hi! i'm currently taking a stab at a short comic for the first time and i was wondering — if you're willing to share — what goes into the “base” of your projects? your creative notes have been a HUGE help in pinpointing things i might want to outline in my own work before i actually start making the project, but i'm still incredibly curious about the initial work and planning that goes into the making of yours. love your art!
hello anon! first of all, congratulations on starting on a comic! I hope you find it very fulfilling, and a great learning experience. To answer this ask, I'm going to use bite of winter as the main example for my work process.
Text: More often than not, I start with the entire textual part of the comic finalised. This is kind of obvious, considering my comics are entirely built around it serving as a sort of narration substitute, but it stays true for comics that are just dialogue as well. Speech bubbles will always take up more space than you think. It's good to have all the dialogue finalised before you start so you can accommodate them in the thumbnailing process. --
Thumbnails: I make thumbnails for all my comics so that I can, at a glance, see if things are cohesive. I'll often spend a lot of time at this stage, since it's also the part where I wrack my brain for smart things I can do compositionally (sometimes I go into comics knowing what sort of smart things I want to do e.g the comparison between the open grave + the empty bed was the entire inspiration behind making shallow grave). Thumbnails are always quick and dirty for me. I know my own brain, so I always just do the bare minimum and know I'll be able to interpret it later. Here are the thumbnails I made for bite of winter.
note: the bright blue border on all the 'pages' is just to indicated where i should try to keep my panels.
it's extremely shitty but it's decipherable to me, and the whole point of thumbnail is that you're hopefully saving yourself time in the future by getting all this planning out now. --
3. Colour: Colour blocks are how I plan out how a comic's colour scheme should look as a cohesive package. Although I didn't used to do this for comics, I do it now ever since I wasted around 8 hours on patchwork canary just fiddling with the colours (ugh). I'll usually go into a project knowing what kind of tone I want to convey with it, which gives me a launchpad for what kind of colour scheme I'd like. For instance, RED, one of my best comics, only uses three colours (black, white and red) and that limited colour palette enhances the message behind it. I think it wouldn't be nearly as impactful if it was all standardly coloured - having that contrast pushes Red's impact as a significant character in the narrative by making her pop on the page.
In a similar vein, almost all of the sunset's emotional complexity gets expressed through its colour palette of red, blue and yellow.
Even though it might be more conventionally coloured with shading and whatnot, the choices behind making certain scenes darker/lighter and etc really sells the story more in my opinion.
These are the colour thumbnails I made for bite of winter. It's incredibly rough, but at a glance you can tell the comic doesn't have any particular page that is jarring or pulls you out of it.
As one more note: I'd advise doing all thumbnailing/colour-blocking at a much smaller size than the actual page is going to be. It keeps you from obsessing over fine details, and encourages you to just block in shapes and colours really quickly.
--
that's all from me for now. I hope this helped, and I wish you luck on your project. Pace yourself! Comics are more work than people ever say they are, and it's good to just take your time and enjoy the process.

It's insane how someone can be so tired after a relaxing 4-day weekend solely because they had a stress episode at the end of the final day.
I neglected doing art this weekend because I dunno, mental illness. I wanna draw a small Discord expression sheet/exploration. I wanna draw more Phoenix Wright. I think AU Braeburn should be a pretty-boy because if I'm drawing masc women, I better draw femme men too. I started a storyboarding job for a short film production. I have so much Rarijack art to do. They need to do the Lindy Hop. Rarity needs to wear a qipao dress. I've been watching Bluey too. I wanna do a CMC comic about death. Those are my thoughts.

Okay so bear with me because while I’m going to bring in something outside to discuss the latest Doctor Who episode, I still think it’s kinda interesting.
Overall, the plot of Dot and Bubble is about how racism, white supremacy, and echo chambers basically rot the brain, and this is really a drop in the bucket when it comes to discussing that but the name Lindy really stuck out to me from the beginning.
So I’ve been reading the Flash comic books since like March and the specific version of the Flash I’m reading is Wally West. The reason that this is important that Wally has an Asian girlfriend (later wife), a reporter named Linda Park. Now Linda is an all around badass and I love her but that’s not really all that relevant, what is relevant here is her name. Linda and Lindy are very similar, but while Lindy is used as typically as a nickname for Linda it’s not what Linda Park uses.
Linda’s friend calls her “Linny” in The Flash (1987) #123 which is very obviously not Lindy. Something about Linda’s background that is important is that Linda has suffered workplace discrimination because she’s Korean. She was told to make herself look more appealing to a white audience because she was previously accused of being sympathetic to Koreans and not being objective in her work. So Linda being an Asian woman is very important to her story and her character. This seems rambly but we will get there.
In the comics there is an arc where Wally ends up moving to California because he has been kicked out of his home of Keystone City because he’s being accused of causing too much damage to the city and ruining it. He moves to a stereotypical California beach town and is offered a movie to be made about him.
And in the script for the hypothetical movie they try to rename Linda to yep, you got it, Lindy.
To which the woman in the panel working for Wally is like “it sounded blonder” which is just barely disguised code for whiter. And of course it’s not even a nickname Linda uses. She has found a nickname of her own that isn’t stereotypically associated with blondes. But In order to make Wally more palatable they had to do their best to erase his interracial relationship. They co-opted Wally and Linda’s story, coincidentally or not to how Lindy Pepper-Bean stole the story of Ricky September.
So when I saw the main character of the episode was named Lindy and she was blonde at first I thought “oh wow this is like in that issue of the Flash!” And now, well Lindy is a blonde lady.
When the episode was airing I had that bit of racial discrimination I had already read in my mind so when the episode was revealed to be about racism it clicked into place with me.
It’s interesting how the names in Dot and Bubble actually do build into the world building. While I’m sure nobody else made this connection lol I thought it was interesting.
TLDR: I have wallylinda brainrot so bad that when I saw Lindy I couldn’t stop thinking about that time someone tried to turn Linda Park white by renaming her to Lindy.

LAST TIME ON RANGER ACADEMY:
Dark Specter has begun to infect Ranger Academy, and Sage and Tula tapped into the age-old Red/Green shipping to save the day! Unfortunately Ranger Academy is full of fucking narcs and expelled Tula for being cool and wanting justice for her dead sister or whatever. In general the Headmaster might be cool with children dying? Yeah, Sage, I think we gotta take your polycule and go.
It's RANGER ACADEMY #9!
= "what are you?" "an idiot sandwich" but like, in a gay best friends way
= they are so dear to me
= "his friend" girl I think your dad is gay
= I know the whole plot with the Green campus and the question of "hey, is being Green bad?" is a big source of contention in the fandom, and I've brought up similar criticisms, but the whole thing kind of makes more sense if you look at it outside of the context of the PR universe and more in terms of it being some kind of LGBTQA+ allegory. Like it was kind of hinted at before, and I don't know if it's still 100% intentional considering this book is full of legit LGBTQA representation that isn't treated like a big deal in-universe, but panels like this feel especially blatant with that kind of message
= a lot of children swearing in this issue
= this is sooooooooo cute but also my old post about how her Ranger team is going to end up being her friends with her dad filling the Red spot is going to come true isn't it
= so some more answers! The infected friend was Zilan. We don't have a legit design for him yet (he's either covered up or just shown with no detail) but he IS confirmed to have hair, so probably not an Eltarian despite the Z-name. Thank god, I was getting Eltarian War flashbacks
= the last time someone I cared about tried to handle things alone, he broke the multiverse with an Egg and caused three women to get wiped from existence and went on to wear combat boots over his Ranger boots. wait, wrong comic
= you know I don't mind stuff like "oh my Grid" and "thank the Grid" because it's pretty cute and makes sense in-universe the same way that stuff like "StarClan help me" and "trust the Force" does but idk. It always just throws me because of how secular the school is for them to suddenly use phrasing that implies religious framing. Mathis Has Become Catholic
= If you wonder why I keep complaining about the overuse of romance in Darkest Hour, stuff like this is why. We don't know if Mathis and Tula is romantic - but what's important is that you can really feel how powerful their bond is that they could be believably romantic if the comic chooses to go that route. Darkest Hour seemed to rely on just the fact that they have a romance to do the heavy lifting for actually proving how close they are
= heyyyy the debut of Theo and Maev's Ranger forms (yeah the Ranger Academy suits are just recolors, but shush, it's still cool) and Ranger weapons! Maev's pretty much got Power Daggers like MMPR Yellow but Theo has a spear that shoots fire, so a W for Black Rangers here
= Lindy if you're coming on this adventure we are going to get you a Ranger suit by god
= HOT DAD NOOOOOOOO

50% of all revenue for my store, starting now, will be donated to CareforGaza and the PCRF.
[ PURCHASE MY ANTHOLOGIES HERE ]
hi there! i'm lindi. you may have seen some of my comics floating around in the past year or so.
if you’ve ever liked my stories and wanted to purchase a copy of one of my anthologies, I invite you to do so now. This policy will be in place indefinitely, and the list of charities/organisations may be subject to change depending on their effectiveness. Currently, the focus is on providing aid and food to the innocent Palestinians in Gaza, but in the future I hope to increase the scope to tangibly support the queer community and help fund independent artists in Australia.
below, I'll list a few resources for people who'd like to directly donate at the source:
credible organisations that are doing work on the ground in Palestine:
Care for Gaza:non-profit charity that distributes money, food and other resources directly to families in Gaza. They maintain a regular presence on Twitter and Instagram. You can donate to them via Paypal here.
PCRF / Palestine Children's Relief Fund: non-profit organisation that distributes essential food and resources to families in Gaza. Most recently, they delivered 30 tons of vital medicine, and 82,000 pounds of flour.
Medical Aid For Palestinians: deploys medical teams to treat Palestinians suffering under Israel's malicious bombardments.
help people leave palestine (donate what you can)
Save Sanaa and her Family (Gofundme)
Save Amjad Saher and his family (Gofundme)
Help a family of 13 escape Gaza (Gofundme)
Help a Palestinian children's book illustrator save her family of 12 (Gofundme)
#disclaimer: I do want to say that I'm also regularly donating a significant portion of my own personal funds and have been for a while#however I think these additional donations will make all the difference.#just donating alone isnt gonna stop the genocide happening in gaza but im trying to put my money where my mouth is#thank you all in advance for your generosity#i appreciate the audience ive cultivated here immensely#and if nothing else i hope this weeds out the trash that mightve lingered here. somehow.#dont dare try separate the art from the artist with me.#everything ive ever made and will ever make stands with palestine from now until it sees its liberation#free palestine#palestine

Inspiration
If it wasn’t clear, my fanfic has taken inspiration from across the Avatar universe.
It started as a Makorra story. I wasn’t happy that Korra went off into the sunset with Asami. It just seemed so …random. Korra’s bi—fine. But Asami being bi felt like it came out of nowhere. After Turf Wars, I started writing what, at the time, I thought was a better ending for Mako. I had my fun, then it dropped from my purview. It was for my own silly amusement after all.
Then, I found the Legend of Genji fan project (a group I only wish I could replicate). It’s a shame the comic was never finished but kudos to those that went on to bigger and better things. Anyway, it did give me some additional insight for Mako. I liked that they had him married to his job, but I didn’t like that it had cost him his family. It would have been the third relationships he failed at. I wanted him to have that same drive with a better outcome. I decided to shift away from the whole Makkora angle and make it more canon. Thus, Shizuku was born.
I rewrote my entire story. The Kyoshi novels continued to expand on half-spirits which are a large part of my canon, and here I am so many years later with literally hundreds of thousands of words.
Inspiration strikes.
I found this image and instantly wanted to write about it.
What is it?
Ummm…A berry snapper.
Oh that’s great! Why is it called a berry snapper?
Because, like most reptiles, it’s an ambush predator.
Berries don’t move.
…..
They could…
They really couldn’t.
Fine! It’s omnivorous. It eats berries and bugs! Farmers like them because they eat the destructive insects. Happy?
I suppose. You’re talking to yourself after all.
I know that!
So, what started as a silly tale about a cute little dragon, turned into a 4,000 word story highlighting the beginning of Mako and Shizuku’s marital issues. Because everything has to tie into my fanfic.
(Hope you don’t mind my own little canon for your dragon @monstermonger)

Some observations on Gotham Knights 1.11, "Daddy Issues"
With thanks to writers Natalie Abrams and Caroline Dries
Given the comics background, there was a chance Duela was the Joker's daughter, there was also a chance she was Harvey's, I thought her turning out to be Harvey's daughter would be a great plot twist and BOOM. Here we are. Well played hand on that reveal. (And I wanted to see Misha playing Harvey finding out he's a dad. A+)
Olivia Rose Keegan, Misha Collins, and Lindy Booth really brought it extra much this ep. Fantastic seeing them doing their thing, with Duela and Jane, Duela and Harvey, Duela and Jane and Harvey.
Steph continues to be heartbreaking.
Steph and Harper!!! Sharper ftw. Harper protecting Steph, telling off her mom, their dancing while undercover in the club, Steph touching Harper's earring and choosing the nickname "Bluebird" for her (lovely easter egg), their kiss in front of the belfry window.
the belfry window has become one of my favorite sets in all of dc tv, beautiful Gotham aesthetics, and the series has used that rose window as a canvas for great character driven scenes
the Turner and Cullen hug. Cullen has a very big heart and Turner's being a pain in the neck, we can understand why, trying to shut everybody out now and Cullen's not having it. He cares about Turner, he cares about all of them
Some interesting contrasts in how Harper and Duela care, woven with their similarities. Duela is far more look after only herself, Harper is--look after your closest person first, and yourself. Harper though very rapidly expands who falls under her protective wings. While Duela, who expanded it to Turner, then stops it after Turner, and her mom. "Who cares about the rest." They're your friends, Duela, they care about you
Carrie carried a lot on her shoulders for a long time and now it's collapsed around her since got busted for being Robin, for helping the fugitives. She's confined now. I'm curious to see how that resolves--how does Carrie get back in action, is her mom going to accept her work as Robin, will Carrie have to continue to sneak around
Much exploration of generational trauma. This ep it centered most on Steph and Duela's, but it's always there for them all. The show is steeped in it, with the shadow of Batman, and with the shadows parents leave on their kids, for good or for bad, legacies good and bad, lessons good and bad.

Okay so. Unless something unexpected happens at the last minute, I'm going to see Änglagård the musical in Stockholm next week, and here's the thing: I have literally no idea what it's about.
I haven't watched the movie or even read the synopsis on purpose, because I also didn't do that for Så som i himmelen, and getting to experience that story for the first time via Fredrik Kempe's music touched me to my core. Back then, though, I had some knowledge of Så som i himmelen as a concept and had listened to the Den tid jag har demo religiously (though I had no idea where it fit within the story, I guessed it was near the end of the first act where the main character starts to figure his life out, and then it turned out to be the opening song) – whereas here, I've somehow managed to miss nearly all of the songs, interviews and other stuff they've released.
I wonder if I should do some catch-up with the promotional material before leaving or if I should go in totally blind... but anyways, as a treat to future me and all of you Swedish movie/musical fans out there, here's what I think Änglagård the musical is about, based on the random assortment of Instagram promos I've seen (most watched without audio on):
Fredrik Lycke lives in an old farmhouse called Änglagård that his grandpa built with his very own hands. He feels extremely passionate about the farm and its legacy. Helen Sjöholm is married to Fredrik Lycke and she is also very fond of their home.
But then they either lose all their money and need to sell the farm, or maybe there's some Bennets vs. Mr. Collins kinda situation going on where grandpa willed that the house must be inherited by your idiot nephew in case you don't have any sons – and the buyers/inheritors are rebellious motorcycle rock'n'roll dude Lindy Larsson and his equally rebellious motorcycle striptease chick girlfriend Tuva B. Larsen. Or maybe one of them is Helen Sjöholm and/or Fredrik Lycke's estranged child who hasn't been in contact with them for years but suddenly wants to move back home?
Whatever the case, the young couple, who live in all manner of sin and probably have criminal records, upset the conservative sensibilities of the older couple... and they also remind them of being young and passionately in love, which they aren't anymore, and realising that causes a rift in their relationship. (Sidenote: I know Helen Sjöholm, Fredrik Lycke and Lindy Larsson are all about the same age irl, but onstage, the Larsson/Larsen couple is styled to look younger than the Sjöholm/Lycke couple. So I'm just making assumptions about the characters' ages here!) Furthermore, the older couple is afraid that the young couple won't honor the work and legacy of the people who lived in Änglagård before them. Thus, the young couple needs to prove their worth to the older couple before they can purchase/inherit/move in.
I have no idea how Tommy Körberg figures in all of this, except for that he seems to perform some kinda comic relief funny man song at some point, and possibly also feels passionate about the titular farm. Maybe he is Fredrik Lycke and/or Helen Sjöholm's brother (though hopefully not "and" if I'm correct that Helen Sjöholm and Fredrik Lycke are married in this) and the deal is that if you buy/inherit the farm, you gotta let him stay, so he'll be your resident old funny musical man?
Seriously, I have no idea. Looking forward to seeing what this musical is actually about!
#no spoilers in comments or tags please!!#not 100% serious about selling Tommy Körberg with the house...#but in Denmark I learned that selling grandpa with a house was a real thing in rural Denmark in the olden days!#Änglagård#ihmisraunio.
