The Curse
You abandoned me inside a well filled with lonely
The depths of which I struggled to fathom
I thought of you not thinking of me
Never thinking of me
And I foundered
I was chained to a myriad of haunted memories
The way you made me feel that I was odd and unloveable
The way you raged at my need and starved me of affection.
In that moment the plural pain that you all inflicted became one devil
A single obstacle I needed to overcome.
You imagined I’d be too defeated to climb out
To scale the dark walls
Slippery with moss
Scaly with grime
Too intimidated by the darkness of rejection
The emptiness of unrequited love
But I wove the rags on which I slept into braided rope
And I climbed my way to freedom
Exchanging the skin on my hands for each inch of progress
No light to guide me but the faintest glow of hope
It would soon evolve into certainty that I deserved better
Years later I sit in a crumbling cottage
While you preside over a palace
Thinking yourself large
Making others feel small
Riding a wave of avoidant confidence that never hears its own echo
Arrogance that doesn’t see the wrecks it leaves behind
I keep the journal entries from those days
And the little trinkets you gave me
Right there on my bookshelf with my prized possessions
They ward against the charisma that once seduced me
The unkindness that produced the tears with which you filled your moat
These totems take me back to the moment I escaped
The moment I finally grasped the earth around the well
Cold blades of grass sliding through my shredded fingers like cold spaghetti
Sweat and blood comingling on my tear stained face
While the stars greeted me with open arms
And the gods lit the path to a new world
I began a new life
Reborn
Your names are tattooed on my chest
But I don’t feel the sting of them like I used to
I sleep in a lumpy bed with a broken frame
Propped up with the books I wrote about your crimes against me
This bed is warmer and softer than your thousand count sheets
The sleep finds me sweeter and deeper than yours
Knowing I loved and did not lie
Knowing I could never have loved you correctly, only honestly and unselfishly
As I always did
Knowing that the deepest, most precious love I have ever given lives on inside me
And not in the hands of those l gifted it to
You do not remember me
It is not just the mark of sinful pride
But the majestic nature of karma
For you will never learn the lesson that might have saved you
The same one that saved me
The lesson that we are all consigned to deliver heartbreak at some point in our lives But we need not deliver it without the seriousness it deserves
We need not hurl it across battlefields
Nor tiptoe around
Secretly silently selfishly planting in our loved ones gardens
Destined to become a plague upon the people we vowed to protect
But I am not merely your wounds and your lessons
I am frilly white socks
And sandwich triangles
The crisp sound of a page turning
And the laughter that collects like a bubble in my throat
I am all the pieces of happiness I collected for you recycled into new joys;
The handcrafted compliments on a silver platter
The buffet of ego-stroking sentiments to which you always returned
The commiserations and celebrations of someone who truly adored you
The things you enjoyed for a moment but not a lifetime
The repackaged treasures you left on my doorstep
Return to sender
And oh how grateful I am that you did!
No, I am not the school gate latching
The empty seats at the dinner table
The lazy the weak the slovenly
You deemed me to be
I am not the excuse to be cruel
I am not a sponge
Soaking up your vitriol
Anymore
I am the ocean pulling away from the shore
A sunflower growing up up up
And away from the cold, unyielding mud of the earth
I am the sherbet the gold rush the waterfall
I am soft and bold and irreplaceable
I am not the in between moments I cannot fill
The cratered skin and flares of white hot rage
The shutting down of my system in a revolt against the senses
I am the persistence of health within illness
Of happiness within the greatest sadness I’ve ever felt
I am a person who resigned herself to dropping burdens and playing dead until the threat had passed
I am the woman who found the strength to continue through hardest winters and soul crushing droughts
Over and over and over and
I am the forgiving and the faithful
The parishioner on her knees
Making oaths to be better
To be present
I am keeping them
I am the reimagining of a classic childhood tale
Bursting from the pages
I am becoming and becoming and becoming
Real
Realer than the naïveté and euphoria of my dreams with you
Realer than the person I dreamed of becoming
I am a changing wallpaper
A glow in the dark puzzle
A paint by numbers
Dot to dot
Slow reveal
I am for the patient
And the kind
I am a mile wide rainbow stretching over the enchanted woods
A pot of good for those who wait
For who study me as I study them
So that we may become experts on each other
In a world where feeling known is rare.
I am a midnight picnic beneath the stars
The sound that soft rain makes on a canvas tent
I am a strange and stubborn endurance
Who will love you always
In ways you do not return
I am the wisdom and the kindness that this makes me
I am a student of love and loss
And you were my teachers
I keep the cruel things you said to me in ancient jars coated in dust
Spelled close with white magic
I bring them out every full moon
To remember the spell you cast
The curse you enacted on my youth
And the day I finally broke it
A young witch finding her power
In the hands of those who took it
Attempting to vanquish her
Unaware that the attempt would only embolden her
You are my compass
You are the threads of wisdom woven through my self esteem
You are the waves of the ocean carrying me to better things
I will always miss the way we ran with hearts and legs pumping
Laughing as hard as our straining bodies would let us
I’m never too far from the crinkle of fish and chip wrap
Yet always too far from the way it made ne feel
I will always miss the wilderness you planted inside me
And will forever mourn the day it began
The overgrowth
The misuse and neglect
Kindling
One day we were holding hands on a playground
The next it was aflame
I never breathed as shallowly as I did then
In the aftermath of you leaving
A burning utopia
A shattered snow globe
Strands of pink feather boas and the leaves of our once evergreen tree
Littering the blackened landscape
A hopeless wildfire
Where once grew roses and lillies and the strands of a trust I never thought would be broken
Yet I watched as it collapsed with the heat of the fire
Never to be rebuilt
I carry these little reminders of how tenderly I loved
And how bravely I lost
Reminders of the way that these ships sail,
Into that long dark night
Carrying the cargo you once shared
Never to appear upon the horizon again
I peer out the window of my cottage to see the clouds swirling
The purplish black of the bruises you continue to leave on this world
Thunder rumbling as you tread on hands and hearts
A careless giant
A smiling assassin
But I am safe here on the outskirts of the kingdom you took
I am happy here in a valley of new friends and family
The likes of which I found in the ashes of a kingdom just like yours
I tended to them as they tended to me
I made bandages from the letters I wrote you
Elixirs from the tears I shed in your name
We were victims of different plagues united together in healing
And we have built a life of careful words and gentle hope
I nurture these people as I was not nurtured
I love them as I hope to be loved
Here roses and lillies and evergreen trees bloom once more
The sounds of crackling fire and bubbling brooks reign supreme
With the smell of barbecues and salt water on the breeze
And the taste of caramel in my mouth
I am whole
There is music by the river in the evenings When the sun hangs low and heavy in the sky
Full and glowing as the faces of those around me
Whose souls shine through like silken gold
Acoustic guitar and a soft summer rainshower sing to my once beleaguered senses
I am soothed by the twinkling of the same stars I used to looked up to and pray to
I count every smiling face and every blade of grass and every word I write in this poem
I tally them in a notebook titled blessings
And read them like a lullaby just before bed
They are the magic with which I created this hidden valley
And the deep joy with which I expelled you all from my heart
They are the karma I earned while I was making you feel special
And the strength I found when you cursed me to believe that I was nothing
I am not nothing
I am the first blessing and the sixth and the one thousandth
I am not nothing
I am free

Fashion Friday: For the Love of a Dog
This is my fourth posting on fashion finds in the UWM Special Collections, this time seeking the influence of Greek history and costume on my art and design practice.
The snail-like tendrils of the Greek minor goddess Circe dominate my first image, and it is no mistake that the illustrator, English artist Maxwell Armfield, has depicted them as a curling ruddy gold, since these features became a metaphor of the prized Golden Fleece symbolizing an age of handiwork and fundamental craftsmanship in the eyes of the author, William Morris, in Special Collections’ 1917 copy of The Life and Death of Jason, a Metrical Romance.
This Victorian poem of Jason and the Argonauts, originally published in 1871, has taken extensive liberty with original Greek mythology, an Arts and Crafts manifesto to the power of natural dyes and the mark of the human hand. Further appreciation for such work is seen in Special Collections' 1969 Limited Edition Club copy of Xenophon's Anabasis, with graphic woodcuts by Greek artist Anastasios Tassos, whose angular and exaggerated features translate to the disciplined and dire plight of the brave Greek soldiers.
And while Xenophon was a wartime mercenary, his Greek compatriot, Aristophanes, was the playwright of satiric comedy. Both ancient men followed the teachings of Socrates, one as protege, the other as ridiculer. The Old Comedy style of the latter was steeped in satire and accompanied with phantastic costumes with overstuffed genitals, giving way to distorted theatrical gestures.
The amphora or two-handled Greek pottery herein depicts such costuming in the human-horse-knights, a classic example of the clay vase serving as documentation of ancient lifestyles. While these vessels were widely used for foodstuffs, wine, and wealthy bragging rights, they also served to house the dead. A recent Mykonos excavation in 1961 revealed such pithoi where the jars were recycled for burials, comingling families, and in one case a dog.
My first fashion plate is titled "Athenian Jewels" after the marquis jewel-like eyes so prominent in Greek art; I translate these to the emerald-cut design in the first plate. Can you find the inspiration of waves and cats in the other two?
Here is a listing of sources for my designs and featured plates from both Special Collections and the library’s general collection, which I have augmented with color and outline to emphasize the details of my inspiration:
1 & 10.) Greek characters in William Morris' The Life and Death of Jason, a Metrical Romance, originally published in 1871 and later published in New York, by Dodd, Mead and Company, 1917.
2 & 3.) My interpretations and contemporary designs of the ATHENIAN JEWELS and GREEK WAVES dress inspired by A. Tassos woodcuts in The Anabasis, printed in Athens by Aspioti-Elka Graphic Arts Inc. for the Limited Editions Club (LEC) of New York in 1969.
4.) My interpretation and contemporary designs of the CAT COMEDY dress inspired by Laura M. Stone’s dissertation Costume in Aristophanic Comedy, published in New York by Arno Press, 1977.
5.) "Greek Ionic” plate from Costumes of the World, 100 Hand Colored Plates from Ancient Egypt to the Gay Nineties, published by the Works Progress Administration, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania unit, ca. 1940.
6.) Warrior woodcuts by A. Tassos in the LEC Anabasis.
7.) Opposing Greek archers in (left) Costume in Aristophanic Comedy and, (right) The Anabasis.
8.) Amphora painting of actors of Greek comedy from Costume in Aristophanic Comedy.
9.) Plate 23, "Vasentypen", in The Coloured Ornament of All Historical Styles published in Leipzig by Baumgärtner in 1915.

A Brief History Of Garbage In Cincinnati: From Porkopolis To Mount Rumpke
In the beginning, Cincinnati had no garbage. Really.
The Porkopolis hogs took care of pretty much everything. The system was neat and efficient and, to a particular English visitor, grotesquely horrifying. In her 1832 screed, “Domestic Manners of the Americans,” the formidable Fanny Trollope relates her dismay, on taking rooms in Cincinnati, to discover no rubbish cart, “no pump, no cistern, no drain of any kind,” to dispose of garbage. Her landlord informed her that Cincinnatians threw everything in the middle of the street for porcine consumption. With a shudder, she agreed the system worked:
“In truth, the pigs are constantly seen doing Herculean service in this way through every quarter of the city ; and though it is not very agreeable to live surrounded by herds of these unsavoury animals, it is well they are so numerous, and so active in their capacity of scavengers, for without them the streets would soon be choked up with all sorts of substances in every stage of decomposition.”
The Civil War was imminent before Cincinnati surrendered to the idea that maybe having droves of hogs fulfilling municipal sanitary functions might be somewhat less than optimal. A city report of 1862 records the decision to organize rubbish removal:
“About two years since, the City Council were seriously exorcised about the system then used in cleaning streets, and they passed an ordinance compelling the occupants of houses to place their ashes and garbage in separate vessels, so that, during the summer months especially, they could be frequently removed.”
Notice the distinction between ashes and garbage. In 1862, “garbage” was largely organic food waste, while “ashes” referred to mineral refuse. Ashes were consigned to two destinations – dumped in the Ohio River, or dumped in valleys and gullies around the city.
Organic matter, whether vegetable (what we might call “compost”) or animal, what our ancestors called “offal,” was commercially valuable. People bid to pay Cincinnati to haul away garbage. Thar’s gold in them thar garbage cans! Henry & Kate Ford, in their 1881 history of Cincinnati, report that the winning 1866 bidder to head the Cincinnati Street Cleaning Department had to pay the city for the privilege:
“Colonel A. M. Robinson was appointed superintendent of streets, by whom a contract was made with George Thompson, by which he paid three thousand dollars a year into the city treasury, in consideration for the house offal and animal garbage he was to collect from the streets.”
Within 20 years, a Cincinnati guide book boasted about the profitable qualities of Queen City garbage:
“The Cincinnati Fertilizer Company has its sheds on the Ohio and Mississippi and Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Chicago Railroads, six miles west of the city, on the river-bank. By a contract with the city this company gathers and consumes all the garbage, offal, and dead animals found within the city limits. These are manufactured into a fertilizer, soap-grease, bone-dust, etc., and shipped to the South, East, and to Europe. The enterprise is quite profitable, both to the city and the Fertilizer Company.”
The problem, as always, was the obstreperous householder who could not comprehend the instructions to separate ash from garbage. Comingled refuse clogged the fertilizer factory and had to be dumped somewhere – usually in any convenient valley or gully, where it stank bodaciously. The 1916 “Citizen’s Book” chastised those who mixed refuse:
“By the selection of galvanized iron receptacles, reasonably uniform in size and appearance, and with water-tight and dogproof lids, citizens can add materially to the efficiency of this work in preventing unhealthful conditions. Also, contrary to ordinance, many people mix ashes with the garbage, with the result that the mixture is rejected by the contractor, and it is hauled to dumps by the city, thereby creating a local nuisance.”
Where were these city dumps? Due to Cincinnati’s hilly terrain, they were pretty much everywhere. Not only did Cincinnati’s random dumps stink, they regularly caught on fire. Here is the 1898 city report:
“Owing to the topography of the city, it has been found expedient, and in many instances wise, for the city to use some of the low grounds and old ravines for dumping ashes, cinders, and such refuse. The careless mixture of garbage and various animal and vegetable debris, not suitable for these dumps, has led to their abuse. As a result, the dumps, in some instances, are a very great annoyance. The dreadful odors arising from them are not only destructive of comfort, but deleterious to the health of persons living near them or to those compelled to pass them.”
Remember, Cincinnati labored until the 1920s under the machine rule of Boss Cox for whom garbage collection became a political plum bestowed upon the highest bidder. Finally, under Charter Government, Cincinnati established a city-wide network of incinerators. If it burned, it went into the incinerator. If it didn’t burn it went into the Gest Street Dump next to the Millcreek. The incinerator system survived for almost 50 years.
Cincinnati wasn’t the only garbage producer in the area. Cheviot had its own dump out on South Road. Dumps in West Chester, Loveland, Arlington Heights, St. Bernard and Sharonville swallowed untold tons of refuse.
Finally, every municipality for miles around signed contracts with a Carthage pig farmer named Bill “Sweet William” Rumpke. Garbage was gold to Bill Rumpke. He earned as much as $20,000 a month in the 1950s to haul garbage to his pig farm, where 600 hogs ate what they could and the rest got sold for scrap. Cincinnati garbage had come full circle, back to the pigs.
Eventually pushed outside the city limits by a horde of NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) activists, Rumpke (and his pigs) ended up in Colerain Township, creating the foundations for Mount Rumpke – now the tallest point in Hamilton County.
In the 1970s, environmental regulations caught up with Cincinnati’s incinerator system. All of them were shut down, and all of Cincinnati’s garbage, like all of our municipal neighbors, ended up in Bill Rumpke’s Colerain landfill.
Now, it’s not ashes and offal that get separated, but common trash from recyclables.

THE DATA
The data for our group sculpture was Waste collected per month which came from City of Melbourne’s Open Data project. @eastaughdatavisualisation undertook the task of putting this data through Excel, sorting it into seasons and he even made it colour-coded! All of which was essential for us to interpret it and create the final sculpture.
Our project visualizes nine different categories of waste through a layered, flower-like sculpture, the categories of waste are:
Residential
Public Litter
Dumped Rubbish
Street Sweepings
Mattresses
Comingled Recycling
Cardboard
Hardwaste
Green Waste

Keys to workplace recycling success
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4c395dbd246681ad42951974e5eea1ca/078d1ea6890eaab3-f2/s540x810/dcde3f17cee0883f4bc51ff4368408df7554d193.jpg)
“Think outside the trash… RECYCLE!”
The amount of waste we produce is growing day by day, and our offices play a large part in it!
On an average, the office worker creates 4.40 pounds of waste each day. Coffee cups, Styrofoam, paper products, office equipments and plastics are among the commonly used office items all of which are sent directly to the landfills. The good news is that your company can probably recycle more than you think. It is estimated that 70% of a business’ landfill waste can be recycled, that can help in restoring the environment through implementation of Zero-Waste Model!
And, moving your organization closer to zero-waste can result in cost savings, all while making a positive environmental and social impact! The goal of zero-waste is to reduce overall waste generation and to divert materials whenever possible. The 5 R’s of Zero-Waste are as follows:
Refuse what you do not need.
Reduce what you do need; reconsider just how much stuff you actually need.
Reuse by repurposing stuff, or by using reusable objects like metal straws.
Recycle what you cannot refuse, reduce or reuse.
Rot (compost) the rest
Now you must be thinking is Workplace Recycling a Success? – A Recycling Program can always make it possible:
Colour coding: Maintain uniformity in the colour of your recycling containers i.e. blue or green, which is universally recognized for recycling.
Signage: Place proper signage with clear messages on all containers for both landfill and recyclables.
Reminders: Constant reminders about proper recycling are a must.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/30ca5beb66e9f5f4a5be2238869d0005/078d1ea6890eaab3-10/s540x810/0ecc309c2b31c8ca7335ca2e230168c81eca677d.jpg)
Companies everywhere are ramping up efforts to go green, but sustainability starts with your employees. By implementing all of these suggestions, you could see better results in your office.
If any further help is required in improving recycling at your workplace, we Y.E.S Full Circle are here to help you manage your office waste more effectively. Our End Waste Now Solution for integrated Waste Management approach makes recycling simple and efficient.
Our aim is to help organisation in achieving the zero waste, we plan to augment the services with the facility of processing the comingled waste through various methods instead of dumping it into the ground. Since the material collected will be processed and recycled back, creating a circular economy loop.
So, let’s not waste the waste in haste and initiate the process to move in a circular system boosting the economic growth and bringing about sustainability which can further enhance company’s brand value.

Work together to lobby for product stewardship for possible priority products such as, but not limited to e-waste, tyres and plastic bags.
Envirowaste
We all want our future generations to enjoy this incredibly beautiful country. So we need to work together to protect and preserve the one environment we all share, and this is at the very heart of what we do.
A few examples of our innovative, first-in-New Zealand initiatives include:
1989: Landfill Gas-to-Electricity – we pioneered the process in NZ of converting landfill methane gas into electricity. Our Hampton Downs Landfill has 7 MW of generation installed, which is capable of supplying the electricity needs of approximately 5,600 households.
2006: Three stream Council kerbside collection - we implemented the first fully integrated ‘three stream’ kerbside collection system. This included the collection and processing of fully comingled recycling, mixed green waste and food waste.
2006: Composting - we installed the first state-of-the-art Gore Cover composting plant in Australasia. Composting has the potential to substantially reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill.
2009: Glass recycling - we developed a method to colour sort glass recycling and were the first in Australasia to use this technology. This method is now recognised as best practice for optimising the successful recovery of glass for recycling in NZ.
2016: We were the first in NZ to treat landfill leachate via reverse osmosis. At our Hampton Downs Landfill, the reverse osmosis leachate treatment plant removes contaminants and recovers up to 300,000 litres per day of high quality purity water fit for reuse or direct discharge back into the environment.
Our partnerships with our customers are an integral part of our DNA. It’s by working closely with our customers that we are able to find the most cost-effective, sustainable waste solutions – solutions that will maximise recycling and resource recovery, so that minimal waste goes to landfill. And by helping our customers to improve their environmental performance, we also help them to make significant cost savings through a reduction in unnecessary spend on waste!

Art Brings the Invisible to Life, 1 August 2017
There are 20,000 catadores in Brazil. They collect recyclable materials from comingled trash on the streets, households in their territory, and any other sources from which they can recover materials that would otherwise fill up landfills. Only 3% of Brazil’s waste is recycled, and 90% of the recycled waste is collected by the catadores and transported to the resellers in carracos (or carts) that they pull around the cities on foot. This is their profession and how they provide for themselves and their families.
Before Pimp My Carroca was established 5 years ago, the catadores were ridiculed and frowned upon for digging in the trash and walking their bulky and heavy carts through the streets, just like the canners in NYC. Activist artist Mundano came up with the idea to brighten their carts and their profiles by painting the carts with bold-colored, graffiti-style art and advocating for the contributions their hard work contributes to environmental and economic sustainability.
Pimp My Carroca shares the details of its model with cities around the world, which have also adopted the program and increased the prominence and effectiveness of these street recyclers. And they are rolling out an app called Cataki so homeowners can find catadores when they have recyclables to pick up.
We had a great time with Mundano learning spray painting techniques and creating our own family mural on a wall in the outdoor space of his office. We also took a tour around the Beco do Batman area in the Vila Madalena neighborhood of São Paulo to see the variety of activist street art in alleys that turn to rivers in the rainy season.
Several hundred artists designed and created mini carracos to sell as a fundraiser for Pimp My Carroca. We chose the feminist one (surprised?) that you can see in my previous post, which also includes other photos of some carts, catadores and street art of Beco do Batman.
What a privilege to spend the day with Mundano and Pimp My Carroca.
This subtitled video is a great overview of their work and a nice way to practice your Portuguese. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7sMinodMML8

There is a great deal of material which cannot go to landfills or standard municipal waste to energy plants because they require much higher temperatures and more time to destroy pathogens which may have contaminated the materials. Additionally, the heroic medical and healthcare staff who are at the front lines to contain the COVID-19 pandemic should be shielded from exposure to infectious healthcare waste through proper medical waste systems. Waste Solutions Florida However, many Asian developing countries lack proper facilities and regulations for the handling and disposal of medical and hazardous waste. Hazardous waste is often openly burned, comingled with municipal solid waste, illegally recycled and resold, posing significant threat to both the health of the handler and the environment. When medical waste is treated, it is often in old and inadequate facilities with limited capacity and safeguards. Such outdated facilities should be modernized to avoid the emission of toxic gases and generate clean energy from waste. Most developing countries in Asia do not have the capacity to modernize their systems by rolling out mobile medical waste treatment.
