like its a tually ridiculous bc if i have like conflicting feelings on somebody bc nuance is a thing that exists my brains likw Oh so youre making excuses for that awful person but then if i do black and white thinking and think of someone as ourely evil my brains like God are you stupid do you even know about nuance youre so reductive. nobody is purely good or evil and acting as if someone is innately evil is a horriblr thing to do bc its making excuses and coddling yourself into believing Oh incould never do something like thst because im not innately evil like they are . Nobody is ourely good or bad Except for you who is irredeemable and awful and going to hell forever and you are completely unequivocally an evil aeful horrible person. and it is your fault because you choose to be evil and also youve always been evil and you canr help it or fix it but its your choice as well and your fault. so
#To clarify please dont understand its not like. i dont make excuses for ppl i just try to like. ok. i feel like i am crawling on glass rn .#purely my own fault im not saying that whoever is reading this is like. Being ovefly critical of me for thinking what im saying is awful#thats not what i mean like i am not being clear and itis coming off like im evil and im making excuses for it . Okay . okay. what i mean to#say its that i dont think its good to like. look at somebody who does truly heinous things and label them as nonhuman or act as if its like.#something they cant control bc rheyre always evil. i dont think thats productive bc its ignoring what leads someone to do such awful things#im not saying like Oh well its not their fault NO i think there are things that are unforgiveable but im saying that writing it off as Oh#that person is judt evil thats why they did that is ignoring the fact that like. when somebody does bad things they arent doing it bc they#like. like being evil and doing bad things. they justify it and think its a good thing and it can happen to like. no thats not good phrasing#like. obviously i dont mean like. OH my hod how do i phrase this. like saying somebody did a bad thing bc they are evil is making an excuse#not to examine yourself and see like. bc you could be rationalizing your own bad actions. you know. everyone is capable of evil so it isnt#useful to just. bc like. you know ahat i mean does this make any sense im rlt worried it sounds like im making excuses for ppl#like im not saying ppl cant be evil or that just bc somebody does something evil that doesnt mean theyre evil i just mean like.#ppl dont do bad things bc theyre a bad person theyre a bad person if they do bad things. like. depending on the bad thing bc theres a#difference between like. being a shitty boyfriend as a 13 year old vs like. committing genocide. you know what i mean. like. idt being a#shitty bf as a 13 year old manes you eternally a bad person its bad things that you did and justify to yourself . and as long as you work on#that and dont do it again thats good. but if youre doing something Truly horrible like. you are a bad person not bc you were born evil and#thats why you do bsd things. you judtify yourself and dont examine your beliefs and your actions and then you do horrible things and doing#the horrible things makes you a bad person#but obviously no person is 100% evil not in a like. Oh yeah i murdered those orphans but i also picked a worm up off the sidewalk after the#rain. i just mean like. IDK IDK IDK i dont think im making sense i hope this is understandable

hi me again sorry
so, in my OR,(in my dr rn😝) melanie martinez is VERY problematic
especially with the SA allegations, which i do NOT support. I decided to never listen to her again, nor support her.
Yes, it hurt because i looked up to her so so much, but recently i realized i can just shift to a reality where she ISNT problematic
the problem is i dont know if that would be weird, or like invalidating for the victim of the SA, idk maybe im just overthinking it😭😭
ig im just asking for your opinion/advice for overthinking shifters TYY
So you're shifting to a reality in which she didn't commit any of those heinous acts, a reality in which you spare the SA victim from that fate, and you think that's a bad idea?
You're shifting to a better reality for everyone involved, and no it's not weird, it would be weird if you didn't do it actually.
Happy shifting ❤️

I DON'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO POST THIS BUT HERE U GO ‼️spoilers hsr 2.2‼️
I am aware the danganronpa fandom is prolly really inactive rn and I also have no idea if the HSR fandom is on here BUT I HAVE TO SHARE MY IDEAS (saiouma mixed into hsr)
Kokichi would be an emenator of the Enigmata or Elation:
I'm leaning Enigmata honestly, but his lies and hatered for violence would be a great motivation for him altering history to prevent humanity from ever commiting heinous crimes ever again (like the killing game?)
The remark from Shuichi after the 5th trial about Kokichi being a lie itself would fit perfectly for being someone either made by a fictionologist (like Gallahager) or being an emenator
He's also incredibly smart which would help him with covering up history, twisting facts and generally messing with public opinion/knowledge about history in subtle ways by using lies
His belief that lies can be used for good also factors into this
Messing with anyonr related to Nous, specifically Shuichi here but I think the memebers of the Genius Society would hate him <3
As an Emenator of Enigmata, it fits that his backstory is very unclear and messy/dkesn't make sense even when you have clues (like DICE for example)
Him not being given any credit for his plan in chapter 5 also solidifies him being perfect for this, as he wasn't written down to be remembered, leaving him with no legacy and no history
I take his ultimate to mean he is the perfect leader, so he fills a groups gaps and the support or drive, depending on what is needed, which is what I think a leader should be. Here, it would be used the way he did in the DRV3, which is to say he turned people against him (either by writing down false history and acting it out or making the planet hate him specifically therefore throwing the repeating history off it's rails with a new factor)
A lot of people would mistake him for a Masked Fool. He is friends with a bunch of them though and uses it to his advantage
Because he is so elusive and has very similar ideals to Mythus, he'd probably be given a lot of power. Deciphering the messed up history and stories he leaves behind is a giant pain
Would go very heavy on the planets that constantly repeat their own history, especially if it involves lots of killing and unreasonable authorities doing it
Hates the IPC, constantly messes with their records and
HOWEVER for the Elation:
Being a Masked Fool or even an Emenator would fit him becuase he loves pranks and subtly changes the situation is ways to fit himself (which is a characteristic of Aha)
Messing with people, making fun of people, having his own agenda and generally orchestrating everything from the background works as well.
And Shuichi would probably be part of Genius Society and blessed by Nous, the Aeon of Erudition:
As is customary for anyone in the GS, he would live a life engrossed in his own work, trying to find the truth of cases across the cosmos
The cases he solves are very important, usually solving mysteries connected to important figures in the universe or were unsolved for years before being solved by him, prompting Nous to actually notice him
A lot of people dislike him for revealing corrupt leaders, especially the IPC, because he exposed how horrible they were and as a result the IPC was unable to invade his home planet
Accidentally solved a case where an Aeon was involved, it was a really big scale conflict/event and he got involved, then solved it
Is curious about the Aeons since (and because he was blessed by Nous). Has been invited to work on the Simulated Universe, where he tries to solve historical events like the Swarm, dissapearance of Aeons and what could've happened to them
Probably constantly getting fucked with by Kokichi, by having his records of cases and notes of findings from years ago altered. He gets targeted because of a case he solved earlier in his life, where he exposed that someone messed with the evidence, that person having been Kokichi
He always figures out when his records were messed with, while alse realising that Kokichi was the one doing it, but he could never solidly prove it, causing him to continue his research on the other
Their end comes when Shuichi fully realises who Kokichi is and finds out everything there is to know. None of the information makes sense, accept for the others name. He then dubs Kokichi a "living lie" and calls him by the only things he's certain is true, prompting the Eminator of Enigmata to start fizzling away, as he has become "real" because of Shuichi solidifying him as "real" and "true" by the use of his name instead of a "lie" and "nonexistent" or "altered"
(this is because the Enigmata wants history to be obscured and therefore untrue, which is why I believe it's Eminators would follow, having fabricated lives with no records to show their true history.)
Shuichi would then spend his whole life trying and forget Kokichi's true name, just so he could see him one more time.

So we all know how the main theme of Veilguard is gonna be Regret, right? Why stop there? Why not assign theme-demons to the other games as well?
Origins: Despair/desperation
Aside from generally being what you feel when there's a Darkspawn horde ravaging your country, despair is what sets the whole plot in motion and keeps appearing in the individual origins and minor plot points throughout the story.
Everything Loghain does he does out of desperation. He is desperate to preserve the Ferelden he knows because he genuinely believes he is the only one who can. He turns to heinous acts because he is desperate to win and he sees no other way out.
Grey Wardens in general can be summed up by "desperate times, desperate measures". The Warden, too, can commit horrible crimes to get the power to oppose the Blight, because times are desperate.
Despair is what makes most of the origin characters join the Wardens. Cousland just lost their family. Tabris/Brosca are about to be executed. Amell/Surana are about to be shipped to Aeonar. Aeducan is dying in the Deep Roads. Mahariel is dying of the Blight.
As early as Lothering, you fight and kill people whose only reason for attacking you is desperation.
Also, what colour is the Warden associated with? Blue. What colour are despair demons? Also blue.
(me rn:)
Tumblr media
Dragon Age II: [helpless] Rage
Where in Origins, times were desperate, but ultimately you had the power to win, few games manage to convey the utter feeling of powerlesness in the face of fate and societal change as DAII.
Despair may drive the Warden to questionable measures to achieve victory, but nothing Hawke does can ever lead to even just losing less, nevermind actually winning.
Almost every single character is a powerless victim of circumstance and their own nature. All they can do is rage impotently against the heavens.
Rage at being powerless to reclaim the Tome of Koslun drives the Arishok to his conquest of Kirkwall.
Rage is what threatens to consume Fenris throughout his arc.
And it is rage at the plight of mages that corrupts Justice into Vengeance.
Also, Hawke's colour is red. Just like that of Rage demons.
Inquisition: Fear
Or, more specifically, fear of there being no higher power, but also of it actually existing.
Pride is a very strong contender here, but please, indulge my mental gymnastics so we can fit into my demon colour scheme theory for a moment.
While pride is definitely the cardinal sin that lead Corypheus to try and usurp the throne of the gods the first time, I would argue that in Inquisition, it is fear that drives him more. He claims there is no higher power, that the Golden City was empty. And that terrifies him. He wants to become a god so there is one. In the end, he desperately wants divinity to exists in the world - when the Inquisitor defeats him and all seems lost, he calls out to Dumat, hoping he was wrong and there actually are gods.
Fear is definitely what drives the entire plot of Here Lies the Abyss.
Sera is absolutely terrified of magic and the Fade, but also the Elven gods. But she seems fine with the Maker. That is because the Maker is an absent god. She is free of His influence. But spirits and the Creators are hands-on and, if real, influence events. There is desire in her for there to be something divine, but also fear of that divinity actually reaching out.
Solas potentially leaves the love of his life because he is afraid that loving her, acknowledging there is something in this world worthy of love, would prevent him from doing what he sees as his duty.
Also, Inquisitor green, Fear demon also green or smth.
Now, Veilguard is really gonna mess with my colour scheme, isn't it...

Kakegurui chapter! (Ye, El Fili chapter 11)
Tumblr media
I love how Padre irene is just... smiling
Tumblr media
Camorra losing like a kid LOL (Padre Irene still smiling... creepy)
Tumblr media
Diamonds and "values"? BET
Oh my goodness SIMOUN, OF ALL PEOPLE
Tumblr media
Part 2 later
aaaaa sorry this had sat too long on my inbox my friend!! i haven't been doing well for the past few weeks BUT i have also gathered enough brain cells to reread some of el fili to familiarize myself again with the events as i've told last time - it has been a while but here i am still ready to beat the shit out of simoun-
everyone in this chapter is very strangle-material ^^ these bitches do nothing but sip tea, gossip and lie to each other's faces. it's incredible. in wednesdays they wear pink
and i love how their personalities shine through in this scene of them playing cards alone lmao - padre irene with his goody-two shoes act, padre sibyla generally not giving a shit, padre camorra (ew) being a goofster (albeit unintentionally this time) and the general being such a doormat (and his poor secretary who just wants to do his job)
AND YEAH LMAO need camorra to play the rampant online combat games we have now can you imagine the way he'd shit talk his enemies
gaah simoun's propositions…ngl kinda chilling! padre sibyla about to drop banger lines and this man's just like "ok if i win u'd say dumb shit that would go against what your religion literally stands for just to further demonstrate the power you all hold against these people under you rule" and THEN "i'd also get to commit literal violations of human rights. as a little treat for myself. :)" like bro???? chill man jesus
and the thing with him being like "we are also tulisans but we're not declaring ourselves to be; that's why these people won't rebel against us" fucks. so hard. and tbh fits so well with our administration rn lmfao because who are they even fooling. literally we're being robbed of our resources but the people that have been blinded by their propaganda wouldn't believe them to be doing anything heinous as long as they're spouting their 'bagong Pilipinas' bullshit. absolutely wild that even these little details can still be paralleled to the happenings of today
AAAA ANYWAY going over to part 2 now!!

Heyy whatcha been getting into lately? Alternatively, what have you been enjoying being a hater of lately?
okay first hello i love how this question is phrased hajdks very on brand for me and two uhhh oh boy a lot of stuff tbh!
so to preface. over the years i’ve had many phases where i get out of some irl person based media (usually 1d or some random tv show) and back into animated series, then the inverse happens, the cycle repeats, etc.? so i’m currently back into animated stuff as well as fully leaning into kpop everywhere instead of what i was doing before, where i was trying to limit my posting in general or limiting it to twitter under the guise of trying to seem slightly Normal™️ but now i’m fully leaning into whatever makes me happy and inspired and if that makes me annoying so be it
anyway—in terms of animated shows i’ve been watching one piece for almost a year now as for some reason i couldn’t get into it when i was younger and then was deterred by the series length, but i’m really enjoying it! i’m about to start the long ring long island arc if that means anything to anyone lol. i’ve also been watching and loooving dungeon meshi, and i’m currently reading it as well! i tried reading it a few years ago and stopped a few chapters in (idr why) but now i’m hooked and am struggling to pace myself…. i might try and do some fanart soon 👀
with kpop mmmm i’ve actually been a casual fan since like 2010 (listened to some 2008-2009 but it was mostly early shinee and random kpop compilations on youtube lmao) but have gotten in and out of it several times? now though i’ve been pretty Involved consistently since 2019/2020, although the groups i follow the closest are ateez, oneus and nct (127)!
i saw oneus in seattle last month after missing them twice and had such a good time (i still haven’t finished sorting my pictures though and haven’t posted like. any oops) and i am tryyyying (like. praying on my hands and knees lighting candles talking to the moon levels level trying) to get my hands on VIP1 tickets for ateez in tacoma and tickets go live next week so wish me luck as i will definitely need it with how pricey it’s likely to be… but also i will proudly commit heinous deplorable acts for ateez barricade sooo either way i’m determined to get my way? aka: i want and need my own y/n moment ahfksksn
also to clarify i’m not a shipper or whatever when it comes to kpop! i may enjoy the odd fic or will cringe read things with my friends but it’s nothing like HL for me; it’s a very different dynamic overall and i don’t get those kinda vibes in a serious way from any groups i follow? although with ateez… i can kinda see why they attract some of those kinds of fans i’m ngl
and on the side, i’ve actually been working on original content again! the one group of ocs i tend to pick up and put down has been temporarily sidelined for a pair i dumped a few years back but am currently reworking and actually have a story for now! idk if i’ll do anything proper with said story as comics are exhausting so rn i’m mostly word-vomming into docs and trying to nail down my character designs. when i’ve got things worth sharing though i do plan to share here as well, if anyone would be interested 👉👈
alternately when it comes to my haterism… i still greatly dislike and am exhausted with miss swiftie for numerous reasons and my god my art twitter is swathed in h*zbin h*tel content?? like actually plagued?? otherwise though there are just things i wish i saw less because i’m simply just not interested right now (aka 1d stuff) or in general and don’t want to start disliking those things because i’m seeing them too much
ok def rambled more than i meant to oopsie doopsie but yeah uhh that’s kinda it! anon i hope you are well and enjoying yourself in whatever you are doing rn 💕 and feel free to share if you feel so inclined to!

ty for the thoughtful response! :) i appreciate it, and it helped put more things into perspective for me (kinda?? i'm still juggling my thoughts about him tbh)
i'm currently on veilguard!tiktok rn, and thank god, but a lot of the discourse surrounding the various endings of the game have me in circles and i agree with (mostly) all of it in terms of characterization: i.e., solas is a wise/curious/mischievous spirit by nature (tho it often doesn't feel like it post-dai) AND he is capable of and continues to commit great atrocities (while also feeling bad about them, i guess). etc etc etc, bc there's obv a lot to his canon character as we know it.
spoilers for those who haven't finished the game yet below:
for example, as someone who romanced solas in dai and was active in the solavellan community for awhile, i couldn't come to terms with why he made me so mad despite being drawn to and romancing him. and then watching him interact with rook, i was mad AGAIN but it felt like a completely different kind of irritation. i suppose, to me, even in rl, there is nothing more terrifying than a powerful man who commits heinous (sometimes war) crimes, genuinely feels remorse, and then continues to do them. that dissonance i think speaks to the very core of what we're capable of as people and it is sooooo uncomfortable.
with that being said, obv if you manage to convince him to do the right thing by bringing out mythal, this final act of walking away mitigates the disaster bringing the veil down would incur. (and yes, i know there is a good chunk of the fandom that wants to help him do that, to each their own.) the thing that i can't get over (as a former solasmancer) is that people alive in thedas in its current era are still feeling the tremendous and Bad™️ repercussions of things he did 2k years ago, and in 2/3 of the endings, he has every intention of bringing about another calamity.
ehhh, i don't want this to be too long !! and i'm still working it out! my point is, 1) i think ur right about how he might want to be treated, what he truly desires vs what came to be, AND that he is not honest with rook in terms of information/intentions he gives them throughout the game (tho i still think there's something there with rook knowing who he is from the beginning, which i think is a more accurate summation of what i was trying to get at :) and then 2) "rook is a means to an end." yes!! i agree!! what i love about that is that rook is also the only protag we've gotten that can trick his ass back!!! not even lavellan can convince him to stop in the final cutscene. it's so cathartic to play as someone who can trick the trickster! that, i think, is what i ultimately meant about "authenticity" existing in this... rival-thing rook and he has going on.
i've been trying to figure out if i'm insane (or just deliciously gaslighted) for thinking solas has way more chemistry with rook than with lavellan??? @solasmancers do not come for me !! i am simply touting, politely, that i as a player fundamentally did not and could not understand how others thought solas was in any way, shape, or form, integrous to lavellan when a BAT-SHIT crazy power dynamic incessantly undermined (and ultimately, as far as dai is concerned, destroyed) their bond. it's more than "he is stronger and wiser than her due to various but mysterious reasons"—it is, at worst, a god-king versus their culturally-subjugated constituent (about two thousand times removed, i guess, but still).
like
even though more than half of the dialogue wheel options in veilguard encourage some form of mockery or criticism to solas when conversing with him in the fade prison, i just felt a tension that, for me, didn't exist between him and lavellan in inquisition—a tension, AND, a potential for authentic connection between him and rook. in a lot of cases, where there is sincerity there can also be something more, and i'm just so interested in exploring that in fandom art/discourse tbh.
the idea of solas, exposed for who and what he is (whatever that is to ur rook), and then rook, who may not be as strong as he, but who deadass (even if unintentionally) locked him the fuck up and is like, "help me or i swear to SHIT",,,, before having a half-dozen other convos where u can just straight up compliment each other, only for solas to repeatedly backstab rook until it all comes to a head at the end??? SUBLIME

i’m literally waiting in the lgbt rep in the loki show & the “visibility” of black women in pivotal roles on it as advertised in interviews cause rn i’m just seeing white lady better than everyone syndrome show
This is a great ask and I have several thoughts on this so buckle up guys, gals, and pals bc this is going to get long. Here’s the thing. Visibility does not equal good representation. Disney seems to have forgotten that the FRAMING matters the most of all. And boy oh boy does the show fail on that front.
“The Birth of a Nation” is a famous pro-KKK film from 1915 which is still influential today in some white nationalist circles. This film actually has a lot of black characters. Many of those black characters are portrayed by white actors in blackface, but let’s ignore that issue for a second and pretend that they hired only black actors for those roles. Guess what? That still wouldn’t make the film progressive or have it count as good representation in any way. Why? Well because the film is repugnant, racist propaganda. The point of having black characters in the film is to demonstrate to audiences that they are inherently inferior, unintelligent, sexually aggressive and violent and that the “heroic” KKK is needed to defend against them. This is one of the most famous racist films of all time and a lot of the ideas represented in it are still problems today. Just having black characters in the film doesn’t mean that it counts as good representation or is some victory of progressivism.
Similarly Jewish characters figure very prominently in a lot of Nazi films. These characters aren’t implied to be Jewish or Jewish coded or whatever. They are explicitly Jewish. Diversity win right? Not so much! Because again, FRAMING MATTERS. The Nazis put Jewish characters into their films in order to portray them as greedy, conniving, cowardly, selfish, violent, and dangerous and to show why they were supposedly a blight on German society and needed to be exterminated. So again. Just having Jewish characters who are “visible” doesn’t mean the films aren’t horrifically bigoted and harmful and the very opposite of good representation.
Now let’s get back to the Loki Series and the way it claims to be progressive and throws around “representation” like a buzzword when it has absolutely no right to be doing so. There are several black women in the cast whose characters are in positions of power. That’s true. However, their characters are not granted much focus. They don’t have much depth or complexity. We don’t really know much about their flaws or vulnerabilities. Why does that matter? Because that’s what HUMANIZES a character. These characters are treated more as cardboard cutouts than as humans.
But it gets A LOT worse than that. My biggest issue is that these characters are extremely complicit in the actions of the TVA - a violent, genocidal, fascistic, policing organization that regularly commits acts of torture, enslavement, and violation of due process and that is trying to eliminate free will. Now I’m not saying you cannot have black characters who are villains. Of course you can. No group of people are a monolith and acting like any group is just uniformly pure and perfect is very insulting and infantilizing. However, if you had a movie with all black female characters and the only white males were members of a fascistic policing organization it would certainly feel like the narrative was saying something with that, and the opposite is also true.
But it still gets EVEN WORSE. Because the TVA despite being objectively evil (yes they are. there is no excuse for torture and slavery and anybody coming into my replies to defend such heinous acts needs to go study their history bc I shouldn’t have to argue with you about this) is hero coded. We’re supposed to laugh at their treatment of Loki and think it’s justified. It’s not. Full stop. They torture him and they enslave him. THAT ISN’T OK. But it’s treated as a joke. And the characters who are complicit in it are absolved of their involvement.
Even the ones who later turn against the TVA somewhat don’t feel any guilt about what they have been involved in, because according to the narrative they never did anything so terrible. B-15 gets her memories back and her focus is on herself - “I was happy” rather than on all the people she victimized while she wasn’t in her right mind. Because the narrative wants us to forget about that and think the TVA is mostly alright really. We know this because Loki views Mobius as a friend despite the fact that Mobius has never treated him as a friend - he has tortured him, mocked him, humiliated him, and enslaved him. And the narrative says it’s ok.
And I can’t help feel that the writer - Mike Waldron - is using these black characters to try to insulate the TVA from criticism and push his vile pro authoritarian narrative. It is worth noting that Mike Waldron is white and male. Now I am not at ALL saying that white men cannot write characters who are female or black or any other group they don’t belong to so no one put words in my mouth. They can and they should. But they should do so responsibly (just like writers should depict trauma responsibly etc). And Mike doesn’t seem to be doing so responsibly.
Now I don’t know whether Mike has sympathies with rightwing ideologies, but one of the things I’ve studied irl is rightwing extremism, and some things he has said certainly make me think that he might. The way he writes “representation” in his stories also feels like a bigot’s idea of “what liberals want.” Like how the women are these empty badasses with no personality who demean and mistreat the male characters.
Mike once made a very telling comment about how the show is great because Loki spends a lot of time “under the thumb of strong black women” and to me that is indicative of his world view. He seems to view the idea of racial justice and racial equality as inherently violent and oppressive. When that isn’t the point at all. Equality, whether between genders or races etc isn’t about supremacy. It’s about...EQUALITY! Making sure that everyone is treated fairly. It’s not about switching who the oppressor is. It’s about liberating everyone. It’s like when people say “Well don’t all lives matter?” in response to “Black Lives Matter.” Of course they do. That’s the point of Black Lives Matter. It’s to make sure that all lives do matter - including black lives! It’s not about saying that only black lives matter. It’s about making sure that black and brown lives matter too. Mike’s viewpoint seems to be consistent with rightwing scare tactics about how diversity and racial equality will lead to “white replacement” or “white genocide” or various other conspiracies where white people end up being killed or oppressed. And that seems to have carried over into his work. The black characters are all in positions of power and use that power in ways that are abusive.
But more pernicious still is the fact that I feel like he’s using black characters to prop up his fascistic policing organization and insulate it from criticism. I feel like he’s the conservative who thinks he can “outsmart” the the liberals by being like ‘see. I made the fascistic police black so no one can criticize them now haha im so clever.’ And no Mike. It doesn’t work like that because this is fiction and YOU ARE THE ONE WHO WROTE IT THAT WAY. You are the one who chose to have the only black women characters be abusive authority figures. And guess what? Someone who uses their power to abuse and enslave and torture is evil no matter what race they are. And as I said before it’s fine to have villains who aren’t white, but why are these the only prominent black female characters? “People complicit in police brutality and enslavement of others” is not good representation and it’s also really tone deaf. And it doesn’t at all excuse the pro-abuse, pro-torture, pro-authoritarian messaging of the show. It just makes it worse because he is trying to call it good representation and using the inclusion of these black characters to try to achieve his agenda.
I could say a lot more about this but I also want to talk about the queer representation. Because wow, is it not good. Again, framing matters. Just like “The Birth of a Nation” isn’t progressive just because not all the characters are white, the Loki Series isn’t progressive just because not all the characters are straight. In fact it’s the opposite of progressive. The queer “representation” feels straight out of bigoted propaganda. It’s honestly frightening how viciously cruel it is. Loki’s personality traits have been retconned to map onto harmful stereotypes about queer men. He is overly expressive, makes grand gestures, is flamboyant, cowardly, dishonest, weak, bad at fighting, lazy, spineless, meek, unused to exercise etc. Now a person could be all these things and also happen to be queer. However, Loki was never like this before. His character was retconned to be this way only in this series where he is confirmed to be queer.
Furthermore, the entire premise of the series seems to be that it is funny and entertaining and justified when Loki is dehumanized, mocked, humiliated, hurt, tortured, beaten, assaulted, and/or robbed of his dignity. That’s the premise. That’s the whole show. HOW THE FUCK IS THAT PROGRESSIVE?!?! No really. I want Mike to explain the joke to me. Because the joke can’t be “it’s funny when people get hit in the face” because that sort of thing isn’t routinely happening to Mobius or to other characters. It’s only happening to Loki who is coded as the Other in many different ways and who has been confirmed to be a queer man.
So why is it ok when it happens to him? Why is it funny? Why is the point of him being stripped naked not that this is a horrible violation but that it’s funny that he’s scared? Why is him being repeatedly kicked in the groin (and btw that kind of sexual violence has commonly been used against queer men) supposed to be funny? Why are we supposed to jeer and glory in his degradation and think he deserves it? Because I'm not getting it Mike. Explain the joke to me. I dare you.
In fact I dare Mike to explain how any of the show is progressive or counts as good representation. Yes sure the show has female characters and black female characters and queer characters. But that’s not enough. The FRAMING matters. So c’mon Mike. Don't just tell me what kinds of identities you included in your show. Explain to me why they occupy the roles they do.
I dare you.
