Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
From trap beats to soft acoustic guitar to low bass thumps what holds it all together is Eilish's ever wavering voice. This isn't my first listen, but I did notice something new this time. Any song that exudes confidence is coupled with auto tune and as the album goes on the songs get more sincere and the auto tune vocals go away. It's dramatic and vulnerable and sincere at the same time. An album that feels like it is struggling to stay above the water.

Todd Rundgren - Something / Anything?
I appreciate that Todd Rundgren seems to be having a good time making this record. I think if it were cut down to a solid 45 minutes it would be an amazing record. As it stands Something / Anything? definitely drags on. There are just a lot of banal ballads and not enough weird goofy shit. The track where Rundgren demonstrates various recording defects is weirdly one of the best on here. Interrupting the album to be like "here's what a poorly produced record sounds like" is really funny. I wish he goofed around more on this.

D'Angelo and the Vanguard - Black Messiah
When this album came out I just let it pass me by. D'Angelo is incredibly influencial, but I've just never found his music that engaging. And then a friend was like "no you should check it out it's really good" so I listened to it and it was really good! The tone is so warm and so intimate. It's produced like a late 60s funk record with lyrics to match. Putting aside his playboy persona D'Angelo opts for very socially conscious lyrics about social unrest, the romanticization of suffering, the BLM movement, etc. It's a really beautiful album, it never loses it's groove, and it never gets boring.

Diana Ross - Diana
My knowledge of post Supremes Diana Ross is basically just as the sample from リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー. That song isn't on this album but my point is that I had no meaningful frame of reference for this and I kinda didn't expect much. Turns out that it was full of sick disco bangers! Yeah it's basically a CHIC album with Diana Ross on vocals and that's not a bad thing. It just seems natural that she would sing disco given her influence on the genre.

Taylor Swift - 1989
I don't really get Taylor Swift. This album is fine. It's not great, but it's fine. So why are people so worked up over her paint by numbers breakup songs? Its cause they wanna fuck her right? This is literally just a worse version of Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen. I know this album came out first don't fucking get at me. Just listen to Emotion it's infinitely better.

i keep coming back to 'i was a functioning alcoholic til nobody noticed my new aesthetic' because i do distinctly remember conversations about how taylor seemed to be drinking a lot more and getting drunk at like every awards show she went to. and those conversations were coming from a place of concern and of hoping that she was alright and that this wasn't a problem.
so to then say 'ugh i can't believe no one noticed this problem i had' when i know that people definitely did, and on the same album say that fans who are genuinely concerned about a new relationship that you are in are just 'bitching and moaning'? what do you want from them? you're talking about so many people who do at least believe that they are coming from a place of care and concern, and you are totally dismissing them on both ends of a scale!
not to mention that her implying that since nobody (???) was noticing her ~aesthetic~ drinking problem she just stopped having it is a bit of a kick in the teeth to people who do have drinking problems and can't just stop having them, since that's not how it fucking works.

Truly wild that people are like “Omg! Taylor Swift is including her new music as she tours!” Yeah, bestie. That’s what tours are. Literally it’s the whole point. What would be crazy was if she did the Wenis, because the Wenis is a dance and everybody is a genius who knows it in advance

Listen okay I'm no Swiftie but I know these tickets in the charity auction could actually raise some meaningful funds that'd go towards crucial support and resources for residential school survivors and their families.
IRSSS does wonderful work, extending their help not only to Indigenous communities impacted by residential schools, but also to families of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls as well as Indigenous youth who may be struggling with the criminal justice system.
Regardless if you're a Swift fan or not though, if you're in the Vancouver area consider checking out the upcoming IRSSS Anniversary Gala on November 21, 2024:

I can't fucking believe yall were up Rings of Power's ass when HotD decided to have Our Lady of Sorrows of Westeros cause a civil war because she forgot her own trashbag of a son was named after Aegon the Conqueror and she took a dying man's rambling about some pretty fundamental history as him designating him as heir. Like, I'm supposed to think this lady is smart. What even.
And if any Alicent stans want to come for me I want you to seriously sit down. And think about how your fave is written. How she reacts to things. How she processes information. Like, this is someone who's been in court for 20+ years and still doesn't get the basics. I hate Philippa Gregory's books with a passion but Mary Boleyn was a smarter bitch than this. This is a writers' problem.

are fans not allowed to prefer Taylor over Beyonce? why do you people always use the race card like do something else its getting tiring atp...
You are definitely allowed to prefer Taylor Swift over Beyoncé for… whatever reason that may be god bless your unseasoned soul. What you shouldn’t be doing is diminishing the work of Beyoncé and other black and queer artists in order to prop Taylor up. The fact that it’s the year of 2023 and we’re having these weird ass conversations of can Beyoncé even sing, dance, or put on a performance? You don’t even have to be a fan of Beyoncé to recognize the immense talent and impact that woman has on multiple demographics of people. Whether that be the Black community, other POC, or the LGBTQ community, Beyoncé has made an impact. And she actually does her research too and doesn’t use minorities as brownie points in her work (cough taylor’s vogue dancer cough). Beyoncé’s work only continues to improve, mind you. And to either deny or downplay that talent in order to prop up a mediocre white woman and her mediocre lyrics and her mediocre production is insane.
Prefer Taylor over Beyoncé? Ok. Love both? Ok. There is nothing wrong with that. As I stated in my previous post, I don’t like comparing female artists; it doesn’t do anything for me or those artists (especially since, from what I understand, they’re on good terms). However, if you expect me to believe that what’s considered the standard for Taylor is the same standard for Beyoncé (or, the standard for white artists vs the standard for black artists), it’s not going to happen. If you want an example, Beyoncé preparing for Coachella is more than enough proof; she had to destroy and completely reset her body after giving birth to twins in order to give the best show she could possibly give. Being the first black woman to headline the festival meant she had literally everything running on the line. We see this sentiment true with other black artists, too, like Halle Bailey, who had to undergo death threats, racism, bullying, and harassment despite having a perfect performance on the big screen and during her live performances. Halle had to prove she deserved to be treated with human decency, and had she even had a strand of hair left out she would have been crucified. I can even go on about the treatment of darker skinned vs light skinned/mixed women (those in closer proximity to whiteness) in the rap industry. We would be here forever talking about this.
And it’s not me pulling out the race card, it’s me simply recognizing that white women are celebrated for their mediocrity and black women are not. It’s me saying that Beyoncé’s fans calling out Taylor’s whiteness is in no where comparable to them calling out Beyoncé’s blackness, especially since Taylor’s whiteness benefits her in contrast to the way Beyoncé’s blackness punishes her. We can no longer pretend the struggle of white women are identical to the struggle of black women. Because, as we’ve seen with Taylor, her ally ship is performative, something she can hang up in the closet and forget about when she goes home at night. When it comes down to it, she will always adhere to her white womanhood to get her out of the shit she places herself in.
If you want to be ignorant and play colorblind to these issues, that’s on you. But don’t expect me to pretend that there isn’t an issue here—an issue that has always been here.

You know what’s a crazy butterfly effect we never talk about?? The musical film ‘Grease’ eventually leading to Olivia Rodrigo’s fame. Think about it:
The film ‘Grease’ was released in 1978, and its immense success led to the sequel ‘Grease 2’ (1982). In 1999 a script for ‘Grease 3’ was developed, but the project was shelved until 2004 when the script was adapted into ‘High School Musical’. ‘High School Musical’ was then released in 2006, becoming an instant hit and earning the film two sequels. The movie series had such lasting fame, that in 2017 a TV show inspired by the film series was developed titled ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ (‘HSMTMTS’ for short). Olivia Rodrigo was cast as one of the leading roles in the show, and was given the opportunity to write an original song for her character - the song she ended up writing titled ‘All I Want’. Upon the release of ‘HSMTMTS’ in 2019, ‘All I Want’ began gaining popularity and charted on the Billboard Hot 100. This gained Olivia interest from label executives, and she ended up signing a record deal with Interscope/Geffen. During Olivia’s time on ‘HSMTMTS’ she met and dated a fellow co-star, and their subsequent break up inspired her to write the song ‘driver’s license’. She then released ‘driver’s license’ as her debut single in 2021, and the song charted at number 1 and skyrocketed her to a whole new level of fame.
So without ‘Grease’, you wouldn’t have ‘High School Musical’, and without ‘High School Musical’ you wouldn’t have ‘HSMTMTS’, and without ‘HSMTMTS’ Olivia would not have written the song that got her a record deal or met the person who inspired ‘driver’s license’, and THAT is how Grease led to Olivia Rodrigo’s fame over 40 years after its release.
