nstallation shots from Corn Maidens, a show where @k84art and I came together at the non-profit #Tribeca @openinggallery around shared themes of #female power, earth rituals, and the beauty and dangers that inhere in the natural and human-made world.

Kate and I, initially converged in #NewMexico as a result of a curatorial hunch initiated by #SantaFe based curator @tressabrittin who got inspired by the way our iconographies somehow spoke across cultural differences.

Upon meeting we lit the #studio ablaze with our synergy, captured into one another’s work, in #sisterhood and recognition of the wound, in a dance of #divine #femininepower that defies monumental tones of brutality— #slavery #warfare and #patriarchy

The High Priestess was a delightful watercolor piece to paint, inspired by Lynn Arajuo's amazing ideas. I wanted the corn maiden to look wise and calm at the entrance of a corn maze. This card is loaded with symbolism from the pomegranate pattern on her dress (evoking the myth of Persephone), to the flowers, book, and prairie grouse -- "the Native American spirit guide associated with the Sacred Spiral because of its spinning dance." Even the way I approached the lighting has symbolic relevance. Everything flowed from my paintbrush from large washes to the smallest details, helping achieve a warm luminescence that invites the viewer into the scene. 🌿🌽To some people this is just corn on a simple string. For me, it’s so much more. It symbolizes my courage and my freedom. I was 13 when I first started making corn necklaces. I came up with the idea myself and received so many compliments from the ones I wore around my neck that I decided to start selling them. I would come home from school and spend hours stringing these brilliant kernels of rainbow and gold. I made enough that I started selling them at the local coop and they flew off the shelves. I remember how nervous I was when I realized I should branch out and sell them in other markets all across midcoast Maine. My mom would drive me around and encourage me to try this shop or that. I was sick with anxiety at first but it eventually got easier and I learned to love introducing myself and my corn necklaces. I would sell them for $8 each which was great at 13 but it was time consuming and so I wanted to figure out a way to make less product yet make more money~that’s when I started incorporating real gemstone beads and well, that’s when things really took off! I was getting custom orders and selling some necklaces up to $70 a piece! I felt as rich and famous as Alanis Morrissette! What I’m trying to say is that I had a real good thing going...and then I met a boy. Well, 24 years later the brilliant kernels are back in my hands and I’m ready to create magic with them once again. My favorite tamales are from a food stand at the @originaltorrancefarmersmarket. The fillings are more than just meat or cheese. They’ve got the fancy combos like BBQ Chicken w/Red Onion, Cilantro, and Smoked Gouda Cheese and Sweet Corn w/Roasted Green Chile and Cheddar. 🌱this time last year we were watching as little kernels of corn that we had sprinkled around in the blessing of our new space, began to thrive as little baby corn plants!.. if you know us well you know that our spirits are deeply connected in our native roots.. according to tradition, corn maidens were created by the great spirit as guides for the people of the earth… they were sent to help people determine from among the huge array of plants and animals on earth what was good for them to eat, what would nourish them.. corn maidens were sent to give each clan a kernel of corn that if properly cared for would sustain them… the people took their seeds of corn and planted them in the ground offering water, singing to them, nurturing them, praising them, and caressing the soil around the seed.. slowly the corn grew and, like a child, it grew strong and beautiful with the love and prayers provided by the people.. as the plants grew the people began to realize the power of their nurturing and their faith grew, not only faith in the great provider but also in themselves.. and as their faith grew, mature ears of corn sprouted from the plant providing not only the sustenance that they needed but the power to provide for their entire tribe for many many years to come.. 🌾 we want to thank you all once again for your faith, praise, nurturing, and love.. it is because of you that we are able to provide for our community.. and our tribe for many, many years to come ✨💛✨ super lovely photo by the enchanting @daughterofthesun_ #gratimentality #tribe #cornmaiden #myelementality (at Elementality)
