Funguary, Day 11 - Devil's Cigar 🍄

So I knew I wanted to draw a caterpillar smoking a giant mushroom, inspired by both the name and Alice in Wonderland - the original idea was simpler than the final drawing, but this was a case where I just kept going and building it up as I went along, and this time, I'm glad I did lol The initial sketch was drawn using the 55 degrees Sailor fude fountain pen, which was not a great choice in retrospect, and then the only Copic Ciao alcohol marker colours I used were several brown shades for the mushroom; then the mushroom was glazed with Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils, followed by using the coloured pencils to add smoke; then I had a lot of fun using the black coloured pencil, first to add dirt on the outside of the mushroom, which then turned into smoke and shadows, and finally demonic visions in the smoke lol; Posca white paint markers were used for the light edges and cracks in the mushroom, though the white leans too cool for the warm colours again.

In 2014 I asked my parents for a 72 pack of copic ciaos and again in 2024 and each time they got me other things (which is actually fine and more than ok bc gifts are gifts and so many many ppl get nothing! I love my blanket and my tiny jewelry box) but I still REALLY WANT THOSE DAMN MARKERS.

and now because I’m so anxious and untethered I’m fixated on getting them. I’m in marker related brain prison. and I know intellectually it’s stupid bc? I have other expenses. I need contacts, a space heater, pay my storage unit, etc. I’m just bummed that they went up in price and now it’s not worth it to get them :(((

How I Use Sketchbooks

I approach art and design processes in a pretty methodical and structured way. In the past, it was difficult for me to consistently use a sketchbook because I would draw a few random things in it, feel unsatisfied, and then abandon it. I'm not very good at doodling and sketching because I always feel there needs to be some sort of purpose for the completed art. Eventually I thought of a few ways that sketchbooks could work for me where I'm motivated to use it regularly and finish it.

Row 1: A blue square sketchbook from Handbook Journal Co. I got a couple of these because I really liked the travel size, and I could have a 1-page square composition or a long rectangular spread. I also liked the feel of the cloth-bound covers. I decided that if I were to keep sketchbooks, each one would need a theme. When I took a trip to Germany with some friends in 2018, I took a lot of photos everywhere we went, and then filled the sketchbook cover to cover. I enjoyed having people look through it and telling them the stories behind each page. More from that sketchbook here.

Row 2: An olive green square sketchbook from Handbook Journal Co (with bonus cat). This one would be filled with mushrooms and fungi that I encountered on hikes (at least the ones I could identify). I love fungi, and I think they look really cool! More from that sketchbook here.

Row 3: A beautifully illustrated sketchbook from Fox & Crow Studio / Viktoria Landers. When I am planning out ideas for illustrations or anything art-related, they're usually lists of point-form notes with some initial rough scribbles. I come up with new ideas pretty frequently (usually at 2 AM), so I will get a lot of use out of this book.

For the Handbooks I used pigma microns 005 to 02 for the lines, and copic ciao markers for colour. Also, now that I'm getting into more cross stitching, I might make some fancy book jackets for them.

I decided to add color and I'm really happy with it. The markers I used were cheap markers I bought from five below and one copic ciao marker.

I'm feeling really inspired now so I'm gonna continue to practice the comic book style since I love it so much.

And because I want an excuse to draw Nightwing and Batman an ungodly amount of times.
