In the small dark back room of the Oxford Art Factory we sat in small leather booths sipping brightly coloured cocktails listening to the initially Chvrches-esque sounds of Yorke. The small crowd nodding along appreciatively as the sound develops along a spectrum of dark synth to upbeat pop – with a Lana del Rey cover thrown in for measure – a style Yorke’s voice suits perfectly. Supported by one stop shop musician seen gliding from guitar to keyboard, looping and layering the electronic beats the whole effect is quite stirring and hauntingly beautiful. Yorke has her own headline shows starting this year – don’t miss out!

The room was finally at full to capacity when Jack Gray took to the stage. Introducing the Sydney crowd to his debut EP ‘Nights like this’ it turns out this was his first headline show! Straight into a well polished upbeat number from the 21 year old Mackay native you can’t help but feel happy for the guy who has a heap of friends cheering and singing away in the front row.

He stopped to tell us about how music runs in the family and he roadied for his drummer dad since he was knee high. He also shared some heavy personal stories, comfortable sharing evocative details – literally the crowd went progressively silent listening to the story behind the song ‘Bullet’.

Gray sounds polished, professional and well produced – but don’t be fooled – this is all his own work. This singer songwriter is the real deal and as effortless as he sounds on stage is testament to all the hard work hard it has taken to achieve this and the results are paying off.

So if you’re looking for a coming of age, fun, engaging Aussie sound this might be the guy you’ve been looking for.

This was my first concert and I was hoping to try out concert photography (I always thought those photos were the coolest) unfortunately I had to take the pictures from a balcony and so it was a little more difficult to get good pictures up there. But I think this one turned out alright
