@gushq / ❛ 。 ✩ ゚ my eyes are probably playing tricks on me again, but is that really alberto rosende? oh, wait, it’s just cristian gustavo “gus” rodríguez. yes, that twenty-six year old electronic engineering technician, who i am pretty sure is a local. according to the talk of the town, he is incredibly finicky & uninhibited, yet undeniably conscientious & innovative. that is precisely why perfectly soldered joints on a circuit board, button-down shirts with rolled up sleeves, late night lan parties with the boys, laminated datasheets scattered across a desk, a usb drive containing classic sci-fi & horror movies, & dark circles under tired eyes remind me of them so much, but then again you know what they say about virgos, we’ll see how that one turns out ! penned by maia / ast & she / her
introduction post .
ok so homeboy here has had it pretty good his entire life. his dad works relentlessly as a police sergeant and his mom had worked as a prestigious software engineer; one of the most sought out in california, and later, a software specialist for the same police station his dad works. they were neither in the poorhouse or in a mansion; they just lived humbly and comfortably. because of his mom’s vast computer knowledge, though, gus was privileged (and slightly spoiled) when it came to all the new technology, mostly video games. he started off playing at the tender age of eight with his very first gameboy and pokemon yellow as his first game, and he’s been playing through the generations of video games (both console and computer) ever since. it arguably could be considered when his interest in electronics was first sparked.
as he grew older and curiouser, gus would actually take electronics found in their home apart, investigating all the small pieces inside, and then put them back together; it was like building a puzzle. most of the time the electronics he took apart would still work after putting them back together, but other times they wouldn’t work quite as well as they did before he took them apart, and they later became projects for him to fix, once he got a better understanding of the parts inside and how they worked. youtube videos taught him the basics of what he knows now when it comes to soldering, and he was soon able to fix anything with faulty wiring, from a solar garden light to a hairdryer.
in high school, gus was definitely one of the nerdier students and this, of course, made him a target, though his outrageous sense of humour and rumbustious personality saved him somewhat from getting relentlessly bullied like most of the meek and feeble kids had to suffer through. while he wasn’t the most popular, he wasn’t a complete loser either, and managed to find make friends in the unlikeliest ways / places. anytime anyone needed a phone repaired and didn’t want to pay a small fortune to get it done, they went to gus. he made it his own little side business, fixing phones and other small electronics for his fellow classmates for a reduced fee, but not low enough that it wouldn’t be worth his while.
after graduating high school, he went to college and took a two year program to become an electronic engineering technician. while his studies were most important to him, gus broke free of all other responsibilities and social standards, and partied his ass off whenever the opportunity presented itself. he made countless connections and memories that he wouldn’t trade for the world. with everything he was able to experience, the good and bad, those two years were probably two of the best years of his life. now, gus has been working for well over five years and thoroughly enjoys what he does, but he’s been considering going to university in order to drop the technician title and become a full-fledged electronic engineer.
wanted connections .
1. homeboy needs a more athletic / jock-type friend. somebody who would have been more likely to use him as a human punching bag if they’d attended high school together. very unlikely pals, basically polar opposites of each other, but they met at the local gym once gus started getting serious about his physique / working out and they’ve been pretty good friends ever since. possibly also tries to get gus laid because they believe he has no game …. which he doesn’t lmao
2. a fellow electronics nerd, coding buddy, hacker-partner in crime. someone he can fully nerd-out with who actually understands him / reciprocates his excitement with their own. possibly is also someone he studied the same program with in college?? and they went through all the hardships together bc that would be cute. most likely also has lan parties with this person, maybe even enter gaming tournaments / competitions together and are the ultimate team / dominate online multiplayer games.
3. to add onto that best nerd bud connection: a couple other pals to make up a squad of four? classic brothers from other mothers; joke together, roast each other, game together, go out to bars occasionally, have wild adventures & make good as heck memories / stories to tell everyone else, be there for each other whenever they go through hard times & whenever they achieve great things. i imagine their personalities differing but also complimenting each other. possibly could have gone to the same high school and/or college together and remained friends?? just a Good wholesome connection.

More expats in China are using dating apps to diversify their social circles and romantic options. Photo: IC
It was 11 pm on a Saturday night, and Jeff, a European expat who has been living in Beijing for five years, was just back from a party where he met a lot of new people, both foreigners and Chinese. Still, though, he felt just a little bit empty, a little bit restless, and so he logged onto Tantan, a Chinese dating app similar to Tinder, that he has been using for the past year. He started swiping through prospective partners' pictures and limited profiles, which include information like age, zodiac sign and occupation. Swiping left means you do not like the person, right means you do. Left, left, and then, 'Oh, this girl is pretty. She's got a nice smile,' he said to himself, and swiped right. It was a match, which meant the girl also liked him. 'Hi, how are you?' he typed. According to Jeff's profile on Tantan, 5,166 girls have liked him over the past year, which translates to 5,166 chances to meet new girls online. In that time, he's achieved 1,196 matches, which meant that he and 1,196 girls liked each other. Chinese dating apps have been seeing growing popularity among expats living in China, in part because many foreigners' social circles are largely limited to other expats, and these apps give them the chance to meet and date locals. Among the most popular apps, both for Chinese and foreign singles, are Tantan, Momo and Skouts. Sun Yang, a public relations director from Momo, told Metropolitan that they have seen more expats using their dating app over the past few years, though they didn't have any statistics detailing their number of foreign users. Another dating app, Tantan, didn't reply to Metropolitan's calls as of press date, but according to Metropolitan's count, it contains around one expat user for every 10 Chinese users in expat-heavy neighborhoods like Guomao and Sanlitun. Milo Gonzales, a Beijing-based relationship counselor from the US, said that dating apps are a quicker and easier way to meet new people for expats. 'It gives people the opportunity to talk and communicate to see if they have the same interests, and if their general viewpoints click before they meet in person to see if they are right for each other,' he said.
IndonesianCupid (Dating Sites and App) Indonesian Cupid is a top Indonesian dating site connecting local singles with foreign singles. This is the biggest Indonesian dating site for foreigners. Now it has both dating site and android dating app available. Indonesian Cupid is part of well-reputed Cupid Media, one of the largest dating.

Women from the West and from China generally take different approaches to dating when using dating apps in China. Photo: IC Black singles near me review.

The good and bad of cross-cultural dating What Jeff likes about dating apps is how easy it is to find and meet pretty local girls. In real life, many expats work so much that they have only limited time to socialize, and when they do, according to Jeff, they mostly hang out with other expats. 'Dating apps help break that invisible boundary between expats and locals,' he said. That has indeed been the case for the two male expats who talked to Metropolitan, both of whom have noticed they are more popular on Chinese dating apps than they are on apps in their home countries. A case in point is Bruce from the UK, who has only been using Tantan for one month but has already received 236 matches. 'In the UK, when I use Tinder, I usually get 20 to 30 matches tops, because there are fewer girls who swipe right for me than in China.' Another difference, according to Bruce, is that in the UK, it is usually guys who start the conversation and do the work to try and impress and win over the girls. 'In China, I feel the girls are more keen to meet with me and impress me. Chinese girls don't have arrogance is the best way to explain it, I guess.' In his experience, Chinese girls on Tantan usually start conversations by asking where he comes from and what he does in Beijing, before asking for his WeChat, and then if he wants to meet up. 'But I think it's too quick,' Bruce said. So far, he has met two girls through Tantan. Andrew, a Brit in Beijing who's been using Chinese dating apps for five months, says he quickly discovered that while women in the West generally start out chatting about shared interests, Chinese women are more likely to ask about his job and future plans. He recalls one Chinese girl who, after a single date, began planning their wedding and future together in China. 'I understand that in China, some girls are facing pressure to get married before a certain age, which drives them to want to get serious faster in relationships,' said Andrew. Another source of culture shock for expats is unrealistic expectations. Shim Bo-kyung (pseudonym), a 24-year-old student from South Korea, said he often gets the impression that his Chinese dates like to imagine him as being just as rich and handsome as the characters from South Korean TV series. 'Some of my online dates would call me Oppa (Korean for 'older brother,' a term of endearment sometimes used for boyfriends) in a coquettish way just like in South Korean TV series, even though they are older than me, which just freaks me out,' he said. 'Some of them also assume that I am rich, even though I am just a student who works part time,' he said. Shim added that some Chinese girls have even asked if he comes from a wealthy family like in the famous South Korean TV series The Heirs. Flings vs serious relationships Although dating apps have made it easier to meet more people, the relationships formed are often short-lived and shallow, because they were based in the first place on little more than appearances. 'With dating apps, people check out one another's pictures very quickly, and if they think you're attractive, that's it,' Jeff said. 'Most don't even look at the information you've written down.' Gonzales said that, according to his observations, most guys who use dating apps are more interested in casual relationships, because so many apps are geared at hooking up. Other expats have different intentions, and use dating apps more to meet locals, learn the language and deepen their understanding of China. Bruce, for example, wanted to make new friends and maybe find someone who wanted to learn English and could teach him Chinese at the same time. As a result, he met a 19-year-old student who wants to study in the UK, and they've been meeting up to do a language and culture exchange. Erika, a 22-year-old student from South Korea, has similar intentions to Bruce. 'I'm not looking for the love of my life on dating apps. I use them more for the sake of having different experiences and expanding my world view. By meeting more people from different backgrounds and careers, I've learned a lot about interacting with different kinds of people. I've learned how to start and carry a conversation, to alleviate awkward tension and to listen to others' stories,' Erika said. She said the best experiences are when you hit it off with someone, and end up talking endlessly. She recalls one guy she met, who works at an IT company, with whom she had a great conversation about philosophy and life. He also expressed interest in making Korean friends, since his work and social environment is exclusively Chinese. 'I've been surprised to see how eager most people are to interact with foreigners; it's just that they usually have few chances to do so,' Erika said. 'I think Chinese guys are more willing to start conversations with expat girls on apps than they are in real life.'

It Takes a V.I.L.L.A.G.E. to Make a Writer
With November upon us, it’s a great time to reflect on what makes you the writer you are, and how the rest of the NaNo community can help you complete your novel. Today, Municipal Liason Sarah Peloquin shows us how it “takes a village” to make a writer:
I enjoyed solitude as a child. Now, as a parent of four little minions, alone time is a rare and beautiful treasure. When I first began honing my writing, I thought, Perfect. Writing is an alone sort of activity and I’m an alone sort of gal.
And writing is, in one sense, a solitary matter. No one else will ever write you.
Your creativity and imagination spilling out onto blank pages is solely yours. At the same time, your inspiration for writing is the product of life experiences and the community of people that shaped you. A hermit in a dark, cold cell will never have the same ability to create a story as a person who has tasted and seen and touched and heard and felt the world around them in all its exquisite glory.
When I say it takes a VILLAGE to make a writer, here’s why:
Virtual – Our world has expanded with the expansion of technology. We now have ways of connecting to our fellow writers that we never dreamed of one hundred years ago. Get involved in the online chats, twitter word sprints, and NaNoWriMo’s own amazing regional forums to connect to others who are on the same journey, in the same part of the world, with you this November.
Inspiration – NaNoWriMo’s forums are amazing for offering new writing challenges, writer pen pals from around the world, mentors who’ve seen it all and lived to tell the tale, and even threads just for those times when the blank page is your worst fear realized.
Links – To Write-ins at your local libraries, coffee shops, bookstores, and more. Calendars of events, both the official NaNoWriMo one and those compiled by volunteer Municipal Liaisons, who work tirelessly at bringing you the resources you need to succeed at this 30 day writing challenge. (I’ve heard chocolate is a good incentive for MLs in lieu of payment)
Life – Happens and it’s amazing to me every year when my own brilliant region circles the wagons to support a struggling writer through a difficult time. Care packages for the sick, an emergency online meet-up when the words just won’t flow, or just a note of encouragement to remind someone that not meeting their writing goal in November is NOT failure by any stretch of the imagination.
Affirmation – Whether it’s winning a contest for the most words written or a Hip, HIP, HUZZAH for even making it to a write-in after the car broke down, the baby-sitter was a no-show, or the house nearly burned down right before you left because your husband was trying to be helpful by making dinner for you. We all need to hear words of encouragement for our efforts. A community of writers brings that in abundance in my humble experience.
Galvanized – This word is NOT used often enough in my opinion. What better place for a writer than a community (online or otherwise) of fellow writing warriors who can give us the kick in the pants we need on those days we don’t want to stare at another blank screen?
Educational – Writing is an ongoing learning project and there is no greater way to continue honing your craft than building a diverse community of writers around you. You get better the more you learn.
Your writing world will expand this November, and it’s time to jump right into the fray. Find your region, build relationships, and for goodness sake, write!
Sarah Peloquin loves great books on rainy afternoons, whether it’s The Chronicles of Narnia read aloud to three (almost four) squirmy children or her favorite history, poetry, or parenting books. She homeschools her aforementioned tiny minions with her amazing husband in Midwest, North America. She found NaNoWriMo in 2008, but didn’t get serious about it until 2010. Sarah took on the challenge of Municipal Liaison in 2014 and enjoys her region immensely. You can find some of her scribblings and inspirational posts at: Musings on a Life Lived and Instagram.

Do we need the arts in education?
On a grey afternoon in February half term, I found myself staring out at a soggy high street, feeling stuck. I had taken myself, a pen and my favourite golden notebook to a local coffee shop to hash out a conundrum in words - something I have often done when feeling conflicted. I was scribbling away, but I wasn’t getting my answer.
I had worked for the last six years as a creative practitioner bringing music, drama and movement to primary schools, and recently I was finding a job that I had mostly loved more exhausting than usual. I was losing my footing with it, and I was here trying to figure out why. As a visiting member of staff to the schools I was working in, I was beginning to feel like a small and insignificant cog in a big machine. Feeling the weight of responsibility to the children that I work with, I found myself circling and picking at a single imperative question: what impact does my work have?
Well, I was about to find myself with much more time to mull this over than I’d bargained for. On the 18th of March 2020 Boris Johnson announced the indefinite closure of schools with almost immediate effect. Children would be away from their school communities for the longest period of time in living memory and I was no longer able to visit in person. It felt dystopian.
I found myself worrying a lot about the UK’s schoolchildren. When you work in schools, you see that learning is just one small part of school life and that there is so much important stuff that can’t be measured by a test that helps children grow into healthy, happy adults. School is where children learn their value as part of a community, where they learn to be kind and considerate citizens and to develop empathy. It is where they learn to socialise, to persevere, to explore and to overcome. For the most vulnerable children it can be the only place that feels safe, the only place where they can eat, or keep warm.
During lockdown, my nana spent some time giving me painting advice over the phone and through these chats, I got to hear about her relationship with her work as an artist and how it has sustained her. Nana speaks of her creative practise quite literally as an old friend that has kept her company through the hardships of her life, and I get this. As a songwriter, my practise was there before the pandemic, and when life changed in every imaginable way this year, it was the one constant, keeping me anchored. I had taken creativity as a part of my life for granted, but stripped of my friends, my work and my life, it’s value was suddenly starkly clear; my writing gives me purpose. It gives me the space to process, to connect, reflect and so much more.
In school there is no such thing as a child who isn’t creative. Throughout 2020 I have watched as each of my ‘I’m not creative!’ friends have gardened or cooked or DIY’d their way through the turmoil of lockdown. No matter how much we are taught to unlearn it, creativity is in us. I began to reflect on the magic moments of my job, of all the times that a child has created something moving beyond their years, or has surprised the adults and children in the room with a side to them that we hadn’t previously known. My mind turned to the year 4 teacher pointing to one of the most dynamic and enthusiastic children in our sessions, and telling me that usually he is the shyest in the class. I thought of the Year 2 class whose writing about the Victorians, I was told, came to life after we’d visited them in our time machine. I thought of the autistic boy taking part in a group performance for the first time, exploding with pride watching his class erupt in applause. To be given the time and space to create something bleeds into the rest of our lives in invisible and miraculous ways. It supports and nurtures the communities that we belong to, it helps us celebrate our individuality whilst uniting us through our commonality. If I could plant a seed, I thought to myself, if I could inspire the children I work with to nurture their creativity, it could grow into something with branches that reaches out and supports them in every area of their lives. Like a strong oak tree rooted within, it could be the calm that they need in a storm, or (as it has been for my Nana and me) an old pal that they can lean on for the rest of their lives. I began to see what had always been true; that the arts in education is not a small cog in a big machine, but more like the oil that keeps the wheels turning.
I recently returned to my golden notebook and I knew that I now had my answer. I thought back to one thing in particular that my Nana said, as I muddled paints across my sketchbook in the sun, that has stuck in my mind on each and every school day since.
‘What a great honour it is to teach’ she mused. My nana, at 89, still taught two art classes until Covid struck. She continued ‘To be able to take something so otherworldly, so magic, really, and be able to give that to someone else, is the most wonderful thing. Greater still, is seeing someone make it their own, to do more with it than you ever might have, to watch them become their own artist. Art doesn’t belong to us - it a gift from above, and we can change the world by passing it on’.
As our first term back comes to a close, and we see out this difficult year, I am clear of one thing. The arts are essential. I have never been happier to do what I do.

New Look Sabres: GM 1 - PIT - Lies?
Do you feel lied to? I got to say I don’t feel lied to. I know we had a coach and GM who both sold us on the idea there would be competition for roster spots and here we are looking at an opening night roster that looks awfully similar to last season. Were we lied to? This is hazardous territory for an optimist. I risk coming across like I just defend the organization at every turn. Perhaps I am less prone to join the pity aboard the latest hashtag fire this guy bandwagon. At that point, I minus well just apply for an PR position. Admittedly I was late to the Fire Housley Party and history shows the earlier you hopped on that one the smarter you appear. I was proposing ways the Sabres could make the playoffs well into February last season. You could’ve argued the season was over in December or January even with the win streak. Life is just too full of truly awful shit for me to then turn to my favorite sports team and say: “You lied to me! You Suck!” Marco Scandella is a bad player but he’s also a douchebag in real life. I would love for him not to be on my favorite hockey team, but do I feel like dragging myself along the hot, sharp rocks of pessimism after spending my day trying to figure out why Congress has decided party over country is the new norm? No. You see, no matter how bad this Sabres team gets I am going to look at them optimistically. Yeah, I’ll sprinkle in both the realism and the pessimism a lot of days, but the base ingredient will always be optimism because why would I watch sports to be more miserable? You take sports too seriously and it just becomes another source of misery which is bad for the stuff that actually matters in your life.
That was a rant, but it was also a long way of saying I think we’re underestimating this roster. They can be 100% the same players as last year and still be good. There are too many variables in this game to insist results will be the same; especially with a new coach. That’s leaving out the fact that although the win streak was a statistical anomaly on par with the first of the Meg, it doesn’t happen unless you got the horses to do it in the first place. Spoiler Alert: The Meg gets skewered by Jason Statham at the end. The same happened to the first half beast of the Buffalo Sabres last season. Even as the skewering was occurring last year we beat a Penguins team, which by the way also looks strikingly similar to last year’s club minus Phil Kessel, wait for it… twice! The Sabres beat the Pens twice last year including once when Pittsburgh was gunning for a playoff spot. Tonight was the first night of what I think will be a surprisingly good Sabres season. Here is a fact: the Buffalo Sabres had not won a season opener since the lockout shortened 2012-2013 season. Tonight they hung a 3-1 multi-goal loss on the Pittsburgh Penguins not only winning their season opener; but taking advantage of an opposing team very much not having a good night. That alone is a beautiful if it is a sign of things to come.
There is so much I could say about just being thankful for a great Sabres broadcast crew, new 50th Anniversary promos and throwback highlights but I said I don’t want to look like a Kool-aid drinker. The only big lie tonight was me casting dispersions that I’m anything other than a big old sucker for this club. They were fun from the word go in this first game! Five minutes in the Pens gave up a defensive zone turnover and Casey Mittelstadt turned the play around. He maneuvered the puck to Conor Sheary who sniped one past Matt Murray to put the visitors up 1-0! I thought I was seeing things that first period as Buffalo skated circles around the home team. There were more chances too. The yet untitled Olofsson-Eichel-Reinhart line looked dangerous. They looked dangerous and repeatedly connected on passes you can’t imagine will not lead to goals much longer. This game was also breakaway after breakaway. Apparently Kris Letang and the Pens defense has not been the same brick wall of old; it seemed like every time you turned around a fourth liner was taking a one-on-one shot with the goalie. Of course the first couple times it was Girgensons and Okposo so of course no conversion. In the third Olofsson got a similar opportunity and almost sunk it but we’ll get there.
Something happened in the second period that was very on narrative for Sabres twitter of the last several days since Training Camp ended: a Sobotka flub. Our old pal Vlad put his glove on the puck and gave Pittsburgh their first powerplay opportunity of the game. I would tell you this was evidence of the lie of the coaching staff we talked about earlier, but Jason Botterill backed up his guy in a pregame interview making it very clear the philosophy of this team is veterans first. To call the roster competition promise a lie is misleading, it was always about the veterans whether we knew it or not. I’m not pleased about it either but hopefully these incidents on the ice teach them a lesson. Evgeni Malkin did that task scoring an equalizer on the resulting powerplay. When you concede a goal to the Pens, especially an equalizer you have to be careful not to let the game get away from you. Luckily tonight the Sabres did just that and although the counterattack surely came, the defense held up. Namely Henri Jokiharju’s regular season Sabres debut showed his potential. He can get pucks out of the zone... AND he wins puck battles. This defensive depth was effective and fun tonight but geez the time on ice still reeked of a decade of futility. I would say I don’t know who will take all these defensive minutes once Ristolainen is inevitably traded but that’d be stupid: there’s at least 4 guys just on that side of the defense who can take those minutes. The Sabres survived the Pens and even started to dominate. Casey and Conor connected on the powerplay this time with a little over five minutes left in the second. I nearly dropped my Hard Cider: Sheary got a rebound and redirected it around Murray like he was doing some kind of Jeff Skinner impression. Retaking the lead was fun but what happened in the last minute of that middle frame was downright arousing.
Rasmus Dahlin scored a dangle goal that will surely be in this season’s highlight pack next Spring. Sam Reinhart and our Swedish wonder-boy skated into the zone on another surprising breakaway and passed it. Dahlin deked, dangled and put it top shelf. Samson was still going in hard thinking he’d have a rebound to tap in. No sir, this was just a grade-A certified beauty. Going into the second intermission I fought off the feelings this could be a rout. You figure the Stanley Cup caliber counterattack the Pens were known for would show up. It just never came. The breakaways just kept coming and now the big names were starting to get them. Victor Olofsson bounced one off the post! Albeit no Sabre scored on a breakaway in one of the most breakaway heavy games I’ve seen in a while. As the minutes dragged on it became more and more real. Then one soft penalty gave the Pens one last shot. Fans had booed them and were filing out of the building and… they didn’t capitalize. The Sabres took care of business and won this game 3-1 in regulation. I’m sure we’re in for several games this team loses against inferior competition this season but it’s nice to hope this could be the standard for the coming months. Let’s jut enjoy this. Conor Sheary scored his fifth goal against his former club and his second multi-goal game against them! Real Penguin killer, eh? This was the first Sabre season-opening win since the lockout shortened 2012-2013 season when Brian Flynn and Steve Ott were on this team. It was the first win in a coaching debut since 1997! That last stat is a little irrelevant, but I thought Krueger deserved some love after the hell we’ve been given him. When the Sabres lost in a shutout in the season opener last year I said I never take first games of the season too seriously. I’ll hold any declarative statements for another day but gee, this game gave me hope!
All of the 50th anniversary stuff on the broadcast got me thinking: I ought to do something special for this season. So here’s my idea: every divisional game this season, the first being next Wednesday against Montreal, I ask all you guys what was the most significant game the Sabres played against them. I think it could be fun to look back on some history. I’ll be at the home opener on Saturday and the Fan Fest starting at 5 beforehand. Shoot me a DM, drop a comment here or send a carrier pigeon to me if you want to meet up. If you are even remotely inclined to do such a thing you should also drop a like and share this blog around. This postgame stuff happens after every single Sabres game if you’re new here. Sometimes I can’t get it done same night but always before the next game. I hope you enjoyed what you got tonight. I can’t wait to see where this goes! Let’s Go Buffalo!
Thanks for Reading.
P.S. For the record, that Season Preview I did for Southtowns Tickets was submitted before the final roster and paper moves. The collective angst of Sabres twitter hadn’t blown up to DEFCON 4 at that point; it was more of a dull roar when I wrote that article.

New writer ask meme... how about You've got mail Coldflash AU with tons of angst and tons of smut and fluff towards the end??
(WHAT are you doing to me!)
Barry Allen owns and runs his mother’s bookshop, which he practicallygrew up in and has worked at all his life. His mother died from a B&E whenhe was 10, but that just makes the shop more special to him. His father passedaway last year after a heart-attack, and ever since, Barry has been even moreobsessed with staying in the shop rather than going out with friends or datingor anything outside of work.
Iris, his best friend since school days, keeps trying to gethim to just DATE and live his life, but Barry never confessed that his firstlove was HER, and now she’s married and pregnant with her first child, and thatjust makes it harder even though Barry knows he needs to move on.
His employees are great friends too, though they’re a littlesubtler about how they try to get him out of the shop. Cisco will ask Barryover for video game nights, and Caitlin will invite Barry along to theaterexcursions, but Barry hates being a third wheel with her husband, as nice asRonnie is. HR is great too, he’s just a little…difficult to handle in largedoses. Plus, the guy seems far too obsessed with this popular romance author,E.B. Thawne, which Barry accused Iris’s husband of being once, but Eddie swearsit’s just a coincidence that their names are so similar.
“Besides, my middle name is Richard, Barr.”
(The romance novelist is HR, using the pseudonym of EobardThawne but changing it to EB to be more like HR. He totally got the idea ofusing Thawne after meeting Eddie and Iris. He works at Barry’s shop for fun, since he makes A LOT of money from his writing.)
Cisco and Caitlin have started reading those romance novelstoo, which is highly inappropriate to be pouring over during shop hours. Barry’sbookstore is for CHILDREN.
Or at least it should be, if they can survive the corporategiant moving in around the corner, Rogue Books. Lisa Snart is the face of thecompany, “A really nice face too,” Cisco has said on more than one occasion, but her partner and brother Leonard Snart is known as the real shark behind thebusiness. He’s so ruthless, they call him Captain Cold. It’s terrible the waythis powerhouse is ruining family owned businesses like Barry’s. The ScarletReader is everything a little book store should be.
At least Barry has his secret pen pal, who he met one nighton a message board support group for people who’ve lost their parents. No realnames or details are given, it’s just the chance for people with similarexperiences to connect and vent – like group therapy for busy people (or inBarry’s case, people who don’t get out much.)
WynterNights72 is just so easy to talk to. He lost hismother when he was young too, and his father passed away a few years ago, justlike Barry’s passed away last year. Of course Wynter didn’t have a goodrelationship with his father like Barry did, but it’s still a similar tale ofwoe.
They don’t even chat about their folks much anymore, justrandom things. They created their own private board so they can leave eachother messages whenever they want and keep it between them. It’s nice to havesomeone to talk to who doesn’t know Barry’s real name, someone whose face Barryhas never seen.
Of course he likes to imagine the guy is attractive andsuccessful and totally smitten with Barry like Barry is with him, but he couldnever actually do anything about it. They’re just pen pals. The only thingBarry knows is that the man also lives in Central City. It would be insane toever be more than friends.
Meanwhile, Leonard Snart runs Rogue Books as joint CEO withhis sister and their childhood friend, Mick Rory, who handles the logisticswhen it comes to demolition and construction of new stores. Len has a greatteam who handles financials, staffing, marketing, allowing Lisa to be thespokesperson and Len to stick to the shadows.
Len has learned to be cold because he has to be, that’s whathas made Rogue Books so successful. It certainly wasn’t his father’s effortswhen he was still alive running the company. The only thing Lewis was ever goodfor was giving Len the best sister he could ask for…and the best littlebrother.
Michael is only seven. He was two when Lewis died, so hebarely remembers him, and thinks more of Len as his father figure. Michael’smother has full custody but she lets Len and Lisa take Michael and spend timewith him whenever they want.
Outside of Lisa, Mick, and a few close coworkers, Len doesn’treally have friends. He’s odd friends with a few of his exes, but he figureswhat’s the point in dating when he always loses in love? Lisa tried to convincehim to go to counseling, that maybe if he had someone else to talk to it’d beeasier to open up to a potential partner someday.
So Len found his way to that message board, because he doesn’tDO therapy, and met Runner_in_Red. He can tell by the occasional reference thatthis guy is a few years younger than he is, but he’s just so easy to talk to.Len’s never had a friend quite like Red, and he likes having him all to himself, like a secret. Sometimes, he wishes he had the courage to ask for them to meet, but he doesn’t want to ruin what they have. So he pines in private, wonderingwhat Red might look like on the other side of that screen.
It’s one day when Len is spending the afternoon with Michaelthat his little brother insists on going into the bookshop they pass along thestreet. Len feels a little awkward about the whole thing, because this place isthe competition he’s currently running into the ground with his new megastorearound the block, but he wants to encourage Michael’s love of reading.
They stumble upon a children’s circle, where a young man isdoing an impressive and adorably engaging reading from The Runaway Dinosaur, which was always one of Len’s favorite children’s books too. Len is instantlycharmed—until he realizes that the young man is Barry Allen, the shop’s owner. Shit. Len cannot let this kid know thatthe enemy walked through his door, so he introduces himself as Len.
“Just Len.”
Of course, Michael thinks that Len’s nickname as CaptainCold is awesome, “Like a superhero!” So when Len and Barry are talking, andBarry mentions that they’re trying to stay afloat against the evil Captain Coldaround the corner, Michael spouts off his newest spelling word.
“C-O-L-D. Just like—”
“Well, we need to be going,” Len says and quickly makes scarce, pushing Michael out the door.
His getaway doesn’t save him for long though as he runs intoBarry at a party later that week and the cat is out of the bag about who Lenreally is.
This devolves into their very intense rivalry as bookstoreowner nemeses, while privately at home Len and Barry are each asking Wynter andRed for advice…as they slowly fall more and more in love with the pen pal they’venever met.

HELP PRISONERS ESCAPE
Many people in radical circles spend a bit of their time doing prisoner support activities. This can range from joining a books-to-prisoners project that mails free books to inmates, individually becoming pen pals with a prisoner. Some people focus on political prisoners—prisoners held because of their involvement in radical actions or framed because of their beliefs. Other people see the entire prison-industrial complex as illegitimate, criticize the way that it targets marginalized communities, and/or believe that it is wrong to imprison people at all. Many people are in prison because of the war on drugs, or because economic inequality under capitalism impoverishes entire communities and pushes people to do illegal things to survive.
A key way we can support prisoners is by communicating with them. Prison is a deeply isolating environment. In an email-dominated world, writing an old-fashioned letter on paper can be surprisingly rewarding for you as well as a prisoner. Writing to prisoners is not charity, as we on the outside have as much to gain from these relationships as the prisoners. There are many pen pal networks that connect prisoners with those on the outside. If you're in the bay area, Slingshot for collective receives hundreds of letters from prisoners each year and is always looking people to help us write back.
A letter is a simple way to brighten someone’s day in prison by creating human interaction and communication–something prisons attempt to destroy. Beyond that, writing keeps prisoners connected to the communities and movements of which they are a part, allowing them to provide insights and stay up to date.
Knowing the importance of letter writing is crucial. Prisons are very lonely, isolating, and disconnected places. Any sort of bridge from the outside world is greatly appreciated.
With that in mind, avoid feeling intimidated, especially about writing to someone you do not know. And if possible try and be a consistent pen pal.
What to write
For many, the first line of the first letter is difficult to write–there is uncertainty and intimidation that come with it. Never fret, it’s just a letter.
For the first letter, it’s best to offer an introduction, how you heard about the prisoner, a little about yourself. Tell stories, write about anything you are passionate about–movement work and community work are great topics until you have a sense of the prisoner’s interests outside of political organizing.
And what we hear from prisoners time and time again is to include detail. Prison is so total that the details of life on the outside become distant memories. Smells, textures, sounds of the street all get grayed out behind bars. That’s not to say that you should pen a stream-of-consciousness novel.
For things you should and should not remember when writing to folks, read GUIDELINES.
Here are some tips on writing letters to prisoners.
When writing to prisoners, you have to put their prisoner number on the first mailing address to get it through a prisoner you don't
Make sure to put a return address on your letter. If you are writing to where you live know, it may be best to use a PO box or other address that doesn't disclose
If you're writing to a prisoner, keep in mind that the prison officials or other authorities may read your letter. Don't discuss anything sensitive. If the prisoner is waiting for trial or sentencing (or on appeal), it may be better not to discuss the details of their case for the
Prisons prohibit mailing certain items like books, food, money, etc. Ask the prisoner rules (see guidelines below)
Don't make promises you can't keep like offering to find a lawyer to take their case, sending them money or expensive items, offering them housing on release, organizing a support campaign, etc.. Being let down when you're locked up can be especially devastating. Be clear about your intentions. If you're not looking for a romantic relationship, it can be helpful to all involved to say so right off all prisoners are angels
While the state locking people up is shitty, it doesn't follow that They are people just like everyone else, and some of them are flawed or can be manipulative. Use reasonable caution and treat prisoners like you would another pen pal.
Be careful about accepting collect phone calls from jail prison collect calls absurdly expensive.
Guidelines
You cannot enclose glitter or write with glittery gel pens or puff paint pens. Some prisons do not allow cards or letters that include permanent marker, crayon, or colored pencils and it is best to check with the prisoner beforehand. That said, it is usually best to write in standard pencil or non-gel pen in blue or black ink.
You cannot include articles or anything else torn out of a newspaper or magazine. However, you can print that same article from the internet or photocopy it and write your letter on the other side.
You cannot include polaroid pictures (though these days, that’s not much of an issue), but you can include regular photographs. Some prisoners are limited to the number of photos they can have at any given time, so again, check with the prisoner before sending a stack of photos.
If mailing more than a letter, clearly write the contents of the envelope/package. Label it “CONTENTS” and include a full list.
A couple of technical details– make sure you include your return address inside the letter as well as on the envelope. It’s common for prisoners to receive letters without the envelope.
Make sure to paginate– number each page, such as 1 of 3, 2 of 3, et cetera. This insures that if pages of your letter don’t make it to the prisoner, they will know it.
Be careful about making promises and only commit to what you are certain you can do. This should go without saying, but it’s not a good idea to make commitments to someone you don’t have a relationship with. If you can’t maintain a correspondence, let them know up front. Conversely, if you want to maintain an ongoing correspondence, let them know that as well.
If you are writing to someone who is pre-trial, don’t ask questions about their case. Discussing what a prisoner is alleged to have done can easily come back to haunt them during their trial or negotiations leading up to it.
Don’t valorize the person you are writing. Keep in mind that these are folks coming from the same movements and communities that you are. They aren’t looking for adoration, but rather to maintain correspondence.
Finally, do not write anything you wouldn’t want Fox News, a cop, or a judge to see. Assume that intelligence and law enforcement agencies are reading your letter. On a related note, this advice goes for any snail mail, e-mail, texting, messaging, or talking that takes place in known activist spaces or homes. This is not legal advice, just basic movement survival common sense (to review, read STAYING SAFE).
Staying safe
You never have to, and it is never a good idea to talk to police, FBI, ICE, or any other law enforcement agent or investigator. Other than providing your name and address to a police officer who is investigating a crime, you never have to talk. You will not outsmart them by talking or sound less suspicious by talking or make things easier for yourself by talking. Anything you say will be used against you and others. If they catch you in a lie or inconsistency they can charge you with a separate crime.
Say: I have nothing to say to you OR I need a lawyer present to continue this conversation. If they come to your home, workplace, or school, ask them for a card and tell them your attorney will be in contact with them.
The FBI may threaten you with a grand-jury subpoena for not talking. It doesn’t matter because they were probably going to subpoena you anyway and you weren’t going to talk anyway.
If you receive a grand jury subpoena you should contact a lawyer immediately and let others in your community know. People can be held for up to 18 months (potentially longer) for refusing to talk to grand juries. Even so, for our own survival, it is imperative that we take that risk and do not participate in grand juries as they are used to indict political prisoners and prisoners of war.
In the federal legal system, the grand jury is used to decide whether someone should be charged (“indicted”) for a serious crime. The grand jury hears evidence presented by the prosecutor: the U.S. Attorney. The grand jury uses subpoenas to gather this evidence. It can subpoena documents, physical evidence, and witnesses to testify. The “special” federal grand jury, created in 1970, can be used to investigate “possible” organized criminal activity rather than a specific crime.
Currently there is more than one active grand jury in new york city. There are also more than likely informants and agent provocateurs infiltrating anarchist communities here.
It is imperative that we continue our work as anarchists including the support of political prisoners and prisoners of war towards the abolition of the state, of capitalism, and of all oppression.
It is also imperative that we do so in a way that is smart, strategic, and sustainable.

Name → Guzma Closed character Age → 32 Occupation → Skull Boss Affiliation → Team Skull Pokemon Team → Golisopod, Ariados, Masquerain, Pinsir, Scizor, Joltik Aesthetics →
Sharp words and harsh hands. The song plays on repeat, but he wants to change the tune. Hair dyed white to stand out, shoulders slumped to blend in, to look smaller than he already is, though his temper can fill a room. Dark circles around curious eyes, Guzma is a booming laugh too big for his body, gold chains and tattoos and everything bent out of shape around him. Cigarette smoke follows him like a cloud. Bugs flock to him, nuzzling bruised knuckles.
Bio →
Growing up in Alola, nothing seems better than being a trial captain. From the first battle he ever saw, there was nothing else Guzma wanted to be. His home life wasn’t exactly the most nurturing environment, but deep down he was sure that if he made his father proud, it would fix everything. Though the other children mocked his preferred type of pokemon, he showed them all, winning trophy after trophy, and even getting the great Hala himself to take him on as an apprentice. But it seemed that, no matter how hard he tried, he didn’t have what it took to be a captain.
Things went from bad to worse at home until finally Guzma found he was strong enough to fight back. Enough was enough. He left home and never looked back. With his dreams crushed and nothing but his pokemon with him, he didn’t know quite where to go. He spent the next few years going from one couch to the next, never staying in one place for too long. Finally, after watching childhood friends grow up to get everything he had ever wanted, he decided that was the last straw. If he couldn’t be made a trial captain, he would surpass them all with a team of his own.
Slowly, but surely, Team Skull began to grow. Guzma aimed to be tough, but fair, although his temper still often got the best of him. Still, the team would turn away no one that wanted to join. A few weeks after the team took Po Town, Guzma was approached by Lusamine. She said that she had been observing Team Skull for months, and that she admired his strength and determination. Swayed by the respect she seemed to have for him, Guzma agreed to ally with her and the Aether Foundation. Not long after, he would come to regret the decision.
After the fall of Aether, Guzma found himself lost again. He left his team behind, feeling as though he had betrayed them. For months, he wandered Alola, until a long talk with Hala helped to lift the heavy weight from his shoulders. Still, staying in Alola didn’t feel quite right, so he moved on, roaming from couch to couch as he traveled from one region to the next. But now, with the whisperings of other teams reforming, Guzma’s started to wonder if it’s time for Team Skull to make a comeback.
Connections →
Nanu. Confidante. Pen pal. When the world let him down, Guzma decided that the Kahunas and Captains were part of the problem, and he wanted nothing to do with them. But then there was Nanu, who let Team Skull take Po Town to do with what they wished. At first, Guzma was sure it was some kind of trap, but the old Kahuna never launched an attack or called more officers in to deal with them. After a while, they started talking. Nanu was alright, for a Kahuna anyway. They came to a sort of understanding, something that continued even after Team Skull fell apart. Though there was no reason to, Nanu offered a shoulder to lean on, and it only seems right for Guzma to do the same. There’s a fondness there that Guzma can’t quite explain, but he still writes Nanu every week.
Kukui. Former friend. Regrets. There’s a lot of Guzma’s childhood that he’d like to forget, but he always feels a little wistful remembering the time when he called Kukui a friend. They trained together, developing a playful rivalry as they worked to complete their island challenges. When neither of them were chosen to be a trial captain, Guzma was crushed. He lashed out at everyone, even Kukui, and by the time he tried to make it right, Kukui was off on a new adventure. Their different paths in life only made them grow further apart in the worst of ways. After putting Team Skull on hold, Guzma was tempted to reach out again, but he’s pretty sure that bridge is already too broken no matter how much he might wish otherwise.
Hau. Kid brother. Soft spot. Guzma doesn’t like kids as a rule, but he can appreciate someone who keeps coming back smiling no matter how the world tries to kick them down. After all was said and done with Team Skull, Hala took Guzma in again, where he found himself training alongside Hau, who had taken a break from the island challenge to try to grow stronger. At first, he found the brat annoying, but with time, he started seeing Hau almost like the younger sibling he never had. Hau is often still a little too cheery for his tastes, but with the weight on the kid’s shoulders now with the title of Kahuna, Guzma can’t help but be a little worried. He’s stayed in touch with Hau, even though they’re a few regions apart now.

16 Signs Youre An INFJ, The Worlds Rarest Personality Type
INFJ, from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument, is believed to be the rarest personality type, and to make up less than 2% of the population. Oh, and I am one . div> Oskar Krawczyk INFJ, referring to one of the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types, has become a bit of a buzzword in the media over the past several years. The reasonablenes behind it: INFJ is considered to be the rarest personality type, doing up less than 2% of the world’s whole population. They are labeled as” The Advocate ,” and have been described as “mysterious,” ” instinctive ,” and” emotionally smart ,” hitherto the type as a whole is often misunderstood. Perhaps “you think youre”, as well. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test, created in the 1940′ s by baby and daughter, Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs, originally stanch from the typological theories of Carl Jung, a prominent psychoanalyst. The test estimates an individual in 4 lists: and using these criteria, resolves which category one’s personality most tilts toward. INFJs would be those individuals whose identities favor the sides of Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging. INFJs can be difficult to spot due to the fact that they are not dominant in civilization and tend to be reserved individuals. However, INFJs impel furiously steadfast pals, empathetic and unionized employees, and outstanding rulers for causes they deem worthy and for the greater good of humanity. 1. INFJs often report experiencing lonely and “different,” and for the right reasons. INFJs are low in multitudes so they tend to have trouble procure other persons who meet “the worlds” in the same realm as they do. Most people who are this kind have admitted find different from their peers since they were a very young child. 2. INFJs take an all-or-nothing coming to life . strong> INFJs, a inquisitive desegregate of psychological and logical, do not was ready to squander their meter on anything inauthentic. Although they may dabble in playing the field, INFJs are truly about aspect over part and will become disinterested in anyone or anything they perceive as being fraudulent, planning or wishy-washy. 3. INFJs exude warmness, and others instantly experience cozy in their spirit . strong> It is not singular for a stranger to sit down next to an INFJ and within times, disclose their most personal confidentials, horrors, and reveries. In point, this happens often to INFJs with seemingly no rhyme or reason. This personality type has a knack for impelling others immediately feel at ease, and they are great listeners and trusted pals who speak in human terms and encounter others where they are. 4. INFJs are rather empathic, and they are generally “just know” happens . strong> One of my favorite one-liners from is by the character, Tyrion Lannister, and this can often be said of an INFJ, with maybe fewer libations. INFJs have a highly-accurate feel of intuition that “theyve been” sharping for all of their lives. Without understanding exactly why or how, an INFJ will see, within times of assembling private individuals, their true person. As a make, they tend to be more condone of their friends who exhibit unruly behavior because they can identify the true root of the behaviour, such as insecurities or past trauma. 5. INFJs eventually endeavour sincere true and propose . strong> This personality type does not care one iota about pretentious fables or exuberant gestures if there is not a true-life and sincere incentive behind them. An INFJ’s calling in life is to seek penetration and conclusion, and as they develop, they often can discern a lie or half-truth at a moment’s notice. If they accept private individuals to be a phony or a manipulator, they will have no trouble writing them off. Likewise, this type often experiences traveling, undertakings and knowledge that increase their understanding of the intricacies of life and promote self-reflection. 6. INFJs are true introverts, hitherto people not very close to them believe them to be extroverts . strong> This is happening because INFJs can be social chameleons and have an innate ability to blend in in any social established. “You Have a Letter Waiting for You!”
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Guest post by Kevin Manzel, director of content development, The Great Courses
Editor’s Note: January is National Mentoring Month! To celebrate, we’ve partnered with Cricket Media to share stories about the positive impact mentoring — especially eMentoring — can have on young people’s lives.
I have always been passionate about volunteerism — not because there was one specific cause I felt drawn to, but because of the gratification I derive from volunteering.
Some of my favorite memories from college were the hours I carved out of a busy study and work schedule to volunteer through our school’s Circle K chapter — the world’s largest student-led collegiate service organization. And more recently, when I was offered the opportunity to chair my company’s first-ever philanthropy program, I immediately accepted.
One initiative I championed within my company was Cricket Media’s CricketTogether program. It offered the ideal opportunity to take my professional passion for developing learning content for students of any age and applying it to a specific goal: increasing the reading and critical thinking skills of school-aged children.
I started with CricketMedia as part of their pilot program in spring 2017.
From the time first time I connected with the student I was to e-mentor, I was hooked. In his letter — this is one of the communication methods in CricketTogether — the student told me about his family, how he liked soccer and football, how he wanted to learn about woodworking because his dad was a carpenter. I was able to share my interest in sports, and also ask him to think about what he’d like to build if he were a carpenter. He gave me this exciting idea for a boat to rescue people stranded on an island. It was so heart-warming, yet showed how he was able to apply his dream to solving problems for others.
Once we’d built rapport over our families and interests, we read magazine articles together (virtually) and discussed them. Since I have a son the exact same age as my pen pal, it was both easy and fun to pick out what I found interesting, and then prod him with questions I knew would encourage creative thinking. Best of all, I looked forward to getting my e-mail notice that “You have a letter waiting for you!” He would always weave in a detail or two from one of my previous letters that let me know he wasn’t just doing an assignment; he was forging a friendship with me. Those are skills that he will take with him into the world that will serve him no matter where life takes him.
The program has been such an immediate smash hit at my company that we went from 43 volunteers in the first installment of the program in spring 2017 (already exceeding the request of 25) to an amazing 103 this past fall — nearly 50% of our entire company’s workforce!
I can’t emphasize enough the importance of being a mentor and taking advantage of the ease of opportunity afforded by the internet. With eMentoring, you don’t have to travel anywhere. And your student doesn’t have to be bussed or driven somewhere. You get the satisfaction of helping build a child’s skill levels and self-esteem without the pressure of him or her taking a test, speaking in front of the class, or risking embarrassment or being intimidated. And if your child doesn’t get attention at home, then you get to be that adult, one-on-one attention that every child craves, and every child deserves.
Who wouldn’t feel good about that and grow as a person from that experience?
Inspired by Kevin’s story? This National Mentoring Month, become an eMentor yourself! Check out CricketTogether or these mentoring volunteer opportunities to learn how you or your company can get involved.

16 Signs Youre An INFJ, The Worlds Rarest Personality Type
INFJ, from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument, is believed to be the rarest personality type, and to make up less than 2% of the population. Oh, and I am one . div>
Oskar Krawczyk
INFJ, referring to one of the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types, has become a bit of a buzzword in the media over the past several years.
The INFJ can be the life of the party for a night or two, showcasing their inviting mood and vivaciousness. Nonetheless, this is never prolonged because, in introverted-fashion, they lose exertion from others. Those close to an INFJ know that this type prefers bars over golf-clubs and barbecues over projectiles, and can give a speech of millions of beings but winces at the idea of combining with the crowd subsequently. Eventually, this kind will need to retreat home for some gentle is necessary to” recharge their batteries ,” or they will become very on-edge and exhausted.
7. INFJs have intense, unwavering convictions, sometimes to a fault . strong> An INFJ has certain intuitions about the world and a need to foster altered in society. These are deep-seated and intense notions that they will never abandon. If a occupation, affair, or ordinance does not align with their moral compass, an INFJ will have no qualms about discounting it or leaving it in the dust.
8. INFJs tend to keep a small circle of friends and prefer to work alone . strong> Although an INFJ may have hundreds of acquaintances, if they call you a “friend,” you can be sure that they represent it for life. This category can count their close friends on a determine of thumbs and they will be loyal and devoted to these prized men no matter how much occasion surpass between their interactions. An INFJ can be a great team player but the idea of group activities and partnership meets naturally obligate them settle down in their accommodate. These are people who enjoy working from residence or in a charming power with a handful of like-minded coworkers.
9. INFJs cannot stand small talk . strong> This mannerism aligns with the need to pursue reality and all things bona fide.
