Ricardo Montalban's personal customized 1977 Chrysler Cordoba.
Montalban's personal Cordoba was customized by Chrysler designer Bob Marcks. Marcks wanted to create a car that Montalban could drive and fit in in Malibu or Beverly Hills. The first thing Marcks wanted to do was eliminate the vinyl roof. Then a custom two-tone paint job and custom wire wheels were added. The "Corinthian" leather was also custom, and all the imitation wood was removed and replaced with brushed silver. After, Montalban's use for a couple of years, the Cordoba went back to Chrysler. Chrysler allowed its designer, Bob Marcks, to buy the Cordoba from Chrysler for $5000. He later sold it to another fellow Chrysler designer who eventually sold it to the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Montalban's Cordoba was on display in the museum until it closed in 2016. What did Chrysler give Montalban after the Cordoba? We aren't exactly sure, but he did get a slightly customized Imperial in 1981.
From the early 1980s on, as the Cordoba was beginning its demise, Montalban started pitching other Chrysler products on TV. In 1987, Montalban was appearing on "Late Night with David Letterman." Letterman was teasing Montalban about the Corinthian leather. After some prodding, Montalban admitted it meant nothing. Then Letterman said, "I bet you sold a lot of Cordobas, did you actually drive one of those?" Almost before Letterman could finish, "Always" answered Montalban firmly.
