I really feel like your blog is missing barracuda shark discourse, so I’ve come to deliver.
People are probably gonna think me crazy but:
When I was around eight, I was around five foot (give or take a few inches) and 100lbs, but I was visiting my mom’s home country in LatAm, getting dragged through the street market by my abuela as one does, and I saw them carting a great barracuda that was larger than me in some sort of cart.

That is a core memory if ever I saw one. I get it though! Barracudas are creepy looking... there's something so soulless in their face... and those mouths... In a way, I think I'd expect more intelligence from a shark than a barracuda, so I feel like it wouldn't attack me without cause whereas barracudas seem to not operate on logic, they just operate on pure instinct and viciousness. Not sure how founded this assumption is in reality, of course, lol.
I've always been scared of water monsters just in video games, with the barracuda shark from Quake II being my introduction (and the namesake of this blog!). There's just something about the vulnerability of being in water with something threatening that is better adapted to moving in it than you are. I used to avoid going in water in video games if I could help it, now it's just an exhilarating thrill for me. Interestingly enough, this fear never translated into real life; I don't think about it when I swim in lakes or oceans. (Also somehow I've managed to avoid getting stung by a jellyfish despite living near beaches for much of my life!)
Side note: The only creature that truly terrifies me is cockroaches, I've had too many awful and gross experiences with them. T^T

what's up with not for broadcast? i've had it in my wishlist for a while just from the basic premise of the game seeming interesting.
first of all, its political satire is somehow both heavy handed and bafflingly confused. like the plot of the game is that Evil Socialists take over by Doing Populism (scary!) and then do Evil Socialism by taking away rich people's money and doing 1984 to everybody. and idk this could just be standard anticommunism and it'd be annoying but not confusing. but the game is also like--like, it makes a point of how the Evil Socialist Government gets sanctioned by the rest of the world causing economic crisis, and how the main anti-government rebel is a self-centred paranoid far-right podcaster clearly based off alex jones, and how the rich people were all nasty iditos who didn't deserve their money. which like. i don't know. what's the game trying to say, then?
the only possible takeaway i can take from how these two factions are presented is like 'wealth inequality and capitalism is bad but it would also be bad to do anything about it'. the only character who is presented as even remotly sympathetic is the news reader who is decidedly apolitical and only cares about Getting To Read The News With Journalistic Objectivity. so many weird and confusing and self-defeating political assumptions baked into this game.
secondly, the humour misses the mark because it just can't fucking stop. like the joke will reach its punchline but because there needs to be a set amount of footage for the core gameplay loop to work jokes just get pushed wayyy past the point of the punchline. and not in an artful way like tim robinson or aunty donna just in a very tedious way where even quite funny jokes become absolutely fucking obnoxious the more they go on for. this is subjective of course but at some point watching C-tier monty python skits stretched out to three times their natural length just became so grating.
finally, the gameplay is so close to being good but losers confidence in its main gameplay mechanic at the last moment. like most of it is deciding when to cut between several different camera feeds, like, yknow, potentially making people look bad or good, undermining or reinforcing propaganda, etc. and this is a really good core mechanic that's really good and satisfying to play with! but unfortunately they keep interrupting it with stupid gimmicks like wiggling a line about to make it match anotehr line (the TV signal is out of tune or whatever) which instead of feeling like you're making meaningful choices about the titular broadcast just feel like pointless busywork. all these little distractions really really ruined the gameplay aspect of this for me which otherwise was extremely good and intersesting.

While reading IRS, he'd never questioned how Shen Yuan knew that Luo Baixiao's sword was called Xin Mo. Sword names were a thing; it was just part of the genre. Of course the main character knew the name of an important sword. But actually living in the world, that knowledge had more significance.
Shen Yuan had a deep wealth of knowledge of demons, their customs and their artifacts, so why did he think Luo Binghe needed Xin Mo specifically to kill Linguang-jun?
"This Venerable One can provide enlightenment," Meng Mo interrupted.

"That obsession of yours was correct; you have the blood of the Heavenly Demons. Never let it be said that this Venerable One is foolish enough to work against fated royalty."
Luo Binghe considered his words. In light of everything else, the Heavenly bit of his demonic reveal hadn't seemed particularly important. The only known Heavenly Demon in IRS was Zhuzhi-lang, a recent addition at the time of his death. Zhuzhi-lang was the general of the former demonic emperor: Tianlang-jun, who had been suppressed by an alliance of the righteous sects in general and the Xuan Su Sword in particular.
Whatever particular strength or power Heavenly Demons had was glossed over in favor of the fact that, as half snake-demon, Zhuzhi-land had two dicks. That said, for having reached terminal velocity before making impact, Luo Binghe was startlingly alive and cognizant.
"Enlighten me, then."
"The Mobei clan possess the ability to open portals between spatial locations, not unlike the Black Moon Rhinoceros-Python. Xin Mo can do the same, if the legends are true," Meng Mo said. "But given that you survived the merging of your spiritual and demonic cores, it's likely unnecessary as more than a tool to escape this place."
Feelings was slowly returning to Luo Binghe's body. While it was all pain, it was still feeling. If nothing else, the regenerative traits of a Heavenly Demon were certainly strong.
"So you've jumped ship onto Team Luo. Why should I trust you won't betray me in turn?"
Meng Mo didn't answer for long enough that Luo Binghe was able to wiggle his fingers. They didn't feel broken, but his torso had taken the lion's share of the damage when he slammed back-first into the rock. Luo Binghe was tentatively flexing his ankles when he finally got a response.
"Ever since this Venerable One ascended from his flesh-"
"You're anchored in me anyway," Luo Binghe accused. "And you're just now taking my side?"
"Watch your tone, brat. This Venerable One is the only reason you surivived failing your task and missing a dosage of the antidote."
"Get ready to do it again, Old Man," Luo Binghe thought, baring his teeth.
"Unnecessary. Heavenly Demons are immune to almost all poisons. Clearly Linguang-jun failed to assess your bloodline before poisoning you. Or he assumed you would die when the seal broke, though the latter is short-sighted considering the value of your body as a panacea."
"How reassuring," Luo Binghe replied. It was getting hard to think; his ribs were piecing themselves together, the shards jerking sharply out of his organs and back into place.
"Your first lesson as a Heavenly Demon approaches, brat," Meng Mo replied.
Before he had time to ask for elaboration, Luo Binghe heard steps on the broken rock. He couldn't turn his head. He couldn't move more than making a fist, but the steps came closer and with it the feel of assessing, predatory eyes. The next thing he knew, the pain in his ribs was eclipsed by a vicious bite taken from the meat of his thigh.
Luo Binghe couldn't manage more than a pained gasp, his body still too broken to react.
"Good, it has your blood in its body. Feel it. Reach for the you outside your flesh. Tear it apart from the inside with your blood parasites."
Meng Mo made it sound so simple, but at the same time the words sounded like vague, New Age claptrap. However, he didn't have a choice; the creature's muzzle was back, licking at his leg and pushing the torn fabric of his trousers out of the way of his flesh.
Luo Binghe made an attempt to feel outside of himself despite the pain, but even when he could grasp the blood parasites, he didn't know how to control them. After several false starts, he succeeded by visualizing old children's videos depicting how vaccines worked. He spread his awareness through the creature like an innoculation and then reversed his intent, tearing it apart on the celluar level.
The beast collapsed on top of his open wound, but a success was a success.

Share Your Anecdotes: Multicore Pessimisation
I took a look at the specs of new 7000 series Threadripper CPUs, and I really don't have any excuse to buy one, even if I had the money to spare. I thought long and hard about different workloads, but nothing came to mind.
Back in university, we had courses about map/reduce clusters, and I experimented with parallel interpreters for Prolog, and distributed computing systems. What I learned is that the potential performance gains from better data structures and algorithms trump the performance gains from fancy hardware, and that there is more to be gained from using the GPU or from re-writing the performance-critical sections in C and making sure your data structures take up less memory than from multi-threaded code. Of course, all this is especially important when you are working in pure Python, because of the GIL.
The performance penalty of parallelisation hits even harder when you try to distribute your computation between different computers over the network, and the overhead of serialisation, communication, and scheduling work can easily exceed the gains of parallel computation, especially for small to medium workloads. If you benchmark your Hadoop cluster on a toy problem, you may well find that it's faster to solve your toy problem on one desktop PC than a whole cluster, because it's a toy problem, and the gains only kick in when your data set is too big to fit on a single computer.
The new Threadripper got me thinking: Has this happened to somebody with just a multicore CPU? Is there software that performs better with 2 cores than with just one, and better with 4 cores than with 2, but substantially worse with 64? It could happen! Deadlocks, livelocks, weird inter-process communication issues where you have one process per core and every one of the 64 processes communicates with the other 63 via pipes? There could be software that has a badly optimised main thread, or a badly optimised work unit scheduler, and the limiting factor is single-thread performance of that scheduler that needs to distribute and integrate work units for 64 threads, to the point where the worker threads are mostly idling and only one core is at 100%.
I am not trying to blame any programmer if this happens. Most likely such software was developed back when quad-core CPUs were a new thing, or even back when there were multi-CPU-socket mainboards, and the developer never imagined that one day there would be Threadrippers on the consumer market. Programs from back then, built for Windows XP, could still run on Windows 10 or 11.
In spite of all this, I suspect that this kind of problem is quite rare in practice. It requires software that spawns one thread or one process per core, but which is deoptimised for more cores, maybe written under the assumption that users have for two to six CPU cores, a user who can afford a Threadripper, and needs a Threadripper, and a workload where the problem is noticeable. You wouldn't get a Threadripper in the first place if it made your workflows slower, so that hypothetical user probably has one main workload that really benefits from the many cores, and another that doesn't.
