The Artazon Open Crafts Festival's debut has a raffle winner facing off against Champion Nemona. Nemona is more than happy to show her battling skills to her Alolan opponent. It's Tauros vs Palossand! How will Nemona deal with the disadvantage?
Excerpt:
The Artazon Gym Battle Arena was surrounded, a crowd packed in its cramped space, with a few RotomPhones hovering overheard to record the action about the take place. The smells of wood and pollen were potent as a breeze swept through the town, caressing it ornate windmill, causing it to creak along in rotation, waving everyone on to gather for the fight about to commence. “All right, then, Percival... Nemona clenched her fist, putting her ball back onto her belt and lowering her head with dramatic flair for the audience – though Penny knew she would be doing the same if literally no one else was watching, the big goof. She suddenly thrust out her hands in her trademark ready pose, shouting, “Let's have us an awesome, fruitful battle, shall we?!” As always, Nemona's well-worn catchphrase had spectators igniting into applause and cheers as the battle commenced. - FWEEEEEEEEEETTT! - The ear-rattling cry of Nemona's whistle signaled the start of the match. “Sloopy,” cried Percival, “Fortify yourself with 'Iron Defense!'” The black sands of the ghost inhabiting a sandcastle quivered and shifted, a dark energy solidifying them and expanding the grains with a silvery black sheen at its front side. Nemona, her face stoic and neutral, lifted her whistle back up to her lips again, and tooted out a command. - fweet-fweet, FWEEET! - With a steamy puff of hot air from his flared nostrils, her Tauros, Cuernogran, clopped and stamped in place, trotting with enthusiastic anger – he was getting 'Worked Up.' Percival seemed a bit surprised, and slightly off-put by Nemona's lack of words and matching lack of visible emotion. She could get pretty poker-faced when it came to serious battles, having spent a great deal of time over the years learning to keep her emotions in check thanks to Bea's harsh training. Penny was sure that by the time the fight was over, her girlfriend would at least flash a trademark 'Got ya' smirk, which was a moment that always made Penny swoon. This matchup was definitely stacked against a Combat Breed Tauros. Cuernogran was a beast of a fighter at physical combat, arguably Nemona's heaviest raw strength hitter. Against a Ghost Type, that didn't mean very much, perhaps. But Penny was certain Nemona had already cooked up a plan... Percival stroked his facial hair for a moment before addressing his Palossand: “Trap 'em in your 'Sand Tomb!'” Nemona's whistle replied: - FWEEET!... fweet! - The Tauros kept his eyes on his opponent, assuming a defensive stance as two waves of black sand swiftly slid across the floor of the arena, surrounding him from all sides. The sands glimmered eerily with ghostly purple twinkles in the late afternoon sun. As the sands sharply rose, Nemona made her next command, one simple: - fweeet!- It seemed the first whistle had signified the move to be used, while the second indicated when exactly to initiate.

★This is an elimination round for a larger poll! Choose your favorite to move on to the bracket rounds!★
(yes these are technically 3 different pokémon! They don't change form depending on anything (like say castform does) this is just how they are! Which one is your favorite?)

Paldean Tauros - a large herbivores native to Paldea. They're usually called the "Combat/Aqua/Blaze breed". These "breeds" are the result of an isolation that took place many thousands of years ago, splitting the Tauros population in half.
Aqua breed appeared due to speciation which happened after isolation. Due to the numerous lakes and rivers Aqua breed adapted to live in them, feeding on aquatic plants. They are the calmest of all Paldean Tauros, almost like their cousin, Miltank.
Blaze breed, found in the warm areas of western Paldea, they have sharp horns that, according to beliefs, can pierce even steel. They have a very interesting tail, which, unlike that of any other Tauros, is curled into the shape of a spring; the reason for this is unknown.
Combat breed, found mainly on the eastern side of Paldea, is the most aggressive, perhaps even more than Kantonian Tauros in Galar, often using its horns to fight with other members of herd.

#128. Tauros (Paldean)
This kind of Tauros, known as the Combat Breed, is distinguished by its thick, powerful muscles and its fierce disposition.
Colour and symbol charts can be found here.
This sprite was designed by Ezerart! Permission has been kindly granted for its use.
A note on colours: in my experience, floss looks different irl than in online pattern makers. If you think a different colour will work better, go with your gut!

Bovid Pokemon Headcanons
Even in the wild Miltank are known for issues with hoof overgrowth, especially at young ages. Their learning of the move Rollout so young alongside their rambunctious natures means they often find themselves moving more via rolling than walking, and their propensity for bipedal stances leads to lessened wear on their forehooves. To manage this, wild Miltank have evolved over time to seek out stony areas when they struggle with walking, within which they'll rampage with as much vigor as their distant cousins Tauros and Bouffalant. Though it's recommended farmers provide stone or concrete pads for this purpose themselves, just in case, more important for Miltank owners is keeping careful track of their pokemon's hooves, as these natural behaviors can worsen other hoof problems.
Though often found in the same areas most farmers don't breed their Miltank to Tauros. Instead popular matches include Quagsire, Gogoat, Stoutland, and Mudsdale, chosen most often to promote calmer natures.
While Miltank and Tauros are related, this is a more distant connection than often assumed. The ancestors of modern Miltank split away from the evolutionary path that would lead to Tauros long, long ago, even before what would become the Dubwool and Gogoat lines split off. Tauros is actually closest related to Bouffalant out of known extant pokemon.
Where the Ampharos line falls in all this is hotly debated to this day. Popular theories include- 1) That the line split off prior to Miltank, representing a more basal form of the whole family. 2) That it split apart with Dubwool and Gogoat, then split from them prior to them splitting from each other. 3) Ampharos are actually the closest living relatives to Miltank, splitting off from them post their split from the rest of the family.
More fringe theories remove Ampharos from the family entirely, claiming it might be the closest surviving relative of the Hydreigon line, while a similar fringe theory classes it as the only extant member of a theorized ancient Electric/Dragon lineage. Believers claim the recent discovery of what some consider an ancient ancestor to Raikou supports this theory, but no accredited sources have yet backed this claim.
Whimsicott, despite what some believe, are not actually related to any of the above. The latest evidence suggests their nearest relatives are the Wigglytuff line of all pokemon, despite them having historically been placed alongside the Lilligant line.
Most Tauros in captivity are shod, as their high activity lives as work or battling pokemon wear down their hooves more quickly than they would in the wild. Blaze Breed Tauros have softer hooves than other Tauros and so are more prone to bruising, though for the same reason less prone to cracks in their hoof wall. Aqua Breed are known to have the fewest hoof problems out of the species.
Female Tauros, rarely seen in captivity due to their high levels of aggression even compared to male Tauros, are visually distinct from the males, being notably larger, with a thicker layer of fat and their forehead beads expanded into proper plates. Wild Tauros herds are often led by the females as a result.
Owners are recommended to get their Tauros and Bouffalant's hooves checked once a month, as these pokemon's aggression leads to a higher risk of damage. Miltank and Dubwool can go up to two months if watched and with low activity, while Gogoat can go as long as six months between checks (though Gogoat used for transportation are suggested to be shod and checked more frequently). Owners of Ampharos are suggested to get them checked at least once a year.
In an amusing coincidence, while Tauros and Gogoat both determine hierarchy within their herds head-to-head combat, Bouffalant and Dubwool both determine social status by fur thickness. In fact, outside of trainer battles one will rarely see members of these species fighting amongst themselves.
Tauros, Bouffalant, Dubwool, and Gogoat all will lose their hair when under heightened stress, though Bouffalant seem to be the most susceptible of the four. This is currently thought, though not proven, to be a holdover from an common ancestor who, like the Ampharos line, lost it's fur as it evolved.
Bouffalant are believed to play an important role in building and maintaining their grassland and forest environments, as their constant headbutting of their surroundings- done seemingly to mark their territory via the loud sound of their horns making impact- clears weak and dead trees from woodlands and stymies tree growth in grasslands.
The most common cause of Pokemon Center visits in Bouffalant calves is concussions from hitting targets their thin young manes can't shield against. Their amazing ability to recover from these injuries is currently being studied.
Skiddo make the top ten most commonly kept pokemon in rural areas due to their ease of care, calm and affectionate dispositions, and usefulness in milk production. Gogoat, meanwhile, aren't included in their placement due to being kept more often as a work or produce pokemon than as a pet like Skiddo can be found. In fact, in the Kalos region, Skiddo are the second most popular pet pokemon after Snubbull.
Though commonly thought of as unintelligent, Dubwool have been proven to have truly exceptional memories. For example, in a study released eight years ago twenty-six out of thirty Dubwool were found not only to recognize at least one individual they had met for approximately fifteen minutes over a decade before but to remember whether their interaction had been a positive or negative one.
Between the commonality of Thievul in their native range and their high sociality, Dubwool nest in large groups and brood over their eggs, laying low overtop of them so they can be shielded with their wool. In herds where the leader is female, the entire population can be found during nesting season forming what appears to be a solid field of wool laid out on the ground. As a result of this behavior, Wooloo eggs have been found to have the highest tolerance for heat out of any non-fire- or rock-type pokemon line.

Happy biorth.
Tell me, what is your favorite regional form?
thanks! it might seem very simplistic, but the paldean tauros is, to me, a total game changer in relation to pokemon variations
allow me to explain: in Paldea, tauros has 3 forms
The combat breed, the blaze breed and the aqua breed.
They are considered to be different from each other enough to be called a breed but they aren't different enough to be considered a different evolution, regional form or pokemon.
This is big for me because it proves that pokemon can, canonically, have subspecies and breeds just like real world domestic animals!!!! like a dog can have breeds like dalmatian or chihuahua, a pokemom like tauros can have different breeds and still be considered the same!!!!

❛ you don’t know when to give up, do you? ❜
𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐌 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐔𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐒
" And I thought you knew me better by now! "
A stubborn Tauros met by a just as stubborn professor battered, bruised, dusty but still grinning ear to ear. The Paldean bull behind them snorted in annoyance after having thrown the man nearly a dozen times for venturing too close.
" Listen! The Combat breed of Tauros are amazing! Ive been bucked who knows how many times by your normal bull but these pack a whole lot of punch! " And every bruise meant new data. He's an expert zoologist. If he didnt get up and personal testing limits he wasn't doing his job right!
To the chagrin of his friends and colleagues.
"Fighting types, right? And then there's the Blaze and Aqua sub-breeds too! Wow! But I think you're right in calling a break. " Save his poor friend from grief maybe. Wouldn't want to chase Turo back into that hole for who knows how long again.
" Shucks! Nice to see you out and about again! I feel like the last time I saw you in person was in '99! Haven't aged a bit! You must be keeping up with a routine or that Crater's crystals has some youth radiation or something! I was afraid of finding skin and bones down there one day. "

Your thoughts on Tauros (both Kantonian and Paldean)?
From the beginning, Tauros has primarily just been one of those Pokemon that Exist. There's nothing objectively wrong with it, but there's not a whole lot to make it stand out; it's mostly just a bull. Being a non-evolving normal type doesn't help with this, as it's not really gimmick-y enough to stand out as a single-stager. The closest thing to a concept it has is the three tails, which it whips itself with while running:
Even then, though, the three tails aren't really emphasized visually in a way that makes them particularly stand out. It also has metallic-looking horns and three dots down its forehead, which I guess are meant to parallel the three tails. (Side note: missed opportunity to not give us a normal/steel-type Tauros.)
All that said, there's nothing really wrong with Tauros, other than the mane looking weirdly flat and the tails and hooves being a blueish-grey instead of just using the grey from the horns. It just doesn't stand out a whole lot.
The artists working on the new Paldean 'mons must have agreed, because SV gives us not one, but three (3) new regional forms for it. I'm not sure what the rational was beyond maybe wanting to give it a form for each tail, but either way, Tauros definitely needed the love.
That said, Combat Breed Tauros here is pointless and I really don't know why it exists. As a regional, it's just a black Tauros; the mane has been improved and the head and horn shape are ever-so-slightly different, but those changes are barely noticeable. And in the context of the other two forms, it's redundant; the combat form is literally just a watered-down version of its other two much better forms. What's the point of having a form that's the same as the other forms, but less?
I will say, though, that I do at least appreciate that there's not really any bullfighting references in this or the other two designs, beyond them just being fighting-type black bulls. Considering bullfighting is more than slightly controversial in Spain and is general animal abuse (that kills a fair amount of people as well), trying to base anything directly on it would be tasteless. This may be boring, but at least it's a harmless boring.
Aqua Breed Tauros is significantly better than both original and Combat Breed Tauros. It still sports the black coloration (which, as a side note, does look a lot nicer than original Tauros' plain browns and grays), but it actually plays around with the design in a meaningful way.
The most obvious change is the blue water drop-shaped markings in its mane, which indicate its fighting/water typing. These add a little pop of color, and frankly, I wouldn't have minded more of it in the design; the horns, head dots, or hooves all easily could have been blue as well.
It also changes Tauros body type a bit, more closely resembling a water buffalo than a bull. According to the 'dex, this is a result of high body fat that allows it to float on water. The mane also sports a different shape, as do the horns (which can light up blue along with the head dots).
Finally, the tails are different. For some reason it's not shown in the official art, but they tend to hold them twisted up, like rudders:
While I personally prefer Blaze Bleed Tauros for reasons I'll get into in a second, the Aqua Breed is a very nice regional that looks substantially different from the original design, and adds more of a theme to it as well.
Blaze Breed Tauros is similar to Aqua Breed Tauros, though with a less distinct body shape and horns. Arguably this makes it a little blander than the Aqua Breed, but what it lacks in body shape it makes up for in concept.
Blaze Breed Tauros is, unsurprisingly, part fire-type; so in order to represent that, they just took Tauros' three tails and twisted them together to form a dynamite fuse. Boom. Simple, effective, and fun. The Aqua Breed's tails weren't bad, but they felt a bit more forced and didn't read as immediately.
In addition, the mane on this breed goes upward, and contains fiery streaks. The horns go outward instead of upward, and just like the Aqua Breed, they light up along with the head dots:
I feel like the light-up idea makes more sense with the Blaze Breed, as it's akin to hot metal flaring up and becoming red with head. The Aqua Breed just kind of lights up Because. Though just like the Aqua Breed, I find myself wanting more color in the design by default. The tails in particular would've been great if they had red tips for this breed, as if the dynamite had been lit already.
Basically, in short: original Tauros is fine, but bland and fairly forgettable; likewise, the Combat Breed is just a recolor and didn't need to exist. The Aqua and Blaze Breeds, however, are both very good regionals; both change up Tauros' original design while adding something thematically to spice up the concepts. Whichever breed you personally prefer, both are significant improvements over the original.

Help me make sense of something: A pokémon that is acceptable and ethical to train for a battle team, but not as a pet. How can this be? You have to take care of them the reat of the time, after all, just not keep them in your house.
there are a lot of factors that go into this, but it really comes down to the fact that some pokemon need the physical outlet that battling provides.
take a tauros, for example- especially the paldean combat breed. this is a pokemon that absolutely needs to battle. in the wild, tauros fight against each other constantly. if they don't have other tauros to fight, they'll run themselves into trees out of frustration. paldean tauros were bred especially for fighting in close quarters and are even more aggressive than a kantonian tauros. to prevent these pokemon from battling is cruel to them and dangerous to anyone around them.
this is a far cry from, say, a happiny, which is content to run around carrying its stones and getting pampered and pet so long as it's given proper care and enrichment.
of course, battling pokemon also require a lot of care and enrichment outside of just battling. but some pokemon do not thrive in the home or as pets, and trying to keep them as such is unkind at best and a tragedy in the making at worst.
