The Importance of Contractor Liability Coverage for Ontario-Based Businesses
As an Ontario-based business owner, it is crucial to understand the importance of contractor liability coverage for your operations. Contractor liability coverage, also known as contractor insurance, provides protection in the event that you or your employees are held liable for property damage, bodily injury, or other claims while working on a project. Without adequate coverage, your business could be at serious financial risk in the event of a lawsuit.
Contractor liability coverage is designed to protect you against the unexpected costs that can arise from accidents or mistakes on the job. For example, if a client's property is damaged during a construction project, or if a subcontractor is injured while working on your behalf, liability coverage can help cover the costs of legal defense, settlements, or judgments. This can help ensure that your business can continue to operate smoothly, even in the face of unforeseen circumstances.
In Ontario, contractor liability coverage is especially important due to the province's strict regulations and legal requirements for businesses operating in the construction industry. Without adequate coverage, your business may be subject to fines, penalties, or even lawsuits that could threaten your company's financial stability. By investing in contractor liability coverage, you can protect your business from these risks and establish a strong foundation for long-term success.
It is important to note that contractor liability coverage is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Different businesses may have different needs when it comes to insurance, depending on the size and scope of their operations. That's why it's important to work with an experienced insurance provider who can help you tailor a policy that meets your specific requirements.
When choosing a contractor insurance policy in Ontario, there are several key factors to consider. These may include the type of work your business performs, the size of your operation, and any specialized risks that may be unique to your industry. By working closely with your insurance provider to assess these factors, you can ensure that your business is adequately protected against potential liabilities.
In addition to protecting your business from financial risks, contractor liability coverage can also help you build trust and credibility with clients. When potential clients see that your business is fully insured, they are more likely to feel confident in your ability to handle their projects responsibly and professionally. This can give you a competitive advantage in the market and help you attract new business opportunities.
Ultimately, contractor liability coverage is a critical component of risk management for Ontario-based businesses in the construction industry. By investing in the right insurance policy, you can protect your business from potential liabilities, comply with legal requirements, and build a strong reputation with clients. If you haven't already done so, now is the time to explore your options for contractor insurance and take the necessary steps to safeguard your business for the future.

Fundraiser to fix flood damage at my parents house
hi, so i've never had to make a fundraising post but unfortunately my parents' house just suffered major storm damage that insurance is not going to cover at all because the roof was "in disrepair"
to summarize, on the night of december 17th there was a huge storm in the NJ area that dumped around 4 inches of rain in a very short time. my parent's were in the middle of getting their roof replaced, but unfortunately the contractor was going extremely slowly. this meant the roof was unprotected and essentially blew off during the storm, letting water ran into the ceiling and down the walls. the ceilings and all the drywall and insulation are shot and need to be replaced, and the roof especially needs to be replaced ASAP. they'll probably need a new contractor. unfortunately, the person they were using before did not have any kind of insurance coverage so his insurance will also not cover anything.
this is going to cost a lot of money and my parents have already been having a lot of financial difficulties the past few years. any donations are appreciated, even if it's a dollar. thank you!
link to the donations:
#donations#fundraisers#i just feel so awful and i want to help how i can. and im so angry at the insurance company lol#this is an old house too like the section this happened in was built 1890 or something#so that's not helping#anyway thank you thank you thank you

Shannen Doherty’s Untimely Death Sparks Important Conversations About Healthcare Access And Equity
By Janice Gassam Asare
Shannen Doherty, the actress best known for her roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed has died after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 53. In a 2015 statement to People magazine, the actress revealed her breast cancer diagnosis, stating that she was “undergoing treatment” and that she was suing a firm and its former business manager for causing her to lose her health insurance due to a failure to pay the insurance premiums. According to reports, in a lawsuit Doherty shared that she hired a firm for tax, accounting, and investment services, among other things, and that part of their role was to make her health insurance premium payments to the Screen Actors Guild; Doherty claimed that their failure to make the premium payments in 2014 caused her health insurance to lapse until the re-enrollment period in 2015. When Doherty went in for a checkup in March of 2015, the cancer was discovered, at which time it had spread. In the lawsuit, Doherty indicated that if she had insurance, she would have been able to get the checkup sooner—the cancer would have been discovered, and she could have avoided chemotherapy and a mastectomy.
Under the IRS, actors are often classified as independent contractors, which comes with its own set of challenges. Although it is unclear what Doherty’s situation was, for many independent contractors, obtaining health insurance can be difficult. Trying to get health insurance as an independent contractor can be a costly and convoluted process. A 2020 Actors’ Equity Association survey indicated that “more than 80% of nonunion actors and stage managers in California have been misclassified as independent contractors.” A 2021 research study revealed that self-employment (which is what independent contractors are considered to be) was associated with a higher likelihood of being uninsured.
Doherty’s tragic situation invites a larger conversation about healthcare access and equity in the United States. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as “Obamacare,” was signed into law in 2010 and revolutionized healthcare access in two distinct ways: “creating health insurance marketplaces with federal financial assistance that reduces premiums and deductibles and by allowing states to expand Medicaid to adults with household incomes up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level.” The ACA helped reduce the number of uninsured Americans and expanded healthcare access to those most in need. It also helped close gaps in coverage for different populations, including those with pre-existing health conditions, lower-income individuals, part-time workers, and those from historically excluded and marginalized populations.
Despite strides made through the ACA, healthcare access and equity are still persistent issues, especially within marginalized communities. Research from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) examining 2010-2022 data indicated that in 2022, non-elderly American Indian and Alaska Natives (AIAN) and Hispanic people had the greatest uninsured rates (19.1% and 18% respectively). When compared with their white counterparts, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI) and Black people also had higher uninsured rates at 12.7% and 10%, respectively. The Commonwealth Fund reported that between 2013 and 2021, “states that expanded Medicaid eligibility had higher rates of insurance coverage and health care access, with smaller disparities between racial/ethnic groups and larger improvements, than states that didn’t expand Medicaid.” It’s important to note that if a Republican president is elected, Project 2025, the far-right policy proposal document, seeks to upend Medicaid as we know it by introducing limits on the amount of time that a person can receive Medicaid.
When peeling back the layers to examine these racial and ethnic differences in more detail, the Brookings Institute noted in 2020 that the refusal of several states to expand Medicaid could be one contributing factor. One 2017 research study found that some underrepresented racial groups were more likely to experience insurance loss than their white counterparts. The study indicated that for Black and Hispanic populations, specific trigger events were more likely, as well as “socioeconomic characteristics” that were linked to more insurance loss and slower insurance gain. The study also noted that in the U.S., health insurance access was associated with employment and and marriage and that Black and Hispanic populations were “disadvantaged in both areas.”
Equity in and access to healthcare is fundamental, but bias is omnipresent. Age bias, for example, is a pervasive issue in breast cancer treatment. Research also indicates that racial bias is a prevalent issue—because the current guidelines in breast cancer screenings are based on white populations, this can lead to a delayed diagnosis for women from non-white communities. Our health is one of our greatest assets and healthcare should be a basic human right, no matter what state or country you live in. As a society, we must ensure that healthcare is available, affordable and accessible to all citizens. After all, how can a country call itself great if so many of its citizens, especially those most marginalized and vulnerable, don’t have access to healthcare?

@everything-but-the-not-natural hey, you want to play "how accurately can I predict Leverage?" (I've still only seen through "The Two Horse Job." So halfway through season 1.)
List of characters because I am SHIT at names:
- Nathan Ford, former insurance investigator and current hiest planner, son died after being denied insurance coverage for an experimental treatment
- Sophie Devereaux, professional chameleon (but only during crime/high stakes situations), clearly wants to get with Nathan
- Eliot Spencer, close combat expert (but dislikes guns), excellent cook, and (former?) horse girl
- Alec Hardison, tech expert and hacker
- Parker, thief, gymnast, and INSANE
- Jim Sterling, former rival to Nathan and current insurance investigator
So! Predictions:
- Eliot used to be military, probably Marines or other special forces. He presumably excelled at regular military fighting and got fast-tracked to black ops. (He may have gotten pulled into being a contractor after his official term of service ended.) I'm betting SOMETHING traumatic happened to cause his dislike of guns - if I had to guess, I'd say that he was ordered to kill (via sniper shot) someone who was using a human shield (most likely kids or someone Eliot cared about). Bonus points if the sniper target turned out to be not a villain, which Eliot could have figured out if he'd been closer to the action.
- He probably turned to crime to escape being chased by the military, to support himself, and possibly to find someone to protect him from all the enemies he made while serving whichever military/spooky government force he used to work for. He ABSOLUTELY feels guilty about all the harm he did in his Tragic Past (not everyone he fought/killed was evil, but I doubt he knew that then), but he won't let on about this until much later, after he's started to trust everyone. (Parker will just offer to blow his enemies up. Alec will want to hack them.)
- Eliot will 100% end up cooking for the team at some point. Probably frequently. There will probably be a funny scene where he throws out all of Parker's and Alec's shitty junk food and then aggressively cooks them something from scratch. With a shit-ton of vegetables minced into a sauce, because HOW ARE YOU TWO NOT DEAD ALREADY?!?!?
- Parker strikes me as a foster kid. Foster or group home after she fucking BURNED DOWN HER PARENTS' HOUSE, WTF PARKER. And of course, being in a place with OTHER troubled kids just taught her all sorts of tricks (on top of the ones she'd figured out by herself). At some point, she learned to use money as a way of keeping score of her success in life - possibly someone bullied her *specifically* because they had money and she didn't? In any case, her moral compass is "I do what I want, whatever's most fun in the moment, WHEE!" With her skills, this is TERRIFYING.
- She will ABSOLUTELY steal shit to try to make her teammates happy - things they mention they like or are nostalgic about. Eventually she'll learn to care about people and show affection WITHOUT first resorting to crime. (...but it will take a WHILE.)
- Alec is harder for me to pin down, partly because none of the episodes have focused on his backstory yet and partly because I can't identify with him as much. But SOMETHING drove him to not only *use* computers, but EXCEL at them. I'd guess he was a nerdy kid who liked computers, and then learned that coding/hacking was a way to escape an unpleasant real life. The more he learned about coding and hacking, the more he realized that he could change his real life by doing that...and thus his start in crime.
- He also learned to play a role pretty well (when he was an office worker for a job, and the flashback where he pretended to be a black celebrity). He's probably got a history of people expecting certain things from him (due to racial or economic status) and learning to either play to those expectations (and thus escape notice) or loudly call out how inaccurate those are to embarrass people into backing down (as he did when someone noticed he'd changed costumes in an elevator). This chameleon ability will continue to be useful.
- At some point, he'll probably pick up some more physical skills from Eliot and Parker, since right now he either works behind the scenes or as a distraction.
- Sophie can do flawless performances of any character, but ONLY IN HIGH PRESSURE SITUATIONS. She learned that *somewhere*, and I'm betting that when we find out where/when, it won't be pretty. I'd bet she was neglected or abused somehow, and playing different roles was the only way she could get what she needed to survive. (And if she was caught being a fake, she was punished somehow, so she learned that she had to be FLAWLESS.) But because she's used to using this skill in high stakes situations, she can't call it up the same way when the stakes are low - like an audition or a theatrical performance.
- We'll get to see more of her true (probably adorably awkward) personality - who she is when she isn't playing some flawlessly elegant beauty. When she's comfortable enough to relax like that around the team, THAT'S when Nathan will start to pick up that "oh shit, she likes me, this could be something REAL."
- Nathan used to be an insurance investigator for high value claims, but unlike his rival Jim Sterling, Nathan usually tried to FIX the situation instead of just screwing people over to save the company money. (For example, recovering stolen items instead of just saying "this was a conspiracy by the owner.") He thinks insurance companies should HELP people, and felt personally betrayed when his company refused to cover his son's medical care (I think someone mentioned that it involved an experimental treatment). He felt that the company should have covered his son's care - possibly that whatever loophole they used to deny care didn't apply, or just that "I've been such a good worker for so long, you should make an exception for me."
- Obviously that didn't happen, and the company was probably blunt to the point of nasty about it, which prompted him to quit. You've mentioned he has an ex-wife, so that may have been the last straw for her re their relationship. (First their son's illness, then the denied care/coverage, then using all their money to pay for their son's care, followed by their son's death.) When Nathan quit his - presumably well-paid - insurance job in disgust/grief, she saw it as throwing away their only chance to get out of the debt they'd taken on. Cue a huge fight, followed by a nasty and bitter divorce. So he lost EVERYTHING all at once - his faith in his job, his son, his marriage, his financial security...no wonder he turned to alcohol to cope.
- The functional alcoholism WILL be a recurring theme. It's probably his biggest character flaw at the moment, which makes it an easy way for the writers to trip him up or have the team criticize him. When he starts to cut back on the alcohol, that will be a major turning point. (But he'll almost certainly relapse at a plot-critical point.)
- Jim Sterling implied that Nathan had a more prestigious position than he did at the Sleezy Insurance Company (even if they were doing similar jobs). I'm guessing there was some sort of internal competition, probably tied to how much money they saved Sleezy Co or to how many claims they could justify denying, and that Nathan always beat Jim. (Bonus points if the winner of the company's competition got some sort of prize - a large annual bonus, a raise, a better office, etc. Which obviously Jim wanted and Nathan took for granted.) Jim is petty and bitter as hell about this, so he's going to happily screw Nathan and team over WHENEVER POSSIBLE.

I'm going to just shout a PSA into the void:
If you are going to call your insurance company HAVE YOUR POLICY NUMBER WITH YOU.
Departments within an insurance company are so rigidly separated that each question you have is probably answered by a different department and the others LEGALLY can't tell you other things, even if they can find that answer (which they probably can't).
Insurance companies have third party contractors for stuff, those "departments" may be a whole different company. (Glass only auto claims and roadside assistance come to mind)
If you have questions about your coverage DO NOT TALK TO CLAIMS. The only way they find out is by FILING a claim on your policy. Talk to Policy Services or Customer Service.
If you have a friend who has questions about their insurance but is scared of the phone call, sit with them for support, don't call for them. The person on the phone can't tell you any of their info and lying about who you are to the insurance is a BIG NO.
I know it's confusing (and blindingly frustrating) but there are ways to make it slightly less of a headache.

Building Your Dream in Auckland: A Guide to Finding the Right Builder
Auckland, the City of Sails, is a vibrant metropolis with a growing population. This translates to a booming construction industry, with many Aucklanders seeking to build their dream homes. But with so many builders vying for your attention, how do you choose the right one to transform your vision into reality?
This guide explores the essential steps involved in finding the perfect builder for your Auckland home building project. We'll delve into the key considerations, from understanding the different types of builders to navigating the initial consultation.
Know Your Options: Home Builders vs. Building Contractors
The terms "home builder" and "building contractor" are often used interchangeably, but there can be subtle distinctions. Home builders typically specialise in residential projects, particularly new builds and custom homes. They may offer a more comprehensive service, including design assistance and project management. Building contractors, on the other hand, can handle a broader range of projects, including renovations, additions, and even commercial construction. They might focus more on the technical aspects of construction.
Understanding Your Needs & Budget
Before embarking on your builder search, take some time to clearly define your needs and budget. What kind of home are you envisioning? Single-story, multi-story, modern, or traditional? Consider the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you require, as well as any specific features you desire, such as a swimming pool or a home theater.
Equally important is establishing a realistic budget for your project. Factor in not just the construction costs but also the cost of the land (if you haven't purchased it yet), permits, architectural plans, and any unforeseen expenses. Having a clear budget will help you find builders who specialise in your desired price range.
Research & Recommendations
The internet is a powerful tool for researching potential builders in Auckland. Look for companies with established websites showcasing their previous projects and outlining their services. Online review platforms can offer valuable insights from past clients, providing honest feedback on a builder's quality of work, communication style, and overall customer service.
Recommendations from friends, family, and colleagues who have recently built homes in Auckland can also be invaluable. Their firsthand experiences can provide a unique perspective on the builder's performance.
The Initial Consultation
Once you have shortlisted a few builders, it's time to schedule initial consultations. This is your opportunity to get to know the builder, assess their approach, and determine if they are a good fit for your project. Some key questions to ask during the consultation include:
Experience: How many years of experience do they have building homes in Auckland? Do they have experience with projects similar to yours?
Licenses & Insurance: Are they fully licensed and insured? It's crucial to ensure they have the necessary certifications and liability coverage to protect your investment.
References: Can they provide references from past clients? Talking to satisfied customers can give you peace of mind.
Communication Style: How will they communicate with you throughout the project? Do they prioritise open communication and regular updates?
Project Timeline & Budget: Can they provide a realistic timeline for completion and a detailed estimate of the costs involved?
Contract Review: Don't be afraid to ask questions about the contract and ensure you understand all the terms and conditions before signing.
Building a Collaborative Partnership
Finding the right builder is akin to finding the right partner for a significant life event. Look for a builder who listens attentively to your vision, offers creative solutions, and respects your budget. Remember, a good builder will be transparent, reliable, and committed to exceeding your expectations.

Understanding the Essentials of Contractor General Liability Insurance
From on-site risks to probable legal obligations, contractors face an extensive number of challenges in the fast-paced world of trucking businesses. In this post, we look into the essentials of Contractor General Liability Insurance, delivering insights into the coverage it provides and why it is important for contractors.
Defining Contractor General Liability Insurance:
Known by its other name, Commercial General Liability (CGL) Insurance, Contractor General Liability Insurance is a comprehensive policy created to shield contractors from a variety of liabilities that may arise during their operations. It covers a variety of situations and extends beyond on-site mishaps to protect contractors from financial liabilities related to property damage, personal injury, and other issues.
Key Components of Coverage:
Bodily Injury Liability: Covers medical expenses, legal fees, and potential settlements in the event of injuries to third parties on the job site.
Property Damage Liability: Addresses costs related to damage to a client's property or third-party assets during construction operations.
Completed Operations Coverage: Protects contractors from liability for issues arising after the project is completed, such as faulty construction leading to property damage or injury.
Advertising and Personal Injury: Extends coverage to advertising and personal injury claims, including protection against allegations of slander, libel, or copyright infringement.
Medical Payments: Provides coverage for minor injuries occurring on the job site, facilitating settlement of medical expenses without resorting to legal action.
Importance of Business Liability Insurance Coverage:
For contractors, business liability insurance coverage is a strategic investment. It acts as a financial safety net, ensuring that the costs associated with unexpected events do not jeopardize the financial stability of the contracting business. From legal fees to potential settlements, this coverage is a fundamental aspect of risk management in the construction industry.
Mitigating Risks with Commercial Truck Insurance:
In addition to on-site risks, contractors often engage in transportation activities, requiring the use of commercial trucks. Understanding the importance of Commercial Truck Insurance is paramount for contractors involved in the movement of equipment, materials, and personnel.
Auto Liability Coverage:Protects against bodily injury and property damage caused by accidents involving company vehicles, including trucks used for transportation.
Cargo Liability Coverage:Safeguards against potential damage or loss of transported cargo during transit, addressing risks associated with the transportation aspect of contracting operations.
Cost Considerations: Commercial Truck Insurance:While essential for mitigating transportation-related risks, contractors must also consider the cost implications. Balancing comprehensive coverage with affordability is crucial, and a tailored insurance solution can meet these dual requirements.
Partnering for Protection:
In the complex landscape of construction, partnering with a reliable insurance provider is key. A strategic alliance ensures that contractors have access to tailored solutions that address the unique risks they face – from on-site accidents to transportation-related liabilities. The right insurance partner becomes a critical asset in fortifying the business against uncertainties.
Conclusion: A Proactive Approach to Success
Contractors navigating the intricacies of the construction industry must adopt a proactive approach to risk management. Contractor General Liability Insurance, coupled with Commercial Truck Insurance, forms a robust shield against potential liabilities. By understanding the essentials of these coverages and partnering with Southwestern Insurance Services, contractors can focus on their core competencies with the confidence that they are safeguarded against the unexpected in this dynamic industry.

👻 Halloween 🎃
Company A responded to me two weeks ago that they were still figuring the supervisor position out. I give up at this point. The hiring date is in two weeks, I passed up a couple pet sits in hopes of getting it. The last message was that they were doing in person Interviews, but no word on what round they were on or word on the last candidate they wanted.
I have gone full force into pet sitting and doing what I can to market myself. I’m waiting on my business cards to hand out on walks, made flyers to hang up, and have been posting on social media.
I’m on pet sit #3 and have three more booked. I will be raising my rates in the new year as I’ll have some solid reviews at that point.
M and I discussed it and if business picks up enough, I will be going back to school in April and keeping the pet sitting only. His job is covering all our bills, so my income would be for savings. It’s going to significantly delay moving out, but after discussing it with the roommates, they are supportive and not in a rush (seriously so thankful for them).
I was offered some more 1099 jobs (but honestly, if im gonna do a 1099, Rover is much better bang for my buck) and offered a really bad job for really awful pay. They did a mean switcheroo when I got there and had me interview for a totally different position that needed to be filled asap.
Social work in Florida is frustrating. I’m not sure if it’s like this everywhere now or just here. So many case management jobs have moved to independent contractor work. Personal vehicle usage, no mileage reimbursement, putting clients in your car and more expensive insurance coverage.
I honestly don’t know why I didn’t get some of the other jobs I interviewed for, but I think it’s because I’m new to the area and they’re worried I don’t know the resources. (They asked very specific questions about this).
Anyway. Here’s some photos.

Why did they discontinue your drug plan? Are you still on Medicare?
Turning this into a Medicare Explanation Thing since a lot of people don't know, feel free to save this if you/someone you know is waiting on SSI/SSDI case or thinking about it. Medicare comes in 5 separate parts because why not make disabled people jump through a bunch of complex unnecessary stuff.
Part A is hospital, covering specifically hospital bills not regular outpatient appointments. Part B is medical insurance which is your primary Dr and everything outpatient. When you get on disability they will give you Part A and/or Part B. If you have both they call it Original Medicare. Original Medicare also only covers 80% of the cost of everything, you have to pay 20% out of pocket and they don't have a limit meaning there's not a point where you stop paying the 20%. Oh and Original Medicare doesn't cover vision, dental, or hearing.
Part D is prescription drug coverage. They usually do not immediately put you on this because it costs extra, but also if you fail to sign up for it and then sign up several months after getting Medicare you will be penalized with an extra cost for the rest of the time that you have Medicare (yay!). Part D is not directly through the govt, it's private insurances like United Healthcare that are contracted with the govt. If you only have Original Medicare, none of your meds are covered and you have to pay full price.
Part C is also called Medicare Advantage, it is optional where you get Part A, B, and D all bundled together but you do this through private insurers like UHC and BCBS. Some of them do not charge a premium but some of them do, which is important because you would be paying for Original Medicare and then also potentially paying another premium for Part C. There is also the downside that Medicare is accepted by a LOT of places, but if you do Medicare Advantage you have to go through drs that that insurer covers. That may/may not be an issue depending on where you live. Upside is it may cost less (because they often have limits on how much you pay before they cover 100%) or cover more things than Medicare.
Last one is Medigap which is a separate plan (that you also pay for and get penalized if you don't sign up in time) that helps pay for your deductible. The Original Medicare deductible is $200-something for 2023 meaning you have to pay that amount before Medicare even bothers covering 80%.
So for my specific circumstance, I still have Original Medicare and there's no issue with my govt disability payments either. I was auto-enrolled for Part D because I qualified for Extra Help (basically I am Extra Poor), but for some reason UHC gave me drug insurance for a state I don't live in. I called to correct it and they told me it was fine and they would just switch me to the correct state, except the contractor actually just cancelled the plan entirely without telling me that's what they were doing and also without signing me up for a new plan. Which I found out when I went to pick up from the pharmacy. If I did not qualify for Extra Help, which has Special Enrollment Periods, I would have had to go 4 months without drug insurance until Open Enrollment in October...I just lucked out so instead of waiting til Oct I only have to wait til next month.
#disability pride month#cripple punk#cripplepunk#medicare#disability#this is the bare bones of it too...not even talking about dual wielding Medicare/Medicaid#they send you basically a D&D player's handbook sized 'pamphlet' explaining it all#ask#anonymous
