did y’all know that my summer of buddie event was literally copied and turned into a buckt*mmy event and i didn’t say anything about it because I understand that sometimes other fans take inspiration in other fandom events? but did y’all know the event is like literally a perfect copy of mine? well, now that we’re talking about “plagiarism” and “copying” and accusing fans of shit i thought i’d just let you know that this did happen :)
why would you ask ChatGPT to write shitty 8th grade reading level fanfic about something you actually care about and toe a whole bunch of ethical lines, when you could instead ask it to write only insane shit that no human being in their right mind would ever voluntarily create themselves
(yes the answers generated for all of these supremely fucked in the most chaotic way possible. yes, I still think even this use of AI has some ethical complexities to it.)
I absolutely love Icemav so I made a fan edit of them, this song fits them so well!

being like, a way more optimistic of person than i am, but the way people are so paranoid about and obsessed with having their work stolen and thats why “they /need/ copyright”. lol.
So far I’ve been keeping all my ocs living in this one town in Equestria I made up (a coastal town called Maple Leaf) and only just now have I considered making multiple towns or at least other areas lol. My original setup would be the main, easy-going town of Maple Leaf, with cottages and shops interspersed along the coast. Then a more urban area with modest skyscrapers and such towards the inland (but now that I think about it, it could also just be further down the coast.) and then maybe even have some neighborhoods in the sky, like on clouds like Cloudsdale but near the mountains/hills that encircle Maple Leaf. Idk for sure, as I’m like the most indecisive person alive, but it is fun to brainstorm :)
when it comes to the defense of fanfiction, i dislike remarks along the lines of "the divine comedy is just fanfic!!" not because i look down on fanfic, but because i want to acknowledge the unique merits of fanfic, because i love fanfic and fanfic authors and transformative fandom. every story is in conversation with other stories, but every story is not fanfic. there is always going to be overlap of course, there are similarities between why people create and enjoy fanfic and why they create and enjoy other forms of literature, as well as similarities in content and style, but this type of flippant response is SO common now and has done way more harm than good. you don't need to justify your love of fanfic by erasing what's special about modern transformative fandom, the solution is not to broaden the category. instead, stop letting people use the term fanfic as a pejorative. it's their loss, not yours.
Not my older brother introducing me to even MORE genAI bullshit that he got sucked into that draws him away from things he's genuinely super talented at creating himself
RE: Amazon's Lord of the Rings series:
I think this excellent video from Sarah z -- about the way that right-wing backlash against certain media properties makes it nearly impossible to have genuine conversations about them, because you can't talk about them in good faith without inadvertently adding to the right-wing dogpile of people criticizing them for racist sexist reasons -- conveys pretty much everything I should probably say about it ladjflksdfs.
Sarah Z makes a great point that this kind of vicious right-wing backlash often tends to deliberately focus media properties that are mediocre because of other reasons (like boring corporate mandates) and claim they're mediocre because of diversity. Right-wingers intentionally ignore properties that have diversity and are Good, and intentionally ignore the billions of shows/movies that aren't "woke" but are also similarly mediocre.
Because right-wingers don't actually care about the "quality of art" unless they can use that as a weapon to attack the people they hate.
I don't think ai images and art have any real value tbh. Like do you do your thing if you wanna create Hot MILFs in your Area but using ChatGPT or whatever I don't care, but i genuinely don't think it should be grouped with traditional or digital art.
making a separate post for this but, re: my tags on the Fables post, I am actually wondering if "I would like to create [significant artistic work] for release into the public domain with no expectation of profit" would be a good proposal for an Artist Grant
“you want me to not have copyright on my own work? you want a big megacorp to just be able to take my work and make money on it, or making it so nobody will ever see it, leaving me entirely out of the loop, if they desire?”
