Whew, it may still be February, but it is SPRING in the city and my eyes and nose can feel it with every persistent sneeze 😵‍💫🤧. It'll only get worse as March approaches...annoyingly itchy. I'm armed to the teeth with claritin, inhaler, nebulizer. 🙈

After much discussion with @themiseryandcompany , the ✨️Elphie blog to my Glinda💕 blog, I decided to post this lil collection of snzcanons. 💚💗 Thank you, Miele for the inspo! Please check out her BEAUTIFULLY written Wick/ed fics and headcanons.

Oz Universe HC - Each culture in Oz has their own way of handling illness and maladies of the like. Vinkus, Gilikinese, Munchkinland, Quadling country. So some unconventional methods might be used when caretaking between students. Been meaning to brainstorm more on this because book and musical lore are SO different and the movie showcases a bit of both.

Elphaba/Elphie/Fae/Fabala (Book nicknames) -

- She is used to isolating and taking care of herself. Was isolated a lot when sick as a child to protect Nessarose, and in turn, told to stay away when Nessa was sick. Nessa would sneak books for her to read through the servants.

- And Fabala would in turn sneak in and read to little Nessa in secret.

- Not snz, but 'Fabala' is a nickname used by Nessa in the book. In canon, it's dimuntive of Aelphaba, kind of like the name Billy/William. MY personal headcanon divergence is that baby Nessa couldn't fully pronounce Elphaba...so Fabala stuck. 🥺💚

- Allergic to Milk flower pollen just like Nessa, just not at severely. Nessarose headcanons on this reblog.

- Nose gets darker green when irritated, rather than red when raw, same with her fever flush. She hates this.

- Has made glass break and sent things flying with unrestrained sneezes.

- Silently stifles as SHE was deeply stifled and stunted as a child. Frex indoctrinated the idea within her early on that her sneezes were too loud and too dangerous to those around her.

- Harsh deeper vocal sneezes. Sudden. Not much build up. Three syllabled.

- EHT'shuh! ER'HHT'Shew!

- Elphie scared Glinda the first time that she caught a nasty cold, couldn't stifle anymore and let out a loud sneeze while in the dormitory.

- "Sweet Oz!...How can such a thunderocious sound come from someone who's always so alooficated?"

- Even with stifles, it's a hit or miss that something will go wrong. During the first day of a cold, she might try to attend some classes. But say...a sudden repeated stifled fit in an alchemy class?...it could turn disasterous. She bolts...Glin and 'Yero follow a trail of levitating objects and hear her sneezing in a storage room. She's deeply embarassed, accepts Fiyero's Vinkus crested handkerchief through the door when offered.

"Oz bless you...it's alright, Fae...nobody saw..."

"Elphie?...can we come in?"

...but...she only lets Glinda into the room.

Galinda/Glinda/Glin

- Borderline hypochondriac, not quite, but definitely dramatic. Sensitive system.

- 🌸 Allergified 😔 Sneezonal, and particularly susceptible in Oz's Autumnial Solstice, and when everything is in bloom. Takes a regular tonic that Momsie and Popsicle regularly send from Gilikin to combat symptoms.

- (Am I projecting a lil?...totally...shamelessly. Pink and Glinda are one in the same, allergified and whining about it.)

- Elphie finds Glin crying and sneezing helplessly trying a ridiculous "cure-all" found in a magazine to 'Desternutate and clearify her Sinuses' when she's run out of her regular tonic and makes her tea instead.

- Has asked Madame Morrible, in private study, if there are 'Any spells that help with Allergification'...Unsuccessfully of course...😮‍💨

- Rapidfire high pitched sneezes, drawn out itchy buildups. Persistent. Elphaba thought this was for attention at first, before their friendship. But then she sees how genuinely miserable her fits are, how they can hurt, how embarassed she is and often holds her until they stop.

"Shhh, breathe, my sweet..."

- Hpptshhie! Aptshieew! Heeht'shieew! Eht'shiu!

- In class, Fi, Elphie and Boq have made an fond unspoken game of counting her sneezes as she has fits. Boq recounts the record in one sitting is 19 and offers his handkerchiefs...They aren't just for crying.

Also like. Person who is considering things voice. There's a response to openly angry or emotional characters I see a lot that has two sides; one where people are openly hateful, calling them toxic and writing hateposts blah blah, but the other is where people just... sanitize them. Turn their rage and sharpness dull, palatable, easy. And I'm going to be honest that the latter almost bothers me more, but the core of both is that fandom is only comfortable with a specific set of trauma responses. The 'nice' kid. The kind that internalizes and manifests outwardly as woobifiable panic attacks or jokes or people pleasing - but, of course, only to an extent (see: Fuyumi Todoroki). Trauma has to be processed in a specific way, abuse has to be processed in a specific way, and you can only direct any anger you do have at the 'right people', and if you do that too much? That's wrong too.

It's like. People do know there's no right way to process trauma, right? People develop to protect themselves in traumatic environments differently and those protective mechanisms are often not pretty or nice to witness. There are people who response via fawning and joking, sure, but there are also people who lash out or manipulate or are cruel. Or there are people who go the opposite way - fawning so hard they're accused of manipulation and dishonestly.

Because that's the thing about trauma. No one's good at handling it? And this insistence in fandom I see of moralizing reactions to and processing of trauma bothers me immensely.

Sora: Self-Esteem, Or Lack Thereof

I legit got struck with many thoughts when I woke up and decided to write an essay instead of going back to sleep. As in, this one's another long one ToT

Making Kingdom Hearts Stuff Until KH4 Comes Out (Day 13)

This is a topic that has been brought up a lot as of late but I found myself wanting to talk about it after reading some comments from some KH videos I was watching.

Specifically in Sora’s sacrifice scene in KH1 and his breakdown scene in KH3, it was interesting to see people say that they had just realized how low his self-esteem actually is, and I thought to myself, it must be interesting for them to look back and see how far back this feeling goes for him. I had my own thoughts as a result.

Sora grew up in Riku’s shadow. In the words of both of them, they agreed on the belief that Riku was the better one between them. It makes sense that Sora from the get-go had already taken blows to his self-confidence.

This is only added onto when it’s revealed that Sora was “just the delivery boy” for Riku, leading to the loss of the keyblade (which, for one, alongside the title of “Hero of the Keyblade” gave him a lot of confidence/assurance) and Donald and Goofy. This is a moment that stuck with him as shown in 358/2 Days is a memory that makes Roxas cry (in the same way seeing the Twilight Town trio made Sora cry). And while this is mostly supplemented by the manga/light novel adaptations mostly, Xion’s frustration in her encounter with Riku is reflective of that moment for Sora (especially in the manga).

In the perspective of the audience, Sora getting the keyblade back is a show of his own will and strength of heart. But in his eyes, since Donald and Goofy came back just a bit before, this is probably where the idea that his strength coming from his friends gets cemented. For him, the keyblade chooses him because he chooses to support others, which we will see rear its head in 3D.

One of the things that kept grabbing my attention when watching people play through 3D is when they get to the part where Sora says “I know the keyblade didn’t choose me, and I don’t care” because that ends up warranting confusion, and they usually say “but he was chosen though?” This is where that perspective thing shows up.

3D spent a notable amount of times mentioning how Sora isn’t the first choice. How the keyblade moved down the list (Riku to Sora), how the Organization moved down the list (Riku to Roxas to Sora). Xigbar even makes an attempt of mentioning such before Sora says the Thing. In Sora’s view, he wasn’t chosen for being special or having some kind of power but he was chosen because, in his eyes, his purpose is to help “those it [the keyblade] did choose.”

Even at his most confident (as he was on that KH2 victory high), he never viewed himself as “chosen” due to being worthy from his own merit.

And it doesn’t help that after 3D strips him of his power, he gets poked and prodded at for losing it. And that constant loss of power is something he’s aware of (“It’s always like this” line in Japanese). Others have mentioned it in other posts before, but Sora’s mistakes and failures weigh more heavily on his mind than the others who see his strength and victories over all else. Sora knows that he doesn’t understand everything and only does what he feels he can do in the situation for others. It’s kinda like everyone else sees him through these rose-tinted glasses (he gets through everything with a smile, he follows his heart /pos) but for him, he’s clawing through and following his heart /neg.

"It's okay, it's always like this."

This is all the buildup leading to his breakdown. It’s very in line with him, and it’s so fascinating seeing people realize that. Sora’s relationship with his self-esteem, alongside his trauma, are much more subtle arcs compared to other characters. It’s very much due to his style of coping being repression and smiling through everything until he can’t take it anymore.

This isn’t even taking into account other moments of his perspective like how he kinda blames himself for Donald and Goofy leaving him in KH1 (he puts it as “they had to leave” or that “they were separated” (in Japanese), never that they left or abandoned him. He usually doesn’t blame his friends if they’ve hurt him before. There’s even the tangentially connected topic of him being dehumanized.

Sora is both very straightforward and complex in his presentation and writing, just as his series is. His relationships with others are actually pretty complicated and are both the reasons for his strengths and his weaknesses (he and Riku alone are a whole doozy, being each others reasons for improvement but also their downfalls). Sora’s mental health is and will continue to be a topic of interest for me as we go into the next saga.

Someone please get him a nice hot cocoa and proper therapy…

“You take a deep breath as she steps close, and focus on the smoky pinewood scent that clings to your neighbor. The man sneers, deciding that going up the 6’3 jacked butch wasn’t worth his ego. Roy turns around, tipping her hat up so you can see her piercing green eyes. The smirk resting on her lips is nothing short of beautiful. All confidence and backed up bravado.

“You alright?” Her voice is rich, and as cocky as it is genuine. It steals away all the adrenaline and replaces it with relief. You fling yourself into her, wrapping her in a tight embrace, as all the stress and misfortune of the past several days tears you to bits. Her arms embrace you in return, warm and comforting. The only thing keeping you together, holding you steady. She kisses the top of your head, rubbing gentle circles against your skin. Despite everything, your heart clenches with how much you want her. How you wish she would hold you like this every day. Perhaps it is a moral failing, to love her despite all she has done, but her embrace feels like safety and so you can’t bring yourself to care.”
