i’m writin’ for charity (and political mobilization)

So! Since my laptop is busted and I can’t draw, and @spitandvinegar had the fantastic idea of writing stuff in exchange for donations to Swing Left, I am jumping on this bandwagon. I’m opening up 4 slots for ficlets at 3 cents per word - so for $30 donated that’s 1k words, $15 that’s 500 words, so on so forth. 

- 1 of these slots is gonna be for Selkie Bucky fic content. How that works: everybody who donates and wants Fat Seal Bucky, then whatever amount you donated, the corresponding word count will be added to the story. Feel free to add specific requests and I will do my best to incorporate them - possibly this may turn into a series of vignettes if I can’t finagle a way to stick all the requests into one fic. 

- Other 3 slots are for other content. 

- What I’ll Write: my strengths are comedy fic and shenanigans. I’ll write outtakes or vignettes or codas of any of my published fics (tho keep in mind ITHLYN is not finished and I might not be able to write your request due to story plan!). I pretty much write only in Captain America movie universe, though I can also write Discworld fic. I’ll write AUs - Shrunkyclunks, modern AU, one or more chars are mythological creatures, etc. I can do you a great Steve, Bucky, Sam and Natasha, with whatever pairings thereof, up to and including Barbershop Quartet. NatSharon, SteveSamBucky and however u wanna stick Clint in there will come out good too. Tony, Pepper, Maria, Fury, Peggy and the Howlies I can do you a great genfic, though I’m on more uncertain footing on pairings in that set. I don’t know shit about comics canon or Agent Carter or any other Marvel shows, so unfortunately I can’t really write anything there. 

What I Won’t Write: no noncon, no children at all (yes even in genfic, I straight up do not write children). No high school AUs. No angst - guys, I’m just shit at it. No torture or HTP stuff. No Stony this time - I don’t think I’d be able to write it properly. Please message me beforehand for NSFW and/or kink stuff! I might not be able to write what you want to read. 

Disclaimer: I write pretty much comedy only, and it creeps into basically everything I do. If you ask for 800 words of NatSharon pussy eating, what you’ll probably get is 100 words of pussy eating and 700 words of Natasha kicking her heels off in passionate undress and accidentally kicking a shoe through Sharon’s bedroom window. If you want ABO, you’ll get some incredibly weird biology and worldbuilding and most likely zero self-lubing buttholes. Please keep this in mind when requesting! I’ll take you on a fun ride, but it probably won’t be what you were expecting. 

- This is gonna be first come first served (except for Selkie Bucky). Since this is not an auction situation, there’s no outbidding, but the first 3 people to show me proof will get the slots. However: for Selkie Bucky fic it’ll just add to the wordcount (see above).

Hello friends and fellow TRC/TDT fans, this is the time of year I pretend I have any kind of salesmanship and boost the Fandom Trumps Hate fanworks auction. (I used to have to sell Girl Scout cookies every winter; this is preferable.)

If you make Raven Cycle/Dreamer Trilogy/Ronan Trilogy fanworks, or if you want to offer your services as a beta reader, alpha reader, sensitivity reader, etc. to help creators make more Raven Cycle works, I would like to point your attention toward this event. Sign ups to offer your services open January 31st, and you can follow them at @fandomtrumpshate​ or check out their carrd. (Seriously, check it out, every year I want to bid on TRC shit and there’s like, sooo few TRC auctions.)

FTH is a well-established multi-fandom charity auction that’s raised over $135k in donations to progressive causes in its years of operation. If you aren’t familiar with fan auctions, they’re events where fan creators and supporters offer their services in exchange for donations to charitable causes.

In the years that I’ve taken part in FTH as a contributor and as a bidder, I’ve raised money for or donated money to The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, Life After Hate, ConPRMetidos, The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, The Trevor Project, RAINN, and Trans Lifeline. (Note: in recent years, FTH has shifted focus toward smaller organizations where small donations can be more felt, a move that I approve of.)

I’ve written some of my favorite fics as a result of this auction and the collaboration with people who cared about causes I cared about and then let me engage in back and forth with them about what they like SPECIFICALLY and how I could deliver that. It’s like a fic exchange except BETTER because you get to ask and know EXACTLY what your recipient wants, and ALSO you both get to know you’ve done some good for the world! It’s a chance to do good while doing something you like doing anyway, so please take a look at it and see if this is something you have the bandwidth for this year. Cheers.

FTH 2020 Totals

This is an exciting post to make! 2020 is a scary year, in many ways. But the auction has been a way for us to channel our fear and anxiety into creativity, community-building, and much-needed financial support for some really amazing organizations. (Two of them even reached out directly to thank everyone involved!)

We had more creators than ever before – 573! – step up to offer just under 750 fanworks in 298 fandoms. We had sixty fan laborers sign onto a brand-new project, joining the Regiment of Fan Laborers to support FTH authors – and 34 people donated to thank the ROFL for their work. We ran a crafts bazaar for the first time, helping nearly a dozen fan crafters connect with people who wanted to support the auction’s causes. 

And guys, we broke a lot of records.

This was FTH’s biggest single year yet.

That sparkly number also doesn’t include the extra pennies and dollars that so many of you donated to cover processing fees. We decided not to record those, but we appreciate them, and we know the recipient organizations do too.

That money you all raised is already being put to work by small organizations that are doing extraordinary work: providing life-saving food and water to refugees crossing the desert, creating safer environments for LGBTQ kids in K-12 schools, fighting for the rights of trans people, helping to elect Black women, working with communities to reverse pollution and protect wild spaces, educating the public about genocide in all its forms, creating a path out of hatred for members of white supremacist groups, advocating in court for immigrant children, helping disadvantaged voters make their voices heard, and so much more.

Here is the full breakdown by organization:

Transformative fan creators and the fellow fans who love their creations have come together from hundreds of different fandoms to raise over $100,000 for these organizations!

No matter what happens in November, we’ll be back next year.

No matter who our president will be for the next four years, we in the US will have an uphill battle to protect the most vulnerable among us and make our society more just. We hope you’ll come back too.

Here’s what you can do in the meantime:

1) Follow fth2020fanworks, where we will reblog the works created for this year’s auction. Creators, don’t forget to email links for us to reblog! Over on Dreamwidth, join the FTH Fanworks community - if you’re a creator, you can post your works there, or you can just join it to see all the great fanworks pop up on your reading page!

2) Keep up with the groups you have contributed to. Every single group on this list is doing extraordinary work, and every single one of them is doing it on a very small budget. We’ve already made their financial situation a bit more comfortable with the auction. (Again: if you didn’t see their notes of appreciation, you should go look!) But these groups will certainly be grateful for more financial support in three months, or six… and they also need your support in non-financial ways.

One great thing you can do for each of these groups, whether or not you donated to them during the auction, is to sign up for updates to stay current with their work. Simply being aware of the problems they are fighting, and the work they are doing to counteract them, is also valuable.

3) Run your own fandom-specific auction! Big pan-fandom auctions are.. well, they’re big and pan-fandom. Our reach is broad, but in some ways, it’s also shallow, and there’s a lot of management that goes into juggling all the different fandoms involved. But fandom-specific auctions are easier to run, and easier to publicize, and they bring out people who might not show up for a big pan-fandom thing. 

And, although FTH opted not to support specific candidates for office, there’s no reason another auction couldn’t! If you want to support progressive candidates for office – especially downballot candidates who are likely struggling for funding or attention – we would be thrilled to support you.

We have a playbook and organizational materials we’d love to share with you. We have templates, spreadsheets, even scripts to automate the process so that you don’t have to make all those forms and posts by hand! Tis the season of giving! Another year is coming to a end, and in times like these it can sometimes be hard to see any good in the world. Every day seems to bring a new disaster or tragedy, but that does not have to be your story. Donate to a charity today to give back this Christmas, and receive a special gift from me all of your very own!

How to Help Puerto Rico from the outside

Hi, everyone.

Like a lot of Puerto Ricans, I’m currently part of the diáspora; part of millions of Puerto Rican living outside the island due to different reasons that drove us to leave our Island (temporary or permanent)

As of tonight (9/19/17), Hurricane Maria will be moving across Puerto Rico as a category 5 hurricane.  The destruction it will leave on its wake is unknown. It’s sad and frustrating not knowing how to help my people, my island, my country, during these hard times.  

So, I’m gathering all the places we can donate money. Real organizations from Puerto Rico, to ensure that the money goes directly where it’s needed.  I’ll be updating this list as soon as I can verify (to the best of my knowledge) the organizations where the donations are going.

If you wish to share one, feel free to submit the information (click here) to out page and we’ll verify (as best as we can).  Whatever you can donate, even if it’s just $1, it would be greatly appreciate.

Here is the list so far:

1.  Maria & Irma: Puerto Rico Real-time Recovery Fund:  managed by the non-profit ConPRmetidos.  All donations to this fund will exclusively support the victims of the catastrophic Hurricane María and Irma in Puerto Rico and provide relief and aid the communities affected by this disaster.

2.  HURRICANE IRMA RELIEF FUND FOR PUERTO RICO, CUBA, AND FLORIDA:  The funds will go directly to nonprofits working on the ground, such as Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico.

3. Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund - Puerto Ricans in Action: All funds will be withdrawn from the campaign on September 29, 2017, by our co-founder, Jorge Rivera, and donated to two nonprofits located in Puerto Rico working to rebuilding communities in Culebra and Loiza: ConPRmetidos is working to construction of long-enduring homes in Culebra that meet Safe Building Codes standards, and  Iniciativa Comunitaria is working with community leaders in Loiza to identify immediate and long-term needs. They are also working with the United Way of Puerto Rico to give the in-kind donations we receive to the best community organization.

Other organizations that would greatly benefit from additional help:

1.  San Francisco de Asis' Animal Sanctuary, Inc: animal shelter in the southwest, currently a “budget covers our expenses for the next month. We have more than 300 dogs and cats under our care.” (GoFundMe)

These organizations are helping from afar as well. Check their websites for more information.

1. Puerto Ricans in Action: from Los Angeles, CA. Coalition of  businesses and organizations in the greater Los Angeles Puerto Rican community coming together to offer support to family and friends.

Fandom Loves Puerto Rico - LIVE AUCTION

Alright friends, we are go!

Please step right on over to the Fandom Loves Puerto Rico auction, a charity auction directly raising money to ConPRmetidos, a Puerto Rican non-profit in partnership with Foundation for Puerto Rico, a 501(c)(3) corporation, which is acting as the fiscal sponsor. All donations are 100% tax-deductible, and 100% of donations to this fund will go exclusively to long-term relief for the victims of catastrophic Hurricane María in Puerto Rico. 

We have over 350 amazing and generous human beings who have signed up to auction off fan fiction, fan art, physical crafts, writing services, fanvids, mixes, podfic, and other awesome gifts to benefit Puerto Rico’s recovery. You can see a list of fandom creators here, as well as professional comics creators who generously donated their work.  

The auction will be live from 9am EST, Tuesday 10/17, and bidding will be open on all items until 6pm EST, 10/23. At that time, the auction posts will be screened to private to bring bidding to a close. Afterwards, the winning bidders will start to receive a reply to their posts informing them that their bid has won, and further instructions. There are a few reasons physical crafts aren't a good fit for the main auction, but we know that many people would love to use their craftiness to support our organizations. So this year we've formalized our usual policy of signal-boosting crafters into the Fan Crafts Bazaar!

How it works:

Fan crafters set up their own "stalls" on the site of their choice. They can have set prices or use an auction format, and their crafts can be either ready-made or made-to-order. Our main requirement is that they handle money the same way we do for the FTH auction - you send your donation to the organization in question, and then send them proof of donation (usually a screenshot of a receipt), and they send you your item. We will add information about all the stalls to this post, where you can browse all the offerings! Beyond that, the FTH mods will not be involved in these transactions. Please do not contact us about your fan craft items.

Ideas for fandom TH

I have been seeing lots of posts, especially among Sherlock fans saying that they don’t know what to ask for in the fandom trumps hate charity auction ( https://fandomtrumpshate.tumblr.com), and so I want to give you some ideas so that you can commission those works!

I will be giving my!opinions as well, so if you can’t think of what you like, you can commission what I like, so it is win, win, win!!

Underserved Ships

 I liked Mormormor the ship between Mary Morstan, Moriarty, and Moran. Her description was “Probably doing awful things, but mostly to other people, so that’s alright then.”

Fill in the fandom blanks

Destination toast has done studies of fandom and identified many trends in fandom, especially the Sherlock fandom, although she also has stats on others like check please! Look at her stats on AO3 or her tumbler website for ideas.

How about a modern adaptation in the Sherlock TV universe of the Yellow Face? What about doing the Sussux Vampire as a crossover with Buffy? And why can’t we have more people of color and women centered stories? Don’t you think that DI Hopkins, Sally Donovan, and Molly Hooper would make a kick-@ss crime fighting team?

I have my own wishlist, but since no one offered a 100,000 word Podfic in the auction, I can’t figure out how to get a Podfic of Jupiter_ash’s story A study in winning (http://archiveofourown.org/works/366788) If you need more ideas, feel free to forward me an ask. I will be online crying because I won’t be paid until February.

And if you can’t decide which charity, might I suggest ConPRmetidos to help Puerto Rico get their power grid back up?
