So aparently the new meds I am taking have a sideeffect of demotivation and melancholy. I want to WANT to draw and write but there is only meh...

I managed to get Corona! The one time I would have had time to write something I got Corona and a Fever that cooked my brain. But, now my test is negative again and my brain is producing ideas like crazy!

You didn't know what to think when you saw his pain-filled expression on TV. You sat there, completely frozen, worry the only thing on your mind.
When you heard his sobs over the phone as he told you how bad it was, your heart shattered into a million pieces. That day made you realise that from that moment on, you had to be the strong one in this relationship.
It made you realise that he needed you to be the one he could lean on, the one Pablo could let his guard down, somebody that could be strong for him too. So he didn't have to be all the time.
You made it to your mission to do everything in your power to help him in any way possible. You rebuilt your living room into a bedroom, so he didn't have to go up any stairs. You held him day and night when the pain got too strong, and the only thing he could do was cry.
"Baby, I'm here ... I'm here for you. Let it all out I got you."
His grip on your hoddie was so hard that his knuckles turned white. You wrapped your arms around him like you wanted to protect him from everything terrible that this world threw at him.
Pablo felt safe in your arms. Your sent calmed him down. The warmth of your body engulfed him in a comforting manner.
He buried his face deeper into your neck as he felt his breath starting to slow down again.
"T-Thank you, I-I'm sorry. I don't know what happened."
You grabbed his head to make him look at you. You assured him, "Hey, it's completely ok to feel like shit sometimes. What you are going through is nothing easy. Sometimes you just have to let it all out."
Kissing his head, you stand up to grab something to eat for the two of you. Seeing that it was already 6 in the morning, you decided to start the day, knowing you two wouldn't fall asleep anymore.
Pablo kept lying on the couch. The pain in his knee was now only a dull ache. He sat up a bit to be able to see you rummaging through his kitchen drawers, trying to find something to eat.
An unconscious smile makes its way onto his face. He can't get his head around how you are willing to do all of this for him. Like he really doesn't know what he would do without you. You'd do everything for him, he doesn't even have to ask for it.
But it scared him that you wanted to help him so much. It frightened him that one day, you could wake up and realise how much work it was to be in a relationship with him. And that you would leave him because of that.
Realistically, something like that would never happen, but he was a chronicle overthinker, so let him be.
When you came back from the kitchen with two plates in your hand, you sensed something was bothering him, but you wanted him to tell you on his own.
You two ate your breakfast in silence, it was a weird kind of silence. You felt that Pablo wanted to tell you something the whole time, but nothing came. He just sat there and played around with his food.
"You not hungry?"
Looking like a child who got caught doing something stupid, he shakes his head and lowers his gaze again, not able to hold eye contact with you for so long.
Thinking he wouldn't say anything at all. You were about to say something when you heard him say. "How do you do it?"
Confused, you look at him. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, like ... like how do you keep up with me?"
Your confusion didn't get any better. You looked up from your plate and saw Pablo already staring at you, a curious yet slightly sad expression on his face.
Pablo noticed your confused expression and continued to talk.
" I mean, how can you keep up with literally having to be my server? You are cancelling your plans to stay home with me and do everything to keep me comfortable. You put my life before yours. Why do you do that? I-I don't understand. "
You loved him deeply and didn't see your efforts as a burden. It was natural for you to do what you could to help him. You couldn't enjoy yourself while he was suffering because it felt wrong to you.
Your silence made Pablo panic a bit, maybe he made you realise that you didn't want to live like that. What if you were actually sick of him needing care 24/7 now?
Your voice interrupted his inner monologue, " I have no clue, to be honest. It's just - the second I heard you were injured, I felt like I had to take care of you, to help you somehow."
You took a second to think of your following words. "When I heard you crying on the phone that day, I just felt the need to protect you, to take care of you. I know that you are a capable individual who can handle things on your own, but I want you to know that I love you with all my heart. When you care about someone deeply, it's natural to want to do everything in your power to ensure their well-being. So, even though I trust your abilities, I just want to remind you that I'm here for you if you ever need help or support. Your happiness and safety mean everything to me, and I'll always do my best to make sure you're feeling okay."
Hearing Pablo sniff made you stop your rambling and look at him.
"Dios mio, these medications make me emotional."
Pablo let out a wet chuckle as he wiped his tearing eyes with the sleeve of his hoodie.
You smiled at the boy before you and leaned down to place a kiss on his red nose. "I don't care, I love you one tear more or less isn't gonna change that."
"I love you too, so so much."

What were your thoughts on that theory that the Tridentarii were actually conjoined at birth?
Ianthe neglected to mention it when she was regaling the dinner party with the story of Corona's umbilical cord almost strangling her in the womb, but that doesn't mean it's not possible! I haven't heard this theory before, that's fun. Do you mean it as physical symbolism of their codependency, to go with having the same arithmonym?
I think if I were going to assign the Tridentarii another twin-related fetal health complication to make symbolism from, I'd give them TTTS. Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. It's when twins sharing a placenta have an imbalance in the blood exchanged; one twin sends more blood than it receives, and the other receives more blood than it sends. It's like that "one of them received more nutrients in the womb" meme, only with a net effect that's negative for everyone involved. Sooooo Third House chique.

Anyway Ianthe has absolutely been emotionally manipulating/abusing Coronabeth since they were children. Their whole dynamic seems to be Ianthe lording guilt and shame over Corona to control her. Corona almost killing Ianthe in the womb is something she is NEVER allowed to live down. In Nona, Ianthe has ascended to lyctorhood and she still brings it up.
When Gideon first sees the pair, she describes it looking like Corona had been sucking up Ianthe's life force. This is revealed to be true in a roundabout way as Ianthe has been pretending to be two necromancers because their father wanted a "matched set." While Corona does allude to her father's role in this dynamic, Ianthe seems to imply that she does it all for Coronabeth's sake. This dynamic that requires them to be constantly together also seems to have been used by Ianthe to deepen her enmeshment with Corona. How enmeshed Corona is (in GtN) is evidenced by a desire to be Ianthe's cavalier or to play a similar role in her life. The Cavalier/Necromancer relationship is established to be one of the most intimate between two people in the culture of the Houses. Scenes in GtN including when Naberius stops Corona from practicing with a rapier and then at the end when she laments that Ianthe ate Babs instead of her point to this desire to be Ianthe's 'cavalier.'
From GtN to NtN, Ianthe negs Corona at every opportunity, reminding her that she's stupid, overemotional, and hopeless without her. She nitpicks her appearance in particular, implying she looks awful when everyone else in the room is swooning (or at least our POV characters lol). Ianthe is awful to everyone, but there's something really pointed about her insults to Corona/Crown. Such cruel comments dressed up as casual terms of endearment. Something you can only accept as love when its all youve known.
Its understandable that Camilla doesnt trust that Crown wouldnt defect immediately upon meeting Ianthe. Camilla had seen first hand how attached the two were. But I think in seeing Crown work against Ianthe, and even using their old dynamic to manipulate her, we see that she's broken free of that toxic relationship. We dont know much about what happened between Corona and Judith while they were travelling during HtN, but we know that it taught Corona a love that didnt depend on her sister's disapproval, and that she has grown and changed because of it.

Sure the Third does magical plastic surgery all the time, but the implication is they do it on themselves. Being more or less emaciated isn't a direct sign of how powerful your aptitude is, so when Judith writes that Ianthe is probably the less talented twin, she means Corona was skilled enough to do *that* to herself and Ianthe wasn't strong enough to manage any body mods.
However, knowing what the real situation is, Ianthe almost certainly made Corona look the way she does. Ianthe is perfectly comfortable experimenting on her sister but would never alter herself. With all her negging in NTN I'd guess Ianthe pressured her into it too

Hi there 👋 I'm also here to ask more about the robot au. Does Donella know about Varian being Ulla's perfect robot? Or does Hugo tell her about Varian when he initially finds out? I'm curious as to whether Donella plans to take apart Varian to learn more of Ulla's secrets.
How does sleeping and eating work for Varian? Does rain or being immersed in water affect him? Does his energy come from magic or science? (Like is he solar powered, or is there a magic energy source keeping him working?)
What are Yong and Nuru's reactions to realizing Varian is a robot? After finding out he himself is a robot, does Varian ever try to communicate to other robots, even the rogue ones, to stop them or to test if they are as sentient as him? Are there other sentient robots besides Varian, or is he the most advanced? I imagine Varian not only dealing with an existential crisis but feeling out of place with both people and robots (not human enough to be human, but too advanced to be labeled another robot).
Also any other fun robot quirks of Varian?

currently i am Undecided on if donella knows what varian is. either way she would definitely find out, and i think it would probably be from hugo IF she doesnt know already. im actually going kind of insane about the idea that she wants to take him apart so i'll be real with you that is now part of this au. thank u. hugo would not know about this specific goal donella has
because he is meant to perfectly integrate with humans, most things are normal for him! his system, while synthetic, still works Mostly like a biological human. water doesnt really have an effect on him BUT i think he was programmed with a "fear" of cold weather to avoid being in the snow too much because it can damage him a little bit (excessive cold has a negative effect with his system)
his energy source is partially magic and partially science! the reason he is sentient is he does, truly, have a soul. this isnt really fully understood by him at first (and the source of much angst, naturally), but the reality is the magic that ulla harnessed was the ability to give him life. as for the rest of his energy- he's mostly solar powered! it helps that he lives in corona, the light kingdom. out on the road he's usually able to still stay energized- but i can imagine times where all energy sources are getting depleted and he acts a little loopy (its fun)
yong and nuru definitely are, well, shocked? like it is an insane thing for anyone to witness. but despite their confusion they definitely still care deeply for him. yong in particular is inquisitive about varian's robot-ness, i think that can get a little uncomfortable for varian sometimes but he knows he means well
i think the gang would at some point try and find ways to communicate with the other robots via varian! im unsure currently if that would ever be successful, but it would absolutely be something they'd try considering how varian's existence is basically the Key to a lot of this. that being said, while they probably dont know for sure, i can say that varian is the only sentient robot- unless you count what ulla did to herself (uploading her consciousness/soul basically lol. scary AI mode)
"not human enough to be human, but too advanced to be labeled another robot" obsessed with this btw. yeah..... You Get It. in general varian's character desperately trying to find his place is a super important element to me- so it manifests in the robot au like this exactly. but being with yong, nuru, and hugo eventually leads to him finding kinship with them. which, i think, is pretty similar to the regular version of vat7k (where he doesnt find himself within corona OR his mother's extended family- but instead with this group of weird nerds). varian might always struggle with his lack of human traits and his humanity that other robots dont have- but his friends and family, who are notably weird and unique in their own ways too, certainly help get rid of those bad feelings and reassure him
as for fun robot quirks... oh most definitely. remind me later (<- im telling myself this too) to talk about them bc i already made this way too long and listing off Fun Robot Quirks Of Varian is gonna make this even longer ksjdfhsd
here's one for now: when he gives hugs he can sometimes cause someone's hair to go puffed up from the static electricity. this also includes kisses but how will they Ever find that out :)

Disney comics tend to have negative continuity (I kid you not, when Don Rosa got Grandma Duck as the mother-in-law of Scrooge's sister and Donald's actual grandmother as per Barks' family tree it made HEADLINES in Italy, as local authors had her as Scrooge's sister and Donald's aunt for decades)... But there's three very interesting things authors around the world all agree about Donald Duck:
Donald is a crossdresser. Not in a creepy or weird way, he just likes pretty dresses and has absolutely no problem wearing one if it's the practical solution to a problem (he once borrowed Daisy's clothes and pretended to be her twin sister because the lady had too many obligations). If one takes the Paperinik stories into account it fits with his habit of disguising himself (it's also how Paperinik maintains his secret identity, after the many times Donald Duck "revealed" himself as Paperinik disguised as Donald they all assume Paperinik just wears a Donald mask under the domino mask), but the lack of issues in dressing as a woman and even pretending to be one is a nice touch.
Donald likes strong-willed and powerful women, as shown by all the love interests I know of: Daisy has a side job as a spy for Scrooge (and Donald KNOWS), has a powerful temper, and is one of four known people capable of matching Scrooge's insane work hours (the other three being his first secretary Emily Quackfaster, said secretary's niece and successor with the same name, and his butler Quackmore); Reginella is the queen of the planet Pacificus, chosen by her people for her charisma and skills as a ruler, and when it comes to defend her people summoning a furious Donald is HOLDING BACK (the moment she realized Donald couldn't solve the current emergency and used her full power was one of the scariest things ever put on a comic book, especially for how JARRING it was to have this kind woman do what she did); Xadhoom (from Paperinik New Adventures) was elected president of her homeworld of scientists at a rather young age because she was the smartest of them all, she missed the Evronian invasion allowed by the fact her intelligence didn't mean wisdom because she was off-planet with an experiment intended to solve her world's impending energy crisis, and when said experiment gave her godlike powers and she discovered what happened to her people she assumed the name of Xadhoom (meaning creditor, as the invaders owed her a debt of an entire sapient species) and started hunting down the Evronians with the explicit intention of committing a genocide, also stopping by to help those in need (how she met Donald, she knew some of her people would have tried to forewarn Earth of the Evronian threat, found the Evronians were already preparing an invasion but were wary of Earth's nuclear arsenal, and started culling the invasion force once in a while to prevent a full scale invasion while looking for their base); Lyla Lay (also from PKNA) is the droid assigned by the Time Police to surveil our time, and is one terrifying lady; Juniper Ducklair (from PKNA's sequel) was eventually elected queen of her homeworld of Corona (yes, Donald has three love interests that have been DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED rulers of entire planets) thanks to her sheer psychic might and the discipline she had to not brainwash anyone less powerful just by talking to them); and Kay K (from DoubleDuck) is one of the world's best spies, also skilled enough in martial arts she actually defeated Lyla in single combat (by throwing her off a roof, but she still managed to grab and throw her).
Donald is an amazing parental substitute to his three nephews. The original reason he even got to raise them was that the hellions had blown up their father and Della sent them to his house while the poor man recovered, and he, slowly but surely, turned them into good kids (though he had to fight quite the battles at time). Two alien tyrants once brainwashed them into their would-be successors, and Donald set up a revolution with the help of an Earth scientists who had been captured before him, physically destroyed the tyrants, and spanked the brainwashing away (it was a story from the 1970s). While hunting for a treasure with Jose Carioca and Panchito he was asked what he planned to do with his share, and he casually said he'd put it in their college fund (this casual admission is one of the reasons his two friends hold him in awe). And when the time-traveling bandit The Raider discovered his identity he was amazed at the kind of life and education he gave his nephews while also finding the time to fight crime and save the world and without doing anything unlawful or immoral to get the necessary money, something The Raider is uniquely qualified to judge due being a single father of one himself and his entire reason for still being a criminal being that it pays well enough to grant his son everything he needs to make himself a better life.
Curious that THIS, alongside his temper, is what everyone agrees on Donald's character...

The gravitational waves are produced by the planets motions energies- and not by the gravitational field- moreover- The sun is Not producing any gravitational field- I provide 2 major proves for this hypothesis which are- (1st proof/ Planet Motion Energy Analysis) and (2nd proof /The Sun Gravitational Field Refutation)
1st Proof / Planet Motion Energy Analysis Planet motion produces energy (1/2 mv^2), Let's ask, where's Planet motion energy? the planet can NOT store its motion energy inside its body because it would raise its temperature and No planet temperature is raised by its motion- logically- the planet motion energy is stored in the space in waves form- means- Planet motion energy creates waves in the space- the planet motion in the space is similar to a fish swimming in the sea- as the fish swimming creates waves in the water the planet motion energy creates waves in the space- let's see this picture clearly- the fish swims because it hits the water by its body and that creates waves in the water- we conclude, the water waves move by a velocity equal the fish velocity because of the reaction force- similar to that- Planet moves in the space and its motion energy creates waves in the space and these waves move by velocity equal the planet velocity- for example- Mercury (47.4 km/s) moves and its motion energy creates waves in the space and these waves move by equal velocity (47.4 km/s)- based on this idea- All planets move and their motions energies create waves in the space where each wave moves by velocity equal its planet velocity – AND I suppose these waves are the gravitational waves AND The planets revolve around the sun in the same one direction and for that their motions energies create waves in the space and these waves move perpendicular on the revolution direction (Toward Pluto orbit) AND In Pluto orbit these waves are unified together into one unified wave- this wave moves by a velocity = 205.8 km/s why? The 9 planets velocities total=176 km/s but I add the Earth moon velocity (29.8 km/s) that makes the total to be 205.8 km/s – I add the moon velocity because the energy is stored finally in the moon orbit- Note- the moon velocity is 27.8 km/s BUT the Earth and the moon revolve around the sun together for that the moon velocity should be considered equal the earth velocity relative to (the sun) – The 1st Proof Conclusion The Planet Motion Energy Creates Waves In The Space Means - The Space Must Have Moving Waves Now -the scientists had discovered waves in the space- And- they considered these waves are produced by The Sun Gravitational Field – BUT Why? The planet motion energy analysis proves the waves must be produced by the planets motions energies- Now let's refute the sun gravitational field theory- the refutation gives support for the conclusion that – the gravitational waves are produced by the planets motions energies and NOT by the gravitational field because there's NO Gravitational field.
2nd Proof / The Refutation Of The Sun Gravitational Field The Sun Doesn't Produce A Gravitational Field Nor Has Massive Gravity – let's prove that in following (1) The sun rotation period is (25.4 days– at equator) and (34.4 days – at pole) that shows the sun has no massive gravity nor even ordinary gravity equal any planet gravity otherwise the sun would rotate around its axis in one period of time- (2) No Planet Moves By The Sun Gravity – Newton is wrong- because- the planet moves by the force caused its creation- means- the planet creation and motion is done by one force only- because- if two forces have effects on the same one planet this planet would be broken- now- suppose the planet is created (by any force) and the sun gravity attracted this planet and forced it to revolve around the sun by the sun mass massive gravity (as Newton imagined) that would force the planet to move against its inner creation and will cause this planet to be broken- this is similar to a human is forced to walk on his hands in place of his legs and when this human refuses to do that (they told him we can force you by our power) for that this human walk on his hands forcedly and later this human is dead by this motion- shortly- the planet is NOT broken by its motion because the planet creation force is the force causes this planet motion- it's one force caused the planet creation and motion- Newton mistake is that he didn't know how the planet is created and by that he didn't realize that planet creation and motion are done together by the same one source- simply- the sun didn't cause to create any planet and for that the sun doesn't cause any planet to move- this analysis shows logical base but left us with puzzles to know (by what rule the planet moves?) and (Why is the sun found in the solar system if it doesn't cause the planets motions?) these questions are answered in the paper abstract and discussions. (3) The mass gravity force can NOT cause any motion- again Newton is wrong- the mass gravity creates a bond between two masses- (the Earth and the moon are bond by the mass gravity)- by that they are similar to a lorry and its trailer – if the lorry moves the trailer will move with the lorry- but the mass gravity can NOT cause any motion- why? suppose the moon moves by the Erath gravity force- the moon moves and produces energy (1/2mv^2) and we have to ask from what source this energy will be provided?- from the mass itself- means if the Earth causes the moon to move the Earth and the moon masses should be decreased by the motion energy- this is a wrong definition for the mass gravity- the mass gravity creates a bond between two masses (The Earth and the moon) if some outer force causes the Earth to move the moon will move with the Earth and in this case the outer force will provide the motion energy for the Earth and the moon- (4) The planets order contradicts Newton gravitation equation- where- the gravitation equation tells (greater mass necessitates shorter distance)- clearly- Jupiter the greatest mass is not the most near planet to the sun- means- the planets order contradicts the equation- when we asked the physicist told us this problem is done by (the initial conditions)- all these are nonsense clearly- planet orbital distance does NOT depend on the sun mass nor on the planet mass- planet orbital distance depends on the neighbor planet orbital distance – my equation proves this fact- let's see it Planet orbital distance equation (my 1st equation) d^2= 4do (d-do) where d= planet orbital distance and do= its neighbor distance

Second Point (The Gravitational Waves Nature Analysis) Let's ask (1) If The Gravitational Waves Are Produced By The Planets Motions Energies- How Can The Gravitational Waves Move By Speed Of Light While The Planets Move By Low Velocities? Or Generally– regardless the gravitational waves source- how can the gravitational waves move by speed of light? From where the energy is provided to enable the waves to move by the speed of light? (2) Can the gravitational waves be reflected in the solar system? what's the result of this reflection on the waves properties, features and nature? (3) Can the gravitational waves energy be increased? Means can one gravitational wave move by low velocity and this wave motion is accelerated to move by high velocity motion? again from what source the energy is provided and how the acceleration is done? (4) If the gravitational waves are produced by the same gravitational field (The physics book states "the gravitational waves are produced by the sun gravitational field") does that mean all gravitational waves move by equal velocities? can some waves move faster than the others? why and how? Let's ask Question No.(1) If the gravitational waves move by velocity 205.8 km/s, how can they move by speed of light? How the velocity 205.8 km/s can be accelerated to be 300000 km/s (speed of light) and where this acceleration is done? Another question can help greatly this discussion Question No.(2) If The Gravitational Waves Move By Speed Of Light (C=300000 Km/S)- How Can These Waves Produce A Light Beam? Let's think how to answer this question- these gravitational waves move by speed of light (C=300000 km/s) but the light beam production needs the value (C^2= squared speed of light)- means- the wave velocity is squared- and how can the wave velocity to be squared? They streamed aboard the frigate. Fen, Northern, and Zhe ran to the command deck while Stormy headed to the AI core. After a minute or two, they could hear her over the ship's PA.
"Fen, this place is brand new! It still has that 'new starship smell'. I haven't smelled that in a millennium at least!"
Zhe sniffed the air, and her ears flicked. "It doesn't smell different to me."
"No, no, like it's a metaphorical smell. The ship is brand new that's all. I'm used to Starjumpers that have been in service longer than nations."
"While I appreciate all of this camaraderie-" Northern began, "The fact remains that we are under attack by the Empire and should leave."
"Sheesh. Is she always like this?" Fen could hear the smile in Stormy's voice. "Sit down then ladies, and buckle up."
As the three of them sat, belts snaked out from the seats and wrapped themselves around them and pulled just this side of too tight, and then when Fen breathed in, they loosened. There was a wobble in her inner ear as Stormy lifted off and the gravity changed from Picaresque to the ship. Fen heard a whining whirr above the normal thrum of the engine.
"Stormy, what was that?"
"Oh, I just freed the weapons. Call it experience, but I think we're going to need them. Speaking of, permission to apply War Emergency Power?"
"Uh, Yes? What's that?" Fen glanced at Northern.
"Ancestors, what a newbie. Northern, explain it please."
Northern ran her hand through her hair. "Human starships have always been over powered. If you run a high output reactor at a lower output it lasts longer, right? So that means that we always have power to spare. War Emergency Power means that you give Stormy permission to remove all the limiters and fuses on the reactors. Power output will greatly increase. She'll be able to wormhole link multiple times in succession - no waiting for the capacitors - all while firing the main battery and the slug throwers."
Fen raised an eyebrow. "But?"
"But it's dangerous." Stormy answered. "It's rare, but reactors can overload. Link the wormhole generator away, blow the battery, hell, blow the whole ship - though that's only happened once or twice. Most of the time a reactor overload is just a hassle." There was a pause and the thrum of the reactors seemed loud on the deck. "We're up next though, so you're going to have to choose."
"I approve War Emergency Power, Stormy, but do be careful."
"Hah! I'm always careful Fen. How do you think I lived this long?"
"Yes, but how many bodies have you gon---eeeeek"
As soon as they cleared the hangar, Stormy applied full thrust and fired a brace of juke charges along the side of the ship. Normally used only for last minute ducking around missiles, Stormy was using them to steer the ship in an erratic way as they thrusted away from Picaresque.
"Contact! Four Super Dreadnoughts trying to hide in the corona." Northern was hunched over a sensor station. "Seems like they're doing some wide angle scanning. They haven't changed their behavior yet."
"Four of them?" Zhe looked over at Fen and her ears flattened. "They don't know about you, right?"
"I don't see why they would. They're looking for the Empress. Speaking of-" She looked up at Northern. "Do you see her yacht in the system?"
"Negative, they must have linked away before the party started."
Suddenly there was a sound like cloth tearing, but lower, deeper. Fen felt it in the soles of her feet. It was the slug launcher. "Stormy, what was that?"
"Sorry Fen, I'm a little busy." Fen's inner ear did backflips as Stormy applied the thrusters asymmetrically and they spun in place. There was a sound like a thunderclap, and then three more in quick succession. The main battery. "Hooo, the Empire loves to pack the weapons on. I swear I didn't have this much firepower when I was a Starjumper!" Stormy is laughing.
"What's going on, Stormy?"
"Just watch on the screen."
Fen activated the screen at her seat. One side was a wireframe map of the system, and the other was a virtualized overview of the current battle. The four Supers were still out in the corona, but there were two battlecruisers that had linked in just moments ago and were firing missiles at the ships streaming away from Picaresque. Fen watched as there were white flashes as the missiles appeared in front of a ship, and rocketed into the nose. It exploded in a silent fireball.
"The missiles have wormhole generators?" Fen's voice cracked and her eyes were glued to the screen.
"Yeah, I remember when they thought of it. Back then the generators were too large and power hungry for it to work. But, I suppose with some of the knowledge transfer from the Sefigans and the Gren's miniaturization tech..."
A lucky shot rang off the hull, sounding like a stick hitting an empty can. The displays at Fen's chair flashed orange and the wireframe of the system was replaced with an overlay of the frigate with sections towards the rear outlined in orange.
"Fen, we've been hit!" Zhe is scrolling through the readouts as fast as she can. "Looks like mostly superficial. The ablative coating on the hull took most of it, but if they hit the same spot again, we're in trouble. Er, in more trouble."
"We're not going to take on four Supers." Stormy continued to evade the shots, but she was right, they couldn't take on the attackers. "Captain, where are we going?"
"I don't know, Stormy, I didn't think I'd have to decide right this second." Fen looked around the room. "I'm open to suggestions!"
"We could go back to the Heap, Daddy told me where they moved to." Zhe looked over at Fen, her eyes bright with hope.
"You know where the Heap is?" Stormy sounded impressed. "I figured that place was just a legend. It's up to the captain, but I'm up for the trip."
A sound like hail assaulted the hull. More lights lit up on Fen's display.
"That'll be the slug throwers. They're too far out to do more than annoy, but Fen, really. It's time to go."
"Uh" Fen looked at the radar, and then the ship schematic and then up at Northern and Zhe. They were both staring at the pads at their stations, trying to figure out what to do next. Fen was pulled against the seatbelts as Stormy did another aerobatic maneuver to get out of the way of something. "Fine, fine. the Heap. Stormy, link us to the Heap please. Zhe give her the coordinates."
"Already entered in, Fen. Stormy, do you see it?"
"I got it Zhe, Linking away now."

Fen sat up. She was in the K'laxi ancestral forest again. Ma crouched near her on the balls of her clawed feet. "Hey Fen. Doing some traveling? I don't see you for nearly a year your time and then you show up in quick succession. Makes me think you miss me." Ma winked and her ears flicked.
"Ma, I miss you every moment of every day. So many decisions would be easier to make if you were still with me." Fen pushed her self into a cross legged position.
"Well, I'm only a link away." Ma sat on her lap. "What's wrong hon?"
"Gord removed the Nanites."
"Yes, we know. What do you think of that?"
"I don't know. I think it's good?" Fen shook her head, like she was trying to clear it. "They didn't seem like they had my best interests in mind, but also they had a lot of power. Maybe I could have used that."
"Maybe you could have, it's true." Ma nodded. "But used it to do what? You know what the Nanites want."
"They want me to be Empress."
"You spoke with the current Empress, what did you think of her?"
Fen turned and looked Ma in the eyes. "She seemed... broken? She was trying so hard to look normal, collected. But you get more than surface deep with her and there was this howling, screaming loneliness, this sadness that permeated her."
Ma leaned back onto Fen's collarbone. Fen put her arms around her wife and hugged her tightly. "Sounds like Gord did you a favor then."
"Maybe, but now what?"
"Now what indeed."

Fen awoke, still strapped in her chair, to Stormy's voice. "Oh, she's one of those."
"Be nice Stormy, you've had captains that have trouble with wormhole links before." Northern chided. "Fen comes back faster than most."
"My wife's there." Fen's voice sounds fuzzy, distant.
"Your what?"
"Ma-ren. She was - is - my wife." Fen's eyes glisten. "She died back home when we were trying to escape with Gord on Spyglass. Shot in the back by one of Tam'tarr's goons as we were running." She sniffs. "I see her, every time I link. We talk. It-" Fen sobs loudly "-it feels like we're still together."
Fen breaks down, hands covering her face. Zhe undoes her buckles and gets up and hugs Fen. She just stands there over her, hugging for a few minutes.
Fen catches her breath and looks up. "What are we going to do?"
"What do you mean?" Northern asks quietly.
"I mean, what are we going to do? Gord and Chloe and the Empress are off on some kind of mission to destroy the Nanites, and I didn't want any part of that and so we ran away. Gord let us go. Said he wasn't going to make us come with him. We leave Picaresque only to get caught up in a battle with the Empire while they're looking for Meredith. They have no idea who we are or how close we were to her. If they did we'd be captured... or worse. Now, we're in the same system as the Heap, and... now what?"
Northern undid her belts and stood. She came over to Fen and Zhe and hugged them both. She was a little awkward at first, but after a moment squeezed them tightly. "We'll do what we always do. We'll figure something out. If it doesn't work, we'll figure something else out. As long as we're still alive, that's what we do." Northern straightened, the front of her shirt damp. "For now, let's go see Zhe's dad again. Maybe we'll get some work."
The siren was startling. The three of them must have jumped a meter. "Stormy! What's wrong?"
"Sorry to interrupt things, but someone just linked in. It's a Super Dreadnought."
Northern looked down at the ship displayed on Fen's pad. "Fuck me."

My 10 Favorite Batgirls covers
You know something we never talk about much is some of the stunning covers Batgirls had (would you believe the series had over seventy-two different covers for a nineteen-issue run + Annual).
That's-- A LOT.
What happens when you get regular and virgin #1 covers that were available in other shops. Now these are my own preferences. I mean, to say the least, Batgirls covers never missed really. These are just my favs.
So are ten of my favorites plus a few honorable mentions.
Honorable Mention #1:
Batgirls #16 International Women's Day Variant by Lynne Yoshi. I just love the way everyone is framed in this with Babs being "the Batgirl" but in a past B&W motif while Cass/Steph are the present Batgirls being juxtaposed in color.
Honorable Mention #2:
Batgirls #12 90s variant by Paulina Ganucheau. I love the homage here the splashy page homage with a nice role reversal with Cass subbing for Tim here. My favorite Steph-centric cover.

Batgirls #13 1:25 variant by Rian Gonzales. Her final one for the series, and man did she go out with a banger. Love the Powerpuff Girls homage with most of the supporting cast (Kyle, Maps, and Alyssa) with random Kon and Kate appearances.

Batgirls #3 variant by Kim Jacinto. Jacinto would do a few variants for the series too, and this is my favorite one of them. Love that each had a fluidity with them but that up-close claw of Cass coming at ya is why this one is my favorite of Jacinto's Batgirls covers.

Batgirls #1 the Glass Cabinet Hobbies variant by Dan Mora. This is one of those "store" exclusive variants, and probably my favorite Batgirls cover Mora did on the series.
I love the poses Cass/Steph have here, along with Bab's silhouette. I just LOVE the yellow dips down and to the right even making a rather striking cover. If anything negative I wish Babs was bigger and Dick was taken out of this cover altogether. Still love Bruce on the right though.

#7 Batgirls #1 (though I forget which store had this exclusive) variant by Babs Tarr. If there's one thing I do enjoy about Burnside Batgirl it is the way Tarr drew Steph in it. Just captured that fun attitude perfectly. Also, love the first "official" drawing of her Cass.
I also love the homage to a famous Batman cover but the personalities of each Batgirl stand out in this one. Plus the pink just makes this one stand out and be so striking.

Batgirls #14 variant 1:25 cover by Dan Hipp. Again, the pink is a nice striking contrast but Hipp one-ups it with the little details sprinkled throughout this cover. The easter eggs sprinkled in are PERFECTION here. Probably the best "layered" cover with so much behind it.

#5 Batgirls #18 AAPI variant cover by Crystal Kung. The second of the two AAPI covers Cass got in the series, I love the colors in this one along with the pose Kung gives Cass here. There's that gremlin nature of Cass I love here.
Along with just the wash the background gets further back. I also love the secondary color Kung gives Cass's cape to make it stand out more.

#4 Batgirls #17 cover by Jorge Corona. My favorite cover of the series with all three Batgirls in them. I love how Corona gets the personalities of the three in here while also the starry background along with the Clocktower. Sooo good.

Batgirls #6 1:25 variant by Rian Gonzales. My favorite Gonzales cover of the series. I love the watercolors Gonzales does the most here. Just the wash of Gotham City in the background with Cass/Steph lying in the pool. Also Haley on the little batmobile float. SOOOOOOO CUTE!!!

Batgirls #14 cover by Jorge Corona. The best issue of the entire series and the peak for me of Corona as well with his covers.
Just the somber mood of the cover sets the tone alone. I also LOVE the way Corona has Cass and Steph's capes here. The way each pop sells it all.
So if that's my #2, what can be my #1?
Well... something that just uplifts me anytime I look at it. Something you'd probably not truly expect.

Batgirls #6 AAPI Heritage Month variant by Audrey Mok. There's just something every time that I look at this cover that fills me with a warm glee.
I adore Mok's use of Cass here and the way the traffic around her lights a part of her up. I adore the pose as well that mid-grapple swing too.
I love the "mini story" this one tells too. Just everything about this cover is perfection to me.

"The ultraviolet light emitted by eleven times ionised iron at temperatures over 2 million degrees Farenheit was used to record the above picture of the Sun on May 16th, 1996. The image was made by the EIT camera onboard the SOHO spacecraft, a space observatory which can continuously observe the Sun. Eleven times ionised iron is atomic iron with eleven of its electrons stripped away. Here the electrons are stripped by the frantic collisions with other atoms and electrons, which occur at the extreme temperatures in the solar corona. Since electrons are negatively charged, the resulting ionised iron atom is highly positively charged. Astronomer's "shorthand" for eleven times ionised iron is written "Fe XII", the chemical symbol for iron followed by a Roman numeral 12 (Fe I is neutral iron)."

Ayane and Maul are about to have some time for themselves after building up an entire crime syndicate.
As the vampiress is about to sink her fangs into the delicate flesh of her beloved Maul, someone dares to enter.
Who is it? Who is brave enough to enter the chambers of the devil at times like this, when he finally can share some moment alone with his sweet fairy?
Anger, rage, everything negative filled the room as the Zabrak drew his lightsaber and immediately activated the crimson blades. An aggressive red light filled the room and Maul made himself ready to attack the disruptive individual who disturbed him and his wife in their intimacies.
The usually merciless demon stopped his attack abruptly when he saw the small silhouette standing in the doorway. The small person rubbed her eyes and pressed his cuddly toy of a loth cat firmly against his body. Softly, the figure with the four horns on her head whispered...

More TLT band AU sketching third house edition! More thoughts below 💀 also I think they’re currently singing Pink Rover by Scene Queen
Okay so Coronabeth has a terrible singing voice (but can absolutely shred, just isn’t allowed to bc the label won’t let her), so she just lip syncs vocals recorded by ianthe. She does have hella stage presence and has her own set of stans and has been kinds of dubbed the front woman of the group. I want to design her in a bunch of cute outfits like the ones Scene Queen wears because she deserves it
Ianthe records vocals for the both of them, having the range to sing things in a deeper register for corona and a higher octave for herself. She sings “her” parts live. Ianthe has a blackout/negative space sleeve representing her bone arm. The other two thinks it’s garish
Babs is a bassists and he’s so pretentious about it but unfortunately he kinda eats (haha get it because uh)
Overall I think they have vibe that’s a mix of Scene Queen, Ashnikko, a little bit of The Pretty Reckless. If you have any suggestions for artists with that vibe pleaseeee lmk

GAH!!!! picking gideon because you already did cam also i want to talk about gideon nav my best friend gideon nav
favorite thing about them: how do i even begin.... i love that she isn't a hero and doesn't become one through the narrative, i love that she is so blatantly posturing all of the time and she builds herself up to be this big confident sexy funnyman because she needs that to keep herself afloat but what she is in reality isn't any lesser! she is funny and she's shy and nervous and she's so powerfully butch to the bone in a way that avoids all negative stereotypes but still manages to highlight the pitfalls butches find themselves in. she has so many layers and people reduce her to some kind of himbo when in reality she's objectively both too mean and too intelligent to be a himbo. i love that you can sense from the very beginning that she is sitting on a massive broiling lake of sadness and for all of her posturing she is both incredibly delicate and one of the strongest characters in the story. i love that she sucks so bad and died a virgin like christ jesus and even missing half her soul she remains consistent not in her outward personality but in her ability to shield her soft underbelly through some sort of performative attitude but EVERYONE can see right through her except gideon herself because everything she does is loud and annoying. she's impulsive and passionate and. incredibly annoying. i hate her and she's my favorite person ever
least favorite thing about them: probably the war crimes but it's not like she's passionate about war crimes she just doesn't gaf. this is just what a lesbian situationship will do to a guy
favorite line: literally all of them man everything she says makes me laugh.... here are some standouts though: - "If my heart had a dick you would kick it" - "I have lots of fealty in me. I fealt the Emperor with every bone in my body. I fealt hard" - "You've got two short minutes left before I punch you right in the butthole" - everything she says when talking to ianthe
brOTP: her and camilla ooooohhhh..... also her and pal. gideon works so well with the sixth house because they're just as annoying and generally peculiar as her they're just more lowkey about it
OTP: i'd have to say griddlehark because i have never stopped thinking about them ever but i do enjoy gideon x camilla (i forgot their ship name) because the cav4cav shit is so good godddd they're just two sides of the same coin, the same story with different upbringings they would help each other out
nOTP: not a huge fan of gideon and corona just because i think corona needs to chase someone who doesn't like her for enrichment purposes and gideon's schoolgirl crush on corona probably doesn't translate well into an actual relationship (let's be real though none of these relationships are going "well") but it is an interesting dynamic
random headcanon: i think she is really gross. genuinely. she picks her nose and doesn't wash her face and harrow gets on her ass about it which i guess is reasonable. also more intense but i definitely think both gideon and harrow have food issues but while harrow copes by being intensely picky gideon has some textual evidence of binge eating which makes sense to me character wise and also would explain why she developed muscle on planet malnutrition
unpopular opinion: i don't really have any once again?? i guess i like to imagine she isn't as attractive as she thinks she is but a lot of people write and draw her as a lesbian adonis which i understand because thats how she describes herself lmao. i think she's kind of cute in a weird way and tamsyn describes her as boyishly pretty so in my mind she's the kind of hot a straight man would never agree with. she is still the hottest person in the world to me

18. Nothing to Write Home About
Freddie had decided to finish work early today. Now that she was leading the Corona operations at Thorpe Abbotts she could afford herself such luxuries. It had only been during the sleepover last night, when Millie and Jem had reminded her that for all intents and purposes she was now her own boss, that Freddie discovered all of the negatives which came with ranking so highly could also be balanced by positives. So, yes, she had a lot of stressful responsibilities, a big workload, and few moments of peace. But she also had her own office and no one to tell her she had to stay in it all hours of the day to toil over her work.
This afternoon, Freddie had a date with her music. She’d been neglecting it lately.
The officers’ club was empty this time of day. Most everyone on base would still be working - it wasn’t even dinner yet. So Freddie waltzed right in like she owned the place, Meatball trotting dutifully behind her, the book of piano sheet music Rosie had given her for Christmas in hand. She sat down at the piano while Meatball found a nearby chair to curl up under.
The blinds were up, letting daylight pour in, and the club looked different this time of day. At night the warm lighting always made it feel so much smaller than it was. It looked big now. Almost lonely.
Carefully, reverently, Freddie lifted the cover off of the keys and ran gentle fingers over them, barely making a sound.
She had already looked over the various pieces of music in the book Rosie had gifted her. Whether he knew it or otherwise, he had good taste. She knew he wasn’t particularly well versed in classical music - jazz, on the other hand, he may as well have been the world-leading expert on - but maybe he’d asked the clerk in the shop for help. Though Freddie liked to think he’d picked the book himself. The music was beautiful and romantic and she liked to think of it as a love letter of sorts. A love letter in a language she understood better, even, than English or German.
The first song she played was Meine Freuden by Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin, and the challenge of playing a new classical piece for the first time was exciting. Her fingers wanted to stumble and her wrists wanted to flick, but the music poured forth from beneath her hands anyway, as endearing and unfamiliar as new love.
She had played through two different songs three times over each before she was interrupted.
“You’re supposed to be at dinner,” Rosie said from the doorway. He was leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed and a fond smile on his face.
Meatball trotted over to him for attention, which Rosie gave him, while Freddie turned on the piano bench to look at him. “Oops?”
Rosie rolled his eyes but he was laughing quietly.
“Time ran away from me,” Freddie told him, moving to sit sideways on the bench with one leg propped up on it. “The music in that book you got me is beautiful.”
“It’s beautiful when you play it,” Rosie replied.
Freddie laughed.
“Come and eat something,” Rosie bid her next. “You can come back and play after.”
Freddie’s eyes sought the clock on the wall and she frowned. “Dinner only started five minutes ago. Let me wait until it calms down a bit in there and then I’ll come.”
Rosie tipped his head back and groaned playfully. “One more song,” he told her, petting Meatball once more before walking further into the room.
Freddie’s smile lit up her face. “Really?!”
Rosie came to sit beside her on the bench and Meatball resumed his position beneath one of the chairs at a nearby table.
“Okay,” Freddie said, flicking back to the first piece of music she’d been playing, “I’ve been practising this one. It’s not perfect, so -”
Rosie was laughing to himself.
“What?”
“Everything you play is perfect,” he told her, grinning. “Just play it.”
Her cheeks were engulfed in flames. She couldn’t meet his eyes anymore. “Okay.”
Rosie sat so quietly and so still beside her, terrified to interrupt her playing, that she almost forgot he was there. His eyes were locked on her fingers, following them across the keys, and every now and again their legs would brush against one another when Freddie used the pedal. It made the skin of her legs feel warm beneath her tights.
Freddie’s fingers slowed as the end of the song neared. She didn’t want it to end. After this, they’d go to the mess hall and be surrounded by noise and Freddie would sit with the girls unless her Corona wireless ops demanded she sit with them and she would be so far away from him. She didn’t want to be far away from him. She wanted to be close. Closer, even, than this.
But the song came to its end eventually. Freddie pressed down on the final key and the pedal longer than she needed to in a futile attempt to drag it out past its expiration.
“Beautiful,” Rosie murmured.
Freddie looked up at him to find a pink hue in his cheeks, his lips just slightly agape as he stared at her, now motionless, fingers. Slowly, he tore his gaze away from her hands resting on the piano keys and met her eyes. And slowly, a smile spread across his face.
Freddie smiled back at him. “Hi,” she whispered.
He grinned. “Hi, Fred.”
Her smile widened a touch. “I like the way you look at me,” she informed him quietly, because in that moment he looked so adoring she almost couldn’t bear it. His blue eyes were gentle and unspeakably fond. His smile was reverential.
“Sometimes I find it hard to believe that you exist,” he whispered back, an explanation of sorts.
It was so easy to get lost in him. In his eyes, in his smell, in his touch. In just the feeling of having him close. Sometimes she felt that he made the world a better place just by existing in it. He certainly made her world a better place just by showing his face there every now and again. How had she managed to go about her life without him?
“I exist,” Freddie assured him with a teasing grin.
Rosie’s eyes were on her smile. On her lips. “You sure?”
“Quite sure, yes.”
“I think I might’ve made you up,” he confessed.
Freddie’s eyes dipped to his mouth as he spoke. To his lips. “Only one way to make sure,” she said.
His lips quirked up at the edges. “By pinching me?” he asked.
She shook her head just slightly, an almost imperceptible jerk of her head. Tilting her face up, as far as her neck would let her, she closed the distance between them until she could feel his breath fanning over her lips.
He tilted his face down for her, to make it easier. Smiled as he waited for her to cross the line for them.
Freddie drew in a deep breath and let her eyes flutter closed. She pressed her lips gently against his and encouraged him into a kiss.
It was slow, soft, just a little bit unsure. She’d never been the one to make the final push.
But Rosie was sure enough for the both of them. His hands found her waist and tugged her closer, and then even closer, until she found it would just be easier to sit on his lap.
Their lips remained attached as she moved to straddle him on the piano bench. His hands held onto the piano to make sure she didn’t knock against it. Then, secure and with better leverage, Freddie leaned further into him, twined her hands into his hair, and let herself revel in the feeling of finally, finally, having his lips against hers.
His lips moved slowly, his tongue even slower, and it made Freddie want to squirm. He smiled as if he could tell.
And she was worried she wasn’t very good at it anymore. At kissing. She was out of practice. He was clearly very good at it - better, even, than she’d imagined. He’d clearly been underselling himself when he’d told her he’d kissed ‘a few’ girls back in America. But then again, he was twenty-six and gorgeous and smart and kind and brave. If he hadn’t been around the block a few times she would have been more surprised.
But when they finally pulled apart for air all of Freddie’s worries of inadequacy disappeared. There was something in his eyes as he looked at her which was even stronger now than it had been before.
He kissed her again. Lifted a hand to cup her cheek and tilt her face just a little bit closer to his.
She let out a whimper which she was immediately humiliated by, but Rosie only pulled her impossibly closer.
Until -
“Rosie, I gotta talk to you about - you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me!”
Freddie was giggling even before she’d properly pulled back from Rosie. “Sorry, Jack.”
“Not more fucking sorry than I am,” Jack replied, lifting a hand to rub at his eyes. “Jesus Christ. This is a public place!”
“No one’s here right now!” Rosie argued. “How did you know I was here?”
“Pappy told me you were going to find Fred. I heard the piano when I was walking by earlier. Figured you probably heard it too when you walked by.” He huffed, seemingly annoyed to have had his attention diverted. “Anyway, if you two could maintain a sense of public fucking decency for five seconds, I was just trying to tell you, Rosie, that I gotta talk to you about the next mission.”
Freddie made no moves to get off of Rosie’s lap and he made no moves to make her.
Jack threw his hands up and sighed. “Fine. We’ll talk later.”
Rosie was grinning. “I’ll come find you after dinner.”
“Yeah,” Jack said, frowning as he looked at Meatball. “You do that.”
He turned and left directly.
Freddie tucked her face into Rosie’s neck and laughed. “If he had been five minutes earlier I would have killed him.”
“If he’d been five minutes earlier I would’ve helped you,” Rosie replied.
Freddie laughed again.
She let herself linger for a minute, with her face pressed to his neck, before deciding she wanted to see his face. Sitting up straight, or as straight as she could in his lap, she was greeted with a wide smile which didn’t seem to have slipped during the time he’d been out of her sight.
Too cute. How was he that cute? It should’ve been illegal. Unable to help it, Freddie leaned in and tucked her nose up beside his, shutting her eyes and then rubbing their noses together.
Rosie laughed softly.
Freddie pulled back just a bit and moved to kiss him again when her stomach rumbled, almost obnoxiously loud in the quiet of the officers’ club.
Rosie gave her a look. “Dinner,” he told her, faux sternly. “Now.”
“One more kiss first?”
“One more kiss and we’ll be here all night,” Rosie replied, but he kissed her quickly on the lips anyway.
Freddie huffed out a laugh. “Dinner and then another kiss?” she asked.
He laughed again, standing up with her still in his arms when it became clear she wasn’t moving. “If you eat all of it then yeah.”
Freddie frowned. “You’re mean.”
He rolled his eyes. Just when he opened his mouth to retort, however, he banged his shin on the leg of the piano while trying to manoeuvre them both out from behind the bench. His eyes fell shut, his bottom lip got caught between his teeth, and a low hiss of air emerged from his mouth.
Freddie knew it must have hurt really badly. She also knew it was probably her fault for refusing to stand up herself. As such, she held in her laugh with all of her might, thanking god that his eyes were closed.
When he opened them she tried to smooth over her features. She was sure she was red in the face from holding her breath.
“Ow,” Rosie said.
Freddie’s laugh all but exploded out of her.
“Shut up,” Rosie complained as he set her down on her feet.
Meatball started barking as he approached because her laughter was so loud and so uncontrollable.
“Sorry,” Freddie choked out. “It’s not that funny. I just -”
“Fred,” Rosie complained again.
“I’m sorry. I know it probably hurts so much.”
“It does.”
For some reason, that only made it funnier.
She delayed them a further five minutes while trying to get herself under control. Rosie threatened to throw her over his shoulder and carry her to the mess hall if she didn’t stop but eventually she managed to. But she caught him rubbing his shin as he let her past him out of the door and sputtered a laugh all over again, and was forced to enter the mess hall in fits of giggles.
Freddie was still talking about it in the officers’ club that night. And no one else found it even half as funny as she did, but she kept telling people about it anyway because Rosie went red and frowny when she did and she thought that was even funnier.
“Rosie, I have no idea why you put up with her,” Millie said at one point, when she’d already had to endure the story five times.
When Rosie chuckled quietly and shrugged, lifting his glass for a sip of beer, Freddie wrapped both of her arms around his free arm and hugged it to her chest. “I make it worth your while, don’t I, Rosie?” she asked, batting her eyelashes.
He glanced down at her and kissed her hairline. She knew he loved when she hugged his arm, not because he ever told her but because he always got all sweet and affectionate when she did. He could never deny her anything when she asked like this, and neither could he hold a grudge.
Jem was sitting at their table, Meatball beneath her chair, and chewing on her nails. They were freshly painted a bright red so they must have tasted awful but she gnawed at them anyway like a child trying a lollipop for the first time.
“Feel like doing a shot, Jem?” Freddie asked, trying to settle her, to remind her that all of this was meant to be fun. Paddy had agreed to the dancing with wild enthusiasm and now everyone was waiting for Jem to decide she was ready. She could still back out if she wanted to but Freddie knew she wouldn’t. Freddie also knew she wanted to dance, really, she was just frightened. The same way Freddie had been frightened to dance with Rosie even when she’d wanted to, though the stakes were wildly different.
Jem nodded almost absentmindedly. “Yeah, alright,” she replied quietly.
Freddie knocked back the rest of her lemonade and stood, smoothing down her skirt. “Come, then, sweetness. Bar’s clearing out at the moment.”
Freddie and Jem waited for Atley’s attention quietly, Jem chewing on the inside of her cheek.
Freddie smiled and wrapped both of her arms around Jem’s waist, squeezing her lightly. “Feeling alright, Jemmy?”
“Nervous,” Jem replied, glancing down at her.
“Normal to be nervous,” Freddie assured her. “Do you feel excited too, though? Even just a little bit?”
Jem finally cracked a smile, her eyes seeking Paddy clearly of their own accord because once they found her they flicked right back to Freddie. “Yes,” she admitted.
“Good,” Freddie decided. “You take your time on deciding when. We’re in no hurry.”
Atley served them their two shots of whiskey with a nod and a smile before moving onto the next patrons. Freddie and Jem linked arms as they tossed them back. “Liquid courage,” Jem declared, clearing her throat of the burn.
Freddie grinned. “Feeling brave, are we?”
“I’ve spent my whole life being frightened,” Jem said. Her eyes, once again, sought out Paddy in the crowd and found her without even having to try. They softened when they caught her and stayed there, bright and fond. “Don’t feel up to it anymore.”
“That’s my Jem,” Freddie said proudly. “Shall I go and get Mils? I think the next song might be about to start.”
“Go put on a show, Fred,” Jem told her, laughing as she smoothed down her skirt and jacket sleeves.
Freddie grinned at her. “No one’s eyes will be on you, Jem, we’ll make sure of it.”
Returning to the table with a spring in her step, Freddie forewent heading over to her seat and instead rested her hands on the back of Millie’s and lent down over her shoulder. “Fancy a dance?” she asked, smiling wildly.
Millie turned to look at her, a similar grin on her face. “I thought you’d never ask.”
The eyes of the men at the table were confused as Freddie offered her hand and Millie took it, leading her to the dance floor. Pappy and Bailey both looked to Rosie, who shrugged, as clueless as anyone.
Freddie and Millie took their places front and centre on the dance floor just as a new song started up, upbeat and joyful. Freddie was taller so she took on the man’s role while Millie played the woman, and off they went, laughing loudly as they galloped and twirled and generally made fools of themselves across the floor.
Freddie noted Amy and Cecelia dancing not too far away from them, pressed close in case that’s how Jem and Paddy wanted to dance. They were grinning at each other as they went about their performance, joking with each other and tripping over each other’s feet, neither of them used to dancing with a partner the same height as they were.
A few of the Operation Corona wireless operator girls joined in the fun, dancing with each other the same as they would with a man. And before long Jem and Paddy were tucked in the middle of a sea of all-female couples, and if they were dancing slightly slower than everyone else, slightly closer, smiling at each other slightly fonder, who would ever have noticed? They were just one couple amongst many. Nothing to write home about.
The girls danced together for three songs total. Jem and Paddy left after that, Jem tapping Freddie and Millie on the shoulder as they headed for the door, smiling so wide her cheeks must have been hurting. It made Freddie’s heart ache with tenderness. She’d never seen Jem look so utterly joyful.
Millie winked at Freddie and Freddie laughed as the couple disappeared out the door. The two of them would be back later, probably, but they would get their privacy now while everyone else was still at the club.
“Good on them,” Millie said to Freddie as they headed back to the table, arm in arm. “They’re getting more than I am, that’s for sure.”
“And me,” Freddie said with a giggle.
Millie nudged her with a roll of her eyes. “Won’t be long, Fred, and you know it.” When Freddie glanced at her she was inclining her head in the direction they were going and Freddie followed the gesture.
There was Rosie, eyes on her. And there was no mistaking it. Bedroom eyes.
Freddie looked back at Millie with a roll of her eyes. “Don’t say anything.”
“I’m not.”
“Your face is saying everything.”
“My face always looks like this.”
Freddie scoffed but dropped it as they arrived back at the table.
There was a fresh lemonade waiting for Freddie and a fresh beer waiting for Millie.
“You know, I think I like you, Rosie,” Millie said as she sat down and sipped at it.
Freddie leaned over and kissed his cheek in thanks for her drink. “He’s taken, Mils.”
Millie scoffed. “So am I.”
“Then mind your business.”
“You have fun?” Rosie asked, moving some of Freddie’s hair off of her shoulder and smoothing it down her back as she sipped her drink.
“Mh-hm,” Freddie hummed. “So much.”
“I’m a better partner than you, Rosie,” Millie taunted.
“You hear that, twinkle toes?” Milburn, Rosie’s bombardier, said, smirking across the table at him. “She thinks she’s a better dancer than you.”
Freddie sat up straighter. “Twinkle toes?” she echoed, starting to grin.
Rosie’s head fell back as he groaned. “Damn it, Milburn.”
“What?” Freddie asked, looking between the two of them with increasing intrigue. “Is there something I don’t know about?”
“I said no twinkle toes jokes in front of Fred,” Rosie said, tipping his head back down and shooting half-hearted daggers at Milburn.
For his part, Milburn only carried on smirking into his beer.
“Rosie’s an excellent dancer, Fred,” Pappy said from Rosie’s other side. “I’m surprised he ain’t shown you yet.”
Freddie’s eyebrows furrowed. “We dance together all the time.”
“But have you ever seen him dance solo?” Bailey cut in.
Millie was giggling from beside Freddie.
“Show me,” Freddie demanded, turning back to Rosie.
He groaned again. “No.”
“Rosie,” Freddie said, frowning.
“Fred,” he replied, sipping from his beer.
“I want to see.”
“No.”
“Rosie,” Freddie complained once more, dragging out the final syllable. She tried to wrap her arms around his bicep but he pulled it away, smirking down at her.
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing.”
She pouted.
“Put on some Artie Shaw and he’ll show you,” Milburn commented, grinning as he watched their exchange. He was clearly thrilled with himself to have put Rosie’s foot in it for him.
Freddie turned to Milburn with her eyes all lit up. “I can make that happen,” she said.
“Once you see it you can never unsee it, Fred,” Pappy warned.
“Oh?” she asked, humouring him. “Will it make me change my mind?” Nothing could make her change her mind, she was just thoroughly enjoying watching Rosie squirm.
“Probably,” Bailey joked.
Rosie was dying a slow, painful death beside her.
“Another time,” Freddie said, finally putting him out of his misery. “For now, let’s dance together.”
Instantly, Rosie pushed his chair back and stood, then offered Freddie his hand to help her stand too. As he led her to the dance floor she snorted out a giggle and he cut his eyes at her. “What now?”
“Just thinking about when you banged your shin earlier -”
Rosie groaned. “Fred.”
She kept on giggling until he kissed her when they were dancing, right there in the middle of the dance floor. And then she was too enchanted to think of anything else.
