Amtrak's Pennsylvanian Crosses the Conestoga
Not far from our Lancaster apartment, Amtrak’s former Pennsylvania Railroad Main Line to Harrisburg crosses the Conestoga River on an impressive multiple-span stone arch bridge. Fellow author and photographer, Dan Cupper had shown me how to reach this bridge before Kris and I relocated. Since our move last Spring I’ve paid several visits to the western bank of the river, but I hadn’t caught…

Carriages, wagons, and sleighs from the remaining two carriage barns, Shelburne Museum, Vermont, USA. Featured are a Conestoga frontier wagon, several stagecoaches from New York and New England, and a school bus sleigh from 1910 used in rural Vermont.
Although it looks brown in the photo, the school bus sleigh is much redder in real life.
Collection of sleighs and carriages in the Round Barn can be seen here.

US postage stamp, 1988 “3¢ Conestoga Wagon” Scott #2252
Issued: February 29, 1988 - Conestoga, Pennsylvania Quantity: 129,828,000 Designer: Richard Schlect Printed By: Bureau of Engraving and Printing (engraved)
The Conestoga wagon was created by German settlers in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the early 1700s. It was named after the Conestoga River and Conestoga Township. These covered wagons could carry up to six tons and were pulled by horses, mules, or oxen. The Conestoga wagon was designed so that the items inside wouldn’t move around and also to help it cross rivers and streams. The most common use was to transport produce to fairs and farmer’s markets. Its rounded, boat-like-shaped bed, high side walls, and wide-rimmed, oversized wheels later made it ideal for traveling through the Appalachian Mountains. Contrary to popular belief, these wagons were never used by settlers traveling from Oregon to California.

I decided to pastiche together what I've gathered of the Conestoga horse, a draft horse bred in Pennsylvania in the 18th century.
We have photos of the breed from back in the 1860s, where they were still famous for pulling Conestogas. And they just look like a damn fine draft horse - like a Belgian, but leggy. However, descriptions from the 18th century seem to suggest more like a boxy Friesian. Since this horse didn't have great stud records, its hard to piece together the older look - so perhaps the breed changed due to different trends! so I decided to recon this boi more along the lines of boxy Friesian/give it a baroque horse look.

Yes, the horses/oxen that pull the cart are part of the Bot/Con. Just to make them weirder.
