Kigali 1 Ch D R1: Corentin Denolly/Damien Wenger [3] def. Daniel Cukierman/Yshai Oliel 6-4, 3-1 ret. Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Despite the competitive first set, Cukierman/Oliel might still be able to handle the return games, but it was insufficient for them to create or convert their chances, mainly due to Cukierman's previous singles match might have taken a toll. In contrast, thanks to their ground game, C. Denolly/Damien still managed to create 4 of their break points, converting 50% of them throughout both sets before Cukierman's retirement.
On the other hand, C. Denolly/Damien appeared more consistent on serve, while the injury sustained midway possibly hampered Cukierman/Oliel's service games. Scoring twice more aces than the latter (4 to 2), the third seeds won at least 81% of their serve points, having an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 82%. However, Cukierman's recurring back injury might have affected their second serves, only winning 37% of their second serve points, 44% lesser than C. Denolly/Damien as this match progressed.
In tomorrow's doubles quarterfinals, C. Denolly/Damien will face Max Houkes/Clement Tabur, who defeated Seita Watanabe/Takeru Yuzuki 6-2, 7-6(5) in the first round. While this could possibly be a competitive match, once again their balance from the baseline to the net will be highly tested in this match. Should be interesting to see how it turns out to seal the day!

ATP Challenger Meerbusch 2018 - August 11 2018 - Q1 - Jelle Sels (NED/4) def. Corentin Denolly (FRA) 6-1, 6-1
The first of two Dutch-French encounters today. Jelle Sels (ranked 368) demolished Corentin Denolly (ranked 504) in one hour and one minute. Dominant all the time, Sels had Denolly under control throughout the match. Corentin served some double faults at crucial moments and Jelle didn’t make a lot of mistakes.
Solid win for Jelle, who celebrated his 23rd birthday the day before and went on the Meerbsuch roadtrip with his buddy and also Dutch pro Gijs Brouwer. Jelle has made good progress in the rankings and is one spot away from his all time high rank of 367. Later that day coincidentally we chatted a bit about his life on the tour whilst we were rooting for Gijs Brouwer to win. The boys couldn’t afford to bring their coach with them on trips like these (only in larger groups) because it’s tough to cover the costs. Jelle explained you need to get deep in Futures (SF or F) and play out-of-ITF/ATP tour money tournaments in Germany or France to earn something. I hope Jell will continue to play well. His next tournament is a $25k future in Poland.

The second set became its own rollercoaster, since Cukierman's back acted up in the middle of the third game, hence an impromptu medical time-out was called at *1-1 30-15, likely due to his singles second-round match taking a toll. Subsequently, they still managed to have a game point due to C. Denolly/Damien's forehand error, but a volley error on Cukierman's end, followed by the third seeds' forehand down-the-line winner, resulted in C. Denolly/Damien's break of serve to 2-1. Beginning the next game with an ace, they managed to consolidate the lead to 3-1, but right as Cukierman was supposed to serve, his body gave up on him, thus his and Oliel's retirement, advancing C. Denolly/Damien to the quarterfinals.

Around two hours after the conclusion of Daniel Cukierman's singles match, he and Yshai Oliel came back for their first doubles match together since the ITF M25 Sunderland 2022 when they had to withdraw in the quarterfinals due to Oliel's foot injury sustained in the singles quarterfinals, and they faced third seeds Corentin Denolly/Damien Wenger in the first round. This could have been a difficult match, but the first set was proven to be competitive before things happened in the second set.
After four consecutive service game holds, Cukierman/Oliel found out that their game points were foiled due to Cukierman's failed volley shank to force the deciding point, but it was successfully converted thanks to C. Denolly/Damien's working volley to 3-2. The third seeds then consolidated their lead to 4-2, and almost doubled the break before Cukierman/Oliel saved it with a smash, thus they held to 4-3 by the end of the said game.
Eventually, C. Denolly/Damien earned an opportunity to serve for the first set. Despite conceding two points, one of which was due to another unforced error, C. Denolly/Damien took the first set 6-4 thanks to an unreturned serve, setting themselves one set forward in this match.

Meanwhile, in another court, and still in San Miguel de Tucuman...
Qualifier and former World No. 467 Felix Corwin, who turned out to be an assistant coach in the Purdue University and previously graduated from the University of Minnesota (batch 2014), advanced to the second round after defeating alternate Jacob Brumm 6-1, 6-3, faced fifth seed Hernan Casanova, who also defeated alternate Igor Gimenez 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the previous round. F. Corwin, who previously battled Marc Polmans 3-6, 7-6(3), 4-6 despite the loss in previous week's Sarasota Challenger after defeating both Garrett Jones and Corentin Denolly in the qualifying rounds, had a competitive showing in this match, especially as he tried to counter H. Casanova's aggression.
F. Corwin initially had a head start to this match thanks to his forehands, where he went after H. Casanova's failed finishes to finally break early to 2-0, followed by a consolidation (3-0) right after. Since then, H. Casanova successfully put his name on the board with a service game hold (3-1) even though the fifth seed smashed his way to force a deuce before the said hold.
Subsequently, H. Casanova started to absorb some pace as he engage in some rallies in hopes to bring F. Corwin off-balance. Indeed, after F. Corwin's double fault, H. Casanova fired a backhand down-the-line winner that helped him secure the break-back to 3-3, as well as levelling the play. The fifth seed then appeared firmer in the next games through his deep returns, as F. Corwin missed his +1 return to be broken to 5-3. As a result, H. Casanova earned an opportunity to serve for the first set, which he successfully did despite surviving several break points beforehand to take the first set 6-3.

Kigali 2 Ch R1: Seita Watanabe/Takeru Yuzuki def. Christopher Rungkat/Pruchya Isaro 7-6(2), 7-6(4) Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
As return-heavy as it looked, this match turned out to be concluded in two tie-break sets. This way, their anticipatory returns under pressure turned out to be tested, with T. Yuzuki/S. Watanabe's forehand return aces setting their mini-breaks in both sets' tie-breakers before holding their service games right after. Interestingly, Rungkat/P. Isaro struggled to find their balance, taking into account how the Japanese pair tried to utilize their angles from the baseline, and while having most of their 3 chances in the second set, they were unable to capitalize on it considering T. Yuzuki/S. Watanabe's clutch appearance as well on their serves, thus the Japanese pair stood out by the end of this match.
Service game-wise, it appeared that both players had their own service game strengths. S. Watanabe/T. Yuzuki had an exceptional first serve winning percentage by 11% with 86% compared to Rungkat/P. Isaro's 75%, aided by their 3 aces to get themselves out of trouble in various occasions. On the other hand, double-faulting four times than Rungkat/P. Isaro's twice, S. Watanabe/T. Yuzuki found their second serve winning percentage faded to 56%, 7% lower than Rungkat/P. Isaro, but it was insufficient for the last week's runner-up to prevail in this match.
In the quarterfinals, S. Watanabe/T. Yuzuki will face the winner between third seeds Corentin Denolly/Damien Wenger or Sai Karteek Reddy Ganta/Guy Orly Iradukunda, which is currently ongoing as this was written. This could be an exciting play, with their balance becoming one of the main aspects to be looked after apart from their groundstrokes, might be neat!

Kigali 1 Ch QF: Kamil Majchrzak [WC] def. Calvin Hemery 7-5, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Kamil might have had his chances earlier in this match, but his ability to press Hemery's baseline game finally paid off toward the end of the first set, where he built his aggression from. By then, he limited Hemery's options since Kamil passed the French third seed often through his forehand or volley side, which contributed to 6 of his break points, including the ones earlier from the first set. Thanks to those as well, he converted 50% of his break points and left no room for Hemery to create more chances despite the latter having only one break point from a similar pass a game before Kamil broke for the first set.
Furthermore, Kamil had a more dominant service game as this match progressed. Despite scoring 3 less aces than Hemery's 10, Kamil was 9% away from perfection as he had a 91% winning percentage from his first serves. On the other hand, despite both players double-faulting just once and having their own second serve troubles, Kamil still managed to win 66% of his second serve points, 24% more than Hemery, who often rushed his follow-ups while Kamil's strokes were solid as the match progressed.
Seventh seed Max Houkes already awaits in the semifinal, who defeated Corentin Denolly 6-2, 6-3 to set up tomorrow's morning clash (in the first timeslot, local time). Knowing both players' clay potential, especially with M. Houkes being a lefty, this could be interesting to see how Kamil sets this match up from the start. His aggression from today might help him to pass M. Houkes, but it depends on how the seventh seed will respond. Should be a fun one to kick off the day with!

ITF M25 Sunderland D SF: Daniel Cukierman/Edan Leshem [1] def. Ben Jones/Daniel Little 7-6(5), 6-4 Match Recap
In this week's ITF Sunderland semifinals, the first seeds Daniel Cukierman/Edan Leshem took on Ben Jones/Daniel Little. Back in Sheffield, Cukierman partook in the doubles with Joshua Paris as second seeds, who had to withdraw in the semifinals due to Paris' injury, while Cukierman & Leshem had yet to drop a set before the semifinals. Funnily enough, they could have met Orel Kimhi & Sahar Simon, who got defeated by B. Jones/D. Little 1-6, 1-6 in the first round.
It was all holding game until Cukierman & Leshem put more pressure and broke 4-2 in the first set. However, they got broken back at 4-3 right after a double fault, hence B. Jones/D. Little's ability to get back in tje game at 4-all. This set ended in a tie-break, with several twists: Cukierman/Leshem should have served for the set at 6-1 in the tie-breaker; however, the set points were fumbled as a result of 2 failed volleys, B. Jones/D. Little's unreturned serve, and a failed forehand on their half, before managing to serve it out to close the set at 7-6(5).
📽 ITF Media
Just at the third game of the second set, the forehand coming from the British side went too wide for a moment to be created on Cukierman/Leshem's half at 1-1* to 15-30. However, the moment was negated with a working volley, and it was not over yet: Leshem's moonball winner created a break point, which was followed by B. Jones/D. Little's failed volley response, enabling the Israeli pair to break at 2-1. They subsequently held 3-1.
Several games later, there was a hot shot coming from Leshem as documented above. He once again pulled a forehand winner from the neighboring court, something he did at one point in the last round against Simon Freund/Corentin Denolly to nullify the break point from B. Jones/D. Little, although the latter held at 4-3 at the end. The accuracy of his return depth once again was proven when he was brought around the baseline, and pulled a forehand winner to close the rally at 4-4* to 15-15. Ultimately, they found a way to break and serve for the match to 6-4.
In tomorrow's finals, Cukierman/Leshem will face another British pair in Joshua Paris/Anton Matusevich (glad Paris turned out all right after what happened last week). This can turn out to be another exhilarating (and entertaining) match, so it is worth seeing what is going to happen!
