Hi!! I saw you're doing the DVD commentary ask game. If you don't mind, I'd love to hear about this passage. Your description of magic is so cool!

Dark magic warps around him, funneling him down, down, down. He reaches toward it with his own magic, trying to guide it, to nudge it in a safe direction. Water. They need to land in water. Otherwise this will end very badly. He solidifies an image in his head. A lake — big and beautiful and clear, waterfalls rushing down into it. There. That’s where he wants them to land. A hand grapples in the darkness. Fingers wrap around his own, familiar magic pouring through them to enhance his own. A slight smile lifts Legend’s lips. Hyrule. The image grows more clear and distinct. The smell of fresh water and dewy grass fills his nostrils. Legend steels himself and takes a deep breath. Any moment now… Heart pounding in his throat, he tightens his hold on Hyrule’s hand. “Don’t let go,” he orders through the waves of their entwined magic. And Hyrule’s grip strengthens in reply. Another moment slides by, a moment filled with utter darkness and the nauseating push and pull of gravity. Legend holds his breath, awaiting impact. It comes in a rush of magic and liquid, cold and heat, light and darkness. Legend catches a glimpse of blue sky and white clouds. Then his body breaks the surface with such force it knocks the air from his lungs.

Thanks!! I had a lot of fun describing magic here. I kinda always enjoy describing it lol. I’ve always been into fantasy (I read the Narnia stories so much as a kid that I practically had them memorized XD) and magic always seems like such a beautiful and powerful thing (even dark magic) that I’m always trying to find a way to capture that. It helps that I was in the Loki fandom before this so I got a good bit of practice figuring out how I wanted to portray his magic and that experience carries over into my LU fics now.

Also, recently I read ‘weathered and wavering’ and the author had such good descriptions of everything but especially magic. I wanted to eat their writing lol. So I was inspired by their work to portray magic as more idk intrinsic to the user’s existence I guess? More alive and linked with them and others.

And I just generally love the idea of magic users being connected through it (hence Legend and Hyrule’s telepathy moment lol).

Believe it or not I actually struggled a lot with this fic and this moment as a whole. I needed Legend to end up in a body of water somehow and I needed most of the Chain to be absent (so they couldn’t save him lol and also so that I wouldn’t have to write all of their reactions to him being a mer). And when I finally settled on the opening with him and Hyrule…I got Covid. So this was actually written as I sat on the couch, feeling miserable, with a cup of tea in one hand and my phone in the other 😅 The fact that it came out coherent at all is incredible.

It did help that I played Alttp during that time. I got to include a vague description of a part of Legend’s world (specifically Zora Waterfall, which I think would be gorgeous in Botw-type graphics). So though I don’t explicitly state it, Legend and Hyrule (and eventually the Chain) are actually in Legend’s Hyrule in this fic. Which is cool cause I usually default to Wild’s XD But also bad for Legend cause YIKES that creepy scientist was in his Hyrule??? He’s not gonna love that. As if he needed more problems

I don't really think it's fair to dismiss the idea that that guy might have been framed for killing the CEO as like an unfounded conspiracy theory when NYPD has a proven history of planting/fabricating evidence on people. in 2011 there was a massive investigation of the NYPD and hundreds of cases against people were dismissed after a former police officer testified that they literally have a name for planting evidence on people: flaking. you cannot be out here acting like considering the possibility that cops who do this shit under normal circumstances might possibly also do it when they're under intense global pressure and scrutiny is the same as republicans thinking democrats run a secret pedophile ring in the basement of a pizza restaurant

alright, I’m annoyed with the class that I’m taking. it’s about writing novels, and I thought it would have cool stuff about balancing your narrative and developing themes etc, but instead she spent the first class talking about how every book fits into the Hero’s Journey (the monomyth template). and I was somewhat of a contrarian, and said “can you give us examples of books that don’t fit into this template?” and she said “no. because all books fit.”

but I dunno man, I just finished reading this Korean book where the plot is just the character having a string of hookups and reflecting on them without changing in any way. I don’t know if it’s possible to contort that into the Hero’s Journey.

Batman gives each of his Robins a different code to use when they’re in trouble and need immediate extraction. He promises that when they call, he’ll drop everything just to get to them, come hell or high water.

Jason, during his time with the League, shares his code with Damian, to be used “only in the direst of circumstances, when you have exhausted all other options.” He doesn’t know if Bruce will answer, given how fractured their relationship was before he died, but it is better than nothing. Every tool counts when they live such dangerous lives.

Damian uses it exactly once, and Bruce, who still feels the loss of his son like a yawning chasm in his chest, responds to it even though he knows it can’t be Jason because Jason’s dead. What he finds, instead of Jason, is a boy in League garbs, drenched in blood from the tips of his midnight-black hair to his too-small feet, with a face that Bruce sees himself and Talia in, requesting asylum from a grandfather who wishes to possess his body. Bruce doesn’t question how this boy who is so clearly his son knew the code. Talia al Ghul is resourceful and places family above all; the code is not beyond her abilities to discover, and she is not above using Bruce’s desperate love for his dead son to ensure that hers does not meet the same fate.

Bruce takes Damian in, because of course he does, and since Jason is dead he allows Damian to keep using the code. After all, it’s not like Jason is alive to use it, right? If someone uses the code, there’s no one it could be but Damian, right?

The next time the code is used, Bruce traces the location to Gotham even though Damian was supposed to be in Bludhaven visiting Dick. But whatever happened that resulted in Damian being in Gotham can wait, because he has already failed one son and he will not fail another, his son is in trouble and he needs to get to him, he needs to—

What he finds, instead of Damian, is a boy (just eighteen, too young, but also too old, but also he will always be a boy to him) in League garbs, drenched in blood from the tips of his midnight-black hair to his too-large feet (when had he gotten so big), wearing the face of his dead son.

(Who, maybe, just maybe, may no longer be so dead.)

anyone else thinking about effie spending 24 years watching haymitch completely fall apart. effie, who met haymitch by accident, who knows exactly what kind of person he is, who sees him every year on his birthday for 24 years and each year he’s drunker, each year he’s angrier, each year he’s faster to give up. and then they get katniss and peeta. peeta, who is kind and open and understanding, who refuses to give up on haymitch. and katniss, who is so much like haymitch at 16 that it hurts. and over the few days they’re together, effie watches haymitch come back to life. watches him try. watches him have hope. and then they get to keep not one but both of those kids. they get to come home. and then, less then a year later, effie pulls haymitch’s name at the reaping.
