abed’s dialogue with jeff at the end of contemporary american poultry really resonates with me as an autistic person. i’ve always felt as though i’m the one that needs to change, in various ways. the way i communicate, the way i stim in public, my lack of intonation or facial expression, etc. hearing someone on tv that i identify with say that he isnt the one that needs to understand others made me so emotional.
even when i was with counsellors who were very supportive towards me including my autism when i had shown it more, they would still try to get me to change the way i communicate. masking is definitely important and some communities do not allow us to be ourselves, but i feel like counsellors shouldn’t encourage us to change when our communication isn’t inherently wrong.
abed acknowledging that it’s everyone else who should understand him, not the other way around, healed some part of me. i have never liked the idea of trying to talk to people as if i was neurotypical because “normal” communication has never appealed to me. i used to think i was selfish for this or horrible in some way for not attempting to change myself.
no communication is wrong; if you want to info-dump - do it. if you want to ignore intonation - do it.
we dont owe anyone anything, and community made me realise that weirdly. we aren’t the ones that need to change, society needs to accommodate us and try to empathise with us. abed’s character is so interesting and has helped me accept myself alot.
other episodes that i feel have helped me similarly:
• physical education
• critical film studies
• history 101

Title: "Chocolatey Complications and Anarchistic Solutions"
Summary: "Britta puts her hand on Frankie’s thigh and frowns. “Come on, Franks; you won’t let me help organize Leonard’s funeral, you won’t let me give you my special brownies, and you won’t let me therapize you. What can I do? I want to help.” She gives Frankie sad googly eyes and starts stroking her thigh. “Administration is hard. You’re swamped in paperwork. And I...I know how much the...revolution”—she almost whispers that part—“has been stressing you out. Let me help you.”
As much as Frankie’s trying to stay cognizant, she’s barely hearing Britta’s words, too focused on the logistics of removing the 100 pizza slices stuck to the ceiling of Study Room F. She sucks in some snot that’s dripped down her nose.
Britta’s face scrunches up and she takes her hand off of Frankie’s thigh. “Ew.”
Frankie gives her a tired glare.
"I mean, um, your bodily functions are completely normal and are nothing to be ashamed of and I love you?” Britta nervously smiles, looking like a cat that was just scolded for sinking her claws into her human’s legs.
Frankie briefly looks at Britta, back down and sighs. “A hot chocolate would be nice."
(While a revolution at Greendale majorly stresses out Frankie, Britta makes her a hot chocolate in an attempt at cheering her up. You can guess how well all that goes.)'

so I noticed something...who wants to help me solve a mystery?(screenshots of Abed's "targeting System" zoomed on the backwards bit and flipped) Nov 1 2013: I can't find anything significant about that date. Community wasn't airing in November. Wednesday, March 10, 2027: Maybe the day the movie comes out?

Britta Unfiltered 1x1 (”The Britta Perry Show”)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/43238095/chapters/108678436
Abed awkwardly pats her on the back. “I think we should get back to packing up the boxes.”
“Wait, before we do that,”—he looks at her—“I wanted to ask about my lack of character arc. I was just wondering, uh, what should I do about it?” Britta has a look of vulnerability on her face. Her eyes are wet from the tears, and her arms are crossed low over her stomach as she avoids eye contact with Abed.
He shrugs. “I don’t know. I don’t know what your character progression is supposed to be. You’re a wild card to me. You don’t really fit into the female stereotypes created by the white, straight men in the TV and movies that I’ve grown up with. Maybe that’s why I haven’t been able to completely figure you out—although in the last few years I’ve started to realize that even if we often fall into certain patterns, I haven’t completely figured anyone out. And by the end, your arc kind of fell by the wayside and got lost with everything else going on. Maybe that’s why you’re having trouble now. You’re not so much a character as you are just a flawed human.” Britta looks down and her lip starts to quiver. “And that’s what sets you free.” She furrows her brows and looks back up at Abed, confused. He continues. “Humans aren’t bound by rigid arcs. They aren’t bound by a story circle. And they aren’t bound by the shackles of dramatic convention. This applies to you more than it applies to any of the rest of us.”
Britta seems unsure. “Abed, what are you trying to say?”
“I’m saying that you’re free, Britta. You get to choose your arc. You get to choose where you go next.” Abed looks directly into her eyes. “What do you want, Britta?”
