William Etty, RA (British 1787-1849) "Study of a Male Nude"
Etty was an English artist best known for his history paintings containing nude figures. He was the first significant British painter of nudes and still lifes. Born in York, he left school at the age of 12 to become an apprentice printer in Hull. He completed his apprenticeship seven years later and moved to London, where in 1807 he joined the Royal Academy Schools. There he studied under Thomas Lawrence and trained by copying works by other artists. Etty earned respect at the Royal Academy of Arts for his ability to paint realistic flesh tones, but had little commercial or critical success in his first few years in London.

On March 4th 1756, the artist Sir Henry Raeburn was born in Edinburgh.
Henry Raeburn was born in Edinburgh, the son of a successful businessman who prepared yarn for the wool trade. However, both of Raeburn’s parents died in the early 1760s, leaving the young Raeburn in the care of his brother William, 12 years his senior. William took over the family yarn business and his younger brother was enrolled at George Heriot’s Hospital in 1765, then a school for the education of orphaned children of tradesmen.
During his schooling, Raeburn demonstrated particular aptitude for manual craftsmanship and he became apprenticed to a goldsmith, James Gilliland in 1772. At some point in his time in Gilliland’s jeweller’s workshop, Raeburn started painting portrait miniatures. Following his apprenticeship, Raeburn embarked upon a career as a portraitist while also attending drawing classes involving drawing from the Antique and from a draped model.
In the late 1770s, Raeburn married Ann Leslie (née Edgar), a wealthy widow who brought property and two daughters to the marriage. After the birth of two sons in 1781 and 1783 respectively, Raeburn began to plan for an extended stay in Rome, which he believed would provide artistic development and commercial success.
Arriving in Rome in late 1784, Raeburn made contact with fellow Scot James Byres, who provided guidance for Britons travelling on the Grand Tour. Byres also provided Raeburn with patrons and the chance to meet notable artists, such as Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787).
On his return to Scotland in 1786, Raeburn began producing impressive portraits for members of the Edinburgh elite, quickly establishing his reputation as the pre-eminent Scottish portraitist. During the 1790s, Raeburn developed his own unique style characterised by strong lighting from behind the sitter and dispersing across the canvas. He was in such high demand as a portraitist that he outgrew his studio in George Street, the fashionable and burgeoning central thoroughfare of Edinburgh’s New Town and, around 1800, moved around to a grand house nearby with reception areas, a framer’s workshop and a studio that took up the entire first floor. In these new premises Raeburn produced a series of full-length portraits of Highland chiefs and lairds in Scottish military dress which drew particular attention when exhibited in London.
From 1805, Raeburn was involved in a trading company called Henry Raeburn & Co., that operated from the port of Leith, trading mainly with London. He also became a director of the Caledonian Insurance Company in 1806, but his finances were far from secure. At the start of 1808, Raeburn was declared bankrupt. The cause of his financial ruin is not entirely known but by mid-1808 he had £36,000 in claims against him. Raeburn vowed to spend the rest of his life repaying these debts and untangling his financial difficulties, which were intertwined with family, as his son and step-son-in-law were partners in his trading firm.
In 1810, Raeburn sought to resolve his financial difficulties by moving to London. His fellow painter and countryman David Wilkie had relocated to the capital five years earlier and provided an introduction to artists such as Benjamin West, Thomas Stothard and John Flaxman. Unfortunately, Raeburn’s attempt to find riches in the London art scene did not work and he returned to Edinburgh later the same year.
Despite his lack of success in London, Raeburn was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1812 and became a full Member in 1815. An embarrassing miscommunication meant that the self-portrait Raeburn had gone to great lengths to prepare as his Diploma work, was refused by the Royal Academy due to their embargo on accepting self-portraits as Diploma works. Raeburn was sorely disappointed, and instead submitted a portrait of his grandson Henry Raeburn Inglis, Boy with a Rabbit. There is evidence in his correspondence that Raeburn felt frustrated at his isolation from the London art establishment, that he could not find success there as he did in his native Edinburgh.
After 1808, Raeburn’s paintings suffered from his prolific output and urgency to produce work to repay his creditors. Many portraits from this time appear hastily finished or lack depth. However, he also managed to produce some of his most sensitive and affecting paintings, and he was particularly adept at painting children.
In the final years of his life, Raeburn was lauded with honours and accolades, becoming a member of the American Academy of Fine Arts in 1819, a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1820, being knighted in 1822 and appointed as Painter and Limner to King George IV in 1823.
Raeburn died unexpectedly in July 1823, following an excursion to Fife where he probably contracted a fever. His posthumous reputation grew with a number of exhibitions in the 19th century, and his paintings were highly sought-after as part of the early 20th-century American craze for British art; Raeburn’s works feature in several public museums and private collectors in the US today.

The flowers in this basket include delicate porcelain replicas of carnations, ranunculus, tulips, lilies, cornflowers, convolvulus, orange blossoms, and lilies of the valley made by the Vincennes factory. Porcelain flowers were this factory’s first commercial success, and it employed forty-five women and girls to paint, assemble, and mount the flowers for use in baskets, vases, candelabra, chandeliers, and clock cases. Flowers were sometimes scented, adding to the luxurious experience of admiring a bouquet. Stems were usually made of painted metal, and leaves of either metal or silk. The basket was made by the Meissen factory and likely exported to the Parisian dealer Lazare Duvaux, who filled it with the flowers and mounted it in gilt-bronze. Duvaux sold several similar bouquets to his wealthy clients. This one probably cost around 800 livres, equivalent to eight- month’s salary for a highly paid porcelain painter. J. Pierpont Morgan bought this ensemble in 1900 for $500 and displayed it under a glass dome in his London townhouse. It entered the museum’s collection in 1917.

Adelaide Sophia Claxton (London, 1841 – 1927) was a Londoner illustrator, painter and inventor of the 19th century. She was one of the two daughters of British painter Marshall Claxton, both Adelaide and her sister Florence followed her father example becoming painters.
She studied at Cary’s School in the Bloomsbury area, there she began to focus on figure painting in watercolour.
Claxton’s work combines literary and fantasy elements, as ghosts and dreams, with scenes of domestic life. She began exhibiting in the Society of Women Artists in late 1850s and in 1896 she exhibited several times at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Hibernian Academy and Royal Society of British Artists, however she kept exhibiting too at the Society of Women Artists.
She worked selling satirical and comic illustrations to more than half a dozen periodicals, being one of the first female artists to get part of her living through commercial press like Bow Bells or The Illustrated London News, Judy or London Society. In Judy she was the chief of the illustrators, becoming one of the first British women to work regularly in the magazine market.
When she got married in 1874, she started to work less as illustrator, turning her interest to invention, in 1890 several patents were registered under her name, as curiosity, some of her inventions were the “Armpit-Crutch for Bed-Rests and Chair-Backs” or “Ear-caps for outstanding ears”.

Brett Whiteley (1939 – 1992) is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. He won the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes several times, and his artistic career was bolstered by his celebrity status in Australia and abroad.
Whiteley started working as a commercial artist in 1956, began life-drawing classes at the Julian Ashton Art School and joined John Santry’s sketch club where he became friends with Australian landscape painter Lloyd Rees, who was a strong influence. On weekends Whiteley painted around the towns of Bathurst, Hill End and Sofala, producing works such as Sofala 1958. In 1959 he was awarded the Italian Government Travelling Art Scholarship, which was judged by Australian artist Russell Drysdale at the Art Gallery of NSW. Whiteley remained in Europe for the next decade, exhibiting his work regularly in group exhibitions in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin, establishing an international reputation. He also lived in the USA, staying at New York’s Chelsea Hotel where he socialized with celebrities including musicians Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan.
Returning to Sydney in 1969, Whiteley moved to Lavender Bay and became involved in the Yellow House artists’ collective in Kings Cross. His work became highly collectable; in particular his Matisse influenced large-scale interiors and landscapes. In 1976 he won both the Archibald Prize for portraiture and the Sulman Prize for genre painting. The following year, he was awarded the Wynne Prize for landscape. He won all three prizes in 1978 (the first artist to do so) and the Wynne a third time in 1984. In 1991 he was awarded an Order of Australia.

On July 24, 1860 was born in the town of Ivancice, Moravia (today's region of Czech Republic), Alphonse Mucha, a Moravian painter, illustrator and graphic artist

Art Nouveau, 1899, Alfons Mucha - 'La Primevere' ('The Primrose', left) and 'La Plume' ('The Feather', right) - These symbolic figures, complete with Mucha's customary aureoles around their heads and filigree diadems in their hair, comprise one of his best decorative panel sets.

👉 The master of the Art Nouveau movement, Alphonse Mucha created what we now consider to be the Art Nouveau style.
Borne out of a period where mass-produced good were becoming increasingly common but were also increasingly ugly, Mucha's approach made beautiful art images available cheaply.
This was intended to break down the invisible lines between the elite and the public and art and commerce. Much of Mucha's work, including this piece, was used commercially to advertise everything from cigarette papers to biscuits to liquor bottles.
His intricate decorations blended in with his drawings to create something stylishly unique.
This image was created in 1899 as part of a set of two lithographic panels eventually called 'Primrose and Feather.' The title harks back to a story written by the Brothers Grimm in 1807.
In the story the eponymous two sisters suffer the loss of their father and both are left grieving. One of the two- Feather- rejects numerous suitors and then runs away to the forest to forget her troubles.
She gets lost there, then encounters a sorcerer who turns her into a white swan.
After time has passed her sister Primrose goes to save her from this plight, eventually using a net to capture the sorcerer disguised as a black swan and thus freeing her sibling from her plight.
Mucha's 'Feather' reflects this story, with the still whiteness of the female depicted creating a distant sensuality, just as the story tells of a distant and unobtainable woman.
The woman's bouquet of foliage and a feather is another clue to her story, although told in a typical Mucha style. This image was also used in posters advertising the J Royer printing company -
