a lot of people act like xie lian was entirely unaware/ignorant to the power imbalance in his and mu qings relationship when he was probably the most empathetic and understanding towards mu qing. for example, he defends mqs behaviour to fx multiple times because he understands what causes it.

i think he just believed their friendship overcame this power imbalance (which was easier for him to do because he wasnt negatively impacted by it unlike mu qing).

whereas, despite how deeply he cared for xl, mq couldnt overlook it because he was literally xls servant and was faced with this power imbalance everyday.

xl saw mq as his friend first, however mq believed he was viewed primarily as a servant

u cannot convince me that ron weasley isn’t a mother hen. because while hermione is a child prodigy, she’s breaking laws and committing war crimes half the time when it benefits her. and harry ‘i’m the Chosen One’ potter attracts danger like a flame would a moth.

so while they’re a duo of danger, there’s ron.

who grew up with siblings and spent a lot of his childhood making sure ginny didn’t get hurt playing in the mud.

who’s as nervous as Molly when Charlie works with the Dragons, and panics when Bill gets attacked by the werewolf.

who steals specific concoctions from the twins when they try to prank Percy because it could possibly harm him.

who wraps harry’s wounds when he gets hurt and is too tired to see madam pomphrey. who helps hermione understand why killing Rita in the jar wouldn’t help in the long run.

Ron Weasley, the worrier and moral compass of the Golden Trio. he doesn’t believe how many times he saved the wizardry world by simply being himself. and everyone at hogwarts but him can see it.

forever thinking about nami and luffy…. they just. their relationship is so perfectly, consistently, and beautifully written?? (read more bc I care WAY too much about them).

like it would be so easy to slot them into the typical dynamic of her being a buzzkill and him being a reckless dick but that’s not them at all. she’s the first person he meets out on the sea who really, deeply understands what freedom means to him, how vital and important it is - it’s why she’s the one he lets hold and fix his hat, it’s why he waits until she asks him to help with arlong, it’s why he never begrudges her any of her actions in arlong park. he knows her autonomy is just as important to her as his is to him, that she fucking Gets It. she has the same joy and whimsy and protective instinct in her heart, and like recognizes like!!! so luffy lets nami run the day to day of the ship, order him around, hold his greatest treasure in her hands, bc he trusts that when the chips come down she will never abuse that power. she’ll have his back and follow through on whatever insane orders he has his heart set on bc she knows the weight of what she’s been entrusted with.

and like, in return, nami gets exactly as much responsibility as she wants for the first time in her life! she doesn’t have to be alone, doesn’t have to protect everything that matters all on her own - she has luffy and the crew for that now. she gets to be part of a crew, a family, while still remaining in charge of her own life. and in response to all that trust and love, nami is just as protective of luffy and this new home as she ever was of cocoyashi. he gave her back her freedom and put his dream in her hands without a second thought, and she will keep it safe come hell or high fucking water. like I don’t know how to express how emphatically I feel about this but she won’t betray him even to save her own life, even when he would never fucking know!!! nami often ends up being luffy’s primary pillar of emotional support bc she’s just such a consistently steady, faithful presence at his back; even when they disagree on important shit her trust in his judgement and ability to get them through the storm is unshakeable, and vice versa.

idk man I just really do not know how to express how much it matters to me that nami is canonically a ruthless, conniving, deathly stubborn, control freak bitch and that’s like. lowkey WHY luffy+the crew love her so much. idk how to explain how batshit insane the symbolism of her being his navigator and him being her captain makes me.

I sometimes forget how divergent Chad is from canon. One point is D1. That. Chad was so supportive of Ben's deceleration until brief encounters with the vks. Imagine the royal trio sitting up all night discussing it as a 'when we rule' daydreams. Maybe he wasn't sold at first but his mother raise him better - he believed in the vision. He was also completely infatuated with Evie in that first Chemistry lesson pre-knowing she was smart. Laughed at the 'not very heavy' joke. The whole Tourney game through him but he's got to back his life girl Auds, knee jerk reaction at parents day. Was he out of line? For sure. His mother gave him an earful for that. Chad not going after Carlos cause he hadn't a bad experience with him always gets me.

Vijay Iyer, Linda May Han Oh, & Tyshawn Sorey Album Review: Compassion

The word "compassion" certainly evokes sympathy for the downtrodden. On the similarly titled second album together from pianist Vijay Iyer, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, songs do pay tribute. Whether remembering victims of public health failures, the lives of human rights activists, or the legend of instrumental geniuses who have left this earthly plane, the trio is appropriately reverent without delving into overt heroification. But what the word "compassion" connotes, or rather implies, is a sense of listening to someone else, to one another. The trio recorded their terrific debut album Uneasy when they first started playing together; though the album was urgent in its themes, it's the comparatively natural Compassion that displays three players truly honed in. On Iyer's 8th release as a band leader for ECM (third with a trio), the group returned to Oktaven Audio in Mount Vernon, New York to work with label founder Manfred Eicher on bringing to tactility Iyer's compositions and interpretations. The result is even more coherent than its predecessor.

Iyer has long had the ability to pull from seemingly disparate influences and inspirations and make something whole by giving it his unmistakable stamp. In the case of Compassion, the steady presence of Oh and Sorey allow him to literally cull from different projects to introduce pseudo suites of material that nonetheless form a collective. For instance, "Maelstrom", "Tempest", and "Panegyric" come from Tempest, a project dedicated to those who died of COVID. Though each song came from the same place, they conjure unique moods. The first builds around Iyer's push-pull, sudden spritely and chaotic piano arpeggios, as well as Sorey's skittering backbeat. The second and third are somewhat funky and sneaky, though they're connected by Oh's jaw-dropping low register bass solos. Stunningly, each has their effective album spiritual sibling elsewhere. "Malestrom" sports a forward sway like "Arch", a song for Archbishop Desmond Tutu, buoyed by Sorey's drums as Oh and Iyer absorb each other. "Tempest"'s hooks set the stage later in the album for "Ghostrumental", which originated in music for the ensemble project Ghosts Everywhere I Go that premiered at the University of Chicago in 2022 to honor the poet Eve Ewing. On "Ghostrumental", Oh's leads are groovy, Iyer's piano is subtly rhythmic, and Sorey delves into something approaching hip hop. Meanwhile, "Panegryic"'s mournfulness previews "It Goes", also from Ghosts Everywhere I Go. "It Goes" centers around Emmett Till, but it doesn't necessarily mourn him as much as imagine the life he could have led had he not been murdered by racists; I can best describe Iyer's left and right hand playing, respectively, as plaintive and soulful.

The most unexpected songs on Compassion are the covers. A two-and-a-half minute play on Roscoe Mitchell's "Nonaah" threatens at times to become divergent, with its breakneck pace, but is somehow just as tuneful as any other song on the album. And then there's "Overjoyed", Iyer's bopping Steve Wonder interpretation that's also a tribute to the late, great Chick Corea, who performed the song on his final livestream during COVID. Iyer actually developed his version on the same piano Corea used, and his soloing evokes feelings of ecstatic fandom atop Sorey's clattering polyrhythms. This time, the tune does break away from the main theme, only to return to it when you think it's been lost. The moment takes your breath away, though importantly, most of Compassion is unshakeable enough to lull you into its world. It's the type of album you think about just as much, if not more, after it's done as when you were actively listening to it.
