Independent living and a washing machine engineer!
I popped in to visit my Mum on Friday. She lives in 'independent Living' accomadation, it's much like a residential care home although it has everything on site, it is no institution and residents have rights, choices and more freedom. She has a well equipped little flat and qualified, very experienced staff are on duty 24 hours a day. Unfortunately when my husband was on tour in 2010 things took a severe downward spiral in my Mums health during the second half of deployment. (She has had ongoing problems since I was a child). I have always done everything in my power in the past to keep relationships going with her but it has been an up and down spiral for many many years, her illness has caused many strains within our small family unit but since she has been in care; things have become less stressful for all of us, she is happier, supported and well looked after. Complex needs, need complex care packages - this is not something I could provide whilst having a small family on my own - there is always guilt that I can't have her living with me but, it is just not as easy as it may seem. Anyway, I went into the home - it's always lovely and clean with staff around, she is sat with two men in the communal dining room having her fish & chips. Both men know my face now and offer me a seat (often on one of their laps lol) I settled for a chip! Mum proceeds to inform me I am nominated to see the washing machine engineer? She gets on her feet saying its a useless machine and doesn't work etc etc I settle her back to her seat calmly saying 'Ok Ok Mum, I will see him' I didn't even know she had a new one but at the same moment, in comes the engineer. Mum throws her keys at me in anger 'I will ram the thing down his neck'? Ok I'm on to this, I tell Mum to stay where she is, thank the two gentlemen for their hospitality and I go with the engineer. Awkward silence in the lift (he did hear her) I discuss the weather - as you do? The engineer asks me what is wrong with the machine, I tell the poor man, I have no idea?! I am just in the wrong place at the wrong time! He proceeds to get the laptop out and plug it into the machine, Mum comes bursting in, 'you can take this damn thing with you, it creases the clothes, it's too hot and it dries for 3 hours, my clothes are ruined' he looks at me, eek! I look at Mum? Turns out he is a calm engineer, thankfully when she stops telling him how useless the machine is he asks if she has changed the temperature? 'No, how do I do that?' He asks if she has changed the drying times? 'No, how do I do that?' Oh dear. She tells him all of the residents have this model and not one of them like it and can use it?! He gently goes on to explain about modern machines and them not really being made for age group as the computer on board is difficult to work out. Well, all credit to him, he changed all the programs for her but her one main gripe was the 'easy iron' cycle really didn't work. He tried many times to explain a 1600 spin will indeed crease clothes, then a 3 hour drying cycle added on will crease everything. She was adamant the easy iron should work regardless and it doesn't - I seriously considered whether she thought there may be a little man in the drum doing the ironing as it switches to dry? I will leave that thought there! After half an hour or so of washer dryer demonstrations I had to go! So did he - we made our excuses and went back in the lift with Mum who was annoyed she had now missed her pudding so was going back to get it. I walked out with the engineer, mumbling my apologies. Forgive me for finding the humour with my Mum. It's the only coping mechanism I have with her. We may be married unaccompanied and many stay off camp to be near family, I do but it's not so that my Mum can help me out, it's because I have always helped her out. I have not yet had a call about the machine? I can only make the presumption that changing the temperature did the trick?! Believe me, I will not ask either as next week will be a whole new drama! 😁

Since he has left hospital my arms are the place he wants to be. Totally understand this as we spend three weeks together. The fact that he is teething doesn't help 😳. #complexneeds
