video that allowed them to see their race and gender, they stopped hiring more minorities. So they brought video back, and seemed to effectively lower their standards by changing the assignment to one in which industry experience was deprioritized.
Gem’s own hiring practices also raise red flags. An internal jobs board from June 2021 provided to Pirate Wires shows that under a field titled “Diversity Search,” positions are either listed as “Open,” “Women,” “URM,” or “Women & URM,” suggesting that certain positions were closed off to straight white males, or perhaps that women and minorities were being sought after in those positions. We sent the screenshot of the internal job board — with company name and other identifying information redacted — to a tech industry employment lawyer, who said:
Without knowing more about the company or getting clarification on what some of the designations mean on the chart, it looks a bit problematic. The law allows companies to set “targets” and “goals” as they relate to the hiring, retention, and promotion of women, veterans, and underrepresented minorities (those targets/goals must be temporary). But the law does not currently allow private companies to set aside or otherwise designate specific positions for such group members. There are some grey areas for certain types of federal contractors, but it’s the exception to the rule.

As a non-lawyer, I’ll not comment on the legality of Gem’s hiring practices. However, I will say the company seems to use unorthodox recruiting methods. In Gem’s diversity webinar I referred to earlier, one of the hosts said, “Here at Gem, each time we open a new req [position], we actually focus solely on sourcing URGs, and in conjunction [with that] we don’t post the job on the career site until other levers need to be pulled…”
The host then explained how she found candidates of specific races and genders at Gem, telling the audience: “Sourcing for URGs may require you to shift some fundamental ideas you have about what a quote-unquote good candidate looks like.” Next, she described how she would go through LinkedIn, searching for candidates with stereotypically minority names, who use neo-pronouns, or who went to minority-majority schools, among other tactics.

When asked for comment, a representative from GEM told us “Our product provides interested customers with insights that help them build a diverse talent pipeline. We work closely with legal counsel to ensure our platform complies with all applicable laws and welcome potential customers looking to learn more to reach out to us."
Gem: a company that apparently doesn’t post some job announcements publicly without searching for specific races and genders on LinkedIn first. A company whose value proposition is to help companies hold their recruiters “accountable” for hiring too many of the wrong race and gender. A company that created an AI that predicts your race and gender. A company whose AI tracks race throughout the hiring pipeline so efficiently that, allegedly, even woke companies question its legality during sales calls. Gem is the company that vast swaths of the tech industry are using to hire.
So if you’re in the business, and you’re a Derrick O’Donnell or a John Chau, good luck out there. I think you’re gonna need it.

Algorithm is not a bad word
Named for Arabic mathematician al-Khwarizmi and partially formalized by queer mathematician Alan Turing, algorithms are simply a process for doing things, potentially with a desired result.
An early algorithm we learn in school is how to add two whole numbers together.  Using pencil and paper, you can probably figure out what 420 + 69 is.  In fact there are multiple ways.  You could draw out 420 dots, draw another 69 dots, and count how many there are in total.  Or you could lay them vertically, start at the ones column, and compute the digits of the sum.
Algorithms are not strictly related to numbers.  What if you’re a teacher and you want to sort homework assignments alphabetically by the students’ names?  Well you’ll probably have a process, which involves checking repeatedly if two pieces of homework are out of order (e.g. if you had homework from Bob then homework from Alice, you would swap the two since Alice is first alphabetically).
Another great non-numerical example of algorithms is solving the Rubik’s Cube and it’s larger variants.  In the cube solving community, there are algorithms for specific processes, such as rotating corners cubies or flipping edge cubies.  Some of these apply to the 3x3x3 cube, others can be generalized to help one solve a 69x69x69 cube.
Algorithms are also beautiful.  Visualizing how the data dances around can be incredible.  Check out this animation from Wikipedia showing the Heapsort algorithm in action:

This inspired the hell outta me when I first saw it in 2007.  That diagram a couple seconds in, where it just sounds like it’s emitting a thunky beep at ya before suddenly just putting everything together.  The way there’s sort of a pattern before it.  Just that sheer magic.
You can also make art out of algorithms.  From my username, one of my favorite categories is maze generation algorithms.  Think Labyrinth, whose algorithm page I just linked, was an early website I found on the Internet, and I’m so happy it has survived the various eras of web evolution.  The Maze of Theseus in particular was a huge inspiration for me after printing it out in 2000 on a summer road trip.

Alas Think Labyrinth is from before the days of heavy animations on the Internet, so to visualize a maze algorithm I will instead link to Mike Bostock’s article on Visualizing Algorithms.  It includes many dynamic animations that are rendered in your browser, including the sorting algorithms and maze generation algorithms mentioned above, among many others.
So why the hate for algorithms?
On Tumblr in the past few days, and more generally social media in the past decade, we recently saw favoritism for sorting algorithms that allow us to view our feeds in chronological order.  Many claimed they were opposed to an algorithm that decided in a corporate-specific manner what we should see first.  Let me be clear:  the corporate ordering of a feed is bad, but it is not bad because it’s an algorithm.  It’s bad because it’s not one of the algorithms that users want for ordering their feed.
The other negative use case grew heavily in the past 15 years:  algorithms that are “trained” on biased and/or unethically obtained data.  We’ve seen many examples of systems that were trained on data sets of white college students such as facial recognition technology, which then later gets implemented at a large scale and fucks over people of color.  The past couple years we’ve seen a rise in creating data sets based on scraping millions of artists’ works without any permission from the artists themselves*.  Either of these applied to a corporate or government scale leads to active harm to populations already at risk and probably some new ones too.
Finally, we’ve seen a rise in computer automation for things that should be done by people.  I can’t find the specifics, but this quote is allegedly from a 1979 IBM presentation:
A computer can never be held accountable, therefore a computer must never make a management decision.
My first thought on where this comes up is applying for jobs.  Many companies will use a poorly thought out algorithm to filter through job applications, simply scanning for a couple key words they want (programmers who know Vulkan or Node.js) or more maliciously looking for words they don’t want (needing any kind of accommodation, sounding too anti-capitalist, etc).  These algorithms cannot be held accountable and should not be involved in any stage of the hiring process.
Quick aside:  When I was searching for the source of that quote about accountability, I typed in the first half in Google, and the autocomplete was

Some concluding thoughts
I like algorithms.  They are a passion of mine.  When people say algorithms are evil, I’m sad.  When people recognize the usage of certain algorithms in certain contexts are evil, I’m more happy (yet still disturbed these things happen).  I just really wanted to educate people on the usage of the word.
Also, algorithms are not about Al Gore’s dance moves.  Please stop with that stupid fucking joke.
*I mentioned scraping data from millions of images without permission of the creators.  My one iffy status with this is how sort of applies to the human brain doing a similar process over the span of one’s life.  What is it that separates my looking through a book of Escher’s works from a computer looking at it?
Obviously many things, but I’m horrendous as philosophy and ethics, so I’m just gonna stay in my comfort zone of pure algorithms and try not to get too involved.  Experts can figure out a more formal definition for what I can only describe as a gut feeling.

ukraine is rather quiet and tends to keep to herself most of the time. she was never one looking for trouble. however, she's also incredibly bitter and tends to have problems with jealousy. this formulated especially during world war two involving poland. it's one of the only times she's ever actively had a grudge against someone, and it'd been building up since the 20s after the polish-ukrainian war and poland promising to protect her. this obviously didn't go well, as during the polish-soviet war ukraine disappeared from their own plane and out into the real world (ooh i'll have to give context on that. basically in my hc theres a plane specifically for countries to live in and then theres our world. a free and sovereign country can travel between the two freely but annexed countries are limited to the real world. it's incredibly lonely out there considering they cannot talk to anyone other than other countries.). from there she just grew angrier and angrier at poland, viewing him as being let off the hook and undeserving of his freedom which eventually culminated in, uh, everything the upa did to polish people LOL.
after world war 2 the two didn't talk much. poland very specifically avoided areas where she thought she might've seen her (as well as her sister in all honesty. i hc ukraine and lithuania as good friends while under the ussr because they're both, uh, a little angry at poland during this time). during the time she spends alone and out there she grows into a very defiant person. she begins to learn to stand up for herself.
after the fall of the soviet union she gets on good terms with most of europe and begins to despise her brother (russiaaaa) post-georgia invasion. she forms a friend group with lithuania and poland (lublin triangle!) as well as georgia and moldova (association trio :3). to her friend's she's known as a very brave person who isn't afraid to stand for what she believes to be right. outsiders might view her initially as soft but that pretty much got thrown out the window with the whole "Russia invades ukraine" thing. it also helped her be "friends" with america. (america is very stocky and does not consider anyone to be his friend, only allies. he acts like an emotionless corporation twitter account tbf)
she enjoys crochet and hiking. she has chronic migranes and joint pains due to chernobyl. she is a girlboss

What are your thoughts on using game dialogue directly in fics? Trying to decide if I need to rewrite dialogue but it feels a little like cheating off a friend's assignment and trying to change the wording so the teacher won't notice

I steal an occasional line if I really like it. I don't feel bad about doing that cause none of this matters 😎
When reading fics, if I see a whole section of dialogue lifted exactly from the game, I scroll past it. If I have to do that often, I won't finish reading. The personal touches are the draw for me, but maybe others like to relive the game moments idk. There's no accounting for taste and we ain't getting paid so rip off media corporations to your hearts content.
Usually I just try to capture the essence of an exchange but I locate it more firmly in my context. Brief comparison from my longfic below the cut, in case it helps to see how the sausage is made

The first encounter with Martin is pretty memorable so I wanted to leave it mostly intact: namely, the "do you need a priest?" bit, the glimpse of a bitchy and sarcastic side, and his refusal to leave while people are still in danger.

In my context Martin is dealing directly with the injured with only Coradri for help. Tanis is physically exhausted and trying to get this over with. So the conversation gets heated fast and that changes the delivery of the lines. I spend more time on the emotional landscape and character establishment because that's the function of this scene.
Most of their conversation in this chapter can be mapped onto the original game dialogue. The phrasing and order is a little different but I frequently use parts of the original lines. I also ignored the divine plan line because it was important to me thematically, and I wanted to give the idea some breathing room in future chapters.
In short, I like to think about how I can put the existing dialogue to work for me, if I use it at all. I keep my own objectives in mind rather than the game's.

From Cubicle to Classroom: How I Found a Meaningful Job as a Corporate Dropout

“We would like to offer you an opportunity to join our team next fall”; I couldn’t believe the words I was hearing come through my phone as I did a Tiger Woods fist pump celebration on the University District’s “Ave” sidewalk. All my hard work, the late nights studying, managing the voice in my head that filled me with self-doubt, the rigor of college classes and the rejections from companies both prestigious and unextraordinary - the culmination of these things had fortunately and miraculously led me here, to receiving a job offer I had specifically been working towards for the prior two years. On the other line was the director of a department at a Big-4 accounting and consulting firm with which hundreds of other business students in multiple universities around the region had been trying to get their foot in the door. I was ecstatic. The call had interrupted my lunch with a staff member of the business school. I was telling her how maybe I wasn’t cut out for the job, and how the position would go to a hard-working individual who perhaps got higher grades than me, or had a more impressive internship than the one I had. “I’ll continue my job search with companies around the city, and I’m sure I’ll find something. There are plenty of opportunities in this town,” I said woefully but with an ounce of hope. I then felt my pocket vibrate and I eagerly excused myself from the table. 
I celebrated by enjoying the rest of our lunch, calling my parents (who were very happy and proud of me), and doing homework for other classes since this call came in November 2019 and I still had six months left of my senior year. As I was studying in the library, I ran into a fellow student who had received the offer before me and declined it since he felt it was “not a good fit.” Had he accepted the offer, I would have had to continue my job search. “Fair enough,” I said. “And thank you.” 
One year later, my assignment began. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, I was a yes man to everyone who worked there because that’s what the corporate culture, already hammered into me even before I graduated business school, had taught me; that’s how you climb the ladder the fastest. For the first six months I put my head down and focused intensely on my tasks and did the best that I could to produce a high-quality work product. I asked my colleagues how they had found success at the company, how they navigated challenges, and what they enjoyed about their job. I had monthly check-ins with most team members above me, and I even had a check-in with my peers who had started at the same time I had. I was really trying to shine - this is what I had been working towards for so long, and I was going to give it my all. 
As I entered the latter half of my first year of employment, I began to feel that I was in the wrong place, and I looked toward the future with a sense of gloom. My knowledge, skills, personality, and all of my hard work was going towards helping large corporations get bigger, stronger, and richer oftentimes to the detriment of smaller businesses. This was especially disturbing with the backdrop of the Covid pandemic; while many large corporations successfully pivoted and experienced high revenue, I witnessed small local businesses in my community struggle. And in some unfortunate cases, those small businesses had to close their doors for good. I attended firm-wide all hands meetings in which the CEO and President would talk about how “hard of a year” it had been, being cooped up in our homes and not seeing our loved ones. While I agreed with them that being away from family and friends is not ideal, it was hard to take their words seriously when some hard-working people with families were experiencing much worse, like losing their jobs, lives, businesses, savings, and good health. Us corporate soldiers were, and always have been and probably always will be, protected by the system. Work slowed briefly for my team, but within a few months our clients were back with hundreds of thousands of dollars to give us for auditing services; you can do that when you are a corporation with a market cap of half a trillion dollars and large cash reserves. Even if I had been laid off in the midst of the chaos, there are still plenty of doors for me to knock on with my degree, skills, references, and experience. That is why I dismissed the c-suite’s attempt at self-pitying, claiming that we and our clients were the ones experiencing hardship.
I got on virtual meetings with smart and accomplished people who instead of talking about how to unite the world and solve problems that impact people, were talking about the risks posed to them by their business partners. For context, my specific team dealt with assessing and mitigating risks for our clients and investigated whether our clients were being impacted by any action their business partners took that went against our clients’ interests. I witnessed hundreds of millions of dollars being moved around in this corporate ecosystem so that we could ensure that our client’s business was operating optimally. I had never worked with that degree of resources in my life. I had, however, worked with people who needed those resources for much better reasons. After two years, I turned off my computer for the last time out of refusal to participate in a process I had come to view as unnecessary. I quit the job I had worked toward for years in hopes of finding a career in which my skills were applied for a greater purpose.

I began to become fascinated by the idea of teaching at a community college during my first year attending one in 2014. I was intrigued by the idea of someone passionately and intentionally delivering their knowledge from their brain to an audience by executing a well-designed curriculum. I was fortunate enough to have several good professors throughout my time in higher education who I could speak to inside and outside the classroom and to whom I grew to respect. Initially, I imagined myself teaching business classes as a second career after a long and successful tenure in the corporate field. However, during a layover in Chicago on my way to my cousin’s wedding in upstate New York in August of 2023, I tested myself with calculus problems that I had not seen in eight years. I was enjoying myself - I find math fun. From the age of 13, I was excited by the number of applications for such a powerful system. I found myself pondering the careers in which one uses math frequently. One of the first jobs that popped into my mind was a math teacher. “Which level of math would I want to do all day?” I asked myself. I then thought about what it would be like if I taught high school mathematics and began to reminisce on times where I would be in geometry or algebra and feel my brain rewiring itself to fit in new rules and logic. I look back on those times fondly which is  largely thanks to my high school math teacher. I figured a good way to get into teaching would be to work as a substitute teacher; that way I could get a sense of which math level I enjoy the most and which age group with which I work well. When I got home from the beautiful wedding, I applied to a substitute teacher position posted by a local school district. At this time I had been working as a rideshare driver (and very briefly as a truck driver) for the past 10 months; I was ready to start intentionally carving a new career path. 
My first class was kindergarten at a neighborhood elementary school about a 10 minute drive away from my house. I arrived and checked in with the school secretary who politely showed me to my classroom for the day. On the teacher’s desk I found detailed sub plans and a class schedule. I had about 15 minutes to review these documents before the first bell rang. The kindergarten teacher next door, whom I will refer to as Mary, was experienced; she had been teaching kindergarten for 27 years. She was incredibly kind and helpful to me, someone who was working their first day in the field of education. 
Mary showed me to the doorway which led outside to the area where the students were lined up. Some looked excited with bright eyes and smiling faces. Some were upset to come to school and were letting their parents know by clutching onto their hands or waists, crying. I immediately appreciated the diversity of the class - it was a motley crue of children and I was standing there like a novice skier facing an oncoming avalanche. 
I was taken aback by the energy of the children - it was inspiring. Students were running around the room, wrestling with each other, talking to one another, and moving their bodies in however way that felt natural. As I looked around the room I saw writhing around the floor, jumping, kicking, and spinning; the form of movements were diverse and plenty. I tried to get the students to sit on the carpet so that I could begin working through the sub plans that had been so clearly laid out for me. However, trying to control the students or “manage” the classroom was pointless, as all of my attempts at doing so proved ineffectual and the students continued playing with each other. I began to sense that I was doing them a disservice by interrupting their play, as play is imperative for a child’s development. Mary poked her head into my classroom a few times to check in. She immediately began commanding the room and got the students to sit on the carpet using a strong and direct voice. Most of the students did as they were told and listened for a few seconds, then returned to playing once Mary left. I finally told myself that I must accept that that’s how my first day was going to go. I simply needed to make sure no one got hurt. The day ended with only one fall and one scratched face - not bad for a first day subbing kindergarten if I say so myself. If you disagree, I look forward to hearing about your time looking after 27 five-year-olds for six and a half hours. 
After more than a month of subbing every day at different schools in the district, I had honed in on elementary school, specifically. One school offered me the opportunity to come on as a long-term substitute to help with the computer lab rotations, recess duty, and the food pantry. Fortunately, the school extended my assignment by two months, so I’m currently getting the opportunity to connect with the students and staff in a meaningful way. I learn valuable lessons every day at school from both the excellent teachers and the students. From a professional point of view, the teachers provide tools I can store in my repertoire and utilize when I have my own classroom full time. From the students, I constantly see similarities between myself and them, and am able to relate to them through their curiosity, inquisitiveness, excitement, and goofiness. I am pleasantly reminded that we are all big kids at heart and that it’s okay to let our inner child or true self shine through. This creates a positive feedback loop where everyone in the school is encouraged to be themselves, which fosters an environment that is excellent for forming genuine connections, free of judgment, and a strong and healthy school community. It does not feel like work. In fact, there have been times where I am surprised I get paid to do what I do since I enjoy it so much. 
I often think back to my time at the consulting firm and contrast it to what I’m doing now at the elementary school. I feel a sense of joy, fulfillment, and reward in my current work, for which I am incredibly grateful. However, it’s not just the enjoyment that makes my work meaningful - it’s that I feel that I have a responsibility to do what I do, and I believe that is a significant factor when it comes to finding a job you enjoy. The work at my consulting firm was not absolutely necessary - it was a service that companies chose to procure to help mitigate risks; they could forgo these services and continue business as usual if they wanted. Thinking about the work we do at the school, we would be doomed as a society if we chose not to educate the young minds in our communities. Because I am aware of the importance of motivating and teaching children about honesty, love, and having positive regard for one another (among many other life tools), I feel that I have a responsibility to do so. To clarify, if one is aware of a need and they have an opportunity to fulfill that need, I believe they have a responsibility to take that opportunity and make the world a better place, and they will be glad they did. That, I think, is one of the main reasons I find a sense of reward in my work. Each day is different, but every day we get an opportunity to inspire young minds to be the best version of themselves. Anyone who has been around children knows that they often engage in conflict with one another. This could be a result of someone cutting in line, calling them names - the scenarios are infinite. In a sense, this contention among the children is representative of the terror we see at a global level. As people who work with children, we have an opportunity and therefore a responsibility to teach them peace, love, and positivity (having unconditional positive regard for one another). I encourage the students to withhold judgment for other students, especially in times of contention, and teach them methods of self regulation like reflection, writing, breathing, and meditation.
I spent the several years leading up to my first job after graduation chasing money and success in the traditional sense, and a great deal of people would be satisfied with the job I had. However, I didn’t feel successful emotionally or spiritually, and I am incredibly grateful I made a career transition, even to a field in which I had no experience - only a mission to try to have a positive impact on my community. I would encourage those who are feeling lost to meditate on things they feel must be accomplished to create a better world. If you make a difference every day towards something you care about, you are going to be much more excited to get out of bed in the morning.

Jimin and Jungkook of the group BTS enlisted together as active-duty soldiers in the army today (12th). The two entered the frontline Army 5th Infantry Division recruit training center (Key Recruit Training Center).

Companion enlistment is a system in which a close friend, brother, relative, or colleague enlists, undergoes training together, and is assigned to a unit in the same living area, allowing them to serve until they are discharged. It was designed to help people quickly adapt to military life and to increase their motivation to serve.

“Three weeks after Roosevelt created the Coordinator of Information, an innocuous notice appeared in the Federal Register announcing it. The COI, it said, would “collect and analyze all information and data which may bear upon the national security,” send it to the president and “such departments and officials as the president may determine,” and carry out “such supplementary activities as may facilitate the securing of information important for national security, not now available to the Government.”
With that, the United States established its first full-fledged intelligence agency by presidential decree.
When Japanese bombers attacked the American base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Americans instantly ceased to debate whether their country should enter the war. Whatever sense of security they felt had been shattered. In Washington, shock over the attack quickly gave way to a realization that it had been the result of a profound intelligence failure. Congress and the executive branch rushed to give the COI whatever support it needed.
Part of what it needed was the skill and experience of Allen Dulles. A few weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Donovan approached him through a mutual friend, David Bruce. It was the call for which Allen had been waiting. Bruce told him that Donovan needed a man for a job. He said nothing about the job, only that it required “absolute discretion, sobriety, devotion to duty, languages, and wide experience.” Allen accepted instantly.
Like many stories about Allen during these years, this one has come into question. By some accounts he was already working for Donovan at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. What is clear is that by early 1942, he had closed his Sullivan & Cromwell cases and taken over as chief of the COI station in New York. He leased a large suite of offices on the thirty-sixth floor of the International Building at Rockefeller Center and brought dozens, scores, and then hundreds of men and women to work there: lawyers, financiers, former diplomats, businessmen, and professors. Officially they were financial consultants. To friends they were allowed to say that they worked for a “research unit” related to the war effort, while stressing its “dull, statistical” nature.
New York was the logical first place, and Dulles was the logical guy because of his contacts,” one of Donovan’s aides later recalled. “He started bringing people in right away.”
Allen had two principal assignments. First was to lay the groundwork for an intelligence network that could penetrate Germany and the German-held regions of Europe, which meant finding and interviewing immigrants, Americans who had lived in those regions, and others who might have valuable memories or contacts. Second was an even wider-ranging effort to debrief everyone in New York, especially merchant seamen and newly arrived immigrants, who could give information—the more precise, the better—about European cities, ports, roads, rail lines, airports, factories, and military bases. Allen’s agents also swarmed over docks, sailors’ registry offices, and holding pens for “enemy aliens,” offering money for objects that immigrants might have considered worthless but that could be valuable to infiltrators. They bought old suits, neckties, overcoats, and shoes that could help agents blend in, and also identity cards, ration books, and other documents for forgers to use as models.
All manner of European exiles and refugees poured into the Rockefeller Center office; one, Heinrich Brüning, had been chancellor of Germany until 1932. The office swelled to fill four floors. When that proved insufficient, Allen rented eight more offices around the city, including one at 42 Broadway, near the docks. He quickly became fascinated with the possibilities for “direct action” operations in Europe, and established a front called the Mohawk Trading Corporation, through which he assembled an arsenal of sniper rifles, silencers, poison pills, and other tools of the black arts.
Allen had chosen his suite at Rockefeller Center in part because it adjoined one where another secret operation was under way, run by the legendary Sir William Stephenson, later revealed to be the spymaster Churchill called “Intrepid” and supposedly a model for Commander Fleming’s fictional agent 007. Churchill had sent Stephenson to New York in 1940 to gather intelligence and try to push the United States toward entering the war. He established himself in Suite 3603 of the International Building, where the sign on the door said “British Passport Control Office.” Britain was known as setting the gold standard in intelligence work, and Allen found in Stephenson a role model, inspiration, and guru.
“He had much to teach me,” Allen said later. “I picked his brains.”
On June 13, 1942, with the United States engaged in global war, Roosevelt signed an order transforming the Coordinator of Information from an intelligence-gathering agency into one authorized to conduct covert and paramilitary operations. There was no change in leadership, but a new name: the Office of Strategic Services. The OSS was authorized to do everything its predecessor had done and one thing more: “Plan and operate such services as may be directed by the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff.”
“With this, Donovan’s blueprint for the coordination of strategic intelligence collection with secret operations was realized,” Allen wrote later. “An intelligence agency had been created for the first time in the United States which brought together under one roof the work of intelligence collection and counterespionage, with the support of underground resistance activities, sabotage, and almost anything else in aid of our national effort that regular armed forces were not equipped to do.”
The OSS opened secret training camps for agents in Maryland and Virginia, and quickly ballooned to a staff of more than six hundred, most based in New York or Washington. Allen hired many of them. He described them as “military men and civilian leaders, teachers, bankers, lawyers, businessmen, librarians, writers, publishers, ballplayers, missionaries, reformed safe-crackers, bartenders, tugboat operators.… A bartender was hired not because he knew how to mix drinks but because he spoke perfect Italian and was at home in the mountain passes of the Apennines; a missionary because he knew the tribes and native dialects of Burma; an expert in engraving because his agents would need the most expert documentation to pass through enemy lines.”
That was a romanticized description of the men and women who joined the OSS. There were mud-on-the-shoes types, of course, but Allen and other recruiters for the OSS looked mostly to people like themselves, people they knew from prep school, college, the practice of corporate law or investment banking, clubs, vacation resorts, or the Council on Foreign Relations. The upper reaches of the OSS comprised what Drew Pearson called “one of the fanciest groups of dilettante diplomats, Wall Street bankers, and amateur detectives ever seen in Washington.” Many from this group would go on to help shape the United States in the second half of the twentieth century: Richard Helms, William Colby, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Walt Rostow, Stewart Alsop, C. Douglas Dillon, Arthur Goldberg, William Casey, Ralph Bunche, and a parade of unlikelier figures ranging from Sterling Hayden to Julia Child.
