hi! jewel wasp what? that's interesting... god bless the wasp but they do terrify me so maybe fun facts will help me appreciate them more <3
Oh boy oh boy i cant wait to tell you about the jewel wasp <3
Obvious warning for insects/wasps under the cut, as well as mentions of parasitism since that’s technically what jewel wasps are (they only prey on other insects though)
Okay so! First, I would love to show you my lovely friend the Jewel Wasp, aka Emerald Wasp, aaka Ampulex Compressa
Gorgeous, right? Look at those colors!
Now! The reason these beautiful little creatures are considered parasites is because they lay their eggs inside of living cockroaches - what would be an undeniably terrible time for the cockroach, if it was aware of what was happening, although evidence points to otherwise. What evidence, you may ask?
Well, the jewel wasp’s stinger isn’t just there to look pretty; it’s actually chockfull of tiny little sensors that make it the worlds most precise brain surgery tool. Before laying her eggs inside her victim, she wrestles the head of the cockroach and inserts her stinger into the base of the head, targeting the two spots that control locomotion and injects a gamma-aminobutyric acid.
Look at her go! So powerful!
This acid is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and renders the cockroach hypokinetic (meaning below normal movement), putting the cockroach into an almost dream-like state. She is able to control her victim by grabbing the base of the antennae and steering them; a much more effective way to get her living baby stroller into a safe place than having to drag a bug much larger than her.
The jewel wasp will steer her victim into some sort of small enclosure, inject her eggs into their stomach, and then close whatever openings exist to essentially entomb the victim (and her eggs) safely inside.
This is where the second part of the acid comes in; by slowing down the cockroaches metabolism, she can ensure that the cockroach lives as long as possible to give her eggs the best chance of surviving - since they will, as I’m sure you’ve guessed, begin to eat the cockroach from the inside out once they’ve hatched. As long as they eat carefully, the cockroach can stay alive until they’ve squeezed every bit of nutrients and blood out of their host, and in this cruel, cruel world every drop makes a difference in survival.
On top of the dream-like state, the cockroach’s brain is flooded with dopamine, which both keeps the cockroach in a placid state as well as promotes excessive grooming (a smart move by a parasite, since this will help to stave off additional competition). The cockroaches have been shown to be capable of “waking up” in states of high stress, such as escaping water to avoid drowning (whichever scientist thought to toss them in water almost certainly has some underlying issues, but at least they advanced science!), but from both the acid and the brain damage, they seem to be incapable of moving of their own free will in any other state. Posture and brain function (yes, someone hooked their tiny brains up to EMGs) suggest the roach really is in a dream state, unaware of it’s situation
Honestly, that last bit is what makes the jewel wasp so fascinating to me; plenty of parasites can lay their offspring inside their host, but to be able to zombify their victims? Incredible!! Nature is so fascinating <3
#nyway if you read all of this rambling im kissing you on the mouth so so sweetly#anon ask#wasp#insect#jewel wasp#ampulex compressa#long post#parasite#camtankerous says things#hopefully thats all the blocking tags ppl will need but if i missed one lmk!#ohhh hhoooo hooo i love talk about. bugs <3

The eleotrid clade of gobies are popular aquarium fishes down under, where a number of species inhabit the freshwaters. As a clade of fishes, the eleotrids are underappreciated by aquarists outside of Australasia. One of the three relatively popular species in the aquarium trade, is the visually striking Hypseleotris compressa, the empire or carp gudgeon, also known as the empire fish.
The range of the H. compressa extends from the northern half of mainland Australia in the south, and up into parts of nearby New Guinea. This stunning goby inhabits slow-flowing and still freshwaters, extending only into the low salinity reaches of estuaries, meaning that this is a freshwater fish. There it lives among aquatic plants and woody, submerged debris, and forages for mostly tiny prey amongst detritus, leaf litter, and vegetation.
According to sources, H. compressa measures up to 12 centimeters or almost 5 inches in length. Although I have never seen one exceeding 3 inches, and a more typical size would be 5 centimeters, or 2 inches. Male H. compressa establish territories in which the females spawn, and the males both guard and tend to their nests until hatching occurs. Spawning occurs during the warmer months. The spawn and hatchlings are tiny, and as far as I know, they have never been reared in the aquarium.
In Australian English, the eleotrid or sleeper gobies are colloquially known as the 'gudgeons', although this word, ironically, first referred to a demersal, northern hemisphere carp of the genus Gobio, that was as familiar to the first white Australian settlers, as are the eleotrids to their naturalized descendants. Within the tree of life, gobies are only very distantly related to the carps, and the eleotrid gobies are very successful in the Antipodean freshwaters.
The type locality for H. compressa is the Clarence River of subtropical New South Wales. There the pH is about 6.7 to 7.7, depending on the time of the year, and the average pH is close to 7. More generally, the rivers and creeks in the surrounding Clarence-Moreton bioregion, have yearly average pH values, from 6.6 to 7.8. as regards their water temperature, they are usually 15 to 30 degrees centigrade.
The iconic and multi-volume Baensch freshwater atlas, claims that this species tolerates temperatures of 10 to 30 degrees. This is not very inaccurate but exposure to ambient temperatures as low as 10 degrees, is both seasonal and temporary. Some sources claim this fish tolerates temperatures as high as 35 degrees centigrade, but temperatures in the creeks where H. compressa lives, are not normally this warm, and it should not be attempted in the aquarium.
H. compressa and similar gobies are carnivores. This species consumes insects and other tiny arthropods, primarily cladocerans and copepods, and is regarded as zooplanktivorous. This fish willingly consumes defrosted foods of an appropriate nature. Sources claim this species eats algae, but this seems unlikely to be deliberate given the general diets of Hypseleotris sp. gobies. They do ingest detritus whilst they are feeding, so the merely incidental ingestion of algae is likely in H. compressa and it's kin.
As a predator, H. compressus is not a danger to adult community fishes, although it is known to eat fish fry, including acts of cannibalism. It is a peaceful aquarium denizen, but such 'gudgeons' do prefer a quiet tank without boisterous, demersal tankmates, such as very active catfishes or loaches. The male fish should not be cohabited together.

wasps can rock a range of different colours, including my personal favourite, GREEN!
(photo from here)
this is Ampulex compressa, also known as the 'Emerald cockroach wasp' or 'Emerald jewel wasp'.
it kidnaps a roach for its babies to feed on! what good mothers they are!
Fuck it, I'm gonna say it: Wasps are so fucking cool. They are awesome and beautiful and important and they deserve more hype.
This post is NOT for wasp haters and cowards! "Bohoo a wasp once stung me :( a wasp flew around me while I sat in a cafe :( I stepped on a wasp once :(((( " I DON'T CARE!!!!! I drank a headless wasp on accident once and I got over it, stop whining.
Anytime I say I like wasps someone goes "nooooooo they are evil evil bastards!" I DIDNT ASK. You are affronted that nature persists in a way thats inconvenient to you and take the easy hanging fruit of dunking on wasps.
Only love for wasps on this post! Pls tell me your favourite wasp funfacts! I'll start!!!!
Wasps get pretty used to the presence of onlookers! They just keep carrying out their VERY (!) important tasks uwu I once spent like 20 minutes looking at wasps fortifying their little rooms in a wall against the oncoming winter! They were very smart and pretty and very sweet about me standing there <3

Creature Awaits #199
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Hope you all had a wonderful St. Patrick's Day! 💚
(Beautiful photograph taken by Cory Campora (CC BY-SA 2.0))
The Emerald Cockroach Wasp
A.K.A: The Jewel Wasp
Scientific Name: Ampulex compressa
Region: Africa, South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands
Size: Females are about 7/8" (~22mm) long, males are slightly smaller
Interesting Notes: This fascinating wasp is able to unwittingly lead its much larger cockroach prey peacefully into its nest by carefully injecting a specialized venom that temporarily disables its escape reflex. She then attaches her egg to the cockroach's side and buries them both before the venom's effect wears off, so the trapped cockroach will still be there when the egg hatches to provide a hearty first meal.
You can watch this amazing process on Team Candiru's Youtube page here:

Weird Wasp....Tuesday?
I was getting kind of down in the dumps about not having any ideas for comics for a while, but I just had to find an excuse to draw an Evaniid today. The other two came into the picture afterward. Sometimes, it can be quite a challenge to come up with an idea or scenario that incorporates some kind of joke or pun related to certain insects, especially wasps.
I'm glad this one worked out. I suppose it would have made more sense to draw an ootheca in the picture, although I am curious about wether the ootheca "appears" externally after mating? I've seen photos of female Periplaneta americana without oothecae, either that, or I'm blind, lol. I welcome any advice or corrections!
The original accompanied caption:
When cockroaches are on the menu... Ampulex compressa and Evania appendigaster are both cockroach parasitoids. A. compressa is known for "zombifying" cockroaches, by stinging them in the brain and then dragging them into the wasp's burrow by the antennae. An egg is then laid on the host. E. appendigaster, aka Ensign wasps, parasitizes roach oothecae by laying eggs into the cockroach egg cases. They also distinctively have vivid blue eyes.
This will be an interesting match! Who will win!? 🤔 😆
(Also, if rock-paper-scissors doesn't require hyphens, I can easily remove them).
