There is no FLOWER OF THE DAY for this chapter. Instead, a riddle shall take its place to prepare you for the things you are about to face.
RIDDLE OF THE DAY: “I am fear, and I am pain, I am the sorrow on your face. I am the burden you carry and the future you brace. But I am the friend whose hand you shall take.”
Once upon a time in a small town, there lived two siblings. An older brother and his sister. They were raised in a loving family, but as they grew older, it became apparent that, the brother, had developed a disturbing and unpredictable behaviour.
His behaviour became increasingly erratic and unsettling as time went on. He would often exhibit signs of paranoia, believing that he was constantly being watched and that everyone around him was conspiring against him. He would lash out in fits of anger and aggression, causing harm to himself and others.
The younger sister was deeply concerned about her brother’s well-being and the impact his actions had on their family. She tirelessly sought help, consulting various doctors and psychiatrists, but finding a solution proved to be challenging.
The younger sister, torn between her love for her brother and the need to protect herself and their family, faced an immense emotional burden. She grappled with feelings of guilt, wondering if there was more, she could have done to prevent her brother’s descent into psychosis.
As the years passed, her brother’s condition worsened. He became increasingly disconnected from reality, living in a constant state of fear and anxiety. His once-promising future turned bleak as he struggled to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or pursue any semblance of a normal life.
After the brother’s diagnosis the family was torn to shreds. The father became a drunkard, the mother, crippled by her guilt sat and did nothing all day and the brother was well…psychotic.
That left the younger sister. Neglected and later…abused.
Despite the hardships, the younger sister never gave up on her family especially her brother. She tried to be their pillar of support, offering a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. Even though her skin would always end up bruised and her bones broken. She advocated tirelessly for her family’s mental health subsequently forgetting her own.
However, the sister’s unwavering love and determination eventually led them to a breakthrough. Through a combination of therapy (Allowing her body to be used as a punching bag), medication (drugs and alcohol), and a supportive network of professionals (the police who were often called as the neighbors grew concerned about the bruises on her skin), The brother began to stabilize.
While his recovery was slow and not without its setbacks, The brother gradually regained some sense of normalcy. With time, he was able to rebuild trust with his family- mostly his sister- and reintegrate into society, albeit with ongoing support and understanding.
The sister’s devotion and resilience had played a pivotal role in her brother’s healing process. The bond between the two grew even stronger as they faced and overcame the immense challenges together. Or so she thought.
“Mom and Dad are dead”.
Two months after the brother’s recovery the siblings’ parents had died.
No cause of death
No weapon.
Not even the bodies were left.
Just the wedding rings covered in their blood.
The words ‘A love as peaceful as a dove’ were engraved in their parents’ rings.
The sister grew depressed and just as she was there for him, her brother was there for her.
He didn’t cry at the news or the loss.
She thought he was strong and brave.
She adored him.
Pity, the brother would think.
His little sister didn’t know that he had simply become better at hiding his crazy.
Even before his descent into madness the brother was always known to be cruel, dishonest, aggressive, selfish, and manipulative to everyone but his little sister.
He loved her dearly.
‘Dove’ he would call her as she was known for her kind heart, intelligence, and a creative spirit that set her apart from others.
He loved her like a brother should love his sister.
Or…he wanted to…
Unfortunately, fate had an unexpected twist in store for him, for it led him down a path of forbidden love that would test his sanity.
A test that he would fail.
Every night after their parents died the brother would lie in room and think about his 'dove'.
In the very next room, was his sister and the love of his life.
He knew that she didn’t love him the way he loved her.
And even though she would resent him for the things he planned to do, now that their parents weren’t here…he decided he had to have her.
By will or by force.
Every night after his decision he went into her room.
And every night His sister lost a piece of her innocence.
Unfortunately, by force.
She would fight him.
She would scream.
She would cry.
Yet in his eyes she was just being a brat.
‘Dove’ He would call after her smiling as he pinned her hands above her head ‘Don’t try to run from me’.
Before the sister knew it, she had spent her days trapped in a home filled with fear and pain, enduring the relentless abuse inflicted upon her by her own family.
She became desperate for a chance at freedom, she made a brave decision to escape and forge her own path.
One moonlit night, as the stars twinkled overhead, she gathered her strength and resolve. With a small bag containing her most cherished belongings - a dog-eared book her mother loved and her savings of 200 dollars- she tiptoed out of her room, careful not to make a sound that might alert her tormentor. Every creak of the floorboards echoed like a symphony of trepidation, but she knew that the risk of staying was far greater than the fear of leaving.
Her heart pounding, she slipped out into the night, guided only by the light of the moon. And the scent of roses from the neighbouring houses
Oh, how she loved roses.
She ventured into the unknown, her footsteps carrying her away from the place she had once called home. Fear and uncertainty gripped her, but the glimmer of hope illuminated her path.
As she walked, she encountered a kind stranger who offered her a job and shelter.
The stranger recognized the pain in her eyes and extended their compassion and support. With their help, she found temporary refuge and a respite from the horrors she had endured.
But she knew that her journey was far from over. She needed to find a place where she could heal and build a life free from the shackles of abuse.
With determination etched on her face, she pursued education and learned new skills, determined to create a better future for herself.
As time passed, she flourished. She pursued her passions, - working with flowers and learning all about them- embracing the power of her voice and using it to advocate for others and herself.
However, as new as she tried to make her life out to be…she knew that one day, her brother would find her.
With fear living in her heart, she decided that she would not give herself to any man. She feared that they would take advantage of her like her brother did.
However, she met someone.
He made her feel things.
He made her do things she never thought she would.
He was a dangerous man who ironically, made her feel safe from danger.
He was her safe heaven.
And he called her ‘Flower’.

6. Have you watched any of the deleted scenes from Thor 1, The Avengers, or Thor 2? If yes, choose one deleted scene that definitely deserved to have stayed in.
Odin and Frigga's fight from Thor 1! I'm on my hands and knees beginning the MCU to spare Frigga a scrap of complexity, and the combination of this fight and Frigga fervently defending Odin to Loki during the Odinsleep could be so interesting. To me it looks a lot like she fears Odin here, but she also seems to sincerely believe a lot of the fucked up things she says in his defence. But she's also kind of known for lying. So like... Is she lying? Or has he won her over? Is she choosing harmony over justice? Is she choosing herself over her children? Does she really believe she's doing the right thing? I don't have the answers, but I wish there was more discussion of it. And maybe even more Frigga scenes in TDW as a result of living in the Complex T1 Frigga universe. Put it back!!!!
14. Do you have any headcanons about Jotunheim?
I'm not the best worldbuilder so I basically have two in total, which you might already know about:
A) That Jotunheim and Asgard's rivalry is ancient. The two civilisations have been in contact since time immemorial and they define themselves in relation/in contrast to each other.
B) That bilgesnipe are Jotun cavalry animals.
19. Find an insect/arthropod that reminds you of Loki (aesthetically, behaviourally, etc.)
Ant; boot.
I'm partial to a bit of spider imagery. The webs, the dark hiding places, the intricate schemes and need for control. The kind of elegance and dexterity that people find inexplicably unsettling. Being unjustly feared and persecuted for their "creepy" appearance and for their vital role in the ecosystem/narrative that they did not choose. It's all very gothic and fun. I should use it more.
23. Headcanons about Loki's Jotun form?
LOKI! HAS!! DWARFISM!!! This is deeply Real To Me, to the extent that I was genuinely surprised when I first realised that there are other interpretations. His father thought he was "too small" and abandoned him to die. Does that not sound like a disability narrative to other people? Does it not resonate perfectly with his pervasive but unsubstantiated weakling-coding?
I do see people's point about Loki not quite looking like other Jotuns and so possibly being partially another species, but IDK. That option just doesn't quite compel me the same way. The idea of Loki being caught between cultures/species is *already covered* by his fucked up adoption situation. Physical disability is a whole new thematic layer.
-> Ask me about early MCU Loki!!

Rasira
Introduction
---
Rasira Veylen
Appearance:
Rasira is the embodiment of quiet intensity. With deep, forest-green eyes that seem to hold a storm within, his gaze is piercing and thoughtful. His raven-black hair is shoulder-length, often tied back in a low ponytail or left to frame his sharp, angular face. His fair skin is littered with faint scars, remnants of his battles with the curse. Rasira is tall, with a lean but strong build, his posture always poised and precise.
Personality:
Rasira is stoic and independent, often carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He’s polite but distant, preferring to keep people at arm’s length. His intelligence is razor-sharp, and his dry wit often catches people off guard. Beneath his composed exterior, Rasira hides a deep well of vulnerability and fear—primarily stemming from his curse and the danger it brings to those around him. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, especially Cheruu, but struggles to fully trust others.
Quirks:
☆ Has an unshakeable habit of drinking tea whenever he’s stressed.
☆ Collects antique pocket watches but refuses to explain why.
☆ Avoids mirrors whenever possible; they seem to unsettle him.
☆ Is incredibly precise in everything, from his handwriting to how he arranges his desk.
Background:
Born in the country of Valendir, Rasira grew up in the quaint town of Niamon. At a young age, he was cursed by an unknown entity, a fate that left him both physically and emotionally scarred. His lineag eof men are cursed and always use feminine names to protect themselves, but this time however, the curse is stronger than before. Rasira met Cheruu in primary school, and the two formed a bond that would withstand even the darkest times. He is a first-year Psychology major.
---
Nuelavi Seran Tethralis
Appearance:
Nuelavi is striking, with brown eyes that seem to see through people’s façades. His black hair is always neatly combed back, though a few rebellious strands fall onto his forehead, softening his otherwise sharp features. His tall, broad-shouldered frame and impeccable posture exude authority. His pale complexion, combined with his perpetual calm expression, gives him an almost otherworldly aura.
Personality:
Nuelavi is confident, analytical, and enigmatic. He carries himself with the air of someone who always has a plan, though his calm exterior often hides his inner turmoil. Beneath his calculated demeanor lies a deeply passionate and protective heart, especially when it comes to Rasira. While he can be blunt and intimidating, he’s fiercely loyal and will go to great lengths to help those he cares for. He has a weakness for subtle humor, though he rarely shows it.
Quirks:
☆ Always carries a leather-bound notebook where he jots down thoughts, observations, or ideas.
☆ Has an impeccable sense of fashion but always wears the same silver ring on his right hand.
☆ Tends to lean against walls with his arms crossed during conversations.
☆ Hates coffee but drinks it anyway because it "keeps him sharp."
Background:
Nuelavi is from Drenwell, Valendir’s bustling capital city. He grew up in a strict household where excellence was the expectation, and failure was not an option. As a Philosophy major in his third year, he’s fascinated by morality, the human psyche, and what drives people. Meeting Rasira shook his typically composed world, igniting feelings and vulnerabilities he wasn’t prepared to face.
---
Cheruu "Cherry" Ryvele Asterin
Appearance:
Cheruu is smaller in stature, with a slight, wiry frame and a perpetually curious expression. His round glasses always seem to slide down his nose, requiring constant adjustment. His sandy brown hair is an unkempt mess of waves, and his hazel eyes are bright with enthusiasm. Despite his messy appearance, he has a charm that makes him endearing.
Personality:
Cheruu is the quintessential nerd—sweet, intelligent, and a little scatterbrained. His mind is a repository of random facts, and he’s not afraid to share them, even if no one asked. While he’s often lost in thought or his studies, he has an undeniable warmth that draws people in. Cheruu is deeply empathetic, often putting others before himself, though his naïveté sometimes leads him into trouble.
Quirks:
☆ Has a penchant for quoting philosophers, even in casual conversations.
☆ Cannot function without his morning hot chocolate.
☆ Hums classical music while studying or thinking.
☆ Is surprisingly clumsy, often tripping over his own feet.
Background:
Raised in Niamon, Cheruu has been Rasira’s best friend since primary school. While Rasira was the quiet, brooding type, Cheruu was the one who brought levity and light to their friendship. Now a first-year Philosophy major at Argencrest University, Cheruu is as dedicated to his studies as he is to supporting Rasira through thick and thin.
---
Balin "Blueberry" Vestran
Appearance:
Balin is broad-shouldered and muscular, with an athletic build that contrasts sharply with Cheruu’s wiry frame. His tousled auburn hair and freckled cheeks give him a boyish charm, though his sharp jawline adds an air of ruggedness. His dark brown eyes are full of mischief, and his lopsided grin is almost always present.
Personality:
Balin is the jokester of the group, brimming with chaotic energy and unfiltered humor. He thrives on making people laugh, even if it means embarrassing himself in the process. Despite his seemingly carefree demeanor, Balin is fiercely protective of his friends and harbors a deep fear of abandonment. He’s not the most academically inclined, but his emotional intelligence and loyalty more than make up for it.
Quirks:
☆ Always has snacks on him, no matter the time or place.
☆ Refers to himself in the third person during moments of panic or excitement.
☆ Has an irrational fear of birds, stemming from a childhood incident.
☆ Will do anything on a dare, no matter how absurd.
Background:
Balin grew up in Haverfall, a small farming town in Valendir. He joined Argencrest University to study Environmental Science but quickly found himself pulled into the orbit of Rasira and Cheruu during their second year. Though he’s wary of Nuelavi, he’s come to trust him begrudgingly due to their shared concern for Rasira.

"I think I would make a good president, don't you say?"
ANM №: ANM-539
Identification: Mr. Oink, the Hillbilly Pig
Danger Level: Darlig 🔴 | Contained ⭕️
Responsible Researcher: Dr. Öctavio Kalev
Anomaly Type: Rural, animatronic, predatory
Lockdown: ANM-539, designated as "Mr. Oink, the Hillbilly Pig," is to be kept in a soundproof, steel-reinforced containment cell measuring 6m x 6m x 6m at Heavy Zone Containment Chambers. Due to the anomaly's strength and extremely aggressive nature, the containment cell must be reinforced with a minimum thickness of 2 meters of steel. Remote surveillance is required, as direct observation has been shown to trigger severe psychological disturbances in personnel. No personnel are to enter the containment area between 19:00 and 06:00 hours, as ANM-539 becomes fully active during these times.
The cell is to be fitted with motion detectors and seismic sensors to detect any movement within the containment. Any signs of agitation or attempts at escape must be reported immediately, and containment protocols updated as necessary. Personnel exposed to ANM-539 vocalizations for more than five minutes are to be immediately removed from duty and subjected to psychiatric evaluation.
Testing is to be conducted remotely via robotic devices. Under no circumstances are humanoid test subjects allowed within ANM-539 containment after dark.
Description: ANM-539 is a large, animatronic-like entity resembling a grotesque, anthropomorphic pig, standing approximately 2.40 meters tall and weighing roughly 350 kilograms. Despite its size and apparent mechanical construction, ANM-539 exhibits agility and speed far exceeding that of any known animatronic. Its exterior consists of a combination of synthetic and organic materials, including pigskin, burlap clothing, and straw, which appear to be integrated into its "body" through unknown means, its interior appears to be made of extremely strong steel. The entity wears what seems to be stereotypical "hillbilly" clothing, including overalls and a sailor’s hat, enhancing its unsettling appearance.
ANM-539 was discovered in 1997 in the remains of an abandoned amusement park in [REDACTED], USA. It was found standing motionless in one of the attraction barns, holding a large corn stalk. Upon its discovery, the entity became active and attempted to pursue the recovery team, resulting in the deaths of eight personnel.
ANM-539 becomes active during nighttime hours, between 19:00 and 06:00 hours, during which it exhibits highly aggressive behavior. The entity can run at speeds of up to 50 km/h, despite its bulk, and produces loud, thunderous footstep sounds. When it is in motion, ANM-539 emits a variety of auditory stimuli, including pig-like squeals, distorted mechanical laughter, and phrases spoken in a heavily accented, mocking tone. ANM-539 personality can be described as satirical, sexist, and deeply offensive, as it frequently makes derogatory remarks about women and minorities in a grating, exaggerated Southern accent.
The psychological effects of prolonged exposure to ANM-539 sounds are severe. Those exposed to its pig-like squeals, laughter, or speech for periods longer than five minutes report hearing the noises long after the source has ceased. Continued exposure (typically over a period of 15 minutes or more) results in individuals developing catatonic schizophrenia, characterized by severe emotional withdrawal, auditory hallucinations, and a marked fear of animatronics, puppets and dolls. This fear can become so extreme that affected individuals may refuse to enter any location where animatronic figures are present, often believing that these objects are alive and waiting to attack.
Behavioral Patterns:
During the active hours, ANM-539 is highly mobile, patrolling its containment area while laughing and making various pig-like noises. It is extremely territorial and will relentlessly pursue any living creature that enters its perceived territory. ANM-539 is noted for producing a disturbing mixture of human and pig-like screams while running. These noises have been recorded to reach up to 120 decibels, causing significant discomfort and hearing damage to nearby individuals.
If ANM-539 successfully catches its target, it will begin to assault them violently, primarily through repeated punches to the face and upper body. The assault typically continues until the victim's face is rendered unrecognizable, at which point ANM-539 will emit a low, satisfied grunt and retreat to a dormant state. Autopsies of victims have revealed severe cranial trauma, with many cases involving complete disfiguration of the head and face.
Despite ANM-539 mechanical appearance, it is capable of expressing what appears to be delight when inflicting pain, often laughing hysterically while beating its victim. This laughter, combined with its pig-like squeals, creates a disturbing cacophony that has been described by survivors as "soul-crushing" and "nightmarish."
Addendum 539-A: Incident Log 539-Alpha
On ██/██/20██, ANM-539 breached containment following a power outage at Department-██. ANM-539 was observed on security cameras moving at unprecedented speeds throughout the facility, causing structural damage and triggering numerous alarms. The entity began emitting high-pitched squeals and laughter as it roamed the corridors, with personnel reporting that the sounds were heard even in areas where the entity was not present.
During the breach, ██ personnel were killed, most from direct physical trauma inflicted by ANM-539. Surviving personnel exhibited signs of extreme psychological distress, with several requiring hospitalization due to catatonic symptoms. ANM-539 was eventually contained after 8 hours of pursuit and destruction, following the reactivation of Departament-██'s emergency power systems and deployment of mobile task force personnel equipped with high-powered tranquilizers.
Termination Proposal:
A request has been submitted for the termination of ANM-539 due to the escalating number of casualties associated with its containment breaches. The proposal is under review by the Eleven Counselors, pending further research into the anomaly's origins and potential uses.

I keep forgetting that "my" William Afton only lives in my head so I wanted to ramble about him a bit ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ
The version of William Afton who I self ship with is a very self indulgent combination of all my favorite traits from all his incarnations - I love all versions of William but this one is mine :3
He's mostly based on his portrayal in The Silver Eyes - he's theatrical, goofy, downright bizarre, and unsettling all at the same time. Like in The Silver Eyes, he has no family and never really did (a fact he is deeply jealous of Henry Emily over) - so no tragic backstory involving his children dying, he's simply a selfish, arrogant serial killer. He's a control freak who doesn't want to allow anyone close to him because of the vulnerability it entails but at the same time he's incredibly lonely so he keeps himself company with his machines and the spirits of the children he has slain who, in his mind, are now happier as they're children forever experiencing their "happiest day" at Freddy's who don't have to experience the pains of growing up. Despite how that sounds, his motivation to kill is still entirely selfish - killing gives him a sense of control and euphoria unlike anything else in his life.
Despite his naturally offputting demeanor he's very good at wearing masks and can actually be incredibly charming when he needs to be. He's very manipulative and inherently good at knowing what others want to hear, which he uses to get in their good graces and gain their trust or to manipulate them.
As Springtrap his personality is mostly the same, though he becomes less goofy and more gruff and markedly cruel, enjoying relishing in his victims' terror and pain (which now includes adult victims since he has the strength and lack of fear to pursue them as well).

Before I begin I must say I am a swiftie.
I love Taylor. Her music means a lot to me. It literally helped me in a lot of ways. But her recent actions have actually genuinely is upsetting to me(not saying she has to live the way I want her to but I feel really sad). Its just........he is a very disgusting person. He is someone who was literally m@********* in public and made misogynistic comments.
My biggest fury with him was when he called harry a queerbaiter. It was extra hard for me because harry's acceptance was what made me feel peace about my sexuality. I am still figuring out my sexuality and it's mostly fluctuating. He was the first person I saw say 'you dont have to tick every box'. He said that when I was questioning myself for the 100th time. Because if you want to come out to everyone you need a label right! He made me realise it's okay to not know everything and it felt like a warm hug from a friend. And watching M@** ***** call that person a 'queerbaiter' angered me to extreme and 'almost' destroyed my self esteem wondering whether everyone around me thought I was faking for attention too. I know him and Taylor have been friends for a long time but her being romantically linked with someone like that and being so carefree about it while he has been linked to 100th warranted controversy makes me feel sick in the stomach. It makes me wonder if she's like 'I know the things he said/did but I don't care ' and it hurts me so much to even think she feels that way. I know she is a good person and all that but.....the Taylor who made me feel accepted about being the odd kid in the school or the one who understood about my fear of growing up seems so far away. I feel so hurt by the fact that I am feeling this. I think I need to take a distance from her and her art and I don't know how long will that be.
Sorry if I bothered you with such a long paragraph but I feel you can understand this better than anyone here
hi love, i apologize it took me all day to answer this! so i'm going to be honest, i've been thinking about this specific situation ever since the first rumor surfaced, but i didn't address it since i know it sounds like fan-based bias, even though to me it's a larger issue than that.
let me digress for a moment - i've seen a lot of his fans try to defend the n*zi salute as "satire," and that it wasn't meant to be antisemitic, but as a jewish person, i find this deeply troubling, because, even as edgy ~performance art~, using such a direct symbol of hate is never okay (in conjunction with a lyric referencing someone who's been virulently antisemitic in public - and yes, the lyric itself is satirical criticism, but the combination of the two is unsettling, to say the least). it's concerning and it's hurtful and it's inappropriate, full stop. his non-apologies for his grossly racist and sexist comments are as well.
his antics onstage (i have to laugh at the raw steak thing somehow being a criticism of "toxic masculinity"...bro. what?) also cross a line from being performance art to being. ick. (UGH i'd forgotten that other incident you mentioned because it's gross and i blocked it from my memory. just. WHY!!!)
in truth, i had no idea who he was and had never even heard his name (though i was aware of the 1975, i never listened to them) until their album came out last year and suddenly he was spouting off everywhere and doing things and fans began to speak about the old rumors of he and taylor (which i dismissed out of hand, but now. idk). everything i've learned since has been against my will tbh.
which brings us to that awful queerbaiting comment. if you've followed me for any length of time, you know this is a particular hot button issue of mine, i just get incensed at the way that term is misused and weaponized against real people, and harry gets it in a particularly disgusting way because certain sections of the internet seem to feel a superiority complex in tearing him down for existing. never once has harry claimed to be a bastion of queerness or a trailblazer of fashion, and yet he's criticized for...what exactly? being himself? dressing however one chooses without being boxed in by gender expectations is exactly what we're meant to be aiming for, isn't it? not demanding someone's label and identity is supposed to be part of championing the community, isn't it? his choice to remain unlabeled matters. not only because it's no one's business but his own, but also because BEING an unlabeled/mspec person IS itself a whole identity. what matty said about this was appalling and WAY over the line, and particularly disrespectful since they're supposedly friendly. he had no right to make the comments that he did. he should've received more criticism for it than he did (and had he attacked anyone but harry, he probably would have).
(i wish what adam lambert said in response had gotten more traction. Automatically labeling looks and performances that aren’t cisheteronormative as queerbait is “almost underestimating the intelligence of gay people.”)
you feeling enraged and hurt by that is understandable, and you have every right to feel that way. it touches my heart to read that harry has helped you feel more at peace with your sexuality. i've mentioned before that i've grappled with what exactly mine is too and where i fall on whatever spectrum, and just the idea that we don't even HAVE to put a concrete definition on that, or that it's allowed to be fluid, is a relief. i also feel like there's a huge amount of bias where people forget that just because you haven't been in a relationship with someone of ___ identity/gender doesn't mean your own identity isn't real! you DON'T have to tick every box, and you ARE allowed to expand or change along the way, and you're still you and still valid! nobody has to have one set label forever, and nobody else is owed that explanation from you!
He made me realise it's okay to not know everything and it felt like a warm hug from a friend. 🥺💕💕💕 this is so sweet and i feel confident he would be touched by it too.
i am SO sorry that what matty said hurt you the way that it did, it was a reckless, thoughtless thing of him to say, and you and every other person who is working out their identity or who feels confident remaining unlabeled deserves better than him cruelly running his mouth. (which i also think had a level of jealousy in it, because, let's be honest here - he's never going to be harry, success-wise, and he also admitted harry declined to perform at his show, so). matty has frustrated and upset me on multiple occasions since i became aware of his behavior, and you're allowed to feel that way.
regarding taylor, as i said earlier, of course we have no control nor input over what she does or who she associates with, and much as we may love her, she is just a flawed human being too and she has made mistaken choices, and has overlooked behavior from others that perhaps she shouldn't have, or that we wouldn't ourselves, but only she can make those decisions for her life. i've seen a lot of disgust and concern over this on my dash, and i'm with everyone on all of that, but at the same time i think it's a bit of a wake-up call that she is her own autonomous woman whom we do not know personally, and we have to find our own ways to approach that boundary. if that means ignoring this until it blows over, if that means taking space away from her for a while, if that means making silly jokes. i think as long as we're not harassing others (which you would never! <3 but the uptick in cruel anons/death threats that have happened this past month make me sad and i wish everyone could take a breath and...not do that!), however we choose to deal with it is the best we can do. i tend to suspect she's been going through it, and maybe this won't last long, but that doesn't make it a great look nor is it unconcerning. regardless, you should do what's best for yourself and look out for your well-being. if that means detaching for a while, i promise it doesn't make you a bad fan, even though i know that hurts ("the Taylor who made me feel accepted about being the odd kid in the school or the one who understood about my fear of growing up seems so far away." though i'm older than you, this happened to me in my own sense during my 1989 disconnect. i really do get it, and seeing a similar pattern here is a bit painful). i also want to say that i think, knowing what we do know about her and her character and kindness, she'd still want you to feel accepted and loved, and wouldn't align with the trashy things he's said and done, but i understand why willingness to overlook it hurts as well.
thank you for confiding in me and letting this out, i know it's hard to talk about and feeling distanced from an artist with such meaning to you is a specific ache. the only advice i can give you is to step back however you need to, for however long you need to. whether you feel comfortable still holding onto her music but separating from her personally (and/or from tour), or whether you need space from all of it for a while, remember that it's always going to be there, and you can always come back. in the meantime, you can also turn to places and artists that are continuing to give you comfort (like harry, and i'm so glad he is that for you).
for what it's worth, i love you and i know your identity is worthwhile, and YOU are worthwhile, and you deserve to feel safe and embraced and seen. anywhere you go, you don't need a reason. 💛💛💛
#anonymous#letterbox#your delicate point of view#ngl i wish this. was not what it is.#but unfortunately all we can do is deal however we're individually comfortable dealing#and hold onto the good however we can

Breaking Free from "A Sense of Impending Doom or Danger" with Anxiovita
Have you ever experienced that unsettling feeling that something bad is about to happen, even when there’s no obvious reason for concern? This sensation, known as "a sense of impending doom or danger," is more common than you might think. Whether it’s a vague worry or a full-blown panic attack, this feeling can be overwhelming and distressing. Fortunately, solutions are available to help manage these intense emotions, and one of those solutions is Anxiovita. In this blog, we will explore what causes this feeling, why it occurs, and how Anxiovita can be a beneficial tool in helping you regain control of your emotions and well-being.
What is a Sense of Impending Doom or Danger?
"A sense of impending doom or danger" is a psychological experience where an individual feels that something disastrous or harmful is going to occur, even without any clear or immediate threat. This sense of foreboding can be accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, or even nausea. It’s not always tied to a specific situation but rather an overwhelming feeling that something terrible is lurking just around the corner.
While this feeling can sometimes be fleeting and relatively mild, for many people, it can become a chronic and deeply distressing experience. This sensation can often be linked to anxiety disorders, panic attacks, stress, or trauma, but it is also a natural response to stressors in daily life.
Causes of a Sense of Impending Doom or Danger
Several factors contribute to the feeling of impending doom, ranging from psychological to physical conditions. Some common causes include:
Anxiety and Panic Disorders A common trigger for this feeling is anxiety. When someone experiences heightened levels of anxiety, their brain becomes hyper-alert to potential threats. This often results in the feeling that something terrible is imminent, even if there's no logical reason for it. Panic attacks, in particular, can trigger overwhelming feelings of doom.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Individuals who have experienced trauma may experience a constant sense of danger due to heightened stress responses. For those with PTSD, the brain may be stuck in a state of "fight or flight," making even ordinary situations feel threatening.
Stress and Overwork Chronic stress, especially when coupled with fatigue or burnout, can lead to emotional and physical reactions that heighten feelings of danger. Overwhelming work or personal responsibilities can drain mental resources, leading to anxiety and a sense of dread.
Substance Abuse or Withdrawal Certain substances, including alcohol, drugs, and even caffeine, can contribute to feelings of anxiety or doom. Substance abuse may alter brain chemistry, making the individual more susceptible to intense feelings of fear or danger.
Medical Conditions There are also certain medical conditions that can contribute to feelings of impending doom, such as heart conditions, thyroid imbalances, and respiratory issues. These conditions may cause physical symptoms (like shortness of breath or chest pain) that can trigger a psychological response of fear or anxiety.

I’m sure you feel like this too… like everything and absolutely nothing is happening in life for you at the same time… at least a little bit, right?
I was advised against, and actually completely disregarded for two jobs this year - two positions of which I would have made an undeniable impact in. The reason - (the one that was communicated, anyway) my gender.
Is it the perception of softness, the presence of it, or the fear of platonic work environments being charged with bright, fluent female energy?
Or maybe they actually believe my gender equates to lack of intelligence or sternness in places it’s necessary?
If they only knew how much strength it took to be this soft, how much control and discipline it took to keep my eyes focused on the impact when people completely unfamiliar with my work had the nerve to judge my abilities before a handshake.
Young is not inexperienced or unequipped.
Female is not weak or naive.
The combination of things I am though? It’s creative, empathetic, deeply understanding, and undeniably persistent even under the pressures of pessimism.
In retrospect, it wasn’t my character that’s a risk, it was theirs and their own lack of discipline in places of intrigue.
The opposite side of all of this though? I’m bypassing positions that some have had to endure to open up doors to a succinct career. I can only imagine how unsettling it will be to wake up and see the very thing you wished to displace at the very top.

Blog Post #6
We've examined Black Horror this semester in ways I hadn't previously considered. I had a basic understanding of the genre going in, but I was unaware of how serious and intricate these works are in addressing trauma, identity, and social issues. Movies like The Blackening and Get Out caught my attention because they successfully combine humor and horror, revealing some unsettling realities about American racism while still being enjoyable. I simultaneously found myself laughing, squirming, and reflecting deeply.
For me, Get Out in particular was enlightening. Even though I had seen it before, I was able to appreciate its subtleties in a different way once we discussed it in class. I thought about times when I or people I know felt confined or unheard since the buried region is a terrible metaphor for the disempowerment and suppression of Black voices. The thing that shocked me most of all was that the horror elements in Get Out are not just made-up horrors; rather, they are representations of actual fears and concerns that Black people face every day. I was more alarmed by the covert racism, microaggressions, and underlying danger of violence than I was by the overt horror elements.
The Blackening, on the contrary, offered something fresh. It reversed the conventional horror trope that the Black character dies first. My favorite parts of this movie were its humor and unabashed appreciation of Black culture while analyzing it in a lighthearted, self-aware manner. It brought to mind conversations with my friends when we make light of the problems we face and laugh about stereotypes, even though we know how serious these difficulties are. I related to the idea that there isn't "one way" to be Black, particularly in a culture where people are quick to assign labels based on flimsy presumptions.
I was also deeply impacted by the short story The Keeper. The portrayal of a little child coping with trauma and the ethereal elements that represent her struggles resonated deeply. It got me to thinking about how, like ghosts or devils, past experiences may haunt us. I often felt pressured as a child to be tough and self-sufficient, even to the point of ignoring my own need for protection and care. My realization of how terror may convey unstated fears and emotions came from seeing similar themes reflected in The Keeper.
I had a personal experience as a child that brought up memories of great works of art. At my mostly white school, I had feelings of alienation on occasion due to my nationality. There were moments when I wanted someone or something to shield me and give me courage, just like the character in The Keeper. I learned from this course that these emotions are not exclusive; rather, they are a part of a collective experience that Black Horror embraces and encourages.
All things considered, I've come to appreciate Black Horror as a genre as well as a tool for social criticism and contemplation. Not only are the stories we've read meant to shock, but they also reveal more profound realities about one's identity, the world, and surviving. They inspire and educate while giving voice to very real concerns. I'm glad I took this class, and I'm leaving with a new understanding of terror and the value of exchanging diverse perspectives.

* Seraphina | Headcanon.
When Malphas uses Seraphina to speak outwardly, the resulting voice is an unnerving blend of multiple overlapping voices, creating a cacophony that chills the listener to the core.
Malphas’s Voice:
Tone: Malphas’s voice isn’t just one voice but a discordant chorus of many, layered on top of each other. Some are deep and resonant, others are high-pitched and shrill, each one speaking slightly out of sync with the others. This creates a jarring, chaotic sound that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
Texture: The overlapping voices create a texture that is both dense and fragmented, like whispers in the dark mixed with the distant echoes of screams. It’s as if countless beings are all trying to speak through the same mouth, each vying for dominance, resulting in a disjointed and unsettling auditory experience.
Volume: The voices shift in volume unpredictably—some murmuring just beneath the surface, others booming out with a force that seems to shake the very air. This fluctuation adds to the disorientation, making it hard to focus on any one voice or understand the full meaning of the words being spoken.
Seraphina’s Voice:
Tone: Seraphina’s voice remains haunting and melodic, but now it is laced with a strained, almost desperate quality. Her speech is more fragmented, as if she’s struggling to maintain control, her words slipping in and out between the cacophony of Malphas’s many voices.
Duality: The dual-tone effect of her voice combined with Malphas’s creates an eerie, dissonant harmony. Seraphina’s calm, controlled speech is constantly undercut by the chaotic overlay of Malphas’s voices, making her sound both familiar and alien at the same time.
Echo: Each word she speaks is followed by an overlapping echo, where Malphas’s voices seem to mock or distort her words, twisting them into something darker. This echo gives the impression that Malphas is constantly trying to drown out her voice, pulling her further into the abyss of his influence.
When Malphas speaks through Seraphina, the combination of her singular voice with his multitude of overlapping tones creates a deeply unsettling experience. The many voices that make up Malphas seem to tug at the listener’s sanity, each one carrying a different emotional weight—fear, anger, sorrow—all clashing together in a discordant symphony.
This vocal amalgamation makes it feel as though the air around them is vibrating with tension, as if the voices are pressing in from all sides. The effect is profoundly disorienting, leaving those who hear it with a sense of creeping dread and the uneasy realization that they are not just dealing with one entity, but many—a host of ancient and malevolent beings all vying for control over Seraphina, and by extension, anyone who dares to oppose her.

Further Research Notes
From various sources about Horror Games.
The State of Indie Horror Games... by The StellarJay on Youtube 27th July 2023. (the first 3 mins because the rest of the video it says everything wrong with a certain type of indie horror game)
The first type of fear in horror games are ones that attack your mind in a way to create suspense. Through creepy graphics and cryptic messages that force your mind to fill in the gaps around the monsters you see. That once you know threats could be anywhere you're afraid that they could be everywhere, hence tricking your mind and making think things or believe things are there when they aren't.
This is similar to the concept of, in any horror media, that hiding the threat has a stronger effect than showing it. Because your mind creates the image of monsters/threats more scarier than they actually are. It take the fear of the unknown
Faith (Airdorf Games 4th October 2017) brings a haunting religious melody played throughout the gameplay. In an 8-bit style sound, that instantly seems "off" or creepy in the way it feels unfinished and broken down, with scratchy tones to it as it originates from old retro video games. Plus the sound effects are garbled in this style also, making the game feel immensely scarier as it so unnatural hearing that we could discern any of it really. This game also uses the power of silence to build suspense to the gameplay. So it not only attacks your mind about the threats of the game, it also attacks your senses, your hearing to create fear.
How Audio Creates Horror: The Heilwald Loophole by Pastra on Youtube 4th September 2022 most of which was an analysis on the game itself, but i picked out key points that they brought up that are effective in sound horror.
Juxtaposition is very effective in horror media. When sound effects and music juxtapose one another, or the the soundscape as a whole juxtaposing the visuals making it more creepy and seeming "off". It is the combination of seemingly harmless music with a hostile environment creates a unique eeriness where it is known there is a threat present but the music makes it so that the nature of it is incomprehensible. It doesn't bring so much terror to the scene when contrasts like this are used, but they are still effective when it comes to unnerving the situation making the setting and surroundings seem uncomfortable.
My thoughts: This can link to The Complex: Found footage (IsarL, pgWave 18 August 2022) A backrooms inspired game. That when you reach the mall section in the backrooms, music starts to play when we were so used to low ambience previously. This music seemingly harmless, slightly distorted as if aged over time and as if it had continuously has been playing in this area. Oldies genre of 40s or 50s style. Genuinely positive, end-of-war era sounding, consisting of brass and wind instruments. But juxtaposing a lifeless and eery setting, the contrast is perfect to create an uneasy horror atmosphere, just like the author noted.
It is noted that when audio is as loud and overwhelming as possible, is equally as unsettling for the player. It suggests that danger is coming their way no matter where you are and cause an unending feeling of pure unbridled panic - especially with anyone who can get overstimulated and overwhelmed with too much audio or surrounding in general. It places the game in a deeply distressing atmosphere also, if done correctly and not to actually upset the player or harm them irl, but in gameplay terms.
Sound design can make or break a horror experience, even though visuals and graphics play a good part too, the sound design works to elevate a more terrifying experience especially through the emotional side to the game.

Week 9 my guysssss
It do be time for another blog, semester is going pretty good surprisingly, grades are thriving as well as they can be.
Now when it comes to me thriving might be an understatement but between working and paying rent it to be a struggle. But that's okay!
To what the main point of this is, my project for my WRD class, aka the whole reason I even have this account. Included in this weeks blog will be my podcast proposal and annotated bibliography. So here it is besties!!!
My podcast will be titled “Campus Chronicles” I will cover the many issues currently happening on campus right now. From parking, housing to the many, many protest we’ve all experienced at least once.
I plan to use an audio recording for this podcast, possibly doing it in multiple parts of the different topics split into different “chapters”.
Many students are struggling to find rooms due to everything being changed over besides one dorm. For many college students, campus housing is an integral part of their higher education journey. It offers the convenience of living close to classes, fellow students, and campus resources. However, as the first taste of independent living for many, campus housing isn't always the idyllic experience it's imagined to be.
Inadequate parking on a college campus is a recurring source of frustration and inconvenience for both students and faculty. The limited availability of parking spaces, combined with the often questionable parking skills of some individuals, can turn the simple act of parking into a major headache.
For those who must endure the daily struggle of finding a parking spot on a crowded campus, it can be a significant source of stress. Late arrivals to classes or work due to parking woes can impact academic performance and productivity. It's not uncommon for students to circle the lots for extended periods, hoping to spot a rare vacant space, which can be a time-consuming and energy-draining task.
While college campuses are often seen as places of diversity, inclusion, and free expression, they can also be venues for anti-LGBTQ+ protests that promote discrimination and intolerance. These events can be deeply unsettling and have wide-ranging consequences for the campus community. These events can lead to Emotional and Psychological Impact, feelings of isolation and fear among LGBTQ+ students, who may worry about their safety and well-being on campus . As well as bringing a ton of stress and anxiety.
The podcast delves into the frustration students often face when trying to find parking spots on campus. Not only can it be a daily battle, but it's also costly. The prioritization of generating revenue over ensuring the convenience and well-being of their students. It prompts us to question whether financial gains should take precedence over accessibility and the overall quality of the educational experience.
Overcrowded housing is the second issue discussed. Many students are forced to live in overcrowded, inadequate conditions due to high rent prices and a lack of available housing. This housing crisis highlights economic disparities within the education system, as marginalized students often bear the brunt of these challenges. The core message here is that we urgently need affordable and equitable housing solutions to ensure that the pursuit of higher education is not compromised by living conditions.
The third element of the podcast's message revolves around LGBTQ protests on college campuses. These protests represent the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance, emphasizing the importance of safe spaces and inclusivity for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. They deliver a compelling message about the need to respect diversity and support the rights of individuals to express their identity without fear of discrimination.
In summary, this podcast effectively weaves together the issues of college parking, overcrowded housing, and LGBTQ protests to deliver a powerful message: the education system requires reform. It encourages listeners to think about the broader implications of these issues and to stand up for a more inclusive, affordable, and equitable educational environment that benefits all students. It's a call to action for positive change in colleges and universities.
The podcast's multifaceted discussion not only offers a unique insight into the intricacies of college life but also provides a broader perspective on the complexities within higher education and social justice. College students are at the forefront of the intended audience, given their direct connection to the topics explored. They can identify with the daily battles for parking spaces, the housing challenges, and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ rights on campuses, making this podcast an engaging and relatable resource for them.
Parents of college students are another vital audience segment. As they navigate the challenges of sending their children to college or supporting them through their higher education journey, the podcast equips them with a better understanding of the hurdles and concerns their children might face, from housing difficulties to social justice issues.
Educators and college staff members are also among the key target audience. By engaging with this content, they can gain valuable insights into the lived experiences of students, which can inform their teaching and administrative roles. Understanding the pressing issues faced by students enables educators and staff to be more empathetic and responsive to their needs.
Higher education policymakers hold an essential role in shaping the landscape of colleges and universities. This podcast serves as an educational tool, providing a detailed view of the challenges students encounter daily. Policymakers can use this insight to inform their decisions, potentially leading to systemic improvements that benefit both students and institutions.
Furthermore, advocacy and social justice groups, especially those advocating for LGBTQ rights and affordable housing for students, will find the podcast as an informative resource. It aligns with their missions and provides a platform for raising awareness and sparking important conversations.
For a broader audience interested in social issues, inclusivity, and the state of the education system, this podcast offers a thought-provoking exploration of the intricacies of higher education and its connection to social justice. It encourages critical thinking about the roles and responsibilities of educational institutions in addressing these matters.
Lastly, community leaders invested in the welfare of students within their regions can gain valuable insights from this podcast. It equips them with a more comprehensive understanding of the conditions and opportunities available to students in their communities, potentially motivating positive changes at a local level.
To effectively engage with these diverse target audiences, tailoring promotion, content, and messaging to resonate with their specific interests and concerns is of paramount importance. The podcast's ability to appeal to such a wide spectrum of listeners underscores its significance in addressing the multifaceted challenges within higher education and social justice.
Your podcast is poised to connect with your audience for several compelling reasons. Firstly, it addresses issues that are highly relatable and impactful for your target audience, which includes college students, parents, educators, policymakers, advocacy groups, and the general public interested in social issues. These topics are not only pertinent but also have a direct bearing on the everyday lives of many individuals. Listeners can connect with the content on a personal level, as they likely have experienced or are concerned about college parking, overcrowded housing, and LGBTQ rights on campus.
My podcast's power lies in its ability to bridge the gap between these seemingly disparate issues, illuminating the common thread of systemic challenges within higher education. This holistic approach offers a comprehensive view of the issues, providing valuable context and insights that can resonate with a wide array of listeners. It helps them connect the dots between different aspects of college life and recognize the broader implications and interconnectedness of these challenges.
Additionally, the podcast encourages critical thinking and constructive dialogue. It prompts listeners to reflect on the state of higher education, question the status quo, and contemplate potential solutions. This call to action can create a sense of shared purpose among your audience, fostering a community of individuals who care about making positive changes within the education system.
Furthermore, the diversity of perspectives featured in the podcast, including student experiences, expert insights, and the voices of advocacy groups, enriches the content and ensures that your audience receives a well-rounded view of the issues discussed. This inclusivity helps your podcast appeal to a broader range of listeners with varying backgrounds and interests.
In summary, my podcast's ability to relate to the real-life concerns of your audience, its comprehensive approach to interconnected issues, and its capacity to foster critical thinking and community engagement will all contribute to its success in connecting with your target audience. It has the potential to inspire, inform, and empower listeners, making it a compelling platform for discussing and addressing the challenges within higher education and social justice.
“It is a tale as old as cars: everybody complains about parking. Every few years, an article in the Charger Bulletin surfaces about how bad parking is at the University of New Haven.” (https://chargerbulletin.com/the-historically-bad-parking-on-campus-keeps-getting-worse/) Parking isn’t only bad on our campus, It’s an issue on many MANY other campuses. This article covers the difficulties that students run into when it comes to parking and how it builds onto the many other issues students already face when it comes to being in college. Campus parking has been an issue for way longer than it should, with so many complaints and many many parking tickets given out you would think that something would be done by now to help students be able to have a safe and open spot to park.
“Where college students used to fear a budget-friendly ramen noodle diet, now 1 in 5 students have dealt with housing insecurity, according to a recent survey from student loyalty network, Student Beans. The company defines housing insecurity as someone who “finds themselves without a permanent place of residence while studying.” (https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/30/20percent-of-college-students-struggle-to-find-stable-housing.html) Between financially not being able to afford it and now the fact that its next to impossible to even get into a dorm students are worrying more about where to stay then worrying about the degree itself. Students shouldn’t have to worry about being able to eat every day or affording to live on campus and having to live over 15mins off campus by bike (Myself included). It’s not easy at all just to be able to go to a college of the students choice. When housing becomes harder than the classes and keeping a good grade that’s when its really an issue. UK has built new building after new building but none of them have been new dorms to support and house the many MANY freshman coming in because of the 98% acceptance rate which in itself is crazy.
“They held a sign that read “HOMO SEX IS SIN” on one side and “LIVE HOLY OR HELLFIRE” on the other while preaching their anti-LGBTQ religious beliefs to passersby for more than four hours.” (https://kykernel.com/93556/news/anti-lgbtq-evangelists-spark-controversy-on-campus/) LQBTQ+ protests are also affecting students freedom to be who they are without being beyond judged for being who they are. Students come to a campus expecting to be able to be themselves. Being LGBTQ+ friendly is a big thing that UK advertises. Yet students can’t even do so without being yelled at and targeted by protesters just for what they choose to wear.
I plan to use those same sources I used in this essay as well as others in my podcast. I figured laying out what I want to do now while using the same sources will help it be easier for me In the long run.

The Magnus Archives Relisten: Episode 177 - Wonderland
Jon: When did I become everybody’s satnav?
Hasn't he also complained about being used as the supernatural Google before? Jon, I think you're just everyone's entire smartphone at this point. You even do entertaining little podcast segments about local sights!
Martin: What? No, no, that can’t be right. I thought people weren’t even allowed to die any more.
I mean, that's not strictly true, though, is it? Didn't Oliver Banks explicitly say that the End can't exist as a fear without death remaining real? And really, there's no particular reason why "some people can still die" would only be true in that particular domain...
Martin: He needs to make a statement. Basira: Is that like a euphemism or…? Okay, this is getting very silly, but also I still sniggered.
Hi. How are we doing? - Jon's statement
Oh, the doctor's 'we' is a beautiful touch. So wonderfully condescending, immediately made me feel trapped (and why the FUCK do doctors irl keep doing that anyway? I've never had a doctor who used the 'medical we' who turned out to be any good!)
Well, I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree with you there. That’s not your name at all. Now don’t get agitated, I’m sure we’ll get there.
Oh, and that. That hurts! "No, you're crazy, so you no longer get to decide anything about yourself, not even your very identity. And if that upsets you, that's just another sign of your illness". The ripping away of any autonomy. Yeah, no, that's suitably nightmarish. (You could also read this from a transphobia angle, couldn't you?)
I’m here to help you, to treat you, to make it so you’re less of a… burden to everyone.
AAAAAH!
Jon: Satisfied? Basira: Fuck.
Just, Basira's delivery here. This is the most matter-of-fact way you could possibly say "Fuck".
Jon: It’s sort of, like… gaslighting, but in reverse. This place, it’s built on the fear that your mental health problems aren’t actually real. (...) Bad therapists. Let’s just say it’s the fear of bad therapists, filtered through The Spiral.
Okay, Johny, just, why this? Who in the audience needed the explanatory notes??? Trust your audience to do basic media interpretation. You have so far!
Jon: What, you think he ended up in Wonderland House at random? We’re just going to ignore it, and write him off as a ‘nasty piece of work’? Basira: We don’t have time for this.
It's the fucking apocalypse, you're literally on your way to KILL Daisy because she didn't want to live as a monster, and you still won't even stop to consider that her victims might not have DESERVED the monstrous shit she's done to them? Denial sure runs deep...
Jon: Then we should make time. You want to hear how he ended up blinding that man? Because it wasn’t a robbery. He was running away from Daisy, lashing out in a panic. The court believed it. But you believed her…
Oh, now that's a gut-punch of a revelation if I've ever seen one!
Helen: Not to sound like a squeaky hinge...
... a door metaphor? Really? Pffffft!
My impression of this episode
This episode has some genuinely terrifying moments. The concept of "Let's take the worst parts of the medical / mental health care system and say the quiet parts out loud, then combine that with the worst things your brain tells you" is perhaps a bit on the nose, but also genuinely, deeply, nauseatingly unsettling. This episode just kind of ruins itself by then proceeding to explain the point (which was already pretty obvious) in detail. Just ... there are a lot of episodes that I don't personally connect with, but TMA very rarely makes decisions that I would call "bad writing". Unfortunately this is one of them. YOU HAD A GOOD (and horrifying) THING GOING THERE! Mind, that's still not enough to ruin the whole episode for me, particularly not when that "And now for those in the audience who weren't paying attention" bit is immediately followed by a genuinely hard-hitting conversation about Basira and Daisy.

Standards of Beauty (and Ugliness) in African Art
African art has a unique quality and aesthetic that makes every piece a valuable addition to any collection. African figurines, for example, can serve as captivating decorations that imbue a space with distinctive character. However, people's perspectives on these works of art can vary due to differing standards of beauty, influenced by their cultural background. For those open to appreciating art beyond their own norms, it's helpful to understand what beauty and ugliness mean in the context of African art.
The role of religion and spirituality
African art is not solely an expression of an artist’s creativity; it serves functional and spiritual purposes deeply ingrained in the community's well-being and survival. For instance, many works are believed to protect the community by guarding ancestral remains or warding off harmful spirits.
Art pieces that focus on male beauty serve another layer of function: they symbolize religious or political authority. Consequently, these are commonly found on altars as talismans against both metaphysical and physical threats.
Concept of beauty from an African lens
Western concepts of beauty can differ significantly from those of Sub-Saharan communities. African art often portrays masculinity through African figurines featuring muscular, youthful bodies with large hands and feet. These physical traits are associated with fieldwork, hunting, and carrying heavy burdens, while youthfulness is linked to good health and fertility.
Feminine beauty in African art is often characterized by voluptuous figures with rounded hips, a large belly, and ample buttocks. These features symbolize maternal strength and fertility. Female figures also usually come adorned with elaborate jewelry and intricate hairstyles, markers of beauty and high social status in many African societies.
Scarification and the pursuit of smooth skin
Scarification is a common practice among many African cultures, involving the creation of patterns or designs on the skin through cutting or branding. Especially for women, facial scarification is considered an enhancement of beauty.
Smooth skin is another widely accepted standard of beauty in African art and cultures. Therefore, African figurines and sculptures are often polished to a glossy finish using stones or leaves. This smooth surface is not just a sign of physical beauty but also a metaphor for harmonious social relations. Conversely, rough and coarse textures are generally considered unattractive.
The notion of ugliness in African art
In the context of African art, ugliness is often linked to natural elements like animals and wilderness, whereas beauty is associated with human society, including communities and villages. Figurines are sometimes crafted to attract spirits, preventing them from causing illness or misfortune. These art pieces serve as vessels for these spirits, who are then appeased through offerings.
Ugliness in African art isn't always negative; it can also evoke powerful emotions like fear and awe, which in turn command authority and power. Some artworks intentionally combine elements of both beauty and ugliness to captivate and unsettle the viewer. Besides that, beauty and ugliness are subjective and in the eye of the beholder and informed by the beholder’s disposition.

A Caregiver
Bloggers, here, at Tumblr, will not be surprised when I say that I frequently 'free associate,' whenever I'm out and about in my part of New York City.
About a month ago, on a weekday, inside one of my usual places where I do business, an adult male customer's T-shirt got my attention. The T-shirt was colored black and, on the reverse side (the man's back), there were small white letters spelling out the following words: 'pain is weakness leaving the body.'
From talking to the customer, I learned that what I read on his T-shirt is a motto of the U. S. Marines.
As I continued with my daily chores, I thought about whether that motto might help someone who is being tortured. I made a mental note to read about Thomas Edward Lawrence who became world famous as Lawrence of Arabia. While helping the tribes loyal to the Saud family, Mr. Lawrence was captured and tortured by Turkish forces.
I'm guessing that individuals who practice yoga and meditation would say that a person can, in fact, train themselves to not be affected by torture; i.e., the pain inflicted would not become a reason for giving up one's loyalty to a particular cause in a war.
Now, it's nice to think about this, but I don't expect to be joining any armed forces, in the U.S., any time soon (I'm saying this to put myself in an optimistic frame of mind, because I don't want there to be a civil war in the U.S.).
On that fair weather weekday, I enjoyed thinking about the motto on the T-shirt and the subject of torture, when I was out and about. I thought about it, as I observed other New Yorkers going about their business. I did this for awhile. And then I reminded myself as to where I was: in a major international city, in a place where many people get shot, etc. And a new subject came to mind: fear, being frightened.
Every weekend, here, in New York City, a list of shootings is compiled. I am careful about where I travel to and when I travel.
Do people in New York City try to find movies that frighten them? I don't.
Every now and then, I find a movie that presents violent situations and actions that, clearly, are meant to shock the viewer, to frighten anyone watching. When I find such a movie, I decide that I have to describe the plot for a potential piece at this blog. The movie that I watched the other day is an example of what I'm talking about.
As with other movies that I have described, here, at Tumblr, the way that this one is scripted and directed presents numerous details of the central character's personality. These details, plus information about where the plot plays out, combine in a way that is troubling and unsettling...
An emaciated looking woman named Marian, approximately 35 years old, works as a Nurse in an unnamed hospital somewhere in the Netherlands. The floor of the hospital that Marian works on has patients who all seem to be terminally ill. As such, it follows that, in any given work week, one of the patients on that floor might die.
One of the first scenes of this movie presents Marian and another Nurse tending to a patient who has just been pronounced dead. The audience watches the procedures involved in preparing the patient for transportation, presumably to a morgue.
In the same scene, Marian surreptitiously takes a small pencil that the patient had kept in a table's drawer, next to his bed, and puts it in her pocket.
It takes a while for the viewer to get his or her bearings regarding what exactly is going on. Marian seems to be dealing with some traumatic event from her past that has affected her so deeply that, even on the job, she does not seem to be 'all there.' She goes to work, does her work, goes home, but something is missing...something that is never explained.
About half-way in the movie, something happens that knocks Marian for a loop. It's actually two something's. She witnesses an absolutely horrific crime that takes place in an area adjacent to her building. She, then, learns that she has been observed witnessing the horrific event by another of the building's tenants -- an individual who bothered her in an earlier scene.
Are there any law enforcement characters in this movie? There are none.
The core concept of the script is paranoia. People are so cut off and separate from one another that daily life takes on the quality of a continuous nightmare.
The name of the movie is CODE BLUE (2011), with a running time of 81 minutes, that did not play in theaters in the U.S.
I'm being deliberately sketchy about the details regarding Marian's personality and where the plot plays out. It's a truly frightening movie, one that I do not recommend to people who I do not know. It's available on DVD with English subtitles and, presumably, is available at a screening service.
