I'm going to university now (in Germany) and the uni i'm at offers catalan as a side course. Tomorrow i'll finally be at an event where they introduce the subject among others. I'M SO EXCITED!!!!! ^^ Finally! >< Sadly, there won't be a class for catalan literature (omg actually - if you have recommendations of important works from the recent centuries, i'd love to hear, but i'm just rambling, no pressure xD). There will be linguistics and speech praxis. I can't wait! :D
That's great!! I hope you enjoy it very much ☺️
Some of the modern classics (from the late 19th century to the present):
L'Atlàntida (Atlantis, 1877) by Jacint Verdaguer. Epic poem that re-interprets history and legends. Jacint Verdaguer is the most representative poet of the Renaixença/Romanticism movement in Catalan literature.
Other poems by Jacint Verdaguer (1845-1902) and Joan Maragall (1860-1911) are the most important poetry of the Renaixença.
The theatre plays Terra Baixa (usually published in English with the title Martha of the Lowlands, 1896) by Àngel Guimerà. Also Mar i cel ("Sea And Sky", 1888) by him.
La febre d'or ("The gold fever", 1892) by Narcís Oller, the most representative of the realist movement.
The monologue La infanticida ("The Child Murderer", 1898) by Víctor Català (pseudonym of Caterina Albert). And her novel Solitud ("Loneliness", 1905), which is considered the most representative book of the modernist and naturalism movement in Catalan literature.
The satirical theatre plays by Santiago Rusiñol like L'auca del senyor Esteve (1917) —personally I really like his play El bon policia ("The Good Policeman", 1905).
The theatre play El cafè de la Marina ("The Marina Café, 1933) by Josep Maria de Segarra.
Poetry by Pere Quart (1899-1986)
La Plaça del Diamant (it has been translated to English with the titles In Diamond Square and The Time of the Doves, 1962) by Mercè Rodoreda. Her novels Mirall trencat ("Broken Mirror", 1974), La mort i la primavera (Death in Spring, 1986) and Aloma (1938) are also iconic.
The short stories books by Pere Calders, most famously Cròniques de la veritat oculta ("Chronicles of the Hidden Truth", 1955).
The short stories book El cafè de la Granota (1985) by Jesús Montcada,
Poetry: Josep Carner (1884-1970), J.V. Foix (1893-1987).
The novel Bearn, o la sala de les nines ("Bearn, Or The Doll Room", 1961) by Llorenç Villalonga.
Poetry: Vicent Andrés Estellés (1924-1993), Salvador Espriu (1913-1985), Maria Mercè Marçal (1952-1998), Miquel Martí i Pol (1929-2003).
The essays by Joan Fuster, most importantly Nosaltres, els valencians ("We, the Valencians", 1962).
Mecanoscrit del Segon Origen (Typescript of the Second Origin, 1974) and Totes les bèsties de càrrega ("All The Load Beasts"?, 1967) by Manuel de Pedrolo, also personally by him I really liked the sci-fi short stories collection Trajecte Final ("Final Journey", 1975), and I will add my dad would be upset if I didn't mention his theatre play Homes i no ("Men and no", 1957).
Incerta glòria (Uncertain Glory, 1971) by Joan Sales.
Les veus del Pamano (Voices of the Pamano, 2004) and Jo confesso (I Confess, 2011) by Jaume Cabré.
I know some of them, at least Jaume Cabré's novels, Àngel Guimerà's plays, Uncertain Glory, and some Mercè Rodoreda novels have been published in German and/or English. In fact, Voices of the Pamano was a huge success in Germany.
I hope you enjoy the class very much!

Love your fics and would you do one for Laura feirsinger something fluffy. ( Only if you write for her)
a/n: i wanted to write something for Feiersinger for a while so I'm more than happy with that request
"Say it"
Tumblr media
Pairing: Laura Feiersinger x AUSTRIAWNT!Reader
Summary: you just want to hear two words
Type: Fluff
Warning: nothing
word count: 1893
translation: Ich liebe dich/Je t'aime/Ti amo = I love you
-------
You and Laura knew each other from as far as you can remember. First, you played together at Bayern Munich before she left for Sand, and you left to play two seasons for Lyon before coming back to Munich. Your relationship had always been special; you were practically a couple even before she asked you out formally. But it was only a few months before her big move to Frankfurt that she found the courage to do it.
Since then, a lot of things have happened. You joined her in her new club and had to leave your commun best friend, Sarah Zadrazil, behind. And more importantly, you were officially engaged. But unfortunately, your fiancé signed a new contract with AS Roma in Italy, which meant you would spend almost the whole season missing her.
Fortunately for both of you, you were playing for the same national team, and with the new National League came a new national camp. And that was where you were today. The girls just arrived at the hotel when you were already looking for your fiancé. Since her transfer, there was something she never told you, and you needed to hear it now.
As expected by all your teammates, when you and Laura spotted each other, you didn't leave each other. It was not a secret to everyone how close you were, and some of them were used to making fun of it at first, but now it has become something usual.
"Where is Laura?" Barbara asked when she spotted a group of girls talking in Manu's room.
"With Y/n. Like always." The goalie replied.
"Why do I feel stupid to ask that?" The midfielder asked before walking to your room. She was about to knock, but she stopped when she heard something unusual.
"Oh, come on, babe, I know you can say it. It's been like, what? Six weeks since you started to train with them, I'm sure you can tell me now." You said while you were unpacking your stuff.
"We already talked about it, Y/n. I don't know if I'm ready for that." She replied.
"Bullshit." You said before throwing yourself on the bed and dragging the Roma's player with you. "We both know that I'll find it." You said before gently kissing her.
"Yeah, but let me time to prepare myself before."
"Okay, no pressure." You engulfed your body in her tiny ones, sharing as much warmth as you could. "I missed you." You confessed.
"And I missed you too. Now come on, let's get ready, or the girls will start to worry." She instructed you.
"Okay, but just five more minutes." Even if she knew she had to complain, she couldn't when she saw you so vulnerable.
On the other side of the door, your Frankfurt teammate was already not here. The midfielder rushed to her previous destination a few seconds earlier.
"Girls, I think we have a problem." She said bursting the door open.
"Don't you know how to know on a door?" Sarah Puntigam said after everyone was thrilled by the midfielder's antics.
"Sorry, not sorry, but we have a bigger problem than a fucking door." Barbara said.
"Don't swear in front of the kids." Sarah Z said covering Katharina's ears what made everyone laugh.
"Sorry, but yeah, I was saying that I think Laura and Y/n are breaking up." The new froze everyone and everything in the room for a few seconds.
"WHAT?" All the players yelled.
"Shh, keep it low." Barbara instructed them.
"How do you want us to keep it low when you announce something like that?" Sarah P said, gaining a nod from all her teammates. "And how did you get that information?"
"I may have or haven't heard their conversation when I was going to
see Laura." She explained.
"WHAT?" Everyone yelled again.
"You know how much Y/n hate when someone tries to invade her privacy, and it's even worse when it involves her and Laura." Manu reminded her.
"I know, but it's not like I wanted to listen on purpose. I will apologize later. Now can we talk about the main subject?"
"Oh, what are you talking about? I want to be in." You said, appearing behind your teammate. The room froze for a moment. You felt all eyes on you and started to feel a little confused. "Uh, are we interrupting something?" You asked.
"Nothing; we were just wondering where you were, right, girls?" Sarah P said trying to convince you and your fiancé. When you heard all the girls agreeing, you found it suspicious, but you were not going to question it, at least not now.
"Anyway, coach wants us in the meeting room in five minutes." Laura said, and after that, you both left to the room mentioned.
"I don't know about you, but they didn't seem to be near to break up for me." Kat said.
"I totally agree with you, but maybe they don't want to make us worry." Barbara proposed.
"Maybe, but right now the coach wants to see us, so let's go." Sarah Z said before leaving the room, quickly followed by the rest of the team.
In the room, the girls were a little shocked to see an empty seat between yours and Laura's. Even if they didn't question it, some glances were not discreet, and some whispers could be heard. The Bayern midfielder took her seat between the two of you while Barbara could finally talk with your fiancé.
At the end of the meeting, you were one of the first to leave the room. But you were quickly stopped by your ex-teammate.
"Hey, are you okay?" Sarah asked you.
"Uhh...yeah." You replied.
"Where are you going?"
You paused a little. "Restroom."
"Oh, okay, sorry. I'll not restrain you more." She said a little nervous, making you chuckle.
"Yep, I'll be back soon; don't worry." With that, you just walked away.
What should have been a little weird thing for your teammates became something more when the next day Laura decided to train with her best friend letting you with Kathy. You both didn't notice, but a lot of confused looks were exchanged between the entire team.
At the end of the training the Roma's player was leaving with her best friend when she heard you calling her name. She quickly glanced at you before quickly running away from you, forcing you to chase her.
"Okay, that's weird." Sarah P started.
"The most weird thing was that they were both smiling." Manu continued.
"Maybe Barbara was right." Viktoria finished.
"No, that's impossible. We all know how much they love each other; they can't just break up and keep the facade in front of us. We need to start an investigation." Sarah Z proposed, and everybody agreed.
A few hours later, you were watching a movie with all the team in your room. There was a good atmosphere, and everybody was enjoying the moment until your phone buzzed. You excused yourself and left the room to answer. In less than five minutes, you were back in the room and found your spot next to the tiny midfielder.
"Who was that?" Laura asked you quietly to not bother everyone.
"Oh, it was just Laura who wanted my advice for something." You replied, and your fiancé just nodded before she placed her head against your shoulder.
The next morning, the girls were planning a real plan to do everything they could to not let their favorite couple break apart when they heard someone run to them.
"Girls, please help me." Laura begged with an amused expression. The team didn't have time to process everything until you reached them.
"Okay, you know what? Let's do that in another way." You took a moment to think before you started again. "Okay, in English."
The entire team was looking at both of you very confusedly.
"Okay. 3...2...1... I love you!" You both said at the same time. The girls were more confused, but you didn't give them time to question anything before you started again. "Now, in Deutsch. 3...2...1... Ich liebe dich." You said again at the same time.
"What's happening here?" Barbara asked.
"Just a minute. Let me finish that." You return your focus to the tiny midfielder. "Now... Je t'aime." You saw her blush, which made you grin. "And?" There was a little silence; all the attention was now on Laura.
"Ti amo." She mumbled, but your face showed her that you didn't understand. She took a breath and focused her gaze on yours: "Ti. Amo. Is this okay now?"
Instead of replying, you hugged her and crashed your lips against hers. "More than okay." You said with the biggest smile you could ever put on your face right now.
"Okay, what's happening now? I thought you were about to break up. Why are you so lovey-dovey right now?" Manu asked.
"What are you talking about?" You asked, very surprised by her sentence.
"I heard you two talk the first day of the camp, and I thought that you were about to break up because she didn't want to do something or something like that." Barbara confessed.
"First, Barbara, you know that Y/n doesn't when you spy on her. Second, we never thought about breaking up; why could you ever think about it?" Laura explained.
"Wow, now we look stupid." Viktoria said.
"For your information, you always look stupid, like all of you." You said, making your fiancé laugh. "Except for Laura and Sarah Z, of course." You added.
"Okay, that's rude." Your captain said, "But can you explain what just happened?" Laura hid her face in your torso out of shame after remembering why you were both here.
"Oh, it's actually a funny story." You started. "You know that we have known each other since as far as I can remember. But we didn't always play together, so since I came back to Germany after my little trip to France, we decided to establish a rule in our relationship. Every time one of us has to play in another country, they have to learn the local language to say, I love you in this language." You explained.
"Why does that sound cute and dumb at the same time?" Viktoria whispered to your captain.
"Because it is, but she was the one who proposed that, and I can't refuse her anything, so here we are now." Laura defended you.
"But what does this have to do with your behavior from the start of the camp?" The Bayern Sarah asked.
"That's because she didn't want to say it. So I had to chase her everywhere to convince her to say it." You explained.
"I can't wait for the wedding. I would be personally offended if Y/n don't do something dumb like this on  D-day. Manu said.
When the girls started to ask more questions, the coach called you for training. On your way to the pitch, you had your fingers intertwined with Laura's when she suddenly stopped making you look at her.
Fortunately for you, you didn't have to say anything because she didn't give you time to react before she kissed you. "Ti amo." She said before letting your hand go and running on the pitch.
"Wait, can we get married like today?" You asked while you ran after her.

History:
Northern accent
Garth's parents are geologists and biologists from Birmingham, UK, they are typically old-fashioned and stubborn intellectuals. Influenced by his parents, Garth has rich natural knowledge and a northern English accent.
During the gold rush around 1900, Mr. Igneous and his wife come to Alaska with their 18-year-old son Hull, 16-year-old daughter Liz and 10-year-old Garth for research. Along with them is Jason Stamford, 26, a tutor for the children. The young Garth is in need of his parents, but the couple's work is very busy, they entrust Jason with the task of taking care of Garth and teaching him to read and write.
Tumblr media
A mild person
Jason is a talented young man with a major in paleontology. He was once a student of Garth's father. Because of polio, his left leg muscles atrophy and he can only walk with a walking stick. Various complications lead to his weakness and emaciation. But this does not kill his tenderness and love of life. These beautiful virtues also deeply influenced Garth.
Tumblr media
As a sickly child, Garth does not like the outdoors, so he spends a lot of time with Jason in addition to attending classes. The two talk like father and son, read books and learn the piano, and their bond grows.
When Garth turns 18, he boldly confesses his hot, confused admiration to Jason. Jason also likes the studious and enthusiastic boy, but the work ethic makes him turn him down. Jason, who is also gay, does not criticize Garth's unusual sexuality, but encourages him to be himself and not go against his will.
But Garth's parents see all this, and they fire Jason. Garth has a big fight with his parents.
Jason returns home to Manchester in poor health, but keeps up a close correspondence with Garth, offering gentle advice on the young man's troubles and doubts. Jensen died three years later, when Garth is 22.
To escape a marriage
In 1919, when Garth is 25 years old, he has a very heated argument with his parents about his professional planning. His parents have arranged work and marriage for him in detail and ask him to marry the daughter of a local investor in order to obtain academic financial support. Garth impulsively tells them his sexual orientation and desire for freedom. His parents are very angry, abuse Jason for instilling bad illusion into his son. In a rage, Garth packs up and leaves home.
Half of year ago, Garth's parents meet Anderson Hastings (27) from the south of the US. This handsome and wealthy young man is looking for the assistance of experts in geology and biology for his career. He is gorgeous in clothes and spokes appropriately and is soon recognized by the Ignoneus family. The two young people meet and become intimate.
Tumblr media
Garth runs away from home and goes to Anderson. Anderson soon takes Garth on a cruise ship to the Soviet Union for a business trip.
Anderson never hides his sexual orientation and introduces Garth as his boyfriend which makes Garth feel safe. But what Garth doesn't expect is that Anderson just takes him as a property could show off.
In addition, Anderson is a control freak playboy. He believes that love is only a trade. He provides his boyfriends with luxurious living conditions, and the only thing the boys need to do is following his arrangement. He thinks that Garth's idea of finding a spiritual partner is very boring and meaningless.
白月光Bright moonlight
In that time, the phenomenon of money-laundering through academic research projects becoming popular among the rich. Most of the people Anderson takes Garth to see are such dandies. The days on the cruise ship are extravagant and chaotic. Garth feels helpless and disgusted at the atmosphere. Andrei Berekov (23) appears during this time.
Tumblr media
Andrei is the quietest member of the group of Soviet scholars. While everyone drinks and socialize, he would sit in a quiet corner and write alone. Garth finds out that Andre, like himself, is also the one who has false expectations for this so-called academic trip. Moreover, Garth is shocked by his knowledge of botany (although Andre's accent makes it difficult for them to communicate).
Contrary to Anderson, the gentle Andre can always see the flash in Garth's soul. He respects every inspiration and idea of Garth and can turn every chat into a friendly and meaningful academic discussion. This is the kind of relationship state that Garth has been pursuing.
At the same time, the relationship between Garth and Anderson is disintegrating. Anderson arranges cocktail party bender to introduce Garth to celebrities in the academic circle. He buys ways for Garth to publish his unfinished paper and plans everything for him without authorization. The only thing Garth needs to do is being a good boy to flatter Anderson. All this violates Garth's principles. They row again and again and break up.
Then Andre and Garth fall in love. He introduces Garth to his family and live together in his hometown in Belarus for some time. Later, the two decide to go to the University of Edinburgh for master's degree in plant taxonomy.
Tumblr media
A year and a half later, they graduate. Andre proposes to Garth at the graduation ceremony. After secretly exchanging rings, the two men embark on a trip to the Arctic Circle.
Tumblr media
Riding under the aurora
In 1923, the two men come to Yukon, Canada, and have a dispute with another group of fur hunters and they are maliciously retaliated. Andre is beaten to death. After being cut off his genitals, his body is hung in a tree and displayed with an "I'm a sodomite" sign around his neck. Garth is imprisoned and forced to watch his lover's body being eaten by crows in the aurora of the polar night. A few days later, with his last breath, he escapes, rides all the way south, and is finally saved.
Tumblr media
The mad dog of Yukon
This nightmare experience is a great blow to him, and the cruel torture leaves a huge ugly scar on his right scalp and countless scars on his body. He suffers from serious bipolar disorder, self-mutilation, and suicidal tendencies. He used to be a very gentle and humorous man, but now he has become an infamous one and gets the nickname of Yukon mad dog.
It is rumored that Garth finds the hunting team that hurt him years ago and retaliated against them with extremely cruel methods, but, the police let him stay in prison for only a short time because of his mental problems.
It's just a rumor. No one knows what Garth does to them. People just never see those people again in the Yukon.
Tumblr media
Dangerous game
Although Garth's mental problems are very serious and his behavior is very uncontrollable, it is indisputable that he is the most outstanding wolf hunting expert in this area. In 1932, he is invited to join a hunting team. They plan to go south to hunt large prey for fur.
In early winter, Garth meets Hart, a forest ranger. Hart's merciless attack drives the team out of the forest, while the gloomy and fierce ranger attracts Garth's attention. He thinks it is all good to kill him or be killed by him.
Garth soon finds that although the ranger's attack is fierce and threatening, he doesn't seem to really want to kill them. Garth leaves the team, returns to the cabin alone, and begins to test Hart's patience by taking the initiative to attack. Hart responds to his attack almost immediately.
As Garth thought, Hart does not intend to kill him - each shot wipes his cheek and flies over, only a few centimeters away.
Garth almost immediately indulges in this dangerous game.
Hart's reaction satisfies him - his counterattack would not only really pose a threat to himself, but also could excite Garth. Although Garth himself knows that this morbid emotion originates from the psychological shadow leaves in his heart when he faces death, which makes him afraid, manic, want to cry, want to laugh, it is the only time that he could feel alive.

Freak couple
However, this absurd and dangerous duel does not end with the death of one party. On a snowy day, Hart forces Garth to a dead end, but he doesn't pull the trigger, just askes him why he does it. Garth cries and laughs, says he wants to die.
Hart turns and leaves.
Garth couldn't figure out why Hart has so many chances to kill him but doesn't do it. Hatred and fear have been burning in his heart for too long, burning the grassland of his inner world to black. However, from that day on, he could feel that a beam of light comes in through the black smoke, and something is slowly sprouting again.
The process of rebuilding trust is very long.
They do not have any detailed communication and exchange and do not mention the inexplicable gun battle. The two freaks just share a bonfire, say a few words, and then naturally act together.
Garth knows that nature also has many strange partners, such as raven and jackal, Greater Honeyguide and honey badger. Some partners can even act together all their lives. Even if one party dies, the other will not find a new one. Maybe they are such animals, too.

A Crimson Peak Timeline
(based on the art book, documents shown onscreen in the movie, and the character bios GDT wrote- where the bios don't contradict film canon. I've attempted to combine the two where contradicting elements are unavoidable.
Sometime during the reign of Charles II (1660-1685). Edward Sharpe created Baronet for services to the crown in providing clay for construction projects. Allerdale Hall built in the parish of Above Derwent, Cumberland, England.
1841. Carter Everett Cushing born the second son of six in an impoverished family that traveled the eastern US for his father's masonry business.
1863. Beatrice Alexandra Chetwynde, eldest daughter of a large, wealthy family, marries Baronet James William Sharpe. The marriage is contracted solely for the Chetwyndes' land, which adjoins the Sharpe estate.
April 1, 1865. Lucille Sharpe born.
Sometime between 1865 and ~1873. Carter marries 18-year-old socialite Eleanor Wyndham-Beckford, to the immense disapproval of her family. Though she is disowned and the couple struggles to make ends meet for years, Carter ultimately becomes a successful developer.
February 18, 1867. Thomas Sharpe born.
C. 1867-1872. The Sharpes employ a wet nurse- and later nanny -named Theresa, who would become the only adult to care about the children in their lives. She would ultimately be sacked after Beatrice caught young Lucille snuggling with her for warmth on a winter's night (on the grounds that a noble child should not be close with servants- a "crime" for which Lucille was beaten severely).
1876. 11-year-old Lucille murders her father with poison distilled from mine tailings, after he took Thomas on a hunting trip and left him in the woods to die of exposure.
Late 1876? A mining vein near Allerdale Hall collapses, killing several child mine-workers. I could have sworn I read somewhere that James foolishly dug a mining tunnel under the house shortly before his death, and that's what destabilized it, but I can't find it now.
October 9, 1877. Edith M. Cushing born, after Eleanor had suffered several miscarriages.
1878. Thomas and Lucille begin a secret sexual relationship.
Early August, 1879. Beatrice catches Lucille and Thomas together; Lucille murders her to keep their secret. The siblings try to run away together but are caught and brought back. Thomas is sent to live with an aunt and uncle in Whitehaven (who in turn send him to boarding school), while Lucille is forced into a mental institution.
Probably summer, 1885. Thomas finishes his schooling and rescues Lucille; they return to Allerdale.
1887. The Sharpe siblings travel to London seeking investors for Thomas' venture to reopen the mines. A wealthy, terminally ill gentleman, Major Richard Upton, takes a liking to Thomas and begs Thomas to marry his disabled daughter, Pamela. At Lucille's urging- since they're running out of both options and money -Thomas agrees. The two attempt to poison Pamela to death, but Lucille ends up strangling her instead.
Sometime between October 1887 and October 1888. Eleanor Cushing dies of cholera and appears to Edith as a ghost.
Early-mid 1890s. Carter and the recently widowed Mrs. McMichael have a brief flirtation that both Edith and Eunice oppose. Though it goes nowhere, the rift between the two girls is never healed.
Late October or November 1892. Edith (age 15) becomes infatuated with a 25-year-old poet who is having marital difficulties. After convincing Carter to hire him as a tutor, all unknowing, she confesses her feelings to him. He not only takes his leave of the Cushing family, but of Buffalo itself, quickly moving away with his wife and children.
1893. The Sharpes travel to Edinbrugh, where Thomas again finds no investors but does attract the attention of a 36-year-old widow of means, Margaret McDermott. Once again, he marries her and helps Lucille poison her, though she is ultimately killed via blunt force trauma.
Summer 1893. Edith asks her best friend, Alan McMichael, to kiss her so she can write about kisses more accurately. It means nothing to her, but sparks an unrequited passion in Alan
1896. Lucille falls pregnant by Thomas. He travels with her to Italy, which he loves and she despises. There he meets a wealthy woman named Enola Sciotti, widowed and bereaved of her only child, and decides of his own accord to marry and murder her in their usual fashion. The Sharpes and Enola return to Allerdale.
1897. Lucille is delivered of a son, who may or may not be sickly. Enola tries to care for her and the child, promising she can save him. The baby either dies of natural causes or Lucille smothers him under the conviction that his cries mean something is terribly wrong with him and he can't live- this is one contradiction in the bios vs. the movie that I prefer to leave vague, since it's possible not even Lucille remembers what happened. Either way, she blames Enola and dispatches her by unknown means. Thomas patents his excavating machine.
Late summer(?) 1901. Alan returns from studying medicine in London and sets up an ophthalmology practice in Buffalo. Edith's debut novel, Figures In The Mist, is rejected for publication by Oglivie and Sons. Thomas seeks investment in the mines from Cushing and Co., unsuccessfully. Edith and the Sharpes begin a friendship. Edith sees her mother's ghost for the second time.
September 14, 1901. President William McKinley dies after being shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. I include this because the fact that the movie doesn't is hilarious to me.
October 21, 1901. At the Cushings' dinner party, Carter bribes the Sharpes to leave, instructing Thomas to break Edith's heart or he'll tell her about the marriage to Pamela. A deleted scene reveals that he was on the verge of relenting and investing in the mines when he read the private investigator's report.
October 22, 1901. Lucille murders Carter at his club, then departs to return to England. Thomas and Edith become engaged.
Late October-early November 1901. Thomas and Edith are married and travel to Allerdale.
November-December 1901 (possibly into early 1902?). The rest of the movie's plot.

My dear Watson, I write these few lines through the courtesy of Mr. Moriarty, who awaits my convenience for the final discussion of those questions which lie between us. He has been giving me a sketch of the methods by which he avoided the English police and kept himself informed of our movements. They certainly confirm the very high opinion which I had formed of his abilities. I am pleased to think that I shall be able to free society from any further effects of his presence, though I fear that it is at a cost which will give pain to my friends, and especially, my dear Watson, to you. I have already explained to you, however, that my career had in any case reached its crisis, and that no possible conclusion to it could be more congenial to me than this. Indeed, if I may make a full confession to you, I was quite convinced that the letter from Meiringen was a hoax, and I allowed you to depart on that errand under the persuasion that some development of this sort would follow. Tell Inspector Patterson that the papers which he needs to convict the gang are in pigeonhole M., done up in a blue envelope and inscribed “Moriarty.” I made every disposition of my property before leaving England, and handed it to my brother Mycroft. Pray give my greetings to Mrs. Watson, and believe me to be, my dear fellow, — Very sincerely yours, Sherlock Holmes

Thanks for the tag @elodiah
Because it's almost Halloween, and I'm unlikely to finish this by tomorrow, I give you a snippet from the Lokius versus H H Holmes shenanigans (read: horrors) that's currently eating my tasty brains.
No-pressure-tagging @kcscribbler @lokimobius @thosegayoldmen @wolfpup026 @loki-is-my-kink-awakening @mobiusismycomfortcharacter @mobiusisawholemood @devilbearingtrouble and anyone else who sees this omg what are usernames even 😘🎃
---
"The hotel," said Mobius, a muscle jumping right above his jawline. "Which, yes, he actually ran it as a hotel, man's gotta earn his living somehow, can't just keep it for funsies— was finished in 1892. In 1893…"
Casey raised his hand. "The Chicago World Fair."
Mobius pressed his chin to his sternum, placing his hands on his hips. "Exactly. He called it the World's Fair Hotel by that time. He'd put ads in the paper right next to articles about the fair, making people assume it was officially connected to the event. Thousands of people went missing during the months the fair was open and there's no telling how many of those he murdered. He confessed to hundreds, but."
A cold hand closed around Loki's spine. Everything about Mobius' demeanour was coiled tight and ready to spring. This was no ordinary mission. "Mobius?"
Mobius lifted his eyes from the floor, jaw moving into a set line. "He had lyme pits. In the basement. And two incinerators for cremating human remains, he— sold fully assembled skeletons to pharmacies and universities, to doctor's offices. No guessing where he got the base components."
B-15 shifted in her seat by the conference room table. Casey stared at the blackboard, with Mobius' tangled jottings painting an increasingly vivid picture.
Loki leaned forward, trying to draw Mobius' gaze. He kept his voice low-pitched. Soft, even. "…and Timely is in danger why, exactly?"
"Because birds of a feather flock together."

“I can’t forget that wonderful moment!
Now you are both joy and peace for me!
You are my dreams, hopes, inspiration
From now on my life is filled with You.
In you, my friend, there is still a strong memory,
You can't forget your past,
But on your lips there already burns a confession
And your heart wants to love again!
And I love you! I will warm you up so much!
In my arms you will come alive again.
You will then take pity on my tenderness
And maybe you won’t push me away anymore!”

I don't have any strong feelings towards him whatsoever. He certainty doesn't occupy mind my 24/7 and I also don't talk about him all the time, that would be a pretty dumb thing to do for just some random nerdy looking guy. In fact I don't even know who he is, who is this man. Why is he on this list?
9. Oliver Putnam
Tumblr media
If I had a nickel for every time my favourite character in a show ended up being the small angry theatre producer called Oliver (see above). I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it's happened twice.
Meme aside. If you haven't seen Only Murders In The Building, do yourself a favour and watch it. It is so amazing and Oliver is just a fantastic character in it.
10. Robin
Tumblr media
Him ❤️ This list wouldn't feel complete without him. He's just the best silly goofy guy around.

VENERABLE BARSANUPHIUS OF OPTINA (1913)
Tumblr media
Paul I. Plikhanov was born in the city of Samara on July 5,1845, the son of John and Natalia Plikhanov. His mother died in childbirth, and his father later remarried so that his son would have a mother. Although his stepmother was very strict, she was a real mother to him, and he loved her very much.
As a descendant of the Orenburg Cossacks, Paul was enrolled in the Polotsk Cadet Corps. He completed his studies at the Orenburg Military School and received an officer’s commission. He later graduated from the Petersburg Cossack Staff Officers’ School, and also served at the headquarters of the Kazan military district and eventually rose to the rank of colonel.
Once, as he was sick with pneumonia, Paul sensed that he was about to die. He asked his orderly to read the Gospel to him, and passed out. Then he had a vision in which the heavens seemed to open, and he was afraid because of the great light. His whole sinful life passed before him, and he was overcome with repentance. A voice told him he should go to Optina Monastery, but the doctors did not think he would recover. His health did improve, however, and the colonel visited Optina. In August 1889 the Elder of the Monastery was Saint Ambrose (October 10), who told Paul to set his worldly affairs in order. Two years later, Saint Ambrose blessed him to cut all ties to the world and told him to enter Optina within three months.
It was not easy for the colonel to resign his commission within the specified three month period, because obstacles were placed in his way. In fact, he was offered a promotion to the rank of general, and was asked to delay his retirement. Some people even tried to arrange a marriage for him, laughing at his intention to go to the monastery. Only his stepmother was happy that he wished to become a monk. On the very last day of the three months he concluded his affairs and arrived at Optina. However, Saint Ambrose was already laid out in his coffin in the church.
Saint Anatole I (January 25) succeeded Father Ambrose as Elder, and he assigned Paul to Hieromonk Nectarius (April 29) as his cell attendant. He was accepted as a novice in 1892, and tonsured as a rassophore in 1893. Over the next ten years he advanced through the various stages of monastic life, including ordination as deacon (1902), and as priest (1903). The monk Paul was secretly tonsured into the mantiya in December of 1900 because of a serious illness. When they asked him what name he wished to receive, he said it did not matter. They named him in honor of Saint Barsanuphius of Tver and Kazan (April 11). Although he recovered, they did not give him the mantiya until December of 1902 after the Liturgy when it was revealed that he had been tonsured on his sickbed.
On September 1, 1903 Father Barsanuphius was appointed to assist Elder Joseph, the skete Superior, in the spiritual direction of the skete brethren and the sisters of the Shamordino convent.
At the beginning of the Russo-Japanese war in 1904, Father Barsanuphius was sent to the Far East as a military chaplain, where he ministered to wounded soldiers. The war ended in August 1905, and Saint Barsanuphius returned to Optina on November 1, 1905.
Since Elder Joseph had become too old and frail to administer the skete’s affairs, Father Barsanuphius was appointed as Superior of the skete in his place. Father Barsanuphius soon reestablished order and discipline, paid off debts, repaired buildings, etc. As Superior, he combined strictness with paternal concern and tenderness for those under him.
Saint Barsanuphius, like the other Elders of Optina, possessed the gifts of clairvoyance and of healing people afflicted with physical and spiritual ailments. One of his spiritual sons, Father Innocent Pavlov, recalled his first Confession with the Elder. He became fearful because Father Barsanuphius seemed to know his innermost thoughts, reminding him of people and events which he had forgotten. The saint spoke gently and told him that it was God who had revealed to him these things about Father Innocent. “During my lifetime, do not tell anyone about what you are experiencing now,” he said, “but you may speak of it after my death.”
Saint Barsanuphius loved spiritual books, especially the Lives of the Saints. He often told people that those who read these Lives with faith benefit greatly from doing so. The answers to many of life’s questions can be found by reading the Lives of the Saints, he said. They teach us how to overcome obstacles and difficulties, how to stand firm in our faith, and how to struggle against evil and emerge victorious. Although the Lives of the Saints were widely available, it saddened the Elder that more people did not read them.
Tumblr media
Saint Barsanuphius commemorated many saints each day during his Rule of prayer, and this was not accidental. Each saint, he once explained, had some particular importance in his life. If, for example, some significant event took place, he would look to see which saints were commemorated on that day, then he would begin to commemorate them each day. Later he noticed that on their Feast Day, they would often deliver him from some danger or trouble. On December 17, 1891, the commemoration of the Prophet Daniel and the three holy youths, he left Kazan and never returned. That was the day he decided to leave the world, and Saint Barsanuphius felt that God had delivered him from a furnace of passions. Just as the three youths were delivered from the fiery furnace because they would not bow down before idols, the Elder always believed that he left the world unharmed because he refused to bow down before the idols of lust, pride, gluttony, etc.
By 1908, Saint Barsanuphius seemed to fall ill more frequently, and began to speak of his approaching death. In April of that year, someone sent him a package containing the Great Schema. Father Barsanuphius had long desired to be tonsured into the Great Schema before his death, but he had told no one of this except for the archimandrite. Therefore, he regarded this as a sign that he would soon die.
One night in July 1910, the Elder became so ill that he had to leave church during Vigil and return to his cell. The next morning, July 11, he was so weak that he could not sit up by himself. That evening he was tonsured into the Great Schema.
Father Barsanuphius began to recover, but there were new problems in the monastery. New monks came in from spiritually lax environments. They did not understand the ascetical nature of monasticism or the whole notion of eldership, and so they began to clamor for reform and change. They wanted to assume positions of authority, and to close the skete. Because of their complaints, Father Barsanuphius was removed from Optina and assigned as igumen of the Golutvinsky Monastery. When he arrived to take up his duties, Father Barsanuphius found the monastery in a state of physical and spiritual decline. Nevertheless, he did not lose heart, and soon the monastery began to revive. More people began to visit, once they heard that an Optina Elder had come to Goluvinsky, and the monastery’s financial position also began to improve. However, the rebellious brethren caused him great sorrow, and he had to expel some of them
At the beginning of 1913, Saint Barsanuphius became ill again and asked Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow for permission to retire to Optina, but that was not to be. He fell asleep in the Lord on April 1, and his body remained in the church of Golotvino until April 6 (which was also Lazarus Saturday). After the funeral, his body was placed on a train and sent to Optina for burial. The train arrived at Kozelsk Station on April 8, and the coffin was carried to Optina by clergy.
The Moscow Patriarchate authorized local veneration of the Optina Elders on June 13, 1996. The work of uncovering the relics of Saints Leonid, Macarius, Hilarion, Ambrose, Anatole I, Barsanuphius and Anatole II began on June 24/July 7, 1998 and was concluded the next day. However, because of the church Feasts (Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, etc.) associated with the actual dates of the uncovering of the relics, Patriarch Alexey II designated June 27/July 10 as the date for commemorating this event. The relics of the holy Elders now rest in the new church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.
The Optina Elders were glorified by the Moscow Patriarchate for universal veneration on August 7, 2000.
VENERABLE GERONTIUS, YOUTH, CANONARCH OF THE KIEV CAVE (14th.c.)
Tumblr media
Saint Gerontius lived during the fourteenth century. He was a monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery and fulfilled the obedience of canonarch (leader of church singing). He spent all his life at the monastery, in ascetic deeds of abstinence, obedience, and prayer.
Saint Gerontius was buried in the Far Caves. His memory is celebrated also together with the Synaxis of the Saints of the Far Caves, on August 28.

EPHESIANS 5:9-19
9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light." 15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
MARK 9:17-31
17 Then one of the crowd answered and said, "Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. 18 And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not. 19 He answered him and said, "O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me." 20 Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. 21 So He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. 23 Jesus said to him, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes." 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it: "Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!" 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, "He is dead." 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" 29 So He said to them, "This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting." 30 Then they departed from there and passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it. 31 For He taught His disciples and said to them, "The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day."

SAINT OF THE DAY (October 16)
Tumblr media
On October 16, we celebrate the feast of St. Gerard Majella.
St. Gerard was born on 6 April 1726 as the son of a tailor. He grew up about fifty miles south of Naples in Muro Lucano, Italy, in a large, poor family.
When Gerard was only 12, his father Dominic Majella entered eternal rest. Upon the death of his father, his mother, beholden to poverty, sent Gerard away to live with his uncle.
Gerard thereafter became an apprentice to a tailor. This tailor treated him well; however, the foreman treated him poorly.
After serving as a sewing apprentice for a couple years, he instead became a servant in the household of the bishop of Lacedonia, who was a cantankerous master.
Upon the death of the bishop in 1745, he returned home. At the age of 21, he became a journeyman.
He split his earnings for his mother and the poor, and made offerings for the holy souls in purgatory. Afterwards, he opened his own tailor shop.
At a young age, Gerard tried to join the local Capuchins, but he was turned down twice due to his youth and poor health.
He also tried to become a hermit but that too was not God's will for him.
He then entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in 1749 and professed of perpetual vows under the Redemptorist's founder, Saint Alphonsus Liguori, in 1751.
He served as tailor and infirmarian. He became known for his extraordinary supernatural gifts of bilocation, prophecy, ecstasies, visions, and infused knowledge.
Though not ordained to the holy order of priest, his spiritual direction and advice were sought by many among the clergy and communities of nuns, to which he also gave conferences.
He was most successful in converting sinners. He was also widely known for his sanctity and charity.
In 1754, he was calumniated and accused of lechery by a woman named Neria Caggiano.
Caggiano later admitted her charge was a lie. Even before she admitted to her falsehood, Gerard did not deny her charges.
As these charges were still up in the air, his superiors became suspicious, so they put him under surveillance and excluded him from communion for months until the girl admitted that she had lied.
When asked by Saint Alphonsus why he had kept silent in such circumstances, Gerard replied that he thought such patience was required in the face of unjust accusations.
As he bore this calumny with such humility and patience, Saint Alphonsus said, "Brother Gerard is a saint."
Gerard was sent to Naples soon after, but when the house was inundated by visitors wanting to see him, he was sent to Caposele a few months later.
He served as the porter there and ministered to the poor of the town. He spent the last few months of his life raising funds for new buildings at Caposele.
Just prior to his death, he visited his friends, the Pirofalo family. One of the daughters ran and called after him as he left the home, as he dropped his handkerchief.
Speaking through the gift of prophecy, he replied, "Keep it. It will be useful to you someday."
Years down the road, when this young woman was in danger of childbirth, she recalled these words of St. Gerard and requested the handkerchief.
The handkerchief was applied to her, thus a miracle: her pain immediately ceased and she gave birth to a healthy child.
St. Gerard died of tuberculosis on 16 October 1755 at the age of 29 in Caposele.
He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 29 January 1893. He was canonized by Pope Saint Pius X on 11 December 1904.
He is the patron saint of mothers, motherhood, expectant mothers, childbirth, children, pregnant women, unborn children, the pro-life movement, the falsely accused, good confessions, and lay brothers.

ANTON WOOD
1892
Anton Wood, 11 year-old psychopath almost hanged for murder, age in photo 12.
In November of 1892, young Joseph Smith was hunting with Anton Woode, 11, on the Woode family ranch near Denver when he was shot in the back and killed by Woode. When Anton was arrested, he immediately confessed and told authorities he shot Smith because he envied the boy’s gold watch and chain.
Woode’s first trial ended in a hung jury when the jury couldn’t come to a unanimous decision on the boy’s sanity.
During his second trial, however, he was found guilty of second-degree murder on March 24, 1893 and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, or just 25 years, (the newspaper accounts differ). His insanity defense was supported by testimony from a doctor who concluded that because Anton drank coffee, as a boy, it likely lowered his “mental constitution,” leading to his “insanity.”
The following article details Anton Woode’s reaction over hearing the guilty verdict.
DENVER, COLO, special: Anton Woode, the 11-year-old murderer of Joseph Smith, was convicted of murder in the second degree. The Jury was out sixteen hours and little Anton came near being sent to the gallows. The stubbornness of one juryman saved him. When the verdict was read in court, Anton wept. He thought the verdict meant hanging for him, and he expressed his regret for not murdering Smith’s two companions that were with him on the day that Smith was killed.
Little Anton looked viciously at Alexander Pecker, the principal witness against him, and said: “If I had plugged that [obscenity] nobody would know nothing about the thing at all.” The lad was then taken to the sheriff’s office, and the first thing that attracted his attention was the rogues’ gallery. He called the sheriff over, and, pointing to the photographs of the dead body of a desperado dangling from a telegraph pole, said: “I suppose that’s what you going to do with me? Well, I’ll fool you.”
The sheriff assured the lad that he would be only confined in jail. This satisfied him. The idea of getting enough to eat and having no work to do tickled him.
“In the West,” The Farmer’s Leader, Canton, South Dakota, March 31, 1893, page two.
He may have been wrong about having no work to do. Another source reported that Woode was sentenced to 25 years of hard labor.
On January 23, 1900, Woode and three other convicts escaped from the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City after one of the men, Thomas Reynolds, stabbed to death a captain of the guards. The four men split up into two groups, and Woode and his accomplice, Kid Wallace, were captured two days later. Reynolds was captured one day after Wallace and Woode. When a posse was leading Reynolds back to the prison, an angry mob followed and snatched Reynolds when he was just outside prison walls.
Reynolds, who knew what was coming, told his captors: “If they start to make trouble for me up there, just put a bullet through me. I don’t want to be hanged.”
Nobody put a bullet through him and the mob lynched him instead. The fourth man in the escape, Bill Wagoner, was rumored to have been lynched but this went unconfirmed by newspapers from that era.
Special Thanks to John Johnson of Colorado.

OTD in Music History: French composer-pianist Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) travels to Belgium in 1893. While there, he will play excerpts from a new masterpiece that he has just began working on -- his epochal opera "Pelleas et Melisande" (1902) -- for the famous violinist-composer Eugene Ysaye (1858 - 1931) in Brussels, before traveling on to Ghent to visit with famed poet and playwright Maurice Maeterlinck (1862 - 1949). Why had Debussy come all that way to see Maeterlinck? Maeterlinck's plays were tremendously popular in avant-garde Parisian circles of the 1890's -- they were anti-naturalistic in both their content and style, forsaking external drama for a focus on symbolic expression and internal struggle -- and, perhaps not surprisingly, it was in Maeterlinck's "Pelleas et Melisande" (1892) that Debussy finally found the ideal opera libretto for which he had been searching since the mid-1880's. In an 1902 article entitled, "Why I Wrote ‘Pelleas,’" Debussy explained the appeal of this work: "The drama of 'Pelleas' -- which, despite its dream-like atmosphere, contains far more humanity than those so-called ‘real-life documents’ -- seemed to suit my intentions admirably. In it, there is an evocative language whose sensitivity could readily be extended into music and into the orchestral backcloth..." Debussy approached Maeterlinck in August 1893 about setting "Pelleas" to music. By the time Maeterlinck granted his permission a month later, however, Debussy had already begun work -- and so he quickly made plans to go see Maeterlinck in person to thank him. Debussy described Maeterlinck at that initial meeting as like a "shy girl meeting an eligible young man," but the two quickly warmed up to each other. Unfortunately, their budding friendship would not last forever, however... PICTURED: A printed copy of the 2nd Edition (1907) piano-vocal score of Debussy's "Pelleas" (1907), which he has signed and inscribed to an admirer in 1909.
The affair ended when “Le Figaro” newspaper published a letter from Maeterlinck two weeks before the April 1902 world premiere of the opera, in which he completely disavowed it as "a work that is strange and hostile to me” and averred that he could “only wish for its immediate and decided failure upon the stage.” (It wasn’t a failure, but it wasn’t an immediate and resounding success, either.) Maeterlinck didn’t see the work until 1920, two years after Debussy's death. He was blown away, and later confessed that "in this affair I was entirely wrong and Debussy was a thousand times right." Today, “Pelleas” is widely hailed as a landmark in the history of 20th Century “classical” music and is regarded one of the greatest and most unique operas ever composed.
POSTSCRIPT: The trouble between Maeterlinck and Debussy arose just as rehearsals for the world premiere of Debussy’s operatic adaptation were getting underway, nearly a decade after the men first met in Ghent. Maeterlinck wanted the title role of Melisande to go to his longtime lover, who later claimed that Debussy had staged several rehearsals with her and was "thrilled with my interpretation.” Privately, however, Debussy apparently confided in a friend that "not only does she sing out of tune, she somehow actually *speaks* out of tune.” The role instead went to a noted Scottish soprano named Mary Garden (1874 - 1967).
Maeterlinck only learned of Garden's casting when it was announced in the press; he was furious, and immediately took legal action to prevent the opera from going ahead. When this effort failed—which was inevitable, since Maeterlinck had given Debussy his written authorization to stage the opera in any way that Debussy saw fit—Maeterlinck promptly made a trip to Debussy’s Parisian flat for the stated purpose of giving Debussy "a few good whacks to teach him some manners." When Maeterlinck broke in and threatened Debussy with his walking stick, Debussy sank prostrate into an armchair as his wife screamed and rushed over to revive him with smelling salts. Maeterlinck was so disgusted by this “unmanly” reaction that he abandoned his plans to thrash Debussy and left of his own accord, allegedly muttering: “All crazy, all sick, these musicians!”

Word count: 1.5k (7 mins read)
Characters: Ominis Gaunt, Sebastian Sallow.
Summary
Ominis searches the Room of Requirement for clues about the Collector and finds a strange book. When Sebastian confesses to his friend that he kissed Livia, the two Slytherin boys have an altercation that threatens their friendship's solidity.
Read the next chapter below.
Song list: We Are, by Hollywood Undead.
Ominis | Hogwarts, Early October, 1893.
The Room of Requirement has many seams, all of which Ominis spoors with the tip of his wand first, then with the pad of his fingers.
Aside from the standing mirror—that he is careful not to touch, for he knows this is how the entity gathers precious information on his marks—the room harbors a timeworn mahogany wainscoting, curls of flaking wallpaper and a kingdom of cobwebs lorded over by broods of scuttling spiders.
Cleaving through the stringy meshwork with his wand, Ominis searches and prods and pricks for a loose stitch in the Collector's cunning tapestry.
Soon, Sebastian and Livia will return from their trip to Hogsmeade and Ominis isn't eager to confess his solitary visits to the Room of Requirement.
Three he has made so far. Not only to poke holes in the veil of ignorance, but also to find a way to prevent entry to the Collector's twisted realm altogether.
If the entity can spin a nightmare on the loom of bliss, what can it weave with more sinister emotions?
For an hour, the Slytherin follows knots in the wood to inevitable dead ends; presses against the weathered paneling in search of a hidden contraption that could shift the walls; gropes his way along barbed edges and errant splinters, sighing in annoyance at his lack of success.
And when he is ready to surrender and plod back to the dungeons, his wand pierces through a crumbling plank and hits something with a thud.
Ripping chunks of decaying wood from the wall by the handful, Ominis digs until his fingers land on the spine of a book. His heart caroming in his chest, he pulls it from its improvised shelf, then sits on the floor, peeling it open onto his lap, his wand roving about the page.
Nothing.
His wand pulses feebly against the virgin surface, revealing no etches in the pulp, no pen grooves.
The book is misplaced. Has it been planted there by the Collector to toy with them?
Dragging a thumb along the leather, Ominis quests his mind in search of an explanation, but his conclusions are scant.
Livia described the drove of fingerprints staining the mirror's surface, and it is obvious other students brushed with the Collector the same way they did, which tells Ominis the sundry might belong to one of them.
But it also begs the question: who else at Hogwarts—or beyond—knows about this entity?
Ominis uproots himself from the dusted floor, then ambles out of the room, making for the dungeons with the strange book in tow.
He will stuff it under his pillow and, when the time is right, will interrogate the Mimic at length about it.
But for now, he walks back to the dungeons, his thoughts astir, scrolling by clumps of students and meandering ghosts and flocks of birds as they settle in the eaves for the night.
Outside, the storm is hollering, lapping at the sashed windows, and when Ominis makes it back to the shelter of his dorm, he settles before his desk, then scrounges through his drawer for a curl of virgin paper he endeavors to smooth before filling with letters.
Dear Mr. Dovetail,
My name is Ominis Gaunt. I am an eighth-year student at Hogwarts.
My friends and I gained access to the Room of Requirement through the method you described in your book. Within, we have encountered a sinister entity that branded itself as the Collector.
The presence asked to feed on our emotions in exchange for granting us an object we covet. Once, it has fed on our bliss, leaving us relatively unscathed, but despite the outcome of this first trial, I doubt the entity's motives are benevolent. My friends consider partaking in the leechings, but I know dabbling with this Collector is perilous.
I do not know what I expect from you, Mr. Dovetail, but if you have any information on this Collector, I would be indebted to you if you could share them with me.
With my sincerest regards,
Ominis Gaunt.
* * *
The storm has long thinned into a mizzle when Sebastian makes it back to their dorm. He brings with him the smell of sodden wool, the funk of soot, and a scud of bitterness that fogs over the room.
"How was your jaunt?" Ominis asks him, aware of Sebastian's festering mood.
A cloak puddles onto the floor; a sigh strangle out of a cinched throat. "You invited Livia to the ball."
Not a question. A statement. The kind meant to bludgeon.
"She said yes," is all Ominis offers as an explanation. "If she was yours, she wouldn't have accepted."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means she can make her own decisions," Ominis points out, his mood putrefying likewise. "She doesn't belong to me—or to you, for that matter—if she asks me to release her from her promise, I will, but if she won't, I'll go to the ball with her."
"I knew something happened during the leeching," Sebastian says, releasing, at last, the chimeras he gave shape to in his mind from their bony prison. "She was part of your bliss, wasn't she? Why?"
How Ominis aches to tell Sebastian what it was like to hold her in his arms, or share a slice of peace with her under the celestial canopy of the forsaken garden, or feel the silk of her skin against his palm, but instead he shakes his head, a gossamer line running across his forehead. "Why was she part of yours, Sebastian?"
"Don't deflect the question back to me. You always wiggle out of confrontation because you can't stand the fucking heat."
"What is this truly about, then?" Ominis snarls, the delivery resolutely sharp. "Let me paint the picture for you, Sebastian." He tilts his head, contempt bleeding through his features. "You're scared I have a chance with her, so you show some teeth the minute you feel her slipping away from your grasp. Am I getting hot?" He doesn't wait for an answer before notching another arrow and letting it loose. "You saw us at the lake when she peeled the shirt off my back. You heard her joke around with me in the Undercroft. You're angry I got closer to her than you ever did and now you pathetically ask me to back down. Well I won't."
Sebastian gives an arrogant scoff. "You're wrong on that account, Ominis. I kissed her today, and she reciprocated in full."
The blow lands.
It isn't the hurt that knifes right through Ominis' heart, it's watching the handful of elated memories rot and fall away from his clutch.
Was their time at the lake a lie?
Livia's touch on his skin felt real enough.
Was their moment in the derelict garden a ploy?
Her smile did blossom under this touch.
Was her answer to his request just another falsehood?
Her consent was eager enough.
His jaw tightening, Ominis shakes his head. "You're petty, Sebastian. Imelda was right about that."
"Then join the fucking club," Sebastian bites out, before setting to rummaging through his sundries.
There is the sound of mistreated leather as Sebastian yawns his trunk open, then the hiss of clothes being wrested from a dresser. Books are piled. Drawers are plundered. Hangers are stripped.
He is packing.
"Where are you going?" Ominis asks.
"Why does it fucking matter?" Sebastian shoots back.
Ominis knows he should be pleading with his friend.
But he is spent; smoked to cinders.
For once, he doesn't want to bend to the Slytherin's juvenile impulses.
For once, he'll let him go.
Sebastian lugs his trunk to the door, then yanks it open.
Before he can exit, Ominis angles his face to him, his anger still smoldering behind his cheeks. "I won't be participating in the Collector's other leechings."
He has toyed with the notion for many nights now, laying awake in his bed, tearing scenarios asunder.
If he is ensnarled in the Collector's schemes, he won't be able to pull his friends from its skein.
No.
He will hunt for answers in Hogwarts' murkiest corners.
Sebastian stops under the threshold. The words he serves Ominis are sharp with disdain. "Not even to protect your new flame?"
"I can protect her through other means," Ominis retorts. "Sometimes it's not about indulging someone, Sebastian. Sometimes it's about making the right decision for them."
"How chivalrous of you," Sebastian derides. "But I think you misunderstand her, Ominis."
"Enlighten me."
"She isn't the fragile little thing you think her to be."
Ominis wants to tell him Livia isn't the one he thinks fragile, but something keeps him from adding another score of blemishes on their bruised friendship.
Yet, the next words that leave him—even though intended to make Sebastian snap out of his delusion—only draw more strychnine from the injured Slytherin. "You're on your own, Sebastian."
"I've been from the start, Ominis," Sebastian spits back. "Your friendship was always conditional."
"And yours dependent on assent."
The trunk hisses out of the room and the knob squeaks softly in its socket. Sebastian lingers for another moment, then parts with two words that feel like a severance. "Goodbye, Ominis."
A period, not a comma.
A cut, not a bruise.
"Goodbye, Sebastian."
A candle snuffed out in their darkest hour.
Author's notes
I'm going out of town for 3 days on a little escapade with my mom, which means I'll be either drunk in a ditch or capering along, so I will most likely not have time to write. I'm coming back on Thursday, however, and I intend on making it up to you by posting our next leeching. 👀
If you haven't joined already, we have a charming little discord server that is growing like weeds. Don't hesitate to join on the fun. By the way, we have a roleplaying section that allows you to roleplay with Sebastian and Ominis in a scenario strangely reminiscent of this little fanfiction, so if you're interested it's happening over here: https://discord.gg/FCt7dp77

The reason I am so reluctant about the idea that Du’met is possessed by Holmes/his incarnation , is that H.H. Holmeas wasn’t a serial killer.
Holmes confessed the killing of 27 people. He was only convicted for one murder. But it was believed that he killed nine up to twelve people. Why? Well, Holmes was an unreliable narrator. He wanted to boast about what he did, he always lied to people and exaggereated stories to make himself look better and or/feel in control. And then he had control about how people would remember him and interpret his actions.
Additionally the police pinned other murders on him, because he was there and it was convenient to blame him, instead of finding the real murderer.
Holmes doesn’t even fit the definition of a serial killer. His murders always had a motive; not just killing someone for the fun of it or to satisfy an urge. He either wanted money, cover up a pregnancy/abortion gone wrong, get land, etc.. It was to cover up his scams.
It is true that Holmes’ Hotel (mostly the third floor) had hidden rooms and passages. However, this was because he didn’t want to pay for the construction material (or the workers). The third floor, which he built for the World’s Fair 1893, was uninhabitable. Holmes even set the hotel on fire, to get insurance money, not to cover up his murders.
What Holmnes really was, was a liar, a fraud, a murderer. But not to the extent depicted in the game.
I know it’s a game and all. And I also love to read about all the different theories. And people can headcanon whatever they want.
