so a while back i made a sorta-timeline of h2o's first season, and i even went as far as to study up on the australian school year, and then from that - i made a guess of when the school year started in s2 based off the full moon in the first ep (february 5th)

which then led me to guess the first days of school in the eras of season 1 and season 2 (february 6th and february 4th respectively) just because

and then when i looked at it again, i realized that meant rikki seriously started beef with not just zane, but also miriam and lewis in like the first week of school

rikki stole zane's spark plug because he was a pig. she and miriam were hostile to each other in ep two. and then in that same ep, lewis says he and rikki had their "issues" in the past, which ? i want to know more

like. what did rikki and lewis even do to get on each other's bad side? does that have to do with why cleo was so awkward, when rikki asked how she knew her name?

so anyways, the girls' anniversary is on valentine's day 💕 love that for them

I'm thinking about the implications again.

The numbers that the hive mind performs aren't random. Both the lyrics and the choreography will often boil down to to one purpose: to cause pain. (Pokey is ruthless.)

Sometimes it's physical, and that's easy to spot. The cops spend half of their song just kicking and pushing people to the ground. Join Us And Die literally ends with Ted getting beat up.

And when the choreography doesn't allow for it, the lyrics are specifically trying to elicit an emotional response. The hive uses Alice to torment Bill. He's watching someone he loves die in front of him. It does the same for Charlotte.

Okay, the hive gets a kick out watching people suffer. That's not new information. But the implications...

Look at Inevitable. It's a pretty significant shift from the rest of the numbers. Whereas those seem tailored for pain and fear, Inevitable seems to be comforting? Just look.

Paul walks out, and the first thing he does is hug Emma. Which doesn't seem significant at first, but think: Did Bill get that same courtesy?

Alice's first line is meant to taunt Bill. Paul's is almost consolatory; " Emma / I'm sorry / you lost." I won't dissect this completely, the theory is that this first line is genuine. Paul is actually sorry that their plan failed.

And when you take a look at the choreography, it becomes clear that it's a lot kinder than the other songs.

We see Paul waltzing with Emma and kissing her hands. And even though he's not letting her get away, he's not trying to hurt her. He's not even trying to intimidate her. He's shown more than once bending down--getting on her level, like you would to a child--as opposed to towering over her.

The lyrics aren't messing with her either. Whereas Sam is manipulative and Alice is spiteful, Paul's lyrics are reassuring.

"I'm still the man you trust," is a lot different than "Don't you twust me?" when you get right down to it. It carries with it a connotation of 'I'm okay, and you will be too.'

"What if I told you I made it?" actively contradicts the 'I killed your loved one' narrative that Alice used with Bill.

It's not like Emma is buying any of it. She's still terrified. Paul doesn't need to hurt her or taunt her in order to scare her, just singing was enough. But it's clear that he's not trying to.

The hive mind gets a kick out of watching people suffer. Emma is the leading lady. You'd think that she's the one who should have the most brutal song. But she just doesn't. It seems like her song is trying to be the kindest.

We know it's implied that once they get infected, people are still conscious inside their musical doppelgängers (source: the line "your own body is your front row seat" as well as Sam breaking through its control long enough to say "Charlotte" before falling back under).

I think Paul was conscious during Inevitable. I think he knew that they weren't escaping this. I think he knew he was eventually going to kill Emma, and there was nothing he could do about it. But I think he didn't want her to suffer.

Instead, I think he resolved to give her as kind a death as he could. He would lie. He'd tell her he was happy and that she was safe. He'd be as gentle as the hive mind allowed. She was running out of time, so he'd love her with every second they had left.

Top 5 fav HOTD characters?

alicent - I think she gets a lot of bad faith interpretations and people like to project on her to what kind of character they think she should be (cersei 2.0) when she's actually perfect the way that she is. her character has a ton of nuance and a lot of grey areas that is so so fun to dissect and analyze. she is a pandora's box of contradictions and has walls of steel up (that turn into dust when she's around rhaenyra) and is my pathetic meow meow

rhaenyra - I like both of her interpretations from milly and emma's acting. millys rhaenyra was more mischievous and playful, with an undertone of burning envy towards her male counterparts that get away with things that she can only dream of. emma's rhaenyra is a bit more severe and stoic with walls up around her (which also melt down when they share a scene with olivia's alicent). I like emma's version of rhaenyra because it's a rhaenyra I can see leading a civil war

daemon - he also gets a lot of bad faith interpretations or gets romanticized by the fandom into being different than who he is. he's a very complicated character who is also a giant ball of messed up targaryen values with a touch of envy towards his family who he loves but also pushes away. I wish we could see more of his interactions with baela and rhaena because I want to see how he navigates fatherhood to two teenage girls like viserys had with rhaenyra

aegon - on the surface i shouldn't like this character but tom plays him so well that he ends up being just as entertaining as viserys was. he is a complete moron who also has random insightful epiphany's about his life and the impending war that makes him absolutely delightful to watch. the writers and tom give him so much more nuance than he was given in the books and I appreciate that (this horrible person with no self-control, but hey look at him boop his dragon). also love his dynamic with alicent

helaena and alys rivers - I love both of these characters and what they bring to the show but wish we could have been given a more subtle hint of their talents or magic instead of it being shoved in our face in the last few episodes. I wanted them to speak more in riddles like helaena did last season and for alys to be more of an enigma and rumored witch who might drug her guests than an outright confirmed sorceress. helaena and aegons interactions are also hilarious

Rübezahl

Rübezahl is the mountain spirit and forest demon of the Giant Mountains between Silesia and Bohemia. Numerous legends and folk tales are associated with him.

The origin of the name Rübezahl is not clear. Some sources say that it is a compound of the ancient personal name Riebe and the Middle High German word Zagel (tail), which could explain depictions of Rübezahl as a caudate demon.

A legend tells a different story how Rübezahl got his name: According to this story, Rübezahl kidnaps the king's daughter Emma, ​​whom he wants to marry, into his underground kingdom. He tries to satisfy her longing for her home with turnips that she can transform into any shape she wants. But the turnips wither. Finally, the woman promises him her hand if he tells her the number of turnips in the field. If he fails, he has to let her go. The mountain spirit immediately sets to work. Halsin and Minthara weren't always mutually exclusive

Even though you can recruit both of them, in the game it looks like a funny bug. I guess this is what's left of the original idea. It was previously planned not only letting you have them at the same time, but also that they would interact in the party like other companions.

In the audio files, you can find lines of their reactions to each other's deaths. I don't know if these are triggered or not. They are both so bugged that sometimes I can hardly tell which is the cut content and which is the bug.

It's kind of funny that Halsin would be so sad.

I recently completed Halsin's quest with Mintara in my party. In the scene by the lake, when Halsin entered the portal, Minthara said "He made it. Now let's just hope he survives what's on the other side"

Actually this is exactly the same line as Tav's.

Halsin also share many lines with Tav and other origins. Most of them are unused. But in this case the line is not only voiced by Emma Gregory (Minthara's VA), it's triggered.

There is another interesting line. In Moonrise Towers, when Ketheric punishes Mintara for a failure in the grove and sends her to the dungeon, the player can choose not to interfere and leave the location without helping her. In this case one of the characters in your party will remind you that she can be saved as a potential companion. I was wondering if Halsin would say anything. And he did. "Minthara may prove useful to us, should we wish to save her…"

This isn't cut content. This isn't new content added with patches. It's in the game since the release. And this line works. Moreover, this is his personal line.

If they implement the dialogue with an ultimatum it will be nonsense. I mean, first he suggests to save her from the Absolute as a useful ally, and then in the camp he will say that it's the right choice to kick her back under the Absolute control. It's even hard to blame the character for such contradiction. Rather, it's just a stupid limit set by the script.

Next. In Act 3 if you make one of them to go up on the clown stage, the other one will approve.

There is also an unused flag for Act 3 in the game files with the description "Orin pretended to kill Halsin during the Minthara abduction campnight." Which means in Act 3 they were both in the party.

You can see what the abduction of Mintara looks like in this video. Only instead of Halsin, Jaheira is mentioned here.

Maybe there are other confirmations that I do not know about, that they were not mutually exclusive before. But that's enough for me.

They were both not originally planned as companions. Their roles were expanded much later. Most likely, Larian didn't have time to polish their content, so scissors were used. This is why their content seems so unfinished compared to others. Except for Wyll, probably. That's why they are so buggy.

I suppose the reason they are both mutually exclusive is because it is the easiest solution when you have a deadline on the horizon. Just easiest as "it's fine for a companion to just hang out at the camp". Otherwise, you need dialogs, animations, scripts, etc. And you also need to make sure that it will work with everything else. This is time and resources. But this doesn't mean that it's impossible to fix anything later.

I faintly hope that the defenetive edition will have the option to recruit them both.

And I really hope that in the future Larian will look at the games of their colleagues from BioWare (who made the original BG). I mean games from better times than now. The companions below will show you how much they "loved" each other. Not all of them became friends in the end. But nevertheless, we saved the world. Together.

Emma keeps control of herself constantly. She knows her father is irrational but she never contradicts him so she can keep the peace. She resents John Knightley for not being able to do the same, even though he's right!

Then, finally, she's away from her father and supposed to be having fun at Box Hill. First Mr. Weston ruined everything by inviting the stupid Eltons and everyone is kind of hot and miserable and Emma messes up. But is it surprising when she always holds herself to this super high standard? She let her guard down for a minute and she tripped.

And then Mr. Knightley gets so mad at her and I understand why, but it's kind of annoying to be told, "You need to be perfect because other people look up to you." That is so much pressure on a 21 year old! And she's been the mistress of Hartfield since she was like 12.

Anyway, I empathize with Emma.

Re-reading a book I first read as a teen, following a protag who's anorexic, and there's this moment of cognitive dissonance I always liked:

The protag's stepmother is weighting her because she's in recovery from anorexia. The protag asks to take her little sister out for ice cream. Stepmom says no, not today, and protag tells us is because she thinks the little sister is fat, only she won't say it out loud.

And in-story, it's a great moment. It's a very good way of showing how insidious diet culture is, that the stepmom is staring at its worst consequences right in the face, worried her stepdaughter doesn't weight enough and is starving herself, and in the same breath, she's worried her nine-year-old daughter weights too much and should eat less.

Except.

Except.

The dissonance exists in a meta level as well. Because protag goes out of her way to point out Emma, the little sister, is not fat. She is chubby. She's healthy. She's not actually fat, it's just her mom who thinks she's fat.

And it's. It's fucking amazing, isn't it?. In a book talking about anorexia, in a scene pointing out how diet culture says it's worried about health, when really it's only worried about looks, while the characters are playing out the ridiculous contradictions intrinsic to fatphobia........ the author is being fatphobic herself. The author is falling in the same trap she's set up for her characters.

So what if Emma had been fat?. If she had been fat, would this have been any less ridiculous?. If she had been fat, suddenly it gets ssssoooo much harder to argue it's not healthy to try to shrink your body?. Emma doesn't need to engage in diet culture... but only because Emma is not fat.

The redacting of certain place names (—shire, — Street) is accurate to lots of old novels, where you will see it from time to time. I think it was a deliberate omission to avoid libel accusations if they accidentally invoked somewhere or someone real, or to also avoid confusing people if it contradicted real life. I used it here both to mimic the style, and also because that way didn't have to pick streets or regions lol.

The 'cut direct' was a social nuke and Kaz has balls of steel for using it on an older man who is his social superior 💀 if you very deliberately stared at and then blanked a previous acquaintance who had greeted you, it severed a relationship or acquaintance forever and could also make people turn on the person being cut. Pekka could have challenged him to a duel for it, but sensibly I think he saw the lapse in logic in giving a pistol to a soldier who holds you responsible for his brother's death and letting him shoot at you

A reticule is one of those dumb tiny handbags that regency ladies had

Governesses were in a uniquely vulnerable position. Not genteel enough for the family while not technically a servant, they tended to be isolated. While they were ofc not comparable to what Inej canonically goes through, many were abused by the families they worked for, rivalled the mothers for their children's affection, and some were harassed and abused by husbands or male visitors. There's a reason Jane Fairfax does not want to be one in Emma.

The navy lists are a publication that, unsurprisingly, list all the men, their ranks, and their ships currently trundling around on campaign. Kaz checks them to see who is still alive and to backseat drive campaigns (what's new!) and Wylan waits on tenterhooks for him to find Jesper. Which he always does because he was already looking for him.

Married couples did not tend to call one another by their given names, at least not in company; Nina and Matthias do it because they have a fond disrespect for one another. Or Nina does anyway and it's rubbed off on Matthias.

Although Kaz and Inej are comparatively very young, twenty six is pushing it for the 'marriageability' of young women; Anne Elliot was twenty seven and was considered to have lost the 'bloom' of her youth, so she is being bourne down upon a bit.

The money concerns in Persuasion— landed gentry losing money and soldiers becoming 'new' money in the war via prize money, but still being looked down upon by the old nobility— are kinda reflected through Kaz and Jesper.

(to be so honest I do not quite understand how the regency economy worked but I figured that like, no one else reading this does either, unless ur a regency specialist. if you are, sorry. how's academia?)

I think we're actually not quite yet at the peak of the 'scandal sheet' Bridgerton-Lady-Whistledown craze, but I couldn't possibly deprive Kaz and Inej of their fishmarket wife gossip habit in any universe.

I also hate Lord Byron. Next!

Nina, Matthias, and Inej are not at the Wesper wedding because regency weddings were super tiny affairs that only had v close / local family and friends at them

I think the circumstances of Kaz and Jordie having been minor landed gentry having to join the navy out of necessity may be a bit of a stretch but... Well I had to think of something to replicate Kaz's backstory with. The easier solution would have been for them to marry rich but I can see Jordie thinking that trying to marry Kaz 'Cut Direct' Rietveld off to a Duchess might be a bit tough

A trousseau was the collection of clothes that women bought before they were married; it was an expected thing, to send brides off with new clothes. Nina and Mrs Ghafa (and Jesper) are a lot more interested in this than poor Inej is lol.

The made up house names are entirely inside jokes with myself. Geldings references horses but is actually a play on the Geldstraat, Crawley means 'clearing frequented by crows', Stavewell is a play on the Stave where Tante Heleen and the Menagerie are, and I think Trasselwood is fairly obvious lol.
