Artists, let’s talk about Instagram commission scammers

There’s been a huge rise in commission scammers recently, mostly on Instagram. A lot of new artists don’t know what to look out for, so I figured this might help people.

How they begin

Usually the scammer will write to you asking about a commission. Something deceptively cute - mostly I encounter asks about pet portraits, with one or two photos sent. They’ll probably try to sell you a sweet little story, like “It’s for my son’s birthday”. They will insist that they love your artwork and style, even though they don’t follow you or never liked a single piece of your art.

What to look out for:

Their profiles will either be private, empty, or filled with very generic stuff, dating at most a few years back.

Their language will be very simple, rushed or downright bad. They might use weird emojis that nobody ever uses. They will probably send impatient “??” when you don’t answer immediately. They’re in a crunch - lots of people to scam, you know. 

They’ll give you absolutely no guidelines. No hints on style, contents aside from (usually) the pet and often a name written on the artwork, no theme. Anything you draw will be perfect. Full artistic freedom. In reality they don’t really care for this part.

They’ll offer you a ridiculous amount of money. Usually 100 or 300 USD (EDIT: I know it might not be a lot for some work. What I mean here - way higher than your asking price, 100 and 300 are standard rates they give). They’ll often put in a phrase like “I am willing to compensate you financially” and “I want the best you can draw”, peppered with vague praise. It will most likely sound way too good to be true. That’s because it is.

Where the scam actually happens

If you agree, they will ask you for a payment method. They’ll try to get to this part as soon as possible. 

Usually, they’ll insist on PayPal. And not just any PayPal. They’ll always insist on sending you a transfer immediately. None of that PayPal Invoice stuff (although some do have methods for that, too). They’ll really, REALLY want to get your PayPal email address and name for the transfer - that’s what they’re after. If you insist on any other method, they’ll just circle back to the transfer “for easiest method”. If you do provide them with the info, most likely you’ll soon get a scam email. It most likely be a message with a link that will ultimately lead to bleeding you dry. Never, and I mean NEVER click on any emails or links you get from them. It’s like with any other scam emails you can ever get.

A few things can happen here:

They overpay you and ask for the difference to be wired back. Usually it will go to a different account and you’ll never see that money again. 

They’ll overpay you “for shipping costs” and ask you to forward the difference to their shipping company. Just like before, you’ll never see that money again.

The actual owner of the account (yes, they most likely use stolen accounts to wire from) will realize there’s been something sketchy going on and request a refund via official channels. Your account will be charged with fees and/or you get in trouble for fraudulent transactions. 

You will transfer the money from your PayPal credit to your bank account and they will make a shitstorm when they want their money back, making your life a living hell. They will call you a scammer, a thief, make wild claims, wearing you down and forcing you into wiring money “back” - aka to their final destination account. 

Never, EVER wire money to anyone. This is not how it’s supposed to go. Use PayPal Invoice for secure exchanges where the client needs to provide you with their email, not the other way around.

What to do when you encounter a scammer:

Ask the right questions: inquire about the style, which artwork of yours they like, as much details as you can. They won’t supply you with any good answers.

Don’t let the rush of the exchange, their praise and the promise of insanely good money to get to you. That’s how they operate, that’s how they make you lose vigilance. 

Don’t engage them. As soon as you realize it might be a scam, block them. The sense of urgency they create with their rushed exchange, and pressure they put on you will sooner or later get to you and you might do something that you’ll regret later.

Never wire money to anyone. Never give out your personal data. Never provide your email, name, address or credit card info. 

Don’t be deceived by receiving a payment, if you somehow agree to go along with it. Just because it’s there now doesn’t mean it can’t be withdrawn. 

Here is a very standard example of such an exchange. I realized it’s a scam pretty fast and went along with it, because I wanted good screenshots for you guys, so I tried going very “by the book” with it. 

Please share this post, make it reach as many artists as possible. Let young or inexperienced artists know that this is going on. So many people have no idea that this is a thing. Let’s help each other out. If you think I missed any relevant info, do add it as an rb!

I’ll start with some news.

I am currently locked out of my twitter account. We did everything we could to try to get it back, but no matter what happens, it will most likely take some time.

I don’t like bringing attention to this kind of stuff because we have tons of other things to talk about which are more important than some toddlers trying to obliterate us for 1000th time (frankly I would rather talk about the colour of Leona’s butthole), but this time it’s kind of serious and important. We don’t know what’s going to happen next, but for now I wanted to say that if we won’t get the account back in time or will lose it indefinitely, we will have to ask for your help. I am sorry for that in advance.

Mass-reporting is wild, eh?

I am rambling a bit, and I didn’t really want to complain, because I know for a fact it would give satisfaction to some people, but you know? I am going to complain: it sucks ass. It happened at the worst time possible and it happened over nothing (literally, the art that got it was a Todd/Wallace non-sexual piece that got too many likes for children’s liking). I don’t care if people don’t like us, I don’t care if they gossip with their girlies about us, all I want is for them to leave us the fuck alone and let us do our thing in peace. Imagine being so unbelievably boring and so incredibly unlikeable and unable to make meaningful connections not only with other people but also with any kind of media that you just have to go out of your way to ruin things for others because this is the only thing that makes your immature brain produce something that even remotely resembles joy. Because your own pathetic self is so deeply insecure and constantly frustrated at yourself that you just have to create an illusion of control over someone else to feel important. I can’t even call it a troll behavior – at least trolls are funny sometimes. This is just someone who hit a midlife crisis at the age of 16 and made it my problem for some reason.  

And yet, it’s okay. Even if we end up losing our account, it’ll be a huge disappointment and it will hurt us tremendously, it already did. And it’s scary to think about this scenario, and it’s difficult to talk about how, if it happens, that it’s going to be okay. But eventually we’ll get over it and build ourselves up again, just like we did before several times. And these clowns will still be boring, unlikeable, lonely and very likely shit at drawing.

So yeah. Take care of yourself and block everyone who seems suspicious on sight. It’s not a panacea, but certainly is helpful.

Ohh you’re so right Anon, it was the ultimate late ‘00/early ’10 aesthetic! Boys in vests with bows/ties, crosses and rosaries and traumatic and problematic backstories lol I really miss it sometimes. What an era.

I personally haven’t read/watched Pandora Hearts, but Katsu did! But it was even before we met… So my only association with this title is that Katsu’s old username was “ozbezariusnya” 🥰 Oh, and that Gilbert (?) looks very cute, but let’s be honest, of course I would think he is cute.

As for our background for shipping them, we just really really love loyal characters that are a bit unhinged about their loyalty and love/obsession. So we didn’t even have a choice, they stole our hearts… and Malleus is very interesting in his interactions with Sebek too; he is annoyed by him sometimes, but he tolerates a lot and teases him.

As for the ship itself, we tend to think that in addition to Sebek being loyal and obsessive with Malleus, he is also deeply in love with him ever since he was a child. He is conflicted because he really wants to be his lover, but also thinks that he isn’t worthy. Malleus is amused by Sebek and allows him to do much more than he probably should. Actually, I think I talked about their dynamic in this post!

I do digital, watercolour and beadwork commissions specialising in creature and character design and illustration. I can do fantasy, sci-fi and horror; for more examples please see my portfolio.

I am happy to work from photo or art references, writen descriptions or stick-figure drawings, and I will always send a sketch for your approval before finalising it. I ask for payment upon completion but before delivery, upon receipt of payment I'll provide high and low resolution versions of the image, as well as a version optimised for printing.

This can really be whatever you want it to be. A stained glass window summarising a character's emotional arc over the course of a story, an epic fight scene, a ridiculously detailed dragon? My beadwork also has a lot of scope for varriation in complexity so rather than have pages and pages of things I could do and what I'd charge for them, I think it's easier for all involved to say ask and I'll give you an estimate.

9. …what my ideal endgame for them is.

The sequel I never wrote for "Until Death or England Do Us Part", in which they are serving as Commodore and Flag Captain while crankily, fussily married. Hornblower is intolerable as a husband, petty and sniping and refusing to show anything that might be construed as favoritism toward his husband (and you know by "favoritism" he means "affection"), while Bush is all, "You have my utmost loyalty and obedience as an officer, and of course I love you no matter how insufferable you are, but don't expect me to warm your bed while you behave like that." And just about the time that Bush has managed to drill it through Hornblower's thick skull that he can show some affection and even express an apology without the world coming to an end…

…Hornblower comes down with cholera, and Bush, for the sake of the service, has to abandon him in Riga.

Come spring, he resigns his posting to the Nonsuch so that he can hitch a ride on the Clam back to Riga, either to nurse Hornblower or to bury him, he doesn't know which -- and then of course Hornblower finds out he gave up his posting to the Nonsuch and reads him the riot act (like HELL the Admiralty is going to give you another ship after that!), and Bush openly weeps because he's so goddamn relieved to have his cranky, crotchety, insufferable husband back.

And the two of them go on like that until the end of the war (Hornblower does manage to get Bush another ship), and then when the Napoleonic wars end, they go work for an upstart republican navy in South America and do it all over again.

Until the morning comes that Bush is too arthritic to relish the shipboard life, at which point Hornblower decides fuck this for a game of soldiers and they resign their commissions and retire to Naples, where the Code Napoleon is still in effect and thus homosexuality is still legal, and the two of them companionably row into their sunset years, watching the sun rise behind Vesuvius while they eat sfogliatelle and drink sweet coffee and bicker about the nature of happiness.

Except for the times that Hornblower is compelled to meddle with the shipping down in the harbour, he and Bush saving the day through cleverness and wit and sheer grit one last time…

15. …how I wish their story would go/would have gone.

During that two days leave in Kingston, early in the time they knew each other, they fucking admit to each other how sweet they are on the other, how they yearn for the other's admiration and approbation, and, yes, they fuck about it.

And while both are manfully resigned to nothing coming of it -- Hornblower has his new command, after all, and Bush his bedbugs to battle -- they know. And so when fate tips them into each other's arms again in Portsmouth six months later, it's the beginning of a very restrained, very discreet, on-again-off-again situationship that shapes both their lives. Maybe Hornblower is still foolish enough to get married to Maria. (He has an idea that it will bring some safety to he and Bush, if he can demonstrate his heterosexuality with a wife and children, whereas Maria wants to get out of her mother's boardinghouse and start a life and family of her own. Bush thinks this marriage idea is the greatest foolishness he's ever heard of, but he's prepared to suffer it if he and Maria can come to an understanding. They do. And in time, something more than an understanding.) But all three of them go into it with their eyes wide open, and when grief comes to visit the little Hornblower family, Bush cries more freely than Hornblower can.

And the whole situationship sometimes gets stiff and weird and awkward (because Hornblower is stiff and weird and awkward), but it's also the easiest and most-right thing either of them has ever done, and even if they agree (from an excess of practicality) to break it off when Hornblower gets promoted into a different ship without Bush, they each keep faith with the other even in the off times.

It all ends at Caudebec, of course. Every relationship ends: either you split up or one of you dies (or both of you die), and everyone knows that life in the service consists of many partings. But they had loved each other before the end, loved each other as best as they knew how. And it was imperfect and flawed and far too short, but what love isn't? Hornblower builds his pyramid of skulls to Bush's memory, and he lets himself weep.

He's never the same after that. But why should he be the same? Loving Bush, and being loved by Bush, changed him. Mostly he tries not to think of Bush; mostly he succeeds. But through custom and experience, during his time with Bush he learned to be a little more demonstrative, a little more open to the softer emotions. And while Richard has no real memories of Bush, Bush still has a lasting legacy in the relationship that Richard has with his father. As Richard leaves the easy affection of babyhood behind, grows into the awkwardness of his teenage years, Hornblower never quite retreats into the stiff formality of so many fathers. He once learned how to love and be loved, and those lessons serve him well with Richard.

And what better legacy can a man have?

10. …rate the level of stupid they reach in their pining.

Bush is eminently sensible in his pining. He can't have Hornblower and he knows he can't have Hornblower, and so that's the end of it. He sublimates all his pining into service, and that is very nearly enough for him. (And as for that last gap between what he can have and what he wants? Well, what of it? The sea is made of tears, and grows saltier every day.)

Which is just as well, for Hornblower manages to incorporate AT LEAST two peoples' worth of stupid into his own practice. He could have everything he wanted if he just opened his mouth and asked for it. But will he? No, he will not. Hell, he won't even admit to himself that he wants it. He'll just pine and yearn and every day die a little more inside, and steadfastly refuse to admit to any of it. Not even to himself, not even in the very deepest dark of night, lying awake and torturing himself with the mystery of why he'll never be happy…

♥~Ways to have your voice heard~♥

No matter your ship preferences, can say I think the fandom can agree that we would love more than what we were given for the final season of The Umbrella Academy. The show was suppose to run for six seasons. Last season went from the usual 10 episodes to 6 with the more budget costly scenes cut. Lila and Five were suppose to be the focal point of the season. Yet most likely most of their scenes were cut. Know the series is over and done now but that's not to say we cannot be given the gift of the cut scenes for public viewing from Netflix. The deleted scenes maybe wouldn't be all lila/five and deal with the other characters. (If you aren't a shipper) A reminder that their is an ongoing petition to have those deleted scenes released to us. Netflix has shown they are receptive to fan opinions to a certain extent. Having saved axed series before in the past and apparently being generous with going from just wanting a movie ending for Umbrella academy to a half season. The best thing we can do before interest dies out is to let our voices be heard that we do enjoy and want to see anything that was lost to us regarding our favorite dysfunctional family. So shipper wise, please do your best to mention on social and around the internet your desires for what was cut. Maybe even show interest for a spin-off with Five and lila, time commission setting. Both Aiden and Ritu have expressed interest in delving into these characters more. The showrunner has mentioned a couple times about wanting to focus a spinoff on hazel & cha cha with the time commission. That could open doors to bring back the original characters when dealing with time. See insights to other versions of the characters we know and love. Of course get focus on a more fleshed out story with lila and five's adventures and friendship and eventual relationship in the lost 7 years. Listed below are ways to contact the powers that be! My little baby, my firstborn, the first Rook I designed. Used to work as a lil kid in Skyhold's kitchen, until he met the demon Enfenim in that abandoned library hidden there, befriending him (it's another OCs of mines, check my pinned!)

Long story short he gets adopted by my Lavellan after his magic manifested, in the kitchens. Near boiling oil. The left side of his face and shoulder is covered in burn scars. Still he grows up to be a great but VERY unlucky mage, to the point he considers himself bad news and slowly starts to embrace this side of him in a selfdeprecating way. After yet another incident, he leaves her mother and their community, deciding he wants to make just one single good thing for her: finding Solas. Hiding his identity he ends up joining the crows, finding out he's quite good as an assassin. Relationship wise I brutally ship him with Elgar'nan, but more specifically he's in a weird... double triangle romboid (?) relationship with also Sulenan and Bellara??? (aka Sulenan also has a relationship with all of them but Bellara and Elgar'nan don't deal with each other.... unless the game will state otherwise >:D) He's hella young, in his early twenties, but usually fakes his age and tries to pass as someone older. He's also the shortest elf you'll ever meet.

◆ Saara(?) "Rook"

Qunari ◆ female ◆ she/her Veil Jumpers ◆ Bow Rogue (Arcane Archer)

She's meant to be the real Rook, you know, the one who Varric recruits. Qunari who was taken in by a (very open minded) Dalish clan. I'm still unsure if she was born in the Qun or not, in any case she embraced the elven culture as her own. She can be considered diplomatic and understanding, a good bean. The idea behind her is linked to the Qunari having metallic like skin... I wanted to make a golden one since they're usually grey in games. I'm not sure about the name Saara just because I remembered now Sera has a very similar sound. We shall see if I'm going to change it.

◆ Sulenan

Elf ◆ Male ◆ he/him Shadow dragons ◆ Two handed Warrior (Slayer)

I idealized him as a... mortal form Elgar'nan would use to mingle and learn the hell has happened while he was gone but he became a whole unique character. A Liberati of dalish origin, he's one of the angriest characters I have, hating humans for what they've done to his people and their rotten society, hating the chantry for its comforting lies, hating the elvhen gods because... well apparently they're evil now. In the end he's just very lost and heartbroken, desiring only for things to get better. Alas he's also practical and knows you gotta make your hands dirty if you wanna achieve anything. Headcanon wants Elgar'nan can control him through Vallaslin, I also fantasized about Sulenan sharing the same blood of his god. He feels comforted by Bellara's presence tho, his "Official" relationship it's going to be with her. For the headcanon chaotic one check LilRook above 👀

Qunari ◆ Agender nonbinary ◆ they/them in game but any pronoun works Mourn Watch ◆ Staff Mage (Deathcaller)

It's just... chaotic. Take the Dnd core rules and turn them into a person. They're unpredictable, at times taking a kind choice, while another time they will act in scary ways. It isn't like they don't like rules and push against them, for Anarca rules simply aren't part of their world. Beside their peculiar behavior, Anarca loves to experiment but mostly they want to have *fun*. You want to see the skeletons dance? You'll have that. Look wise people are always scared as they're extremely tall, most of their face half covered by hair with just their horns poking out.

Elf-blooded Human ◆ Female ◆ she/her Grey Wardens ◆ Shield Warrior (Champion)

Melancholic gal whom had to join the wardens in order to survive not so different from the Hero of Ferelden and also the token human (?) of this group. While she has a rooted sense of duty which made her a good warden, she still misses and fantasizes about the kind of life she would have gone through if she stayed among nobles, instead she had and still has to fight monsters and to come into terms with her Calling being closer than not. The idea was to have her romance Emmrich, letting her coming to term with the concept of death through him.

The cheerful and funny guy of the group but also the most clueless one. Honestly he doesn't know why he joined the Veilguard... he probably doesn't even know he's part of the Veilguard. Still, he isn't one to ask complex questions to himself or others, somehow he's able to work with whatever is at hand, navigating through every situation, hopefully bringing a smile on people's face in the meanwhile. He's goofy but still charismatic and enthusiastic, a disney princess in the body of a burly pirate drawf.

You provide details about the character (you, someone else, multiples). Stories can be OFC, Actual People, or Reader Insert.

You leave me alone for a few days and when I return, you’ll get a PDF file of your fic (including custom art) emailed right to you ready for gifting! (gift wrap not included)

What Kind of Story Can You Do?

Anything. No, wait. I’m afraid you don’t believe me. I mean… ANY T H I N G. You want hardcore smut that borders on problematic? I’m in. You want the fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed and would make Hallmark movies cringe? I got you. Angst? Dark stuff? General? Literally Anything you want. I only have one or two things I’m not comfortable with but that can all be discussed in private, and honestly, after almost 10 years doing this, no one’s ever come close to asking for them so you’re 1000% good to ask for whatever.

What’s the bottom line here?

Well, your story, which will be anywhere from 1,000 - 20,000 words depending on how wordy I get, will be a flat rate of $25. This includes my full attention to your story from start to finish, accompanying art, specific detail inclusion, and an emailed PDF file that you can print out or delete, or whatever you want. It’s yours.

I do not write for word counts, only the story. If your complete story can be told in 1k words, that’s great. If it takes another 40,000 and we end up with a novel, that’s great for you and I won’t charge you any more for it! I’m more worried about giving you the best story I can than worrying about word counts.

Commissions are open now until Christmas Eve Eve (Dec 23, 2023).

I will only take FIVE commissions at any time, so best to get to me first. First come, first serve, then I go down the line.
