Lost
I feel lost
Like I've wandered off a beaten path
Like a child who let go of their mother's hand
Like a fish out of water
Desperately trying to breath
Like I'm driving without my map
Like GPS without its signal
Like my compass broke in the wilderness
Lost in all this fucked up mess
Someone please tell me,
Which way is north?

i've always thought the Ultra Light camping guys were a little bit silly, especially the ones who make a big deal out of shaving off 9 grams by making something actively worse/less usable, stuff like that.
But I feel like going full boomer when I see some of them recommend not bringing basics like a headlamp or map/compass bc "it's all on my phone anyways" like??? Stop relying on one singular device to provide everything you need, especially one that will leave you completely fucked if you loose it.
#Sunny Life#you can't strap your phone to your head for easy use and a headlamp has a muuuuuch longer battery life than your phone#a map and compass works regardless of where you are and doesn't require a GPS connection or electricity to function#and if you're doing everything on your phone you're gonna drain the battery fast and need to bring a powerbank#that's significantly heavier than either a headlamp or a m+c#do whatever bullshit that you want but recommending this to other potentially new campers is just downright irresponsible#another great niche post from ME#niche on tumblr anyways

These have got to be one of the weirdest foods that are for some reason also for sale everywhere. The only time I've ever eaten these is when I lived in rural setting where one person was responsible for doing all the grocery shopping for 25 people who had to pack shelf stable lunches every day. They seem like something that was invented to help famine victims avoid refeeding syndrome
#You haven't lived until you've had a blueberry belvita with the hard little chips of gummy dried blueberry as your only dessert all day#After you walked through briars to the top of a mountain for an hour and then realized you didn't bring the data sheet#And then got separated from the group without your compass or gps unit or phone or anything and walked around in circles#Like SpongeBob in that episode of spongebob

Wait, there's actually people weighing their gear for backpacking? I always thought it was a joke or something. I used to do a lot more backpacking myself, and the average weight for everyone in my troop was 55 pounds. It's really no issue
I mean... I'm mostly doing it because I have cabin fever and am trying to avoid seasonally appropriate work lol.
But maybe I should clarify why my gear weighs so freaking much.
I don't leave the house without a -10 sleeping bag. I live in the north, there's no guarantee you won't hit freezing in July, and I hate being cold.
Lightweight silnylon just doesn't work around here. Even the day hike trails will snag your gear on black spruce or devil's club and rip holes in it. The few truly lightweight items I have are as much gear tape as original material.
I'm also not going out overnight without my Whisperlight stove, fuel, and Spot beacon. Just no.
Ditto a proper tent. The bugs out here will suck you dry without screens, and the summer storms will find their way under, around, or through any kind of tarp and don't announce themselves more than 10 minutes in advance.
I have a pathological aversion to synthetic hiking clothes. I'll bring some in case I get rained out and need them, but my everyday clothes will mostly be natural fibers tough enough to stand up to the brush that don't feel like crap (do not tell me I'm wrong, I already know every expert says not to do this. Too bad. If I can't hike comfortable, why hike at all?)
My solar panel, backup battery, and book may be labelled luxuries on published packing lists, but they're non-negotiable. Again, what's the point backpacking if I'm bored?
Water bottles. A hydration insert has too much potential to get punctured, and is too limited in what you can use the water for without great difficulty. At least 2 full Contigo bottles go everywhere I go. Plus a filter as backup.
This bag has everything I need except a toothbrush, clothes, and food. It weighs 31 pounds.
Most recommendations for someone my size say don't go over 35 pounds, but this doesn't actually feel too bad. Depending on terrain, weather, and trip length, I could easily add another 10 pounds without worrying. There's still lots of room in the bag if I needed it.
And I don't usually head out for multiple days on my own. If I was hiking with T one of us would take the tent and the other would take the kitchen stuff to break up weight a bit.
So the numbers are a lot better than I'd hoped when I started this morning. Not that it's going to matter for the next 6 months.
#thanks for indulging my shenanigans guys#nothing like a perfectly good Sunday when things could get done to daydream about trips i can't do in this weather#it helps that the day pack i take everywhere with me is already almost 20 pounds#with flares bear spray plb gps compass tarp emergency blankets first aid kit a couple jackets water bottles water filter headlamp#spare batteries a couple knives 300 feet of cord dog stuff and whatever rocks i forgot to take out between hikes#also most of my gear was used or thrifted#thats the case for my big pack some of my pots my solar panels and both jackets#i justified buying the tent and bag as school supplies for my outdoor rec classes#and the stove was non-negotiable#it runs on bike gas and kerosene as well as naphtha and might be the nicest piece of gear i own

Anyone whose been following my ramblings about radicalization might know I've been watching r/Jordanpeterson as it's been declining in real time from the original group of Peterson fans, who were still misinformed fools following the words of a clown but had clear intellectual interests and were trying to understand the world through Petersons writings. Well, now it's hit the end stages and it's almost exclusively bigots and fascists doing their usual dance you'd see anywhere on the internet.
It's actually a very intriguing (but also very boring and depressing) thing to witness as I've seen it happen multiple times, but it was even more obvious in this case then normal. All of a year ago, you'd still see people talking about psychologists, therapy, self improvement, trying to understand issues and LOTS of arguments with the bigots.
Now? It's just the bigots.
I'm not going to spend the time actually disarming this lie (The TLDR is that the numbers are bunk and based on reporting of cops, armed can mean anything from guns to knifes to sticks to rocks to they had all four limbs, why are the pro-carry people willing to draw the line when a black person has a gun, etc etc) but there isn't a SINGLE argument against it in those 63 comments. One person tried to point out that 11 people is still 11 lives being lost, but nobody responded to them.
This has been the standard for months, and I can assure you reflects Petersons own attempts to shake his old base off as they are no longer his core demographic (because he's a far right bigot who "DEFINITELY ISNT A NAZI" pretending to be a centrist) so I suppose he's gotten what he wanted.
Case in point, Doctor Bobolas is one of the most terminally online individuals in this community, posting constantly since the accounts inception. I'm fairly sure he got his account deleted and was previously doing the same before hand as well, as Reddit likes to pretend they are banning bigots while they can just put on a new hat and walk back in, right as rain and clear of their bans.
What can be taken from this and the greater movements of fascists online, in my dumb little bitch opinion, is three things.
1) Those trying to radicalize others have begun to move onto other targets (Ex. Canada at large is beginning such a descent and we shall see if our own cultural norms will reject it)
2) That these people will never go away and will very rarely deradicalize without active interference and the removal of their propaganda sources, but will instead continue to act after the greater movement fails (if it does, which I think it will)
3) Expect further attacks on infrastructure by doomsday members (hey did you know that right wing radicals have been taking down the power grid at increasing levels for years in minority areas) and general violence if they believe to be pushed into a corner.
#Tbh Theres a greater problem at large with grifters trying to use this sense of danger to grift you so just make one yourself#Backpack with a decent survival knife + Gps/compass + map of local area + foraging guide + canteen and some long lasting rations#There's more useful tools you might want but the point isnt to go live in the woods its to be able to haul your ass outta town#Then go somewhere else thats safe like a relative or what have you#Firestarting tools can be useful too but as i said you shouldn't expect the downfall of America you should expect chaos for a few days

Understanding the Science Behind How a Compass Works 🧭✨
The compass is one of the most remarkable and enduring inventions that has helped humankind navigate the world for centuries. 🌍 Whether you're an adventurer, a sailor, a hiker, or just curious about how the world works, understanding how a compass works is essential. In this article, we're going to take a deep dive into the science behind the compass, uncovering how this simple tool continues to be crucial for navigation even in the age of advanced GPS technology. 🌐🔍
So, let’s begin by peeling back the layers and exploring the fundamentals of the compass and how it guides us from one place to another.
What is a Compass and How Does It Work? 🤔
At its core, a compass is a navigation tool that uses a magnetic needle to show direction. The key science behind a compass is its reliance on the Earth’s magnetic field. 🌍🔧
The Earth itself is like a giant magnet 🧲, with a magnetic field stretching from the North Pole to the South Pole. This magnetic field is what makes the compass needle align itself in a particular direction, pointing toward the magnetic poles.
A magnetic needle inside the compass is usually a small magnet, and it is mounted on a pivot so it can rotate freely. When you hold the compass still, the needle aligns itself with the magnetic field of the Earth. 🧭 The north end of the needle will always point toward the magnetic north pole, and the south end will point toward the south pole.
Why Does the Compass Point North? 🧭
This may seem simple, but it's rooted in fascinating physics! The Earth behaves like a giant magnet, with two magnetic poles: one near the North Pole and one near the South Pole. 🌎 The magnetic north pole is actually a magnetic south pole, and the magnetic south pole is near the geographic North Pole. (Crazy, right?)
This means that the north end of the compass needle is actually attracted to the Earth’s magnetic south pole (the one near the geographic North Pole). This is why the compass points north! 📍
The Earth’s Magnetic Field 🧲
Now, to truly understand how the compass works, we need to take a closer look at the Earth’s magnetic field. 🌍🔋
The Earth’s magnetic field is generated by the movement of molten iron and nickel inside the outer core of the Earth. This movement creates electric currents, which in turn generate a magnetic field. The magnetic field extends far into space, protecting the planet from harmful solar radiation. 🌞
This invisible field is what interacts with the magnetic needle inside the compass. The force generated by the Earth’s magnetic field pulls the compass needle into alignment with it, which is why it always points toward the magnetic poles. 🧲
The Physics of Magnetism: What’s Happening Inside the Compass? ⚡
Let’s dive deeper into the physics behind how the compass works. When a magnet is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a force that causes it to align with the field. This is called magnetic torque.
In a compass, the magnetic needle is a small magnet. The Earth’s magnetic field exerts a force on this needle, and the needle aligns itself with the field. The north pole of the needle points to the magnetic north, and the south pole points to the magnetic south. 🧭
This alignment is stable when the needle is allowed to rotate freely. This is why, no matter where you are on Earth, a well-calibrated compass will always point north (or south, depending on how you look at it). The compass is essentially reading the Earth’s magnetic field and telling you which direction you are facing. 🧭
Types of Compasses: Which One is Right for You? 🤷♂️
There are many types of compasses designed for different purposes. The science behind them all remains similar, but their applications differ. Let’s look at a few of the most common types of compasses you might encounter in 2025! 👇
1. Magnetic Compass 🧭
This is the traditional compass that we’ve been talking about so far. It uses a freely rotating magnetic needle to align with the Earth’s magnetic field. The magnetic compass is simple and reliable, but it can be influenced by nearby magnetic fields, such as electronics or metal objects, so be mindful of this when using it. ⚙️
2. Gyrocompass 🌐
While the traditional compass relies on the Earth’s magnetic field, the gyrocompass is a sophisticated navigation tool used in modern ships and aircraft. 🚢✈️ It uses the principles of angular momentum (which is a bit more advanced) to find true north, independent of the Earth’s magnetic field. This is especially useful near the magnetic poles, where a magnetic compass can become unreliable.
3. Digital Compass 📱
With the rise of smartphones, GPS devices, and wearables, digital compasses have become incredibly popular. These compasses use electronic sensors (like magnetometers) to detect the Earth’s magnetic field and convert that information into a digital readout. 🖥️💡
Digital compasses are often integrated into navigation apps on smartphones, providing users with both direction and location information. These devices can also take advantage of other sensors (e.g., accelerometers, GPS) to improve accuracy and reliability.
4. Lensatic Compass 🧐
Often used by military personnel and adventurers, the lunatic compass is built for precise navigation. It has a special sighting mechanism and a lens to help align the compass with distant landmarks, making it ideal for orienteering or map reading.
Compasses in the Modern Age: Why Are They Still Relevant? 🔍
In 2025, you might think that compasses are obsolete, replaced by GPS and smartphone navigation apps. 📱 However, the compass is far from being outdated. Here’s why compasses are still relevant in today’s world:
1. Independence from Technology ⚡
While smartphones and GPS are incredibly useful, they rely on batteries, satellites, and technology that can fail. Imagine you’re hiking in the wilderness and your phone dies? 😱 A compass doesn’t require batteries and will never lose connection to satellites. It’s the perfect backup tool when technology fails. ⚡🔋
2. Navigation in Remote Areas 🏞️
In places where GPS signals are weak or non-existent (like deep forests, canyons, or remote oceans), a traditional compass remains your most reliable method of finding direction. 🌲🌊 It’s a timeless tool that is always available for those who truly need it.
3. Cultural and Historical Significance 🏰
Compasses are also used for their cultural significance. From their use in ancient trade routes to the age of exploration, compasses have been symbolic of human curiosity and determination. 🧭 In 2025, many people still treasure old compasses as antiques, with a rich history behind them.
The Timeless Compass 🧭
From ancient explorers to modern adventurers, the compass has stood the test of time. 🕰️ The science behind how it works is rooted in the laws of magnetism and the Earth’s magnetic field, making it an incredibly simple yet powerful tool for navigation.
In a world increasingly dependent on technology, compasses still hold their ground because they provide a level of reliability and simplicity that GPS and smartphones can’t always offer. Whether you're hiking, sailing, or just out on a casual walk, understanding how your compass works is key to becoming a more confident and self-reliant navigator. 🌟
So, the next time you reach for a compass, remember that you're holding a tool that's been shaping human exploration for centuries. 🧭🌍 And with that, happy navigating!
